Fun Facts abt the residents according to Ikevamp Radio (ヴァンなま) Part 1
Found a playlist of Ikevamp Radio that occurred multiple years ago so I decided to collect my findings about the residents in a list. I haven't seen anyone translate it or talk abt it so I decided to do it for a bit of fun. Anyways, here are episodes 1-3!!
Some quick things to note before:
Vincent/Aramaki Yoshihiko (Makki) is the MC, Sebas/Morishima Shuta (Morishi) is a guest (but he’s in every episode he might as well be the 2nd MC). They also have other people as guests in some episodes (other ikevamp VAs or others related to the game itself)
Episodes 1 & 2 occur before Ikevamp’s release
most of my findings are from a segment from the livestream where the residents (mainly Vincent and Sebas) talk to each other & ask each other questions about the lives while they spend some bonding time in the thermae. The segment's called "I love yu" which is a pun on "I love you" and yu (湯) which means "hot water" or "bath"
There are also other segments where the VAs draw based on a designated theme & the viewers vote on the best art (van Gogh's drawing section), and another one where the VAs read the summary of the game in their in-character voices (but the VAs interrupt and make it funnier & less romantic) called "Ikemen Vampire, a guidance for you" (I won't talk abt these sections much tho)
ALSO!! This is not a translation of the whole livestream, just bits and pieces of it. I don't have the time and energy to do that
Episode 1: feat. Leonardo's VA Tsuda Kenjiro
youtube
Question: Which historical figure/genius do you respect the most?
Napoleon: Oda Nobunaga
Mozart: Johann Sebastian Bach
Leonardo: Michelangelo (which I thought was interesting since real-life Leo and Michelangelo had some beef w each other)
Morishima (Sebas’s VA): Newton (bc of the apple & theory of universal gravitation), Edison
Tsuda (Leonardo’s VA): van Gogh
Aramaki (Vincent’s VA): Liu Bei, Zhao Yun (I think that's who he was talking abt? I'm not familiar much w/Chinese figures' names in jp---they're read differently in Eng)
The other VAs joke that Aramaki’s similar to Napo in the sense that they both admire soldiers/military commanders
Question: Favorite part of a woman’s body? (This sounds so wrong in both jp & eng)
Napoleon: from the neck to the shoulder, he's prob talking abt the shoulders to the neckline or vice versa(首から肩まで)
Mozart: voice (so he can understand what his partner’s thinking & feeling)
Leonardo: thighs (bc it’s soft & he likes lap pillows)
Tsuda said Leo’s a bit of a pampered/attention-seeking child (甘えん坊), and not an ore-sama (which he thought Leo would be), an unexpectedly cute reason considering how reliable Leo looks
Vincent gets a bit sad when he’s bathing alone
Leo can sing a song that he’s only heard once (as expected of a genius)
Sebas can be seen hanging the sheets outside from Vincent’s room
Leo’s unsatisfied that there’s only men in the mansion (this was before MC stumbled to the mansion)
Vincent doesn’t want women in the mansion bc he wouldn’t know how to act in front of them
Sebas thinks Leo is an expert in handling women, Leo is confused when he became one
Leo’s weak against Vincent’s pleas/suggestions (honestly who isn’t??)
Sebas thinks it’s impossible for a woman to stumble upon the mansion (foreshadowing)
Leo thinks that fate will play a trick on them, his mumbling confuses Vincent and Sebas (more foreshadowing)
Episode 2: feat. Jun, singer of Ikevamp theme song "Rouge"
youtube
Jun is a repairman who fixes things around the mansion… HE'S ALIVE IN THAT ERA???? (Idk if its canon)
He also sings “Rouge” while he works which means the song exists in the 20th century (again idk how much of this is canon)
Jun also sells milk in the mansion, acting as a different person as the repairman, although Sebas & Vincent are suspicious of him (he literally just enters the bath to sell milk to Vincent and Sebas lol)
Vincent and Sebas talk about MC, she has arrived @ the mansion
Vincent worries abt her since she is surrounded by vampires in an unfamiliar environment, but to Sebas, it looks like MC enjoys her life and is headstrong (aka Vincent is just nice to others, nothing new)
Vincent believes that Sebas is cool and can do anything, to which Sebas indirectly disagrees (he coughs)
Sebas is weak to Vincent’s innocent eyes (just like Leo from the previous episode, again, who isn't?)
Sebas breaks the 4th wall talking abt a popular romance game where you can fall in love w/vampire-turned historical figures
This is literally the beginning of how Sebas goes ooc (becomes weirder) throughout the series (is it even ooc if it’s basically approved by official??)
Sebas says that Theo is overprotective of Vincent, Vincent comments that he’s supposed to be the older one
they also introduce my fav segment (Can you tell me... your name?) where they have listeners vote on quotes they want the VAs to say, and they will say the line w/the listener’s names so it sounds like the VAs are speaking to them. Vincent's & the guest (if there is one) will have legit cool lines (like “(y/n), Don’t let go of me” or “(y/n), you’re the only one in my eyes”) but Sebas always has one funny line as one of his options (ex. “Hey, do you wanna have a takoyaki party?” or “Do you want to fry one more sanma?”) and every single time the weird line gets voted and ITS FUNNY AS HECK
Also in the same segment the viewers will sometimes submit funny names for the VAs (especially Sebas) to say & it adds to the laughs
Ex. for Sebas’s “Hey, do you wanna have a takoyaki party?” some viewers gave names of Anpanman characters (a children’s anime in Japan) so Sebas will literally say things like “Jam-ojisan, hey, do you wanna have a takoyaki party?”
There was also one whose name was Tako (octopus in japanese) so Sebas would say “Tako, do you wanna have a takoyaki party?” so he’s asking the octopus to have a takoyaki party where the octopus will be eaten (the irony as well as the dark underlying meaning behind it is very funny)
Also the way the other people are laughing while Sebas’s VA is trying to keep his cool is so hilarious
It’s predetermined and agreed upon the Ikevamp staff that Sebas (or Morishi) is willing to do/say weird things for the audience
This whole segment is a whole ride in and out of itself
Episode 3: feat. Leonardo’s VA Tsuda Kenjiro once again
youtube
Sebas once again breaks the 4th wall by referencing episode 1 of the show
Sebas teaches Leo the basics of manzai (a type of japanese comedy)
Leo says “Vannama” (the name of ikevamp radio) and “tendon” (the food and a manzai phrase)  in a weird accent further proving that he doesn’t understand Japanese (or maybe it's bc the two phrases are too specific idk)
Sebas tells Leo to ignore what he’s saying as he is saying metafictional expressions (メタ発言) basically how he is breaking the 4th wall, and Leo just accepts that as another one of Sebas’s quirks
Vincent comments that Leo’s very manly, Sebas further compliments him saying that Leo is a man amongst men
This episode has one of the funniest (imo) “Can you tell me… your name?” segments ever. Vincent and Leo’s VAs had amazing lines, but Sebas… oh gosh where do I even start. (ok Leo’s VA did say “Ushi (cow), wait for me by the bed,” and “Namamono (raw food), wait for me by the bed” & that was funny too but…)
One of the options for Sebas’s lines (and the one that was ultimately chosen to be said) was “Do you want to fry one more sanma (a type of seasonal fish eaten in fall)?” and the viewers got crazy with this one.
There were some legit names but most were for jokes, choosing names going along with the theme of fall foods and creatures (tuna, matsutake, karaage, grasshoppers, etc.)
There was “Akashiya, sanma mouipikki yaku?”(Akashiya, do you want to fry one more sanma?) which was the funniest one. Akashiya Sanma is a very famous Japanese comedian and it’s very genius of the viewer to connect the person with the food. I laughed straight for like 10 min when I first listened to this (I still laugh just remembering it. The double-entendre!!!)
Literally any episode with Tsuda is chaotic (this isn’t the last time where he shows up)
At the end of the episode, Vincent’s VA couldn’t stop laughing and messed up his lines multiple times (I don’t blame him everything is just so funny)

IkeVamp Radio: Character Info
Based on this episode
Which great person do you look up to?
Tumblr media
NAPOLEON: Oda Nobunaga
This is probably due to their 'conquests'. The hosts claim this info is probably a story from Sebastian to Napoleon. I can't find a source that mentions Napoleon admiring Nobunaga.
MOZART: Johann Christian Bach
This is more historically accurate. While both csme from different musical period, Bach as Barouque and Mozart as classical, the latter turned to Bach for inspiration. The excessiveness of Baroque aesthegics allows the reader to read the inside space and outside space of the text---- may it be architecture, music, or literature.
LEONARDO: Michaelangelo
Both respect their own aesthetics. Thd former on light in paintings, while the former on sculpture.
FAVORITE BODY PART
Tumblr media
Napoleon: Neck and shoulders. Lol cliche for a vampire.
Mozart: voice, as in actually shows emotions.more than the face.
[ honestly, Mozart's route is another one that surprised me. He was s littke like Jonah, but more polite and awkward. He is quite aggressive with his feelings once he realizes it.]
Leonardo: laps because it's soft and he likes lap pillow.
[this sly adult. He is such a sly sdult in the main and event routes. Hahsha. I liked Leonardo's route but he is too perfect at times. Arthur stole me. Hahaha.]

Hunter MC
To understand this post you’re going to have to read this post
It’s about Vampires and how they react to different frequencies and how it can make them go feral, but in this Ikevamp scenario, horny as all hell.  CAUSE YOU’RE ALL HORNY BITCHES.
Mc comes through the door to 19th century Paris and is stuck with 11 Vampires.  Well.  This MC is a vampire hunter back in her time so this doesn’t do any good for the guys.  Of course she doesn’t have most of her equipment, but she’s able to test a theory that she has.
She agrees that she won’t kill them, but that doesn’t mean she won’t harm them.  Leonardo, Comte, and Sebastian keep a close eye on her just to be sure.
Mc stays in her room most of the time.  She has a small radio that she’s  using to test her theory.  This radio sends out different frequencies, and she’s trying to figure out how vampires react to different frequencies.  She turns it on, and off again.  All you hear is Arthur from the next room yelling “WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT” and that’s how she knew it worked.
She didn’t always have it on, it does have negative side effects in her favor.  She would maybe use it 3 or 4 times through the day.  Sometimes in the middle of the night to see if they’ll wake up from it.
Now Purebloods react differently  to these frequencies.  So does Mozart due to his sensitive hearing.  MC will be in her room messing with the radio and next thing she knows she hears Leonardo from outside yelling “WILL YOU FUCKING STOP THAT.” he hasn’t been able to have peaceful sleep.
Isaac is going insane.  He just wants to do science and look at stars.  He decides he going to give MC a taste of her own medicine and tries using what he has to make a frequency that will bother her.  But it isn’t that easy.  He turns it on and it makes his ears ring and he turns it off.
Isaac made himself temporarily deaf, which he finds out really isn’t that bad.  MC knows what he tried to do and pats him on the back and tells him he did good for trying.
So a while later MC is in the library and Isaac walks in and goes across the room and looks at MC directly in the eye and runs his nails across a chalk board, flips her off and leaves.  Not exactly the same effect but MC in cringing and has goosebumps.  He can’t hear anything so he doesn’t mind just standing there and doing it over and over again.  When he regains his hearing a few days later he is tempted to just keep making himself deaf so he doesn't have to hear Arthur and Dazai.
Some frequencies are even soothing and will cause them to fall asleep.  She doesn’t use this one often because she’s rather torture them while she’s there.
Now Lessers and Purebloods hear different.  So they have different effects.  Remember Vamps having a heat cycle? Well there’s a frequency that can trigger that in Purebloods.  So while all the Lessers are in agony Leonardo and Comte are just horny.
Jean hears the frequency and is like JESUS IS SPEAKING TO ME AGAIN
Now this heat isn’t has strong as it would normally be, and this time for some reason they are territorial over MC.  Meanwhile MC is like “I kill vampires, I don’t fuck them”  But purebloods in heat also rubs off on humans, meanwhile she’s starting to get attracted to them.
At this point everyone is jealous of Will not living in the mansion.  MC is able to basically control them using these frequencies and they can’t wait until that door opens to be able to kick her out.

Dice be Nice event Rolls Reveal
Hello, friends!
As you might have noticed, I closed off the requests for rolls for Dice be Nice. I got a total of 19 requests, whoop-whoop! (Oh, well, 18. The 19th one was completely staged and added for my enjoyment only, haha - yes, yes, it was the third part to the Radio Call).
Either way. It will take me a moment to write down all of them, but I decided to do a little reveal regardless - namely, to show you which characters were rolled for and with which AUs.
I would also like to add a little thing here - I will do my best to connect all the stories within one AU. It may be just details, but I will do my best! >:3 Although I’m not quite sure whether I’d like to keep the fandoms separate. We shall see, I suppose?

Tease
Ikevamp Leonardo fanfic, occurs after Ch. 10 but before the midpoint in Ch. 11 of the main route. Approx 1500 words.
