carmy berzatto x reader
synopsis: it’s opening night and emotions are at an all time high
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
the sweat had muddled your vision, and you were close to a breakdown. carmy was nowhere to found, and you were counting down with the clock.
sydney had been giving out orders and you followed diligently, but you were distracted. he was your biggest weakness. whenever he entered a room, he would consume your thoughts completely, and even when he was not even there, he was all you could think about.
“where’s carm?” you asked, watching richie pass by you in his suit. he had taken to wearing suits now, and you respected him for it, even in the blazing heat of the kitchen.
richie walked over to the fridge and pointed, “he’s in timeout.” he knocked on the door and you could hear the muffled response of carmen, who was stuck in the fridge.
“fuck..” you muttered, the guilt of the past argument washed over you. carmy had yelled at you, and it was different this time, you had yelled back, and made it worse. you turned to watch your steak. you could hear the fat burning off as it cooked, all the seasonings sending the beautiful aroma to your nose. you had finally found your focus-
“what about claire?” richie asked fak, who had come into the kitchen, also wearing a suit. he had broken your focus, talking about the girl that carmen had been spending a lot of time with. he glanced over at you and turned his back, richie following. they continued to talk for a minute until they broke off, and both went out to the front.
you cursed, and looked over at sydney, “syd- did carm call the fridge guy?” this was the worst time to even ask, orders were coming out like crazy and you were still cooking your steak-
sydney looked at you with concern, “no. he’s going to be okay, chef.” you were like sisters, she could see your emotions on your face better than anyone. “i need that steak for table twenty one, chef. now.” she redirected you back to your work, and you swallowed thickly, nodding as you went back to your station.
though that didn’t seem to last long. you hadn’t noticed tina by the fridge door, didn’t even bother to notice that she had been talking for a few minutes to carmy. tina looked at you, waving her hand, “come here,” she whispered, “he’s asking for you.” she said as you neared. you stepped back, shaking your head, “no, tina, i-“ you couldn’t finish your protest as claire burst through the kitchen doors.
she looked at you, disdain just at the sight of you, she stalked over to the fridge door, leaning her ear on it just as tina did.
you completely shut down. staring at her do what you should be doing- it broke you. maybe the emotional turmoil wasn’t just because of your complicated relationship with carmy, maybe it was the fact that you, you opened a restaurant and that you were-
you ran back to your steak. it was burnt, all the fat and grease had been cooked out of the pan, the steak was practically smoking, only the burnt smell lingered. “fuck!” you yelled, grabbing the pan with the steak, you threw it into the nearest garbage. you looked over at sydney, eyes welling up with tears, “i’m sorry.” the tears fell immediately as you spoke, your voice quivered and so did your hands as you ripped off your apron.
“y/n!” sydney called after you but you didn’t even look back. you just kept walking until you hit the back door exit.
carmy felt like he was going crazy. he was crazy, he had come to realize that now. he was stupid, for not calling the fridge guy, otherwise he wouldn’t have been stuck in there.
he had been telling tina, telling her how he should’ve never let his attention split off from the restaurant, but it did. and he professed that unknowingly to claire, not knowing she was there to hear how much he regretted ever being with her.
it wasn’t so much as just the restaurant he wanted to focus on, it was you. claire had broken up with him, and yet all he could think about was you. he had begged tina to get you, but he had heard your rejection, and even heard you cursing before the sounds of pots and pans being thrown.
he had called out claire’s name, but it didn’t feel right.
you had been sitting outside contemplating. you had been in this spot before, the limbo of quitting before actually deciding to walk off. it’s happened a handful of times, and usually it wouldn’t need any convincing, but this felt like it did.
you had also found josh, the newly hired chef who had disappeared on tina, and now, “you’re fired.” you hadn’t hesitated to tell him, watching as his hands wrapped around the crack pipe. he had questioned your authority and you scoffed, “i’ve given five years of my life to this place. don’t tell ask me on what authority.”
marcus had come out to join you, although by the looks of it, not actually.
“are you okay?” marcus looked at you, surprised to find you sitting on an old milk crate. you shrugged, bring one of carmen’s cigarettes to your lips, “is he out yet?” you asked, and marcus shook his head, “fridge guy probably won’t get here till close. he’s stuck there.” he pulled out another milk crate and sat down next to it. you gave him a smile, offering a cigarette, “no thanks.” he shook his head, “but i thought you didn’t smoke?”
you nodded, “i don’t. i just miss him a little.” you looked at the cigarette, and laughed, you really did miss him, even if he was ten feet away locked in a little refrigerator, you were too hurt to talk to him.
marcus nodded, “this ain’t any of my business, but you and chef really need to stop being so mean to each other.” you whipped your head to marcus and faked a gasp, “us? mean?!” you laughed, knowing it was all too true, “we’re just people, still learning how to be people.” you inhaled some of the cigarette again, and marcus pursed his lips, “if it helps, he broke up with her.”
the silence filled the ache. tears started flowing and you couldn’t stop them. you felt a little hysterical, joy thrummed through you after marcus said that, but you wondered if it would all go back to normal.
carmy had been sitting in his regret for a while now. he could hear the bustling of everyone still working, but there was no one talking to him-
“carmy?” your voice sounded like an angel. it was soft, full of longing, yet there was sadness in it. he could hear it, hear that twinge.
