Dear Yuletide Writer,
thank you for offering one of the small surreal-ish fandoms of my heart and I hope you will have fun writing for it. Anything can happen! Symbols! Meaningful non sequiturs! Things! Stuff!
All prompts and ideas are just suggestions, if you are the kind of Yuletide writer who likes to follow them. If not, cool, they are certainly not the end-all of what I love about these fandoms and characters.
If you like visual prompts, this entire blog is 20% recipes and 80% aesthetics that mostly fit my requested fandoms…
I like found families, oddball friendships, sympathy toward outcasts, characters who fully embrace being outcasts, melancholy, a sense of place, bittersweet accomplishments, and a stubborn flicker of hope in an overall bleak world. Dreamlike atmospheres that aren’t necessarily scary, some sort of reassurance that can be found in the weird and the profoundly unnatural.
Myst - worldbuilding (badum tsssssss)
This went too well last year not to ask for it again ç^ç Worldbuilding as an expansion of any of the Ages we don't know too much about - Eder Gira's huts in the distance, Tay stuff inside the hive a/o above the cliffs, Myst's underground rooms, strange sightings on Todelmer, you name 'em. But also world-building as in good old-fashioned focus on the Art, whether it's about a canon Age (anyone else think about instancing too much and get a headache, for one? I think Relto and the instanced Cavern itself are fertile ground for dreamy-weird-spooky fic...) or a made-up Age.
I love the whole cast, so feel free to pin that worldbuilding to any era of canon, following pretty much anyone. I nominated Atrus, Catherine and Yeesha because I love them so much and they all have interesting approaches to Writing, but if your idea works better with, idk, Ri'neref or the Watcher or Gehn or Esher or Zandi or Nelah or some schmuck on Releeshahn or whatever, go for it! I am not particularly well-versed in pre-Fall D'ni shenanigans - I'd be interested in reading something set anywhere in those millennia, just please write it assuming that your reader may not be already up to speed on what was going on historically at the time.
Twin Peaks - Tammy Preston
I see a Twin Peaks character, I want to see them face the unknown, cross a threshold, tread into a different world, have a terrifying epiphany. You know, as they do.
Tammy, though, more so than Albert, has a way of being down to earth as we see in the books, and she's got some breathing space between herself and the trauma that keeps propagating itself through Blue Rose on one side (the loss of Phil, of Chet, Sam, Coop) and the town of Twin Peaks on the other (Laura, Maddie, Annie, Audrey, gonna go out on a limb and say Donna and Harry too).
Does shooting Diane shift something in her?
Or does she remain a potential anchor for others who are adrift?
Cynthia could be a fun partner for supernatural casefic, shippy or not. She's the Air Force side of Blue Rose to Tammy's FBI, like Milford and Gordon in The Secret History, and later Garland and Cooper... we don't know much about her but I love her attitude, I think they'd be a formidable team. ...or they could simply go out one night in Buckhorn before Cynthia flies back. And find a ghost or something.
There was an old interview where CB was asked whether she felt that Tammy was “the new Cooper” and she said no but Tammy is trying her best!!! And that Coop is more open to the unknown, and Tammy is only just starting. As I think that Cooper's failures are a big part of the narrative, I'm not sure anyone should aspire to be the new Cooper, but anyway, I've been wondering about these two characters interacting (in dreams?) ever since. Reaching out to her as the new Blue Rose agent and/or as someone who is just starting to peek 'between two worlds', warning her, teaching her, getting to know her and even seeing shades of Albert and Gordon in her. And what would she think of him? And maybe Laura is with him, or maybe it's just Laura and Tammy, secrets whispered to her ear, a world just for them. Maybe Laura could be a better teacher. She knows the darkness. Or maybe she would be too intense.
Codex Seraphinianus - worldbuilding
Take a page, any page, and tell me more about it! The rainbows thing, the potted deer, the swimming trees, the literally any illustration in here, look at them, they're great. Translate the text! Connect... things? Are there narrative paths through this copious amount of nonsense? Go fake academia on this - considering the text a total cipher or pretending we can read it? If you want to get philosophical, metaphysical and/or high concept in any other way, go for it! As long as it's all weird.

GodHatesGoths, a Retrospective.
Or how a parody website and the Satanic Panic of the aughts combined to scare the shit out of everyone until the FBI got involved. Yeah, THAT FBI.
