how do their backstories change? like mitsuri literally got rejected for marriage but im gonna assume shes not at marrying age yet- she has a happy family and all, how would that change? or like mui and yui how would they have survived? or like himejima, his religious orphanage got slaughtered. or...how did kanao get out of her situation?

know where some dont change- gonna assume giyuu's sister got slaughtered still, or that sanemi and genya had that whole thing involving their mom. shinobu and kanae got rescued by kanao and aoi i think you said, shinjuro saved iguro from the entire demonic cult, and uzui i bet just left the ninja squad earlier than canon.

okay so i've been waffling on how to answer this for a while now, because originally i was just going to give you every idea i had on character backstories, but now i've started plotting out Actual Fics for some of these? so you're not getting all of the details, but i'll let you have some stuff.

this isn't every character, and it's not even every hashira or everyone in the friend group because i haven't fully plotted out everyone's history yet, so :/ also some characters will have a single line of backstory and others will have whole ass essays. i have thought more about some characters than others and i will not feel shame for having favorites within my own au

without further ado, though, here's some

CHARACTER BACKGROUNDS

uh, general spoiler warning for anime-onlys, although my blog is kind of a walking spoiler warning, so apologies on that front. also spoilers for like . my own au? this is kind of a huge deep dive into the background so.. idk man, this is a lot. i kind of went crazy with this

THE KAMADO SIBLINGS

so, obviously, their story starts out the same-ish: with the entire kamado family dying, nezuko being turned into a demon, the two of them being saved by the water hashira and told to train under urokodaki sakonji. just, the water hashira who helps them is makomo instead of giyuu

i haven't actually decided on what happens with tanjirou's final selection, because what happens there heavily informs what happens during giyuu and sabito's final selection. the big question is "does tanjirou kill the hand demon?" if he doesn't, then he at least puts up a good fight before fleeing.

tanjirou goes on a couple missions, meets yushirou and tamayo, receives his task to get blood from the twelve kidzuki, and goes off to try doing that!

at some point he encounters yoriichi (possibly from directions given to him from our favorite demon doctor?) and yoriichi starts teaching him Actual sun breathing

also at some point, tanjirou meets and befriends the rest of the future hashira. i don't really know what the kamaboko squad's adventures look like without the crazy of canon

according to my timeline i have (which is admittedly subject to change), tanjirou becomes a hashira about a year after becoming a demon slayer at the age of 16 after he kills the former lower moon one

several years later, nezuko conquers the sun! and tanjirou, no longer confident in his ability to protect her from muzan and just generally worried about her getting hurt on his continuously more difficult missions, sends her off to go follow yoriichi around

nezuko's still kind of out of it at this point so she doesn't really fight this decision like she might've if she were more aware. she goes with yoriichi and the kamado siblings will spend the next, eh, three-ish years not seeing each other

nezuko eventually does properly regain consciousness and starts sending letters to tanjirou, but eventually stops once she sort of processes the fact that her brother basically pawned her off on some guy. she's ignoring him out of spite now and they haven't talked in literal years

tanjirou meanwhile takes no time at all in cementing himself as The Strongest Hashira, hands down. the others look to him as the pillar of the hashira (heh) and he's basically in charge of them. he handles this leadership role pretty well at first, but as the years go by it really starts wearing him down. he's very tired but he has so much he has to do

and then tanjirou finds two boys at the bottom of mount fujikasane and things start looking up again

THE RENGOKU FAMILY

instead of ruka getting ill and dying, shinjurou gets sick and dies!

shinjurou probably would've made it through his sickness, but he decided to literally work himself to death and performed his hashira duties while ill, which eventually resulted in his untimely death

after his death, ruka ends up picking up the blade and becoming the flame hashira so the seat doesn't remain vacant. she spends her time not slaying demons training senjurou and kyoujurou

senjurou, as the eldest son, feels a lot more pressure to become a slayer and works his little butt off. it takes a lot of hard work, but he eventually succeeds his mama as flame hashira. according to my timeline, he becomes a slayer at 12 and a hashira at 17

after senjurou's promotion, ruka retires and devotes all her time to training kyoujurou. senjurou helps whenever he can! it takes no time at all for kyoujurou to surpass both of them in skill

at some point, kyoujurou also starts training mitsuri on the side before she just starts joining him when he trains with his mom and brother

the two of them go to final selection together and also at the same time as giyuu and sabito!