“y/n? y/n, oh my god,” he grabbed his face, inhaling deeply, “y/n..” his chest felt tight and carmy inhaled trying to get more air.
you could hear him struggling to breathe. the fridge guy had appeared and it prompted you to go with him. you had asked just for five minutes to say something to carmen before they could start rescuing him. but it was going wrong.
“carmen!” you pounded on the door hoping to get some response but there was none.
“get this shit open, now!” you yelled at the fridge guy and sydney came to your side, “what’s wrong? what happened? is he okay?” she looked towards the door and saw the sparks as the fridge guy started using his tools to get the door open.
you shrugged, “this is all my fault- he’s having a panic attack and i-“ you were sobbing now, face buried in sydney’s shoulder, “i did this. he’s struggling because of me-“
sydney pulled you back, you looked eyes with her and she shook her head, “he’s struggling because he self sabotages everything. he did this to himself-“ she looked at the fridge, “he’s carmy.”
he’s carmy. you repeated to yourself, and turned to see the fridge guy getting the door cracked open.
and there he was.
his back was to one of the shelves, leaning into his knees, he was breathing hard and heavy.
“carmen?” you walked into the fridge, warily as you did so, you knelt down to his level, “carm?” you repeated his name until he looked up at you, “i’m sorry.” his hand motioned sorry on his chest and you closed your eyes, hugging him tightly without saying anything.
the success of opening night was unmatched. all of the staff was beaming with pride and excitement, this was only the beginning, and months of working at it had finally paid off.
you had left carmy talking with sugar and went with sydney, who was helping clean up. “hey.” you grabbed a trash bag and started tk dump a lot of stuff into it, “i fired josh, by the way. he was smoking crack. said it helped him.” you said the words in disbelief and all sydney could do was laugh, “oh god.” you matched her laughter, “i know! he even asked me if i should be firing him, like he wasn’t smoking crack?” sydney laughed harder now, “good riddance.”
there was a quiet beat, before you apologized, “i should’ve been focused on my job and not my personal life.” you looked down at the ground, “it’s my fault and im sorry, chef.” she had accepted your apology, and gave you a little hug, “it’s okay. it’s hard when your personal is your job.” she glanced at carmy, who was making his way towards you.
you parted from her and met carm halfway. he stopped and sighed, “i don’t know what to say.” he seemed calm, as if whatever storm was raging in his head had finally stopped.
“just tell me you’re done with her.” you leaned into him, wrapping your hands around his waist, he held you by yours. “i’m done with her.” he spoke, “i promise.”
another beat of silence, as you thought. the argument from earlier seemed long forgotten but you couldn’t forget it. “i’m sorry about..” you trailed off, “earlier. about earlier. i shouldn’t have been so stubborn.”
carmy shook his head, “it was my fault anyway. but i’m sorry for not thinking that this,” he grabbed you, “was even possible.”
you shrugged, “at least you got it eventually.” he nodded, laughing as he pecked you with another kiss.

the thing about daud is he had absolutely nailed down this grand metaphor with the masks, the whaling knives, living in the flooded and abandoned financial district he’s really successfully hitting the whaling metaphor of bloody slaughter for financial profit that the city runs on. he’s putting on a sort of tongue in cheek show for the city of pseudo respectability (except not really because he doesnt really ever seem or want to seem respectable hes just making. A Joke.) in that hes pretending at having this societally important profession while the people who hire him like burrows have this. barely concealed disgust and open fear of him. And he does this juuuuuust to be petty. And then like a tiny bit of the reality behind the metaphor hits him (maybe the whales suffer daud!), not even the whole force of it (endless bloodshed isnt a stable way to run a society!) and he absolutely loses his fucking mind and does the dunwall equivalent of selling off all your things and emptying your bank account to go live hashtag off the grid combined with a little saint augustine confessions rp. and we see the start of the manifestation of this breakdown. In a whale oil factory. Knife of dunwall truly game of all time.

much more context with an episode list below the poll!
more info below by episode (forgive me in advance if i forgot your favorite doctor-evolution episode) (also forgive me for all the mistakes i will immediately see once i hit post but will be unable to fix because we can't edit poll posts):
season one: "i wasn't programmed for any of this!"
"eye of the needle": after kes starts advocating for him, janeway offers him the power to turn himself off, and he asks for a name.
"heroes and demons": he leaves sickbay for the first time and has his first non-medical mission. he's emotionally affected by freya's death at the end.
season two: "before you, i was just a projection of photons held together by forcefields [...] just a profession, not a life."
"projections": he hallucinates an existential crisis about whether he's a human or a hologram.
"twisted": the doctor spends time recreationally with the crew on the holodeck for the first time (though it's not clear if he enjoys it).
"lifesigns": he falls in love with vidiian doctor danara pel. at first he says his program is malfunctioning, but later believes his programming is adapting instead. he also records his first personal log.
season three: "i'm footloose and fancy-free."
"the swarm": his program starts to degrade because he has been expanding it for hobbies like opera and friendships with the crew. he says his program should be rebooted so he can serve his "primary responsibility," but kes and the others convince him that his memories are important to keep. (factoid: we learn his maximum runtime was supposed to be 1500 hours.)
"future's end": mobile emitter time!!! and his first time off the ship.
"darkling": he starts editing his own program (and it doesn't go well).