This is the smutty version of Little Tease. NSFW!
First: That First Night
Previous: A Little Heat
“So . . . the internet.” Leonardo’s compagna sighed. “I don’t know how else to explain it to you. It’s - it’s like a book. One where there’s an answer for every question but sometimes the answer isn’t true. Or complete. And it’s also a place you can talk to people. And look at pictures. And watch movies.”
“So all of these things live in that little glass case in your purse?” Leo waited intently on his compagna’s reply. She was more willing to give these answers than Sebas. The butler kept tossing out silly concerns like ‘paradox’ and ‘disruptions to the timeline’. Nonsense. It wasn’t as if Leonardo planned to share this knowledge.
She chewed on her lip, thinking about it before replying. “Sort of? It’s more like, this phone -” she took out the smart phone and held it in front of him, “just shows the page. Like a screen in the movie theater. But the picture - the information - comes from someplace else.”
Leonardo nodded. “That makes sense, but then how is it projected when you move that thing around all the time? And what are all those shiny bits inside?” He remembered vividly what the ‘phone’ looked like when taken apart. Sebastian was not terribly pleased about that experiment, not even after Leo put it back together for him.
“That’s more like, uhm, like radios? Those exist now right? The signals go through the air and the phone receives them.”
“Radios?” Leonardo looked at her expectantly. This was another new thing. Something Sebas, that tight-lipped capra hadn’t mentioned.
His compagna sighed. “I don’t think I should be telling you about all this. It will ruin the surprise!”
“Cara, please. It will be years and years before these things come to pass. And you know all about them now. It is only fair - I answer your one question a day.”
“Barely,” she muttered. Then shrugged and sat back in the big leather chair. “I’m not really good with technical stuff, Leonardo. I can’t really explain how it all works. You could probably just ask Comte to bring back some books or something, next time he uses the door.”
“I could,” he agreed. “But I want to hear you tell me about it first.” Leo grinned from where he sat on the floor. He grabbed her little stocking-clad foot and began to rub circles on her sole. “Doesn’t that feel nice?”
She blushed prettily and nodded. “Mmm- mmhmm. Yes.”
The response was just breathy enough to make him feel his own little surge of arousal. But no. No. He was only teasing her - not himself - for both their sake. “Then keep talking or -” he let go of her foot.
His compagna huffed as if she might argue. But after a moment of her internal battle, she held her foot back out to him. “Alright. Where was I? Radio?”
“Yes, what is that?” Leonardo began stroking her calf this time. Kneading the tense muscles in her leg.
“Radio is . . . sounds? I guess sounds that get sent through the air to receivers. Like this phone only, not as complex.”
Leo nodded. “That is interesting. But you can’t just hear these sounds? Unless you have a receiver?” He let his hands roam a little higher, but his cara was too involved in her answer to notice when he passed her knee.
“Right! The sounds are there- sound waves, but for radios, it’s radio waves. You have to have a special device to receive them and then put them into a form you can hear with your ear.”
“So this internet, it is like that - invisible waves - of many kinds, not just sound. And it goes to these . . . phones?” Her thighs were like silk, he thought. Soft. Firm. He caught a glimpse of her panties from where he sat. Dainty pink. He didn’t hear her answer his question. He couldn’t stop thinking about what lay under them, and how very close he was.
“Then there are websites. Those are like chapters, if you think of the internet like a giant -” She stopped, inhaling sharply.
Leonardo realized his hands, clearly acting with a mind of their own, had grazed the lace edge of her panties.
“W-what are you doing?”
He grinned at her, a slow, warm smile, honey-gold heat. “Giving you a massage. As I said. If you keep talking.” He let his fingers slip under the fabric, brushing lightly over her mound. Was this still teasing? Yes . . . her wide eyes and the blush creeping up her cheeks was proof.
“Ah . . . I, I’m not sure I can . . . with you . . .”
He stopped moving his hand, and raised an eyebrow. “I can stop, cara. If that’s what you want?”
She leaned her head back against the chair and shut her eyes. “What I want . .”
Leonardo couldn’t help but slide his finger slowly into her downy cleft. It wasn’t a fair tactic, but then, what was fair in love or lust?
“Y-yes - I want - yes,” she moaned.
That was all the encouragement Leo needed. “Then keep talking, cara mia. Let me hear your sweet voice.”
He meant sighs or moans, even screams of pleasure, but she took him for his original threat.
“Right. Websites. Like books. No! No, like chapters. If the internet is -” Her toes curled as he began to strum her gently, as if she were a harp and he the player. She was hot to the touch, and already slick.
“Mmmm. Please, continue.” Leo’s smile was wicked, he knew, but he couldn’t help it. He wanted to tease her. And more than tease. He found the swollen, little pearl with his fingertips, barely touching.
“Ah, oh-books!” Her voice rose as she did her best to continue without regard to his touch. “So, you can- can look up books on - on anything. Lots of, I mean web -”
Leonardo’s other hand slid her panties to the side. “On anything, yes? You mentioned that.” He stroked her slowly at first. As if tuning a guitar or a harp - rhythmic, testing for the right sound.
“Oh god,” she leaned back, her thighs straining to open wider against the arms of the chair.
Ever helpful, Leo cupped her legs with his free hand and set them on top the sides. He could smell her arousal, and with her spread like this, he could see it too. Though he had not intended to, he leaned forward to taste. His tongue slid easily into her, and she clenched around the sudden intrusion.
The lecture was clearly done. His cara mia moaned, holding a hand over her mouth to silence her pleasure.
It only enticed Leo to go deeper, to seek more. He buried himself between her legs, his hands on her thighs. She was like liquor, he thought. Rich, and he was drunk on her. He wanted more. The sound of her pulse was wild in his ears as he moved from her core to suckle that hard, sweet pearl. He let go of one of her legs to slide wet fingers into her, still slow, refusing to hurry this moment.
“L-leo, I - ah!” Whatever she was going to say was lost as she closed her lips to hold in another moan. It escaped with ragged breath. “F-faster, please. Oh, I - I can’t . . .” Her hands grasped his hair, needy, pushing.
He laughed, breathing against her clit. “Don’t rush, cara. Let me enjoy this. And . . . don’t stop your voice. I told you, if I can’t hear you . . . I’ll stop.” The empty threat. He couldn’t stop now, unless she told him to. And her rocking hips begged the opposite.
Leonardo pressed into her with his long, artist’s fingers. His lips played lightly against her aroused nub, teasing.
His compagna gave him what he asked for. A moan of pure need, the edge of frustration.
It was in him to tease her like this for hours, to keep her at the edge of fulfillment until she thought she would go mad and then . . . but no. This was only teasing. Only play. He would not claim her body for his own.
Leonardo began to speed his thrusting fingers, settling into a fast rhythm with his lips and tongue. It took only a moment more before she bucked beneath him. Her legs closed around his head, locking him against her. Not that he minded. He licked her sweet juices as she came, her soft skin a prison he did not seek release from.
She finally let him go. Her breath was still too fast, and her cheeks were flushed.
He sat back, grinning like a cat in cream.
“I - I can’t believe you.” Her voice was low and raw. She stood and shook out her skirt, straightening her stockings. “I was supposed to - to just tell you about internet.”
“And you did.” Leonardo licked his fingers, unable to help himself. “You can always tell me more tomorrow.”
She gave him a wide-eyed look. Half accusation, half hopeful. The expression made him nervous. Surely, she knew this was all fun. Just play between two adults thrust together for a brief time. That was all it was to him. He ignored the twinge in his heart, the sudden weight on his chest at the thought.
“Maybe,” his cara said at last. “But . . . no more massages. I - I don’t think I can . . .” She looked almost sad.
Leo raised a hand to her, but she walked past him and out of the library. He felt a sudden surge of guilt. This was why, he thought, I should not be alone with her. I cannot tell myself no. Comte should have given this task to another.

when we die, where do we go? [gavin]
Tumblr media
+ this fic is for an anon that wanted an angsty Gavin fic, and also @queenvking and their request of a halloween karma inspired imagine! They don’t really figure out what Gavin’s circumstances are, but his shift still plays a big part! In addition, it was inspired by this call, gained from the evolution of Gavin’s card ‘fierce battle’. And because i took so long to write this, it’s also a semi-christmas themed one too~
→ pairing | gavin x reader (mlqc)
→ genre |vampire!au, angst w/ happy ending (ish 😳), someone’s heart is broken the usual, the mc actually trying to put her emotions aside for once in her goddamn life
→ word count | 8294 (22 pages of blood sweat and tears with a 30 minute-average reading time lol)
→ song rec | talking to the moon by bruno mars
→ note | it’s your local gavin stan here again with some hearty angst 🤠 also, originally gavin was supposed to die and then come back as a vampire (ikevamp style), but then I changed it to a coma because i’m a baby. and to make it better I did absolutely zero editing because I’ve been writing this for 2 months and just didn’t want to look at this doc any longer!! so, I’m sorry if there are any mistakes or inconsistencies~
Tumblr media
“What are you up to?”
Gavin’s voice comes through the speaker with pressed difficulty, but his words still send relief flooding through you. From the moment you pick up the call, it marks almost a week since you’ve said even a word to him. He had left quite suddenly then, after all, and only with a vague warning that he could possibly be gone for longer than usual.
“Gavin! You finally called! Is the mission over?” You can barely describe the emotions in your chest upon hearing your boyfriend’s voice again, your smile widening as you hear him chuckle on the other end.
“It’s over.” His laugh morphs into something greater frighteningly quickly, as if he’s sighing, or even groaning.
Your brows go taut as your smile begins to falters. “You sound kind of off…”
“It’s just because I’m coming off a mission.” There’s still at least a smile hiding in his voice, but it does little to ease your arising gut feeling. “I’m tired.”
“...Am I the first person you called?”
“It’s getting really late, you’re probably anxious. So I thought, I’d call you to-”
Gavin’s voice cuts off over the line with a sharp static noise that indicates a harsh cough. The reception is bad enough that the already unclear audio is painfully fuzzy, and the combined roadblocks have worry settling deep in your stomach before you can catch it.
You bite your lip. “Are you sure you’re alright?”
His gentle laugh is tired, but portrays all the emotions he can’t voice just yet. “I’m fine. Just a little tired. Really wanna sleep all of the sudden.”
“If you’re tired, tell me where you are and I can go there right away.” You say, your worries suddenly besting you before you can even think about the words that escape your mouth.
“No, dummy.” He laughs with a familiar adoration lining the gentle sound. “It’s classified, I can’t tell you where.”
Your expression twists slightly, worry settling firmly within your chest again. “..What are you going to do?”
“My partner is close. Relax. So just, talk with me awhile. I wanna hear your voice.”
“O-ok,” Your voice falters slightly, and you try your best to cover it with a cough. “What do you want to talk about?”
The line goes quiet for a few moments, but the stillness carries a silent meaning you aren’t yet sure that you want to decipher. There’s something you aren’t picking up, you’re sure, but you have nothing but the worry of a concerned girlfriend to back your thoughts up. You quickly tell yourself it’s only natural to be nervous for Gavin, so it’s completely possible you’re just imagining things after all.
“I was wondering, are you worried about me?” He asks, earning a small and very stupefied quirk of your brow.
“On a dangerous mission like this?” You whisper, sighing softly before continuing, “Of course.”
“You know…” He pauses, the faintest sound of a grunt filling the speaker before he continues. “Ah — forget it.”
“…Forget what? Why do you always stop halfway through? Don’t you know that worries me even more?”
A moment of silence ensures before he begins again, more hesitantly. You strain your ears trying to decipher if it’s for you or for himself, but begrudgingly give up when his voice returns to normal.
“This is the first time I actually… got afraid. Doesn’t that sound ridiculous? When a bullet whizzed by my ear, all I could think of was... I haven’t returned your calls yet.”
Tears pool at your lash at your boyfriend’s confession. “Oh, Gavin…”
“Are you crying..? Don’t cry. I’ll be back soon.”
You wipe away your warm tears before they can fall, but they still peek through in your voice as you say, “I’ll be waiting. We’ve still got a lot of things to do together.”
“I’ll take you to the movies, or maybe even karaoke.” He pushes out a strained snicker, admitting more of his condition than he has since you picked up the call. “I bet you’re dying to find out how tone deaf I am.”
You laugh along through your tears. “Nonsense! You’re obviously a good singer!”
Gavin is silent yet again for a few painstaking moments before he begins to whisper, his voice cracking slightly under change as he says your name. “___, I might not say it often, but I just want you to know that you matter so much to me. I’m so glad to have met you again. ``I love you.”
Looking back on that call, you don’t know why you refused to believe what you already knew was true. Maybe if you had, things would have gone differently. But even in the end, it seems that he was only trying to keep you from worrying, granted that this time, it may have almost cost him his life in return.
Gavin goes quiet a mere few minutes later, his phone slipping straight out of his hands to hit the ground hard. And yet, even as you already know what’s probably become of him by then, you still can’t bring yourself to hang up. His shallow breaths have almost completely ceased, and there’s barely an intelligible sound coming from the other side of the line save for the quiet echo of the blowing wind.
