⚠️ PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT 📣
📡 COURTESY OF YOUR GENERAL 🪖
Omega Helldivers, it has been brought to the attention of Super Earth High Command that certain officers aboard Super Destroyers have been spreading false rumors regarding the presence of a long-extinct alien species from the southern rim of the galaxy.
Due to the Omega Sector’s location along the southern rim, I wanted to inform you that all rumors being presented are certifiably false, and any officers or Helldivers found spreading such rumors should be reported to the nearest Democracy Officer or to Super Earth High Command directly.
Truth is a pillar of Democracy, your effort is integral to maintaining its stability!
[This concludes Super Earth High Command’s Public Service Announcement.]

Hey it's been a hot minute, I'm gonna go off about Helldivers 2 for a bit, because the whole thing fascinates me.
Funnily enough it's not even the actual game itself that truly fascinates me, as great as it is. I do genuinely think that, while not perfect, it's a very solid game that knows what kind of experience it wants to deliver, and does a fantastic job delivering on it. The Starship Troopers-esque satire is hilarious, and I love how much the gameplay reinforces that satire through things like reinforcements canonically being a whole new Helldiver sent into the meat grinder, and that the mission still counts as a celebrated victory even if you never make it back alive. I could even talk about how the objectively clunky system for calling in orbital support is actually a positive for the game, but only this game and the type of experience it's selling.
But none of that is what fascinates me about this game so much. Because y'see, I played the first Helldivers game, and it was also a great bit of fun! It's actually why I was interested in the second one to begin with. But I also know that the first Helldivers was not a very wide reaching game, none of Arrowhead's games have been. They've not done poorly by any means, they're still in business and have been for over a decade now. But they've always been fairly niche affairs. Until now. To really sell the picture, I wanna rattle off player counts for their previous games:
Magicka in 2011, Arrowhead's first big game and published by Paradox, had an all-time max player count of 11,727 players according to SteamDB. I don't believe it was on any other storefronts, but I could be mistaken. A quick wikipedia visit tells me that the game sold roughly a million units over a year which, again, not bad! Especially for a game that is admittedly fairly unusual, but is a lot of fun!
The Showdown Effect in 2013, which I only just found out about right now after double checking my numbers, had a all time high of just 3,284 according to SteamDB, and is now delisted from Steam. Though apparently there's a remake from another company happening? There's a lot less info on this one in general.
Gauntlet in 2014, this one I do know a bit more about since I also played this one. A remake of the original 1985 game, and was a good bit of fun as well! This one is trickier to get an accurate player count reading, because it did have a PS4 release and those are harder to find numbers for. Regardless, it was also on Steam, so therefore I can use those numbers at least, which gives me a max consecutive player count of 12,730. I don't know how much PS4 factored into this.
And now we get to the real interesting one: Helldivers 1. Again, this is tricky because not only was it on console, but it was actually on console before it was ever on PC, which heavily skews numbers. SteamDB has the peak at just 6,744, but this doesn't sit right with me. I've seen estimates of 50k people around the place, some say 35k, but never a solid source. It's also very difficult to search atm because of how much Helldivers 2 is blowing up. Speaking of...
So Helldivers 1 is their most popular game, and I'll be generous and say that the 50k count is the accurate one. So surely Helldivers 2 can't be that much more- oh I'm not even going to pretend, you already know what's going on here. The game has reached ~450k concurrent players just on Steam alone! And the game also exists on PS5, and if I recall correctly: there's official statements saying that the player counts are roughly equal with each other. That means a peak of ~900,000 individual players. To illustrate how bonkers batshit insane that is, motherfucking Fortnite has a current consecutive player count of roughly one million.
Let me reiterate: a game that came out of basically nowhere with little marketing, from a small studio with only about 100 employees, is rivaling the juggernaut that is fucking Fortnite. That is insane.
As someone who has played all of Arrowhead's previous games besides The Showdown Effect, this is bonkers. There's a reason the sentiment was "there's no way to have predicted this" when the servers were at their worst, because look at the previous data! How is anyone supposed to predict a sequel to a niche game (from a company very few people have heard about) to get a ~1800% increase in max player count? Their initial server capacity was 250k, which would've been very optimistic if you were just going by Helldivers 1 numbers. But then that wasn't enough. And then 360k wasn't enough. And then 450k wasn't enough. We're now at 700k server capacity and just finally getting things under control. This game just exploded in a way no one could have reasonably predicted. And I have no idea why this is the case either.
I'm not saying it's not deserved; it absolutely is! Like I said, game is great, and there's not even any shitty business practices I can bitch at this time! It's just so sudden and out of nowhere that it baffles me. Such a small percentage of these players would've even heard of the first game, let alone played it. It didn't have a massive marketing campaign, this is pretty much all spread through word of mouth, which is insane in its own right. It's not even like the game is entering an untapped market, it shares its existence with games like Deep Rock Galactic, Vermintide, Darktide, the actual Starship Troopers game, probably some others I'm forgetting. And yet, despite all of this, it breached containment something fierce. I don't have a big conclusion to make from all this, I'd love to be able to say "oh people are just getting tired of Triple A- oh I'm sorry, Quadruple A gaming and this is a breath of fresh air" and it is that, as was Baldur's Gate 3, but I'm not naive enough to think that's the main reason. Not when so many other great games continue to go undiscovered, and so many people still end up buying whatever the next big Triple A thing is. It's a great game to play with friends, and there's a lot going for it and a lot of charm, but such is also the case for the other games I already listed in this paragraph and they don't see the same popularity.
Whether it's just dumb fucking luck, or a really oddly specific set of circumstances at play that I can't see, I'm just dumbfounded and flabbergasted. But I'm not exactly gonna complain. It's fun getting sent into the meat grinder to spread Managed Democracy, and I'm glad the game is doing as well as it is, though I do hope that the devs get to have a bit of rest once the dust finally settles a little bit.