THUNDER BREATHERS

so zenitsu spends a good year and a half training with kuwajima before he takes final selection and becomes a slayer at 16. he makes friends with the other future hashira and gets dragged into fighting some pretty high level demons against his will

zenitsu becomes a hashira at around the same time as tanjirou, when he's 17 ish. he's not really about it, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

meanwhile, kaigaku . used to live with gyoumei before he did a really stupid thing and got a bunch of kids killed. and he ran away and ended up getting taken in by kuwajima when he was, oh, 12 ish??

zenitsu ended up visiting and basically imprinting on this kid, doing everything in his power to help kaigaku become the best thunder breather there ever was! he's not the best teacher, but he manages to get kaigaku to be able to use total concentration constant by the time he goes off to his final selection

tengen also shows up at some point and tries (and fails) to become zenitsu's tsuguko. the position is taken, though, even if kaigaku's not actually even a demon slayer yet

kaigaku participates in final selection the same year as giyuu and sabito (and company) and when he passes he gets instated as zenitsu's official tsuguko

KANAO & AOI

aoi is actually the one to get kanao out of her situation! and the two of them run away to become demon slayers together!

aoi has her final selection several years before kanao (and company), with the tokitou twins

she becomes a demon slayer and quickly realizes that she kind of fucking hates it, but unlike in canon, she has no fallback plan so she just has to commit to the life of a demon slayer

kanao eventually becomes a slayer too (although aoi told her she really didn't have to if she didn't want to) and the two start working together on missions!

uhh shenanigans happen, i have no idea what stuff occurs in the several years where the kamaboko squad is kicking

kanao becomes a hashira first out of the two of them, at the same time as tanjirou when she's 17

aoi becomes a hashira maybe a year or two later

the two of them set up the butterfly estate, help out sumi, naho, and kiyo, and then later also suma, makio, and hinatsuru

also around the same time they save the kochou sisters from a demon and basically adopt them

INOSUKE.

inosuke is inosuke is inosuke. not a whole lot changes with him other than him getting older

my only real note on inosuke is that at some point he finds out about his mom's history with douma. i do not know how.

THE TOKITOU TWINS

when muichirou posits the idea of becoming demon slayers, yuuichirou doesn't tell him no

the two take a month to learn mist breathing and then another month to kill a lower moon. both of them are offered the position of hashira, but mui turns it down so yuui gets the position

this does mean that yuuichirou has been hashira for the longest out of the current roster. eight whole years as a hashira, from when he was 12 to when he's 20

(edit: lol i forgot about makomo. i always forget about makomo.... yuui's been a hashira the second longest after makomo who's been a hashira for 11 years!)

muichirou is basically an honorary hashira, but doesn't want the rank

THE SHINAZUGAWA BROTHERS

when genya's 15 and sanemi's 8 (yeowch, finally writing down their ages for that makes it kinda hurt worse), sanemi kills their demon mom and genya takes it poorly, calling sanemi a murderer in a fit of anger. sanemi runs away and genya has no idea where he ends up

on the genya side of things, he spends a good year doing nothing but looking for his little brother before he kinda gets recruited by the demon slayer corps who offer to help him look for his brother

genya becomes a slayer and becomes a hashira around the same time as tanjirou (and company) and he sort of. gives up on looking for his brother because he's pretty sure that sanemi's better off without someone like genya chasing after him

on the sanemi side of things, he runs away after his tragic backstory moment and just kills random demons until he's found and taken in by masachika. he finds out his brother's a hashira and comes up with a really convoluted plan to apologize to genya about killing their mom after sanemi becomes a hashira

he learns wind breathing and takes final selection at the same time as giyuu, sabito, and co.

and then sanemi finds out that in the week he was off participating in final selection, masachika got killed by a lower moon

so he's in a ... rough headspace at the start of the story. which is at least partially why he's . like that

THE KOCHOU SISTERS

shinobu and kanae lose their family to demons when they're 12 and 13 respectively. they're taken in by kanao and aoi and move into the butterfly estate! they also start training under both of them

