Glad to see I'm not the only one in my Danny Ric feels after this weekend. Hope this helps! (sorry I didn't get round to writing it instantly, my afternoon was filled with landlord drama :/)

"Well, I'm okay,"

You dropped your head into your hands with a devastated groan, allowing yourself to slump back into your seat. Oh Danny no, not again, your heart broke for him and the dejection in his voice you just weren't used to. You couldn't believe it was happening again and that you were completely powerless to do anything about it.

Daniel had been your best friend for years, and whilst you adored and supported him you didn't know how many more times you could watch him slip down to the bottom of the F1 pack, getting shuttled between teams like he meant nothing. Not that you had anything against Lando and McLaren, but you couldn't believe once more that he was no more to them than a second driver, even the car came before him.

And now this, a crash in Monaco. His second home, his favourite track, the place he'd promised he'd get his redemption. Sitting virtually paralysed in your spot in hospitality watching him climb out of the orange car he'd been promised was his new family certainly didn't look like redemption to you.

He wasn't interested in anything that night. Usually, you'd hang out at his apartment all weekend for Monaco, but he told you he needed to stay in the garage to go over the incident. You'd seen this Danny before too, that no matter how shit of a situation he found himself in he was always blaming himself. He would stay up late, spend hours and hours pouring his heart and soul into working through problems, trying to find solutions he didn't need to. You were furious for him.

It was written in small black letters, but it was in the direct line of his helmet cam. Fuck 'em all. It was devastating, watching him become less and less of a priority of Lando and winning car, even when the younger driver was sick and not giving his best, but your chest warmed a little at Daniel's message. Maybe there was still that fight you knew and loved in him. Maybe your honey badger was in there after all.

But, like many things with Daniel, it wasn't meant to be. A low qualifying spot and a messy race with torrential rain and so many flags you lost the will to live saw him finish outside of the points once more. You were glad that he got home in one piece, at least, but you knew he wasn't. The second the last car pulled into a stop you all but ran to the McLaren garage.

He was there, sweaty and messy and as beautiful as post-race Daniel always was, but he was missing that huge smile and the light in his eyes. You didn't look once at the podium ceremony, your entire attention trained on Daniel who was staring at Sergio Perez with such deep heartbreak you didn't know what to do. He had to leave for press, reluctantly, so you pulled him into a quick hug and promised him you'd be over that evening.

And you did, after all the after-party arrangements had been made and Daniel's PR team had made their excuses you found yourself at the com of his flat, with a bag of far too much Chinese food in one hand and a bottle of wine in the other. He buzzed you in and you found him on the couch, staring fixedly at the TV, where the race highlights were playing.

"Don't watch them," you murmured, and he finally raised his head to look at you. He looked like a shell of your Danny. In sweatpants and a hoodie, his hair a fluffy, curly mess after his recent shower, but his eyes were red and you were worried he'd been crying. He didn't say anything, simply returning his attention to the TV. You decided to give him a minute, and busied yourself in his kitchen plating up the food and pouring two large glasses of wine.

He was still staring at the screen when you came back, so you picked up the remote and turned it off. He sent you the smallest smile you'd ever seen and a half-hearted thanks. You ate in silence, and he didn't touch the wine.

"I'm sorry about today,"

He dropped his head, refusing to even look at you. You were contemplating saying something else, but you didn't know if you'd make the situation worse when he moved toward you. His head found the space in your neck and he crawled into your chest like an overgrown child. Instinctively you wrapped your arms around him, tight because any contact with him was everything to you.

"Hey-"

"Please," his voice was thick, his accent almost unrecognisable with it "I just need a minute," you nodded, your chin just resting on the top of his head as you held him, rubbing gentle circles across his back. You weren't sure how long you stayed like that, or when exactly he decided to pull away and keep eating as if nothing happened, or when you found yourself watching him watch one of his terrible comedy movies. It was only when he didn't laugh at a single one of the cringey one-liners that you knew something was deeply wrong.

"Okay, Danny, what's going on? Because I've seen you laugh at this stupid fucking film from a hospital bed,"

The way he looked at you then was like nothing you'd ever experienced before. It was like he was staring straight into your soul, those big brown eyes of his so full of churning emotions that it made your chest constrict in rhythm. He sucked in a breath that was alarmingly shakey for someone so extraverted.

"I think I'm in love with you and I'm terrified,"

You couldn't help the surprised bubble of laughter that escaped you.

"Sorry, what?"

"I- you're my best friend and I love you. I'm so scared of losing this, us, but I can't sit here anymore and pretend I don't want more," his voice was too shakey to be your Danny, but the words were his. It was only then you realised his hands were wrapped around your wrists.

