I don't understand the hate for Sly 4. Can you explain why you think the game sucked?

Alright. I’ll give you a summary of the major issues I have with Sly 4, and try to keep it brief. Here’s an itemized list of 30 years of disagreements (Sweet Jesus):

-First off, the first half of the game is fucking incredible. (If that sounds like a weird place to start, that’s only because it is.) The opening recaptures the spirit of the games wonderfully - and given I was a returning fan, fresh off an eight-year hiatus, that was amazing - Japan is beautiful and builds well, and Cotton Mouth Bluff is probably my favourite level in the entire damn franchise.Even leaving aside how I can’t pretend bad installments of my favourite things didn’t happen - that’s just not how my brain works - part of the reason Sly 4 irks me is because it had so much goddamn potential. It’s an updated Sly Cooper game where he and the Gang go on time-adventures. We were so close to something incredible. This should, by rights, be my favourite game in the series, and also of all time.I’m angry because I care.

-Carmelita’s redesign. She was already a very sexualized character, but she used to have sensible jeans and a sense of vaguely realistic athleticism. Sanzaru insisted on pushing the sexualization further, and since we started at a pretty advanced point, it got taken to frankly disgusting levels. Her waist terrifies me. You can see her ribs. The badass Interpol inspector is now worryingly underweight. It legitimately creeps me out.

-I don’t like the caveman level. This is the least analytical gripe, I admit that. I just… don’t like the caveman aesthetic. Never liked the Flintstones or anything similar. That’s just subjective.What’s not subjective is how the Gang ending up in just the right place and time to stumble across another of Le Paradox’s lieutenants is a strong contender for the least likely coincidence in all of fiction. But whatevs. Them improvising an escape while falling down a cliff was cool.

-Likewise, as Cooper ancestors go, Bob is very underwhelming. He’s a big ugly block who reuses the Guru’s joke. Instead of Henriette or Slaigh or anybody else in the Vault or Henriette, we got this guy. Great.

-The Grizz. Unfunny character with an awful boss fight. Complete bungling of what a graffiti is or does or sounds like. Unnervingly racist.

-The Penelope twist. Good god in heaven, what even was that? I mean, I was interested. I gave the game the benefit of the doubt, all ears for what the explanation was. Unfortunately, that explanation never came. We’re still not sure what the hell was going through Penelope’s head. She’s just evil now. A lovable character, funny and endearing and not overly sexualized (which in this series is rare), just… twisted. For no real reason.There’s zero textual information justifying her decisions. Especially because the focus is entirely on Bentley, giving her no room to explain herself. And sure! Bentley’s great, I love him, but I also love Penelope and I also love(d) their in-practice painfully brief relationship. I want Geeks in Love doing Crimes Together, not a half-assed betrayal twist.

-Ms Decibel. Irritating to watch. Retread of both Octavio and the Contessa. Has no reason for having mind control powers. The fact it’s just “ha ha there is a trumpet in her nose” genuinely irritates me. This isn’t hard sci-fi, but it ain’t Looney Tunes either. Try harder.The Joke Is That She Is Fat And Ugly. Ha Ha Ha.

-The Carmelita belly dance. Sweet CHRIST. If I keep coming back to this, it’s because it’s gotten me progressively angrier ever since the first time I played it and felt an uncomfortable churn in my gut.This shit is genuinely disturbing. She is coerced. Why did Sanzaru think this was a good idea? Everybody in the writer’s room signed off on this; anyone who may have wanted to stop it didn’t manage to. Then it got animated and designed and Grey DeLisle was called into the booth to voice how beloved strong-willed icon of my childhood Inspector Carmelita Fox was deeply uncomfortable with this sexual act three men she was close to were forcing her to perform. I don’t find this shit amusing. Kids play these fucking games, man.

-Carmelita’s (lack of) use in general. She gets some good moments when she’s first dragged along, again making Tennessee’s level the best. Then she storms off during Bob’s. Then, after wandering back and calming down? Next to nothing. She’s barely there.Bentley shutting down over Penelope’s betrayal was a perfect opportunity for her to take charge and show off her tactical prowess as an officer. What did we get? “Uh… let’s go with Galleth’s plan, then walk forward through Penelope’s front gate. idk guys” Outside of objectifying her, Sanzaru had no idea what to do with her, and it shows.