(this isn't really a background thing, but in case i never do anything with it, i have an idea of a line between kanao and kanae when they first meet where kanao asks for kanae's name and then goes "oh, that's kind of funny. because my name's kanao. they're pretty similar, aren't they?" and it helps calm kanae down a little)

kanae takes final selection when she's 14 and becomes kanao's tsuguko

shinobu is discouraged from taking final selection because she really doesn't need to and also she's kind of scrawny so it might be too tough for her, but she goes anyways a year after kanae and in the same year as giyuu, sabito, and co

UROKODAKI'S (OTHER) STUDENTS

makomo passes final selection when she's 12, narrowly avoiding getting killed by the hand demon, and then she becomes a hashira two years later when she's 14

makomo is 17 when she comes across tanjirou and nezuko and sends the both of them to urokodaki

sabito is taken in by urokodaki maybe a year or so after tanjirou passes final selection. sabito is 9 ish

tomioka tsutako dies(?) when giyuu is 13 and after running away from the people he was sent to live with, he comes into urokodaki's care

giyuu and sabito go off to final selection when they're both 15 and it doesn't go… great.

and that's all you get!!!! maybe i'll write more backstory stuff someday but this post is already kinda fuckin long as hell

Messiah: Genya no Koku [Movie Review]

Another quick review I wanted to do. So I got to see this twice and I got to theorise with one of my friends after both reviewings and we were both going crazy with fanfic ideas after this.

In true Messiah style, I watched this and fell right back into the hell pit that is Messiah. I love this series. I don’t think I’ll ever leave it. But that’s what DV does to you xD

The Story

The story is set just after Tsukuyomi where Itsuki agrees to trading himself in so they could get Ariga back. During the transfer, Ariga makes it back to HQ safely but Itsuki, along with Saryut, goes missing. They have been captured by the real Nightmare and he makes them do a little treasure hunt before they can escape his clutches. Meanwhile the rest of the boys, including Suku, try to track them down, and save them. But past actions make a reappearance.

We also have a side story of Sakura having to protect a Prince with the help of his shady bodyguard. And they also end up being connected to the main plot.

Entering SPOILER TERRITORY!

*This is a huge series so I don’t recommend you jump into this one without scene the previous work from it*

Spoiler Story

So Itsuki and Saryut wake up in Nightmare’s Lair and they are trapped inside with a bunch of people who, one way or another, want to take revenge on either Itsuki or Saryut. So they attempt to kill them but obviously our boys are more than capable and handle the entire situation on their own. But they keep one of them alive. However, Nightmare kills the man’s daughter for failing to kill Itsuki and Saryut and for siding with our boys. Itsuki and Saryut stop the man from committing suicide and persuade him that ‘you should take revenge on Nightmare because he’s the one that killed your daughter, not us.’ So Nightmare lets them move from room to room, but in each room is a hint or a scene that reminds Itsuki/Saryut of something terrible they’ve done in the past. And they cannot move onto the next room without facing what happened and explaining that terrible scene/situation.

While they are trying to get out of there, Sakura (on one side), and Suku & Doctor X (on the other side) are trying to find their boys. Eventually they find the same trail and the same hints, end up meeting up, and they momentarily join forces so they can get their boys back.

We also have this Prince who Hinamori and Kogura are in charge of protecting a prince, but after being caught transporting the Prince to safety, shots are fired and the Prince runs away, even leaving his bodyguard behind. Turns out the Prince is also wanting revenge of Itsuki (for killing/assassinating his father) and that Nightmare had invited him to watch their stream (of them going through the rooms), and he eventually makes his way to the location of the boys.

In a horrible twist though, when Saryut and Itsuki make it to the last room, they’re both knocked out. Saryut knocks of Itsuki after making a deal with Nightmare behind Itsuki’s back. And Saryut is then knocked out by Nightmare. When the Prince makes it to the location, he revenge shoots Itsuki (who has a bag over his head), but turns out it was his bodyguard who Nightmare had wrapped in Itsuki’s clothing and put a bag over. Nightmare enjoys that fact that he tricked the Prince to kill his only true friend and is reveling in the fact that the Prince has now actually fall into a Real Nightmare (the entire theme of the movie is that death is not the nightmare, living is the real nightmare).

