Alright it’s been a week and I haven’t stopped thinking about them, so have some Tommry headcanons for the soul:

Tommy Boy constantly has to remind Henry that he doesn’t need to be happy and smiling all the time. Sometimes there are bad days, and Henry has just as much a right to feel them as anyone else.

Conversely, Henry is always there to keep Tommy Boy from worrying about the other boys. Tommy Boy feels the need to be a protector a lot of the time. Henry wants Tommy Boy to know that while he appreciates it, Tommy Boy doesn’t need to worry about him.

Henry fell first. Tommy Boy fell harder.

For many reasons, both of them have difficulty saying I love you. They’ve nicknamed love the “big word,” and instead of saying I love you to each other they’ll just smile and say Big Word. They know what the other person means, and that’s plenty for them.

Buttons gave Henry a shovel talk. Splasher helped (he threatened to kick Henry in the kneecaps… repeatedly). Tommy Boy wanted to die from embarrassment. Henry thought it was very sweet.

Okay okay so how old is Henry in your hcs cuz like I put him as one of the olderish newsies but not as old as crutchie specs and jack. I'm debating on this as a have a story where there's a situation the older newsies are trying to take care of so jo jo and buttons are helping run things temporarily while the rest do that but I'm debating whether he and Romeo are 14 or younger like 12 like elmer. Ahhh I'd welcome your expertise.

aaaaa okay so I used to see henry in the middle in terms of age, like around 14-15 so older than most newsies but not part of the "older" group

however since uksies I think I hc him as being around 16 ! because he's still younger than jack, but through his attitude and the people he hangs out with (specs/finch/race/albert = the oldest newsies) it's rather clear he's in the older group, which would make him one of the official caretakers for the younger ones !

Mentions of death and difficult upbringings, as to be expected with newsie backstories

Henry

Henry's mother died when he was still a baby, leaving him to be raised by his father. He grew up in the family deli, helping out as soon as he was old enough. He loved working with his dad and learning all sorts of recipes, and he was popular with the customers. They weren't rich, and it took a lot of work to keep the deli open, but Mr. Butler always made sure Henry was fed, clothed and happy.

His father very suddenly and rapidly got sick when Henry was eleven. When he learned he wasn't going to make it, he gave Henry all his (admittedly meagre) savings and told him to find a lodging house or orphanage, somewhere he'd be looked after. Henry was on the streets for while though, literally sick from grief, until Specs and Race found him and brought him to the lodging house. Took him a while to recover from the shock of his father's death -and he never fully processed the grief- but he fell into the swing of being a newsie quite quickly.

Mike and Ike

Mike and Ike were born to a widowed mother late one night- or very early morning, in Ike's case. The birth was a difficult one, leading to nearly two hours between the twins, and both Ike and their mother were ill for some time after.

Their mother unintentionally favoured Ike as the twins grew up, as she'd been so scared of losing him for months after he'd been born. She imprinted this mindset onto Mike over time, and whilst he adored his brother he started to grow a little resentful towards their mother; why wasn't he as important to her as Ike?

Their mother got ill and died when the twins were six, and they went to live with their mother's cousin. Mike was her favourite, as she found him easier to look after than Ike. Ike was the quiet one whilst Mike was the chatterbox, but Ike was prone to meltdowns and crying fits when overwhelmed that their mother's cousin found hard to manage.

She also passed away, when the twins were ten. Mike took the initiative to find them somewhere to live, not wanting to be handed off to someone else who'd prioritise one over the other, and they ended up at the Lower Manhattan lodging house. Mike still vastly prioritised Ike over himself, but the other boys made sure they were treated equally.
