soooooo what's this tales of the gas station *twirls some fettuccine*
FIXATION POWERS..... ACTIVATE
SO! tales from the gas station is,,,,, pretty much my strongest fixation atm. my interest in it waxes and wanes a bit sometimes but it's always there in the background. looming.
what is it specifically? WELL! tales from the gas station is a creepypasta series centering around an underpaid, exhausted gas station clerk named jack townsend (who has the same name as the author, but i treat them as 100% separate and distinct entities, kinda how the protag of tma has the same name as his performer/writer).
for the most part, the gas station is pretty ordinary, except for the fact that weird shit happens there sometimes. however, as the series progresses, the weird shit becomes less and less benevolent and a lot scarier. the thing is, though, that jack is so used to weird shit that most of it doesn't rattle him, and the series has a REALLY good deadpan sort of humor to it that's just delightful. also it gets really absurd sometimes and it's just GOOD.
so, there's the creepypasta series, but it also has been adapted into a four-part book series! i'm still making my way through the books but boy howdy am i a fixated little man. i love it dearly. the books tell the same story as the original creepypasta for the most part, but the books go into significantly more detail and connect it into a larger narrative better.
so what's the actual plot premise? what kicks things off?
well, without getting into spoilers! picture this! you're a severely underpaid, overworked gas station employee with a ton of health issues and, in general, a lot to worry about. one day, your best friend pulls you aside at work to ask you about the guy who just came into the store and is just kinda hanging out. you explain who the guy is, and our friend says, very worriedly, "no, that can't be him. i killed him last night. his body's still in my trunk."
that's the day jack is having.
and as a last note, one thing i think is fun with this series is that like... the books tell the full story, but the original creepypasta is still *kinda* canon in-universe, in a way! because part of the plot involves jack keeping a blog to document his life and the weird shit in it, and the creepypasta represents that blog. i just think that's neat :3
anyway ok i have a lot of thoughts about this series but that's the basic rundown!!! if you want more i have like 300 essays locked and loaded /hj
That time Cardan banished Jude & expected her to unbanish herself tho 😂😭😭
That time Jude ACCEPTED IT AND DIDN'T EVEN CONSIDER THE POWER SHE LITERALLY JUST MARRIED INTO
That time Cardan wrote lETTER AFTER LETTER apologizing & begging Jude to come back bc he thought she got the joke & was just punishing him by giving him the silent treatment
That time all of Jude's letters from Cardan were interceded so she lived for MONTHS thinking Cardan maliciously tricked her bc she never got any of the letters
These two have more misunderstandings than any couple ever lmfao.
Only Friends Episode 7 | "You wouldn't get me." "You're right, I might not get you."
This episode did me so dirty. We had about ten seconds of Ray/Sand fluff and then THIS happens. I'm so completely heartbroken for him. Seeing Ray and Mew together just felt so wrong. (I'll have to dive into a separate post as to why). But for now, I just feel for my man here.
I'm having so many thoughts about Gem. She joins the series with this big reputation of GeminiSlay- but the truth is that she doesn't want to hurt anyone. Yes she carried out the boogeyman curse, but only because the secret keeper told her to. And even during that, she was still loyal to her original alliances at the start, until the curse was too consuming. Then when she was red, she didn't touch Scott or Impulse until they gave up their lives for her.
And then in the finale. Gem is so tired of being GeminiSlay. She says to Scott that she doesn't want to have to lead anyone. Before the final battle of the band vs the mounders, Gem sounds so defeated when she tells Pearl she doesn't want to fight. And when Scott asks her to kill him again, Gem sounds so hopeless. And after he's dead, she doesn't even know how to process it.
Gem is just so. Hrhrhrh. She's kind but she's deadly. She follows the rules and carries out tasks the best she can, with the slight caveat of not touching her Scotts (and eventually Pearl). She can be so vicious, but she doesn't always want to be.
I loved what she did with her series so much, and I hope to see her in another life series if they do more seasons <3
the brainrot has been hitting extra hard of late. so lyric-posting hours it is 👍
cw + lyrics under the cut!
// You praised me by saying “You’re crazy.” Thank you, I’ll do my best
// From today you'll be the air I breathe, your breath is everything in me
// If with one click, and I can reset everything, I want to be your favorite next
// I’m yours now and forever but do you even like me deep inside? Guess I, guess I’ve been lied to this whole_ damn_ time //
// So (..) burn me at the stake and make me out to be an evil villain. Painting my sins, it's totally fine.
// After all, it has never been my fault! My innocence is proven by the verdict that you chose.
// Come gather ‘round, we’re slicing her open. A burning sort of passion suddenly woken. “How stupid” I sigh, your stubbornness claims my mind. The answers I’ve yet to find.
// I’m so sick of love love, love. I have had enough.
The After Pain lyrics are taken from this amazing cover while the It's Not My Fault lyrics are from this other amazing cover. Everything else is linked :D
Milgram is about murder so the music videos depict that pretty frequently, sometimes more explicitly and sometimes symbolically depending on how many theorists they want to make angry. Also it's co-created by DECO*27 so themes of suicide/self harm and toxic relationships also tend to pop up 👍
so basically haruka's a very messed up person so desperate for any kind of love he can get no matter how the other party treats him But is also incredibly unhinged, possibly dangerous and muu is a manipulative brat whose instinct is to berate and use those around her because she's scared of being hurt. they are best friends and awful for eachother.
are you seeing the parallels im seeing.
I rambled a bit more abt the lyrics here and here if anyone's curious.
poses/expressions are ref'd from haruka and muu's trial 2 teasers! I LOVE these smug ass looks so much.