A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF DIFFERENCES IN AUTOMATON DIFFICULTY FOR HELLDIVERS 2
(UPDATED ON APRIL 2024)
So, I've decided to create this list mainly because anytime i've tried searching it up anywhere else, i found absolutely nothing (only "guides" or a bunch of trash articles that are most likely useless garbage information), and it annoyed the hell out of me. So i'm making this for those who need to know.
Additionally, this may not be 100% accurate considering the only way to see all missions across a planet is to complete it or fail it... plus NO ONE has made a list of missions that exist in this game, so i can NOT double check to see if i am correct UNLESS i go in game and just examine each and every mission, so yeah.
TRIVIAL-1 & EASY-2
Mission Area Information
On Trivial, the Map Size is small, so not too much to explore but just has about enough in it to satiate a player who's getting the hang of the game. On Easy (and onwards), the Map Size recieves a slight size boost along with increased number of Points of Interests (ALTHOUGH THIS MAY VARY DEPENDING UPON THE MISSION AREA SIZE IN SAID DIFFICULTY/PLANET) Additionally, on Easy Mode, number of objectives increase for certain missions (namely Raise the Flag), sorta easing the player into what Medium offers.
Main Missions - Eliminate Devastators (Heavy Devastators), Pump Fuel into ICBM, Sabotage Fuels & Supplies, Raise the Flag, Destroy Transmission Network and Terminate Illegal Broadcast
Allied Tactical Objectives will begin appearing after Trivial and the map increases in size.
Enemy Spawning Pool
Trivial - Standard Units Only (Commissars [wield a Gun & Blade, are typically the first the fire off an Alert Flare the moment you make your presence known, they also tend to rush at the player sometimes], Troopers [wield only a gun, stay their distance], & Brawlers [wield dual blades, typically rush you]). Patrols consist of Standard Units.
Easy - Standard Units Receives New Unit (Raiders Introduced, which are Rocket Raiders & MG [Machine Gun] Raiders) & Special Units Introduced ([Standard Devastators [Medium Armored Machine with a Tri/Double Barrelled Cannon] & Beserkers [Built like Devastators but wield two chainsaw blades and are agile on flat surfaces] are now introduced into Spawn pool). Patrols consist of Standard Units and Devastators/Berserkers.
MEDIUM-3
Mission Area Information
After Easy Mode, Enemy Outposts recieve a slight upgrade and boost in numbers. Certain Mission Objectives will now have an additional objective you need to do before you can do the other objective. Certain Mission Types are rotated out in favor for new ones. Additionally, now you must do two missions in order to put in the squad impact of a planet.
New Main Missions - Eliminate Hulk (REPLACEMENT), Conduct Geological Survey, Sabotage Air Bases, Upload Escape Pod Data, Eradicate Automaton Forces, Blitz: Search & Destroy and Launch ICBM.
Removed Missions - Raise the Flag and Destroy Illegal Broadcast
There is a chance to be more than 1 Allied Objective + some new/already seen objectives will appear (1 to 2 Allied Objectives in Medium Mission Area)
Enemy Spawning Pool
Standard Units - Raiders begin taking spots of Troopers (i... do not know why this is the case but there will be a "Raider" sometimes, i dont know if theres a difference between a "Raider" and "Trooper" but... its a thing?) and Striders [a Trooper manning a two legged walker with guns] are now introduced.
Special Units - Devastators receive two new units into their ranks, the Heavy Devastator (although a rare one, sometimes they spawn) & Rocket Devastator (<- these guys should honestly have been Priority Targets for Medium and then introduced in Challenging as an enemy that spawns in) can appear now.
Heavy/Defensive Units - Cannon Towers & Annihilator Tanks are now introduced as a threat but only within Outposts (typically Medium Outposts).
Patrols consist of Standard Units (with a strider or two), Berserkers, and Devastators.
CHALLENGING-4
Mission Area Information
After Medium, this is effectively where the game truly begins in terms of what it has to offer, Points of Interests will now be occupied by standard & special units and Heavy Outposts are now thrown into the pool of Outposts. However, rare samples are now obtainable, allowing for access to additional ship upgrades.
New Main Missions - Retrieve Valuable Data, Emergency Evacuation
Removed Main Missions - Upload Escape Pod Data (Im actually unsure why this doesnt get removed in Medium considering it exists as a Optional Objective in other missions), Eliminate Priority Targets (in general, "unknown as to why"), Destroy Transmission Network
There are now 3 Optional Objectives with a new variant of objective added into the mix, Enemy Objectives, which contains Detector Towers (which can see you from afar and call in Dropships), Mortar Emplacements (you will know when it happens), AA Emplacements (disable the usage of Eagle-1 Stratagems), and Stratagem Jammer (which completely disable the usage of Stratagems as a whole if nearby, these should be considered priority if nearby a main objective)
Enemy Spawning Pool