-The underwhelming climax. The finale of Sly 2 felt earned. The original three all had great final acts, but I bring up the second because it resembles the fourth. In both, there’s a last-minute upset where everything the Gang has accomplished so far is suddenly snatched away.But Sly 2 built that feeling. From the moment Jean Bison sees through the Gang’s disguises, things get worse and worse. The time they spend in stony silence, hiding in that battery, really creates a sense of encroaching dread. Things are going wrong, but they’re going wrong slowly. And that’s worse.Sly 4 - perhaps due to a dwindling budget - rockets through where that suspense should be. “Le Paradox showed up and stole Carmelita and then his plan worked and he was king of everything and we were sad but we went to fight him anyway.” wow. my emotions. i’m so invested.One of the lines I can particularly remember is “I don’t ever remember feeling so defeated.” Oh, you don’t, Sly? Not when you lost every Clockwerk Part at once? Not when Clockwerk was reassembled and Neyla merged with him? Not when you watched your parents be murdered in front of you?It’s 100% Tell, 0% Show. That’s not how you do a finale.

-Le Paradox. God. Just… god. Obnoxious in a way that isn’t entertaining. An awful, nasty character who does not receive an adequate level of comeuppance for his overblown, overwrought crimes. Rapey. He hates Sly for something Conner did; Sly has no agency here, he’s just a victim, pulled into the story because he’s directly threatened over something he had no part in. That’s bad writing. Bad writing which retreads other, more interesting antagonists.Doesn’t hold a candle to Clockwerk, Arpeggio, Neyla or Dr M. Unlike them, Le Paradox survives his game, which a) feels like too light a punishment if everybody else got a dramatic death and b) creates the worrying prospect they intend to bring him back. Ugh. Would work fine as an insignificant filler villain; instead, has means, power level, and (intended) gravitas outstripping Clockwerk. Total disconnect between his persona and his stupid, childishly powerful plan.Bigger =/= better.Skunks don’t come from France.

And, of course, the grand finale. The last thing to happen to Sly Prime. To this day, four and a half years later, the current state of the original series, and what may well be the overall ending at this point no matter what Sanzaru originally intended long-term. Everybody sing along at home~!

-A terrible cliffhanger ending with no sequel greenlit!

There. That about covers it. For me, anyway. Everybody has their own take.For the record, every box in that brain meme is a genuine opinion of mine. Sly 4 is most certainly a Sly game. It has amazing art and great moments. It brought in a ton of new fans, and kept the franchise going. That can’t be undervalued.But it’s the most flawed installment by a wide, wide margin. Sly 1 was rough, but a lot of that feels like beginner’s jitters. 4′s flaws feel more like huge, enthusiastic strides in the wrong goddamn direction, made by well-meaning people who are super excited to bring the franchise to places I do not want it to go. Like Sexual Objectification Town.

I don’t hate it blindly, but I can’t pretend I love it. I’m not gonna repress my negativity. This is my blog where I talk about Sly Cooper. And when I talk about Sly 4, I won’t skip over its flaws. In the vague hope that maybe, if I explain how and why these things don’t work, there’ll be less of these mistakes in the world. For my own writing, if nothing else. Straightening out my emotions into coherent, rational analysis. Looking toward the future.

…that and because it’s cathartic.

I mean they are in France, so I would always expect French coming out of their mouths. It's just logical to me.

I really like your opinions so i want to know: if Sly 5 was a continuation of the whole time travel and meeting ancestors, and we're continuing the pattern of five villains per game, then what kind of villains would you pair up with the ancestors per level? Like for example, Rouishi and El Jeffe, Bob and The Grizz, ect.

Excellent prompt! Well, first thing’s first: what ancestors would there be? I can’t come up with counterparts if there aren’t, um, parts. So let’s scrape together a quick line-up. All things considered, Slytunkhamen is a shoe-in. Let’s throw in our girl Henriette, and Thaddeus too. And, uh… sorta running out here… round out to five with Otto von Cooper and good ol’ Slaigh. 