"real life": he creates a holo-family for himself.
according to the stardate mentioned in "latent image" (see season five), the flashback part of that episode happens at the very end of season three.
season four: "i believe i've earned the respect of the crew as an equal."
"revulsion": we meet our first delta quadrant hologram (and it doesn't go well). this is the first time we hear about holograms being subjugated by "organics."
"message in a bottle": the doctor meets the EMH-2 and reveals that at some point he programmed himself a dick and had sex.
"living witness": we learn that the doctor has a backup module who seems to have the same emotions and self-awareness as the doctor himself (which i take to mean that whatever sentience is now in his program can be duplicated by copying).
season five: "we gave him a soul. do we have any right to take it away now?"
"latent image": we learn the doctor had a holo-breakdown (off-screen in late season 3) after his ethical subroutines could not reconcile his decision to save harry's life over another patient's. at the time, they determined that erasing some of his memories was the only way to repair him. at the end of the episode, after the doctor and seven both argue for his individual rights, janeway decides to let him work through his guilt rather than deleting his memories again. assuming this ultimately works after the episode ends, it means that he was able to overcome a critical programming conflict through introspection and social support instead of altering his programming.
season six: "haven't I earned the right to self-determination?"
"tinker, tenor, doctor, spy": the doctor formally complains that his sentience is not being acknowledged and argues that he should be allowed to grow his abilities beyond his role as doctor. he also wants his potential to be evaluated based on his holographic nature rather than humanoid limits ("my program can be expanded indefinitely. i don't have limits!").
"blink of an eye": he lives for three years on the time dilation planet and even has a son ("it's a long story").
"virtuoso": he tries to leave the ship to become an opera star, choosing his passion (and his ego) over his originally programmed purpose.
side note: "fair haven" and "spirit folk" are both in season six, and that's the first time that anyone (including the doctor) seems to consider the concept that regular holodeck characters might also have some kind of feelings, personhood, or right to continued existence (unlike in season three, when in "alter ego" it's both a joke and a problem that harry falls in love with a hologram, or in "real life" when the doctor is fine with b'elanna reprogramming his family without consulting them).
season seven: "the doctor exhibits many of the traits we associate with a person [...] but are these traits real, or is the doctor merely programmed to simulate them?"
"critical care": the doctor violates the hippocratic oath in his programming by harming a patient to save others, and it does not trigger the ethical subroutine breakdown he experienced in season 5.
"body and soul": delta quadrant holograms are in revolt. the doctor experiences humanoid pleasures and enjoys them.
"flesh and blood": he betrays voyager to save the hirogen-programmed holograms and (temporarily) leaves the ship to join them, "because i'm one of you."
"author, author": a federation arbiter decides that he's not legally a person, but is "no ordinary hologram" and has some limited rights.

Crazy fan-theory / AU: what if Rosie was the one who has Alastor on his leash?
Alright, hear me out on this theory about Alastor and Rosie in "Hazbin Hotel." So, in the show, it seems like Alastor just casually strolls into Rosie's territory, asks for help, and boom, she's down with it. But let's dive deeper.
Rosie mentioned, "And old Alastor has never done me wrong before," hinting at a history between them. What if they had a binding demonic deal going on? Like, Alastor brings souls to Rosie, boosting her power, and in return, she hooks him up somehow? Maybe it all started with them teaming up to hunt demons, with Alastor broadcasting screams on his Radio Station, and Rosie's crew feasts on the literal bodies like an all-you-can-eat-buffet clean up crew. But then, because of some vague or confusing wording that created a "backdoor" in the deal, it twisted in Rosie's favour.
Alastor and Rosie working together isn't an implausible scenario, since we know Vox approached Alastor to team up as well. Now, why did Alastor pick Rosie over Vox? Simple. He found Vox too brutish and preferred Rosie's refined persona. He also just didn't vibe with Vox's goals: Alastor doesn't respect Vox because Vox doesn't respect his professional medium. Vox wants influence using media in the way the media corporations of real-life owns and influences us. Alastor takes pride in his radio profession, sees it as an art form from simpler but more refined times. To him, it was an easy choice between Rosie and Vox.
So, when Alastor brings Charlie to Rosie, he's not doing anyone a favor. It's a win-win for Alastor. He wins if Charlie + Cannibals lose because Rosie will be weakened and its not like the Cannibals are his people, and he ALSO wins if Charlie wins because then the Princess of Hell is indebted to him. He didn't have such high stakes in the gamble at all.
He definitely miscalculated his own strength when he faced Adam, and regrets it. Alastor likely thought he could take on Adam as equals. The fight worked out well enough in the beginning, Alastor was able to easily dodge Adam in his childish rage, and severely underestimated the First Man. Alastor knew that Vox would be watching, if not broadcasting it, so it was also an opportunity for Alastor to show off his sheer power to the masses.
Alastor is ADAMANT to remind all of Hell he is back, and just as fearsome. During his song against Vox: "♪ Let's begin... I'm gonna make you wish that I stayed gone. Tune on in... When I'm done, your status quo will know its race is run, Oh, this will be fun! ♪".
But his plan backfired BAD, and it made Rosie stronger because her people got to reap the rewards of the battle. EVEN WORSE, Alastor was wounded and nearly died.
"Great Alastor Altruist died for his friends?"