Itsuki wakes up after being knocked out and Nightmare reveals himself. He was actually the guy they decided not to kill right at the very beginning! He just pretended to be someone else. Itsuki wants to know why. Nightmare reveals that he is actually the Prince’s older brother, and that when Itsuki killed their father, their father actually had all his child heirs and child relatives locked up; with his dying breath their father had hit a switch that gassed and killed all the children. Nightmare’s daughter was one of them. So he wanted revenge on Itsuki.

Although Itsuki does blame himself for all those children dying (and still has PTSD/nightmares/flashbacks from it), it’s actually revealed that the father/King was using the children for his own sick experiments --> he wanted to create people who couldn’t feel any pain (turns out Saryut’s group was helping to conduct those experiments). And when Itsuki found the King, he actually decided not to shoot because the King was threatening to turn the switch on (to gas the children) if Itsuki did shoot. But the guards in the palace came bombarding in and one of those gun shots hits the King. So as a last ‘I will not go down alone’ sick selfish way, he pressed the switched and killed them all.

However, it is very important to note that only the audience knows the truth. Itsuki never reveals to Nightmare, to Saryut, nor to anyone what really happened. He just purely and honestly feels it was his fault all those children died.

So now that Nightmare has Itsuki alone, and Nightmare himself was one of the past experiments (and successful) who can feel no pain, he asks Itsuki to fight him til one of them dies. Unfortunately, Nightmare gets the upper hand because of his lack of feeling, and just before he shoots Itsuki flat in the face, Ariga walks in!

Ariga literally woke up, quickly found out what happened, and got his ass over to save Itsuki! Together they kill Nightmare and walk away, with 2 or 3 bullets in them each xD but thank god they survived!

Suku also finds Saryut in the very first room Itsuki/Saryut woke up in and helps him out. Saryut asks why someone like Suku wanted to help save him, claiming that Suku usually doesn’t care for anyone else. Suku replies ‘because it would be so boring without you,’ and they leave.

That’s all the main points!!

Comments

☆ I absolutely loved the plot of this story! I loved all the twists! I absolutely loved this trapped building/room theme! I absolutely LOVED the twist with the Nightmare reveal, switching Itsuki for his bodyguard, the Prince shooting his bodyguard, Ariga running in at the last final minute. Every single reveal was amazing and I was just like ‘OMG!!!’

☆ I absolutely loved how Hinamori and Kogure’s friendship and trust grew! There were so many scenes and moments in this movie that they kept hidden from Ichijima! They were both like ‘lets not tell Ichijima,’ many times. Their friendship is getting so good!

☆ I absolutely loved seeing this vulnerable side of Suku. He’s trying not to care for Saryut but it’s so obvious that he does care! Even Doctor X says ‘it’s unlike you to care about/trying to find someone,’ and he always claims ‘I’d be bored if he wasn’t around’ or something like that but YOU CARE! YOU CARE!!!

☆ There’s a scene where Hina and Kogure are in a dark piping room, and I just saw the sexual tension go everywhere!! There’s one moment

☆ Unfortunately, I figured out straight away who Nightmare was. But this was from pure luck and pure random thoughts. Because you don’t hire Namioka Kazuki for a simple role! He never has a simple role! He is such a popular and well known actor! As soon as he popped up as this ‘poor guy wanting revenge’, my brain instantly went ‘Namioka never plays small roles. He always has a main role. He always plays a bad guy too,’ so when it’s revealed that he’s Nightmare, I was like ‘I KNEW IT!!’

☆ I adored the opening scene where we had a badass female murdering some mad scientist. It did give many fangirls hope that we were going to have a badass female (finally) in Messiah. But alas she ends up committing suicide in the end, and Hina and Kogure find her body.

☆ I love, love, love that they kept the bathroom for this movie too! We still have HQ at the bathhouse! And we still had some bathhouse scenes! There is a hilarious bathhouse scene with Kuroko, Ichijima and the bodyguard, Kuromatsu, just after they catch Kuromatsu betraying his prince somewhat. And Ichijima is not impressed and has this ‘-___-’ expression on his face while Kuromatsu is trying to defend himself. Also Kuroko splashes water in this scene and Ichi doesn’t flinch at all! I was giggling so hard at this scene! Also, while I don’t particularly like Ichi, I have to admit that the actor has kept his body in amazing shape! His chest and torso looked so damn good in that scene!!!! I was dying xD

☆ Apparently the Prince and the Bodyguard are going to stay in the series. But so far, I think they’ve had a lukewarm welcome. The Prince is a totally dick to his bodyguard, but all of a sudden cares for him at the end, and the bodyguard was very cold towards the Prince; for most of the film, he said ‘it’s just business’ but then he tries to save the Prince? So right now what we know about them is not much, and it’s also very all over the place. So we’ll see...