Standard Units - Raiders receive a new enemy unit known as "Assault Raider", almost akin to Commissars but instead, they will always try to rush you [best method to counter is to kill them before they reach you, otherwise if they die near you and should you have shot their jetpack, you will be blown up].
Special Units - Recieve Little to No Change (other than appearing somewhat more often)
Heavy/Defensive Units - Hulks are introduced, they will be situated within a Main Objective Area or a Heavy Outpost.
Patrols will consist of what they tend to consist in Medium but now there is a rare chance to encounter a patrol containing a singular Hulk.
Extraction Sequences will have the chance to include a Hulk.
HARD-5
Mission Area Information
If anything, this is where the "real game begins", as you are now given a taste of venom by the devs and Operation Modifiers are introduced. Its relatively similar to Challenging except "massive enemies" are now a thing (whatever that means), and there are 3 Missions in one area.
Operation Modifiers will alter the way you perform or act in a given mission zone, these range from Complex Stratagem Plotting (which increases the call-in time for Stratagems by 50%, INCLUDING the Pelican-1 Extraction Sequence), AA Defenses (which reduces your max stratagem slots, letting you only carry 3), and Orbital Flucations (which increases the Cooldown Time for Stratagems by 25%)
Optional Objective Numbers seem to remain the same (3 Objectives, although i think theres a chance to be four?). New Objective Type is added, the Gunship Fabricator, which will generate Gunships which can gun you down with Machineguns and Rockets.
New Main Missions - Not many, however, Sabotage Airbase gets an update where one of the objectives is replaced by a Air Tower that you must destroy. Other than that, most missions stay the same.
Command Bunker has been moved to this Difficulty (as of a recent patch), now sporting two command bunkers instead of one, side-note, there's a chance that only two Optional Objectives will appear on this mission (for whatever reason I've had one instance where there were only two tactical objectives available on this mission type, my hypothesis was that the two Command Bunkers may have taken up too much space around the map).
Removed Missions - None to my Observation
Enemy Spawning Pool
Standard Units - Remain Unchanged Maurader is introduced [i think at this difficulty, should check Challenging to see if they appear there], acting as a more formidable variant to the standard Raider & Trooper.
Special Units - Remain Unchanged (although may be more numerous than usual i think? i could be wrong) Gunship is Introduced.
Heavy Units - Remain Unchanged (with the exception to that there may be more of them? Once again, unsure)
Patrols - More Hulk Patrols seemingly appear along side with Patrols being sprinkled with more Devastators. Tanks will also randomly appear as well.
Extraction - Random chance of a Tank spawning in (this may not be exclusive to Hard however)
EXTREME-6
Mission Area Information
This is where it all gets started, sub-objectives double and the enemies become even more resilient than ever.
There is a low chance for the Extraction Point to be guarded (i had to update this after having a guarded Extraction Zone today in a Extreme Mission)
Main Missions & Optional Objectives - Same as before, now theres guaranteed to be an additional objective
(4 Optional Objectives Available).
Enemy Spawning Pool
Standard Units - Ditto.
Special Units - Ditto.
Heavy Units - Shredder Tanks are now introduced + Tanks are now called in via Dropships (UPDATED AROUND 3/28/2024).
Patrols - Ditto
Extractions - Ditto
SUICIDE MISSION-7
Mission Area Information
Points of Interests are now heavily guarded and protected by Cannon Turrets and Heavier Enemies at times, more tougher enemies await at various locations, and the entire environment (or at least areas of interest) is under total enemy control. You are in the heart of the enemy's base of operations.
You will be wanting to avoid as much action as possible at times (unless you & your team are like a well oiled machine, even then, still avoid as much heavy action as you can).
However, there is good news, its at difficulty 7 you are finally able to obtain the last Sample-Type, Super Uranium (located at "Thumb" Rocks), which allows you to upgrade your remaining ship modules.
New Main Mission - None that I've seen.
Optional Objectives - Around 4 to 5?
Enemy Spawning Pool
Standard, Special, & Heavy Units - All at their peak. Be weary. Stay safe.
One New Enemy Unit - Factory Strider, Information Unknown: Be Prepared.
Defense Structure - All at their peak.
Patrols - At their peak. Avoid at all costs.
Extraction - Refer to Mission Area Information.
From this point on, Mission 8 & Mission 9 are akin to Mission 7 except more enemies (and probably more mission debuffs).
And thus, this concludes the stuff i know, hope you enjoyed reading this. Good luck Helldivers, and together, hopefully we can liberate Troost in time.
And thus concludes information on the Automatons, however soon they will soon be eradicated because they only have two planets remaining. However i hope that some of this information is at least somewhat helpful.