If he HAD died, the citizens of Hell would've thought he died for his friends since he, a powerful and feared overlord, has lived at this Hotel that supported the ridiculous notion of betterment and redemption. Completely against his personal brand. Word has surely spread of his return, especially news regarding his questionable choice of residence. In his breakdown song, it wasn't Alastor having an internal conflict between "omg I can't believe I nearly died for my friends??? These people?????? what the fk??" but more "i fked up, and this makes MORE people think i'm soft and weak, sacrificing myself for OTHERS".
So Alastor went back, because Charlie's team had won, as Plan B. Even if Alastor lost is fight against Adam, who could blame him? Charlie trusts him more now, and owes him BIG TIME. Not only because Alastor reached out to his 'friend' to help her, but he also nearly died fighting the biggest and most powerful person from the enemy team. With Charlie owing him big time now and their binding deal in play, Alastor's favor can be way more significant.
As for Alastor's initial interest in the hotel, it's likely he saw it as a chance to cozy up to the Princess of Hell and maybe gain some leverage to get out of his deal somehow.
I still can't rationalize the coincidence of Alastor and Lilith disappearing at the same time, so I'm going to ignore that for now.

the sincere kindness and gentleness of this update notwithstanding, i do think you can see some undertones to this letter. as in, i think some of the messages jonathan apparently asked sister agatha to include make a lot more sense if you take them as his self-conscious attempts at proving he was returning to mental stability. like, if i woke up in a hospital in a foreign country and found out that i was brought there after collapsing dramatically in a public place and subsequently spent weeks raving incoherently about things that actually did happen, things i would never be able to prove really happened... well, i would probably be extremely careful to present myself as a generally stable person who had a one-time mental breakdown that i’m now recovering from quickly, right? so that i could go home as soon as possible without further questions being asked, questions that i would not be able to answer believably under the circumstances.
to be clear, i do think that jonathan “ultimate wifeguy” harker would jump on the opportunity to talk about how great mina is to a captive audience regardless. i do think its very in-character for him to be anxious about letting his boss/mentor down regardless. i do think he would be winning the hearts of all the nurses with his puppy dog charm regardless. i do think he would want to donate to a charity hospital regardless.
but there’s still something about the details he emphasized in the letter. I have a good job, a respectable job, and I’m already eager to return to it. I hope this doesn’t tarnish my established track record of professional responsibility! Did I mention my beautiful fiancee, Mina, who is “shortly to be [my] wife?” Also I’m back to thinking about finances and social responsibility, so when you write to her on my behalf can you make sure to ask about paying my hospital bill in advance?
like, i’m not sure if jonathan is doing this consciously or not! but i do think one plausible interpretation of his state of mind in this letter is that he’s doing everything he can to demonstrate that he’s a respectable, responsible man with legitimate, stable social ties. he’s performing membership in society, basically. so that he can go home and so that any previously professed belief in monsters/demons/vampires will be solidly chalked up to delirium.

real talk everyone: i know that for many of us, engaging with the characters of Our Flag Means Death through the lens of mental illness/neurodivergence allows us to explore not only ourselves (seeing the self in the other aka the fictional character) but also explore how characters we love can be like us, but especially for white fans, we need to talk about the appropriate ways to do this with characters of color, especially Edward 'Blackbeard' Teach.
there is NOTHING WRONG with interpreting Ed as a neurodivergent character. That is NOT what this post is about.
What it is about is the way that fans, particularly white fans, have been approaching their discussions of Ed and potential neurodivergence in a way that infantilizes and lessens him as a character by virtue of missing what he DOES in favor of listening to how other (white) characters talk ABOUT him
See, there's this underlying idea that something is "wrong" with Ed. That he's unstable, that he's half-insane, that he's a shadow of himself who needs Izzy or Stede to manage him, that he needs to be fixed, that he's always on the verge of a breakdown - and I understand that these ideas are coming from a sympathetic and loving place, but they are 1) not accurate to what we see in the show and 2) really infantilizing to Ed as a grown man of color
so firstly, the elephant in the room:
Izzy is the character who spends the most time questioning Ed's sanity and stability and we have to understand that Izzy is incorrect. Izzy is basing his judgements on the fact that Ed's behavior does not make sense within Izzy's worldview, not within the actual realms of reality.
What we see with Edward is a person who is performing at the highest peak of his professional field, with the respect of essentially all of his peers and enemies, with nowhere else to climb, and he is bored. We see that he has unfulfilled emotional needs in terms of wanting companionship, tenderness, and trusting relationships with others. We see that he finds his work an endless, boring grind without life or passion, and that the natural conclusion to that profession is death in the line or duty or in capture by the enemy.
In this context, Ed's passive suicidal ideation makes perfect sense. His lack of interest in continuing his work makes perfect sense. He is not inexplicable, he is essentially a case study in what happens when a person is severely socially isolated and married to their unfulfilling job that they hate. Ed's a bit of an adrenaline junkie and all the adrenaline has gone out of his work. He is seeking novelty and interest to respark his old passions.
This is deemed evidence of Ed being "half-insane" by Izzy because it fundamentally opposes Izzy's own needs and worldview, and thus seems inexplicably incorrect. Izzy enjoys the fact that they don't have to fight, that the surrenders are easy, that the looting takes little effort. To him, these are all signs of their great success, which makes Ed's boredom a "mood" that he has to manage rather than a clash of needs and expectations.
