Propaganda
Hedy Lamarr (Samson and Delilah, Ziegfeld Girl)—Look. I'm sure someone has already submitted Hedy Lamarr because she was spectacularly beautiful, and a very strong lady too: she fled both an abusive marriage AND nazi persecution at a very young age and rebuilt a life for herself pursuing her love for acting all on her own!! Her career as an actress was stellar; while she began acting outside of Hollywood (her very first movie, Ecstasy, won a prize at the Venice Film Festival), she conquered American hearts very quickly with her first movie in the US, Algiers, and then just kept getting better and better. If all this isn't enough, she was also an inventor: her invention of the frequency-hopping spread spectrum radio transmission technique forms the base of bluetooth and has a lot of applications in all kinds of communication technologies. I think that deserves a prize, don't you?
Marilyn Monroe (How to Marry a Millionaire, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Some Like It Hot)— Ngl I thought you all were lying about sexual attraction until I saw Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
This is round 6 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Hedy Lamarr:
Tumblr media
The only person you can find both on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in the Inventor's Hall of Fame--her radio-frequency-hopping technology forms the basis for cordless phones, wi-fi, and a dozen other aspects of modern life. She was also passionate in her efforts to aid the Allies in WWII (unsurprising for a Jewish-Austrian Emigree to America), and her name served as the backbone for one of the best running jokes in what is possibly Mel Brooks' best movie. Look, Louis B. Mayer apparently believed he could plausibly promote her as "The world's most beautiful woman". Is an entire website full of people going to be less audacious than one Louis B. Mayer? I didn't think so!
Tumblr media
Described as "Hedy has the most incredible personal sophistication. She knows the peculiarly European art of being womanly; she knows what men want in a beautiful woman, what attracts them, and she forces herself to be these things. She has magnetism with warmth, something that neither Dietrich nor Garbo has managed to achieve" by Howard Sharpe, she managed to escape her controlling husband (and Nazi Germany) by a) Disguising as her maid and fleeing to Paris or b) Convincing the husband to let her wear all of her jewelry to a dinner, only to disappear afterwards. Also she was particularly clever and helped develop Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum (I can't really explain it but anyway...)
Tumblr media
Her depiction of Delilah and Samson and Delilah just lives rent free in my head. The woman was gorgeous.
Tumblr media
One of the most beautiful women ever in film, spoken by many critics and fans. Beautiful shapely figure, deeper seductive voice, and often played femme fatale roles. She was also brilliant and an inventor. Mainly self-taught, she invested her spare time, including on set between takes, in designing and drafting inventions, which included an improved traffic stoplight and a tablet that would dissolve in water to create a flavored carbonated drink, and much more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gorgeous and brilliant pioneer of modern technology and the middle part.
Tumblr media
Marilyn Monroe:
Tumblr media
She's amazing!!! A classic bombshell, as well as a strong women who overcame so many obstacles. She also advocated for others, like Ella Fitzgerald.
Tumblr media
That fucking saxophone that cuts in whenever she appears on screen in Some Like it Hot
Tumblr media
I mean, it's Marilyn Monroe. She's adorable. She's gorgeous. She funny. She's the total package
Tumblr media
She's the original American sex symbol, an iconic beautiful woman with eyes you could get lost in, legs for days, gorgeous hair, and a cute tummy. Her voice! Just listen to her voice!!!!!
youtube
She is considered one of THE sex symbols of the 1960s and one of the greatest actresses of all time! She HAS to be on this list!
Tumblr media
no vintage movie woman is more iconically hot
Tumblr media
People are most familiar with pictures of her in the white dress or the Happy Birthday Mr President one, but imo she is at her most beautiful and looks most comfortable when she is photographed by women like Eve Arnold
Tumblr media
It’s Marilyn Monroe. If Aphrodite was an actual person, she’d be Marilyn. Do I really need to say more?
Tumblr media
What can I say that hasn't been said? Marilyn's legacy is so much bigger than she was in life. She's a defining symbol of 50s and 60s Hollywood sex and it's obvious why. She was absolutely stunning and the camera loved her.

A Birthday to Remember
My first attempt at a one-shot, based on this glorious request from @latte-luxe:
If you can, could you please write a short, but spicy🌶️🌶️🌶️ one shot of a young, crazy, yet loveable 5'2 Maestra who is celebrating her 30th birthday in Monaco, and a certain 6'5 F1 team principal laid eyes on her and knew he just had to have her. 😅😅😅🙏🙏🙏
Word Count: 4k
Warnings: Caution may contain spice.
Author’s Notes: Disclaimer, purely fiction, no-one is married in this alt-universe.
THE MORNING
It was Saturday morning and stepping out onto her balcony at the Fairmont Monte Carlo, Fernanda swept her eyes over the spectacular view. It was a pinch yourself to check if you’re dreaming kind of view of sparkling blue waters, peppered every so often with a gleaming white yacht.
“Good morning, birthday girl.” murmured a husky, heavily accented voice from behind her. Before she even had the chance to turn around, a pair of muscular arms swooped around her from behind before coming to rest on her hips, gently squeezing her curves.
“Good morning to you too,” she said, turning around and leaning up to kiss the tall towel-clad Austrian, resting her hand on his bare chest as he pressed himself tightly against her. It was yet another pinch me I’m dreaming moment. If someone had told Fernanda this time yesterday that this was how she would be spending her Saturday morning she would have laughed and called them crazy, but sometimes life could be crazy.
THE NIGHT BEFORE
It was a sunny evening and Fernanda had stood out on the balcony with a glass of wine in her hand, admiring the view whilst waiting for her three best friends to get ready. As a lifelong Formula One lover, a weekend trip to Monaco had been on the cards for a while so when her friends asked where she wanted to go to celebrate her thirtieth birthday it was at the top of the list. Turning the dream into reality was another thing altogether and she still couldn’t believe that the trip had materialised.
Dinner was due to be lowkey as Saturday was going to be the big night out, with dinner plans at Elsa, a Michelin-star establishment, followed by a night on the tiles at Jimmyz, a club frequented by the world of Formula One. Friday night’s restaurant of choice was Song Qi, an upscale Chinese restaurant in Larvotto that had come highly recommended.
“Fernanda, how long is the walk?” A voice called out from the suite.
“About five/ten minutes.” She replied, sighing, as always the mom of the group.
“Medium heels it is then,” her friend Olivia replied.
“We can always get a car,” Fernanda suggested.
“No, let’s conserve the taxi budget for tomorrow night,” Olivia said, stepping out onto the balcony to
accompany her friend, “Laura and Becca are almost ready.”
“Good idea,” Fernanda replied, “You look gorgeous by the way.”
Olivia beamed with the compliment, stepping back to twirl in her pink minidress and sparkling sandals, “I try my best, although I can’t compete with you, my spicy little Salma Hayek twin.”