You let out a shaky breath as you continue to strain your ear for even the littlest signs of life, but can’t even find relief in his slight breath in and out.
He’s close to death and it kills you that you can’t do anything about it.
You soon hear footsteps rushing over on his side, and quite suddenly, you’re put to the ear of Gavin’s partner and good friend, Eli. You’d only met him briefly before, having barely managed to share even a single conversation back then because of your business with the STF. And because Gavin has never particularly been one to put you in any unnecessary danger, that was the last time you talked to him.
It’s depressing that your second meeting has to be in such gruesome circumstances.
“Sir, it’s still on.”
A voice you don’t recognise says these words faintly, and after a few seconds of radio silence, they wordlessly pick Gavin’s phone up and hand it over to Eli.
Eli mumbles briefly and unidentifiably before putting his mouth to the phone’s speaker
“___. I probably shouldn’t have expected anyone else but you to be the person he’d call in a time like this.”
You appreciate his attempt to lighten the atmosphere, but that’s far from what you need right now. You just go quiet in response, trying your best to gather yourself before speaking. “...Is this Eli?”
“It is.” You hear him swallow tighty as shuffling presumes in the background. “I’m so sorry, ___.”
Nothing but meaningless background noises fill the room, and your attention mixes with it. You can’t help but zone out of Eli’s consoling words and rather go to focus intently on keeping your sporadic heartbeat still.
“Please help him, Eli. He’s still alive, I know --”
“Ok.” He interrupts, inferably for your sake as words freeze in your throat. “I’ll try my best, ___.”
Your breathing is laboured and tears are streaming down your cheeks, but you don’t dare to try and stop them altogether. There’s only one thing — one person — that could manage to make you feel better right now, and that’s hardly yourself.
But for the time being, it’s impossible.
Gavin’s unit almost immediately decides to bring him into intensive care for fear of the possibility of his evol losing control under his fragile state of comatose. It’s rare for such things to occur in those stages, but everyone is in a silent agreement that it isn’t necessarily wrong to take precautions; especially since Gavin isn’t exactly typical. After all, his long years of being an evol agent have made his powers finely developed and too powerful to run freely when he’s in no place to control them.
You’re allowed to see him again around a week later.
You’d been given no specific date for the event upon your chat with Eli that day, but the time still comes faster than you thought it would. The organisation is a complicated web that you still don’t completely understand, so for all you know, those complications could have very well taken much longer.
Eli is the first to greet you when you go to the STF that day, and only silently leads you to the medical ward Gavin is being supervised in. There isn’t much for him to say, but it’s not like you necessarily have the capacity to ask about the details of your boyfriend’s death yet anyway.
“Be careful with him, okay? I know it’s a given, but we’re trying to make sure he’s stable before we make any other moves. So, just make sure not to touch the equipment.”
You give him your best smile in response. “Okay, I won’t. Thank you for everything.”
He nods, opting to give you some space as he retreats in the opposite direction. You aren’t sure that it would matter either way, though, as you stand there long after Eli had rounded the corner. It’s not like you can help your hesitation — your fear — but you still feel tense ignoring the very thing you’ve been pining after for days when it’s right in front of you.
You have no idea what to expect beyond that door.
Are his signs of stupor visible even after such a short amount of time? You hope to god that isn’t the case, praying that you’ll be able to look at your boyfriend again as someone who only looks as though they’re in a deeper sleep than usual.
But you’re afraid that you’ll open the door and find his body to be like the movies: pale, cold, and utterly lifeless without a shadow of a doubt. This the real world — your prayers certainly don’t have to be answered, and your fears won’t always be catered to. That’s what scares you the most.
And the very moment you finally gather enough courage to grip the door handle with your clammy palms and push it open, you know the world is too unforgiving.
The steady beeping from the heart monitor is barely noticeable over the heavy silence of the room, only a select few devices working actively to keep your lover alive. He is indefinitely stuck in a place of stagnicity, but there’s not even so much as an audible sound from the unit to tell you so. There’s only a slight buzz from the machinery aiding him, because sadly, there is so little left of Gavin to aid.
Your footsteps are heavy and rushed as you make your way over to him, but you still hesitate to touch him for a few fleeting moments. His skin is indeed frigid on the eye, yet it feels much colder to your warm touch.
Gripping his hand tightly as tears threaten to spill, you reach out to gingerly brush the bangs out of his eyes. You find that usually, due to the stress of his never-ending list of responsibilities, Gavin’s brows are usually slightly pinched. And yet, he looks uncharacteristically calm in the absence of consciousness.
You sweep a thumb lightly over his brow, swallowing harshly as you breathe back hot tears.
Gavin’s lying in front of you once again, yet, you still felt helpless. That didn’t change — it never had.
He’s alive in your memory, taking leaps and bounds into the past that only pushes the despair deeper into your stomach. You touch over every aspect of him in your head: every time he protected you, every time he sacrificed something for you, every time he kissed you—
It takes a lot to shake away the memories as your tears finally begin to spill.
You would do anything to rewind time. Anything to see him smile again, anything to have him next to you, alive and well again. Because that night he had called you, he was right: there really was so much you hadn’t experienced together.
Your eyes flit up to his face again, and you bite your quivering lip hard. The sobs that leave you aren’t languid nor graceful, and rather show the depth of your grief much better than any action does.
The reality of the situation is harsh, and unlike the movies, it doesn’t help you grow; it’s not a moment of staggering realisation. Instead, it’s despair clawing at your chest like a caged animal, and your headache blooming into a thorny flower that can hardly be called touching.
“Gavin,” You whisper this gently, your hand falling down to his cheek to tenderly brush your fingers over his cold skin. Placing a final kiss on your forehead with blurry eyes, you whisper to him.
“I love you.”
When we die, where do we go?
It’s certainly an abstract thought, one you’re not even quite sure you want to delve into, but continue to anyway upon the striking memory of Gavin’s cold skin under your fingertips. Though there’s hope for him to wake, of course, the awful possibility of death still looms over your head as a constant grim reminder.
Some describe the place after death as a paradise, where you’re gifted a golden halo and luxuries on the condition you lived an innocent life. While on the complete opposite side, it’s depicted as an inhumane switch over to a ghastly figure: ghosts, demons, put it how you will, all are perceived the same.
But you don’t want to think about what you believe, because to you, there’s no reason to.
Months go by where your angel is still absent, stuck in the dreadful place beyond life and yet still below complete death. His indefinite state of stagnicity continues to keep him well under surveillance at that time by not only the STF but also yourself -- all in hopes of a miracle bringing him back to you all.
His evol aiding him, his body finally healing, even a deity in the sky deciding that they’d made the wrong choice in taking him away: every single possibility is counted by you. And foolishly, it gives you hope.
To lean on the power of prayer alone is half witted and you’ve been made aware of that many times, but sadly, it’s the only chance you have, so you won’t let it slip through your fingers for small reasons like that.
You’ve been through so much with Gavin — from the time you’d reconnected to the last day you’d talked to him, you would take little of it back. He’s your partner partner in life that you feel proud to stand beside, and maybe it’s selfish, but you wish for his return more than anything else in the world.
Only, you know that you’ll have to prepare for the inevitable fate of the world turning a blind eye to your wishes once again.
It’s hard to continue on when such a huge piece of your life is suddenly missing, and in those months, you find yourself struggling more than you thought possible. But you’re grateful for the people that have chosen to stay by your side throughout the hard times, even if someone in particular was largely unprecedented.
But Victor’s help still means a lot to you.
In a way, he doesn’t change much from his usual self. He softens under your difficulties still, but continues to be his usual demanding and headstrong self for as long as it’s good for him. Yet Victor’s normally irritating traits are still surprisingly easy to repurpose to get you back on your feet, and they effectively act as a healthy buffer between you and reality for as long as he’ll allow it.
And with his help, you find yourself slowly clawing your way out of the hole you’ve been buried in for months. Slowly but surely, every hand he offers you eases you out of your pain with more success each time.
Winter rolls around and you’re feeling the best you have in a long time. Granted, it’s not amazing, but it’s still progress. You’re noticeably healthier, looser, even — and yet you still can’t help but hide the sadness and regret you feel. Because no matter what, you know that the one who’s given you so much will never live up to the person you’ve lost.
The upcoming holiday season is only another reminder of that, your nerves spiking at the thought of your first Christmas without Gavin. Though Victor is there to help, of course, you’re afraid that you’ll end up taking the change too hard.
After all, your hope for Gavin to wake is just as bright as the day you had shared that short call with him, but even more so now upon the timing. Because along with the season, it’s also been almost an entire year since then. Your longing for your boyfriend’s healing is stronger than ever as a result, and even beside others, you find yourself to be as lonely as can be without him.
Being healthier, being happier on the outside, all of it only hides what you can’t help but feel on the inside. The depressing situation leaves a bitter taste on your tongue that only grows with each passing day — and your grief turns into a monster you find yourself battling every single day.
Truly, you continue to believe that you’re at your limit every single day.
But then something changes. Something in the heavens, something in the deity that you’d pictured giving Gavin everything he wanted in the afterlife, something in fate. And slowly, the course of life starts to change, too.
The days have always tended to go by faster when you’re afraid of something. You’ve known that for a long time after being nervous for school presentations, job interviews, and even plain-old events throughout the years. But you think that nothing you’ve ever been through compares to now, when Christmas is suddenly only a few days away and there’s not even a single word from Eli on Gavin’s condition changing.
The sight of festivities is enough to make you nauseous with so much as even a glance. Yet still, that doesn’t stop your oh-so gracious caregiver from decorating his house on his own, stringing every light and hanging every ornament by his hands alone.
Tapping your fingers on the mahogany of Victor’s dining table one night he invites you over, you’re quickly broken out of your thoughts by a loud sigh.
“You know, you’re going to wear a hole in the table if you keep doing that, and it’s coming right out of your paycheck.”
Maybe you would have normally laughed, but his joke only harmlessly bounces off of you as you retract your hand and let it fall to your lap. “Oh. Sorry.”
SIlence ensues before Victor sighs again.
“...Is there something wrong, ___?”
His voice is a gentler one, the same he’d used when he’d found you trying to piece a glass back together with bloody hands all that time ago. It’s the voice that once gave you comfort, but now only offers guilt.
Your eyes shoot over to where he’s sitting on the couch across the room, slowly taking in the way he’s shut his laptop and now directs his full attention to you.
“It’s almost Christmas.” You say vaguely, forcing a smile as Victor’s brows go slightly taut. Thankfully, you don’t have to explain any more than that.
“I’m sorry, ___. It’ll be hard, but I know you can get through it.”
“Maybe,” You pick up your head as your smile drops. “But that’s not what I want to hear anymore.”
Victor returns your gaze, and under that action, you helplessly avert your eyes. Even with his limitless kindness over the past few months, you still can’t help the inexplicable wall between the two of you. Maybe it’s your own fault, or maybe it’s just a difference in viewpoints -- but whatever the case, your methods of fixation almost always seem to differ.
His voice goes uncharacteristically soft as he busies his hands with the computer sitting in his lap. “I’m sorry that I can’t help you as much. If there’s anything else I can do—“
He trails off when you blink in response, your adam’s apple bobbing as you fold your arms on the table in front of you.
“No, whatever I do in this situation is up to me. I’m grateful for your help, but you have nothing to do with what happens to me.” You sigh. “I can’t rely on you forever.”
You can’t see his eyes, but in a fleeting moment you do, you swear that they almost beg for your opinion to differ. It’s a kind gesture, you think, yet it’s unfortunately not something that’s very realistic.
Victor doesn’t push it, just standing up and nonchalantly walking past you to the sink. He’s never been very persistent to you, and though that might’ve bothered you before, you’ve never been happier about his weird quirk than you have in that moment.
“Dummy,” he mumbles, his quiet words lost to you above the sound of the faucet running. You sit there in comfortable silence as he washes off his dish, and almost jerk in surprise when he starts speaking again a few minutes later.
“Celebrate Christmas with me this year.”
It’s blunt, and the wording doesn’t make it sound like an offer as much as it does a demand. But only because you’ve come to know Victor, you know his words are as genuine as they come.
“...I couldn’t impose on something like that.” You shake your head.
“You wouldn’t be imposing on anything,” He says, reaching casually for the towel next to him as he dries his plate off. “I have a function to go to that day, and though I was originally going to go alone, I thought it sounded like something you might like.”
You process his words for a few moments. He thought it sounded like something I’d like? Is Victor not feeling well?
“Are you sure…?”
“If I wasn’t sure, would I have asked?”
Ah, there he is.
The days after that seem to tick down faster and faster until before you know it, you’re waking up alone in bed on Christmas morning with an entirely new sensation running through your chest. As you force your eyes open to meet the forenoon sun, the change in atmosphere the occasion has warranted suddenly makes you hyper-aware of the empty space next to you.
