me, an american newsie-liker, having absolutely zero idea who splasher is: 😐
It’s taken me literally ages to respond to this I’m so sorry!
Anyway, meet Splasher:
Tumblr media
pic creds: missiestheatregram on insta
In uksies he was played by Ross Dorrington, the man with cheekbones to the gods.
Basically post livesies, Splasher replaced Sniper in subsequent Newsies productions. RIP Sniper, we miss you. 🙏
Splasher is the baby of the Manhattan boys, likely between the ages of 10-12. All the boys consider him to be their little brother, but he’s particularly close to Tommy Boy and Buttons.
He also enjoys defying the laws of gravity… a lot…

Overall he’s just a wee little guy and I love him a lot. Papers is all he’s got, but he deserves the whole world.

Buttons and Tommy Boy, who commonly have Splasher holding onto them and hanging off of them.
Buttons is just sitting there and stitching a patch onto somebody's shirt, and suddenly, Splasher is just crawling up into their arms. They just wrap a tight arm around him and keeps on working.
Tommy Boy is simply selling a paper, and Splasher just jumps onto his back. The person buying the paper was a little taken aback, but Tommy Boy didn't even flinch, just a "Oh, hey Splish-Splash."

Jack muttering" take me instead your not touching him."
Specs pulling splasher away to gently soothe him. And jack desperately yelling no scrambling in their direction.
Blink and skittery holding him. "Shhh Jackie we gotcha. Yer allright now. We aint gonna letcha go there again."
Jack not recognizing them crying silentky thinking he failed and his friends hearts breaking just holding him till he falls into a fitful sleep and eventually they do too though not before looking at each other desperately for way too long wondering what they can do
(based on this)
Jack’s pulled from sleep by a little hand shaking his shoulder. It’s gentle and tentative, accompanied by the sniffling of a kid about to burst into tears - and suddenly Jack is wide awake.
“Shh,” he hisses immediately, a knee-jerk reaction, as he hauls himself upright in his bunk and then over the side, bare feet hitting the floor silently but hard enough to make his shins sing. He always sleeps in a top bunk if there’s one going, there ain’t as many rats that can get up there, but that means if there’s a kid shaking him they must be stood on the lower bunk, which means they might wake those kids up, which means more noise and more trouble.
Sure enough, the kid - Splasher, Splasher - has his bare feet planted on the bunk below Jack, a mattress occupied by a sleeping body. He’s got one hand gripping Jack’s bunk to keep balance while the other - the one he’d used to wake Jack up - is wiping clumsily at the tears streaming down his face.
“Jack,” he whines.
“S’okay,” Jack whispers, scooping Splasher up under the arms and lifting him down to the ground, glancing cautiously to see if the body in the bunk is stirring but panicking too hard to really look. He then crouches in front of the kid, still holding him by either side of his ribs to keep him close and still. “S’okay. Alright? Calm down. You gotta calm down. You gotta be quiet.”
Splasher hiccups. It’s deafeningly loud to Jack’s ears, and he feels himself start to panic because the kid is starting to cry. His face screws up and he huddles closer to Jack, his one hand gripping tight at Jack’s shirt.
“Jack—“ he repeats, a sob this time.
“Shh!” Jack hisses again, maybe a little sharper than he’d meant to, but he doesn’t need any listening guards to hear his name and know it’s him. There could even be listening kids, the types who’ll snitch and tell the guards Jack was up making noise hours past lights out just to get him beat or at most get themselves an extra piece of bread next week, but that’s his second priority. His first is the kid, and getting the kid to be quiet.