That established - what makes a good villain? Long story short, an interesting contrast to the hero. So, 

Slytunkhamen - (Consolidating the three different holders of this name into one person for simplicity’s sake)SOMEONE WHO PLAYS CHILDREN’S CARD GAMESOkay, sorry, had to get that out of my system. As I recall, Slytunkhamen - plural - stole from corrupt pharaohs, making him quite the little anarchist. I think it follows that his opponent would be authoritarian, somehow representing if not embodying the local state apparatus. If most villains are imported in, a la Le Paradox’s gang, then maybe this one, in contrast, is literally just the local governor. Heck, depending on the plot, that might even fit nicely. Having Sly and Slytunkhamen deal with a local fracas before the time-travel plot can get properly underway.

Henriette - Well. The unfortunate fact of the matter is that, as the only female Cooper with a monument in the Vault, Henriette is pretty much representing her entire gender. She is The Girl. So that will need to be considered in light of how she’s likely (definitely) going to be the only female ancestor.The obvious route is to have a General Tsao type, an obnoxious misogynist who we help Henriette pound into the surf. That said - as much as I like to destroy obnoxious misogynists - it might also be interesting to have her rival also be a woman. Not in a Designated Girl Fight way, more in a “We’re both women in a man’s world but I still goddamn despise her” way. I dunno.I wanna talk in terms of Henriette’s actual personality, but unfortunately we don’t have much to go on aside from the fact she was (presumably) pretty smart and tough as nails. Whoever’s going toe to toe with the lesbian queen of the high seas better be worthy of her respect. Savvy?...Well, she can smell gold, right? Maybe her opponent should wear a ton of jewelry. Maybe even have gold in their prosthetics. H: “Avast, Sly! Not a sound.”S: “What? What’s wrong?”H: [sniff, sniff] “...She’s here.”

Slaigh - Slaigh’s stated to the be strongest of the Coopers, and has the absurd body shape to back up that claim. That leaves us with two obvious choices. The first is the classic Brains vs Brawn setup. The villain is a spindly little mastermind who tries to outthink Slaigh. This villain, btw, is 100% from England. That’s just unavoidable.But that character concept sounds very reminiscent of Arpeggio, and “loud bruiser versus tiny nerd in bygone Britain” sounds very reminiscent of Galleth vs Penelope. So in the interest of variety, here’s a second idea: Possibly my favourite Irish legend myth is our origin story for the Giant’s Causeway. Basically, Fionn mac Cumhaill, our strongest champion (who was like eight foot something) got challenged to a fistfight to a giant from Scotland who was even stronger. So instead of Brains vs Brawn, it’s Brawn vs More Brawn. Slaigh’s the strongest Cooper, but how much does that really mean? Sly and the Gang has to help him against a physically tougher opponent - and the resulting blow to his pride that might bring.

Otto - Otto, by contrast, is one of the smartest Coopers. So take everything I just said about Slaigh and reverse the polarity. Either someone equally skilled in engineering and mechanics, or a great big brute he needs tech to compete with. I’d kinda lean towards brute. Too often villain is the tinkerer and the hero smashes their toys. It’d be nice to see the other way around.

I honestly love your OC and the thought process behind it. I think it would be really interesting to have that kind of story line in the games. As I was reading it, I thought that it would be interesting that after ever boss fight, Sly has to fight Beth too who's fighting style (in my opinion) is very much similar to Sly's, giving the game a new fun of difficulty. I would love to see a sketch of Beth; I feel this character would be fun to come to light.

I totally agree about the fighting style! That’s one thing about Le Paradox I file under “Missed Opportunity” rather than “Bad Idea”; during his confrontation, his movements are obviously designed as a counterpart to Sly. He uses similar acrobatics and fights with a one-handed melee weapon. Unfortunately, the actual fighting is confined to quicktime events, but actually having a full boss fight against someone with Sly’s style would be amazing. That’s one of my all-time favourite video game tropes: can you survive your own tactics?

hitting 1k followers 💖💖💖

AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! For reasons unknown to me, one thousand people decided to follow this blog! And not only that, these people are also so kind and loving and supportive and ????? How did this happen?

Okay but seriously. I made this blog back in February in the midst of a depressive episode not expecting much of anything. I didn’t write much anymore, I didn’t do anything really, I didn’t know that much about EXO. I just wanted somewhere to write my feelings down, and those can be seen in the first oneshot that I wrote. I was running that parenting AU blog at the time and I wasn’t feeling that one too well, and I was set to just delete tumblr and never come back.

