if….(1968) dir. Lindsay Anderson.
5.2/10
About kids who feel oppressed by the British education system. Once again, all about conformity, strict rules, and lack of freedom.
This is strange, because it made me feel glad that the kids were shooting, but that is so wrong.
The erotic parts just remind me of more suppression.

15 - DISOBEDIENCE
Movie: If.... (1968)
So this movie is about - spoiler alert - a school shooting. It was a very challenging film to release in its day, and it is still tough now (possibly more so? but then, our films are more violent than they used to be). In order to get it past the censors, Lindsay Anderson added surrealist scenes so he could ague it out of an X rating, which he more or less did successfully. Malcolm McDowell is absolutely perfect in this role. He is believably a young white man on the verge of an atrocity, and this is the only movie I’ve ever seen that looks at this trajectory in a non-mawkish way. Perhaps it’s the sense of fun, perhaps it’s the McDowell Energy, or perhaps it’s the 60s Britishness - but either way, there’s no dribbling “oh he’s so misunderstood” or fetishistic “isn’t he awwwful” overtones to If.... and that’s what makes it great.
Anyway, this is from the caning scene, where you can absolutely see him sketching out a terrible plot in his naughty McDowellian face. I first saw this movie on a shonky rip from a worn-out VHS we copped from Blockbusters on Eccelshall Road (near where I grew up) just before it closed!