“You gotta stop. You gotta stop, buddy - quiet, okay? Just—just—‘s’okay, just…”
His mind is blank. Splasher is sobbing, the loud crying of a kid that don’t know what’s coming, and Jack can’t let him find out. He can’t, he can’t, the kid’s only tiny, and he’s already crying, he’s shaking like he’s scared - and suddenly his eyes, all huge and full of tears, go behind Jack like there’s someone there, and Jack immediately knows there is. His stomach drops like a stone, like his chest caved in and fell there and left the space around his pounding heart chillingly empty, and he could throw up. He’s scared. But he ain’t scared, ‘cause Splasher’s scared, and he’ll take any beating like it don’t hurt at all to make sure a kid stays safe.
He wrenches Splasher behind him rough enough to make the kid shriek, and spins with the knowledge that maybe the first hit won’t hurt so bad if he acts like he was gunning for it.
“Was me!” he says, and it’s only then that he realises he’s breathless. He forces himself to keep speaking regardless, throat feeling like it’s closing. “Was me, I woke ‘im up, ‘s’my fault, please—“
Please don’t hurt him. Please don’t hurt him. Lord, Splasher ain’t even running, he’s still stood stock still right where Jack shoved him to, even though there’s someone coming right at him now—
“No!” Jack screams, as the person reaches out for Splasher and grabs him, and Splasher goes willingly, like he trusts the monster. He don’t know what’s coming. They ain’t being rough, they’re leading him away careful but firm with hands on his shoulders, but that gentleness don’t mean much. Often enough it means it’s gonna be worse, but there’s hands grabbing Jack too when he tries to go for Splasher. Arms winding around him to hold him back, even as he kicks and wrenches and fights.
“No!” he shouts again, desperate as Splasher gets further and further away. “He didn’t do nothin’! Don’t, don’t! You ain’t touchin’ him, take me, take—‘s’my fault—You ain’t fuckin’ hurtin’ him, please!”
Jack is pulled back helplessly into the chest behind him - smaller than any guard he’s ever seen before - and suddenly he’s sinking to the floor, knees buckling, entirely unable to get air into his lungs. They’re burning, searing, as hot as the burning in his eyes, and his ears are roaring like there’s a fire too. He can’t hear nothing, can’t feel nothing, can only see Splasher being dragged away - he was trusting Jack, he woke Jack up, he wanted Jack to protect him but Jack couldn’t even do that. He failed, the kid’s never gonna trust him again, never gonna trust no one again just like Jack can’t.
“Please,” he sobs. “I gotta—he’s jus’ a kid—‘s’my fault—“
He wrenches again against the hold on him, barely a useless little jerk against those arms bound way too tender around his waist and chest, wrapped around him like a hug, and maybe he’s insane but finally he can’t help but melt. Exhaustion and failure crash over him like a wave to finally drown him, and he’s left adrift, sobbing like a kid. Sobbing like Splasher did.
Blink feels like he can’t breathe either. There’s something visceral about watching Jack writhing and wheezing like this, something that makes his brain feel like maybe there really ain’t any air in the room, even though he’s talking so there must be. He don’t think Jack is hearing a word of it, but it’s worth it just to say it. To not feel quite as helpless as they is.
“Yer alright. Yer alright, Jackie, it ain’t real. You ain’t there. Jus’ a nightmare, fella. Splash ‘s’fine, he’s wit’ Specs, he’s safe. You’re fine.”
“He ain’t fine,” Skittery scoffs, venomous, almost as breathless as Jack is.
He’s still holding him tight, even though Jack ain’t fighting anymore. It looks more like a hug now, just holding instead of restraining, and Skittery’d probably sooner die than admit it but Blink supposes that’s probably what it is. Jack is all boneless, just crying, and Skittery’s holding him like he’s trying to hold him together.
“You’re here,” Skittery tells Jack, spoken into the wild sweaty mop of Jack’s hair. “You’re at home, Jack. You’re alright now. You’re safe. Alright?”
Jack definitely ain’t listening. His eyes are still all distant and glazed over, but his eyelids are drooping like maybe he might fall asleep again, like maybe the fear’s already crashed, and on nights like this, that’s often more than they can ask for.
“Get him back in bed,” Blink murmurs softly to Skittery. “C’mon. We can get ‘im up together.”
