Okay wasn’t expecting to wake up from my nap to a Sonic and Shadow Tails Tube but I’m not complaining! Suppose it only makes sense with the run up to SxS Gens and the movie, haha.

I’m sometimes less of a fan of how they’re depicted in more modern stuff, and a little of that shines through here, BUT, this is actually really well done in my opinion! I mean just having an episode for only them (and Tails, of course) is great on its own, but I love how even with bickering they weren’t unreasonable with it? Like it didn’t feel contrived like it does sometimes, and they actually made sure to mention some of the times they’ve helped and cared about each other. And all of it was just so fun to watch, it’s a really entertaining dynamic! Love them so much, can’t wait to see more of them this year!

However, seeing acknowledgment of Prime again meaning they very likely really meant it was canon gives me real mixed signals. On the positive side it means all of the stuff that happened between Sonic and Shadow there is canon (which would be incredible to me, that show did so much for them) and so are my favs like Nine and Dread, but it also means we just have to accept Sonic had a short time where he was just wildly out of character? And nobody in universe cared? New headcanon that he didn’t take his Adderall, or something, I don’t know. Guess I’ll just have to get over it haha.

(Also nice to see Sonic call Shadow a faker, it’s generally been flipped in fandom portrayals of them I see (which I can still get behind tbf!), but it was always Sonic who gave out that nickname, not Shadow, so cool to see them use it.)

P3M MAKOTO YUKI MISCONCEPTIONS

To be honest, it kind of annoys me when people watch the persona 3 movies and come away with it with the wrong idea of what Makotos character is in them. I don't mean the people who don't like the movies or their portrayal of him. It's fine if you don't, btw. Media is subjective, and different people will take away different things from the same thing, but I feel like some people end up completely missing the mark and mischaractizing that version of him.

For all the odd choices the p3 movies make, I'm adamant that his character and his arc is the best part about them, so it kind of urks me when i see tharpeople take away from it is that 'he's emotionless and devoid of personality' or 'a complete asshole who doesn't care about anything' both of which is untrue in all the films.

First of all, the whole him being 'rude and uncaring' thing; To be honest, nothing he says strikes me as rude, it all comes off as blunt and not fitting the situation (him asking if they can leave during the hospital scene, and his answer seemingly having no sympathy when they talk to Natsuki). Of course to those who don't know him that well, he comes off as cold especially since his facial expression or tone barely change.

And the uncaring bit continues to get debunked through every film. Even in the first film, where he's closed himself off and doesn't care about living. He awakens to his persona to protect Yukari, he helps Fuuka collect her stuff twice despite not knowing her and even listens to her talk about Natsuki, he summons a different persona and throws himself at the Priestess to save Junpei. He goes against what he was told to do and goes straight into Tartarus because of the fear that his team will die if he doesn't.

It's made clear in the first movie that despite avoiding connections with people, he still can't let people die, deep down he cares about those around him getting hurt and wants to prevent that. It seems to heavily be rooted by his PTSD of the accident, him getting flashbacks to it in both the second and third full moon at the thought of someone dying. He's willing to throw himself in danger, not giving up even if he gets hurt or could exhaust himself, he has no care about his life, but he still cares about those around him.

The only claim I could see holding weight is the 'no personality' part but that's mainly because he spends half of the first film following orders from other people, but that itself can be seen as part of him, he doesn't have any direction or any care about his life so he follows what everyone tells and wants from him. He fights because he was told hed make a great asset to the team, he stays behind because him going would make Yukari mad, he has no reason not to listen or any argument to refute it, and this is dismantled near the end where he refuses to listen when they tell him to run because he can't let anyone die.

This is all I've gathered from the first movie still, I could carry on for all of them (and there is alot to talk about in each one in regards to his character) but I think I've made my point. Not only does they continue to prove those points incorrect, his character continues to evolve with the events around him.

I don't think there's a right or wrong way to write or portray makoto. The movies are not the be- all-all-end all of his characterization, but when you're talking about or writing that specific version of him, just don't end up writing him in a way that completely contradicts what the film shows.