☆ I absolutely adored some of the action scenes in this! I think the first fighting scene (Saryut and Itsuki VS the revengers), and the final scene with Itsuki/Ariga and Nightmare were very well shot!!

☆ I also, as I always do, loved the opening theme song and sequence!! I absolutely adored the colours and effects that they used this time around!

☆ There are many moments in this movie where Itsuki and Saryut have to face what they and what their group have done to people. And I absolutely loved how both of them felt justified in their actions but where then condemning the other’s actions. There’s a beautiful moment/line from Saryut (to Itsuki) where he says ‘just because you were told to (do it), you think you’re in the right (for your actions)’ and it was a really powerful line and moment.

☆ I thought this one was such a good, high quality production. The colouring was great, the cinematography was great, the effects were great, the fighting scenes were great, some of the dialogue was gold. I thought this was probably the best produced Messiah movie we’ve had! Everything aesthetically pleased me!

☆ Speaking of effects!! Fucking Hinamori is BADASS. His very first scene is him and Kogure trying to meet the Prince and get him to safety but obviously terrorists turn up, and there’s also a sniper of a far off building. But Hinamori can find/see where the sniper is, so every time the snipe took a shot, Hinamori moved ever so slightly and DODGED the bullet! EVERY TIME he so easily and so smoothly DODGED the bullets! I absolutely LOVED this moment! I also loved his posture and body language as he dodged the bullets. Hina looked so fucking kool!!

☆ There’s another comedy gold scene, where Ichijima suggests something (not so nice), and Kuroko immediately got his green plastic slipper out and smacked Ichi over the head! Ichi’s hair spiked up but Ichi kept him ‘-_____-’ face and continued his lines. I was dying of laughter.

☆ Another adorable scene was right at the very end as Itsuki and Ariga walk/limp out, after killing Nightmare, and Itsuki had a very emotional moment towards the end and was in tears. So as they walked out, Ariga was like ‘by the way.... why are you crying?’ and Itsuki’s like ‘I ain’t crying!’ and it was such an adorable moment that I couldn’t help but giggle in happiness and amusement xD

☆ As I hadn’t seen the previous stage, it was so weird for me to see Kuroko as the leader and in Ichijima’s leader coat!

☆ Upon my first viewing, I had no idea Ruka (the Prince) was MALE until he took his turban off! He has very girly features that I thought for the first 30 minutes or so that he was actually a girl!! I was so surprise, I was like ‘a-WAH?!’ xD

☆ Ichi is still keeping secrets in this movie. Throughout there is a card with an ‘S’ on it, but even when Kuroko asks, Ichi just says ‘now isn’t the right time for people to know.’ UGHHHH fuck you Ichi!!!

☆ Towards the beginning of the movie, Itsuki has a dream where Ariga betrays him and points a gun to him and pulls the trigger. I was losing my shit in my seat the first time around!!

FanFic Ideas!

Me and my friend had so many dang fanfic ideas going around while watching this!! But the main two I had:

☆ There is a scene where Hina and Kogure are in a dark, pipping area, and Kogure lightly comments ‘I hope Itsuki is okay...’, and I was immediately thinking ‘Hina get angry! Ask ‘Itsuki? What about me?’ and kiss him!!!’. They were SUPER close during that scene too. Also this scene is split into two parts in the movie; the first part, it’s still day time, but when we come back to this scene, it’s night, and my brain was like ‘I bet I can guess how they passed the time there mwahahaha’ xD

☆ Another scene is when Suku first finds out Saryut has been taken and is trying to find out where he is. Doctor X comments ‘it’s not like you to care about someone else’ and my brain was like ‘ARGHHHH THEY LOVE EACH OTHER!!!’. AND at the end when Saryut is like ‘why did you come and save me?’ and Suku replies ‘it’d be boring without you’, I was DYING in my seat!! ARGH!!!!