They do. They haul him into Blink’s bunk behind them, underneath Jack’s, and crawl in with him while fiercely ignoring the eyes all watching them, startled awake by the commotion and Jack’s hollering. Crutchie’s watching from the next bunk over, but Blink can’t stomach looking at him - though not much less than he can stomach looking at Skittery where he’s on Jack’s other side, curling himself around Jack’s back. Skittery looks sick, maybe as sick as Blink feels.
Blink settles himself against Jack’s front and pulls his face to his chest, wincing at the burn of his tears and the clammy feel of his skin.
“Yer alright,” Blink tells him, quiet. “We got you, Jack. We ain’t lettin’ you go back there.”
Jack’s passed out a second later. He’s out cold, dead asleep like he got knocked on the head, and Blink don’t doubt for a second he’ll wake up in the morning still exhausted and without a damn clue what happened, like he always does when he has turns like this.
Blink and Skittery’ll remember, though. Just like they’ll remember every second they spent staring at each other over the top of Jack’s head, through sweat-damp strands of his dark hair, until they both finally manage to pass out too.
(And, true to form, Jack doesn’t remember a damn thing in the morning. He don’t even know which way’s up. He looks like shit and can hardly walk straight, stumbling with bleary, half-glazed eyes right out of Blink’s bunk a full hour before the bell’s rung. But he won’t settle - not until Blink gets up too and guides him over to where Splasher is tucked with Specs in his bunk, cosy and fast asleep and entirely unharmed.
“Think I musta had a rough dream last night,” Jack mumbles. Blink doesn’t correct him.)

Slasher and Splasher having a third identical sibling (bless their mama) named something completely different
Their nickname is like Magnet or smth
I dusted off my newsies phase. buckle up, kids.
okay so that’s like
hmm
math
gimme a second
(*counts*)
okay, we’ve got 5/9 out of the siblings. whew. cool.
(ROLL CALL- elmer, slasher, splasher, magnet, graves)
so magnet looks like splasher and slasher. like. a LOT like splasher and slasher (I don’t know which one of them it was, but one of their parents had KILLER genes, dude), but his hair is a lil longer, and- this is going to shock you, so prepare yourself- he is the only sibling of 9 you can’t hear from across the block. he’s like,,, quiet???? the rest of the newsies thought he was splasher and just sick for a week straight???? when the newsies DID realize he wasn’t his brother, they obviously freak out because ohhhhhhhh that’s another name they need to think of.
this process takes them f o r e v e r. the original thought it to name him something that matches with slasher and splasher, but then elmer was like but what about me???? so they didn’t do that. skittery half-jokingly called him mouse because he was quiet, but that one didn’t stick.
then, blink, in his ever present genius (read: he’s drunk when this happens), calls him ‘a- wait, what do you call it, a- a- A MAGNET- ‘cause you’re like, always around elmer ‘cause you like him but never around splasher ‘cause you don’t like him’. mush, who isn’t drunk but is incredibly tired and slap-happy, fervently agrees with his best friend and that’s that.
magnet’s short and scrawnier than his brothers, and right above elmer in age order, with roughly 11 months between them.
he’s not shy, per se, but doesn’t really want to talk to most of the newsies as a general rule (he is the silent shadow of buttons, and occasionally elmer when the majority of his brother’s friends aren’t around).
he always reads thoroughly through the paper before he sells, and then tells some of the younger kids what to say.
(elmer says it’s because he’s nice. splasher says it’s because he wants an army. graves says it’s because he gets embarrassed for the kids when they say the most absurd thing and then immediately get called out. one of them is correct.)(it’s not elmer.)
he’s got a resting bitch face. it’s genetic. he’s not that pissed most of the time.
he doesn’t have a favorite color, but gets uncomfortable when people ask so he says it’s orange.
he doesn’t really like kids? like, he’ll help them out, sure. but they also scare the shit out of him and they should go away.
flowers and pollen make his nose itch. he also doesn’t like those.
horses are cool as shit to him. call him the original horse girl. boy will just. stare at them. for hours.
somewhat related to one of the top ones, but the second hand embarrassment this man feels- sweet jesus. the force isn’t with him, but the second-hand embarrassment he feels daily sure is.