"You could never lose me," you murmured, speaking slowly to gauge his reaction as the confession you'd been pushing down for years came surging through "Not when I've been yours all this time,"

You didn't need to say those three words back, because he pulled you into a kiss so desperate it said them for you.

Hii!! Just a little thought I had I wanted to share, I’ve been watching a ton of Carlos’ Don’t Blink series on YouTube and he’s always driving everyone everywhere! I feel like he definitely wouldn’t let his significant other drive his car not bc he doesn’t trust them but I think he likes being able to drive casually and know everyone is gonna be safe given that he does it for a living LOL. I just feel like he would be protective and spoil his s/o and be the one to drive them around !

SO:

You didn't notice it at first

You'd only just started dating the Ferrari driver and you guessed he was proud of his career so insisted on driving you everywhere

Not that you minded because you didn't think you'd ever been a car like his road Ferrari, it was undoubtedly the coolest thing ever

As time went by and you'd been together for a couple of months you noticed that he shut you down every time you offered to drive, even if it was more convenient for the pair of you

He insisted on being the designated driver for every event

He'd go way out of the way to drop you off at home

You'd have to pile the shopping on the backseat in that silly low-suspension sports car because there wasn't enough room in the back and he wouldn't let you take your perfectly sensible and normal car out

And then you started watching Carlos with other people

He would always drive when he went to visit his parents or they came to see him

He would drive Rupert and other members of the Ferrari team everywhere

He'd let them film him, and answer questions and do his bits comfortably from behind the wheel

Hell, even after a race, when he'd been in a car for two hours and was sweaty and exhausted, he still insisted on driving you home

The only person you'd ever seen him let drive was his Dad, and Charles when they were doing challenge videos for the team's YouTube page

One day, curled up in bed, you realise you've run out of milk for tea

You're more than happy to pop out to the shops, but Carlos is having none of it and insists on driving you to the shops despite it being less than five minutes away

So you being you decided it was time to ask him

As it turns out, after much badgering, chasing him down and sitting on him and peppering him with kisses between tickles, he finally spills his guts to you

Carlos has five reasons why he never lets anyone else drive when he's around

Number One: he actually enjoys it. He loves being able to relax without the pressure of a race and just enjoy driving for what it is. He loves long road trips, especially in the summer, and he has several playlists to always set the perfect mood

Number Two: he admits, blushing and kissing you, that he worries so much about everyone. He's one of the top 20 drivers in the world, and his reaction times are almost superhuman. He thinks it's cruel to let anyone else drive. What if you got in an accident he could have swerved? If anything bad happened to you or anyone he cares about, he could never forgive himself. He'd always blame himself

Number Three: his ego. He grins at you as he flips the pair of you over and pins you down, pushing a knee between your legs with ease. Come on, he probes, what feels better to a man than cruising down the streets with the most beautiful woman in the front seat of the newest supercar, custom made for him?

Which brings him onto Number Four: he softens, boxing you in below him but pressing loving kisses to your skin as he does. He loves opening the door for you, holding out a hand to steady you as you lower yourself into his car. He loves the way you look at him as he guides the car confidently around the streets. The way he makes fast feel smooth and easy. He loves being a gentleman. He wants to treat you properly at all times. He wants you to be spoilt so that you never have to want or need anything ever again. He would do anything for you, and that extends to driving

And finally

Number Five: he rolls off you, burning his face in the pillow, making you laugh as you burrow down to his level to hear his muffled words better. He gets travel sick. Not badly, he defends, but enough that he's never really comfortable as a passenger. He'd rather drive, rather be in control of that feeling. He finds it embarrassing. You ask him how he flies so often, and he admits flying is okay, but he always carries anti-sickness tablets for turbulence and taxi rides

You pull him close, kissing him deeply and thanking him for finally telling you about his obsession with driving

He insists on taking you out for milk and MacDonalds, the pair of you in your pyjamas and you in his hoodie, in the brand new Ferrari. You're so scared you can't eat in the thing, but he just laughs at you with the bag of hot, greasy food perched so carefully on your knees

It's nearly midnight, and the orange glow from the street makes Carlos' hair shine and his eyes darken and he looks like he's glowing beside you as he sings along to Smooth Operator, because he thinks he's funny like that

He catches you staring, and his grin takes your breath away

"I love you," the words are so familiar to him, but he could listen to you say them again and again and again. He reaches out for your hand, thumb brushing your knuckles softly as he holds it gently

"I love you, too,"

Here is a cute little thing to hopefully ease the pain from today. Jesus Christ seeing him in that burning, rolling car just waving for help honestly broke my heart and I was so so scared for him. I'm so glad he's okay <3

And before y'all ask, the next thing being published will be Flat Spin Chapter 5!