A Nugget Hears “Goth” for the First Time
Let me preface this with a story. The year was 2002. I was but a little nugget attending church with my mother when a guest preacher took to the alter and began a sermon on the most bizarre thing I’ve ever heard of: Satanic gladiatorial cage death matches in goth clubs. This was the very first time I ever heard the word “Goth”. The preacher went on to read testimonials about how goths worship the devil, preform weird blood rituals, and apparently murder each other with maces while listening to heavy metal. That is until a kindly Man-of-God comes up and tells them that kitten sacrifice is mean and they should read a bible. The preacher assured us that this was all real and the reason no one has ever heard any of this from the news was because the Devil was keeping it a secret. Now remember, I was a gullible little nugget and believed pretty much anything an adult told me until I turned twelve. When I was twelve, I got a mallgoth friend. She wore those corset-and-tutu style Tripp minidresses and NewRocks to school. She had multiple piercings and black lipstick and listened to bands like Evanescence. She wasn’t scary or violent and that made me re-think everything I was told. The year 2007 hits and so did high school. Now I’m beginning my own babybat journey, becoming interested in the music and subculture, reading JtHM and binging on Tim Burton movies. About a year goes past and I meet someone who reminds me very much of the preacher from six years ago. This time, however, they have something to cite their strange accusations off of - a website. GodHatesGoth . com.
Ugly Layouts, Uglier Words
The website itself is pretty unappealing. It opens up with photo of the Columbine shooters and a wall of text composed of bible verses and honestly offensive reasoning as to they’re quoting those specific verses. There are also two links for “Goths” or “Parents” to enter the website, each leading to a different forward message depending on the option chosen. The main site itself is ugly. The format is extremely basic, even for a website made in 2007, consisting of almost entirely text in three colors and a single sans-serif font over a plain grey background. About a fourth the links on the main page lead to an “under construction” message or are broken entirely because the site was never actually finished. Working links are mostly internal and lead to pages with short articles such as “GOTHS ARE THE DEVIL’S CHILDREN” or “YOUR CHILDREN ARE LYING TO YOU”. All of these articles are absurdly over-the-top in their stories about the depravity of the subculture. There’s a decent amount of references to teen killers or school shootings. A good chunk of the website is also lists of “depraved” things one’s goth teenager might be up to, but you’ll get tonal whiplash when said lists jump from “Goths do evil things such as read Anne Rice, sacrifice Christian babies to Satan, and sleep too much/little.” Quite a lot of the website jumps from scenarios that are completely mundane and can describe literally any teenager ever to crimes so outlandish you’d swear it came from a budget horror movie. There’s also excessive amounts of homophobia, ableism, sexism, and racism within the mix. It should be noted at this point that the website is a hoax. A parody of the hyperbolic anecdotes such as those told by the preacher I listened to as a kid. But what spurred this website’s existence in the first place? If it is a parody, what is it a parody of?
Setting the Stage
The Satanic Panic had already been going on for three decades by the turn of the century. The latest of its targets being Marilyn Manson and the goth subculture after the mislabeling of the Columbine shooters as goths. The Satanic Panic was a moral panic that things such as rock music, Dungeons and Dragons, or Harry Potter were corrupting youth and leading them into mysterious cults that ate babies or sacrificed virgins in the woods. Many news stations ran with sensationalist headlines about suspected spooky activity, but many claims were unfounded or - in the case of the stories that spurred the whole panic in the first place- fraudulent. The damage had been done, however, and people were on edge. This paranoia was only doubled with the general sense of fear people held after the attacks of September 11, 2001. People were afraid in general, people tend to fear things that are new or things they don’t understand, and all of a sudden teenagers were a thing they didn’t understand. Not to say that adults ever understood the youth in the first place, but this was also the height of MySpace, Emo, and Scene culture. Parents didn’t know what Emos were, but they knew what Goth was, so they attributed the dark clothes and dreary music to that. So the stage was set and people were afraid of the dark, leading to rumors spreading, speculation running wild, and the rising fanfare from hardcore Evangelical Christian groups.
