THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA The Patron of Young Girls, Students, Philosophers and Wheel Craftsmen Feast Day: November 25

"Help us, to bring Christ, to all those in the world who are so in need of him."

Catherine was born circa 287 AD in Alexandria, during the reign of Emperor Maximian, and according to the traditional narrative, she was the daughter of Constus, the governor of Alexandria. From a young age she devoted herself to study. A vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus persuaded her to become a Christian, despite she raised a pagan.

Endowed with exceptional intelligence, she soon became well versed in arts and sciences. The beautiful princess and scholar rejected all her suitors, having decided to dedicate her life to Jesus. Catherine experienced the vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary who gave her to Christ in a mystical marriage according to tradition.

Having converted hundreds of people, she ventured to Rome, attempting to convince Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maxentius (or Emperor Maxentius) to refrain from persecuting Christians. Maxentius arranged a debate with the best pagan philosophers and orators, hoping to refute her Christian doctrines, but Catherine won the day. Several of Catherine's adversaries, conquered by her eloquence, declared themselves Christians and were put to death.

Maxentius gave orders to subject the saint to terrible tortures and then throw Catherine in prison. During the confinement she was fed daily by a dove from heaven and Christ also visited her, encouraging her to fight bravely, and promised her the crown of everlasting glory, and angels tended her wounds with salve. More than 200 people came to see her during her imprisonment, that includes Maxentius' wife, Valeria Maximilla; all converted to Christianity and were subsequently martyred. When the dungeon was opened twelve days later, a bright light and fragrant perfume filled it and Catherine came forth even more radiant and beautiful.

Upon the failure of Maxentius to make Catherine yield by way of torture, he tried to win the beautiful and wise princess over by proposing marriage. Catherine refused, declaring that her spouse was Jesus Christ, to whom she had consecrated her virginity.

This makes Maxentius furious, and condemned Catherine to death on a spiked breaking wheel (now known as the Catherine Wheel), but, at her touch, it shattered. He then ordered her to be beheaded.

Before dying, Catherine said this prayer: 'Lord Jesus Christ, my God, I thank Thee for having firmly set my feet on the rock of the Faith and directed my steps on the pathway of salvation. Open now Thy arms wounded on the cross to receive my soul, which I offer in sacrifice to the glory of Thy Name. Forgive the faults I committed in ignorance and wash my soul in the blood I will shed for Thee. Do not leave my body, slaughtered by love for Thee, in the power of those who hate me. Kindly regard this people and give them the knowledge of the truth. Finally, O Lord, in Thy infinite mercy exalt those who will invoke Thee through me so that Thy name be always glorified.'

Catherine herself ordered the execution to commence, and told the soldiers to execute her orders, and then she was beheaded with but one blow by the sword. A milk-like substance rather than blood flowed from her neck. It was the year 305 AD, when Catherine received the crown of martyrdom.

Soon numerous miracles began to take place. Her body, as she had asked, was carried away by angels and buried on Mount Sinai so that she might rest where God had written on stone His law, which she had so faithfully kept written on her heart.

Her major shrine can be found at Saint Catherine's Monastery, located on the Sinai Peninsula.

There is a cathedral named after her, as the cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dumaguete and is considered as the island's oldest stone church having been completed in 1776 and is one of the city's most famous landmarks. It got a major upgrade in 2023 and is rededicated by the diocese's fourth bishop - the Most. Rev. Julito Buhisan Cortes. The church was razed by a fire in 1846, and was rebuilt in 1885. Another fire destroyed the church in 1953, and was restored in 1957.

We went there for our Humanities 2 field trip back in 2010. It was the Compact Digi Cam era (at least for people who couldn't afford a DSLR and I was using a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S930 when I shot this.

Calle Crisologo is a historic street in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, famous for its cobblestone pavement and old Spanish houses. It is part of the Vigan Heritage Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that showcases the blend of Filipino and European architecture. Calle Crisologo can be explored either on foot or through a horse-drawn carriage ride. You can admire the antique furniture, lamps, and decorations of the houses, some of which have been converted into museums, restaurants, shops and hotels.

Right before the pandemic hit the globe, Luzon in the Philippines suffered from a volcano eruption that caused ashfall in several provinces. A bunch of Filipino artists got together to raise funds by selling a zine and illustrated postcards. We each chose a beloved tourist spot in the Philippines. Here's mine: Vigan, Ilocos Sur. It was a memorable time of mask-wearing and community initiatives that, kinda eerily, preceded the pandemic. We worked so hard to release it during Feb 2020 Komiket, on top of our own con preparations. It's one of the reasons that that Komiket will always be memorable to me.

Ilocos Sur: Ang Buhay ng Kasaysayan, Kalikasan, at Kultura

Sa pagitan ng mga lupain ng Ilocos Sur, kung saan ang mga hangin ng Amianan ay humahaplos sa aming mga balat. Naglakbay kami ng aking pamilya sa isang kakaiba at misteryosong destinasyon. Dito sa lugar na ito, hinahanap namin ang kalakasan ng kalikasan at ang kapayapaan ng aming mga kaluluwa.