Sorry Victor, you think tiredly, but now begins the start of what will probably be the most awful day ever.
You drag yourself out of bed after a few minutes and walk through your sparsely decorated apartment to the kitchen in favour of caffeine over anything else. But unfortunately, even when partaking in such a mundane action, Gavin manages to be everywhere. The hand you reach blindly into the cabinet comes out with a pretty cerulean mug -- only one of the many things he had gifted you last christmas.
The mug almost seems to mock you in your hand, but you mentally push it away and just put it beneath the coffee machine’s filter without another thought. You’ve gotten horridly good at ignoring your emotions over the period of time you’ve been left alone, and though you’re certain it’s not a good thing, at times it proves to be one of your greatest assets.
Because the more you can ignore the sinking feeling in your chest, the more you’re used to being without it.
You know undoubtedly that Christmas morning for most is a happy occasion -- children rush downstairs to a heartily decorated tree with their parents in wait, screams of delight from people of all ages when receiving a desired gift, and especially gatherings for family, friends, and lovers alike. But for the first time, Christmas means something horribly new to you.
Sipping your coffee and trying your best to ignore the scorching feeling of it, you sit on your couch and imagine yourself sinking back into the cushions. Maybe if you did, the day would pass by unnoticed. But then again, that would also mean that you would miss Victor’s invitation, and you were admittedly curious of the man’s vague offer.
Along with the upcoming holidays, a large part of your attention in the past weeks has been on what Victor said that night at his house. He had refused to tell you specifically what it was, only choosing to disclose that it seemed like something you would like and dismissing the conversation from there. It was a very characteristic thing of him to do -- and if you weren’t already up to your knees in his antics, maybe you would have dived a bit deeper into it.
You sigh out a breath of warm air at the thought, the coffee’s previously sweet aroma coming out half-baked. But the strange smell doesn’t even so much as vex you anymore as you cradle the warm mug between your knees, pulling your phone out of your pyjama pocket in hopes to distract yourself in the few hours you have until Victor comes around.
“You’ll be cold if you only wear that. Put on a hat or a scarf, if you have one.”
You shake your head and put on a smile as you shrug on your jacket later in the day. “No, I don’t need to. I’m used to the cold, don't worry.”
A small sound of discontent escapes Victor’s lips.
“You know, it doesn’t matter how used to it you think you are,” He says firmly, his hands instinctively going up to grip the lapels of his own coat. “You’re still going to be cold where we’re headed.”
You give him a suspicious look as you reach for a hat hanging on the hook by the door in your apartment, not breaking eye contact even as you pull it over your head as far as it can go.
When your eyes are momentarily covered, you swear you hear him chuckle.
“Is this good?” You ask.
“No, too much,” he mumbles, not caring to hide the laughter lining his voice as he reaches out and softly tugs it above your eyes.
The moment the soft fabric comes up into its rightful place, you’re met with Victor’s eyes awfully close to your own. And though you can’t fight the embarrassing heat that rushes to your cheeks, you just smile as if unaware of it.
“Fine, Mr I Know Everything, is that suitable for you?”
Something begins to shift in his eyes. but it’s barely for even a second, so you have a hard time catching it before it goes away again.
“You can let yourself think that,” he answers vaguely, a small smile curving on his lips as he turns back towards the door. “But we’ll know for sure later.”
You swallow back any thoughts daring to jump out and just nod, plastering on the same smile that you’ve been refining for months.
“I swear I won’t be cold! Now let’s go, we’ll be late if we don’t leave now.”
Going ahead of him to reopen your apartment’s door, you take a quick look behind you again and usher him forwards. Victor gives you a slightly scrutinising look, but well accustomed to it, you only stare back as he ignores you and goes past you.
Where you’re going -- the very place he’d so dutifully refused to tell you -- is a mystery to you up until the moment he gets started on the route.
“Wait, you’re taking me there?” You blurt out as soon as you put what you think are the pieces together, looking over at him from the passenger seat. Victor gives no response but the slight twitch of his lips, but that’s answer enough for you.
LFG is almost notorious for hosting elaborate Christmas parties each year: events that are raved about by the men and the women who attend, though still second only to the CEO’s judgment. You don’t know the specifics, but Victor has never particularly seemed to enjoy the holiday season, even when you tended to be more enthusiastic about it in the past.
But even if the yearly Christmas event had been one of your guesses when Victor originally mentioned his offer back then, it was still impossible to guess any further as the event tends to vary drastically per year. And since that’s still the best your guess can do, you opt to stare out the window and try to clear your head instead. Because right now, at least you’re in a suitable headspace to distract yourself from strong sense of loneliness that’s taken great care in hiding itself.
Gavin has been off your mind since this morning, but you know that the sensation will be short-lived. It always is.
Victor catches your attention again by turning the key in the ignition, effectively tearing you away from your thoughts as you go to look out the window. And you can’t help your jaw dropping at the sight in front of you.
This year, LFG has revamped the entire park to look like some kind of winter wonderland. Festive decorations make the scene merry, booths look like they’re filled to the brim with goods, and not to mention the main feature -- the beautiful frozen lake designated specifically for ice-skating. It’s wonderful, and for a few moments, an overwhelming sense of joy comes over you.
“Victor!” The pitch of your voice goes slightly higher when you turn around to look at him. “Your company did all this?”
Victor only stares at you for a few moments, as if not anticipating your reaction, and just chuckles.
“Of course, dummy. Who else would’ve?”
You ignore his snide comment and turn towards the window again, sighing slowly in relief as you take in the scenery yet again. You thought that having a good time today would be impossible, but now looking at everything from a different perspective, you think that maybe it’s your duty to have as much fun as you usually do -- if not for yourself, for Gavin.
“Are you ready or what?”
“Yes!”
On Victor’s cue, you get out of the car and walk ahead of him, peering inside booths and sizing everything up as you go. Just as you first predicted, the booths are overflowing with everything ranging from traditional ornaments to steaming baked goods, only, they seem to have everything in between in addition.
“You really prepared this well,” You say, phrasing it as a compliment as you lean slightly in front of a booth to pick up a small stuffed polar bear. “Everything is so nice.”
He’s quiet from behind you, but you can almost see his small content nod in your mind’s eye.
“Good. See anything you like? Consider it a present.”
You whip around at his offer, brow quirked.
“And it won’t come out of my wage this time?”
His mouth curls up, his expression almost sour. “What do you mean this time? You think I’d do that? Or in case you didn’t realise, it’s Christmas, ___.
“I know, I’m sorry!” You can’t help but laugh at his reaction. “It was only a joke.”
Victor grumbles about it but doesn’t look unhappy.
“But, Victor, I think I know what I want.” You say, gripping the little polar bear in your hands and turning around to him. His eyes don’t meet the stuffed toy right away, but when they do, he doesn’t look very surprised.
“Are you sure?” He asks. “It’s only been a few minutes.”
You nod, looking down into the toy’s familiarly amber eyes with a small smile twitching on your lips.
“I’m sure.”
You hand it over to Victor, but as the cashier notices him walking up, she freezes. Her face heats up as recognition flashes through her eyes, but he promptly ignores her and goes to reach into his coat pocket.
“Sir,” She sputters, shaking her head as a nervous laugh escapes her throat. “There’s no need for you to pay.”
He ignores her yet again, pulling out a leather-bound wallet.
“No matter who I am,” He begins, his voice dropping into a brusque tone. It’s oddly chilly compared to his voice only moments before, but why, you don’t know and don’t ask. “It’s irresponsible to assume I don’t have to pay.”
Her face gets redder as the presumably kind thing to do blows up in her face. And after she apologises, they continue the process in painful silence that’s hurtful to even you, someone who’s not inherently in the conversation.
“Thank you for the offer,” You say this from beside Victor, smiling in what you hope is reassurance. “It wasn’t wrong of you to do that, and I appreciate your thought a lot.”
The young woman seems grateful for your interruption, and nods before bowing her head slightly. But, you don’t catch the curious look in Victor’s eyes as she says, “Please have a good rest of your night.”
Victor leads you away from the booth in what would look like a normal saunter to any onlookers, but knowing him as you do, you see the things no one else does. It’s definitely not something you see from him often, but that only means that you have the sight of it deeper engraved in your memory:
Something has just surprised him.
“Victor?” You reach over and put a hand on his arm as you walk, quirking a brow when he looks over at you with a slightly conflicted gaze. “Are you okay?”
You both stop near the middle of the makeshift square, and seeing your expression clearly under the lights now, Victor only sighs.
“I’m fine.”
And that’s about all you get out of him, but you know not to push it any further.
Soon enough, his mood swings are the least of your concern anyway. Because as you go around with the bag over your arm for the rest of the night, you feel a sudden yet horrible sense of nostalgia washing over you. It’s the same issue every year during the holidays, good memories calling up deja vu that still lead forth fulfilling nights, but this year, it’s different.
Your nostalgia is a constant cycle instead of a straight feeling, wherein the twisting memories are replaced by sadness further on. But for what feels like the first time, that same melancholic feeling is being accompanied by an out of place rush of happiness.
And for the first time, genuinely, since you were told that Gavin might not wake, you feel happy.
You feel nothing but triumph as Victor is dumbfounded by your laugh, like the sound itself is foreign to him. You enjoy things that you couldn’t before because of pressing memories, and like that you’re able to see everything with a clearer gaze again. You don’t have such a foreboding force crushing down on you, and it feels amazing to live without as much grief, even if it might only be for one night.
But then, going later and later into the night and finally having to acknowledge that it’s all good as over -- well, that’s a different story. There’s the same kind of purpose in each step that you’d been gifted hours before, but they come with less strength now. They’re dull, almost as if because the night is coming to an end, the effects of everything are suddenly beginning to wear off, too.
It’s a shame, you think, because you really could get used to a feeling like that.
You and Victor are some of the only people left in the park when you look at your watch, but you don’t mind much. Actually, even if you have to be here alone, you’d probably still choose to stay a bit longer. Because, maybe it’s selfish, but you don’t want to be sad again.
Surprise jolts through you as a hand comes down to land on your shoulder, effectively breaking your thoughts, but you relax again when your eyes shoot up to meet Victor’s.
“Stay here for a minute. I have to discuss something with a park manager.”
Not able to find the words to respond, you just nod.
And soon enough, you’re alone just as you wished. It’s not exactly what you’d imagined, and if anything, you only feel desolate standing in what’s supposed to be such a happy place by yourself.
Quite fed up with all the twists and turns the emotions in your chest are doing in those moments, you stuff your frozen hands into your coat pocket with enough force to send a small shiver through you. But while doing so, you remember your phone, still remaining dutifully in the same pocket you’d put it in at the beginning of the day. The surface is fairly cold, having been off for so long, but you still feel some sort of silly peace when the screen flashes to tell you it’s powering on again anyway.
You lose that sense fairly quickly.
The phone screen turns on almost immediately, signified with a small vibrate at the palm of your hand. And when it does, you’re met with a sight you never thought you’d see. The lock-screen, which would normally be a cute picture you’d taken while in the mediterranean with Gavin, was now completely covered by a mass of missed calls and texts from Eli.
Your breath freezes in your throat as your eyes take in the contents of the screen, and for a moment, it seems like all of your senses are gone. You want to assume the best, you want to assume the worst -- but at the least, you want to assume that everything is okay. It’s only been a couple hours since everything was made, and you hold on tightly to the belief that whatever happened, Eli handled it.
With trembling fingers and an equally trembling heart, you call him back.
“___!”
He picks up on the first ring, and you feel horrible immediately thinking that you have to prepare yourself for the worst. You’ve only been conditioned to feel that way, after all, and it’s admittedly a hard habit to break.
“Is everything okay?” You ask, a little more frantically than you’d meant to. “My phone’s been off all day.”
Eli only sends a breathy laugh coming through the speaker, leaving your nerves to hang for a few more seconds before delivering the final blow.
“___, I’ve never believed in Christmas miracles, but he’s awake. Gavin’s really back for real this time.”
Your heart stops.
Turning the words over and over in your head, you can’t help but feel surprised when you come up without a single clear explanation. There’s an indescribable type of joy that clouds your thoughts, but even so, you still know bright as day -- your prayers, albeit late, have finally been answered.
“...Are you okay?”
You snap out of the haze you’re in to Eli’s curious voice over the speaker, and quickly apologise as you wipe the tears from your eyes.
“I’m fine.” You croak, sniffing as you try and wipe the embarrassed tint from your cheeks. “Thank you so much, Eli. You have no idea how much this means to me.”
Able to hear the man’s bashfulness in his response, you find it hard to hold back a smile.
“Would it be okay for me to come and see him? I know there’s probably still complications--”
Eli interrupts you before you can so much as get the meat of your sentence out. “No, yes! Please do! The guy’s been asking about you since the moment he could form complete sentences!”
You pull your lips together in an attempt to stop the noise raising in your throat, although it doesn’t work very well. So, you just nod and nod silently in hopes that will convey your emotion enough, and then inevitably realise how much of an extreme sport it is to keep from crying when you really, really want to.
