#hunger games theory

So, I already posted this, but I'll give it one more shot:
I think the view that the reality of The Hunger Games is literally happening right now is so right and probably way scarier than people even realize. When we talk about The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins literally just reflected real capitalist-caused issues to fit into a dystopian world, but it's literally here, from the most obvious thing to the simplest detail:
How the riches and concessions from the Capital to loyalist Districts made people from 1, or 2, or so on, think of themselves as closer (in nature) to people of the capital than people in the poorest Districts? That's middle-class thinking, stopping them from realizing they're just as pressed by the Capital as the poorest Districts (the guy from 2 in the last movie, saying he wasn't Snow's slave when WE KNOW he is, everyone is?)?
How the electric fence around 12 is THE ONLY THING stopping people from starving to death since they could very well USE the land? That's literally the argument for legalized occupation movements on unused land, like MST and MTST in Brazil.
The use of addictive drugs and the idea of a "war on drugs" in District 6 to control the population and quite literally render them useless to weaponize such an important thing as medical supplies against the Capital (not that this should happen, but still)? That's literally happening in most poor countries in the world, just as much with legalized drugs - like the COVID vaccine (which Africa had and is still having trouble acquiring because of the Global North) - as with illegal drugs like weed, which is used as justification for police to invade favelas in Brazil, kill innocent people (children especially) and brutalize dozens more each time in a war against poor POC in special.
What they did to Finnick, Cashmere, and Gloss? Lemme tell you two words: Epstein Scandal.
The control of the media? Comms people can tell you: media always has a side, it's not bad in itself, but most of the mainstream media is right-wing and/or conservative, and I'm not talking just regionally, but globally, hence what we're seeing at mainstream media trying to hide important news, manipulate or maintain the narrative of equivalence between Israel and Palestine when we know what is happening is a genocide, an ethnic-based genocide.
The dehumanization of the people from the Districts suffer by the people of the Capital? How billionaires see the working class, how white people view POC, how the North looks at Global South countries - that's exactly there, people.
It's literally there.
But we're not the Capital, not entirely at least. It's true that we live in constant alienation caused by the overwhelming amount of content we have to swallow on a day to day basis — Brave New World, hello? — but we, the working class, are also the ones who pay the price of the "Capital's" need for profit without wanting to actually work — we work so they don't have to, even though we should be the ones to benefit from the result of our own work.

No cause they cant erase Lucy Gray no matter how hard they try! They may erase her game, her memory but not her music, never her music. Cause the Covey may not sing anymore but their tale in songs will go on to their kids. Maude Ivory is Katniss's grandmother!! Thats how Katniss knows the Hanging Tree song! And i think when Katniss and Prim was kids and Katniss was singing the Hanging Tree and their mother took their necklaces they were making and said "dont sing that ever again" it was because she didnt want anyone knowing they were Covey. Singing that song could get you killed and thats why she didnt want anyone to know that theyre Covey!
They might make everyone forget about Lucy Gray but Covey will remember. Only way Katniss could know about that song is that shes Covey and Maude Ivory makes perfect sense! Maude Ivory loved to eat the plant Katniss and Katniss's dad knows about the lake which only the Covey's know and Katniss can sing everysong with hearing it once (or something like that) therefore Katniss is Maude Ivory's granddaughter!!

Peeta is much closer to Lucy Gray, and Katniss is closer to Sejanus.
spoilers for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
I've seen people compare Lucy Gray and Katniss, and while I do think they have strong similarities (such as being victor girls from 12, having a love for singing, and intentionally or not insighting a rebellion), there isn't that much in common between them beyond that. Lucy Gray loves attention and performance, while Katniss is camera shy and hates being put on display. Katniss has been hunting and killing for her family years, while Lucy Gray and her covey mainly relies on donations from patrons for food. and while they're both exceptionally kind and loving people, Lucy Gray with her way of saying the exact correct thing to manipulate crowds of people make her much more similar to Peeta.
Peeta has always know exactly what to say and do for crowds of people. the interviews with flickerman showed just how persuasive and emotional his words can be. although he isn't much of a singer, the way he works with people and is always shown to be kind and caring to everyone he meets is so much like Lucy Gray.
on the other hand, there's Sejanus, who was born and raised in 2 and moved to the capital. like Katniss, he hated the pomp and circumstance of the capital and absolutely despises the games. the way he enters the arena to be killed by the tributes as protest perfectly mirrors Katniss and the berries.
but the real connection between them both is the mockingjay. Sejanus, after moving to 12 with Snow, is shown to be connected to the jabberjays and by extension the mockingjays. in fact, Snow loathes the birds because of how much they represent Sejanus.
you can't tell me that when someone shows up for the games, incites rebellion and protests, and is called "The Mockingjay" that Snow doesn't immediately see Sejanus in her.
sorry for the long post. feel free to discuss your thoughts.