Fernanda blushed, everyone always compared her to the diminutive Mexican actress and truth be told, it wasn’t the worst comparison in the world. She’d chosen a simple white dress with gold sandals for the evening’s dinner, perhaps a risky move in a restaurant serving noodles but she felt fabulous. Her dark hair was slicked back into an elegant bun and she’d highlighted her tanned skin with golden shimmering oil, a move that always brought the compliments.
It wasn’t long before Laura and Becca also emerged, both looking as beautiful as ever. The four friends had treated themselves to two adjoining suites and opened up the connecting door to create a mega-suite.
“Oh la la, give us a twirl,” said Fernanda, looking her elegant friend up and down as she dutifully spun around.
“Beautiful!” Now it was Laura and Becca’s turn to blush. “Ditto! Shall we get going?”
“Sounds like a plan.” Fernanda agreed, the four of them making their way off of the balcony.
——
Song Qi turned out to be an excellent choice, with the table weighed down with baskets of dim sum and bowls of noodles, crispy beef and endless wontons. The restaurant was decadent but comfortable and as Fernanda sank back into her sumptuous green velvet chair she spotted a strangely familiar face at the table across from them. He was dark-haired, handsome with chiselled features and although he was sat down, tall, as he towered above the two men he was dining with.
It took a moment to realise that it was none other than Toto Wolff, the affable Mercedes Formula One team principal. Although she thought it was only for a moment, Fernanda must have stared for a while as he briefly met her eyes and shot her a charming smile. Smiling back like a fool, her friends whipped their heads around to see who their friend was smiling at, fortunately, Toto not noticing as he had returned to his plate.
“Damn girl, he’s kinda hot, in that old businessman kind of way,” said Olivia, turning back around to face Fernanda.
“Well yes…” Fernanda stuttered, “He’s also one of the team principals in Formula One.”
“Huh?” Asked her three friends blankly, not followers of the sport.
“Kind of like the equivalent of a football manager,” Fernanda explained, “Except he owns some of the team as well.”
“Fancy, well he’s pretty. You should go and talk to him.” Said Laura, all formula one facts going straight over her head.
“Oh my god, no,” Fernanda said, “I’m sure he was just being polite.”
As if on cue, Toto looked up and locked eyes with her once again, his deep brown eyes crinkling. Fernanda gulped, returning his gaze with a smile once again.
Dinner continued, with the girls chatting away as Fernanda every so often met Toto’s eyes across the crowded restaurant. He looked to be in some kind of business meeting as the two men with him were dressed smartly and looked serious while conversing with them.
It wasn’t long before dinner had been cleared and a smiling waiter emerged with a chocolate cake laden down with a sparkler and a golden thirty-number candle, Olivia, Becca and Laura looking at each other mischievously before breaking into a rousing rendition of the Happy Birthday song. Fernanda felt her cheeks reddening as she realised the entire restaurant, including Toto and his business associates had joined in the song. As she blew out the candle, she once again locked eyes with Toto who was grinning away while applauding.
“You guys are the worst,” Fernanda said, half joking as she shook her head at her friends. “But that’s why I love you.”
“Aw, well we had to do something,” said Laura, “It’s not every day you have a big birthday like this and although I still don’t understand why you love your car racing so much, I’m happy that we came here.”
Fernanda smiled at her friends, she was appreciative of them, enabling her desire to walk around the Formula One track and visit the car museum, despite the fact they really weren’t interested. Just as she was musing how ironic it was that she’d seen Toto Wolff, their waiter reappeared with a tray of drinks.
“Oh, I don’t think we ordered those,” said Olivia politely.
“Yes Madame, in fact, the gentlemen over there sent them alongside their birthday wishes.” The waiter replied.
Fernanda’s eyes widened, Toto Wolff had sent her birthday wishes. An interesting turn of events.
“Well, then that’s very nice of them,” said Olivia, as the waiter set them down, “Fernanda, you should go and say thank you!”
“Oh my God, yes, go!” Said Becca, egging her friend on.
Sighing, but also buoyed by her friends’ enthusiasm, Fernanda spoke, “I’m going to go but only to say thank you.”
Her three friends squealing with excitement, Fernanda took an extra sip of her drink for courage before standing up and sauntering over to where Toto and his associates sat. His interest piqued immediately as he noticed her making her way across the restaurant.
“Good evening, sorry to interrupt but I just wanted to say thank you for the drinks, it was very kind of you,” Fernanda said, a little too quickly due to nerves.
“Well, it’s not every day you celebrate a milestone like that.” Replied Toto kindly, standing up to hold out a hand to shake, “I’m Toto by the way, and this is Jean and Sebastian,” he gestured at the older gentlemen he was dining with.
Struck by the almost comical height difference Fernanda looked up at the tall Austrian in front of her as he gripped her hand very tightly, “I’m Fernanda, nice to meet you all.”
The other gentlemen smiled at her politely, wishing her a happy birthday before picking their conversation back up. Toto, however, remained stood up, his eyes raking her curves. “Fernanda?” He asked, “A beautiful name for a beautiful woman.”
Now Fernanda was really blushing, “You’re far too kind.”
“Not at all,” he said, “I hope you do not think this forward but would you like to join me for dinner one evening?”
Fernanda’s eyes widened, floored that this man was asking her out. “I would love to but unfortunately I’m only here until Sunday so I’m not sure if I’ll have time.”
Toto looked disappointed but pressed further, “Well then, how about a drink later this evening?”
Fernanda’s eyes went even wider before she managed to answer, “I’m not sure, it’s a girl's trip and I don’t want to ditch my friends, I really would love to though. Maybe can I get your number and text you once I’ve figured out their plans?”
“Understood,” replied Toto, looking down, gazing into her eyes with an unreadable expression, “It would be my pleasure, give me your phone.”
Fernanda’s eyes lit up as she handed her phone to the tall Austrian in front of her who deftly punched in his contact. “Thank you, I’ll check in with the girls and let you know. I’ll leave you to your dinner for now but I hope to see you later,” she said with a smile.
Toto turned to glance at his dining companions who were still deep in conversation, and dropped closer down to Fernanda’s ear, keeping his voice low, sending a shiver down her spine, “It’s okay, I don’t think they missed me. I hope to see you later too Fernanda.”
Fernanda looked up at Toto with a smile, “I’m sure they did. See you, Toto.” As she turned back towards her table she glanced over her shoulder and saw Toto’s eyes were locked on her as he returned to his seat. He was undeniably hot and as much as she always abided by the golden rule, chicks before dicks, this was special circumstances.
Sitting back down with her friends, they immediately leaned in to get the lowdown.
“What did he say? He didn’t take his eyes off of you!” said Laura excitedly.
“Just wished me a happy birthday… and asked me out,” said Fernanda blushing.
“No way!” exclaimed her three friends in unison.
“You’re going to go right?” said Olivia, looking at her friend in concern.
“I’m not sure.” said Fernanda, “I don’t want to ditch you all for a man but equally he’s hot as fuck and it would only be for an hour or so.”
“An hour or so?” said Becca, raising her eyebrows, “I doubt this, but you should go, make it a memorable birthday!”
