When I wrote yesterday's post on Five Nights of Snop Dog, I made a bit of an error in my research. See, though "Five Nights of Snop Dog" was an actual request received, it was actually fellow ripper NBGMusic who got it on his SoundCloud, not Chaze the Chat as I'd claimed. Well, as fate would have it, NBGMusic just so happens to be responsible one of the most well-known rips on the SiIvaGunner channel - and not only is it also tied to Snop Dog himself, its also tied to the glorious age of Montage Parody videos. And with Season 8 having finished an MLG event of its own just yesterday, it's as if the stars all aligned - I can think of no better time to cover we are number one but with outdated memes over it.

Now, the aforementioned magnificent 4/20 event was far bigger than usual for the channel, casting the net to not just cover weed-smoking jokes, but to cover the age of internet shitposting where it was at its most notorious - Montage Parodies. The years from 2012 to 2016 were absolutely FILLED with these, in a way that feels almost lost on the current internet generation, as very few seem to actually remember it fondly. Because like, it was all a bit stupid, wasn't it? Rage comics and impact font memes are remembered nostalgically, YouTube Poops are cherished to this day and continue to see prevalence both in general and on SiIvaGunner - we wouldn't be getting rips like Mr. 2​.​718281828459045235360287471352662497757247093699959574966967627724076630353547594571382178525166427427466391932003059921817413596629043572900334295260595630738132328627943490763233829880753195251019011573834187930702154089149934884167509244761460668082264800168477411853742345442 or Crompton Racing if there weren't people still enthusiastic for them. Montage Parodies were comparatively really short lived, and even back in 2016 SiIvaGunner channel itself didn't really touch them. Sure, we got rips with Smoke Weed Everyday as the joke from time to time, like with Ganja Man 9: Hash Blunt Hash (Shorty's Stage), but I think most people already saw the signs that MLG videos weren't really sticking around. Or at least, that's what *I* thought back in the day - evidently, the whole thing had just a little bit more juice left in it.

Because at the tail end of the channel's life, in September 2016, we received we are number one but with outdated memes over it. Sure, it wasn't the first We Are Number One rip on the channel, but it might as well have been - it landed right as the meme was taking off, and garnered views by the thousands in absolutely record time. For a decent while, it even was THE most viewed rip on the channel - and, funny enough, a 2017 Mel (that's me!) left a comment on the video befuddled over just how popular this MLG video was. Because, like, it's right there in the title - it's we are number one but with outdated memes over it, I thought we were all in agreement that Smoke Weed Everyday and "This is a certified hood classic" and Skrillex and all of that stuff wasn't funny anymore?

So then...why is it still so fucking good?

There's been a bit of a running joke with in the SiIvaGunner Discord (which you should join, by the way!) over how I actually hate this rip, or at least don't have positive feelings toward it. And I'll be honest - I hadn't really listened to it in a long time, and I think for a long time I was still a little bit fed up with MLG videos in general. I don't think they have any shot of becoming relevant again in the same way that YTPMV or rage comics do, ironic-or-not, but it was also kind of presumptuous to ascribe that same kind of obnoxiousness to we are number one but with outdated memes over it. Because sure, it's using outdated memes - but NBGMusic isn't using them in halfmeasures or with the intent to make the audio unlistenable. It's all playing to We Are Number One's melody and progression, which in of itself is honestly kind of novel these days - ever since we got the song's stems released in late 2016, most rips on the channel featuring the jokes have been full on arrangements with its instruments a la Chillin’ Like A Villain or We Are Number 4 (Golden). I love those rips as well, they're all incredibly fun takes on the song - but it's an entirely different flavor from how we are number one but with outdated memes over it goes about doing things.

Even though the title isn't lying, its definitely underselling the rip, it almost makes it sounds like a fucking MrMrMANGOHEAD video (Remember him? Shrek-face Mike Wazowski?). There's a lot of noise to be sure, but its all coordinated in really fun ways! I love the repeating "WHAT" samples playing as Robbie begins his lecturings in trickery, changing to samples shouting "HEY" in the next verse, ironically going against the lyrics' point of "not making a sound". And that's just what happens to the vocals - the main hook of the rip, of course, is how the iconic saxophone hook that plays inbetween the vocals is here matched with pitch-shifted Smoke Weed Everyday's, almost exactly like the aforementioned Ganja Man 9: Hash Blunt Hash (Shorty's Stage) - but its paired with sprinklings of memes tied to MLG parodies, like the legendary "MOM GET THE CAMERA", or of course bits and pieces from Skrillex music. I fucking love that in particular, actually: how traces of Skrillex's dubstep sound are heard in the rip from the very start, yet at 0:56 we're finally given full payoff with the iconic "YO SKRILL DROP IT HARD", leading to a full beat drop that somehow feels perfectly in tune with what We Are Number One is doing alongside it.

