A transcript of the Apollo 11 post-flight conference with Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Michael Collins. The three astronauts gave a report of the mission, discussed the 40 photographs taken during the mission, and answered questions from the press.
ARMSTRONG- “I just see it as beginning, not just this flight, but in this program which has really been a very short piece of human history—an instant in history“
REPORTER- “Based on your own experiences in space, do you or any of you feel that there will ever be an opportunity for a woman to become an astronaut in our space program?” ARMSTRONG- “Gosh, I hope so.”

DE - Website for USAFA research projects is down or non existent, so their research centers have not been used as terms. This search returns very few results(~3K). Each special office or research lab added typically will only return a few (1-10) results, but these results seem unique to the specific office or agency and many authors are only listed as being in the “Air Force ISR Agency” or something like that. In an inspection of the searches some authors were associated with a specific air force base, curious if all people involved with an AFB that are also writing papers are federal employees/officers (I think not ARA, in Tyndale AFB seems to be an international LLC). Will look into on next iteration of search. RI - AirForceSearch01.PQAirForce.0001.2.9 RI - AirForceSearch01.PQAirForce.0002.2.9 RI - AirForceSearch01.PQAirForce.0003.2.9 QY - AF(“USAFA” OR “United States Air Force Academy” OR “U.S. Air Force Academy” OR “Air Force Academy” OR “United States Air Force” OR “USAF” OR “af.mil” OR “Air Force Civil Engineer Center” OR “Air Combat Command” OR “Air Education and Training Command” OR “Air Force Inspection Agency” OR “Air Force ISR Agency” OR “Air Force Material Command” OR “Air Force Office Of Special Investigations” OR “Air Force Research Laboratory”)
i noticed this too around 2017 things going down, public databases going down or getting “censored”.

Department of Justice. Federal Bureau of Investigation. FBI Annual Report 1970 Fiscal Year. John Edgar Hoover. J 1.14/1:970. Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1970. Full text available via HathiTrust.
“Each contingent [of the Venceremos Brigade] reportedly performed manual labor in harvesting sugar cane. During their Cuban stay, the Havana government attempted to indoctrinate Brigade members in revolutionary tactics and propaganda. Members were visited by various revolutionary speakers from communist-controlled countries who praised peace demonstrations in the United States. They were imbued with the idea that they were the vanguard of the revolution in the United States. Movies glorifying the Cuban Revolution were shown. Fidel Castro personally visited with Brigade members and requested another brigade of American students to travel to Cuba in the summer of 1970 to help with the harvest of citrus fruits. In view of the revolutionary backgrounds of some of the Brigade members, they can be reasonably viewed as potential threats to our national security.” p. 22-23
This annual report provides a curated view of FBI activities pertaining to crime, civil rights, and domestic and foreign intelligence work in the 1970 fiscal year. It also includes both provocative and stylized photographs depicting crime incidents, FBI employees working onsite or in the field, and FBI campuses.
This source aggregates political public-facing perceptions and narratives put forth by the FBI regarding a variety of topics—including its own image as a state of the art, sleek crime fighting force protecting American citizens from threatening communists, criminals, and people of color. However, it is important to note this is a propagandistic, racist, and fear mongering tool that has been used to manufacture consent within the government and larger public for expanding intelligence agencies’ budgets and powers. Its findings should be considered with a degree of skepticism. The report employs quantitative data and staged or selective photos to obscure the FBI’s overreach, civil rights and privacy violations, and violence against politically left organizations—especially those comprised of Black, Indigenous, and other people of color—working to address historic and contemporary US systemic oppression, white supremacy, colonialism, and imperialism.

The Federal Art Project was a part of the New Deal which employed nearly 400 artists who collectively created over 100,000 works of art-- including paintings, prints, murals, photographs mosaics, sculptures, and more. The Federal Art Project also made art more accessible throughout the US by funding live theater and music and art classes throughout the country.

The Smithsonian Institution, Eighth Annual Report
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Every city has its library, so has almost every village, and so have a large number of our common schools. Familiar as this fact is to many of us, it presents a new phase of society, and one indicative of mighty influences. The library is the necessary complement of the school. To teach children to read, and then to give them nothing to supply the desire awakened, is mockery."
The Eighth Annual Report of the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution gives an account of the operations, expenditures, and the condition of the Institute up to the time of this publication in 1854, as well as the previous annual reports going back to the founding of the Institution and the will of its benefactor, James Smithson.
The report of the Assistant Secretary in charge of the Library, Charles C. Jewett, reports the additions to and total numbers of the collections of the Smithsonian Institution Library in 1854. Jewett emphasizes the value of the exchange and donation of material, as opposed to purchasing items. He also reports to the Board the nation-wide need for libraries, and proposes one central, "voluntary yet harmonious" library system.