Ed wants to meet a new person who's different and unusual. This, to him, is a worthwhile pursuit, because piracy is boring and he's already successful at it. To Izzy, it's a nonsensical waste of time.
Ed is not actually unstable for feeling this way. He's just not having his intellectual and emotional needs met by his environment, so he's checking out of the things that bore and depress him. Thinking otherwise is generally just a failure to contextualize his attitude - if you think of Ed as a successful business owner with no challenges in his field, you'd see that he's essentially repeating the same boring day in the office over and over, with no way out.
After all, retirement for a pirate is death. And Ed doesn't even have the language to describe retirement until he meets Stede. So he just knows he wants things to change, or end, and death is the only end he can know to anticipate at this point in his life.
Ed also demonstrates that despite his boredom and depression, he's perfectly capable of managing his day to day life. In Episode Four he makes astute observations of the world around him (correctly gauging the conditions of the clouds and the sea to determine when fog will occur), properly estimates when the Spanish should be closing in on their location, accurately assess a means of keeping track of time for his endeavor, and works with a partner to develop a back up plan. All while managing the emotions of his second in command, who's flipping out and navigating meeting a new person he's fascinated by.
If Ed were half as unstable as some posts postulate (or as Izzy assumes), then he wouldn't be capable of all of this. Again, Izzy thinks that Ed is insane because he's not in on Ed's inner workings. He doesn't know that Ed has a plan, he doesn't understand that Ed wants to explore a different life (because Izzy can't imagine a life outside of piracy), and he doesn't understand why Ed sees anything of value in Stede. Ergo, he thinks Ed must be losing it.
But again, the story shows that Ed isn't losing it at all, he's just having fun. He doesn't need to be managed, he's managing himself just fine. He's just not managing himself in a way that his coworkers are expecting.
Assuming otherwise is to disregard that he's clearly still highly cognizant of the world around him and fully capable of interacting and engaging with it.
The bathtub scene is another area I've seen people bring up to support this, and I'll be frank, it baffles me. The bathtub scene is not written as though this is a common occurrence in the life of Edward Teach. it's framed as a PTSD flashback brought on by the trigger of the Kraken and the stress of Ed feeling as though he needs to commit his second ever murder, of a man he doesn't even want to kill. The breakdown isn't a regular occurrence, its a lowering of walls after a frightening reminder of what Ed clearly sees as his greatest sin - murdering his own father.
It's just. I don't know man, that's not his every day. We learn that Ed takes precautions to ensure he doesn't have to kill, and that he's avoided that all these years. This breakdown is essentially because he's revisiting that trauma again in a way that directly opposes the conditions of his original traumatizing incident. Where Ed murdered his father to defend himself and his mother from a terrifying aggressor, here he would be killing his friend who he has already started falling for and who treats him kindly for nothing more than selfish personal benefit (and peer pressure).
These are not every day circumstances in the life of Edward Teach.
And finally, his breakdown at the end of the series - Blanket Fort Ed is literally just going through the motions of a break up. He's crying in the club (blanket fort) of comfort, wearing his exes clothes because they're more comfortable than his, eating tons of marmalade, and writing bad, sad poetry. This is literally just Been Unexpectedly Dumped 101. That gets turned up to 11 though after Izzy confronts him and he hears the sound of the crew calling for him. Izzy has put Ed in a mindset where he must again hold doubt and mistrust for the people around him in his heart (thus interpreting the crews calls for Eddie to sing them a song as mockery) while at the same time making it clear that he's worthless as an individual.
It's a direct attack on his self-esteem, and his newfound sense of having a solid foundation gets ripped from under his feet. He goes on the offense, but now, back in a world that doesn't satisfy his emotional or psychological needs, and having been made aware that it IS possible to have those needs met, but that HE, Edward Teach, simply isn't allowed to have them met, he's now in despair.
But despite all of this! He's still not incapable of taking care of himself OR in need of a caretaker. We see that he's still taking care of business, that he's still active on the crew and directing change, and that he's capable of planning and executing courses of action.
At no point in the series is Ed in need of a manager. Yes, in some ways, he directs Izzy to act as his hands (especially early on), but that's more because Izzy's job is to be his hands than because Ed needs someone to take care of things for him. He's delegating the boring work he doesn't want to do to his assistant.
There is a tendency in general to assume that people of color are less capable, less rational, less intelligent than white people. I doubt anyone is thinking of this intentionally when they suggest that Ed relies on Izzy for his day to day care, but that's kind of what's implied when it's implied that Ed can't handle his daily affairs without any evidence that he's actually incapable. The assumption that Ed is being corrupted by Stede or led astray or can't determine for himself what's best are actually examples of Izzy infantilizing Ed too. Stede gets in on that in Episode 9 as well, when he agrees that he's ruining Ed instead of acknowledging that Ed is a grown man capable of making his own choices.
Both of the main white men in Ed's life think him incapable of making choices for himself. The difference is that Stede does it in a moment of trauma, and Izzy kinda does it because he doesn't understand that other people can have different worldviews without there being a definitive right and wrong answer. There's a racial element to it that's absolutely intentional on behalf of the writing team, but that I don't think is getting picked up by all of the fanbase.