Hi, what are your favorite IH romance tropes that they've got in canon?

hiya! at the risk of sounding like a bit of a wet blanket, i'm not too into assigning tropes to stories or couples or relationships bc it sometimes feels a bit reductive and limiting i guess?

that said, i can list some stuff about the IH relationship portrayal that i'm drawn to and enjoy:

i like how they have a shared theme of losing a parental figure at an early age. and even more specifically, blaming the having that figure return as a hollow to challenge their guilt and grief. these events set them on their own independent stories that allow them to be highly empathetic and understanding of one another's circumstances.

what's more, i think these events also help to shape the shared importance and concept of "family" that ichigo and orihime both have in common.

i love how protective they are of one another, and while this is simply part of their inherent nature as characters and they will extend this protection to others they care about, both ichigo and orihime consistently single one another out as someone they must singularly protect.

i love the progression of their relationship from strangers, to acquaintances, to friend of a friend, to friends, to trusted ally, to lovers! i think the progression of their relationship is very natural and realistic.

i like how their relationship also deals with a very real issue of communication, feelings of inadequacy, and the desperation of wanting to protect someone all on your own-- both ichigo and orihime learn that their way of going about things is not viable in the long term and both grow independently of one another AND together. i love their miscommunication and conflict in the HM arc, the question of "can they trust each other" being challenged by the villains and each time they come back with a stronger resolve and answer "yes. we may not fully understand each other because we're all fundamentally different people, but we have a bond that cannot be broken. so of course i trust you"

the portrayal of the feelings they have for one another is so uniquely tender and honest within the genre. ichihime is truly in its own league compared to other shounen couples!

i like how they share the same interests and banter with each other; that they can hold conversations as friends and still be romantic as well. its really important to me when it comes to the believability of a romance-- i need to believe they can be each others friend too!

i love how well their fighting styles complement each other in battle! they truly are like a sword and shield

dennis is an angry character btw im sorry but he is full of rage but that rage is not exclusive his anger does not negate sadness and fragility and insecurities in fact they work together and dtamhd was one of the first times where his anger was not used as a joke via a surface level rage explosion from him but instead explored the fragility of his anger. the way he keeps reassuring the workers he encounters (and himself) that he's not mad. when he tells daisy he's not mad but he is a little bit upset. dennis is angry and that anger is what makes him so fragile. he was upset and it manifested as rage bc he doesnt know what to do with his own sadness

My Good Omens fanfictions are kicking off. Or, should I say, Lady Crowley is. In one of the stories, she was supposed to end up with Hastur. No, she decided she wants to be with Michael.

I guess, I'll need to come up with a seperate F!Crowley x Hastur storyline, because I'm not letting go of that ship.

I must say... In one story she's with Satan, in the other she'll be with Michael... Lady Crowley, honey, you keep pulling the Olympians. Good for you.

P.S. - I don't know how accurately to Good Omens I'll portray Michael, since I haven't seen season 2, and it doesn't matter. I have a very particular way I like to see the figure. Honestly, if she isn't the General, and the leader of angels in Good Omens, it's a crime. Because, if she is, why haven't I seen her in armour/uniform in any of the screencaps?.. Either way, her version I intend to paint is amazing.

I thought that it was stupid that Brandon Sanderson had the narrator of Tress of the Emerald Sea call all the unnamed sailors "Dougs" when he could have just called them, you know, sailors. But then I started using the term. Turns out having a word for "yes, we know that realistically all these individuals have unique identities and personalities, but they're not the focus of this story so we're going to treat them as faceless background characters" is surprisingly useful.

One of my favorite things about the worldbuilding in The Left Hand of Darkness is the "perverts" in Gethenian society—those who are permanently in one of the kemmer forms. The "normal" person on Gethen goes through a kemmer cycle with periods of somer, but that's not every Gethenian. People whose bodies don't work this way get treated with repulsion. Genly compares them to "homosexuals" in his society, and that comparison is really instructive. Gethenians may not have gender roles and identities the way we do, but they do have societal norms, including about bodies and sexuality. And those norms leave people out. They are imperfect and sometimes they are unfair. I think this is part of the point.