Growing a Garden and a Community
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Department of Housing and Urban Development publication to assist in the planning and development of Neighborhood Network centers. This specific document introduces a method of improving community involvement through community gardening. It uses the Rainer Visita Neighborhood Community Gardens project of Seattle as a model example to show how gardening impacts the residents. After which, it offers tips and highlights resources for launching a community garden project.
Martha Goodlett, Seattle P-Patch Program Coordinator, noted:
“The Community Supported Agriculture projects bring middle-income persons into low-income areas of the neighborhood. Many of these people would not otherwise have ventured into the area. It helps remove some of the myths people have had about low-income areas. This community-building process also enriches the lives of residents who have had only limited contact with middle-income persons. When our consumer families make telephone calls to our gardener-merchants to find out how their sick child is doing, we know we are breaking down barriers.”

“The story of the efforts to meet this earthquake threat begins decades earlier, when earth scientists first recognized that the Pacific Northwest contains a boundary between two of the tectonic plates that make up the earth’s surface ... Deciphering the geological past is one of the ways that earth scientists help to protect citizens of the United States from loss of life and property in the future.”

A version of the U.S. Army’s “Armor in Battle” training manual originally published in 1986 that has been updated to account for subsequent military operations such as the NATO interventions in the Balkans, the Gulf War, and the War on Terror.  This version also commemorates the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Armored Branch of the U.S. Army.  It contains detailed account of large and small-scale actions involving U.S. armor throughout history that serve to both inspire and educate current Armored Branch officers.  As such, it both lays out the history of armor (tanks) within the U.S. military and provides important examples of the role of armor on the battlefield and how it can be successfully employed.
“Armor’s versatility and unique combat capabilities should be clear from the articles that follow. Too often, these qualities have been misunderstood or marginalized by an overemphasis upon the limitations of armored combat organizations. Yet, the importance attached to combined arms maneuver by today’s Army necessitates that all team members understand the true capabilities of each team component. Tanks and armored organizations possess tremendous combat power, mobility, and shock effect that must be understood to maximize their impact and achieve decisive overmatch in battle. Such comprehension is a must for all soldiers, regardless of branch, who will lead, train, or plan the deployment of armored organizations. Hence, this work targets a broad audience that includes Armor personnel in addition to all soldiers, civilians, and contractors who support combined arms and joint operations.”

“Resolved, That the United States shall use its good offices and take appropriate measures to the end that the doors of Palestine shall be opened for free entry of Jews into that country, and that there shall be full opportunity for colonization, so that the Jewish people may ultimately reconstitute Palestine as a free and democratic Jewish commonwealth.”
This document is a record of the 1944 hearings before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on the Jewish national home in Palestine. The quote above is taken from the resolution summary on page one; what follows is over 500 pages of records of the hearings that took place over February 8th, 9th, 15th, and 16th in 1944 (78th Congress, second session).
Israel, which was formally created as a Jewish nationalist state in May 1947 by the United Nations, is currently an international focal point, with many Palestinian activists and their allies arguing that Israeli Jewish nationalism is a form of apartheid. While many defenders of Israel are quick to resist narratives of Jews as a colonial force in Palestine, this document from 1944 demonstrates that the United States and other imperial Western powers that were large players in the creation of Israel saw its creation as a “colonization” of Palestinian land.

Amy Klobuchar, US Senator from Minnesota, on January 6 2021, prior to recess: “January 6 is not typically a day of historical significance for our country. "Save Our Tails!”
Learn the history of Florida’s roadside attractions and how retired mermaids fought to keep the Weeki Wachee Mermaid Show alive.
“During World War II, tourism was declared ‘an essential industry for entertainment of service men and women in the state.’ Many of the veterans who had been stationed in Florida returned there to settle after the war. Weeki Wachee Springs was opened in 1947 by an industrious Navy frogman instructor who had experimented with underwater breathing techniques. Combining the natural beauty of the crystal clear water, the drama of theater, and the draw of dazzling young swimmers, the attraction was dubbed the ‘City of Mermaids’ (Figure 1).”
