#original #I missed a call and they left a message #first message I've gotten on the new phone #I clicked the notification to open it. it appears to instead initiate a *phone call* #with a robot that says 'please enter your password and then press pound' #and when I did nothing repeated that #I then hung up #assuming that it was some sort of weird thing that might've had to do with the fact the voicemail said it was from 'dial*86' #instead of an actual number and that might've tricked my phone into making a call. which is probably for scam reasons #so assuming that. I went to just open the actual vm app #only to be greeted with an opening card that says vm needs permissions #(formatted so it looked like there was supposed to be a list but they forgot to pass it in) #and saying 'hit continue then grant the permissions' #I hit continue and got the popup pictured in this post #I will not be doing that #what the fuck

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:

"I just want an identical experience to DL"

Busuu (Languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Korean)

"I want a good audio-based app"

Language Transfer (Languages: French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English for Spanish Speakers)

"I want a good audio-based app and money's no object"

Pimsleur (Literally so many languages)

Glossika (Also a lot of languages, but minority languages are free)

*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.

Mango (Languages: So many and the endangered/Indigenous courses are free even if you don't have a library that has a partnership with Mango)
