guys I’m probably gonna stop with the whole youtube thing or take an extended hiatus after they blew away my average monthly revenue by 75% and hit me with this bullshit in my inbox:
Tumblr media
I think this all started when I read about youtube supposedly overpowering people’s CPU’s if they use an adblocker (which by the way they are very adamant jerks about ads makes perfect sense), so I thought sure I’ll turn it off when I stream so I don’t lose stream connection (which kept happening when I had adblocker on). I (like any youtube creator I think does or should do?) will view back through my streams afterwards for quality control and putting together timestamps and just left ads alone cause my computer has been getting fucked with more often (if anyone else has noticed their CPU’s frying themselves lately cause of the supposed youtube being aggro with RAM please let me know) anyways of course I can’t get a message from a real Youtube worker about any of this, but apparently whatever I did was enough for them to cut my revenue down 75% and not running ads on my videos anymore (which yea I get it they are annoying but it’s what gives me a cut of something) leaving me little motivation to keep up like I usually do. in a copy pasted bot message they said the ‘invalid traffic ban’ has a minimum of 7 days but never said the maximum... it’s been a month so far so idk, but that’s quite some punishment. unless I get a surge of patreon supporters over the next couple months to make the time to do all this stuff worthwhile I’m gonna just focus on getting a better job than my retail slave one which I’ve been meaning to do anyways. of course I’d rather be streaming and making vidmixes 24/7 like I was doing during the COVID shutdown but just not in the cards right now. this is all still weird to me though because all my videos that allow me to are still set to monetized, have nothing in my inbox warning me about copyrights, and thought everything I was doing was in good standing, only things I’ve done abnormal is click OFF my adblocker and reported a channel that kept trying to monetize the PS1 sample on all my PS1 plays... now this happened..... and even though I’m not a huge channel relatively speaking it pains me to see channels that just upload VGM with the same trendy fucking tags get the surplus views which guess none of that counts as invalid traffic and I get the same average views and get fucked with suddenly. so yea, basically FUCK YOUTUBE

Listen guys I get that the new watcher news sucks and is awful, I hate it too, but I think some people are overreacting, just a little bit. The pivot to streaming is absolute bullshit and, objectively, a bad move but you don't need to scorn everything they've ever made just because they made a stupid decision. Ryan, Shane, and Steven are human beings trying to grow their company and they've made a bad bussiness desicion. They are not devils and everything they've ever made is not suddenly bad, they're just idiots, and sometimes, it's okay to just be an idiot.

Telling content creators it's wrong to explore artistic freedom and be independently funded by fans, and they should instead continue taking advertisement revenue from google* is
NOT
the anti-capitalism stance actually.
*(Yes, google owns youtube.)
#Watcher#This post is specifically and exclusively about the people who seem to have the capitalism bit wrong#It's almost fascinating how no one is hearing themselves speak#I feel like some of you don't understand WHY we support small businesses and are anti-monopoly#I've seen multiple posts saying “Shane is so anti-capitalism there's no way this was his idea.”#So... you think it's pro-capitalism to start your own business instead of relying on pennies from the exploitative mega-corporation?#Guys... we support small businesses KNOWING it will cost the consumer more#Stop thinking you're entitled to someone's product#That's what got us in this mess#I understand $6 is a lot for many many people but that is what makes certain things a luxury#Nothing used to be this way#Nothing used to be “free” so you can be monitored for your viewing habits and sold to advertisers#If you see a little guy trying to leave youtube/google and you paint them as the capitalist??? You. have. taken. a. wrong. turn.#I don't know how many more ways I can say it#It is better to support someone (if you can) than to pressure them into taking money from the trillion-dollar corporation#so that you can have what they put all their blood/sweat/tears into for free#If you want something badly enough you're going to have to pay for it#Them's the breaks#If you don't want it that badly then maybe it didn't mean enough to you personally#Thinking otherwise is how corporations like youtube take over and squeeze out small competitors#btw on monopolies: having almost every single video content creator (outside of tiktoks and video game streams) on youtube is BAD#You understand that's bad yes?#How tf are we going to diversify unless SOME CREATORS leave youtube???#It's almost the responsibility of larger creators to do so#Ironically what I said is backwards#In its ideal state‚ capitalism is supposed to inspire innovation and new business‚ giving every person a chance to succeed#But I think we all know that's not the reality we're experiencing#I just went with what everyone means when they say it

I don't think kids really need to be protected from "inappropriate" content so much as they need the tools and safe adults in their lives to handle when they encounter things that they need help with, BUT I will say that there is a growing amount of misinformation and disinformation being spread online that is deliberately targeted towards children and people need to be aware of that and prepare for it.
I'm not exaggerating in the slightest when I say it took about a week of watching Youtube Kids for my baby sister to start parroting Q-Anon level conspiracies about the government hiding the fact that extinct animals like wooly mammoths and saber tooth tigers are still alive. This wasn't innocent shit, she was getting genuinely upset about the government supposedly watching her through the security cameras of a sandwich restaurant.
There are people out there, especially content farms, who knowingly and deliberately spread misinformation to children specifically and who knowingly spread disinformation about basic scientific facts. And that's not even getting into content farms that share "life hacks" that get kids injured or killed.
The internet is becoming more dangerous for kids and it has very little to do with fanfiction, it's almost all because corporations like youtube prioritize their profits over the safety of children.