And then I met people. Wrote more. Wrote even more. More people came, met them too. Wrote a TON. Stopped writing. Started again and opened up to more groups. And now? I’ll be honest. It’s rough. I still plan on going on hiatus after my requests are done for health sake. But despite that, I know now that there are a thousand people to back me up, that will be here when I come back.

I cherish every interaction, every comment, every ask, every like. Each one is validation, and I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t crave that. Each one is telling me that I’m doing something right, that I’m making people happy (or angry, in some cases, but it’s all warranted and in good fun. I hope.) I’m just so happy and grateful to have a safe space to write and celebrate the idols that we all love.

While he gives his fair share of verbal affection, Baekhyun is very physical when it comes to giving you love. Lots of hugs and kisses.

He was so nervous. He rambled and stammered, pulled at the sleeves of his sweater and played with his hair, until you finally caught on and asked if he was asking you out.

Cuddles

Baekhyun always wants a cuddle. He clings to you like a koala, draping his arms and legs over your body, snuggling into your warmth.

Dates with him are mostly chill and fun. He’ll take you to the aquarium, the arcade, and the roller rink.

EXO

He loves that you get along with the other members. After you all hang out, you’ll catch him grinning on the way home.

Arguments are loud, but he can’t stay mad at you for long. He hugs you from behind and kisses your shoulderblade.

"I can’t believe we’re living together,” Baekhyun says. He wraps you in his arms and kisses you on the nose. 

“It is a nice place,” you reply.

“Our place,” he grins, before kissing you again.

Interest

He’s in love with your love. He thinks that you have the biggest heart out of everyone in the world, and all he wants to do is pay it back tenfold.

Jealousy

Baekhyun definitely gets jealous. He’ll pout until he gets your attention, and sometimes even resorts to light PDA to get you out of a situation.

Kisses

He sprinkles kisses all over your face. On closed eyelids and foreheads, noses and corners of lips. He’ll give you butterfly kisses and eskimo kisses, and giggles into every single one.

Love

"Let’s stay in today.” Baekhyun only hums in reply, so you say, “You can teach me how to play that game you like?”

He shoots up, bedhead sticking in every direction. “Really?!” He tackles you and gives you quick pecks on the lips. “I love you, I love you, I love you!” he says.

Morning

When you attempt to roll out of bed, he grabs you and pulls you back in. He mumbles your name in a sleepy voice and begs for five more minutes.

Name

He’ll call you wifey/husband and also something completely embarrassing just to make you mad.

Offspring

He’s uncharacteristically quiet when his daughter is born. He holds her for the first time, his eyes so full of love and worship.

“I love you so much,” he tells her, and holds her closer to his chest.

PDA

He’s all for PDA. He’ll play with your hands, surprise you with kisses, and peck you on the cheek no matter who’s watching.

Quiet

When he actually feels like being quiet, Baekhyun will hold your hand. He’ll drum little rhythms, kiss your knuckles, and run his thumb up the side.

Romance

“I made you breakfast in bed?”

The tray in his hands has nothing but a bowl of cereal. Baekhyun laughs sheepishly. “I tried to make eggs but that didn’t work out. And turns out I can’t make toast very well either -”

You cut him off with a kiss. “Thank you.”

Singing

He’ll serenade you at any moment, be it an EXO song or random nonsense that he’s coming up with on the spot. He sings for you unabashedly, crooning sweet notes that make you smile.

Touch

He loves to give you hugs. He just really loves to hold you in his arms.

Upset

Baekhyun can tell when you’re being serious, so he gives you the space you need. He’ll come and find you later with your favorite ice cream in hand.

Vulnerable

You can tell when it’s getting to him. When the stress and strain of being a performer, combined with an influx of negative comments, causes him to become tense. He collapses into your arms and lets you stroke his hair as he tells you all of his frustrations.

Wild Card

In the mornings, the two of you brush your teeth together. He’ll make faces at you in the mirror, and before long it becomes a competition to see who can make a sillier expression.

X-Rated

Baekhyun is a huge tease, and loves to drive you to your breaking point before giving you what you want.

"A puppy?” you ask.

“She’s ours,” Baekhyun says, passing her to you. You notice something on her collar.