Fernanda looked over once again at where Toto sat, he was a striking man, pushing all of his success to one side. “What the hell, I’ll message him now. What’s the worst that could happen?”
Her friends squealed with excitement in unison.
Fernanda grabbed her phone and nervously began typing her message to Toto.
It’s all good for tonight, we’re almost done eating so I’m free whenever you are.
She could see Toto excuse himself and take out his phone, shooting her a grin from across the restaurant before looking down to type a response.
Sure enough, Fernanda’s phone buzzed.
Perfect, so are we. Shall I meet you outside in ten minutes?
Fernanda replied excitedly, still not believing she was texting Toto Wolff of all people.
Sounds like a plan.
——
Fernanda was nervous but excited as she saw Toto and his associates pay their bill and head off, Toto shooting her a wink as he jostled his way out of the restaurant.
Settling their own bill, Fernanda and her friends were close behind and as she exited the restaurant, sure enough, she saw Toto standing outside waiting for her, leaning casually up against a column.
Bidding her friends goodbye, she made her way towards her date for the evening. “Hi,” she said somewhat awkwardly, knowing that her friends were likely watching from where they were ordering a taxi to return them to their hotel.
“Hi,” he said, glancing down at her fondly, “How was your dinner?”
“So good!” she said, “How was yours?”
“It was okay, my dining companions weren’t as lovely as you but I think my evening is improving,” he said with a rakish grin.
Fernanda smiled, “You’re a charmer, Toto. Where were you thinking of heading?”
“I know a place a few streets behind, it’s not so fancy but they have an excellent selection of wine if you like it?”
Knowing that she was already a little tipsy, Fernanda was grateful he’d suggested wine, “Sounds good to me, lead the way, Mr Wolff!”
Toto whipped his head around, “I never told you my surname.”
Feeling she’d made a huge error of judgement, Fernanda stuttered, his dark eyes intimidating her before she decided the best course of action was to fess up, “Well it took me a moment but I recognised you. Guilty as charged.”
Musing quietly, Toto’s expression softened, “So you know a little about me, tell me about yourself.”
As the pair made their way around the twisting streets towards the bar, Fernanda filled Toto in on her background, her career as a teacher and her plans for the weekend.
Soon enough they arrived at their destination, Toto, taking the lead and speaking with the Maitre D’ who promptly led them to a secluded table towards the back of the bar.
Settling down on the chair opposite Toto, Fernanda was suddenly much more nervous.
“You look nervous,” Toto said, his eyes kind.
“Well, this is not how I thought my evening was going to pan out. The ruse is up in that I recognised you so I may as well tell you that we came to Monaco because I love Formula One.” Fernanda blushed furiously as her words tangled into one.
“Relax Fernanda, so you know about formula one?” he said, reaching across the table, taking her hand in his and tracing small circles with his thumb on the back of her hand.
“Well, probably not as much as you.” Fernanda laughed, breaking the tension and gazing into his eyes.
“You’d be surprised,” said Toto shrugging with a smirk. “I just got lucky.”
——
As the evening went on, the pair discussed everything under the sun, the wine helping Fernanda to feel less awkward and forget who she was talking to. Toto was funnier than she expected and she spent half the evening giggling at his stupid remarks. He’d regaled her with stories of his travel adventures, driving mishaps and various other anecdotes, whilst she’d filled him in with her tales of teaching and embarrassing childhood moments. They’d bonded over their love of all things with an engine and time had flown by.
“Ahem.” Their conversation was suddenly interrupted by a waiter, “Monsieur, Madame, I am sorry to say that we are closing in ten minutes. Can I take one last order?”
Knowing she was well beyond tipsy, Fernanda shook her head, looking at Toto to check if he was in agreement. Looking somewhat bleary-eyed himself he shook his head as well, “Just the bill please.”
Soon enough the cheque had been settled and Fernanda found herself once again wandering the moonlit streets of Monaco with Toto, this time her hand firmly encased in his.
“Where do you need to go?” Toto asked kindly, “I can drop you back.”
“I’m staying at the Fairmont,” Fernanda replied, not wanting the night to end.
“It’s not so far, are you happy to walk?” he asked, squeezing her hand.
“Sure, it’s just up there,” she replied gesturing at the bend in the road where the hotel was perched, “As long as you can get home okay?”
“I’ll be fine,” said Toto, a dark look in his eye. “Fernanda, when do you leave again?”
“Sunday afternoon,” she said sadly, wishing she was staying for longer.
“Well, you’ll have to come back next year for the Grand Prix,” he said, a twinkle in his eye.
“Maybe if I rob a bank!” she said with a chuckle, “One day.”
“I don’t like to boast, but I might know someone who can get you in without having to resort to organised crime,” he said, laughing with a deep rumble.
“Oh really?” Fernanda said, turning to face Toto in the inky moonlight, “Is he nice?”
“Very,” said Toto, dropping Fernanda’s hand and placing his hands on either side of her waist, swaying slightly in his merry state.
Laughing, Fernanda stretched up to look Toto in the eye, “I’ll have to meet this guy, he sounds great.”
At that their lips met, Toto bending down to plant a soft kiss on Fernanda’s lips, their height difference making it slightly a challenge but one that neither party seemed bothered by. As the kiss deepened, Toto began to run his hands down towards Fernanda’s perfectly rounded ass, squeezing gently as he found her curves.
Breaking apart for air, Fernanda glanced around, luckily there was no one in the empty street but she didn’t want to risk being caught making out in the street with a famous face and it being splashed across the tacky tabloids.
“Do you fancy a nightcap at mine?” she asked, looking up at Toto through her fluffy long lashes.
Toto’s eyes lit up, “Well, I have heard the view is nice.”
Fernanda laughed, grabbing Toto’s hand once again and leading him towards the corner entrance to her hotel. As they crossed the lobby she had a sudden panic that her friend Olivia was in their room, and as they made it into the elevator, sent a frantic text knowing her friends would still be awake, waiting for her post-date debrief.
Red alert, I’m bringing him back, please can you vacate?
Sure enough, the replies came back instantaneously.
Oh la la of course birthday girl!
Get it girl!
Knew it!!!!!
Smiling as Toto rested his hand on the small of her back in the elevator, Fernanda looked up at him before he once again swooped down to catch her lips with his.
The elevator dinged before things could get too heated but it didn’t stop Toto wrapping his arm tightly around Fernanda’s waist as the pair stumbled towards her room.
“Here we are,” she said, scrambling to find her keycard in her bag before popping open the door to unveil her suite. Thankfully her friends must have tidied for her as the detritus from getting ready for the evening was nowhere to be seen.
“Nice,” said Toto before bending down once again to continue kissing her, turning her around to face him as she closed the door. Pressing her against the wall with his leg, he continued to deepen the kiss, his hands starting to explore more of her body.
“As soon as I saw you I knew I had to have you,” he said, his lips resting against her ear, his deep Austrian accent rumbling.
Fernanda gulped, she never would have thought it but his voice roused something deep within. Her lips stretching up and finding the crevice of his neck, she replied in a low voice, “Then have me.”