“___?”
Another voice calls your name from behind you, effectively startling you out of your thoughts. So, you quickly finish your conversation with Eli and try to at least make yourself presentable before turning around.
Once you do, you’re met with Victor, who stands there patiently with his arms crossed over his chest. But his calm expression melts into one of confusion once he glimpses at your face.
“Are you okay?” He quickly walks over to you as you curse yourself inside your head for not doing a better job of cleaning up. “Why are you crying?”
You stumble over your words, looking up at him with teary eyes and a wide smile you can’t seem to wipe off your face. “Victor--”
He puts a hand on your shoulder, still hesitating slightly after all these months.
“Yes?” He whispers quietly, prompting you on.
“He’s finally awake.” You laugh through tears, sniffing as you wipe your eyes. “Gavin’s finally awake.”
You feel as if he’s happy for you, but because of your hands obstructing your eyes, you don’t see the depressingly blank look on his face.
But, he thinks, maybe it’s better that she doesn’t.
“If he’s awake,” Victor hesitates again before taking his hand off your shoulder and stepping past you. “Then let’s go. I’ll bring you home so you can change and go wherever you need to.”
Nodding gratefully, you go after him and decide that you’re ready to face whatever comes your way from then on.
“Thank you so much, Victor. For everything” You offer a smile to him as you walk back to his car, but yet again, don’t notice the pain in eyes as he smiles back.
“Anything.”
Eli runs up to you the moment you set foot in the STF around an hour later. A healthy time, you think, but not nearly quick enough for your racing thoughts.
Things like ‘what if something happens before I can get there?’ or ‘what if he goes under again while I’m stuck in traffic?’ rush through your head, but luckily, Eli’s there to cajole you otherwise.
“How is he?”
You ask this tentatively as Eli punches in a passcode for the medical ward. He doesn’t so much as look up from what he’s doing, but you still see his eyes soften with your words.
“He’s fine, apart from the obvious.” Eli laughs at his own dry joke, and  “It’s just strange, how he’s awake all of the sudden. I guess I’m not really supposed to be talking about it, but it’s only you.”
You try to push him along with your eyes, and catching your gaze, he does.
“When he woke up…” Eli trails off as his finger hovers in the air, as if just over the last needed number in the keypad. “His injuries were almost completely healed.”
Your brows knit. “What? Healed?”
Eli shakes his head as the door gives an affirmative beep and slides open.
“Yeah. It’s weird, isn’t it? He was still wrapped up in those awful bandages and hanging onto life support a few days ago, and now he’s awake with barely any side effects.”
You don’t know whether to be curious or concerned at the information.
“What side effects does he have, then?”
Assuming the worst, you can’t help but be surprised when Eli just shrugs, talking as he turns a corner. You follow in haste, but are stopped almost as quickly at the sight in front of you.
It’s not like you haven’t been in the medical ward before, but the sight of various officers unconscious makes you slightly sick to your stomach. Some are having their last days, some their worst -- it all stirs something in you. You can only be glad your boyfriend isn’t one of them.
“He’s a little drowsy, so we can’t get much more than that.” Eli gets your attention again, to where you realise that he stopped to wait for you. “But for right now, it’s only a matter of expecting the worst so nothing else happens.”
Quickly apologising, you pick up walking next to him again, where he calmly and understandingly resumes.
“Whether it has something to do with his evol or another thing entirely, at least he’s making progress.” He muses, his lips twisting slightly in thought.
You can only nod in silent agreement.
Something doesn’t sound right to you, but it wouldn’t do any good to point out what everyone already knows. Gavin is awake, and maybe Eli’s right: perhaps that’s all that should matter for now.
Eli stops before you even realise it, and in mere moments, you’re staring up at the door to the very room that months ago you never wanted to set foot in again. But noticing your repetitious reluctance, Eli vouches to say one last thing before walking off.
“He’s been really stressed out, asking if you were okay like that. Treat him well, ___.”
Your insides melt at his soft words, and with tears blooming, you nod and turn back to the door. You’re alone in the hall again, almost as if you had travelled back 8 months in time, but this time it’s different. You’re here to see your lover alive.
So, for a change, you push the door open without a second thought.
“Be careful when eating, it seems your teeth have shifted a bit more.” A nurse chastises Gavin while she replaces an IV. “We don’t want any long-term side effects.”
You try not to draw attention to yourself, but the natural human instinct for eyes to be drawn towards motion sells you out first.
Gavin is frozen where he sits, but the nurse standing above him only sends you a patient smile. She’s an older woman close to what looks like salt and pepper hair, with faint lines decorating her face to show years of passing emotions.
The nurse hums. “Miss ___? I was told to wait for someone.”
You can only nod, forcing your eyes away from Gavin to acknowledge the woman for even just a second.
She gives you a once-over and smiles again, as if silently sharing a secret with you. But, you’re not nearly paying enough attention to give it much thought. Still, you hope it’s in good graces as she whispers her wishes for you to have a good holiday when walking past you to the door.
“...Gavin?”
You can only force out his name as the door clicks shut behind you.
“___.”
He sounds breathless, almost yearning, and the sound of his voice alone brings lost tears crashing over your cheeks.
Gavin isn’t one to show many emotions unabashed, but in that moment, you swear he doesn’t hold anything back any longer. Unsaid words flood from his eyes just as easily as tears come from yours, and in a moment, you’re next to him again.
Touching him again is rejuvenating.
It feels silly to think, but you swear that you can feel everything falling back into place again when he wraps his arms around your waist. It’s as if his touch is somehow forcing bad memories away: the bad memories of crying yourself to sleep; the bad memories of missing him so badly that your chest would hurt; and the horrible sinking realisation that you might not ever see him breathing again -- it all pacifies when you felt his breath on your skin.
“Are you okay?” He asks this softly, his voice slightly muffled by your jacket. You can’t do anything but shake your head.
“Always worrying about me,” You try to click your tongue through your whispers, although the action is just sad. “Even until what I thought was the end. Worry about yourself first, would you?”
It should be a joke, but neither of you laugh. He only sighs into your chest in a silent apology as you pull him closer, and you try to find pride in the possibility that just maybe, you’re giving him the same feeling he’s giving you.
“What about you?” Your teary mumble is lost along with your fingers in the tendrils of his hair, but the words still manage to reach him perfectly anyway. “Eli told me that you’re quite the superhuman.”
He doesn’t answer you with words, only nodding in confirmation. It’s almost as if he doesn’t want to talk about it, but even if that is the case, you still understand. It’s likely that he knows just as much as everyone else does about his condition, but that doesn’t make it any less of a touchy subject.
“I hope everything is cleared up soon.” You say this softly in retraction. “It might be selfish, but I really, really want you to come back.”
“It’s not selfish,” You can feel his quiet laugh as he speaks, and it’s almost as if the heavy atmosphere from only a few seconds ago dissipated with his smile alone. “I missed you, a lot more than I should have been able to while I was like that.”
You finally pull back to look him in the eye, and he takes your hand in his with a such a swift motion that it shouldn’t even be possible for a man that was on the brink of death not even days ago.
But you don’t dwell on it. You don’t want to dwell on it. It might be strange, supernatural, even, but all that matters to you in that moment is that your lover is finally awake in your arms again.
And you hope with all your heart that it will stay that way.

Fun facts abt residents according to Ikevamp Radio (ヴァンなま) Part 2
Continuing with the Ikevamp radio findings (& some stuff w/the VAs) I have episodes 4-7 this time!!! (also pls take this with a grain of salt bc idk how much of this is canon according to Cybird)
Episode 4: It’s just Vincent and Sebas’s VAs!!
youtube
Morishi emphasizes that he’s a special guest, not a permanent part of the show, Makki says that there should prob be only one MC. They settle on Morishi being a guest-regular
ANYWAYS ONTO THE BATH SEGMENT
Vincent’s learning to sing the song Sebas taught Leo in episode 1 & 3 (for anyone curious, the original song is called Ii yu dana [いい湯だな] by the Drifters [ザドリフターズ] and it was a song the group sung at the end of their TV show/stage from the 70s–late 90s. Sebas knowing that song would mean he was alive during this time period)
Sebas hears him hum, Vincent is embarrassed, telling him to forget he ever saw him singing
During the day, Vincent saw Sebas cutting and sorting the gardens, to which Sebas references Nippon Mukashi Banashi (Folktales of Japan) where so many Japanese folktales start with a character cutting grass/weeds
Vincent recalls that Theo called MC “hondje” and “dog”, worries that she might be offended at those names
Sebas reassures him that MC has a strong spirit, and shouldn’t worry abt her much
Sebas comments that while Vincent and Theo are siblings, they have completely different personalities
Vincent answers that many people have stated this, wonders what he has to do to make others believe that they are brothers
Sebas has Vincent do impressions of Theo, starting w/Vincent calling Sebas “hondje” but Vincent just calls him “wanchan” (doggy/puppy) instead
Sebas makes a weird/loud noise, saying that that’s just an angel playing with a puppy (the part where Sebas loses his sanity. Actually he’s losing more of it as the episodes continue)
Vincent relents, quietly mumbling “hey, hondje” to Sebas
Sebas says he’s so close, just needs to be a bit more intimidating
Vincent repeats “hey, hondje” with more determination, Sebas replies “I have received Master Vincent’s ‘hey hondje!!!!’” (Sebas is crazy I swear)
Sebas pressures Vincent to say “I will make you my dog,” like Theo, to which Vincent questions if Theo has ever said that
Sebas quickly answers yes, forcing Vincent to say the phrase but worded more respectfully “I will make you my dog, okay?” (peer pressure is never okay, ESPECIALLY concerning Vincent)
Sebas is satisfied with the result, saying that the two brothers are really related
(I LEGIT DON’T KNOW WHAT’S WITH THIS EPISODE)
Sebas confesses that he just wants to see Vincent as a sadist and Vincent just sweat-drops
In this episode’s “Can you tell me… your name?” segment… (aka my fav part of the livestream—lol it’s not even the skit in the thermae)
Sebas’s chosen line was “I’ve boiled the pumpkin” (this was done during Halloween, that’s what’s with the pumpkin). There were a lot of food-related names, so Sebas would say “Cucumber, I’ve boiled the pumpkin” or “Miso soup, I’ve boiled the pumpkin” and many others (mushroom, pig, tomato, sweet potato, radish, shiitake, hanpen)
There was also one in which Morishi said “Aramaki, I’ve boiled the pumpkin” to which Makki replied “thank you,” and another with “Vincent, I’ve boiled the pumpkin”
Episode 5: feat. Theo’s VA Sato Hisanori & Earl Rose (ローズ伯爵)
youtube
First episode where there is video in the livestream (it was previously just audio)
(I love watching VAs play their roles so this episode is prob one of my favs)
Sato realizes what kind of crazy show this is when he has to say “konvampire” instead of “konbanwa” (good evening) as a greeting. I feel like every guest other than Tsuda has said this (at least implied) but Sato just straight up says this
Sato calls Makki “nii-san” (big brother) when they first greet each other, referencing their roles as Vincent and Theo (also, fun fact, the two VAs are born in the same month of the same year)
Sato asks the viewers who they like the most out of Vincent, Theo, and Sebas. The viewers overwhelm them with calls of “Vincent!!!”
Sato asks for them to stop, changing questions, asking the viewers who wears the best clothes out of three (Makki, Morishi, and Sato). The viewers still say Makki, though there are some saying Sato
Earl Rose is a guest for this episode. He is the lord (read: owner) of the vampire cafe in Ginza. (he’s basically here to promote the ikevamp collab w/his Vampire Cafe) Sato looks freaked out/uncomfortable by the earl. The three eat the collab foods and drinks provided (it looks pretty good tbh)
NOW ONTO THE “I LOVE YU” SEGMENT
Vincent sinks down to his shoulders in the waters, Theo can’t find him for a bit
Theo and Vincent enjoy spending time w/each other
Sebas can hold his breath underwater (in a hot bath) for 5 min. He did so to not interrupt the two brothers’ conversation (Sebas becoming more and more ooc)
Vincent stated that his previous record was 3 min 46 sec. Sebas said that “as a butler of this mansion, I shall keep on improving” (Theo doesn’t know what the heck is happening, but Vincent seems to be enjoying himself so he let’s go)
Vincent & Theo have never fought (as expected of such bros. Now that I’m rereading this I’m sure this is reinforced in various routes so maybe I don’t need this info)
Sebas (who tries to create some tea---figuratively) asks Vincent what he would do if his pancakes were covered by tons of syrup by Theo, to which Vincent replies “I will give those pancakes to Theo.”