The air felt still, too still. The atmosphere held its breath as you stood in the doorway of your home, holding your husband’s hand. Your beautiful, beautiful husband that you wouldn’t see for quite some time.

Maybe you wouldn’t see him ever again.

“You’re worrying,” Chanyeol said, softly, squeezing your hand. 

“Of course I am,” you replied. “This is a war.”

A sliver of a smile appeared on Chanyeol’s face before he leaned forward to kiss you on the forehead. “Home by Christmas.”

“Home by Christmas,” you repeated. It was a mantra that Chanyeol had started reciting ever since he told you that he enlisted. If only repeating it would make you believe it as well.

“I’ll write you every week,” Chanyeol whispered against your temple. “I promise.”

Your chest ached, the liquid fire of tears burning behind your closed eyelids. He’s going to be fine, he’s going to be fine, he’s going to be fine. Chanyeol was so sure that he would be okay, yet a terrible feeling sat in the pit of your stomach.

Chanyeol pulled away and frowned at your expression. “No tears,” he said, wiping at your face. “Promise me you won’t cry until I come back.”

You nodded, reaching up to wrap your fingers around his wrist, keeping his hands on your skin. “Promise me that you will come back.”

He pressed his lips against yours sweetly, intensely. Like he was trying to remember the shape of your mouth when it came time to part. “I love you so much. So, so, much.”

“Daddy?”

Chanyeol pulled away from you to grin at your daughter, who had snuck up silently. “Princess, why aren’t you sleeping?”

“I wanted to say goodbye again,” the little girl pouted, raising her arms for Chanyeol to pick her up, which he did almost immediately. 

You watched as Chanyeol blew raspberries onto your child’s cheeks, her laughs echoing in the dim hallway. Home by Christmas, you told yourself. Home by Christmas.

He was not home by Christmas.

Summer turned to fall turned to winter. True to his word, you received a letter from Chanyeol every single week, never ceasing. He told you about the friends he made, about the places he was going. He retold stories that his fellow soldiers told him about their own lives, just to fill up space on the paper.

Not once did he mention the violence that he was no doubt experiencing. You weren’t sure whether to be relieved or worried.

As the months turned and the Earth spun on its axis, the letters became shorter and shorter. His handwriting was scrawled, messy, chicken scratch that you had to squint to read.

One December morning, you received a letter that was only one sentence long.

I don’t think we’ll be home by Christmas.

You almost broke your promise, almost broke down to tears right there by the kitchen sink. You would have, too, if your daughter hadn’t wandered in to ask for breakfast.

By January, the letters were only a few words. I’m okay and I love you and I miss you both. Your heart ached with each one, it ached each time you placed the letters into your favorite hatbox and stored it under your bed.

That winter was bitter and cold in more ways than one.

“Where is he? Where is he?”

You held your daughter’s hand tightly as you tiptoed to peek over the crowd. The war was finally, finally, over. After two long years of worrying, of praying, of holding your breath every time you checked the mail, it was over.

It was over and your husband was coming home.

“Do you think he’ll recognize us?” your daughter asked. “Do you think we’ll recognize him?” She was a mere five years old when Chanyeol left; now she was seven and beautiful. It was apparent now more than ever that she had his smile.

“We’ll see, darling,” you said, scanning the soldiers coming off the train. So far none of them were familiar. 

Seconds ticked by like hours. Couples were being reunited all around you, sons and daughters jumping into the arms of their parents. Anxiety itched under your skin, waiting to be experiencing what they were.

“Daddy!” Your daughter suddenly left your side and ran off. You whirled around, tracking her movements. You watched as she launched herself at one of the men, who immediately caught her and held her close.

It was him.

“Chanyeol!” you yelled, your voice breaking. You ran, ran like your life depended on it. Chanyeol put your daughter down just in time for you to barrel into his arms, clutching him against you. You could tell he was different, hardened by the war, but this was him. His scent enveloped you as tears ran down your face. 

You pulled away to get a better look at him and yes, yes, it was him. He was tired, ragged, but a scrap of the spark in his eyes was there. He grinned wide, so wide you could drown in that light.

You tugged him into a desperate kiss, your arms wrapped around his shoulders. His hand settled on your waist, tugging you impossibly close to him. His heart thudded against your chest, his lips moved against yours.

