Okay just finished the rwrb movie spoilers below cut

This movie was fine? I guess? I think it cut a lot of parts that helped me connect to the novel, so while I think it was true to the story I don't think it was adapted in a way that was appealing to me. Mostly for three reasons

Tone: the more serious tone left out a lot of jokes and left aside Henry's theater-kid-like melodrama which I felt like made him way more endearing in the novel. I think of the novel as a funny romance with lots of angst, not a romance with angst and some jokes for flavor. Also it made Alex's character feel like he was moving slower, rather than the mile-a-minute way I feel like Alex was in the novel thanks to the comedic elements and also my second bullet:

Removing angst: the claremont-diaz divorce was so insanely relatable for me so cutting it and removing that hurt from Alex made him less appealing to me as a character, not to mention I feel like it caused him to lose a lot of his drive. This Alex was a character that wanted to be a politician, not an Alex that was floundering for the best way to use his talents, letting it change as he figured out where he could help the most but working hard no matter what. Not to mention I don't feel like Henry (and his family's) grief was explored enough. And also Bea. They made her a prep to cut her powder princess story. wtf. I totally wanted to see punk bea for my lesbian heart to pine over okay

June: She was so important in the novel and the merger of her and Nora's characters for simplicity's sake made movie Nora worse. I like that June gave Alex someone to play off of in both deep and comedic ways. Nora just didn't serve that purpose in the novel, she was a quirky brainy queer character that helped move the plot along (also they cut Nora's agency by making Alex and Henry be outed by Alex's jealous ex instead of political scandal for her to unwravel).

Also they removed Herny's interesting charity work stuff and his whole not touching monarchy money which helped him have more depth. (IDK what that fell under I just had to say that too, though that was sort of minor)

Anyways now what I liked:

Casting, I think it was impeccable, and I really liked who they casted for Phillip (cant be assed to google his name rn but he did great at his role of being resident homophobic asshole). And I did like Uma Thurman as this version of President Claremont. Also the actress for Zahra did amazing at adapting her character.

I liked the way they found times to cut down on plot events (cutting wimbledon and splitting up the big moments from the LA adventure into two other events that they kept, cutting Ellen's "so youre bi and dating a prince" power point but still doing a nod to it in a line)

The choice to lean into spanish language music was great. Literarally just my latino input, not much else to say here

I really liked how they dealt with space and the reading aloud of text conversations in the beginning, I had kinda been hoping it had carried over into the emails, which imo have many more iconic parts to them.

So yeah, good movie I guess, it just isn't as compelling to me as the book because they cut a lot of the stuff that helped me personally connect with characters, especially Alex, but it wasn't an awful adaptation of the story.

listen ok im by no means an expert on what is or is not "punk" but i think what the ceaseless labelling of things as punk comes down to is the inability for people to conceptualise that something can be both a set of political beliefs and an aesthetic.

every couple of months i have the urge to just be the punk rock menace i was born to be. i wanna be in bands and go to shows and be in mosh pits and i want to call out fucked up shit and make stands and do change around me, and i wanna not give any fucks on what people think about me and dress how i want and scream and shout and punch racists in the face.

and then i remember that its very hard doing that, because i don't know any other musicians who wanna be in bands, i cant go to shows because the closest ones are an hour away, i'm scared of mosh pits, i can't make any change around me because i'm only 15, i worry that somebody's gonna always have something to say about me (which is true and happens a lot) and i don't wanna get into a fight because i punched someone in the face.

Maybe one day I can live my dream though.