Edward Teach is the man, the myth, the legend. When we talk about him, we have to consider his behavior from the perspective of the man, himself, not the myth or the legend as interpreted by the characters around him. When we write about Ed's mental health and psychological state, we need to make sure that we're centering Ed's own behavior and reasoning and considering what actions he's taking on screen, not the way he's interpreted by the people around him.

Hi ! First thing i love your reflections about richonne and the way you detail everything.
That's why i want to ask you this : In your opinion, when did Rick / Michonne fell deeply in love with each other ? I think maybe in between season 3 - 4 for Michonne and for Rick during Carl's eye recovery. Of course we know they got a strong connection since the begining.
Thanks !!!
Hi! Thank you so much. 😊 I LOVE this question cuz I think about when exactly they fell in love often and I always enjoy hearing others takes on when they believe those moments were. (And since it's such a good question I of course had to give an extended response with supporting evidence😅)
Imo, Rick & Michonne both fall deeply in love with each other by the end of Season 4.
Like their attraction and feelings were stirring from S3 forward, but at the end of S4, I think that feeling of “I’m in love with this person" starts becoming even more evident.
For Rick, I say it's that precious moment on the train tracks with Michonne and Carl when his heart knows deep down that he doesn't just like and need her but he deeply loves and has fallen for her.

And Michonne is not far behind as I think she has that same deep-down feeling in the next episode, when she listens to Rick outside the car while Carl sleeps in her lap and the “Cuz I’m Okay Too” scene. I feel like this is when her heart becomes more aware that she deeply loves him and has fallen for him. Their minds just needed time to catch up & allow them to act on what their hearts felt in S4.
Tumblr media
To me, it’s all so clear in their looks during these scenes. Because the way she looks at him in that 4x16 scene and how he looks at her on those tracks in 4x15 feels very reminiscent of how they look at each other on that couch in 6x10 when they both know full well they’re in love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really feel like the only few reasons it takes R&M so long to act on those S4 feelings is because one; the world kept screaming at them throughout S5/6A and they had to focus so much on just bare-bones survival and recovering from PTSD, two; Michonne needed that convo with Carl and Judith in 6x10 to feel comfortable letting her heart take the wheel and take that next step with Rick. And Rick just needed that confirmation that the feeling was mutual because I think he really respected and valued her role in his and his family’s life and didn’t want to potentially jeopardize that by professing his feelings for her unless he knew it was something she wanted too. (and three; as fione as Rick is, I low-key feel like Rick initially didn’t think he could pull a baddie like Michonne and in his troubled S5B/6A state he thought he’d have to settle elsewhere. ijs. 💁🏽‍♀️😋)
But fortunately, Rick and Michonne both realized how perfect they were for each other and acted on it once they finally had time to heal and breathe a little.
S4 Richonne will always be so special to me and it’s especially because I think it’s the season they fall deeply for each other and slowly but surely become aware of it. Rick and Michonne both really value family and in 4B they saw each other be the exact type of family the other needed. But not just needed, they saw each other be someone they genuinely love and desire.
I’d been thinking about doing mini breakdowns of my perspective on all the different eras of Richonne because I feel each season, from S3 to S9, brings about a new layer & era to their relationship and this question has me even more motivated to try and explore that because every era is just so good. So thank you, anon!

I would love to write a post comparing Jonathan and Renfield to at least theorize about why their "raving" about vampires is treated so differently.
But I run into the roadblock of knowing so little about Renfield outside of his illness.
Is it that Jonathan is an educated middle class man in a respectable profession? Maybe, but we don't know what Renfield was doing before the asylum. He is in a private asylum so class based reasons may not hold water.
Is it that Jonathan has a wife who can come and bring him home? Perhaps. We never hear about anyone coming to visit Renfield.
Most likely it is that Jonathan had all the physical signs of having suffered something, which gives a reason for an acute breakdown. The nuns don't necessarily have to believe his story to believe that he suffered trauma.
Ultimately it is frustrating because they have the potential to be foils. But the lack of information on Seward's favorite patient is so limiting.

This has been a breakdown of my activities or the past few years. TW for cancer and death
In 2019, I had moved into our first apartment since moving to Massachusetts. I acquired an iPad and it's been a quality of life improvement for me as an artist and as someone who enjoys watching videos while I clean.
My grandfather died. It might have been the same day I was given the apartment tour. It was a Saturday. He couldn’t remember who was missing.
I got a pay bump in November from our pharmacy changing over after the buyout.
Covid was on the radar. My paternal grandmother passed away. The year before she passed, she would drive me home from work and tell me the same stories about shops that her and her brother would visit after school. She stopped being able to recognize the stores she told me about every week. She drove me far out of town one day and I couldn't stop her; she insisted there was a McDonalds nearby and wanted to take me there.
My parents inherited a home, the hub of family gatherings, that had more problems than they could afford to fix. My childhood is on the market.
In 2020. Pharmacy work was more leisurely than it had ever been in my cumulative 3.5 years of being in the field. We had time to work on the clinical side of patient care. It felt like a respectable healthcare profession and not an assembly line. I spent hundreds of hours playing duolingo to learn Spanish. Es lo que es.
My brother had cancer. A few months later, now my mother has it. She’s been fighting stage 4 for two years. It was probably caught too late. She had handled the signs like she does with everything else: ignore it and tolerate it until it boils over.