And that’s all! I’m super excited for the dvd and I hope many of you get a chance to watch this movie! It was great!

Okay so I just realized that I’m more obsessed with Kaz x Nikolai than I’d previously thought???

Because like

- Kaz being so completely entranced by Sturmhond’s cunning nature when he’d helped them during the whole issue with Van Eck

- He was (barely) keeping his emotions in check the whole time

-Kaz taking Inej’s announcement that she’s going to start going out with Nina in stride because that morning he’d received a mysterious letter that showered him in compliments and was only signed ‘S’

-He and Sturmhond writing letters back and forth for months

-Kaz slowly becoming captivated by the charming, witty words on the paper and the loopy ‘S’ that he now knows stands for ‘Sturmhond’

-The Dregs noticing how Kaz is constantly distracted and is caught daydreaming with a small smile on his face

-The Dregs breaking into Kaz’s office when he’s out and rifling through the drawers of his desk until they find tons and tons of letters stashed away, all of them neat and kept safe and close to his heart

-Kaz almost having a heart attack when Sturmhond finally asks to meet in person, by the docks

-“Why do you look more dressed up than usual, Kaz???” Nina will demand playfully as she and Inej cuddle on the couch. “You got a hot date???”

-No reply

-Kaz’s heart relocating to his throat when he finds Sturmhond leaning against the wall with a bouquet of flowers in his hand

-Flowers that he gives to Kaz

-Finding out that Sturmhond is also uncomfortable taking off his gloves

-Kaz being shocked when he finds out that Sturmhond booked them a dinner at a super fancy restauraunt

-”How do you have this much money??? Aren’t you a pirate????”

-”I have my ways”

-Kaz growing increasingly flushed as Sturmhond compliments him shamelessly at the table for two, shocked at how completely at ease he is around a notorious criminal and conman

-Getting into a heated but friendly debate on which country would win if the whole world went to war

-Kaz is all for Shu Han and their advanced weaponry, but Nikolai is (surprise, surprise!) firmly supporting Ravka and their Second Army

-Kaz being a little sad when they finally part ways, growing even more flustered when Sturmhond takes his hand and kisses his gloved knuckles, bowing before disappearing off into the night

-Kaz standing there, star-struck and staring in the direction Sturmhond had gone for ten whole minutes before heading back to the Slat

-The Dregs COMPLETELY noticing the vase full of flowers on Kaz’s desk the next morning

- Kaz and Sturmhond hanging out constantly, growing closer and closer until Kaz isn’t sure he’d be able to go a day without that charming smile and those witty remarks

- Kaz missing him terribly for the long months in which he has to go away.

-”Pirate stuff” Sturmhond says. “A guy’s got to make a living somehow.”

-Kaz is suspicious, but his loneliness distracts him from the half-assed excuses

-Sturmhond telling Kaz all of these fantastic tales of his voyages at sea, all of them sounding realistic except for the one about the legendary Sun Summoner, which Kaz just scoffs and rolls his eyes at.

-In return, Kaz telling Sturmhond about his most daring heists, and Sturmhond is shocked when he finds that it was the Dregs who’d broken into the Ice Court.

-”That was you?!?!???!!!!??”

- After several months Kaz finally opening up about why he’s uncomfortable taking off his gloves when they hold hands and refuses to hug or kiss

- Sturmhond taking off his gloves in front of Kaz to show him the scars from the ninchevo’ya transformation.

-Several months after that Kaz “Dirtyhands” Brekker is caught by the rest of the Dregs sitting on the stoop of the Slat holding hands with Sturmhond and kissing him. None of them have gloves on.

-Kaz catching on that Sturmhond isn’t actually who he says he is when he catches him going to a Grisha for his face to be tailored

-Kaz being mad a first for being lied to but then realizing how desparate Sturmhond is to keep him

-”Why don’t you just tell him the truth, Nikolai?” the Grisha tailor will say as Kaz watches through the window and listens in through the cracks.

- “I can’t-” Nikolai’s voice breaks. “I can’t lose him. If Kaz realizes who I really am, he’ll hate me. I…I think I’m in love with him.”