You know me - my favorite thing in rips is when they escalate, and though we are number one but with outdated memes over it stays within the same set of jokes throughout, its dedication to covering the *entire* We Are Number One with all of these memes means that it finds new ways to go about it for each segment. I may have been a bit frustrated back then, but in hindsight its easy to see just why this rip got as popular as it did, beyond just playing to the ongoing trend - its a pretty damn high-effort production for being part of a shitposting trend basically defined by being purposefully low-effort and obnoxious. In that sense, I suppose we are number one but with outdated memes over it is like a final hurrah for the age of Montage Parodies - right as we were all letting go of it, as the wild ride of 2016 was making everyone (most importantly YouTube itself) realize that the internet needed to be made a less toxic, less obnoxious place...we got one last jab at all the fun that these videos had to offer. And in turn, it wound up passing the torch to We Are Number One shitposting, beginning a new trend of channels spoofing existing meme music with their own edits and ideas, a trend you'll still see up and about today.

The internet all feels a lot more complicated today in its many corners - Twitter, Reddit, TikTok, YouTube, Discord and its Tenor GIFs, all sort of forming their own ideas of what is and isn't in vogue for shitposting anymore, all at each others' throats. For as obnoxious as Montage Parodies often were in hindsight...there's something so oddly nostalgic about how widespread they were - how EVERYONE deep in the online trenches seemed to just be enamored by these absolutely ridiculous videos. we are number one but with outdated memes over it brought people together over their stupidness for one last time, and for just a little while longer after that, We Are Number One did the same. And with yesterday's MLG day, with looking back on this rip in tow...I can't help but miss it all at least a little bit.

At one point, Maureen never thought she could fall in love with a client of Miller Labs — but that was before Lucretia came into her life, brilliant and witty and mysterious, and Maureen is hooked, drawn as is her nature to Lucretia and her secrets.

At another point, Maureen never thought she could fall out of love with Lucretia — and she doesn't, not exactly — but nevertheless, as the pair's dueling projects near completion, the weight of secrets and stubbornness weighs heavier and heavier.

were they ever married? no one's quite sure. are they divorced? i hope to convince you that they absolutely are, in a fic coming very very soon :)

I wrote most of this one just yesterday, and it occupies a very specific place on the hurt-comfort spectrum that I honestly don't know how to articulate 😭

As a kid my favourite font was Comic Sans because I liked how different and chill it looked compared to other fonts on the school computers. As a young teen my favourite font became Fang Song because not only did it have a sick name but it was also a simple clean font that looked good in an essay or a fanfic, especially at size 14. As an older teen Trebuchet became my favourite for writing essays and resumes because it's a clean sans-serif that was just different enough from Arial and Calibri to stand out. In my first year of college when I was taking graphic design my favourite fonts became Bodoni and Didot simply because of how cute they looked and how they fit into almost every assignment I did (don't worry I dropped out and have taste now). While still in college under a different major my favourite font was Amaranth because it looked cute stylish and clean. My most recent favourite font is still Gothic 821 Condensed both because of my obsession with fo1/fnv but also because it's bold, striking and clean, and like if Impact font didn't get meme-ified to hell and back over the last 20 years.

OK i do care abt font tbh, i usually write in baskerville in google docs lol, size 9 or 10 maybe, i change it to 8 when i read through it all; occasionally i will change the doc into a completely different font like comic sans or something lol just so that it like. looks different + therefore hopefully gonna make me spot mistakes or things to change idk? but yeah baskerville my friend baskerville, it looks like this on my phone:

3. What is your writing ritual and why is it cursed?

I already answered this one but actually i guess i can say a bit more abt sort of how id go about sitting down to write, whether i 'warm up' or not or whatever. sometimes i might start off with typing up some handwritten stuff if ive got some left to do, before i actually write anything new, and that's like my warm up i guess. and i will keep reading through my work frequently of course, although sometimes you also have to take a little break or pause from it, because you end up having read it over so many times that it loses its impact; but if you leave it and come back to it in a few days or whatever your time scale is and read it all through from the start, then it hopefully feels fresh again and you start to really enjoy the bits you wrote again.