In subtle ways, this theme is woven throughout the book's descriptions of Gethenian cultures. To stick to sexuality, something similar can be said about the different norms surrounding incest on Gethen and the empathic treatment of Estraven's past relationship with Arek. There is no taboo about incest between siblings on Gethen, only on siblings vowing kemmering, but if a child is born of it, the parents have to separate (and it seems like Estraven is separated from Sorve because of this). The reason for including this element, in my reading, isn't to impose our own moral standards by "showing" that Estraven's relationship with Arek was "bad" (in fact, we learn fairly little about it, beyond that Estraven cared deeply for him.) Instead, I think it's partly to demonstrate the dissonance between Gethenian mores and our own, and unsettle both. Because, like Genly, we see Gethenian norms as strange, we can notice that they bring about particular situations and cause particular hurts. Even the custom of vowing kemmering monogamously for life, which sounds more familiar, is shown as double-edged. Estraven breaks a taboo by making his "false" vow to Ashe, but was trying to build a new life with Ashe really wrong?

These things are not 1:1 to any "real life" issue, but like everything else in this story, I think they're chosen because they are provocative. It's really meaningful to me that even in terms of gender and sexuality, Gethen isn't painted as a utopia, but as a real place. Le Guin shows us two sets of norms and asks us not just "are our norms arbitrary and/or constructed rather than essential truths?" but also "are norms always socially constructed? Should we question them sometimes? What harm is done to maintain them? Who is being left out?"

considering what you have spoken about regarding selina do you also get frustrated with like…i cant quite explain it but sometimes especially in more recent years shes been posed or positioned like some sort of damsel that needs a big strong man to save her and like im not saying she should be portrayed with the “hollywood level feminism” for lack of a better term im just think about how old versions of selina would have hated that. like im just thinking of anytime in the reeves movie where bruce grabs her or forces her mouth shut or even when he didnt allow her to kill falcone and im just thinking she should claw the fuck out of him for that. i just miss a version of selina who wouldnt allow anyone to walk all over her personal autonomy like that

oh absolutely! in fact this is specifically why i can't stand loeb's take on her character lol (and as we both know that was a significant point of reference for the reeves film). it's really jarring to transition from her volume one and two canon to the long halloween / dark victory / when in rome. i think a lot of people tend to latch onto these books because tim sale's art is to die for and it's obv hard not to enjoy a good murder mystery. in that aspect they're still books i can enjoy in isolation. but i find it very difficult to enjoy them as a selina fan specifically because in every single one it's like she's looking for solace and security in a man and i'm not sure why. like what was so bad about her original backstory of having a deadbeat dad (whether you ascribe to the volume one or volume two version of him) and why did she need to go looking for her "real" father in carmine falcone. why did she need to seek out temporary boytoy relief in italy. why did she dream about being saved by bruce. none of it really has a reason other than to create a "lack" in her for the sake of it being there, because she'd never needed a man like that before in her post-crisis narrative. as you mentioned it was quite to the contrary and she was fiercely independent and protective of her own peace, esp from men. when she felt empty or without a connection or lifeline to someone real, it was mostly about people like maggie or holly or arizona. her people

what i think it ultimately comes down to are two things: the first thing is the diminishment of her post-crisis origins. after all, it's convenient to ignore how distrustful selina is of people, and of men with power at their leisure to abuse specifically, when her post-crisis origins are no longer relevant to her personal characterization. although selina's status as a sex worker is more prominent now, it was more or less completely swept under the rug for the bulk of volume two. loeb also refused to engage with it in any capacity. it only really resurfaced with the conclusion to volume two because it drew direct parallels to how we initially found her in volume one, and then brubaker expanded on it once again in his take on the character, which was notably juxtaposed against a pre-existing romance with bruce and brings me to the second thing. i've already waxed about this at length so this may very well be recap but i really don't think selina's lack of control over her personal autonomy can be divorced of the modern portrayal of the romance. when selina looking for security and understanding and comfort in bruce is what drives the romance forward there's not much room to maintain her original values and guarded demeanor, if not her outright defensiveness and hostility. a lot of people look at the extensive trauma selina has experienced and argue that she deserves to be in a relationship with someone who allows her to let those walls down. this isn't incorrect in theory. but it does repeatedly ignore who she is. it's kind of like the point i was making about bruce yesterday. exploring the inherently abusive nature of robin or of bruce's right to his children in light of that fact is interesting to do, but the actual execution has rarely managed to take into account who bruce actually is