The Fallout of Fear
Like every moral panic, this fear-mongering whipped people into a frenzy against a perceived threat. With the internet becoming more accessible and people suddenly knowing what was happening half-way across the world in seconds it seemed like more and more stories of goths being discriminated against coming out daily. Getting thrown off buses, out of malls, getting rocks thrown at them. Angela Benedict of youtube fame mentioned a “Beat the Freak Week” at her high school where the alternative kids were kept in the gymnasium to save them from the other students looking to cause harm. In 2002 Blue Springs, Missouri was granted $273,000 to “combat Goth culture”. The town ended up returning a little over half the amount back to the federal government due to goths not actually being a problem. The worst came in 2007, however, when Sophie Lancaster and Robert Maltby were attacked when walking through a park late at night. Both were jumped by a group of teenagers and beaten, fell into comas, and thirteen days later Sophie's life was terminated when it was found she would never wake up. Like that, the tables have turned. Public opinion was beginning to change. Petitions were forming to make discrimination and attacks on goths hate crimes across Europe and the United States. This change of perspective was compounded with growing distaste for ultra-outspoken Evangelical hate groups such as the Westboro Baptist Church and was leading more and more people to be on the look-out for similar organizations.
Black Suits, Green Reverend
Because of its similarities to the rhetoric of the Westboro Baptist Church and other organizations, and the previously described attacks, the website itself was becoming a concern to members of the subculture and eventually it was reported as a hate group to the FBI by a concerned goth. After engaging with the a yahoo group that was connected to the website and trying to dispel the frankly disgusting misconceptions the church held about he goth subculture, the goth decided that the mentions of abuse (Such as putting the head of an alternative granddaughter in an oven and giving her burns.) were enough to alert authorities. The website was associated with “God’s Hammer Baptist Church” and was under the management of Reverend RG Green, same with the forum and Yahoo group. In all of them they mention various activities of the church members ranging from child abuse to arson. This, of course, was alarming to the FBI so they decided to go digging and find out when these events happened, considering an arson would make news somewhere, and they failed to find anything. Church members supposedly involved cease to exist when looked into further. Two years after the investigation began the FBI actually visited the GodHatesGoths website and found the disclaimer in their about page explaining the site and related peoples and events to be entirely fictional. Reverend RG Green and his church never existed in the first place.
Parody Payout
So what did we learn here? That the government wasted resources investigating a fake church? Well, yes, but there’s a bit more than that. It was a look into cultural mindsets at the time. A shift from the “beat the freak week” and public disdain for anything that wasn’t “mainstream” to the spearheading of campaigns that protect others from those wishing to harm them on the basis of identity - including subcultural identity. Like I mentioned at the very beginning of this article, the people GodHatesGoths was parodying were very real. I’ve met a lot of people like them in the past and I’m sure to meet more in the future. They aren’t any less loud than they used to be, I’ll see them outside malls or museums with megaphones and bright signs about the wrath of God, but at the very least they draw the proper ire from most of society now.
The reason I wanted to write this little article was because this was something that definitely shaped my coming into the subculture. It was the mid-late 2000s and I was on forums arguing with people claiming to be from God’s Hammer Baptist. I remember people talking about this website back on MySpace and posting now deleted videos about it on early YouTube. Something that felt so big as a kid is now so obscure that almost no one’s heard of it and it kind-of baffles me. I feel like there’s been an effort to preserve and document 80s and 90s goth subculture, but I don’t see a lot of people talking about the 2000s. Cybergoth was getting big, goth comics had a HUGE boom and the subculture suddenly had more off-shoots than it could deal with. Somehow it was both old-hat and producing more than ever before. And no one really talks about that.
So, do you remember this website? Ever meet someone that this website was parodying? New to the subculture and happy to listen to a not-so-elder goth talk about the past? I’d love to hear your feedback!

As for why they put Special Agent Griffin down here while they repaired some water damage in hey office, he was far less certain of. She had seemed like a perfectly normal, even boring, agent. Not somebody you stick into a basement hoping to forget like a bad d.i.y project.

Aight aight here’s what I got:
(I’ve not watched season 15 cause I was queerbaited by the gay Angel confession, but from what I’ve gathered there wasn’t a lot to work with in the first place)
First off, keep the final villain ig, this plan works with any (altho it would be a lot more satisfying if it was built up but this is what we have) vampire clowns or whatever. Doesn’t matter. What does matter is that Dean doesn’t die. He gets injured, severely injured, and ends up permanently disabled.
This prompts Sam to suggest retirement, which Dean is resistant to. They put it off for a while, go on hunts, during one of which Sam reconnects with Eileen. They get serious and Sam brings up retirement again, and Dean finally relents.
They buy separate houses right next to each other. Sam and Eileen get married, have a daughter named Mary Maura Winchester. Dean is the fun uncle, always teaching Mary tricks and things her father doesn’t allow. Like shooting a gun, which Dean considers essential, but Sam is firm that she doesn’t need to learn that yet. This actually causes a conflict for a while until they inevitably make up.