He was home.

Baekhyun shoved his hands deeper into his pockets, the cold air kissing the exposed skin of his face. The night was deathly still; not a soul moved or made a sound.

He was used to the silence. Every night was like this: alone on Earth, wandering through whichever town he ended up in. No one but the crickets to keep him company.

He used to have a job, long ago, but he hasn’t collected any dreams in years. With no one to share them with, the jars sat on his shelves back home, their contents twinkling for no eyes but his. It was an unneeded profession, dying. He’d have to find something else to do soon before he started dying along with it.

Baekhyun was just about to call it a night and wait until sunrise when he felt a tug in his lower back. He stopped. Turned. 

He hadn’t felt this in years. Decades, even.

He followed the pull into the house he was walking by. He passed through the window easily and found himself inside a bedroom.

That’s how he found you again: sat up in bed, hair a mess, eyes wide.

“You’re real,” you whispered.

Baekhyun was an imaginary friend of yours. 

You remembered telling your mom that the reason you were too sleepy to go to school was because your friend Baekhyun was talking to you all night. 

“He came in through the window!” you had told her. “He collects my bad dreams.”

Every night Baekhyun would come to you, listen to you talk about your day, and then leave once you fell asleep. So it was for two years, up until he had faded from your memory, now that you had become too old for imaginary friends.

“So you’re a god?”

Baekhyun sat cross-legged on your bed and scratched at the back of his neck. “Of sorts? More of a guardian really.”

You laughed, still in disbelief. He looked exactly the same as he did all those years ago. The same dark hair, same boyish smile, same twinkle in his eyes. You had just barely gotten a glimpse of him the night before, when he first arrived in your room and was so startled he disappeared instantly. 

“Whatever you are, I’m glad you came back tonight,” you admitted. You fidgeted with your fingers in your lap. “I thought I scared you off.”

“No, you did,” Baekhyun said, making you laugh. “But I wanted to come back. I’ve, uh, been lonely for quite some time now.” He smiled at you sheepishly. “That’s how I knew to find you again. I can feel it when someone needs me, you know. I haven’t felt that in a long time.”

“When someone needs you?” you asked.

“Yeah,” Baekhyun nodded. “Usually if someone has a nightmare and they call for me, I’ll appear and take it away, then replace it with a new one! It’s what I used to do before everyone forgot about me.”

“Well...” You shifted on the bed so you were sitting closer to him. “I have been getting really bad nightmares lately. Do you think you could help?”

Baekhyun laughed. “Of course I can! That’s what I’m here to do. But you’re not asleep yet, silly.” 

You rolled your eyes. “You know, I’m not six anymore, you can talk to me like an adult.”

He stuck his tongue out at you. “Whatever. I’m still older.”

“I want to see them,” you said.

“See what?” Baekhyun asked. He stayed laying down at the foot of your bed, his hands behind his head.

“Your dreams. You said you keep them?”

Baekhyun frowned, sitting up. “Most of them are back home.” He brightened up suddenly. “Oh! But I did pick one up on my way here.”

“You did?” you asked.

“I forgot to bring a good one for you tonight in case your nightmares haven’t gone away, so I took one from someone else.”

“Isn’t that stealing?” 

“Not really,” he shrugged. “It’s not like they’ll have a bad dream. They just... won’t have a dream for the night.” He held his palm out. “Watch.”

A sphere of warm light appeared, hovering over Baekhyun’s hand. The light swirled and fluttered, spiraled and soared. It felt like everything good in the world was there in the palm of his hand.

“Wow,” you breathed. “Do they all look like this?”

“No,” Baekhyun replied. “Well, this is what they look like when they’re pure. But when I take them home and I store them, they look different. All different colors and sizes!”

You looked at him with awestruck eyes. “Take me there.”

Baekhyun hummed in reply, but then furrowed his eyebrows when he saw that you were serious. “Wait, right now?”

“Yeah. I wanna see. And besides,” you grinned, “I’ve kinda been wanting to spend more time with you.”

Baekhyun’s eyes lit up and he jumped off your bed, opening the window. He beamed, holding his hand out to you.

“Let’s go!” he said once your skin touched his, “I can introduce you to my dog!”