22. How organized are you with your writing? Describe to me your organization method, if it exists. What tools do you use? Notebooks? Binders? Apps? The Cloud?

hmm, i wouldn't say i'm like...disorganised exactly, but idk how organised i am either......when i write by hand i use like a5 size notebooks and black biro, and when i type it up i use google docs... hghgffj in my google drive i do have a lot of Untitled Documents lol, mostly notes/planning for fics. (and lately for shorter fics sometimes i don't actually think of a title until it’s finished and i'm uploading it to ao3, so it just stays as untitled document in my drive... oops..)

my document full of notes for a possible ocelhira fic is almost at 3k words or something (plus some scribbles in my real notebook) and it’s extremely messy.. i live in hope of someday writing it,but here's a snippet from my notes for now:

my notes like this on my phone tend to be just. lower case free from punctuation no speech marks just vibes. tends to be a mixture of more polished sentences that i will probably end up using in the final thing, as well as looser bits and actual like. notes to myself of outlines / plans / settings etc. i can't seem to find my notes for 'awakening', i guess i deleted them, but it would have been good to show my notes for a fic i posted recently so you can see what made it into the final thing and what didn't, ah well.

40. Please share a poem with me. I need it.

I already answered this but I'll go for another poem by the same author, Wilfred Owen, since there are several I really like by him. (His most well-known, and for good reason, is Dulce et decorum est, but i feel like that's the obvious choice with him, so I'm avoiding choosing that one lol. But it is very good..)

My Thoughts On... #40 - Memes 😆😸📈

A huge majority of people worldwide are familiar with memes. Whether they be images with text on them from top to bottom, mainly with Impact font, or images with text above, mainly in Arial font. Some memes can be in the form of video footage. I.E. TikTok trends. I don't know, basically anything can be a meme. Including the Grimace Shake from McDonald's. But anyway, I'd like to explain my thoughts on memes, as in images with text. So, I've been making memes online for over a decade. On many meme sharing sites such as Cheezburger, ImgFlip, Memedroid, and iFunny. Of course, some people have come across my memes that I post here on Tumblr every Monday. Plus, I'll also post memes on Reddit. Now, a majority of my memes are based off of scenarios that I create in my mind that I assume are relatable, which up until now, I realized that it's become sort of an issue because people believe that those memes are based on true events, which they're not. So, now when I make a meme, it will have to be based on a true event, or something that's clearly relatable. Unless it's on ImgFlip. Then I can just label it as "not a true story". Otherwise, the readers might misinterpret it as fact. Problem is, there's nothing about true events or relatable situations that spark anyone's interests anymore. There are so many memes that involve the same topic. Some of them even have a similar caption. Also, not a lot of true events, which are based mainly on my personal experiences, I feel comfortable sharing with the public eye. I know you can relate to that. Well, anyway, those are my thoughts on memes. I hope you find this post worth checking out, and please be sure to favorite, reblog, and/or reply. If you want to, of course.

8. I'll admit, I don't like that kind of meme. But since you asked, I'll give you a one-line one that sums up a minor historical character:

9. I think the inevitable biggest thing that would happen with fan merch / art for Heresiarch would be weird Christianizations, which is entirely fair to be honest. Like, the Church of The Sepulcher is based on Christianity in many respects, but it distinctly is not such a thing. For instance, the martyrdom of the first saints is considered very important, and their sacrifice is recognized as extremely valuable, but they didn’t die for the sins of the world, and none of them were crucified. This is kinda important on the margins of my writing - I have to remember, for instance, that characters would never reference a holy war as a crusade, because the word is a direct reference to the Crucifixion. Imagining a bunch of Sepulcherite characters wearing crosses is pretty funny as a result. Honestly, imagining merch for Heresiarch is pretty hard because it’s kind of macabre in general. The best I could do would be a t-shirt with a chibi drawing of Manguyaat reciting the central teachings of Keninism:

“The first principle is this: mankind’s pleasures are fleeting; mankind’s pains are eternal.

The second principle is this: all the gods are responsible for the suffering of mankind, for they have made the state of the world.

The third principle is this: the Heavens have nothing by which to truly recompense mankind.

I think that’d be pretty funny.

