Excursions in Gwoka vol.1 (2022, Beauty And The Beat, BATB 005)
Bandcamp
Linear notes by Cédric Lassonde:
“‘A Ka Titine’ has long been a staple at our Beauty & the Beat parties, a dancers’ favourite and one of those truly special records which have become part of the party’s DNA. This is gwoka from Guadeloupe, a term which not only designates an authentic music genre from the Caribbean island, but also a specific dance and more spiritually the soul and identity of a people. Lyrics often express the uniqueness of Guadeloupean culture, through the codes and metaphors of the Creole language, acting effectively as transmission of a collective history. Gwoka is made up of seven distinct rhythms, each of them used for different social occasions, from baptisms to funerals. ‘A Ka Titine’ is based on the driving toumblak rhythm, one which expresses love and happiness, and the most often heard in party situations. Gaoulé Mizik were a seminal outfit which released two cult albums in the late 80s, alternating between gwoka traditionnel and fusion experiments which they described as gwoka évolutif. ‘A Ka Titine’ is straight-up gwoka traditionnel, with legendary singer Michel Laurent at the peak of his powers. The “Titine” of the song is the name of the beach hut’s owner where Michel goes to have some fish, ends up drinking rum and playing dominoes, before almost getting killed in a brawl (!). Laurent is in raconteur mode, akin to the role of a griot in Africa, acting like a chronicler of his time and singing about everyday chores and social issues.”

Deshaies, 11/2
Sista kvällen i Deshaies, sista kvällen i Karibien.
Kulinariskt bästa middagen i Karibien! Möjligen med undantag för någon Twister-måltid, vi åt väldigt bra på båten. Restaurangen hade, också denna, några foton från tv-serien uppsatta på väggarna där etablissemanget var scen för dramat. Lite kitschigt, men förbaskat god mat oavsett. Och förbaskat skickliga musiker på stället innan. Rejält röj. Mycket trevlig kväll. Fullträff som avslutning på min karibiska turné!
Imorgon är det dags att leta fram långbyxorna ur min digra packning. Det var ett tag sedan...

Kassav is an emblematic group in Caribbean music, its story begins with Pierre-Edouard Decimus, a member of Les VIKINGS, and Freddy Marshall, who conceive an innovative approach. Teaming up with Georges Decimus and Jacob Desvarieux, the group blends traditional Gwoka rhythms with modern techniques to create a new sound. Kassav emerges as an experimental concept, driven by reflection and a desire for progression. The first album, "Love and Ka Dance," is released in 1979.
Kassav evolves through various formations, exploring names like "Soukwé kò'w" or Kassav. The group stands out by predominantly performing live, recording numerous albums collectively and over thirty solo albums by its members . KASSAV was as well composed of Jocelyne Béroard , Jean Pierre Bélony, Patrick Saint Eloi, Jean Claude Naimro and Claude Villa .
Kassav became a symbol of pride and recognition for Caribbean music, captivating an expanding audience in Guadeloupe, Martinique, France and worldwide and where it embodies an identifying culture for youth distant from their island origins. The initial albums, deemed "ethnic" by major labels, are produced by Caribbean record companies and distributed by Sonodisc. From 1984 to 1987, Kassav partners with GD Productions, gaining international recognition with the 1984 album "Zouk-la sé sel médikaman nou ni," there by popularizing the term "Zouk" for their musical style.
Since 1985, Kassav has toured the world, drawing massive crowds in Africa, the Caribbean, France, and beyond. Hits like "Kolé séré" and "Zouk-la sé sel médikaman nou ni" enjoy great success. Despite distribution challenges, their impact endures, even inspiring new dances and musical styles. The story of Kassav, which commenced three decades ago in the Caribbean islands, showcases a unique creative fusion and a lasting musical influence on a global scale.

New Music | Jacques Schwarz-Bart
Jacques Schwarz-Bart has been at the center of several musical revolutions: Neo Soul next to D’angelo and Erika Badu, New Jazz as a founding member of Roy Hargrove's RH Factor, and he is a leading pioneer in the creation of two surging new styles: Gwoka Jazz, and Voodoo jazz, reuniting jazz music with its Afro-Caribbean and spiritual origins. Jacques’ impressionistic writing, powerful tone, and wide-ranging language – both lyrical and angular – have fueled a growing presence on the world stage.
Jacques Schwarz-Bart's new release will be his 11th. Entitled The Harlem Suite, it is a harvest of tunes and arrangements that celebrate each step OF his perilous but rewarding journey, from his native island of Guadeloupe to the heart of modern black music: Harlem, where he lived for 18 years.
The Harlem Suite by Jacques Schwarz-bart
"I started  playing the tenor sax at 24. Three years later, I quit my job at the French Senate to go to Berklee. At that point, coming to NY and playing with the likes of Roy Hargrove, D’Angelo, Meshell, Danilo Perez, was an impossible dream. And then it happened. Next to these giants, I started honing my playing and my musical vision."
The Harlem Suite portrays a modern jazz concept high in colors, built around powerful melodies,  infused with uplifting Afro Caribbean spirit, and dancing on a tapestry of poly rhythms. The line up includes Terri Lyne Carrington, Marcus Gilmore, Sullivan Fortner, Victor Gould, MattPenman, Reggie Washington, Arnaud Dolmen, Gregory Privat, Stephanie McKay, Malika Tirolien and Ivanna Cuesta.