watching rowan ellis's video abt omegaverse makes me want to kill youtube and its censoring rules. this is a perfectly fine educational video but it mentions sexual things so she has to bleep out words, misspell captions, and omit article names or talk around certain topics and that's honestly lowkey (or highkey) fucked up
i don't understand why youtube just doesn't have different rules for videos with adult topics, honestly kind of like the tumblr community labels, where certain advertisers can focus on as well (like ads for alcoholic drinks. all the yaoi app ads I've seen ppl post abt. sex shop sites. stuff like that yknow??) like basically make it like the opposite of youtube kids, and people can choose in the settings whether or not they want to be recommended videos from that section of youtube on their feed or search results
no straight up porn, but like. educational videos such as this one that talk about sexual topics. sex toy reviews or guides. trans healthcare resources that talk about genitals. these are things that SHOULD be easy to find and that the people making them SHOULD be able to receive money for even if their channel isn't big enough to get sponsorship deals yet, and people should be able to read accurate captions for these videos (or at least uncensored captions in the automatically generated ones. on god i hate google for replacing swear words with underlines) i don't understand why this is such a difficult concept to grasp

I think that YouTube was better when only views & likes/dislikes were measured rather than how long people watch through a video in one sitting. This is partially what killed off rick rolling and mostly killed off creativity and long-form content as well as variety on the platform. They measure video analytics a similar way to how Netflix measures if a show deserves more seasons or not, how much of the entire season (or in this case, video) was watched in one sitting within those 24-48 initial release hours. Absolute worse content analytics change to be normalized on the internet.
I also miss when liked videos didn’t have a cap on how many likes you could have, but I’m not sure if that was always a thing or only a change implemented in recent years to cut back on data storage costs.

i hate youtube ads so much i just watch full-length videos on mute in the miniplayer now. it is a significantly better experience than sitting through 30 seconds or more of unskippable ads every 5 minutes, and im not kidding

These designs don't look like they would fit into the world of Bloodline Heroes of Lithas. It almost feels like the advertising team behind this game stole these from some internet artist just so they could rope a furry audience into their greedy mobile phone game.
I'm pretty sure using someone else's work in an advertisement without their permission is against copyright law. So these guys might be in some serious trouble.

Original promo anon here. Yes I don't have detailed knowledge about advertising/promotion. My comment was just an amateurish assessment.
I myself wouldn't need promotion at all. I follow them on their socials additional to youtube and I'm involved in the fandom. So I wasn't thinking of myself when I messaged you. But I kinda have the feeling (and I don't have hard facts to prove this theory) that we aren't the main part of their viewers. We are just the ones that interact the most and therfore are visible. I assume most viewers only get their information from YouTube. And you already can see it in the comments. People comment that they can't wait to see the rest of the GF season/are confused because they thought it will premiere later this year/ asking for other shows (e.g PH). And they comment like this after watching the episode and they should know it is a one-off episode.
I guess in the end it doesn't matter how confused the other people are, as long as those people watch the shows.
I just wanted to share my thoughts. And it makes me a little bit sad that people perceive these thoughts as too excessive and unnecessary. I think (or at least I hope) it is not wrong to think about this (business related ) part of Watcher. 😣
Hope you all have a nice day/evening/night nonetheless.
oh no it's okay! i hope my response didn't make you feel like you were worrying excessively?? i didn't mean to make you feel bad i was just offering another perspective based on what i've noticed about how they've promoted shows specifically and exclusively on youtube in the past.
no yeah you're right that we who follow them on socials and participate in fandom absolutely aren't the majority of their viewers we're definitely a vocal minority (they have less than 500k followers on instagram and 250k on twitter compared to 2.6 million on youtube).
there are comments on Every video no matter what show is airing that are asking when ghost files (even unsolved) is coming back. before that they were asking when puppet history is coming back. that's why imo it's less confusing to post the trailer before (so on monday in this case) so the comments arent "you said puppet history is coming back what is this" or something like that. idk how to get into the mind of a youtube only viewer or a youtube commentor but that's probably how it would go.
it's totally fine and fun sometimes to think and talk about what the business side of watcher looks like. i hope you have a nice day! im sorry again that the way people including me responded made you feel bad! 🫶

HELLO!
I'm Max, I make videos and stuff. It's not my full time job but I do my best.
I'm a trans woman living in HELL (the UK) and I am now here to tumble around.
I also co-ran a big in-game convention in FFXIV called Lunarcon so I'm a tiny bit into that game it is safe to say.
Here is a video what I made as an example, it's a personal favourite.
youtube
You can follow my YouTube via the video above and you can follow my Twitch here!
twitch_live
I stream a lot of FFXIV, and am currently playing through FF7 Remake, God of War, and like to have variety days where we do whatever we like!
I have no idea what I'm gonna be using this platform for, most likely a lot of XIV posting, posting videos and clips and such, as well as thoughts that I'd rather not have to take to twitter to post.
A lot of the art you see on my thumbnails, my icons and such, are done by @cosmicallytiki who is very cool and lovely.
I will now proceed to spend the next 4 months trying to figure out how to Do This Website

so this European clothing retailer decided to advertise their jean cuts on youtube and it's unintentionally the funniest shit I've seen today. why? well.
Tumblr media
now important context here: in German, die (pronounced 'dee') is just a feminine article, it literally means "the".
Tumblr media
but if an ad gets placed in the middle of an English video and doesn't use a single explicitly German word for most of the ad, even a native speaker is gonna think "they want me to die how?" it keeps getting funnier.
Tumblr media
I mean, holy shit
Tumblr media
i will use these as reaction images until i die