Also just in general I've never seen a community blow up so much over what is frankly. Not a huge patch.
Like I've seen patches in other games that straights up ruined and made entire characters/playstyle/weapons unusable be less contentious than what happened here.
Yeah criticisms about balancing on the harder difficulties are valid, frankly, but people like. Completely went feral over this.

i need a helldivers 2 news channel that doesn’t constantly complain about the difficulty. This game has 9 goddamn difficulty modes just set yours down a level or two after an update until you find the meta. Some seriously embarrassing complaints seem to come out the moment literally anything is patched or changed

🪖 OMEGA ORDERS 📋
Here’s your FORMER briefing, Helldivers.
[ START OF BRIEFING ]
TASK FORCE: OMEGA
DESIGNATION: SPECIAL OPERATIONS
DATE: 13TH OF MARCH, 2024
STATIONED: MERIDIA
OBJECTIVE: ACTIVATE TERMINID CONTROL SYSTEM (TCS) [MISSION COMPLETE]
MESSAGE: Outstanding work, Helldivers. I just received confirmation that Fenrir III was successfully liberated, with a successful TCS activation finishing the job. We’re one step closer to completing our major orders, but that requires more hard work and dedication. Task Force Omega has been approved for relocation to the Meridia system, where we will hopefully do as we’ve just done on Fenrir III. Upon news of this mission being fulfilled, await further orders on our next relocation. Keep doing your part, Helldivers. LIBERTY, JUSTICE, DEMOCRACY.

Theory that Helldivers 2 actually had a Director much like Left for Dead games do, except the devs are actively managing games with a set amount of resources and Bot Drops and thats why higher difficulties are just like that.
UPDATE:
I made this post earlier tonight and now apparently this comds out!?!?!?@!?

Around a dozen common monsters were not going to end up with events, but at this point it was feeling weird to exclude them, right? So let's put minigames in here! I've really stepped in the scope creep this time. These are so fun to make though, it's giving me life!
You can now give Voltage Veyeral a scrub with a minigame lifted right out of Helldivers. Notably, Helldivers 2 caused me to delay my last update by a day while I scrambled to finish this minigame that I decided to make on the spot. (Also I was playing it a lot lol)

Everybody says they're tired of live service games and they're finished but then Palworld, Helldivers 2 and Last Epoch are all massive breakout games
Yep! I think all of those games work naturally in that format, though. Actually, Palworld is maybe a weird fit since it's technically in Early Access, so it'll be getting updates either way, rather than just getting updates to better serve some kind of monetization track.
When people say they don't like Live Service games, what they're usually actually saying is that they don't like bad games and they don't like it when good games are made to feel more like a store than a game.
When all that stuff is done well and you've got the right game married to the right kind of ongoing update model and interesting (or at least unobtrusive) microtransactions you often end up having one of the biggest games in the world on your hands. This is partially why so many publishers chase after this kind of success, though hopefully they're learning that there's much more to it than just shoving a shop and a battle pass onto whatever half-assed co-op game you've got in development.
Also, as an aside here, is Last Epoch _really_ a massive breakout? I guess they've been having popularity-based server issues, so maybe I shouldn't be shocked, but I played the first couple hours of it and it seems like a totally fine free-to-play ARPG that they're selling for $35. Maybe it's just that Diablo IV players are desperate for something else at this point, but as I started filling out the slots on my character and staring at the mastery trees it didn't seem like... amazing or anything. I don't know, I'll keep poking away at it.