Between the matching bracelets and the tender make out session I love them so much and their tiny future discount shopping like idiots together and their travels and their future of happiness and freedom.
there was some display gallery showing off the various logos in hypmic and the ichikuu peeps on the tl were in shambles over both of them using halos in their mc name signatures lol
"I'm not choosing. I'm just not eating" - Pete and the concept of choice
Oh Pete.
You wonderful being, you.
(Can you tell that I'm lost for words already? Great)
I cannot stress enough what this line has done to my brain. I keep thinking about it to this day. I'm sure there are posts here that have delved on it in a more coherent way than what I'm about to do but I would like to offer sth to the fandom besides a small number of fics that will fade into obscurity, so here we are.
(If anyone knows of posts that have touched this subject, pls share them, I'd love to read them)
This line, at first glance, seems contradictory. What do you mean you're not choosing Pete? Not eating is a choice you've made. Surely, you must see that.
The thing is, though, Pete doesn't see that as a choice. To Pete, there's the choice of submitting to Vegas and the choice of fighting him. Doing nothing, to Pete isn't considered a choice. He's inactive, passive, simply existing.
Kind of like how he is as a bodyguard in the main family.
As a bodyguard, Pete doesn't make choices. Other people make them for him and he follows them. The first actual choice he makes is going to the minor family's compound to get the evidence against Vegas (which is fantastic and deserves its own separate analysis but I digress). Otherwise, he's just a weapon for the main family to use, nothing more, nothing less.
You can tell that this is his philosophy in life by examining his behaviour throughout the show up to this point. Does he have opinions and expresses them? Oh hell yes. Does he still do whatever he's told with minimal arguing? Also yes.
I would dare say, in headcanon fashion, that this is his mindset from when he was young and defenseless against his father's violence. I'm fairly confident in my opinion that Pete never fought back against his father, kind of like what Vegas is doing with his but not exactly the same. I believe Pete never even spoke back at him, like Vegas does both in ep 11, when he tells Gun he's doing what he told him, and in ep 13, when he tells Gun he never wanted to be his son.
For this reason, I'm a bit skeptical with the headcanon of Pete killing his father. I think it goes against the basic principles of his character; he's submissive in nature and doesn't fight back and just accepts the violence inflicted on him. Maybe, in Pete's mind, he feels that he deserves it. It would certainly explain his self sacrificial tendencies throughout the series, that's for sure.
Now, back to the scene in question, in Pete's mind, a choice would be to eat the food or to throw it away, wasting it. Not touching the food, letting it go bad, isn't a choice. Vegas doesn't see it that way because of course he doesn't; to Vegas, Pete is retaliating, acting defiant again but Pete isn't doing that. He's simply doing...nothing.
Generally, the first time I saw this line, it reminded me of ATLA, specifically this exchange:
Whoever has watched the show probably remembers that episode, in which Aang learned the third option of earth bending. That is, doing nothing = waiting.
That's what Pete did. He did nothing, he waited, either to slowly die or to find a chance to escape.
I feel like I'm not explaining myself properly but I just love how Pete's mind works and I wanted to touch upon this line specifically. It's such a nuanced take on agency and whoever came up with this line deserves all the projects they can get.
the second male lead syndrome is hitting extra hard for me these days with both Bake Me Please (Guy) and Pit Babe (Way). if they're not happy by the end of their respective series, like WHAT'S THE POINT!
playing: กลืน - Poom Phuripan (Bake Me Please OST)
playing: คนไม่ค่อยดี (Invisible Love) - Nut Supanut (Pit Babe The Series OST)
[ID: a black and white animatic based on the owl house set to "Letter to an old poet" by Boygenius. End ID]
Not sure when/if I'll finish this (I have the rest planned out!) BUT I liked it too much to just sit on it forever!!! So take this messy work in progress. She's not perfect but she makes me Feel Things
(sorry about the lack of ID, I don't know how to write them for videos! If you have any suggestions/want to give it a go, feel free!)
I’m going to start off by saying - this episode HURT. They really aren’t holding back on the pain in Sky’s arc, and I wasn’t anticipating so much of it so soon. I found some of the scenes in this episode incredibly upsetting to watch, and I’m sure a lot of you will too - because we all adore our boy so much.
I feel like it’s going to take me longer than usual to digest this episode, because there were parts in this that were really heavy and dark, and I don’t know why but I didn’t expect them to go there. I already have a few things I want to do deeper dives on, but I’ll mention some of the key takeaways from this episode.
Prapai has already registered that something’s seriously wrong with Sky. And he deserves more credit than a lot of people gave him. He may not know what to do with that information yet, but you can tell he’s serious about finding out.
The other moments I really appreciated were the scenes of Rain firstly finding out about Prapai pursuing Sky, and then handing over care of Sky to Prapai when Sky gets sick. That was definitely protective best friend behaviour there. You could tell it was probably the first time Rain had seen Sky so vulnerable, and he wasn’t about to leave his friend with someone who couldn’t be trusted. The sad part of this is that the episode confirmed that Rain essentially knows nothing about Sky’s ex. Didn’t know he was a guy for starters, has definitely no idea the level of trauma that Sky now suffers regularly because of it.
And finally Sky getting sick. Yes, I’m a self-confessed sucker for whump, and characters comforting each other. I was however NOT expecting this scene to come up so soon and for it to be so darn painful. My poor baby was under an incredible amount of mental turmoil and pressure that it finally took its toll.
I think we are starting to get the first glimpses of Prapai’s love language, which is taking care of his loved ones by making sure their needs are met. He was constantly asking if Sky had eaten and whether he was taking care of himself. It made my already fragile heart ache every time Sky denied himself Prapai’s concern.
JESUS CHRIST, I don’t know how I’m going to live through this. This was so incredibly heart-breaking. I’m going to go sob into my pillow now.