Toto needed no invitation, scooping her up into his arms, he carried her over to the bed, throwing her down before leaning over and continuing to kiss her, his strong arms either side of her, pinning her down.
Emboldened by his eagerness, Fernanda wrapped her legs around his thick torso, pushing herself against him, not surprised to find a growing bulge. As he ground his hips into hers, he started to explore her curves with his large hands, ghosting her breasts and waist and reaching around to caress her ass once again.
Reaching up, Fernanda started to unbutton Toto’s shirt, exposing a surprisingly muscular frame. Impatient, he leaned up and divested himself of the shirt as well as the rest of his clothes, leaving him in nothing but boxers. Fernanda couldn’t help but smile at the view that greeted her as he once again lunged down to kiss her, this time, his hands making quick work of pulling her dress off, leaving her exposed in nothing but her lingerie and heels.
“You are ridiculous,” he said, his eyes hungry with desire, gazing into her eyes and gently kissing her neck.
“I could say the same about you,” replied Fernanda breathily, her back arching in pleasure as Toto kissed his way along her neck and across her collarbone.
Melting into each other’s arms, Fernanda began to grind back against his now prominent hardness, feeling herself getting more turned on by the second.
“Toto?” she asked, gasping for air, “Will you fuck me?”
Toto’s eyes lit up, “I thought you’d never ask.”
Smiling at each other, Toto reached down to unhook Fernanda’s bra, releasing her pert breasts, “Fuck, Fernanda.” he said, lifting his head to marvel at them, “Even better than I imagined.”
Fernanda blushed at his words, not used to such attention. Growing impatient she ghosted her hands down Toto’s abs, hooking her fingers into the waistband of his boxers.
“You’re an impatient little thing aren’t you?” he said, leaning back suddenly and hooking his arms underneath Fernanda’s legs, gripping her thighs and bringing her closer. “I want to taste you first.”
Gulping Fernanda leant back, allowing Toto to bring his mouth to where she needed it most. As his tongue lapped gently, he brought his hand along and began to stroke her clit, slowly but sensually.
It wasn’t long before Fernanda was writhing in pleasure, tugging Toto’s dark locks as he pumped a finger in and out, continuing to expertly lick.
“Toto, I want you in me,” she said, seeing stars as she was so close.
Pausing his ministrations, Toto was more than happy to oblige, kissing his way back up her torso as he replied, “I want to do everything with you.”
At that, Fernanda melted, the evening had turned into one that was beyond her wildest dreams. As Toto swiftly undressed them both, she gazed into his intense chocolate eyes as he began to line himself up, unsurprisingly intimidatingly big.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be gentle,” he said, pressing a kiss to her forehead as he pushed in, slowly but surely. Gasping, Fernanda shifted as she adjusted to his size. True to his word, he took it easy and entered her tantalisingly slowly, an inch at a time.
“Fuck, Toto.” she said breathily, “You’re so big.”
Smiling, he pulled back out before pushing in once more, “Tell me if it’s too much.”
“Not at all, it feels good,” she said, feeling pleasantly stretched in places she’d never felt before.
“Good.” he said with a grin as he began to thrust in and out lazily, continuing to kiss her.
It wasn’t long before they were a tangled mess of arms and legs, both nearing completion. “Fuck, Toto, I am so close.” said Fernanda, her eyes rolling back in pleasure.
“Close isn’t good enough,” said Toto, smirking as he reached down and found her clit once again, his thumb circling gently as he continued to push in and out, speeding up.
“That feels so go…” Fernanda couldn’t even finish her sentence as Toto hit the sweet spot with expert precision.
“Fernanda…” was all Toto managed as he thrust in and out a few more times, chasing his own high before collapsing on top of Fernanda.
“Ooff.” said Fernanda, crushed by the weight of the muscular man on top of her.
“Sorry,” he said sheepishly, flashing her a shy grin as he rolled off to lie beside her.
“Well… that was not how I expected my birthday to turn out.” said Fernanda, feeling like she was in a dream.
Toto laughed, stretching a strong arm across her stomach to pull her in for a cuddle. “There’s still a few hours of your birthday left.”
Fernanda’s eyes widened once more. This was certainly a birthday to remember.

The Wind Rises was described as follow:
A Studio Ghibli film about a designer of war planes used by Japan during WWII and how he struggles with his pacifist beliefs while still being forced to design these machines made for death. The emotions ring true in every frame of this film and the flying sequences are truly unbelievably gorgeous.
To Be Or Not To Be was described as follow:
A young aviator simping after an actress, her jealous husband, a bunch of chaotic good polish theater kids and a nazi spy walk into a bar. Five minutes later, the bar was bombed, the aviator killed the spy, the husband disguised himself as the spy to fool the nazis, the bartender shot himself and missed and another theater kid disguised himself as Hitler in order to commandeer a plane out of the country. An hilarious movie which, in 1942, was made by a bunch of german/austrian/polish immigrants in the US to completely destroy and roast Hitler and his regime.

What are your favourite non-fiction book about the Habsburgs?
Hello! Sorry it took me so long to answer!
My favorite book about the Habsburgs is actually one that it's not about the main people I tend to talk about in this blog (aka from the time of Franz Josef): Barbara Stollber-Rillinger’s biography of Empress Maria Theresia, which is not just a biography but THE book about the 18th century Habsburg empire, period. She covers EVERYTHING: how the Maria Theresia myth originated, the War of the Austrian Succession, the Seven Years War, court rituals, marriage alliances, education policies, religious policies, political reforms, the complex relationship between the Empress and her children (each child gets their own chapter), just to name a few of the book’s subjects. It is an academical book so the prose is kinda dry, and if you’re not used to read this kind of scholarly work it may be a bit difficult to get through, but I don’t think it’s particularly hard to read. It did took me months to read it but because it’s a LONG book (over 1000 pages) and I did find some parts a bit tedious (mainly the ones related to the political reforms, the subject just doesn’t interest me a lot), but in other parts I was so hooked that I couldn’t stop reading. If you're looking for a more personal biography of the empress you might find this one disappointing since the author doesn't focus too much on that (“no false intimacy with Maria Theresa will be presumed. The heroine shall be kept at arm’s length.”), but otherwise I highly recommend it.
Leaving the world of academic writing and entering into pop history, surprisingly my favorite book that I’ve read so far is Joan Haslip’s 1982 The Emperor and the actress. This books is neither a biography of Emperor Franz Josef nor Katharina Schratt, but a book about their relationship, how they met and became unlikely best friends. Haslip still does this thing in which she doesn’t cite anything BUT she does quote lots of letters and explicitly says “now I’m quoting a letter”, which made this problem less annoying. Possibly there may be better books about Katharina (there are newer and more updated ones in German for sure), but in English this remains the best source about the actress, and because of that I was completely hooked. It was also my introduction to Bulgarian history and royalty, which I knew nothing about before (fun fact Katharina was also besties with future Tsar Ferdinand and Franz Josef was jealous of him because of it lol). It isn’t a perfect book by any means, but I’m very fond of it nonetheless (example on how this books isn’t perfect at all: Haslip says once that Sophie Chotek was ugly which is just CRAZY, she was gorgeous!!!).