-Kaz staggering home and refusing to leave his room when the Dregs knock on his door

-He doesn’t come out even when Nikolai comes knocking on the door the next day to pick him up for their daily noontime date

-Kaz refuses to see Nikolai for a week, but every day he keeps coming, and every day the Dregs still let him inside

-Because they know that Nikolai needs Kaz and Kaz needs Nikolai

-Kaz not responding as Nikolai stands on the other side of his door and begs to be let in

-”Did I do something wrong? Kaz, please talk to me!” Softer, he’d murmur. “I miss you.”

-Then one day Kaz opens the door

-They have a long private talk about it, and eventually Kaz is able to forgive him for lying.

-He’s also able to wrap his mind around the fact that someone loves him. Romantically.

-He even whispers “I love you, too” because by this point they’ve been dating for a year or so and there’s no point in lying to himself

-Nikolai stops going to the tailor and begins to indulge Kaz, spoiling him rotten

-He also seems to be adamant about paying for everything

-”Who’s the king here? Besides, all that money isn’t your own, anyway.”

-Kaz doesn’t argue

- For the next couple of years, the couple spends their time between Kerch and Ravka

-Nikolai being accepted as one of the Dregs and getting his tattoo because he might as well since he’s there literally all the time

-The whole big palace and little palace taking a loving to Kaz despite his rough exterior, getting into a hardcore competition to see who can make him smile

-That ability seems to only belong to Nikolai and the Dregs

-The two of them sharing a bed in Kaz’s tiny, homey room or in Nikolai’s extravagant chambers

-Kaz attending dinners and balls and galas with Nikolai, the two of them always arm in arm and holding hands under the table

-Ravka seems totally okay with having their king marry a man.

-Nikolai taking Kaz on long voyages at sea with his pirate crew

-One day they’re in the royal gardens, five or six years into their relationship, and Nikolai brings Kaz to one of their favorite hangout spots by a fountain

-AND THEN HE’S GETTING DOWN ON ONE KNEE AND KAZ CAN’T BREATHE BECAUSE HOLY SHIT THIS IS HAPPENING

-NIKOLAI GIVING KAZ THE FAMILY RING THAT HE’D ORIGINALLY INTENDED FOR ALINA

-Kaz says yes, of course

-They have two weddings, one small private one in Ketterdam with only their close friends in attendance and then a gigantic ball in Ravka

-Half the country attends because even they love Kaz because he helps the poor by stealing from the rich like a black-clad Robin Hood. (He only steals from the bad rich that exploit their workers- he used to think all rich people were bad, but Nikolai is the obvious exception)

-The church is packed as Kaz walks down the isle towards Nikolai, who’s all dolled up in his King’s outfit and is staring at Kaz open-mouthed

-Nikolai grabbing Kaz’s face and kissing him hard when the person in charge of the ceremony pronounces them husband and husband

-Kaz is so flustered that he just melts into it

-The afterparty is insane

- There’s singing and dancing and a whole orchestra as Kaz is introduced to tons of important people and Grisha of all orders

-The Dregs were all invited, and they’re sitting off to the side awkwardly as Nina meets up with old Grisha friends and introcudes them to her girlfriend

-Inej is blushing and embarrassed to say the least as Zoya and Genya fawn over them

-Nikolai pulling Kaz off to the side to introduce him to two seemingly normal people that can only stay for a little while.

-The woman has a hood pulled over her head but once they’re alone she pulls it down and reveals a shock of white hair. Her husband his gruff but friendly, and both congratulate them before disappearing off into the night.

-Kaz has an idea of who they are

-When the party is over they retire to Nikolai’s chambers, where they fall onto the bed

-Clothes are slowly shed and tossed onto the floor

-Kaz getting all blushy when Nikolai tells him how gorgeous he is

-They haven’t done anything up until this point because Kaz was always too nervous about his flashbacks, but Nikolai is patient and caring and Kaz knows that he’s safe as his legs frame Nikolai’s hips.

-Kaz being how shocked at how good it feels

-The two of them falling asleep in each other’s arms

-Kaz wondering how he managed to be alone for so many years

-They’re together happily until the day they die- it’s the same night, both in their sleep, and they’re both well into their old age

-Kaz Dirtyhands Brekker, the Demjin, the Bastard of the Barrel, doesn’t get shot in his twenties and have his body dumped in the canal

-No, instead he dies peacefully in his sleep in the Ravkan palace with his husband next to him, holding his hands and smiling

-He dies happy