✨magnet✨

Moments I loved in Newsies London
UKsies is a fansie's dream, every member of the cast is so in character even after the show ends and it leads to brilliant moments and interactions such as these:
*spoilers under the cut*
During 'Santa Fe (prologue)' there is fully a newsie undressing on the side of the stage, if you're sitting in the Bronx you'll get a lovely view
Zipline
Specs breaks up a fight between Race and Albert before 'Carrying the Banner' even starts
Crutchie has his own slingshot and shoots various members of the cast with varying degrees of accuracy
*steals apples from fruit cart, celebrates, gives one to a newsie sat alone*
Splasher jumps a skipping rope, he then proceeds to do a back flip in said skipping rope. You'll be hearing more about Splasher (Ross Dorrington) he is Something Else
Race actually smokes his cigar and blows the smoke in Morris' face
Splasher gets yeeted, cheerleader style
Oscar deliberately takes the paper from Davey's stack
Les makes sure to show his sad face to each side of the audience
Newsie fully asleep on the stairs on the side of the stage during 'The Bottom Line'
'Football? VIOLENT'
Davey tries to sell his last paper to the audience 'paper for you? Nope? Okay then :(
Les blows a bowery beauty a kiss and she gives him a feather, adorable
Couple of newsies watch Medda's show ('she's talking to me!' 'Nah, she's talking to me')
One of the newsies (?Race) nods his head along to all the knocks in 'Don't Come a-Knocking'
Bowery beauty kick line punctuated with 'woo!'s
Flirting 101 with Jack: 'the new york sun? I work for the world :D' *swings his legs and shows off his newsie bag proudly*
There is so much hugging in this show, this cast is so affectionate, its adorable
'AiNt wE tHe HoI PoLlOi'
'We got a ton of rotten fruit and perfect aim' *slingshots newspapers everywhere*
References to bway seize the day choreo in world will know
'Who wants Brooklyn?' (?race or tommy boy, couldn't see) *puts cap over face and plays dead*
Jack stays to talk to Katherine instead of going with the boys, Crutchie tries to get his attention - 'Jack come on! Oh for God's sake' and walks off. From where I was sat it sounded like ffs
The newsie wheeling Katherine's chair on stage for 'Watch What Happens' rides on it and goes 'woo!', she thanks them
side note: Matthew Duckett's Crutchie uses his crutch on the (technically) correct side, i.e. opposite side to injury, random but we love to see some medical accuracy in our shows lol
Crutchie initiates fighting the scabs and looks disappointed when he's stopped
Splasher doing no less than 10 box jumps in a row, possibly more
Splasher gets yeeted pt2
Les ascending
Crutchie using his crutch as a jousting pole
'They're slaughtering us!' *Splasher gets yeeted pt3*
Act 2
Cup clinkage
Driving the tables like cars around in kony - 'Zyoom!!!"
Ascension
Katherine's fork crown, apple orb and paper scepter
Crutchie breaking the forth wall and grinning conspiratorially at the audience in 'Letter from the Refuge'
Specs coming to get the letter from Crutchie and a refuge newsie helping him offstage
Jack putting les on his shoulders in 'Watch What Happens (reprise)'
Jack dusting himself off a seat in Pulitzer's office
The general reaction to Brooklyn
Jack hurriedly taking down his drawings when Katherine's there and hesitating before taking down a pic of (who I assume to be) Crutchie
'These kids put out a pretty good papeeerrrr' *runs away from pulitzer*
Roosevelt handshake fangirling
Spot intimidating Pulitzer
Crutchie wearing a police hat when he comes back in ('aint been the same without ya man!')
