Thanks to the excellent detective work of the LA Daily Mirror for providing a definitive (or accurate, at any rate) answer to when L.A.’s iconic Hollywood sign was erected: late November/ early December 1923. The Fontenoy Apartments, an old residential building from the 1920s, can be seen in the distance from most vantage points in Hollywood. 
It has changed not in the slightest during its 100 years of existence. 
Here it is in the shadow of the original Hollywoodland sign.