Bilang isang Pilipino, alam natin na ang Pilipinas ay puno ng mga hiwaga at kagandahan na naghihintay lamang na matuklasan. Mula sa malalim na karagatan hanggang sa makasaysayang mga tanawin, bawat sulok ay may nag-aabang na kuwento at pakikipagsapalaran.

Sa bawat paglalakbay, kami ay patuloy na bumabalik sa mga ugat ng aming pinagmulan, nagbibigay pugay sa yaman ng ating bayan at nagpapahalaga sa bawat sandali ng aming pagiging Pilipino. Ito ang aming misyon: ang tuklasin at ipagmalaki ang kagandahan ng Ilocos Sur at ang kayamanan ng ating kultura bilang mga tunay na Pilipino.

Maikling pagkilala sa lungsod ng Ilocos

Ang Ilocos ay isang lalawigan ng Pilipinas na matatagpuan sa rehiyon ng Luzon. Ito ay nahahati sa dalawang bahagi, ang Ilocos Sur at ang Ilocos Norte. Sa Ilocos Sur, matatagpuan ang tatlumpu't apat na bayan habang sa Ilocos Norte, mayroong dalawampu't tatlong bayan.

Ang rehiyon ng Ilocos ay hindi lamang nagpapakita ng yaman sa kultura at kasaysayan ng bansa, kundi nagbibigay din ng halaga sa mga kabanata ng kasaysayan nito. Ipinapamalas nito ang mayamang alaala ng nakaraang kolonisasyon ng Espanyol sa Pilipinas, na bumubuo ng isang makasaysayang bahagi ng kuwento ng bansa.

Pinakamagandang oras ng taon para bisitahin?

Ang pinakamagandang oras para bisitahin ang Ilocos Sur ay tuwing tag-init, partikular na sa buwan ng Disyembre hanggang Pebrero, kung saan ang panahon ay kadalasang tuyo. Sa mga buwan na ito, mas madaling maglakbay at maglibot sa mga atraksyon ng lalawigan nang hindi naapektuhan ng malakas na ulan o bagyo.

Paano makapunta sa Ilocos Sur?

Sa aming paglalakbay patungong Ilocos Sur mula sa Bataan, nagpasya kaming umalis gamit ang aming pribadong kotse kasama ang buong pamilya. Ang aming biyahe ay umabot sa humigit-kumulang na labing-anim hanggang labindalawang oras, na nagbabago depende sa kalagayan ng trapiko at mga pahingahan sa daan. Sa aming ruta, kami ay unang dumaan sa TPLEX (Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway), at mula roon ay nagpatuloy kami sa pagbiyahe sa McArthur Highway patungong hilagang direksyon hanggang sa aming marating ang aming patutunguhan. 

Pagdating namin sa Ilocos Sur, labis akong namangha sa kagandahan ng mga tanawin at kasaysayan ng lugar. Napahanga ako sa mga makasaysayang simbahan at mga estrukturang nagpapahayag ng mayamang kultura ng rehiyon. Hindi nawala ang pagtitiyak sa sarili na ang aming pagbisita rito ay magiging isang karanasang hindi malilimutan.

Saan maaaring manatili?

Kami ay nagpalipas ng dalawang gabi sa  Hotel Mercante dahil sa abot-kayang presyo nito. Alam kong magiging sulit ang pananatili namin dito dahil sa mga positibong rebyu na nabasa ko online. Pagkarating namin sa hotel, nagulat kami sa kalidad ng mga kuwarto. Malinis at komportable ang bawat isa, at talagang nakapagpahinga kami nang maayos. Sa kabila ng abot-kaya nitong presyo, hindi kami nagkulang sa kaginhawahan at kalidad ng tulugan.

Ang serbisyo sa Hotel Mercante ay hindi rin nagpahuli. Ang mga tauhan ay mababait at handang tumulong sa anumang kailangan namin. Hindi rin namin pinalampas ang pagkakataon na masubukan ang mga pagkaing inihahandog ng kanilang restawran. Masarap at abot-kaya ang mga pagkain, na talagang nagbigay sa amin ng kasiyahan.

Mga destinasyon na maaaring puntahan:

Calle Crisologo

Nang makarating kami sa Vigan, Ilocos Sur, agad kong nadama ang kakaibang tibok ng lungsod na ito. Sa unang tingin ko pa lamang sa mga kahoy na kalsada at mga matatandang bato, tila ba ako'y bumalik sa panahon ng mga Espanyol. Nakatutuwang isipin na narito ako, naglalakbay sa mga makasaysayang kalye na matagal nang tanaw ang kasaysayan ng Pilipinas.

Sa paglalakad sa Calle Crisologo, hindi ko mapigilang humanga sa ganda ng mga bahay na tindig pa rin mula noong ika-19 siglo. Ang bawat bintana, pintuan, at bato ay patunay na yaman ng kasaysayan ng Vigan. Nararamdaman ko ang bigat ng bawat yapak ko sa kalsada, isang patunay na ako'y nakatayo sa lugar na puno ng kasaysayan at kultura.