They both have some form of PTSD after all their fucking trauma. Sam’s manifests as night terrors. Constantly waking up in the night, hallucinating his father or his brother or Lucifer or Jack or the hundred other people that have died because of him, have hurt him. Eileen has grown used to this - she’s not without her own traumas after all - and they learn to navigate this together.
Dean’s manifests as paranoia. He keeps a police scanner in his house and constantly listens to the chatter. He keeps a log of unusual sightings that never result in anything. Once, he got drunk at a bar and became convinced the bouncer was a shapeshifter - “laser-eyes,” he told Sam, who dragged him out before a fight could start. Never mind Sam shook his hand with his silver wedding band, which prompted no reaction (a handy thing really - Eileen’s idea).
Dean really tries. He tries to pick up hobbies - he became briefly infatuated with wood carving, which Mary kept a few of his early pieces on a shelf above her bed - then after that coaching Mary’s Little League team, but he resigned after one year for being too rough on the kids - and he finally settled for bartending, and kept that for far longer than anyone thought he would, including his boss.
Dean really tried, but even after years of forcing domesticity, he still kept track of the color of the sky or natural disasters, still keeping a log of murders and missing persons, still on guard for the next apocalypse, the next big-bad that will try to kill them or kill the world or both. Even after all these years, he has to do something.
After Mary manages to recite the Latin exorcism verse back to him and successfully shoot a bottle from a stone’s throw away, Sam gives him an earful that reminds them both awfully of their father. I dont want Mary to worry about that, Sam said. I don’t want Mary to be like us.
How is she going to protect herself when you’re not there, then? In this world?
We made this world safe, Sam had said. We did it for a reason. For her.
And later, Dean nurses a glass of something cheap that smells of gasoline while thumbing the well-loved photo from an unused FBI ID, one that’s printed with a false name and a familiar face, and he wonders how this is supposed to be their happy ending when something is so desperately missing.
It shouldn’t have been a surprise then, when Sam goes to check on Dean a few quiet days later and finds his brother’s very few precious possessions gone, impala included. He tells Mary some excuse that her uncle’s gone traveling and, secretly, privately, quizzes her on the exorcism verses and their matching signs.
(He didn’t go after Dean because - well, it should be obvious. They’re older. Sam found out a month prior he could keel over from a heart attack any day now. Eileen is eight weeks pregnant. He can’t be responsible for his brother anymore, not when he has his girls, his family, to look out for now.)
They have a boy. They name him Dean, out of remembrance, since Sam is sure the next time he’ll see his brother is a John Doe in the newspaper, and give him the middle name Edward-John out of obligation.
Dean is approaching his first birthday when their neighbors are murdered.
Nice people, the Ashleys, if overbearing in their unwaveringly friendly personalities. They seemed to try very hard to get everyone in the neighborhood to like them, which made it even more shocking to discover Adam Ashley’s body strung like a kabob on the power lines between their houses.
Sam didn’t jump the gun, which was reasonable in a small town where, for the last fifteen years, nothing at all insinuous has happened, but it was the protective father and skilled hunter in him that double checked the locked doors at night, poured salt beneath the windows, and kept a loaded shotgun beside the bed.
Only days later, the Bishop’s girl, Vanessa, was subjected to the same fate. That hit Mary the hardest; Vanessa was on her Little League team, and it’s not a great thing to deal with for a pre-teen just entering high school.
For the first time in over a decade, Sam took inventory of his arsenal while Mary was at school and Dean was asleep. He cleaned and reloaded his guns, sharpened his daggers, restocked the salt bags. Carved stakes, shined silver, and flipped through his old log book to hopefully find whatever the fuck is tormenting the kids in his domain.
Eileen walks in and watches him from the doorway for a while. Then she claims the spot beside him and starts reloading the pistols, her fingers still deft and quick. Quicker than he is, and she gives him a smug smirk as she takes the next one, and Sam huffs a laugh and carry on like they aren’t preparing for the worst to hit their picturesque homescape.
You know we can’t take it on alone, she says.
We have before, he tells her.
We were younger then. Less kids. She says this with a smile, but he knows the second birth took its toll on her and they’re still struggling with that loss.
We might be the only ones who can help, he says instead.
Your heart can’t take it.
I’ve survived worse.
She isn’t happy with his answer, especially when he looks away and she can’t read his lips.
