Markland Merchants – Viking Haithabu / Hedeby Knife with Leather Sheath
Designed by Markland Merchants to be a historically accurate utility knife for the serious Viking reenactor, this Viking utility knife has a blade of tempered and sharpened EN45 high carbon steel with an HRc hardness of 56-58 HRc. The grip is Poplar wood which has been intentionally left unfinished so that the reenactor can oil, stain, carve or modify the grip as desired. The Poplar wood is ideal for detailed carving which makes this knife an ideal project knife for you to customize to your own liking. The blade tang is durably secured into the hilt and the length of the tang runs about half the length of the grip. Included with the knife is a durable leather sheath of high quality vegetable-tanned leather with stitched construction. The sheath is left undyed so that it can be oiled or dyed to your preference for a custom finish.
This small Viking age knife or seax replica is crafted in a configuration that we decided upon after long hours of research. It is very much like many of the knives that reside in museums throughout Europe and Scandinavia. Examples of this type of knife would have been found all over Viking age Scandinavia, Europe, and the Eastern-Rus territories as far as Novgorod. It is not an exact example of one particular knife, it is an amalgamation of many knives of the same shape and size. Knives like these were used every day for carving wood, peeling fruit, cutting rope, or trimming meat. It was the utilitarian belt knife of the period and as such would have been readily available in large trade centers such as Haithabu/Hedeby, Jorvik, and Birka.

So, I have been writing my heart out these last few days, but I still need some time to edit the stuff and there are still a few moving pieces which require a larger context to slot into place, so I will be updating soon, but I am really so knackered, I cannot get myself to start editing. But.
I just went through some of the pictures from my Viking road trip part 1, I did last year.
I don't think I have mentioned this one before, but when I visited Copenhagen and Roskilde (the Viking Ship Museum not the festival, because honestly, I am just that kind of geek) last year, a map fell into my hands. A map with aaaall the Viking museums in Denmark. And I made it my mission to visit them all (see what I am talking about with the whole geek thing?). I am currently at 4 out of 12, I believe, plus 1 extra, because it is in Germany, and that is where these pictures are from. Last August, I started on said mission and took my bike on the train and drove to the small German town of Schleswig. Site of the Viking age city of Haithabu aka Haddeby aka Hedeby the name fans of Vikings (the show) are probably most familiar with. So, this is part of the Open Air Museum (again, not the festival type).
Just in case anyone wanted to know, but I guess no one did, from Schleswig, I took a regional train to Flensburg, just to ride my bike across the Danish border and over to Toender (just some 50km), because apparently there is no train connection from east to west in that area of Denmark. From Toender I took the much appreciated Arriva tog to Ribe aka Ripa. It was quite the adventure in itself, but totally and absolutely worth it. I didn't make it up to Bork this time, but if we get to travel again this summer, Bork will be the next cross on the map.
Anywho, here is beautiful Hedeby:

I'm gonna start a new way too ambitious crafting project
so my 3yo nephew currently has a viking phase and I, being an incurable showoff said is anyone gonna make this kid an outfit & didn't wait for an answer
(before ordering fabric)
Anyway, first of all, what do viking clothes actually look like? not that complicated, as it turns out
Tumblr media
reconstructed outfit from a grave, Birka museum
Tumblr media
stolen from the Instagram of Haithabu museum
that's fairly straightforward, not too complicated, I should be able to do smth similar. but wait! the image media presents of vikings definitely does not look like this at all. it usually includes far more black, chainmail, and an obscene amount of furs. so. how to make sure this is something a tiny 3yo brain can recognize as viking themed? what does he think vikings look like?
luckily this phase wasn't triggered by modern media but this adorable anime from the 70s
Tumblr media
hey, hey Wickie!
If we ignore the horned helmets, that's actually not too bad, esp the supporting characters! The silhouette is there, the bright colours, some even have their legs wrapped as shown above. The sleeveless overtunics are a bit anachronistic, but I've definitely seen worse.
Tumblr media
so much worse
so I think I'm gonna do an abt knee-length over- and undertunic, trousers, a belt, and not pictured so far, but some sort of cloak or hood for colder weather should be included too, I think. I'm gonna skip the leg wraps, because that seems like too much of a hassle for a toddler (& I can't imagine people from the time would have gone through the trouble, either. at least not for every day wear). something like this:
Tumblr media
I'm not good at drawing but you get the idea.
I also already bought some fabric :)
Tumblr media
it's hanging out to dry currently & I'm waiting for my sis to send me measurements. I think I'm gonna start with the undertunic.
or with some bands, depending on how long it takes her :)