i have a moral kindof question for you guys and this might get a little wordy….so basically theres this punk guy who comes to this volunteer thing i do with my friend and hes REALLY big in the community and he sells shirts online and his store is really popular. and he screen prints his shirts himself which is really cool (the designs are cringe in my opinion but whatever thats my own stupid issue with it). and a lot of the shirts are anticapitalist or anti establishment what have you basically about social justice etc. and he brought some yesterday and i could not help but notice that the shirts themselves are sourced from like nicaragua and like small countries through large manufacturers. and that kind of rubbed me the wrong way TO BE HONEST like idk heres this brand about being punk and taking down capitalism and shit but your shirts are being sourced through what is essentially almost certainly slave/unfairly paid labor??? like am i crazy am i being unfair here or is that very hypocritical and not like…morally very sound. like my friend made the argument that where else is he supposed to get the shirts and kind of alluded to the whole ‘there is no ethical consumption under capitalism’ argument. he said we cant expect every leftist to be perfect but idk…just because that is true doesnt mean that we have to be actively contributing to the systemitself. and idk from what little i know about the clothing industry i KNOW there would be other ways to source shirts and stuff that would drive up manufacturing cost but actually be ethical ways to source them…. i just think the whole idea of having a brand built around destroying the establishment and saying ‘fuck capitalism’ then directly contributing to it is kinda fucked. like he donates a lot of profits but certainly the people who have to make those shirts never see them. idk my friend made me feel as though im being a bit morally righteous about it what do you think

can i ask your opinion on toxel and toxtricity? personally i cant find myself liking them, but i cant place why. toxel especially looks like it could be very endearing but i just cant get into its design, yknow?

While I like Toxtricity a lot, for reasons I'll get into in a bit, I'm not a huge fan of Toxel. I think I've mentioned this before, but personally I'm not a huge fan of baby Pokemon that lean into looking more like human babies instead of animal babies, and Toxel's "diaper" and distinctly non-salamander esq cheeks really don't do it for me.

But I'm also not big on it because it doesn't feel like it adds anything to the line conceptually. What does a baby-esq salamander have to do with the rest of the line being punk musicians? Because they're both loud? It just doesn't add anything, and I feel like Toxtricity could've stood on its own, or maybe even had an evo instead of the g-max or something.

Just from a design standpoint, the bit of electricity on the forehead is supposed to lead into a mohawk, but it looks really out of place here, as nothing else on the body really matches it. It uses white because Toxtricity has two forms with different colors, but this makes the palette a bit too monotone for its own good--it feels like a lot of the features blend into each other. A bright pink or something would've at least popped more without repeating one of the form colors. I like the expression, but aside from that, this one's mostly a miss for me.

Thankfully, things improve significantly when we get to Toxtricity, which has a great design. The punk look is a great theme and goes along well with the idea of it being a crested newt of some kind, and the colors pop nicely and convey the electric-typing well. I particularly like the body shape, which avoids becoming too human by making the torso and arms long while giving it relatively short legs. It also keeps the head and body flowing into each other instead of keeping them seperate like a lot of anthro designs would do.

I love the head region specifically; the way the mohawk flows down the head and then is complemented by the secondary color works great, especially with how the spikes on the head then flow down to match the direction of the mohawk. Good stuff.

My only real design complaints would be that there are maybe one too many details on the lower body. The leg stripes aren't needed, as there's already plenty of the secondary color on the chest and mohawk. Likewise, I could've done without the waist piece; maybe just have a few spikes directly connect to the torso there, which would keep the body from being too smooth while not feeling so busy.

The cords on the chest also feel like a bit much--both in the sense that they're detailed but also in the sense that they break up the underbelly color in an unpleasant way--but they're based off of actual guitar strings and I'm not sure where else you'd put them, plus the way they can strum them to generate electricity is neat, so I'll give that a pass.

The idea of this line having two forms, one based off an electric guitar and one based off a bass guitar, is a great idea. I'd say the execution is pretty nice too, changing up just enough details that the two look different enough but also clearly read as just two different forms.

Between the two, I think I prefer the amped more than the low key a little. Mostly because the bright yellow has better contrast against the purple than the low key's blue, and the overall look of the head and mohawk is a bit nicer. The cords look better on the low key however, both due to the placement and the way there's fewer of them, so they both have good things going for them.

The g-max is surprisingly good as well. I like how both colors are combined, which both accounts for both forms but also make it look appropriately powered-up. The crazy eye looks sick, and is appropriate considering this thing is effectively high off its own toxins, like a true rockstar.

Most importantly, though, I love that it's quadrupedal here, along with the weird salamander tongue and flatter feet. I don't mind the originals at all, but having a version of it that's a little more salamander-esq is a great way to handle the g-max, and it makes it look pretty threatening as well.