Sebas switches over to Theo, asking him what he will do if Vincent steals his syrup before he can eat the pancakes. Theo answers “Easy. I’ll give the pancakes to my brother. It would mean that he wanted to eat pancakes so badly that he would steal the syrup”
There’s around 2-3 times where Theo almost gets angry at Sebas and Vincent has to stop him (pats his head and stuff)
Theo asks why Sebas is acting weird, to which Vincent believes its bc he’s working too hard, so they should help him out & fulfill his hopes/wishes
Sebas has a voice recorder??? Theo doesn’t know what it is
Theo doesn’t approve being recorded, but Sebas goes to Vincent for protection, who calms Theo
OK I don't talk about this segment much but for the first time since the episodes’ release, there was a tie in the votes in the drawing segment (van Gogh’s drawing section) between Morishi and Makki. Usually, they’ll give the best voted piece to a randomly selected winner w/the VA’s signature, but instead of giving out both pictures, they gave out Makki’s art piece (bc he’s van Gogh lol)
(they didn’t do the “Can you tell me…your name?” segment this episode, but this episode is legendary in my mind!!! So funny and entertaining)
Episode 6: No special guests!! Just Sebas and Vincent
youtube
Makki finally lets the viewers choose the official position of Morishi (guest, regular-guest, regular, or dyungyun). He’s officially the dyungyun (でゅんぎゅん) It’s an exclamatory phrase meaning exciting/heart-beating I think… I’ve been watching 6 episodes of the radio but I still don’t know what that phrase means exactly
Welcome to another episode of Sebas slowly losing his sanity! In today’s “I love yu” segment, Sebas makes his appearance by jumping into the baths!!!
Apparently Sebas has an urge to swim when he sees the large baths, and even is a first-class swimmer (スイミング一級) I think it’s a scale on how great he is at swimming, and it would mean he’s pretty good
Vincent has also seen him swim butterfly (idk if it's in the baths or in a pool but imagining Sebas swimming butterfly in the hot baths is amusing)
Vincent likes eating the motsunabe (もつ鍋), a type of hotpot that Sebas made
As an adult, Vincent spends his Christmas season painting, but as a child, he would spend time w/Theo baking cakes, decorating trees, or playing in the snow
One time, Theo cried when a snowball hit him in the face
The two decide to do yaminabe (闇鍋) w/the residents. It is when you darken the room, and anyone can put anything in the hot pot. Vincent’s curious what the others will decide to put in the hot pot.
They created a new segment in the show called “Vanmana Involuntary Awards 2017” (ヴァンなま勝手にアワード) where they review the year 2017 with things related to Ikevamp and the radio. The first award is the most popular phrase which ended up being voted as “dyungyun”. The second is deciding on the best artwork produced in the “van Gogh’s drawing section” with the winning piece being a drawing by Makki titled “A woman being kabedon’d by an Ikemen in a dark room” (yes that’s the title). The third is voting on what the viewers want ikevamp to do in the future (ex. Voice drama CDs, more livestreams, raiding Ikesen, etc.) with the winning choice being to raid Ikesen. And in turn, it is implied that Ikesen would raid Ikevamp. The last is asking the viewers if there has been any change (physically, mentally, emotionally) ever since they started watching the radio, with the most votes on the viewers being more interested in Morishin and Makki.
AND of course, my fav segment “Can you tell me… your name?” Vincent’s chosen line was very nice “Christmas? I don’t need anything. All I want is (y/n) alone.”
BUT Sebas’s chosen line is (drumroll please…) “(y/n), did you write your New Year’s greeting card?” and the first name he called out was “Santa-san, did you write your New Year’s greeting card?” AND I CAN’T STOP LAUGHING
Other names used were reindeer, postbox, and dyungyun (most were legit names tho)
They also did a third phrase where after saying (y/n), Sebas and Vincent will say a line, and I guess the staff felt bad for Sebas or smth bc he has legit lines in all of the available options. It was decided that Vincent would say “(y/n), I love you,” (大好きだよ) and Sebas would say “I love you” (愛していますよ) after Vincent (Both mean the same thing, just worded differently. Vincent's "Daisukidayo" would prob be closer to "I like you" meanwhile Sebas's "Aishitemasuyo" would be "I love you" if I were to be very specific)
I thought people would submit serious names (many did) but there were names like ice, carbonara, butter, napolitan (many varieties of pasta). There was also Rose and the two VAs were like “Earl Rose??? You watch this???"
Episode 7: feat. Comte’s VA Horie Kazuma
youtube
OMG Comte’s VA has such a sexy cool voice I can’t
So I didn’t know this, but you can talk to Vincent on Amazon Alexa?? I don’t have one so idk if it still works but apparently it’s called “Vincent’s time” (フィンセントの時間) and Vincent can tell you the time of day and you can talk to him and stuff??
Video showing Vincent's Time here part 1 part 2 part 3
It’s so funny how similar Horie is to Comte bc Makki and Morishin will be loud and talkative while Horie just watches over the scene like a parent
ANYWAYS for the thermae skit…
It’s rare for the others to meet Comte in the thermae since Comte baths at a later time than the others
The topic of today’s thermae episode is mainly about the construction they have in the baths (prob in another part of it??) Sebas came back running after looking at it, Comte and Sebas told Vincent not to worry about it (WHAT IS HAPPENING OVER THERE??? we'll never know...)
Vincent wants to paint scenes he’s never seen so he’d like to go out to various places
After living for so long, Comte said he’s starting to lose the concept on the importance of New Year’s and New Year’s resolutions (this episode was broadcast on Jan of 2018)
Vincent says that Comte’s like a father, to which he replies, “Haha, I’m not like a father. When you call me something as young as a ‘father,’ it makes me feel embarrassed. I’m probably way older than you two think I am”
Sebas replies, “Oh, of course. None of us know how old Comte actually is”
Comte continues, “It’s rude to ask a vampire their age. Besides, men like to keep their secrets hidden.” To which Sebas is like “As expected of le Comte. That is admirable.”
According to Sebas, Jean has a breast fetish?? Sebas apparently knows nothing else abt Jean other than that single fact
So… the “Can you tell me… your name?” is *chef’s kiss* amazing as usual
Comte’s line was “(y/n), I won’t let you go” and for one of the names, he said “Aramaki, I won’t let you go” & you can tell the staff were laughing.
So Sebas… his chosen line was “(y/n), isn’t this bed a bit hard?”
There was “Comte, isn’t this bed a bit hard?” and Horie replies “No,” in his Comte voice & it’s amazing. There’s also “Aramaki, isn’t this bed a bit hard?” and Makki replies “Yup.”
Other notable names include bed, obachan (Auntie), Morishima (yes the VA’s asking himself) and employee (店員さん)
Also Morishi does voice-percussion at the end of the stream and… I’ll just say it’s interesting :))
(Also the updates will prob be daily since I've watched & have the next couple parts written already. I just have to watch the last couple & write about it, which should be done soon)

the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
ikemen vampire: temptation through the dark theo van gogh / mc | T | [ ao3 link in bio ]
The challenge seemed pretty simple: to try to befriend the university bookshop’s most sour employee, Theo van Gogh. As a literature major with a boatload of book recommendations on her back, it ought to be a simple task indeed. But as she uncovers what lies between Theo’s pages, the more she finds it harder to become closer to him without having to put the feeling directly into words. What can she learn from Theo about what it means to stay—and how can she teach Theo about what it means to let go? | written for ikevamp big bang 2020!
[ masterpost for all chapters ]
CHAPTER 18 OF 22
how intricately love crosses love; love makes knots; love brutally tears them apart. I have been knotted; I have been torn apart.
- Virginia Woolf, the Waves
 --
Her phone receives three calls in the span of an hour.
The first one is from an old friend, who rings to ask her how she’ll feel like being neighbors again. Her friend is planning to apply to the university’s MA program, and that she’ll be dropping by within the next week to submit some requirements for the application. She’s asking if she’s free, and if they could hang out a little before she goes home. She bites the butt-end of the marker in between her teeth as they’re talking, scribbling out onto the date on her calendar tacked to the wall. It’s a great phone call.
The second one is from the school she’s going on exchange to. A lady with a thick (but lovely!) accent tells her that they’ve finished signing the paperwork she needs to submit for her student visa. That the document is in her email, and that they’ve forwarded the hard copy to the Office of Student Relations, saying that she should pick it up at their office by the end of the week. She nods and thanks them as they big goodbye. When the call ends, she flutters with excitement.
It’s that last call that’s a little more troublesome.
“Busy today, aren’t we?” Vincent comments with a small laugh, their little conversation about the finalized date for the exhibit cut short once more as she excuses herself to take the call. She awkwardly grins at him as she heads out of the studio, ducking into the living room.
“Yes?” A beat. “Oh, yes. Yes it’s me.” Silence. The smile that was originally on her face upon recognizing that it’s one of the OSR staff organizing her trip disappears quickly. “Is… that really the only schedule available, sir?” More silence. “Oh, no, that’s not—” a pause. “I see. I’m sorry. Yes, I understand.” She bites her lip, looks across the house through to the kitchen, eyes gluing distractedly onto the unwashed coffee mugs on the sink. “Of course. Yes. Thank you. This is noted. I’m sorry. Yes.”
She puts the phone down. Stares at the “ended call” screen before she looks up again, catching Vincent’s stare from the studio doorway. He smiles at her. She smiles back, but she feels so weak.
She turns back to her phone with a sigh.
--
She has a solution for at least one of the phone calls: the first one. She rings up her friend the next day and proposes a drinking party.
Says she’ll bring her other university friends to introduce to her, and they’ll hang out, then maybe share in the good energy (and the misery) of being in the same university—likely soon, we’re manifesting it!
They agree to crash at a place downtown for the night, everyone pitching in for an Airbnb in the middle of a school week. She invites Dazai, and Isaac, and Arthur; they each invite some other familiar faces, Napoleon, Leonardo, and Sebastian, of course—her friend’s brother.
She doesn’t know if she wants to invite Theo.
Only because it’s been… weird.
She’s sure she wants to invite Vincent, though, and inviting him is tantamount to inviting the other, so she does anyway. But because fate is a cruel tutor, the exact reverse of what she has wanted to happen, happens.
Vincent apologizes profusely, saying he’s in the middle of a rather time-sensitive painting (something about painting while the paint is not entirely dry, and his timer is set to just about tonight) so can she bring Theo instead?
And she knows the drill. Theo does not say no to Vincent.
Theo, of course, could just lie to his brother, a little white lie about coming with her to the little Korean barbecue drinking party they had planned tonight, to introduce her group of friends to her childhood friend, who was in the campus lately because she had applied for an MA in the very same department.
But Theo doesn’t.
He goes with them, just as Vincent had expected him to.
Gets in the small van and listen to Arthur and Dazai sing along to the annoying song on the radio way too loudly, the windows rolled down, she and her friend laughing at the boys making a ruckus, her friend’s quiet, stern-looking older brother focused on driving them out of the campus.
Theo wonders if he should’ve lied, after all.
But he knows that even if he knew that he should’ve, he would have come anyway. Because he knows himself. Knows that he will be lying to everyone else and denying it with his whole chest but in truth, he knows that he is just buying some more time with her. Even if that is time spent sitting at the end of a grill table flipping meat as the rest of the table laughs and makes a cacophony of noises, half-drunk on cheap alcohol. Even if that means just sitting next to her as the long night passes, silent in their fullness, not speaking, not breaking the illusion that everything is alright, that she won’t be leaving him soon, that there’s so much brewing in his chest and he still…
Doesn’t have the courage to tell her a single word of it.
--
Her hands are numb with her nerves, but the night goes… surprisingly well.
She and Theo hang around each other, passing barbecue and utensils, but they do not… have an explosive argument like she feared they would have. She reminds herself that they have nothing to argue about, that nothing had been done wrong. Still, she doesn’t want to make a scene out here. She’d told her friend she was going to introduce her university friends, and a shouting match in an airbnb isn’t exactly what friends do.
Instead, she pretends like nothing is different. Like nothing had changed drastically over the past few days. Teases Arthur and Dazai as they huddle each other and have excessive amounts of PDA that would have been unacceptable if they were actually a couple. (“They get a free pass because they’re fuck buddies?” “Mmhmm, somehow it doesn’t count.” “Who said it doesn’t count?! This is scandalous!” “Arthur did. …Wait a minute.”) Gapes at Sebastian and his very obvious mental hard-on for Napoleon, who is busy discussing with him something about a historical note on food rituals in the 1600s, or something—she really isn’t paying attention. Texts Isaac with a winky face waiting for him to finally get here like he promised he would.
Ignores the one person she wishes she could talk to right now but does not have the courage to.
And just as Theo makes his way out to the porch, maybe to sober up, maybe to get some time to himself, her friend, face already flushed with alcohol, a silly grin plastered on her face, elbows her lightly, “So, which one of these cuties is the one you’re pining for?”
“Give me a minute,” she says, as she gets up on her feet to follow Theo walking away.
--
Somewhere in between pizza and the first two or three rounds of beer, Theo goes out to the terrace for a little bit of silence. He’d expected her three usual suspects to come—Isaac, Dazai, Arthur—but he hadn’t expected a crowd, especially not of people he barely knew. The whiskey that Leonardo guy had handed to him was pretty strong, too. He’s still standing straight, but his mind is already spinning in circles.