for however nice it might be for selina to let her walls down romantically and look for solace in bruce—and i say this mostly for the sake of argument, personally i would argue against its necessity—it's realistically not something she's actually going to do. at least not as willfully as she's been portrayed to. realistically she's going to make it extremely hard, which if anything is precisely the appeal. i love it when selina gives bruce a hard time. i love that it's not supposed to be easy or maybe even a possibility for him to win her over bc there's so much about his own ideological stances that's flawed and in opposition to her own. she doesn't have to be any less unrelenting in her principles and worldview for that romance between them to be compelling bc at the end of the day the entire crux of it is that against all odds bruce cares. for however wrong he thinks she might be in a given moment or in her stance against the government, he knows who she is and how hard she's fought and what she's survived and it makes him sympathetic to her because she's real. she's a wonderful character through which to explore the logical limits of bruce's self-righteousness and categorization of crime, as well as a wonderful mirror to hold up to his face as he starts to ask himself whether what he's doing is really the only means of keeping the city safe. and the novelty of it all is that you don't have to sacrifice her character for any of that to be true. writers have simply deluded themselves into believing that they have to and that's why we are where we are today

6. What's something you have in common with this character?

Tsuruno: The way it doesn't come naturally to him to really make an effort to connect with with more than one person at a time to the detriment of his other relationships, no matter how he feels about the others or what his evaluation of his standing with them is. I struggle with that a lot...

Arakawa: Uhhhhh mommy issues <3 LMAO the scene with his mother in the dressing room had me Looking Away bro the depiction hit sooo close to home...

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

Tsuruno: I've really been enjoying the way Gaiden's introduced more people to Yamaguchi's work as an actor and how much fun everyone's been having with his other roles and incorporating stuff from them into their depictions of Tsuruno! I think Yamaguchi's super underrated (and unfortunately his talent doesn't fully come through as Tsuruno due to the motion capture being done by others), so it's been nice to see people come to appreciate him.

Arakawa: I feel like you kind of have to pay close attention to Arakawa and his journey to fully enjoy him as a character, so although he's not the most popular character out there, the stuff people do make for him is almost always on-point... delicious fucking food...

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

Tsuruno: Complete and Utter Dog Person... I need one of Yamaguchi's dogs to make a cameo soooooo bad...

Arakawa: He's a Kaomoji User to me... probably doesn't use them as much as when he first discovered them but everyone's super thrown off getting texts or emails from him for the first time because of the gap moe...

23. Favorite picture of this character?

Tsuruno: You don't really get the full effect from this framing but I felt like SUCH a Victorian gentleman seeing an ankle during this scene it's not even funny... there's definitely other Tsuruno moments I love, but I think I'll love them more once I get to them in my sunglasses-less mod playthrough!

Arakawa: Literally my favorite picture period I don't caaaaaaare this is one of the sexiest shots in the franchise AND THE GAME AIN'T EVEN OUT YET

also also it just made SENSE that Davy relied on her too much to be able to see her romantically. When he talks about how if she’d been more mindful of herself and less of him than he might have been able to see it but her perfectly maintained composure and her cheerful stability and her ability to put all of her own feelings aside to aid and counsel him—-there wasn’t any room for romance there. it’s not until the crack at the end, where her control starts breaking down and she starts crying that he suddenly realizes that she could actually need HIM and that makes him able to step in and tell her what she needs to hear.

#Dickens doesn’t understand Agnes 100% or know how to treat her perfectly fairly #she’s got some of that perfectly virtuous to the point of unreality aura about her bc of dickens portrayal #But also that plays into who she actually is!!!! #someone who will keep total control and will use gentleness and kindness and calm good sense as a bit of a defense mechanism I think #like I think that reads true to me #and so Davy’s not actually stupid for being kept at arm’s length for so long and allowing himself to be #because she didn’t 100% let him #and can’t until he pushes her to share the secret #that’s been weighing her down and it’s just that she loves him! #Like I just. Love her so much actually. Because she took her heartbreak and buried it so deep and said no one will ever know #and then Davy’s sensitivity and perception even in his stupidity is what can see past that. Can FEEL that. Thinking about this one weird c!ponk neg post i clowned on a long time ago with my friends and now that the dsmp is over i think i was too harsh on it for their characterization of c!ponk. Truly they were ahead of their time on that one