Before this can lead to an argument, a series of heavy knocks come to their door. They glance at each other, and only in the way of a long marriage they communicate through couple’s telepathy. Sam tucks a glock in his pants as he approaches the front door while Eileen takes care of the mess of unregistered guns hidden beneath their family room’s floor.
Crafting a smile, Sam answers the door. He means to open with a friendly, Hey, how are ya? Followed by a fatherly pat on the back at whichever neighbor decided to drop by with condolences or gossip. Instead, he finds himself reeling at the visitors.
Two young woman stand just outside their front door, chests puffed, suits that are too wide on the shoulders and hang too low on their fingertips, hands holding out FBI badges, they spew a rehearsed speech about investigating the local murders.
Sam waits for them to finish before giving them a lopsided, more familiar grin, as he asks for their boss’ number.
The girls give each other a quick glance, one of internal panic and the other of external. The prior one digs out a business card with a number professionally printed on it, and Sam digs his cell phone out of his pocket and dials the number.
It rings, and rings, and Sam wonders if maybe he miscalculated, maybe he was wrong - and then a click.
Director Harris speaking.
Sam stifles a laugh. The gruff voice on the other end asks who’s calling and threatens to hang up. Sam pulls himself together long enough to speak.
Hey, Dean.
A long pause. Sam waits. The girls’ eyes are wide and they seem to be trying to communicate to each other through eyes only. Then,
Hi, Sammy.
Now I would end it there except I want more Castiel content and I know you do too, so, after this, the screen fades to black and we think the credits are gonna roll. But then, in the Empty, there’s a muffled voice saying something we can’t make out yet. There’s some static in the background that quiets and quiets and continues until, very clearly, we hear:
“Cas. Hey, Cas! Wake up!”
Cut to black, credits roll.

Verse basics:
Post Red Dragon: Years after the Tooth Fairy case, which effectively sent Will Graham into a second & far more lonesome retirement, the former Special Investigator returns to the FBI at the request of Jack Crawford. Wary & still recovering from a deep bout of post-divorce depression alcoholism, he finds a kind of ‘good enough’ solace in the classroom once more. He still recalls memories of the incident that traumatized him for a second time (the first being the death of Garrett Jacob Hobbs) & is particularly sensitive about the pronounced scar on the right side of his face; a constant reminder of Francis Dolarhyde. Though he is leery of the expectations that come with his return to duty, he does, on occasion, provide consultation to other federal agents.
Hannibal: Based upon the NBC series Hannibal, which follows a fictionalized reinterpretation of events within the Thomas Harris universe. Heavily altered to conform more towards the books but still compliant with the first two seasons.
Blood & Chocolate: A young & handsome artist living in New Orleans, LA. Will Graham is a curious thing with an aloof personality & a dark secret. His temperament leaves something to be desired but his heart is pure. He is strange, almost charming at times, & yet there is something off about him which no one can quite pinpoint. He is a mystery, but discovering him, bearing witness to his truths begs a tremendous price. Something wicked walks the path of the full moon & howls in bitter anguish.
New Orleans PD: Follows Will Graham in his younger years in which he served as a police officer & eventually homicide detective for the NOPD in his home state of Louisiana. Graham was an officer from the age of 22, & he did rise through the ranks from a beat cop to detective through his tenure there, where his gifts of imagination & perception were found beneficial in much greater scope. However, he was inevitably dismissed nearing his 30s as he was unable to draw or discharge his service firearm without extreme duress.

In the Labeled 'verse, are there any specific laws for supers who are minors? It seems like, if a hero is suspected to be under 18, they would have specific privacy laws in place. Though that would be kind of foiled by the whole 'secret identity' thing
Well, minors are not allowed to work as superheros for government agencies (kind of like a 16 year old isn’t going to be a FBI agent) and knowingly hiring one would be a big no no.
However, it’s really hard to control freelance ones. Can’t really stop them, but their guardians could get in trouble for child endangerment if they knowingly allowed it.
Also there are more strict protections for minors if their identities are revealed, both for heros and villains. If an adult gets unmasked (especially a villain) it gets plastered all over the papers in an instant. Though for heros there is usually an honor policy for government officials and a few actual laws for medical professionals, their identities do often get leaked if they are adults. However, for minors, the laws are a lot stricter. Even villains will usually not be revealed publicly even when they are charged. Of course, there are always people who go against this and the second the media gets a whiff of it, it’s over.
Actually, despite what Virgil might think, if he’d gotten arrested, it probably would have ended very well for him. Harry would have been dragged across the coals and he likely wouldn’t have been even charged being so young.