Haymitch and Effie’s interaction’s whilst Katniss and Peeta are in the games would be so good to read.
Like Effie not knowing how to go about the newly sober Haymitch actually trying to keep the tributes alive during the 74th Hunger Games and actually having an opportunity to talk up her tributes to sponsors for the first time. We already know that she was attempting to before the start of the games by her scientifically incorrect statement about pearls but she’d try so much harder knowing that they have a chance. She’d provide the emotional element that many in the capitol would need that Haymitch wouldn’t be able to provide.
Effie would make a point to talk about getting Katniss back to her sister, try playing the card of think about the poor 12 year old sister she’s trying so hard to protect. Claim that she’s extra motivated, just look at that training score, to get back home to her family. Effie creates the emotional side to Katniss that would move people into trying to get her home. She’d also use Peeta’s claim of love for Katniss to increase this desire to get Katniss. Especially when people are under the impression that he has turned his back on her for the sake of his life.
Haymitch would be the perfect counter to this, aiming to win the support of the more logical sponsors who go by strength over emotion. He’d talk about the skills that she’d used to protect herself in vulnerable moments and the ability to hunt. From past games, sponsors know that underdogs who have basic survival skills are worth betting on to get them to the end. This only getting better when her shooting skills are displayed after killing Glimmer.
Together they are a force to be reckoned with. Despite still bickering behind the scenes about Effie making them look too sensitive to win. Haymitch would try to point out the right people for her to talk up but she’d ignore him, too invested in her own joy about having a successful district. Effie would also be constantly telling him off for not giving them help when he should have, especially Peeta. Haymitch knows better than to trust Effie with his strategy of getting Katniss to act correctly. She would spill the plan to sponsors, ruining the illusion of love.
Overall, they’d be a good team that just bickers constantly behind the scenes.

Enobaria
I think a lot about Enobaria. At first she seems indifferent, if a bit sadist or even barbaric. She ripped a tribute's throat out with her teeth, that seems fitting for a ruthless, sadist girl from district two.
But anyone that knows even a little bit of fighting would realize that it was not an act of sadism. If, for example, she came up to the other tribute from behind, would they not have enough time to run the minute they felt her hands on their body? Would they not be able to somehow wrestle their way out? The idea that the tribute might been someone frail also doesn't make this more plausible. Not to mention, if this was how she wanted to kill them, wouldn't she have done it multiple times throughout the Games? But it's stated in the books, it was her last act of violence in her Games.
Biting someone's neck is an act of desperation. It's something that can only be accomplished by doing it to someone weak or otherwise incapacitated, unlikely because they made it to the final 2. It's much more likely that she was in a struggle with this person, likely had her hands occupied with keeping this tribute's hands/weapons from ending her life.
This is the final duo. The last fight. There’s no ending other then survival or death. Like Katniss said during the fireball attack, you act or die. Enobaria, having been trained for this, knows that. Looking at it this way, it makes her ending to the games so much tragic.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes gives more context as to how the Capitol citizens would have percieved this last act of survival. In the Capitol citizens' eyes, the district people are barely human. Barbaric, in need of control for fear they'll go feral. Enobaria ripping that Tribute's throat out would be a confirmation of this. Of course a District 2 girl would do something so barbaric. That's the backwards mountain country. That's why they're the ones becoming peacekeepers. How else can their feral behavior be contained? Her job as a victor isn't to give the Capitol citizens more entertainment. It's to be held up as a symbol of everything wrong with the district citizens. A reminder that the districts would fall into feral chaos if the capitol released its grip on the districts.
No room for consideration. She probably wasn't comforted by anyone. I wonder if the doctors and capitol attendants made a show of backing away, cowering, giving her wary looks. You could say in this act alone, she was innocent. What else would you expect her to do? Die? What teenage girl would accept that, knowing her death would be braodcast to her parents, her siblings, friends, a lover if she had one? It being the final fight means it would be shown again and again. No one would want their family to see that.
But she doesn't get that empathy. That moment of survival defines her for the rest of her life. It confirms the Capitol's prejudice towards the districts. I doubt her teeth were done with her consent. Haymitch barely got Katniss out of her own cosmetic enhancements. It's actually a rather dangerous cosmetic procedure. How many times have we bit our tongues by accident, drawing blood? Imagine how carefully she'd have to eat for the rest of her life. How often she's been hospitalized from accidentally puncturing her tongue. She couldn't kiss someone, in fear of them poking themselves on her teeth. Everytime she smiles or laughs, her trauma is exposed. And every year, the capitol would make a show of revisiting that moment.
And she's so defined by this act that even Katniss is wary of her. But, she seems to still remember that Enobaria was a child much like her when she won the games. That's why she has enough empathy to give Enobaria immunity, because whatever happened wasn't her fault to begin with. Just like Katniss sentencing Glimmer & the District 4 girl to a horrific death wasn't really her fault.
Of course, when the opportunity to inflict that trauma on the Capitol children pops up, she gleefully takes it. Wanting to give the capitol a taste of their medicine. This last line, to me, cements how traumatized she is by her games. Maybe if she sees a Capitol girl driven to unthinkable acts, being defined by her desperation for the rest of her life, it could lessen the pain of her trauma, if only a little.