On one hand, seeing her act so normal gives him some sort of relief. This is what he wanted for her. He wanted to step back, fold the dog-eared parts of his heart back onto itself so that he doesn’t notice them—the bookmarks of affection he’d left along the edges of their friendship’s pages. And sure, pulling away was a feat on its own, particularly because he knew she was leaving, and that made him want to spend even more valuable time with her, but—
This is better for her. He knows that. He understands that. And he’s willing to give that to her.
Besides, she said so herself. She no longer wants anchors.
But on the other hand, seeing her act so normal, so oblivious when he’s torn himself open to give her peace of mind leaves an undesirable taste in his mouth.
But it’s not like he could tell her.
Theo’s just about downed the rest of the whiskey in his glass when she comes out to the porch, the sight of her face like salt to the wound.
It takes him all his strength to smile.
“Mind some company?” she asks, and he shakes his head, leaning against the barrier carefully. “Too loud inside?”
He laughs. “The whiskey was crazy.”
She nods. “Leonardo has a ridiculous alcohol stash. A wildcard during drinking parties.”
She closes the door behind her and leans against the balcony next to him, taking a deep sigh. She’s close enough to him that Theo can smell the faint citrus of her perfume.
Theo doesn’t know what to say but he knows he wants to talk to her.
“Nice shirt,” he says, eyes trained on the pastel yellow linen of the off-shoulder blouse she’s wearing. “Color suits you.” She smiles—even if it hurts a little—and shrugs to emphasize them when he points it out.
“Thanks,” she says. “Finally the season to wear bright colors, you know.”
In his mind, she is still beige coat and black boots in the middle of fall. But even that feels like an entire lifetime ago. The months have gone by in a haze. Theo begins to feel the weight of regret—of letting it pass by out of his grasp—sink inside his gut.
“Haven’t seen you in a while,” Theo says off-handedly, eyes turned to the ceiling. “Busy?”
“Yeah,” she says, with a half-sigh that’s dragged out of her. She takes a breath and leans her back against the veranda as well, but she looks downward, instead. At the corner of his eye, he catches her pursing her lips as if choosing what to say. “Paperwork.”
“Welcome to bureaucracy,” he jokes, and the two of them laugh.
But just a little.
As if they both knew they were hiding something else underneath the laughter.
“How’ve you been?”
It’s a simple question. One they’ve asked each other a million times before. One that doesn’t have to feel as heavy as it does right now.
“Okay,” she says, but her voice falters. “Could be better.”
Theo hums. She knows that means me too.
“But it’s going great, you know. For both of us.”
That makes him turn.
“With, with the exhibit, right?” she follows up, caught off guard by his gaze. “And with the scholarship, and you’re on your last class, aren’t you? Pre-thesis?”
“Hopefully,” he says.
She smiles at it. “Will be, I promise,” she says.
For a moment, the two of them stand there next to each other in silence. Which should have been normal and comfortable between them, but today…
Today is different.
With another sigh, she decides to just go for it.
“Can I just… get straight to the point?” she asks, as if cautious.
Theo nods, even when his heart is twisting into knots.
“Why have you been ignoring me?”
When she says it, it sounds like her voice is crumpling with the weight of the words.
Theo doesn’t dare look at her. Eyes open but still trained at the ceiling, he says, “I haven’t been ignoring you.”
Her face scrunches up, for the briefest of moments, into a potent kind of anger. An expression that clearly spoke then what the hell have we been doing?! without even a word. Then, it dissolves into something gentler, like defeat. “I’m not mad… just tell me if there’s something wrong?”
A plea for help. Theo hates how transparent he’s become to her, over the few months. Theo wonders if she has something she doesn’t have the courage to tell him either.
“Nothing is wrong,” he insists, closing his eyes as if it makes saying it easier. “It’s just been busy. Like you.”
“Then can I ask why you’ve been upset?”
“I haven’t been upset.”
Theo doesn’t like the feeling. The lie is acid in his mouth. He can avoid questions, he can dodge them, he can make up the most convoluted reasons to divert them—but he does not like lying.
He isn’t lying. He’s not upset.
He’s distraught, and that’s not the same thing.
“Arthur says you’ve been out of character.”
Somehow, the idea that she’s been keeping tabs on him doesn’t make him feel any better. “You know how Arthur is.”
“Arthur doesn’t lie.”
Theo quickly snaps, turning toward her with narrowed eyes. It makes her recoil. It’s an ugly feeling. Theo thinks he deserves it. “Are you saying I do?”
With a deep breath, instead of shouting back, she only shakes her head. “I’m not. You don’t.” She bites her lip as she turns her eyes back to the ground. “…though I kind of wish you were.”
“What?”
She doesn’t answer. Not right away, anyway. Theo looks at her and tries to figure out the expression on her face. It contorts, half-pain and half-pity.
He doesn’t know for who.
“I don’t want to leave like this, Theo,” she says after what feels like forever, her voice as fragile as snowflakes. “It’s like I’ve lost you. I don’t want to lose you. I don’t know where you are. Something happened that made you drifted away. I don’t know what it is. I can’t fix it if I don’t know what it is. I don’t—do you know how important you are to me?” She pauses, out of breath. When they make eye contact, they both look away. “You are important to me. So if something happened, tell me.”
Nothing ‘happened’, he wants to tell her. Something ‘happening’ implies that there was something that changed the way things are. But nothing changed. It’s always been like this from the start. That she was going to go, and he was going to stay.
Nothing happened, it’s just his stubborn heart refusing to shut up or speak up. He doesn’t know which is worse.
Theo doesn’t want to speak because the last time he had spoken they had fought over the one thing that is the most important to her. He doesn’t want to speak because he doesn’t know what it is that he can say.
She takes his silence as a denial.
“Does this just not mean as much to you as it does to me?”
“You’re my friend,” is what he says. Not an answer, but a response.
“Then why won’t you tell me?”
From the inside, there’s a sound of glasses clinking. Someone must have initiated another shot for everyone. But the cheerful laughter that rolls out the window does not lessen the weight of their conversation.
Maybe it makes it worse.
“Dazai says you don’t want me to go.”
The lilt of her voice says curiosity, not anger. That relieves Theo only the slightest bit.
He doesn’t look at her. “That’s a lie.”
“Then why did it make you so upset?”
“I told you, I’m not upset.”
“Not-upset enough to avoid me for weeks?”
“I wasn’t avoiding you.”
“Look, Theo, if you just—”
“You want to go away, so go away,” he says, sharply. He doesn’t like where this conversation is going. He doesn’t want to tell her. He doesn’t want to be someone holding her back. Maybe if he tears at the string holding them together hard enough, she’ll be able to sail away.
But what he said only makes her fold even deeper into herself, distress written plain on her face. Like something snapped inside of her. Guilt begins to tear at him, but this is the only way he knows how to do this. It will hurt, but these are only growing pains. “Are you still holding that against me?”
“I’m not holding it against you.”
“Yes, that’s probably exactly why you brought it up,” she says, her voice now louder. “All of that, all those days and weeks together and you’re still clinging on to that conversation at the rooftop, aren’t you? We don’t need to see eye to eye on it, Theo.”
“I agree, we don’t.” Every word she says in that broken voice makes it harder and harder for him to not just tell her the truth, but he knows he can’t. It will cost them both too much. “I’m still allowed to have my thoughts on it.”
“Right, right.” She laughs. A dry sound. “So you would feel bad, then, huh? That I got offered the finishing course? That I’m considering staying there. Forever. Finish my degree there. Maybe work there. Is that it? Are you going to get mad at me for that?”
For what feels like the billionth time tonight, he says: “I’m not mad at you—”
“Do you know how much this hurts?” she interrupts, but this time her voice is small, like it’s hiding in the back of her throat. She could shout at him all night but it’s this tone that makes Theo hurt the most. “I just thought you’d be a little more supporting, you know, you’re my friend, after all, but…”
“I do support you. I won’t be stopping you from leaving,” he says.
“Then why does it hurt?” she blurts, and it’s obvious on the look on her face that she hadn’t meant to. She turns her back to him, crossing her arms in front of her chest. She takes a few shuddering breaths in the silence Theo doesn’t dare get in the middle of, and continues, “why did it seem like you were disappointed?”
Theo stops. Genuinely doesn’t know what to say, just stares at her back in front of him, feeling like she’s already disappearing out of his grasp. That if he reaches out to her right now he won’t be able to reach her—so he does, stretching a hand to see if he can still touch her, the soft cotton of her cardigan—
And he does, and it makes her turn toward him, anger in her eyes.
“I’m not disappointed,” he says. It’s all he can say. It’s the only truth that his mouth can form a shape around. “I’m very proud of you.”
And somehow—somehow that makes it worse. “Then act like it!” she says, tears already stinging the corner of her eyes. “Don’t just push me away and then expect me to be fine with it.”
“I wanted to give you space and let you focus on what you have to do.”
“I didn’t want to focus you out of my life, Theo!” she says. She looks at him like a wounded beast, pain radiating everywhere. “You don’t get to decide what things I add or cut off from my life, you do know that right?”
The thing is, he could admit right now. Could just tell her that he’s been running himself sick wondering if he should tell her. But he doesn’t want to tell her. Why would he, when all she’s ever really wanted was to go away? Why would he when all she’s wanted was to be free of anything that’s holding her down, and he doesn’t want to be that.
He wants her to go.
He does. Or maybe he doesn’t. It doesn’t matter, because he knows what he has to do.
He’s always been the one that stays.
Which is just a prettier way of saying he’s the one that gets left behind.
Her voice takes him back to the present, the sound of it sinking in his brain.
“Did you ever stop to consider what I’d feel about this?”
“I’m sorry.”
“You’re my friend, I wanted you to be by my side and—”
“I’m sorry.”
“—it’s not that I couldn’t have done it on my own, but—”
“I’m sorry.”
“—you don’t know what’s going on in my head all the time and I don’t know what goes on in yours,” she says. “Theo, what if I told you I loved you?”
He falters for just a moment, but then he says: “I’m sorry.”
Silence. She looks at him for a long moment, her eyes glassy. No tears fall.
Maybe if they begin to roll down her cheeks, she might just get him to say it.
The tears might get him to hold her face in his hands, wipe the tears away, tell her he loves her too, tell her he still wants her to go.
But before they can, she turns away from him and goes back into the room, shouting as she enters: “Oookay, I’m too sober! Give me some more of that gin!”, and the door closes behind her with a small click.
Theo stands outside on the porch in the late spring night, with no words left in him.
--
They stay away from each other for the rest of the night.
Theo wakes up just as the sun is about to rise. Napoleon, Leonardo, and Sebastian seem to have taken shelter in the house’s other bedrooms—but he, Arthur, Dazai, Isaac, her friend, and her have camped out in the living room to sleep.
Theo’s eyes scan the room. Professor Newton arrived late last night but joined in just as he’s promised. Her friend had clung all night to Newton like a flirty leech, and the usually-reclusive man had no choice but to stay still and… well, stay flustered; Theo wakes up to him draping his jacket over her friend, as he tries to leave ahead of everyone else to make it to his morning class.
Across the room, Dazai and Arthur are also already awake, watching something intently on Dazai’s phone, giggling and with their hands held together in between them over the blanket. Theo doesn’t know at this point if they are lovers or really just fuck-buddies, but he yearns anyway—to be able to have the courage to connect like that.
And next to Theo, she is asleep, huddled under a blanket with a silly print, a large cartoon penguin sitting on top of an iceberg. The penguin has its arms raised wide, open, laid upon her side like protecting her from danger. From him. And Theo—Theo is about to reach out his hand and brush off the stray lock of her hair that’s now dangled in front of her face, trying his best to not wake her up with his movement.
She makes a small sound, and Theo’s heart stops for a moment, but then she does not wake up.
She’s right there next to him, and she hasn’t left, and it’s still spring, so she isn’t leaving soon, but Theo already feels so lonely. To whom will he recite the interesting lines of poetry that he encounters? To whom will he discuss all sorts of philosophies with, sitting in the alcove, waiting out the rain? Who else will be at the bookstore every week, aggressively haggling for books that already are in set prices, who else will team up with Arthur to make his head hurt? Who else will ring their little bike bell when they pass the bookshop at odd hours of the day?
His hand grazes just the tops of her cheeks as he tucks the stray lock of hair away behind her ear. He imagines the flush of it, should she be awake. But she is not awake, and he gets to be alone in his loneliness. His touch hovers there for just a moment, memorizing her warmth, before he pulls his hand back, and turns away.
Across the room, Arthur is watching, and shaking his head in defeat.

meet Stella, my Blood Donation / IkeVamp Persona! more detailed description under the cut!
she's not that different from my Cradlesona, but i did change some stuff that are half true irl to make her fit well in the ikevamp universe. i mean i wish i can speak and understand several languages so i downloaded duolingo skskskksks
go make your own Blood Donation! Here's my lil reference you can use, I added some more details to fit in the story :) also, a big thanks to @trulipan for the inspiration of using the character screen!