#the only real gripe i had was their assumptions abt the cc which were. yikes im not gonna lie #but that being said yeah there is something to be said about c!ponk's capacity for cruelty towards ppl who have wronged her #and her treatment of sam is warranted up to a point tbh #but then we get to the finale where she is just. needlessly cruel #its so fascinating and some would call it derailment but i genuinely believe this was a perfect portrayal of negative character development #her resentment and anger consumed her until she was not only fully willing to commit violence against sam but actively enjoying it #which is something sam NEVER did #you always get the sense that he is disgusted with himself and his justifications always felt like a defense mechanism #against the crushing guilt his actions cause him to feel #ponk is laughing and saying hes going to savor this hes DELIGHTING in sam's fear and suffering and i want to study them like a weird bug #c!ponk crit #c!ponk neg

#fave spotting #rosemary leach #disraeli: portrait of a romantic #disraeli #the power game #character actors #classic tv #atv #1978 #if i hadn't seen her name in the opening credits then i sincerely don't think I'd have recognised Rosemary in her first appearance in this #series (not pictured); she is introduced at the very end of the second episode‚ as Disraeli finally enters government #and she looks so severe and so.. idk! i was quite taken aback. plus that wig.. #she's very good tho‚ playing Victoria across a more than 20 year period #at first i thought the series had presented a rather dim version of Victoria‚ easily impressed by the flatteries Disraeli lays on #with a trowel‚ and more or less manipulated into supporting his policies. actually there's a little more nuance there (but nothing quite as #well developed as Granada's 1964 Victoria Regina; i feel like that spoiled me for Vic portrayals bc it's so courageously interrogational of #her character and personality and politics; then again this series is about Disraeli and Queenie is a small support so perhaps it's to be #expected). what was i saying? oh yeh‚ so Rosemary does suggest some depth where the script allows; the thawing towards Dizzy #and subsequent befriending‚ her command that he sit in her presence bc of his gout but despite protocol‚ her exceedingly low #opinion of Gladstone. it's Victoria as perhaps we know her in popular culture for the most part but with at least a little sparkle around #the edges and the kind of solid fleshing out a good actor can do with even a fairly broadly written part

man i do not feel like doing my final project for my animal literature class and the reason why makes me feel like a bad person

#so i took this class thinking it was going to be a mix of like animal symbolism and animal rights #as well as how people end up doing animal xenofiction which do or dont play on animal tropes and where they come from #which is interesting to me #but there was only that last thing in like the first thing we read and in some lecture related homework #and pretty much everything else is about whether or not this portrayal of an animal is cruelty for not putting it on the same level #as a person #and ngl a lot of the stuff just sounds like a reach to me like one was like #''omg this man doesnt REALLY care. he FAILS at his analysis of his cat that saw him naked bc he thinks abt what the cat thinks abt clothes #but he doesnt consider how it would LOGICALLY feel he only cares abt HIMSELF'' #and professor also kinda lowkey implied the college students were being derogatory in what we named the campus cat #(literally like a goofy food name bc apparently we dont respect it?) #anyways usually our finals are like ''pick anything we've discussed and narrow down into a thesis'' #but she wants us to ONLY have our papers be about animal cruelty and if like idk the lion king is ethical or not #and i was like ''eh i can do pokemon maybe bc that has interesting things to say about animal and human relations sometimes'' #but her response was like ''ok but how SHOULD we treat animals in that context tho. are they saying animals have to fight? thats weirdddd'' #''are they like saying the creator wants animals to beat each other up are they saying animals inherently hate and fight each other and need #humans to survive? thats kinda weird????'' and im just like. ok the series literally does go into that and its a video game but ok #echoed voice #and i wanna do my final abt symbolism and such in shows that i like but she keeps nitpicking them #and its like she doesnt even want a NEGATIVE portrayal for us to explain why its bad at conveying its message #bc i was like ''hey livestock is used as a dehumanizing thing here and also says something abt how cruel meat factories can be how abt that' #and she was like ''um but if its used to be dehumanizing then theyre implying its bad to compare humans to animals and thats not fair to #to animals'' #like i SORTA see where shes coming from but it feels more exhausting than anything