Mini Hunger Games Theory—What If District 12 Actually Has Five Victors?
This is mostly just a crack theory, but hear me out for a second. If Lucy Gray’s name and Games were supposed to be erased from history, why on Earth would they announce her name at the Reaping every year? I suppose they could use a fake name, but I think it’s far more likely that they don’t read Lucy Gray’s name at all. Maybe the other name they announce at the Reapings is another Victor from 12 who died before Haymitch was reaped (since they aren’t mentioned in Catching Fire)?

Lucy Gray did not go to District 13
If Lucy Gray survived her encounter with Coriolanus Snow in the books, it is not possible for her to have gone to District 13 for shelter. Let me explain.
In Mockingjay, Katniss is told by the leaders and teachers of District 13 about it's history. Before the first rebellion, 13 was known by the districts only as a graphite mining district. Only the Capitol knew of its (literal) underground military operations and nuclear stockpile. Then the Capitol formed an agreement with 13 to surface bomb them to dust but leave them alone.
Ten years pass. We know that they were considerably weakened and are most likely still recovering and still feeling the direct effects of having their district razed to the ground. It is unclear when the Capitol filmed the propaganda footage showing the irradiated wasteland that Katniss sees, and it is unknown if the degree of radiation was ever lethal.
Assuming Lucy Gray makes it on foot to what are now the ruins of 13, she would have no knowledge of it's underground bunker systems. If she were to find an entrance, it would be heavily guarded and I am positive she would not be allowed to shelter there. They do not know her, even if they do recognize her from her time traveling and singing as an 8-year-old, they would never let her in. They would be wary of Capitol espionage, or her letting in diseases or radiation. I believe it is also said that 13 did not start allowing in refugees until they were strong enough to do so, which, as we've seen, already took decades.
This is a theory I believe is fully disproven by the canon lore of the Hunged Games books.

The 3rd Quarter Quell was rigged
Some people think the 3rd Quarter Quell (I’m just going to abbreviate it 3QQ from now on) was rigged in the sense the Capitol purposely chose for the concept to be tributes being reaped from the existing pool of victors. I do agree that that is very likely, however I do think it was rigged in another sense. Snow could sense an uprising was brewing so naturally he wants to stop it from really starting. To do that, he needs to get rid of people that could be a threat to the Capitol. The capitol has mistreated many of their victors so well deservingly a lot of them are angered at the Capitol and would be willing to join a rebellion.
So they rig the games so that the victors they think are most likely going to be a threat to the Capitol are chosen. For example, Finnick O’Dair. He was forced into prostitution at a young age, and would naturally be very angry at Capitol, along with knowing the secrets of many important Capitol people. If he dies in the Games, it will be unsuspicious and convient for the Capitol. There is another layer added to that though when we consider his district partner, Mags
Mags is an old women incapable of defending herself, so why would she be a threat to the Capitol. we have to remember she wasn’t the person drawn for District 4s female. Annie Cresta was chosen, and the Capitol chose her likely because they knew Finnick was in love with her. Finnick was a career tribute, still young and abled bodied and very much capable of winning the Games. Annie was well known for being batshit crazy, however Finnick would not hesitate to put his life on the line for her, (think like Peeta and Katniss) and if she died, it would deeply depress him, making him either dead or incapable to fight the Games to his full extent, where the other tributes could finish him off.
I also do not think the logic applied to the tributes of District 1 and 2 just knowing their culture and ideology around the Games.
anyways I wrote this half asleep so if it doesn’t make sense that’s why

Unpopular(Popular?) Opinion: I hate the theory that Lucy Gray became President Coin.
Personally, that defeats the purpose of Lucy Gray's character. I rather her live on as a myth, that no one knows what happened to her. In a weird way, not knowing what happened to her IS satisfying in its own way.

Don’t hate me but I just had the funniest idea💀
So we know that Suzanne Collin’s likes to have the names of characters as somewhat of a touchstone to actual historical, or meaningful names so that you can do you’re own research and be like what?? Mind blow! Bc a lot of the times her characters reflect those or what they’re named after.
Ex.
Coriolanus being named for Shakespeare’s Coriolanus
President Coin is reminiscent of the phrase two sides of the same coin
Lucy Gray is obviously the ballad
Livia Cardew as in Livia Drusilla, the wife of Emperor Augustus (he thinks of her a candidate for a wife)
So, all that being said…what if Ma Plinth is actually her name. Hear me out. Maybe her nickname was Ma, but Sejanus just took to calling her that bc that’s what everyone called her. Her Full first name is Martha.
Why? Bc Martha Stuart and Ma is a good Cook.
Why? Bc it’d be funny as hell to have all these people named after ancient Roman’s and ballads and poets, and then this one character dedicated to Martha Stuart.
She is now, and will forever be in my mind, Martha Plinth.

Something I just realised is that because the 75th games only reaped from the existing pool of victors, all the families that normally would put their name in extra time in order to get food for their families couldn’t. So that made the people more desperate then ever. I’m sure Snow thought it would weaken the districts, but I think it just band them together more in their rage and desperation for change.

Hunger Games/Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes theory
*SPOILERS AFOOT*
I think Katniss/Katniss's father are descendants of Maude Ivory.
This would explain how "The Hanging Tree" got passed down to them, though I think the origin of where the song came from would have been lost to time.