In the memoirs area I really enjoyed Stephanie of Belgium’s. While the view she gives of the Viennese court is obviously biased, I liked to have her version of the story, because I felt that it was overall balanced (yes, even with the complaining about her unfair treatment and all). She also provides some of Rudolf’s letters, which is nice.
I’ve only scratched the top of the iceberg that is Rudolf and Mayerling books, so I don’t really have a favorite here. I’ve read Greg King and Penny Wilson’s Twilight of Empire which I thought was a good introduction to the subject, mainly because there is a whole section of the book in which the authors go in-depth about the history of Mayerling books from the first one ever published, focusing on how reliable they are based on the author and the sources they had access to; which I think is a very useful reading guide to get fully into the subject (on the other hand, I did find the biography part of the book was just ok).
On books about Empress Elisabeth, I already mentioned some in this ask.
To be honest I’ve been avoiding the “big” Habsburg books, in part because they lowkey intimidate me (there are so many both in academic and pop history, where do you even begin?), and in part because I fear that I will find them unsatisfactory (I rather read a 500 pages long book that goes into detail in, idk, Charles V’s life and reign than a “History of the Habsburgs” book that only gives him 20 pages). HOWEVER I’ve been researching which are the books that seem like the best on different subjects so I’ve already got a reading list ready for my hot girl summer.
Thank you for your question!

Such an incredible, mostly unknown story.
In 1933, a beautiful, young Austrian woman took off her clothes for a movie director. She ran through the woods, naked. She swam in a lake, naked. Pushing well beyond the social norms of the period. The most popular movie in 1933 was King Kong. But everyone in Hollywood was talking about that scandalous movie with the gorgeous, young Austrian woman.
Louis B. Mayer, of the giant studio MGM, said she was the most beautiful woman in the world. The film was banned practically everywhere, which of course made it even more popular and valuable. Mussolini reportedly refused to sell his copy at any price.
The star of the film, called "Ecstasy," was Hedwig Kiesler. She said the secret of her beauty was "to stand there and look stupid." In reality, Kiesler was anything but stupid. She was a genius. She'd grown up as the only child of a prominent Jewish banker. She was a math prodigy. She excelled at science. As she grew older, she became ruthless, using all the power her body and mind gave her.
Between the sexual roles she played, her tremendous beauty, and the power of her intellect, Kiesler would confound the men in her life including her six husbands, two of the most ruthless dictators of the 20th century, and one of the greatest movie producers in history. Her beauty made her rich for a time. She is said to have made - and spent - $30 million in her life.
But her greatest accomplishment resulted from her intellect, and her invention continues to shape the world we live in today.
You see, this young Austrian starlet would take one of the most valuable technologies ever developed right from under Hitler's nose. After fleeing to America, she not only became a major Hollywood star, her name sits on one of the most important patents ever granted by the U.S. Patent Office. Today, when you use your cell phone or, over the next few years, as you experience super-fast wireless Internet access (via something called "long-term evolution" or "LTE" technology), you'll be using an extension of the technology a 20-year-old actress first conceived while sitting at dinner with Hitler.
At the time she made Ecstasy, Kiesler was married to one of the richest men in Austria. Friedrich Mandl was Austria's leading arms maker. His firm would become a key supplier to the Nazis. Mandl used his beautiful young wife as a showpiece at important business dinners with representatives of the Austrian, Italian, and German fascist forces. One of Mandl's favorite topics at these gatherings - which included meals with Hitler and Mussolini - was the technology surrounding radio-controlled missiles and torpedoes.
Wireless weapons offered far greater ranges than the wire-controlled alternatives that prevailed at the time. Kiesler sat through these dinners "looking stupid," while absorbing everything she heard. As a Jew, Kiesler hated the Nazis. She abhorred her husband's business ambitions. Mandl responded to his willful wife by imprisoning her in his castle, Schloss Schwarzenau. In 1937, she managed to escape. She drugged her maid, snuck out of the castle wearing the maid's clothes, and sold her jewelry to finance a trip to London.
(She got out just in time. In 1938, Germany annexed Austria. The Nazis seized Mandl's factory. He was half-Jewish. Mandl fled to Brazil. (Later, he became an adviser to Argentina's iconic populist president, Juan Peron.)
In London, Kiesler arranged a meeting with Louis B. Mayer. She signed a long-term contract with him, becoming one of MGM's biggest stars. She appeared in more than 20 films. She was a co-star to Clark Gable, Judy Garland, and even Bob Hope. Each of her first seven MGM movies was a blockbuster. But Kiesler cared far more about fighting the Nazis than about making movies.
At the height of her fame, in 1942, she developed a new kind of communications system, optimized for sending coded messages that couldn't be "jammed." She was building a system that would allow torpedoes and guided bombs to always reach their targets. She was building a system to kill Nazis. By the 1940s, both the Nazis and the Allied forces were using the kind of single-frequency radio-controlled technology Kiesler's ex-husband had been peddling. The drawback of this technology was that the enemy could find the appropriate frequency and "jam" or intercept the signal, thereby interfering with the missile's intended path.
Kiesler's key innovation was to "change the channel." It was a way of encoding a message across a broad area of the wireless spectrum. If one part of the spectrum was jammed, the message would still get through on one of the other frequencies being used. The problem was, that she could not figure out how to synchronize the frequency changes on both the receiver and the transmitter. To solve the problem, she turned to perhaps the world's first techno-musician, George Anthiel.
Anthiel was an acquaintance of Kiesler who achieved some notoriety for creating intricate musical compositions. He synchronized his melodies across twelve-player pianos, producing stereophonic sounds no one had ever heard before. Kiesler incorporated Anthiel's technology for synchronizing his player pianos. Then, she was able to synchronize the frequency changes between a weapon's receiver and its transmitter. On August 11, 1942, U.S. Patent No. 2,292,387 was granted to Antheil and "Hedy Kiesler Markey," which was Kiesler's married name at the time.
Most of you won't recognize the name Kiesler. And no one would remember the name Hedy Markey. But it's a fair bet that anyone reading this post of a certain age will remember one of the great beauties of Hollywood's golden age - Hedy Lamarr. That's the name Louis B. Mayer gave to his prize actress. That's the name his movie company made famous. Almost no one knows Hedwig Kiesler – a/k/a Hedy Lamarr - was one of the great pioneers of wireless communications. Her technology was developed by the U.S. Navy, which has used it ever since.
You are probably using Lamarr's technology, too. Her patent sits at the foundation of "spread spectrum technology," which you use every day when you log on to a Wi-Fi network or make calls with your Bluetooth-enabled phone. It lies at the heart of the massive investments being made right now in so-called fourth-generation "LTE" wireless technology. This next generation of cell phones and cell towers will provide tremendous increases to wireless network speed and quality, by spreading wireless signals across the entire available spectrum. This kind of encoding is only possible using the kind of frequency switching that Hedwig Kiesler invented.