16. I don't have a good handle on any image editing software, so you're going to have to use your imagination for this one. It's also about a WIP that I haven't really told many people about yet, so the people who will even vaguely understand this are about three or four. You're going to imagine an image of a very tall, half naked man who is so pale as to be luminescent, as if constantly caught in the light of a flash camera, with a bulbous, knobby head and knotted black hair smiling at you. Now in massive white Impact font over that image is the phrase "WHEN THE PALE STRANGERS - WHEN THE PALE STRANGERS HAVE NO SHADOWS" and layered over that in more impact font in "I AM A NORMAL STRANGER WITH NORMAL DOGS - COME CLOSER." You got that? Good.

ok I am interested in hearing about the mouse novel you started in 3rd grade

For anyone wondering what this is about, I mentioned this story a couple times in the tags, I don’t even remember on what posts lol. It took a minute to dig it up but I finally found it, wasn't even on my computer, it was on my backup drive lol. I’m gonna liveblog my reactions to it. Probably gonna be a long post, so

It's bad. It's very bad. I thought I started it in like 3rd or 4th grade or something but I found the earliest version in my 2009 folder which was 6th grade for me 😭. I don't think I was that bad at writing in 6th grade but it's really very bad. We're talking worse than My Immortal bad. It's possible I started it earlier and moved it to more recent folders over time (cause I took like 3 years to write like 6 pages lmao) but this is worrisome. I also found updated versions in my 2010 and 2011 folders which went up to 8 pages whoo! (But somehow only 2k words for the longest versions??) The "last modified" date is worthless cause I've moved it between like 3 computers and 5 flash drives/backups so all the versions say 2017.

That being said, there is a very marked improvement in the writing quality over those 8 pages that I'm almost proud of. That last page is frankly perfectly readable as a novel written for 8-12 year olds, though the story structure still needs a ton of work.

Oh shit, I just dug into the file metadata and found out it was created in May 2007, so 4th grade! Whew! I have an excuse for how bad it is. The newest version was last modified in April 2011 so that totally explains why it's so much better towards the end. Huh, just noticed I actually updated the intro in the most recent version, which makes it slightly more palatable lmao.

Well now that I've finished liveblogging my detour down memory lane, what the hell's the story about?

A town called Miceville exists in the lowest sub-basement of a human apartment building. The main character (named Cheddar Squigee) gets himself into a predicament, lost in the wilderness due in part to his own bad decisions and in part because of his older brother's dumbassery. Hopelessly stranded with no hope for rescue while his family is worried sick looking for him, Cheddar goes on an adventure with ghost pirates to find some treasure and save them from their curse (because I’d just watched Pirates of the Caribbean), before eventually reuniting with his family. I only got as far as the “he got stranded” bit with the beginnings of lore for the ghost pirates.

Some highlights from the story:

I think the very idea of a mouse story came from me reading some Geronimo Stilton books around that time. Look them up if you haven’t heard of them, they’re great books in my memory from when I was like 10 so I’m sure they’ll hold up over a decade later /s

There’s an “I didn’t know you could read” reference to Harry Potter

The entire ghost pirates thing is obviously lifted from PotC which I think is just hilarious

There’s a Clip Art pic of a mouse on one of the pages :)

The entire thing is written in Comic Sans font except for two parts which are 1) The chapter titles which are in Impact (that meme font fyi) and 2) The main title which is in the old MS Office 2003 WordArt lmao

Some lowlights:

I was a Brand Shill™, for Lamborghini of all things

I made Cheddar’s brother a major dick and a dumbass, which absolutely was not at all inspired by my relationship with my IRL brother, not one bit. There is nothing for a therapist to unpack there.

I don’t know why I specified the mouse city was in the sub-basement of a human apartment. The humans were never supposed to make an appearance or have any impact to the story. I could just have easily made it a full mouse world like Redwall or whatever.

Everything happens so fast (what is pacing and plot structure?) so if I finished the story at the current pace I don’t think it would break 30k words, not even a novel.

Anyway, thank you so much for giving me an excuse to take a couple of hours looking at this crappy story I wrote over a decade ago. No, no one can read it it’s still very bad.

About Page #01: Aesthetically Pleasing

This is my first tumblr code, and one I have been working on for well over 2 months now. It started out as a code for WoX, then to a tumblr page, and then was put on hold. But, my next big step was joining @codingcabin and meeting all the wonderful and talented theme makers of tumblr. They might not know it, but they inspired me so much, and I look up to and admire so many of them!