Crutchie holding his character and wincing to himself after getting his papers in the finale
'You already work for my father' - cue Crutchie breaking the 4th wall again to look directly at me and call Jack a numbnuts
Race greeting Wiesel with 'hey beautiful'
Spot to other newsies 'im not scary!' *hugs*
*standing ovation*

i mean. now i gotta ask. approaches to the scabs??? 🎤
-@jack-kellys
oh hello!! okay i'm not sure if this is for the 'opinions on [x]' ask game or just in general so im just gonna sort of spew my opinions out there and hope they make sense
i think i may have gotten. a BIT overexcited about just how many thoughts i have about the scabbers because i am not,,, the MOST aware of the bg newsies. uksies changed that cause the shows just so interactive you can never NOT be aware of them. that being said i only really know tommy boy and splasher, and i really don't know who the third scabber is. i'm sorry i know i'm a fake fan but please bear with me i swear i have good stuff for this!! mostly!! i'm gonna put it under the cut cause this got long but. i think it's good!!
so the only scabs i can really talk about is tommy boy and splasher and like. i think about their dynamic SO much. i find it interesting that splasher got his name from saving a boy from drowning yet was too scared to run in during the strike. i mean granted he's a kid but in my mind there's more to it - it might be a bit odd to explain but bear with me!! so for starters i basically just took @walkman-cat's hc of splasher being a greek immigrant as canon - anything that adds a new distinct context to the newsies actions and behaviours i just,,, LOVE - but i also got very invested in what people had to say about splasher and tommy boy's dynamic. they do seem very brotherly, and from what i've seen and heard, tommy boy acts like an older protective figure while splasher's more friendly and childlike - i think i saw a post saying tommy boy was the one who explicitly TOLD splasher to hide when the fighting started? and i just took that as gospel tbh.
in my mind, i think splasher had an older brother who was very, VERY aware that things were different for them. they were abiding by a completely different set of rules to everyone else and if anyone saw them breaking those rules, there would be extreme consequences for it. i think his brother took it upon himself to make sure that if splasher was ever too noticeable in any way - too loud, too eager, too childish - he would be the one to punish him for it, because he knew anyone else would only punish him harder. it was better for him to get there first to scare him straight rather than risk anything worse - and i think that's why splasher's bravery in saving a drowning boy isn't as present in the strike. i also said in a conversation with davey that i believe over time his brother might've slowly become more and more bitter over their situation and taking out that frustration on splasher - perhaps not physically, but definitely verbally and emotionally. and i think that eventually reached a breaking point that lead to splasher running away to live at the lodging house.
(i know this is so incredibly specific with very little evidence but like i said earlier, everyone's interpretations of the bg newsies are essentially just OCs and,,, yeah i like my little newsboy ocs. i have thoughts and i like them and i'm going to go with them if and when i write more about these characters, but no one else needs to agree with me on them, especially with how VERY specific that splasher backstory is)
so then Enter Tommy Boy, right? 'cause he KNOWS how it feels to have someone who's older than you, who's meant to protect you and only hurts you instead. i think he took it upon himself to look out for splasher and make sure he didn't feel like he had to hide himself, making him feel able to show his confidence and silliness and general childishness - but i also think this backfired without him knowing because now splasher has a brother figure who likes him, and he really doesn't want him to NOT like him.
i think the crucifix has to have some sort of insight as to how tommy boy was convinced into striking. it can't've been something as simple as 'god says striking is a sin, quit your strike, join our emo newsstand'. i think maybe what got to tommy boy was an idea of a good person, a good brother, a good father, caring and providing for his family no matter what. the delanceys seem so manipulative when he goes to them for help - i think they sold him some kind of idea of how the noble thing to do (the thing he should be doing for splasher, the thing his father never did, the thing that might make his father finally love him because despite everything, he's still just a kid desperate for someone to be proud of him) is to provide for splasher and his father, grit his teeth and bear it, rather than just be selfish and let his father starve, leave splasher to the bulls, just because he wants some more money to go along with it. and hey if that wasn't convincing enough, what if they offer to cover some of his papers for a little while? stretch the pennies a little, one good samaritan to another? that sounds fair - much fairer than just sitting around complaining that you deserve more, right? i think the delanceys and tommy boy have a similar relationship with the word 'deserve'.