I don't understand how I feel about it. She went out of her way to make everyone miserable even before now. I used to want something to happen to her that would make her more compassionate, reasonable, understanding. Facing her mortality has not changed her.
(My brother is ok now)
In 2021, I took an immunization training class. I’m licensed to administer covid and flu vaccines. I’ve given what feels like a few thousand vaccines at the time I'm writing this. I had surgery in October. The six paid weeks I had off was the first vacation I had since starting the job. Recalling the amount of free time, organizing, and drawing I did makes me long for another one. Perhaps I’ll have another one! (I do use my PTO now)
However, the cost of transportation between my apartment and Boston for follow up care has set me back. I had to use credit. I’m still fighting to break even between interest and minimum payment.
(But thanks to my diligence, my credit score is good and I’m working on a way out. In spite of financial hardship, I do not regret it.)
In 2022 I've been dxed by another psych with Bipolar 2, so we have 3 strikes for ASD and 2 for Bipolar 2. I begged my psych not to put me on SSRIs and SNRIs because I had finally gotten over the severe anhedonia that 3 of those gave me.
Live Laugh Lamotrigine.
I've made friends with the maintenance guy and his mother who lives on-site. He's also an antique fanatic who dresses in late Victorian-Edwardian fashion 24/7. We go antique shopping every so often.
He has unsettling and intense eye contact. Oh god.
Work is out of control again. I can't wait until everyone has had their boosters. I'm so grateful for them but they're making the normal duties of my job a nightmare difficulty. ;-; I'm not getting paid extra to give vaccines and maintain the license. I will see if my displeasure for retail pharmacy is strong enough to make me go to school.
We got a new kitten. We just fixed him.
He is driving me crazy. H e l p

Teachers are fed up with the war on “woke” classrooms
New polling shows teachers aren’t happy with classroom culture wars. Conservative grandstanding surrounding racial justice and gender identity has been particularly vitriolic. The Pew Research Center has released results from comprehensive studies that build a damning picture of how the right-wing attacks have played out as well as community members’ opinions on whether or not the resulting political decisions have been appropriate. Related: Teacher’s viral TikTok shows just how much work it takes to comply with state’s new book law The law requires teachers to catalogue thousands of books so that parents can challenge them. The results come from multiple polls conducted over the past few months that surveyed teachers, parents, and students to get a more well-rounded profile of the nonstop attacks on the schoolroom. Never Miss a Beat Subscribe to our daily newsletter to stay ahead of the latest LGBTQ+ political news and insights. Almost half of educators (41%) say the ongoing culture wars have negatively impacted their job satisfaction. Educators have been fleeing the profession recently as job satisfaction levels have plummeted. The proportion of college graduates entering the profession has dropped to a 50-year low. Whether they are being targeted by conservative activists, hurt or killed in a school shooting, or tired of dealing with constant understaffing and low funding, more and more American teachers are dropping out. Approximately 71% of teachers say they don’t have enough influence over what is taught in their classrooms, and racial justice and gender identity are two of the topics they are most frustrated over. Over half, 58%, say that state government now has too much influence over class curriculum after rightwing takeovers of school boards and state education departments. The surveys also asked elementary, middle, and high school teachers about the students at their respective grade levels. About 64% said that students should be taught that the legacy of slavery still affects the position of Black people in American society. Only 8% said it shouldn’t be taught at all. Majorities of teachers at all grade levels supported the inclusion of this fact into classroom lessons. But when it comes to gender identity, the results were different. Half of teachers believe that students shouldn’t be taught about “whether a person’s gender can be different from or is determined by their sex assigned at birth.” While 62% of elementary teachers thought it shouldn’t be taught, only 45% of middle school teachers, and 35% of or high school instructors felt the same way. A third of teachers supported teaching that gender identity is different than the sex assigned at birth, but 14% said that students should be taught that one’s sex assigned at birth cannot differ from their gender identity. About 60% of teachers said that parents should not be able to opt-out their children from lessons that concern racial justice, but only a third of teachers said that lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity should be mandatory. Nearly 48% of teachers said that parents should have the right to opt-out of LGBTQ+ lessons. While elementary teachers supported allowing parents to opt their children out of LGBTQ+-inclusive lessons. Teachers who identify as Republicans were the most likely to oppose any teaching about gender identity in schools. The political breakdown also showed a much higher support for racial justice by Democrat instructors. Unsurprisingly, 80% of Republican teachers say parents should be able to opt their children out of learning about LGBTQ+ issues, compared with 30% of Democratic teachers.  However, a majority of teachers said that such lessons aren’t really an issue to begin with, since 68% of teachers reported that issues surrounding sexual orientation or gender identity “rarely or never” came up in the classroom. http://dlvr.it/T3JBJ9

I have been far too understanding and forgiving in my life. It has been misconstrued as weakness and stupidity. This cycle has ended. I do not need to forgive or understand I need to be treated fairly and with respect.
Yes, “You have won” and “Yes you beat me” and yes ultimately it will be your undoing but not by me.
Yes in the end it will cost you as much as you cost me. I may or may not be involved because it’s all about you, not me. I turned this nightmare over to the universe and I will not be vindictive or hateful other then how I distribute my truth.
