Markland Merchants – Viking Haithabu / Hedeby Knife with Leather Sheath

Designed by Markland Merchants to be a historically accurate utility knife for the serious Viking reenactor, this Viking utility knife has a blade of tempered and sharpened EN45 high carbon steel with an HRc hardness of 56-58 HRc. The grip is Poplar wood which has been intentionally left unfinished so that the reenactor can oil, stain, carve or modify the grip as desired. The Poplar wood is ideal for detailed carving which makes this knife an ideal project knife for you to customize to your own liking. The blade tang is durably secured into the hilt and the length of the tang runs about half the length of the grip. Included with the knife is a durable leather sheath of high quality vegetable-tanned leather with stitched construction. The sheath is left undyed so that it can be oiled or dyed to your preference for a custom finish.

This small Viking age knife or seax replica is crafted in a configuration that we decided upon after long hours of research. It is very much like many of the knives that reside in museums throughout Europe and Scandinavia. Examples of this type of knife would have been found all over Viking age Scandinavia, Europe, and the Eastern-Rus territories as far as Novgorod. It is not an exact example of one particular knife, it is an amalgamation of many knives of the same shape and size. Knives like these were used every day for carving wood, peeling fruit, cutting rope, or trimming meat. It was the utilitarian belt knife of the period and as such would have been readily available in large trade centers such as Haithabu/Hedeby, Jorvik, and Birka.

Ancient Jewelry and Coin Hoard Found in Germany

Passing through modern-day Germany, a traveler stopped and buried his valuables in a bag. Although he likely planned to return for the gold items, he never did. Instead, he vanished, his treasure lost and forgotten for centuries.

Nicki Andreas Steinmann was a volunteer-in-training learning to use a metal detector properly, the Archaeological State Office of Schleswig-Holstein said in a Feb. 17 news release. He was working with an instructor near the Haithabu and Danewerk World Heritage Site.

Haithabu was a Viking trade center and settlement from the eighth to 11th centuries, according to the German UNESCO World Heritage Sites Association.

Steinmann’s instructor assigned him an area near the Viking trade center to scan with a metal detector, the release said. Searching the area, he found something.

Buried in the dirt, Steinmann found a few coins and some gold artifacts. He called in the field director to look at the finds and further excavate the area.

Steinmann had stumbled on a gold hoard buried by a traveler about 800 years before, archaeologists said. Although some objects had been shifted around, some of the coins were still stacked on top of each other, indicating they were buried together.

The stash included two high-quality gold earrings carefully crafted in a Byzantine style, the release said. Photos show the intricate jewelry. Although some are missing, each earring was originally decorated with about a dozen colorful stones.

A gold-plated robe clasp was also uncovered, an imitation of an Islamic coin, experts said. The clasp was decorated with intricate Arabic writing, photos show.

Archaeologists unearthed 30 coins in the hoard. Many of these coins dated to the reign of the Danish king Waldemar II who ruled from 1202 to 1241, the release said. Among the coins, a few fragments of fabric were preserved, indicating the items were likely buried in a bag.

Although the items were found near the Viking-era trade center, the age of the coins indicates the hoard was buried after Haithabu was destroyed, experts said. Two gold-plated rings, a ring fragment and a few other small gold discs were also uncovered, the release said.

The Haithabu and Danewerk World Heritage Site is near Busdorf in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, about 335 miles northwest of Berlin.

Stunning gem-covered gold earrings discovered in 800-year-old hoard in Germany

A trainee metal detectorist in northern Germany recently hit on something his mentor never expected: an 800-year-old hoard of gold jewelry and silver coins that hints at the area's trade connections.

The large hoard contained a dazzling collection of artifacts. "The hoard consisted of two very high quality gold earrings set with semi-precious stones, a gilded pseudo-coin brooch, two gilded stone-studded finger rings, a ring fragment, a small formerly gilded perforated disc, a ring brooch, and about 30 silver coins, some of them heavily fragmented," Ulf Ickerodt, director of the State Archaeological Department of Schleswig-Holstein (ALSH), told Live Science in an email.

For decades, amateur and professional archaeologists have been working together to investigate the region of Schleswig-Holstein, and in particular the UNESCO world heritage site of Haithabu. Read more.

my last few days were alright, had a couple issues at work but other than that, it was okay.

and hmm, i don't really go by albums tbh, like for most artists i don't even know the names of the albums lol, even tho i know all the individual songs by heart. but some albums i *can* name would be "this is your sign" and "scarecrow" by citizen soldier, "haithabu - im auge des sturms" by santiano (german band) and of course the killing eve soundtrack by unloved :) how about you?