i think splasher tried to put up a fight about it, because that's what tommy boy taught him to do - be loud and honest and himself - but maybe tommy boy snaps at him, or perhaps splasher sees how hard tommy boy is trying NOT to snap at him, and he just retreats into himself. the last performance i saw, tommy boy's the one who shoulders past the other newsies while splasher trails behind with his head just hanging towards the floor. i think he's scared of doing things wrong, scared he might let down the family that took him in when his first one didn't want him - so when tommy boy tells him to be realistic, and when mike yells at him to 'do something!', both of them as angry and frustrated as his brother used to be, maybe that strikes a cord in him.
i know this is technically unrelated to the scabbing, but i have thoughts about the aftermath, too. i think their brotherly relationship might be a bit fragile for a bit, for very different reasons. i think splasher assumes he's done something wrong - whether it was hiding or not hiding well enough, whether tommy boy's mad at him for trying to fight or for being so bad at it that he got beaten down immediately. and i think tommy boy's blaming himself for ever putting splasher in that kind of position in the first place. and i think he's thinking especially hard at how in awe splasher seemed of davey - yknow, the guy who actually is someone's brother and (for that matter) is actually GOOD at it - after he convinced splasher to strike. i think he's thinking very hard about how davey knew exactly the right thing to say, about the guy who didn't question his own morals or faith even once, about the guy who shoved past the delanceys and tackled a cop and climbed a rope to keep his brother safe when tommy boy couldn't even block a punch.
that's all i have really. i know it's very specific and leaves out one newsie altogether but i have thought a LOT about tommy boy, splasher, their dynamic and how that might've influenced them scabbing. i hope this was satisfactory? again like most of the stuff i write this is. purely for me. i'm not expecting other people to like it - again i know very very little about the background newsies and whatever canonical information they have, so i'm probably very out of character here, but these are just my thoughts that make me happy, i'm not trying to pass them off as canon in any way. i hope you enjoyed them anyway though :)

maybe. A splasher please wbwb? For the character asks wbwbbw
— davey :]
@walkman-cat literally would be my pleasure im just so happy he exists outside of school productions now
send a character and i’ll do the following:
one aspect about them i love
government assigned youngest. from birth. it’s so funny to me i love it
one aspect i wish more people understood about them
idt we’ve had enough time with his existence for me to feel like anyones done anything ooc with him tbh, BUT- i do find it significant that while he literally like. got his name by jumping into the river and saving someone (read: got his name by taking direct action), mike legit has to yell at him to do something during the big strikebreak fight. so that dichotomy is like. a) unmissable and b) the only two real pieces of character we even have !!
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character
fuck it. trans. transing him rn. like very young age, first coming to the lodge. and then manhattan was like so true you are a boy. let’s help with that
he’s government assigned younger brother, HOWEVER. i think he’s 12 and not super super young tbh. mostly bc i can’t write someone younger than les. but tbh i do this with all the onstage newsies as well idt anyone onstage is playing younger than 12ish in my mind
one character i love seeing them interact with
tommy boyyy~. i looove them. their dynamic is wonderful. that’s tommy’s kid fr
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more
wish he interacted with jack more tbh! i love how jack interacts with jojo (for multiple personal reasons as well) and splasher is also just little and wiry so i wish he picked him up too hehe :)
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character
splasher jojo mike trio of all time. 12-14 year olds just having fun being kids. and then tommy is wearing like 3 diff kiddie backpacks so they don’t run off
i Looove splishsplash so thank u for the ask!!