The only thing I don't like here--aside from the leg stripes, but those were on the originals anyway--is the waist piece again. The idea of a radio tower/tesla coil tail isn't bad per say, but the pink isn't working well with the blue and yellow because they're all similar shades compared to the much darker purple of the body. Having the tesla coils on there just feels too busy as well, and the tail feels like it needs to slant back at more of an angle to match the mohawk. In general, I'd make the tail area the dark purple, get rid of the spikes and the tesla coils, and just have the tower there. Or alternatively, run the mohawk down the body and have it jut out at the end to form the tower tail that way.

But yeah, as a whole, Toxtricity is great, with good forms and a neat design that has a clear concept and nice colors. My only issue with the line is that Toxel feels pointless, and possibly could've been dropped entirely; aside from that, these are some solid punk rock salamanders.

i used to be crazy in head over warm cute winter clothing snatcher, like scarves hats (especially those covering ears but not necessarily ushankas) sweaters..... as a way to, deal with the cold vanessa continuously inflicts onto the forest, and him. not to mention hes somewhat overexposed to it through having to directly contain it. i commonly see people associate him with fire warmth summer etc whatever but to be honest i dont find portraying her and vanessa as inherent opposites compelling. i suppose snatcher embracing his inner warmth is a sweet narrative to enact but personally i gravitated more towards accommodation for that cold / hurt and valuing his own comfort. but thats his clothing style

"some things dont feel like anything else" or whatever. so i cant really talk in depth about what defines the aesthetic of that part of his life, or the aesthetic of any thing really. i used to be super confused about what people on the internet mean by 'aesthetic of something' and then i briefly grasped it and now its lost again

Back when I started writing this i complained nonstop about how i didn't know anything about 80s music and im happy to say that is no longer true! I have listened to SO MUCH 80s music in the last month holy shit.

I already talked in the end notes about what music everyone is based on so I won't get into that here. Instead I'm gonna talk about the "soundtrack songs," or the songs that i insist on shoehorning into every scene. (Actually discussed with my sister A Lot about whether the songs are fun or meaningful or are clutter in different scenes and the jury is kinda still out on that. So would be interested to hear what people think!)

The most important songs in part one are probably Last Dance With Mary Jane and Dancing in the Dark. I'd always wanted Last Dance for Steve's crisis about being back in indiana. That's a song I listened to on LOOP writing that scene! I love tom petty so much--i feel like he has a unique sympathy for the characters he creates in his songs. They're very kind songs, and they feel very comforting, even when he's talking about ennui and dissatisfaction and heartbreak. Dancing in the Dark is dancing in the dark i literally cant even explain more. Perfect song. (Other good bruce songs for steve are Brilliant Disguise for Steve/Nancy and Independence Day for his daddy issues <3)

In part I think the major songs are Cyndi Lauper's Good Enough, which I brought into the scene to be another thing they don't have in common. The bus scene is a whole list of Shit They Don't Have In Common, and Good Enough is an answer to that question (if it's good enough for you it's good enough for me), but it's also a kinda depressing hint at Eddie's perspective on the fwb situation (if it's good enough for you it's good enough for me).

Every kid's breakfast order song! Dustin's is a 70s rock song and also a pun (i love dustin). Lucas' is a classic off my favorite Steve Wonder album. It's a little older (1980), so it's probably one his parents played when he was a kid. He sings it to Max in a wildly over the top way (just like he used to see his dad do for his mom) and she pretends hes so annoying but she loves it. (Lucas has the most flexible voice the the group btw he can do any genre). Will is playing a gay ass song by the replacements, one of the greatest of 80s alt rock. Mike is playing an electronic piece that nobody else likes (the icicle works were one hit wonders iirc). El is playing a 60s girl group (headed by the incomparable ronnie spector, who was also abused by her manager, like El was, even though that's not something El would know to associate her with). Max is listening to Talking Heads. She (and will) listen the most widely of any of the kids, but I think her heart lies with new wave/punk (again vs will who is a punk/alt rock kid). Eddie plays Iron Maiden. He's a twenty-something teenage dirtbag babey!

Downtown Lights by Blue Nile is the song I listened to while writing the party scene in nyc. I did not include it because it came out in 1989 which is not accurate :( Alternatively I chose Drive by The Cars for that scene, but I ended up not putting any lyrics in at all, because I thought it might just clutter the thing up. (But I think I left it on the playlist anyway because i listened to it so much lol)