Tagged again ... of course, by the most precious sweetheart around here: @rememberedkisses ... thank you so much, love 😘!!! Gosh, this personal colour aestethic was real fun, it went much faster than I thought and I share it with some explanations:
Obviously, I'm an addict of the classy British style in all its marvellous earth, green and burgundy tones. To be honest, I'm an absolute dandy type even if I adore and wear beautiful vintage swing dresses, too! The outfits and shoes above are from one of my favourite designers, the lovely Austrian Lena Hoschek 💕!
English and Irish manor houses with large libraries are my weakness, the one shown above is located in the Wiltshire, England and once belonged to the famous photographer Cecil Beaton.
My favourite accessory is the elegant Armani watch of my beloved Dad who died over 5 years ago. He taught me so much respect, good manners and style! So I have him always around me ❤!
My favourite male celebrities who have inspired me and affected my life tremendously, are ... surprise, surprise ... the gorgeous and talented guys Mr. Donald O'Connor and Mr. Kenneth Williams, both appropriately dressed for this occasion, of course! The same goes for my favourite female actress, the excellent Mrs. Cate Blanchett, here shown in one of her marvellous costumes in "Carol".
I love writing (diary, letters), calligraphy (here's a serious Copperplate student 😊), besides I've always been an absolute bookworm ... 'cos living is learning!
Furthermore, I'm a dance maniac; especially tap dance owns my heart! Unfortunately, I had to quit my lessons due to health problems a few years ago ... now I seriously think about starting over again what is a quite good idea, 'cos I agree with my wonderful baby, Mr. O'Connor: "Dancing is so wonderful. Once they start the music, your whole day, if it's been rotten, seems to melt away. You get carried away in the tune that you're moving to. It's a marvelous catharsis, to be able to get on top and tap dance." ❤
I'm afraid so many of you have been tagged already (if so, please forgive me that I haven't noticed it!), but I invite @silverscene, @glamourofyesteryear, @maureenoharra, @hollywoodlady, @ladybegood, @technicolor--dreams and @mostlydaydreaming. No obligation, but I would be delighted to learn more about you lovelies 💕! Anyone else who wants to give it a try ... feel yourself tagged and join in 🌟! ... Lots of Love, Tanja 💋

FINAL POLL OF ROUND 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sonja Henie (Thin Ice, Happy Landing)—no idea if she counts, she's a famous skater more than anything else, but count her for the lols and i'll send you some thin mints
This is round 1 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut]
One of the most beautiful women ever in film, spoken by many critics and fans. Beautiful shapely figure, deeper seductive voice, and often played femme fatale roles. She was also brilliant and an inventor. Mainly self-taught, she invested her spare time, including on set between takes, in designing and drafting inventions, which included an improved traffic stoplight and a tablet that would dissolve in water to create a flavored carbonated drink, and much more.
Her depiction of Delilah and Samson and Delilah just lives rent free in my head. The woman was gorgeous.
Gorgeous and brilliant pioneer of modern technology and the middle part.

Paul Henreid: Actor, Director, Father By Susan King
Tumblr media
Who was the most romantic actor during the Golden Age of Hollywood? For me, it was Paul Henreid. He was tall-6’3”-handsome, with a gorgeous Austrian accent and a nobility and intelligence that could sweep women off their feet. Like that iconic scene in NOW, VOYAGER (‘42) where he lights two cigarettes at once giving one to Bette Davis; or when he utters the words “if I were free, there would be only one thing I’d want to do – prove you’re not immune to happiness. Would you want me to prove it, Charlotte? Tell me you would. Then I’ll go. Why, darling, you are crying.”
And this exchange with Rick (Humphrey Bogart) in his most famous role as the noble resistance leader Victor Laszlo in the Oscar-winning classic CASABLANCA (‘42):
Rick: “Don't you sometimes wonder if it's worth all this? I mean what you're fighting for.”
Victor: “You might as well question why we breathe. If we stop breathing, we'll die. If we stop fighting our enemies, the world will die.”
But Henreid was so much more than those two roles. He was dashing and sexy as a pirate in the 1945 Technicolor swashbuckling adventure THE SPANISH MAIN, he gave a complex and haunting performance as the mentally troubled composer Robert Schumann in SONG OF LOVE (‘47) and proved he could be a wonderfully vile film noir bad guy in HOLLOW TRIUMPH (‘48).
Tumblr media
He also survived the blacklist, directed numerous episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, as well as the delicious thriller DEAD RINGER (‘64) with Davis. Even before he came to Hollywood, Henreid made his U.S film debut in the terrific romantic war drama JOAN OF PARIS (‘42); he had been a star on the Vienna stage as a member of the legendary Max Reinhardt’s theater company and also appeared in films. He was offered a movie contract with UFA in Berlin with the caveat that he join the National Socialist Actors Guild of Germany. Henreid turned down the offer.
Henreid went to England where he earned good reviews on the London stage as Prince Albert in 1937 in Victoria Regina. Though he played a sympathetic German in GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS (‘39), he was typecast generally in Nazi roles such as in Carol Reed’s classic NIGHT TRAIN TO MUNICH (‘40). He even played an odious German consul in his first Broadway show Elmer Rice’s Flight to the West in 1940. Then came Hollywood. And a name change from Von Hernreid to Henreid.
He was 84 when he died in 1992.
I recently chatted via e-mail with his daughter Monika Henreid, an actress/writer/director who is currently working on a documentary about her father.
Tumblr media
You always talk so lovingly about your father on social media. What was he like as a husband, father and friend?
My parents were in love…really in love. They were best friends, confidants, colleagues for almost 60 years. So, my guess is, he was a wonderful husband!
He was a hands-on father. He invested time and money to make sure I had all the arts, sports and education a growing girl needs. He always asked how the day went, what I did, what did I enjoy, what did I learn. He was willing to help with or review homework. When my mother didn’t want to attend events, meaning premieres or films, ballets, operas, concerts, etc., I was fortunate enough to be his date.
As a friend to others, he was devoted. Friendship meant a lot to him. It wasn’t always easy to separate real friends from the ‘Hollywood’ type friends. But once he knew, through trial and error and behavior, he was a great person to have as a friend.
Was it difficult, albeit, dangerous for your parents to leave Austria for England?
My father had a successful stage career in Vienna and, because of his reputation, had the opportunity to do a play in London. After that play, he returned to the Viennese stage and some film. When it was time to really leave because of the political situation, he had another offer in London. That allowed for a good structure, but they were scared for the families on both sides. Eventually, most of my mother’s family moved from Austria, but my father’s stayed. My mother did have numerous interactions with the Gestapo, but she was smart and charming and always released without incident.
How was your father discovered by Hollywood? When NIGHT TRAIN TO MUNICH was released in New York City, my father was appearing in the Elmer Rice play Flight to the West on Broadway. Simultaneous double whammy. He was very visible and got a lot of press. Good press! He said a lot of scouts and agents came around, but Lew Wasserman made the move to Hollywood possible. Lew became my father’s agent and later, my godfather.