Yes, you could have done things better and so could I but we didn’t.bItvbecame painfully obvious that this had been a forgone conclusion and that you weren't veering from your planned route in any meaningful way. You will think whatever but I know that I did a lot for you and always assumed the best and you did the opposite. I ignored my intuition when you did those little things early on that showed that I was temporary and that you were hiding many things. You should have never involved other MC's and you should have never made any of those false accusations. You shouldn't have been so greedy either.
Yes, you made a decision that harmed me and no I have never made a decision to hurt you. In fact until today I’ve never made a decision to hurt anybody but I have hurt you and others. The difference is the same as the difference between the term “act” and “react” this in fact is how I must react so that you and others will no longer do such “acts” upon me. Losers thinking they will “win” or “beat me” without even conveying that we were competing or fighting or at war.
I would have patience and understanding for those that caused me harm. Thanks to you I know now that was wasted effort. You used me, and Now you will lose me and I will use you and everyone like you to keep myself from feeling the pain of this engineered nightmare of yours and yes I did so what you asked and it was a lot more going on with me than your hyper focused accusations. My boss and coworkers, friends and family saw me having severe mental health breakdown but not my wife. My wife saw an easy path to my destruction and went after it.
You are the platform from which I will rise and you will be left where ever it is that you think is so great that it is worth what you pulled. I know you never tell anyone about that years that I supported you, ask nothing of you and cared about and for you. You don't talk about how I didn't ride with my club so that I could be with you because you wanted me to. I know you never speak of how I went directly against anyone that said anything bad about you and how I stayed by your side no matter what. You never talk about how when you were saying I was a narcissist and a drug addict that I was seeing a psychiatrist and a therapist and asked them about narcissistic possibility and had give them full disclosure on drugs and they called you an emotional rapist.
Your love will be used by your "new friends and family to wipe their feet. Your love will carry my importance higher than what you showed me mine was worth to you at my defeat.
You have brought this to me as a gift of pain and suffering. I thank you for this gift as it has given me the ability to share with others what they deserve from me. The guy that was feeding you false information about me and went after my cut, money and happiness lost his gf and all his friends because of his lies and womanizing. He wants me to believe that you slept with him, I don't even care at this point you did whatever you did and you had no respect or consideration for anyone involved.
My happiness is not up for anyone to take or claim for themselvles. I will profess that I know about love, marriage or relationships and I'll leave those lies for you. I will use your expertise in lies in the my quest to be free of all negative ties and will ignore you putting all those strangers between us and all the dirtbags you brought into connection which further ruined my professional reputation. I remember everything that you did along are path that made me question you or question the persona that you portrayed. Either way you're not even decent towards me and your false narrative shows me your vindictiveness and I got how ruthless and uncaring that you can be and if that's who you like being with your promiscuity and arrogance have at it because I'd rather be alone en than be subjected to all this drama and deceit,

Accounting cheat sheet¶ · Assets represent the company's wealth, things it owns. · Liabilities are obligations from past events that the company will have to pay. 9 At first glance, accounting can seem a difficult field to navigate. In simple terms, to debit means to reduce or deduct. To go on credit, on the other hand, means to exceed your available finances. Credit Cards allow us to purchase items or cover expenses for which we may not necessarily have the requisite funds. Often, we also must make interest payments depending on how much of our limit we have used up. Modern accounting grows from the principle of debits and credits and applies them to items such as Assets, Liabilities, and Equity. These three in particular make up the basic accounting equation. The basic accounting equation asserts that your Assets must always equal your Liabilities and Equity. This has enormous implications for accounting practice. Now, this is where things start getting more exciting. We already covered the meanings of Assets, Liabilities, and Equity. There are two more accounting items affected by the debits and credits system: Revenue and Expenses. Revenue is the money or cashflow we generate from selling a particular product or service. For example, revenue incoming from our product sales via our shop or online. So, every time it increases, we credit it and every time it decreases, we debit it. Expenses can be the costs of creating the product we are selling known as cost of goods sold , or the general costs of running our business. For example, utility bills or even the cost of fuel for our transport vehicles. A third type of expense is Depreciation and Amortization, which are costs a company incurs from the obsolescence and inadequacy of its fixed assets. There is an important difference in the way these accounts are recorded. Revenues and Expenses are items of the Income Statement. Both of these financial statements are governed by the double-entry principle, however. The double entry concept is visible in the accounting equation itself. The assets of your business must equal what your business owes and owns i. Of course, advanced software such as Sage no longer requires us to maintain physical journals. The General Ledger account is the name of the container where we store information about Balance Sheet and Income Statement items. Usually, a General Ledger has Subsidiary Ledgers , which contain the respective details of the account. For instance, an accounts receivable General Ledger will have Subsidiary Ledgers that contain information about the amount that each customer owes. A General Ledger for Inventory will contain Subsidiary Ledgers that will show the breakdown between raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods. Debit items always fall on the left and Credit items on the right side of a T-Account. This is because with their interest payment the Asset bank balance falls in quantity. At the same time, they will have to debit the creditors account, since they are eliminating a Liability. This preserves the balance in the Accounting Equation: Assets decrease and so do Liabilities, but Equity remains the same. The Accounting world has grown so much from being a basic bookkeeping profession to a more dynamic and exciting area. Knowledge of basic concepts enables you to quickly start auctioning the insights of your journal entries to inform decisions within the business. Moreover, accountants utilize the backbone of the system debits and credits to add value to the world of financial services via a set of functions known as financial accounting.