I need to write two more sections for it before it will be ready. It WILL be done by next week, the day depends on how busy placement is (and how much I'm procrastinating packing to move home for summer)

as per usual this is total fiction and just an interpretation of the carlos we see in don't blink. the travel sickness idea literally came from that one video where lando yeets the car around the track whilst carlos is supposed to be asking questions and they both struggled. is most likely not true but i thought it was cute don't come @ me pls

your art is so good it's insane and it's got me curious about the new gods, do you have any comic recs?

eee thank you so so so much! my main recommendation for getting into new gods is the original Fourth World saga by Jack Kirby, all 3 titles are worth reading (Forever People, New Gods, Mister Miracle) but don't need to be read together necessarily (i read them all months apart)

New Gods is my favourite, there's also DC Graphic Novel #4 - Hunger Dogs by Jack Kirby, which is a continuation of his original new gods comic, euhm i confess i don't didn't like most of the later new gods comics but i did like a lot of their single issue appearances - i'm working through a reread where im going to read it more "story-first" than character-first and see if my opinion changes on any of them.. i think it was a lot of "baby out with the bathwater" for certain things tldr if ur getting into the series new..

kirby FW lightray is pretty fascinated by a TV, and Big Bear is super into the local movie theatre showing old films -

new titans introduced Pantha also known as experiment X-24, a woman experimented on in a lab to give her super senses, claws, and shes the gruff, edgy member of the team. and later jarras minion, who isnt really similar to xmen evo kurt outside of design and being called elf by the team

lightray solo. theres an article floating around about DC characters who've never received solos and it remarks that while Lightray is overdue, writing a genuinely nice hero would be too hard for most authors and ive been so mad forever

ive had an idea for a lightray-centric book for years now of him escaping one of desaad's labs deep underground with a half-dissected father box that he doesnt really trust but is his only ally, while orion searches tirelessly for his lost friend while someone (maybe kaiyo?) plays mind games on him. well i think itd be fun

11. What’s the first thing you think about when thinking about the character?

always think of him flying thru space like his first appearance first thing in mind... or shouting his intentions to the sky. hes just always got a very intense imagery in my mind

20. A weird headcanon

in his rare off moments, he likes the water, just sitting by it or swimming. seagrin taught him to swim as a child on NG, and he's very skilled at it - but he sometimes forgets it as a leisure activity in favour of pouring himself into his offensive against apokolips. in my old man AU i think his and lightray's home is near a body of water, orion just goes out and floats for a little bit

27. If they could meet a character from another show/movie/etc, who would be the most fun for them to meet?

FLUTTERSHYYYYYYYYY i just want it to happen idk i wanna work more on that joke AU where they go to the mall but ive been busy on other things :D i cant think of any non-dc characters i think would make for a legitimately interesting teamup for him thoughh

me: omg ill do these slowly throughout the week-SHADE? ???? Sexuality Headcanon: i think he has some latent sexual attraction to various ppl but sex is incredibly distressing to him caus im pretty sure that was a thing in the comic. idr

Gender Headcanon: Soooo so due for a reread on this so a big IF I RECALL CORRECTLY for all of this: but gender & sexuality is intentionally messy in Shade, and shade's own relationship to it is usually defined through traumatic events for him and others iirc. shade is insecure in his masculinity in canon, but seems to staunchly see himself as male, albeit in a defeating way. Id like to see Shade get to experience gender euphoria in a modern comic rather than going back to rejecting all feelings and go super-misogynist or w.e BUT i dont care what gender that ends up being in the end. i use he/him pronouns for him usually

UM TLDR: i think hes genderfucked / canonically he seems to be really unhappy about it but i wish he wasnt 

A ship I have with said character: i dont know if (lenny/kathy+kathy/shade) is a ship so much as Waoh You Guys Are A Disaster. Show Me More situation

A BROTP I have with said character: constantine maybe. not a lot of options. just to be clear i dont think they should get along i think shade should join him in being miserable and  sleeping in the hall of justice basement like as a gag everytime someone goes down there another d-lister magic user is there not shade specifically

OH: arnold burnsteel may be an interesting character to have interact w shade but again idk as friends, i can see shade being drawn to arnold’s paranoia or sthng

A NOTP I have with said character: lenny/shade i guess? we dont have a lot of options here. i guess i used to be into shadestantine and i dont care for it but i DONT dislike it. i would draw it again if i had a good pose/prompt but i have no idea how i was like deeply emotionally invested for a while there..........

A random headcanon: not necessarily a headcanon, but I think he should vape if he comes back hear me out. i dont like the Vertigo issues of STCM but when he uses/shares a hookah to smoke feelings/thoughts as "poetry" he's made. Should be a vape in a new comic

General Opinion over said character: i love him dearly, named my blog after him, made him a clown for my icon