Tumblr media
He made so many classic films in 1942, what was that like for him to become a Hollywood star so quickly? He had already achieved ‘stardom’ in Austria and England, so I don’t think it was that difficult. He never talked about it at home. I think it was more the Hollywood lifestyle and the American way culturally that was jolting. Did he enjoy being under contract to Warner Bros.? He was happy to be working and felt secure with the studio system contract, but he wanted some control over his projects. He was always interested in more challenging character parts, so was quickly tired of being pigeonholed as the handsome, romantic leading man. He took SPANISH MAIN to Jack Warner who turned it down. So, he went back to his first Hollywood studio RKO, where it was made. He was suspended a number of times [at Warner Bros.] because he refused to do ‘crap’ scripts and soon learned he really preferred his independence. Your father was one of many actors and directors including Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall and John Huston, who went to Washington, D.C. in 1947 to oppose the HUAC investigation into communism in Hollywood. Did his support lead to him being blacklisted? Absolutely. He was immediately blacklisted by all the Hollywood studios. Offers stopped right away. He talked to his agent and was told what the studio reaction was. He couldn’t believe it! And there were no longer invitations to lunch or dinner from the ‘Hollywood friends.’ Luckily, he could work for independent producers and in England and Europe.
Tumblr media
Your dad was removed from the blacklist when he became a director in the 1950s on the classic TV anthology Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Had he been good friends with Hitch? His friendship was with [producer] Joan Harrison, Hitch’s ‘right hand man.’ Had your father wanted to direct before he joined the series? He was a very ‘educated’ artist. He went through all the rigors of the drama school in Vienna and graduated qualified as a professional. Directing was just an extension of his training and experience. He was a man who loved to be in charge in any way. It was his nature-so a rather organic move when the first opportunities as a director or a producer presented themselves. Would you talk about his bond with Bette Davis? They were so wonderful in NOW, VOYAGER and DECEPTION (‘46), and he directed her in a Hitchcock episode as well as the fun thriller DEAD RINGER. He and Bette were friends, colleagues, flirts and best of adversaries. They respected each other and were capable of pushing each other’s buttons. There was a tremendous trust and so, we get these wonderful performances from both of them. He was a wonderful director because he understood the actor. I should say that my mother was included in the friendship. She was also creative, smart and talented and often contributed to make that duo a trio. He directed you in DEAD RINGER. What was that experience like? Great. I was fortunate enough to have that experience a number of times. We were really good about keeping the job and the home life separated. Work was work. Home was home. There was an expectation of excellence, but that was an everyday experience. He was a bit of a perfectionist but then, so am I. He didn’t push or shove but rather guided. Ask anyone he worked with how calm and gentle he was. You may not be able to answer this question! But what is the favorite film of your dad’s? That’s difficult to answer! My favorite film is THE SPANISH MAIN because it’s most like HIM – smart, athletic, funny, thoughtful, charming, daring, gorgeous. As far as acting talents go, a toss-up or mixture of SONG OF LOVE, DECEPTION and HOLLOW TRIUMPH.

you lived in austria, didn't you? did you see hallmark came out with a new movie called christmas in vienna?
oh my god anon lol
YES i did live in vienna for the last 2 years of high school and YES i did know about the new hallmark christmas movie. in fact, i knew about it a year ago because an austrian friend of mine who’s now an actress has a role in the movie and she was posting about when they were filming last december/january. my mom is a huge hallmark christmas person and loves all things related to our time in vienna (which is truly gorgeous at christmas time) so i told her about it and she’s spent all year reminding me that we’d have to watch it together. so we did last night when it premiered (even though it’s mid-november and too early for christmas stuff).
and oH BOY.
look, vienna was gorgeous in the movie just like i thought it’d be. but my mom and i knew nothing about the plot and then ... like 5 minutes into the movie the male lead revealed that he was a US diplomat??
ANON, MY DAD WAS A DIPLOMAT ALL MY LIFE. THAT’S WHY WE LIVED IN AUSTRIA, BECAUSE HE WAS STATIONED AT THE US EMBASSY THERE.
from that point on in the film there was no way the movie could just be a fun lark into hallmark escapism. it just became a 2 hour jaunt of my mom and i yelling at the tv about how stupid everything was. like??? they had him living in a fucking pALACE. and alina, my high school classmate playing his nanny, had to say some dumb line like “oh, all the US diplomats live in fancy houses like these in vienna.” UM NO WE DON’T AND ALINA YOU DEFINITELY WENT TO MY HOUSE IN HIGH SCHOOL. honest to god not even the ambassador lives in a residence as gorgeous or huge as that set.
and then!! ANON! the whole conflict of the movie was that everyone was UPSET that the dude was offered a promotion where he’d have to move!!
FIRSTLY, that is not how promotions work in the state department, omg, no one calls up a diplomat and is like “hi, do you want to get promoted? if you say yes you have to move next week.” like. WOW NO.
but SECONDLY, he is a DIPLOMAT. a FOREIGN SERVICE OFFICER. his ENTIRE CAREER is based around moving every 1–3 years. nobODY SHOULD BE GETTING MAD AT HIM THAT.
LASTLY, this movie clearly exists in an alternate universe where visas don’t exist because everyone’s just like “we should just stay in vienna!” and nO THAT’S NOT HOW ANY OF THIS WORKS.
if he had had any other career it could have been a fun little jaunt to watch for my friend but nOPE they had to make him a diplomat and do it all TERRIBLY.
WAIT AND ALSO!!!
alina and i are 29 and she was playing sarah drew’s college roommate. ANON. anon, sarah drew is f o r t y years old.

Created by the makers of numerous hit musicals such as “Elisabeth” and “Mozart!”, “I AM FROM AUSTRIA” is a musical about the country of Austria, created in September 2017 by United Stages Vienna. This performance centered around the theme of “Home” and “Family”, full of gorgeous revues, with numerous songs composed by Austria’s popular singer-songwriter Rainhard Fendrich, and sprinkled with comedy, which has taken Austria by storm, is a smash hit that is still currently being staged, and has accomplished an exceptional long run until June of 2019. Coincidentally, on this year, which the commemoration of the 150th year in which Japan-Austria relations were established, coinciding with the 105th anniversary of Takarazuka Revue, “Our home in our hearts” and both coinciding with the feelings of nostalgia, this premiere performance in Japan will be performed by the Moon Troupe, starring Tamaki Ryou and Misono Sakura.
This stage is set in historically old Hotel Edler. George, who is the heir of the hotel, against the wishes of his traditional-minded parents, with the innovative mind of a young adult, planning for reform, was actively participating in managing the hotel, in order to achieve his heartfelt desire to become a “5-star” hotel.
Then the popular Austrian Hollywood Actress Emma Carter, who returned home after a long while, in order to participate in an opera ball, comes to visit incognito. However, when one worker tweets about her visit, the media swarms in, and the hotel wreaks havoc. When George visits Emma’s room, in order to apologize for the hotel’s mismanagement, the two gets along well unexpectedly however......