*disclaimer: the character screen belongs to Cybird, the character info and sprite are fan made :)
Basic Info:
Nicknames: Stella, Sol (Leonardo), Peaches (Arthur and Comte)
Birthday: October 21
Age: 25
Height: 156 cm
Nationality: Filipina
Blood Type: A
Physical:
Eyes: bluish purple
Hair: gray platinum with bluish tips, short and wavy
Accessories: golden hoop earrings, sunflower pin (a souvenir she bought before arriving to the musee)
Features: beauty mark above her left lip, a fainter mark on her right cheek
Illnesses: sleep deprived (?)
Social:
Species: Human
Previous Occupation: Graphic Designer
Occupation: Right-Hand Woman (Assistant)
Relationships:
Arthur Conan Doyle, bickering writing buddy. They often get mistaken as siblings and it peeves them both. Stella dislikes his flirty and teasing personality a lot but she’s more than willing to lend a hand if he starts to run out of ideas (which is NOT her body). He loves to tease her and get her on her toes, which resulted to Sebastian lecturing him quite often. Ironically, they’re close friends
The Count of St. Germain, father-figure. They met when she accidentally dropped her sketch notebook. He complimented how she smelled like peaches and started calling her like that (which Arthur caught wind of and started teasing her for it). He spoils Stella rotten with chocolates, satiating her sweet tooth as much as possible to keep the smile on her face.
Leonardo da Vinci, language mentor. He was impressed when she understood what he was saying in Italian. Then tested her with Latin, German and Spanish. Stella was ecstatic to learn more languages causing his sly advances go over her head (much to everyone else’s relief). She organizes his room as best as she can as thanks.
Theodorus Van Gogh, mortal enemy but not really. He would always refer to her as “Arthur’s little sister” and it would often lead them to constantly bicker. However, both of them share the addicting love for pancakes and will eat it at any time of the day, this was one of the few times where they get along very well. Other times usually involve making Vincent happy and safe. Secretly, however, they look out for each other like actual siblings.
Sebastian, meme buddy. They converse in memes, confusing everyone else, when not too busy in work. She would often ask him historical facts about the others and appreciates him going the extra stretch (she likes listening to his history fanboying). He would also save her from Arthur’s teasing and Theo’s yelling, but sometimes he just stands at the corner and listen to them go mad because he finds it amusing.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, radio (I don’t know how to call it HAHAHAHA). Stella would intentionally pass by near his room just to listen to him play the piano, reminiscing the time where she had a violin. It had always been her dream to hear a live, professional recital of one of his pieces, so hearing him composing new ones just beyond a door made her very happy. Mozart knows she’s listening.
William Shakespeare, neutral but very afraid. Stella avoids him as much as possible, his words are very confusing and deep but she tries her best to understand and remain kind.
Napoleon Bonaparte, older brother figure. He knows her unusually strong peachy scent would attract others and he dedicated himself to protect her. She's probably the most casual one to wake him up — Stella earned the free slap card when he tries to kiss her as thanks for endearing his habit.
Jean D'arc, stranger. She hopes to get to know him better. She would always see him with empty eyes and worries for him. She would often secretly pray for his happiness. Jean knows this.
Osamu Dazai, laugh pill. Though she often gets startled when he enters through windows out of nowhere, its followed by laughter she couldn't control. He likes seeing her laugh and it encourages him to never use the door (much to everyone else's dismay).
Isaac Newton, neutral. They don't speak much. Stella would smile his way whenever she sees him but often receives averting eyes in response and a mutter of hello. She would sometimes lightly hop in Arthur's teases about apples.
Vincent Van Gogh, lover. Stella admires his works since forever and to see him alive and well in person brought tears to her eyes when she realized that everything happening around her was real. Their relationship grew gradually, taking soft steps together until they realized they were in love. She would always sit near him when he's painting at the garden and play with his pet raccoon. She melts when he smiles.
Personality: Artistic and bubbly, she finds beauty in everything. Very expressive, but she keeps a facade when she's sad and it is quite difficult to pin out. She's more than willing to help anyone with whatever she can do. She is easily pleased with the simplest things and gets overwhelmed with gifts. She's usually quiet but if you spark a conversation with her it can go on for a long while, she likes to listen to stories and experiences. She loves to learn different languages and cultures. Can be smart then a dumbass the next moment. Underneath the innocent face is a sultry attitude that she's mastered to control and portray to catch people off guard — though she gets flustered easily when complimented.
Before the Visit to the Louvre: A fresh graduate from BA Multimedia Arts, she earned enough money from commissions to travel to famous museums and relax before starting her work on an international news media site.
Likes:
Chocolates
Adobong Baboy (A Filipino dish)
Pancakes
All the pets!!
Flowers!!
Dressing up!!!
Warm colors
Modern day jokes
Performing
Fruits
Dislikes:
Arthur
Skirt chasers
Being belittled
"Arthur's little sister"
Not knowing what is happening
Being stagnant (not doing anything)
Washing the dishes
Skills and Special Abilities:
Can understand several languages because of her constant travelling, speaks Spanish and Filipino very fluently.
Paints
Writes short stories
Can act like a completely different person if needed
Can go for three days without sleep or sleep for three days, no in between.
Inhales food like Kirby, her stomach has a void somewhere and she gets full very rarely.
Plays the violin (when she was a kid, very rusty today)
Paired with:  Vincent Van Gogh
Life in the Mansion: On a daily basis, she helps Sebastian in his duties. Sometimes, she can be found talking business and assessing deals with Theo. She can also be seen in her room rereading Arthur's first manuscripts and editing them. When taking a break, she's sitting by the garden and having tea with le Comte, or watching Vincent paint. She would drop by the library an hour before bed to have a quick foreign language lesson with Leonardo.
Other Info:
She sings when painting very softly, especially when its raining where the pitter patter can drown out her voice.
Cries a lot in her sleep, mostly because of overthinking. She's gotten used to a life where she would be happy for one moment and devastated the next.
She bites. Metaphorically and literally. Arthur got hurt because of it one time.
Bribed easily with sweets — to an extent. She's not that stupid.
Always screams when surprised from behind while quickly whipping around to slap whoever jumped on her. She got a terrible childhood history with those kinds of surprises.
Slaps people by accident when she gets all panicky and will constantly apologize for such a rude habit.
Secretly very horny and has earned a PhD in self control. (Really makes you think that she's actually Arthur's long lost sibling)
She can't smell her peach scent which drives her nuts. A lot of people had told her that since coming in to the mansion. She's never even had peaches before.
The scent grows stronger after sex and bathing, which she found odd because none of the products she uses has peaches as an ingredient. She even uses a different perfume every time but the peach scent still somehow overpowers it.
Vampires are the only ones who can smell the scent, human don't.
Never touch her notebook. Ever. She's insecure about whatever notes and doodles she has. She's hidden it deep in her closet that even she herself forgets.
When questioned why she "doesn't look like a Filipina," she answers with deadpan eyes and a bored look. "We were colonized by the Spaniards for 3 centuries. My grandfather is Spanish." She's tired of being asked often.
Has acted for school plays all her life.
Laughs at everything.
Cries when mad, it adds annoyance to herself.

For the Best
An Ikevamp Leonardo story occurring toward the beginning of Ch. 11 of Leo’s main route. Approx 1000 words. Angsty-ish?
I can’t help but imagine Leonardo and le Comte having a complicated relationship, especially where MC is concerned.
First: That First Night
Previous: Tease SFW/NSFW
Comte did not miss Leonardo’s muttered words on parting.
“Always with the suggestions.” And a heartbeat later, “. . . I’ll do it.”
Those last three little words. Simple, on their face, surfacing from a deep well of pain. Leonardo and his ideals. Held so precious he’d rather keep them than take a moment of happiness. It killed Comte to see his friend like this.
When he’d asked Leonardo to watch out for the girl, he hadn’t expected Leo to feel much of anything besides amusement. It came as a surprise to see them growing close. To watch those bonds settle around Leo’s heart.
Yet, he thought the bonds between Leonardo and his cara mia were light enough to still break with little damage on either side. That would be for the best for them both. Leonardo would continue on his lonely path and the girl . . . he supposed it would be best to send her home after the month, as promised.
It would be such a pity to lose her though. Sebas truly appreciated her help, and more importantly, she brought a spark of joy and life to the sedate residents of his mansion. Even to him. Comte smiled.
***
The garden smelled like fresh turned dirt and blooming flowers. Comte settled onto a stone bench, enjoying the warmth of the afternoon sun. He shrugged off his coat and set it beside him.
“Would you like a cool drink?” The girl - she’d noticed him and immediately asked after his needs. Sebastian was a good teacher.
Comte shook his head. “I am not thirsty. But, I would enjoy your company. Please, sit?” He motioned to the open spot beside his coat.
She blushed prettily, her gaze on the ground as she took her seat. “D-did you need to talk about something with me?” She risked a glance up at him.
“No.” He looked at her, the flush of life in her cheeks, the spark of curiosity in her eyes. “I thought we might spend some time together. After all, it won’t be long until the door opens and I will have lost my chance to know you better.”
This only made her blush more furiously. “I - that is, Monsieur, le Comte, ah - “
“Do I make you nervous?”
She nodded.
“Because I am an ageless, time traveling nobleman who drinks blood to sustain an unnatural lifespan?”
She nodded again, finally looking up at him.
Comte laughed. “I am sorry, cherie. It is not my intention to intimidate you. Truly. Can we think of each other as traveling companions, chance met?”
The girl considered this and then nodded a third time. “I- yes. I think I can do that.”
“Excellent.” He took her hand and kissed it. He could feel the pulse beneath the fragile skin, and taste the slight tang of her sweat. “Now that we are off to a better start, I would like to ask for the privilege of taking you into town.”
Her nose wrinkled. “For work?”
Comte laughed. “I am not Leonardo. No, my dear. I want to show you some of the sights. Things that are gone in your age, but that still grace Paris today. Perhaps you can find a way to include them in your blog?”
“Oh! How did you know about that?”
“Sebas has very fine things to say about you. And I have a certain fondness for writers.”
The girl considered his offer. He found it fascinating that she actually thought about it rather than quickly agreeing. He wondered if this was shyness on her part, or stubbornness. Leonardo had quite a bit of trouble getting her to go along with his plans.
After a brief silence, she told him she would love to.
“Then let’s go.” Comte picked up his coat and laid it over his arm and then took her hand. “Would you like to hear about one of my past acquaintances? He was a Dutch prince with grand ambitions and I - I convinced him I was a real alchemist.”

From the window above, Leonardo still stood, smoking his cigarillo in the late afternoon shadows. He had not expected Comte to wander off with his cara mia. It made him uncomfortable to see her smile up at that old devil. Holding onto his arm, laughing.
Leo tossed his cigarillo to the ground and crushed the tip to ash with the toe of his boot. “Fine,” he told the empty garden.
Isaac was in the library, working on a formula that looked promising. Leonardo interrupted him by taking a noisy seat in one of the comfortable worn leather chairs.
“Have you heard of something called radio waves?” Leo asked the physicist.
“What is it?” Isaac looked up from his work, mildly annoyed.
“Ray-dee-oh.”
The physicist shook his head. “Is this some silliness from Doyle? Or did you pester the word out of poor Sebastian?”
“Neither.” Leonardo frowned. This was supposed to distract him from his sweet compagna, not remind him of her. He stood up, uncomfortable again.
“Hm. The girl then? She doesn’t seem very . . . learned. Though I was quite impressed with her linguistic skill. Tad sorry she wasn’t properly trained. I imagine she would have an ear for Latin.”
Isaac was getting on Leonardo’s nerves. Yes. That was it. This was the entirely wrong distraction. He rushed out of the room without another word, leaving Newt to give a bewildered glare at his retreating back.
Arthur was nowhere to be found, much to Leonardo’s dismay. But Theo was in the dining room, sipping a sweet cordial. Leonardo poured himself a glass of wine and sat. Yes, this was much better.
Theo ignored him at first. Making notes in his ledger and drinking. It was peaceful.
Leonardo noticed the light outside was turning red-gold, the sun setting behind the trees.
“You keep looking out the window like a man that lost his dog,” the art dealer commented.
“I didn’t lose anything.”
Theo smirked. “Just like you were all alone in the thermae before Vince and I popped by?” He shook his head.
“That was a misunderstanding,” Leo sighed. Clearly talking with Theodorus was an even worse distraction than Isaac. He could not escape the worry that his cara mia would enjoy her time with Comte. More. More than she enjoyed him. But . . . wasn’t that for the best?
“You look like you swallowed a cherry pit.” Theo grimaced.
“Something like that.” Leonardo took out a cigarillo and lit it. The smoke made him a little calmer. More able to think. He left the dining room in a little cloud of his own making.
He was still stewing when he heard the first strains of his compagna’s sweet voice. It drifted in from the front of the manse. She and Comte were speaking her language - Japanese. She was still laughing.
“It’s better this way,” he muttered.