2. Bangui Wind Farm

Upang mas makilala pa namin ang lungsod ng Ilocos Sur, ang ikalawang destinasyon na aming nilakbay ay patungo sa Bangui Wind Farm na kilala bilang isa sa mga pinakamalaking wind farm sa Pilipinas at isa sa mga pangunahing atraksyon sa Ilocos Norte. 

Nakamamangha na makita ang epekto ng modernong teknolohiya sa kalikasan. Ang paggamit ng hangin bilang mapagkukunan ng enerhiya ay hindi lamang nagbibigay ng solusyon sa suliranin ng enerhiya, ngunit nagtuturo rin sa atin ng kahalagahan ng pagiging maingat sa ating kapaligiran.

Sa bawat hakbang ko sa Bangui Wind Farm, mas lumalim ang aking pag-unawa sa kahalagahan ng pagiging mapanuri at responsableng mamamayan. Ang pagbisita sa lugar na ito ay hindi lamang isang karanasan sa pagtuklas ng kagandahan ng kalikasan, ngunit isang paalala rin sa akin na tayo ay may responsibilidad na pangalagaan at protektahan ang ating kapaligiran para sa mga susunod na henerasyon.

3. Church of Paoay

Sa ikalawang araw namin sa lalawigan ng Ilocos Sur, kami ay dumayo sa isang simbahan na pinalilibutan ng diwa ng nakaraan at pagpapahalaga sa tradisyon. Ang Church of Paoay ay hindi lamang isang simbahan; ito'y isang pamana, isang tanikala ng kasaysayan na nagpapahayag ng pagiging matibay ng pananampalataya at pagmamahal sa kultura ng mga Ilokano at buong Pilipinas.

Ang aking unang paglapit sa simbahan ay nagdulot sa akin ng pakiramdam ng paghanga sa galing ng mga sinaunang manggagawa na nagtayo nito noong ika-18 siglo. Ang mga butil ng bato't tisa na pinagsama-sama upang lumikha ng magarbong estruktura ay nagpapakita ng taglay nitong tibay at kagandahan.

4. Baluarte Zoo

Para naman sa aming huling destinasyon, kami ay tumungo sa Baluarte Zoo na kung saan agad kong naramdaman ang pagkamangha sa likas na ganda ng lugar na ito. Ang malawak na tanawin ng lupa, ang sariwang hangin na dumadaloy sa paligid, at ang mga hayop na naglalaro sa kanilang maluwag na espasyo ay nagbigay sa akin ng pakiramdam ng kapayapaan at kalayaan.

Ang lugar na ito ay isang maliit na zoo na nagtatampok ng iba't ibang uri ng hayop mula sa iba't ibang bansa pati na rin ang mga katutubong hayop ng Pilipinas. Ito ay pagmamay-ari ni Chavit Singson, isang kilalang personalidad sa Vigan. Ang Baluarte Museum ay nagpapakita ng mga hayop na nahuli at pinatay ni Chavit Singson.

Pangkahalatang Karanasan

Nang maglakbay kami sa Ilocos Sur, aking natuklasan ang isang mundong puno ng kahanga-hangang tanawin, makasaysayang mga lugar, at masasarap na pagkain. Ang paglalakbay sa mga bantog na tourist spots tulad ng Vigan, Paoay, at Bangui Wind Farm ay isang karanasang hindi malilimutan. Sa bawat hakbang, tila ba ako'y sumasayaw sa mga alaala ng nakaraan at nalulunod sa ganda ng kasalukuyan.

Ang Ilocos Sur ay hindi lamang nag-aalok ng mga makasaysayang simbahan at mga arkitekturang kolonyal. Dito rin matatagpuan ang mga pasyalan tulad ng Baluarte ni Chavit Singson, kung saan mapapaligiran ka ng iba't ibang uri ng hayop mula sa iba't ibang panig ng mundo.

Ang paglalakbay sa mga lugar na ito ay hindi lamang isang paglibot sa kasaysayan at kultura ng Pilipinas, kundi isang pagtuklas ng sarili. Ang mga tanawin na binibigay ng mga bundok, dagat, at mga taniman ay nagbibigay inspirasyon upang kayo'y hikayating pumunta rito.

Sa bawat lugar na aming pinuntahan, ang damdamin ko'y nababalot ng diwa ng pagtanggap at pagpapahalaga sa kagandahan ng ating bansa.

Ilocos Empandas

Empanadas have their origins in Galicia (Spain) and Portugal. They first appeared in Medieval Iberia during the time of the Moorish invasions. A cookbook published in Catalan in 1520 mentions empanadas filled with seafood among its recipes of Catalan, Italian, French, and Arabian food. It is believed that empanadas and the very similar calzones are both derived from the Arabic meat-filled pies, samosas... The dish was carried to Latin America and the Philippines by Spanish colonists, where they remain very popular to this day. (Majura Primary School , 2024)

...and in the Philippines, the Empanadas from Ilocos Sur are my favorite!