George, who searches for the things he should do as a hotel heir, and Emma, who loses herself even as a worldwide star, Each person becomes drawn to one another, and in Austria’s beautiful townscapes and nature, begins to find one’s own places where they each belong.
Please anticipate the heart-warming performance written with treasured numbers throughout, including the theme song “I AM FROM AUSTRIA”, also referred to as Austria’s second national anthem.

Newsical #1
Tumblr media
I thought I would introduce something new to Coffintanz, newsical (news about musicals) this way you can stay up-to-date with news, updates and other things about the musicals and actors that you usually see floating around on this page. This means it will primarily be focussed on the German/Austrian musical world, but can also extend to other countries every so often if news is really worth mentioning. These posts will come out sporadically since there could be periods that there’s not really anything worth mentioning.
This newsical has a lot of news about Drew Sarich, it just so happens to be that he has been really active lately, in the future, other things will be on the forefront more.
1. Drew Sarich’ album release has been postponed.
Drew’s album Hunting for Heaven would have been released on the 27th of November, but Drew announced on his facebook page that the date has been pushed back to the 25th of January. He said that they are working on the finishing touches, but that the date of the 27th just wouldn’t be possible. The people who are attending his upcoming gig will still be able to experience the new songs, but the rest of us will have to wait for a few months more.
2. Marian Vojtko (The Czech Graf von Krolock) has released an album on which the Czech versions of Totale Finsternis and Die unstillbare Gier are featured.
There are no official recordings of the Czech Tanz der Vampire, to now have 2 songs from Tanz sung by the main actor is really great! The songs are called Prostopášný chtíč (Gier) and Milostný duet (ToFi). Totale Finsternis is sung together with Natálie Grossová, the actress who plays Sarah. It’s definitely worth listening to and in my opinion, it sounds gorgeous in Czech. If you have Spotify, check out the link:
https://open.spotify.com/track/3tTa9tuawebb3wPNcmMdd0?si=DpFGzIeGR3ud_rLUL7ahZg
3. Jesus Christ Superstar is coming back to Vienna in 2019 with Drew Sarich as Jesus
It was to be expected, but the VBW is doing another run of JCSS during the easter season. The show lasts from the 12th to the 22nd of April and is performed in the Raimundtheater. Tickets can be bought right now at this link:
https://www.musicalvienna.at/de/spielplan-und-tickets/spielplan/production/853/Jesus-Christ-Superstar-2019
4. Kostümanprobe of Wonderful Town and Interview with Drew Sarich
Lastly, two small things, the Volksoper has started preparing for the musical Wonderful Town, usually this wouldn’t be news, but Drew looked so good in his costume that I had to dedicate a part of newsical to it.
Tumblr media
Musical1 interviewed Drew and although the interview itself was quite mediocre, it’s always fun to hear something more from Drew. If you haven’t listened to it yet, check it out here:

What age did you realize you were bisexual, and how did you come out to your friends and family?
Hm, I don’t think there was a specific age or point where I realised, I think I just always was. Of course I grew up as a kid with that whole notion of growing up and getting a boyfriend and getting married and that whole spiel, but the closer I got to high school the less focused I was a on the “boyfriend” aspect.
I think, due in part to the very repressive school environment I was in during high school (private Catholic girls), I developed a really rebellious nature and just on principal became a lot more open to ideas that were traditionally looked down on there and which I could apply to myself. I actually embraced paganism between my first and second year of high school because what they were teaching in religion and our general assemblies just didn’t make sense to me, logically or spiritually, but that’s a story for another time ^_^
I had had a friend from primary school  make fun of me going to an all-girls school, mocking me and saying i was going to be a lesbian when I was done (coincidentally, i met her again in college and it turned out she was a lesbian...go figure!), and my first reaction was to get angry and mad at that idea, but as time went on, i was like, why would that be so bad? it wouldn’t matter to me if I was with a woman or not, as long as i was happy.
Also, I had my first girl crush at that time. It was someone who was two years ahead of me in school and she was gorgeous (I won’t name names, but she’s a pretty well-known Canadian actress now, so she was already out of my league then...and straight) and I was waaaaay too intimidated to go anywhere near her. I was the classic self-conscious weird girl with glasses and braces crushing on a vibrant, extroverted and popular girl *shrug*
Anyway. So, by the time I hit my graduating year, I was pretty secure in the knowledge that I liked both guys and girls (though at the time I was more into guys than girls; right now in my life, I like them both equally, though I think women are the more aesthetically pleasing of the group...unless the guy is like chris hemsworth or david tennant or someone like that ^_^). I was also at the “I fucking dare anyone at this school to make me feel bad about myself for that” stage, too.
I never really lost that, tbh.
As for when I came out to my friends and family...well, my friends always knew. Since high school, whenever I talked about a possible romantic partner I always say “my future husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend”, I don’t even think about that. I think with my mom, I started throwing that into conversation while I was in college/university, because that’s when we started talking about that stuff. She told me she didn’t understand bisexuality (to her she saw it only as being indecisive or a possible disease carrier), but she wasn’t hostile to me. She just said it was what she thought, but she didn’t care as long as I was happy.
And these days she seems to get it, so she did come around. Also, I’m pretty sure she just wants me to settle down, whether it’s with a guy or a girl. As long as whoever I’m with treats me well and “gets me”.
My dad doesn’t really care one way or another because those kinds of issues never mattered to him. The only thing he really cares about is cars. So, if I showed up at the front door with a woman, he probably wouldn’t bat an eyelash. But if she turned up in a Jeep or a Pontiac, then he’d judge (can confirm, we are very much car snobs in the family, due to being three generations of European mechanics :P) and she’d be found wanting haha. He’s so the opposite of the rigid German-Austrian of his parents, it’s hilarious. They get so uptight about some stuff and he’s just like... Meh.
(I get a lot of my inspiration for writing Sasuke from my dad, because he’s just so calm about everything haha).
my brother’s the same. He doesn’t care.
As for the rest of my family, I don’t see them/interact with them enough to hear/care about what they think about it. I don’t hide it, if that’s what you mean (I’m pretty much listed on facebook as being bi), but I also don’t walk around with a strap-on dildo and sing it from the high heavens, you know?
TL;DR My bisexual identity and coming out weren’t really a big thing. It all just happened real casual like, and the people who know are the ones who matter, and they’re all okay with it. Even if they weren’t, I wouldn’t care, because the important thing is to be okay with me.
So if you’re struggling with your own bisexuality, you have to figure out what you want and what will make you happy. Obviously, it depends on your family situation and your self-confidence level (if my parents weren’t cool and supportive about it my story would have been a lot harder, but I’m pretty sure I would have gotten to the same place eventually), but the most important thing is to be honest with yourself. Even if you don’t have the luxury of coming out in your current situation, just having your own self-affirmation of the fact takes a real load of your shoulders.
But everyone in their own time and their own manner, right?
Thanks for the ask.
