holy shit that new trailer made me so fucking sad i have to adopt xiao as a sibling figure now. lore rant under cut

its just. the "fighting hard to not become the very thing they swore to destroy" trope always HITS and xiao is such a tragic character through and through that i think itd be hard for anyone to not feel sorry for him, once they have a deeper look into his story. it can be easy to dismiss him as the growling edgelord character but really just a deeper look in and u can see just how...... sad he is

ive said before that i hold a soft spot for adepti lore- after developing lore for xue yin ive come to rly appreciate what the adepti symbolise n common themes that they have, and how it connects to the overarching themes of genshin as a whole.

idk if ive said this before? i forget what i say in my (few) lore rants here LMFAO but i feel that genshin is, to me, a story about grief. about loss. how it happens, how people cope with it, and how they ultimately move on. a more obvious theme in the narrative is ushering in a new era- mond and inazuma having already done this imo by thriving without their archon's guidance, liyue moving on from the loss of rex lapis, and sumeru finally reuniting with their archon. but in order to welcome a new era you have to say goodbye to the old one- you have to lose the old one and move on. such as the archons have to cherish but move on from old friends and old memories, the people have to as well

adepti are sort of deital beings who served the same purpose for thousands of years and now have to learn to adjust to a liyue thats rapidly changed before their very eyes- and they deal with this change. some of them have already started (ganyu, madame ping), and it comes easier for them

but not for xiao.

im very much not qualified or informed enough to make an in-depth analysis on this specifically but ill say that xiao's current story focuses on his recovery from his ptsd. and i dont think im informed enough to talk about ptsd so i wont- but his recovery is so very carefully written in that its so slow. he's not quick to accept these things and can even be harsh about them. not only is his duty ingrained in his brain from years and years of war, but he is physically unable to stop, lest he succumbs to his karmic debt.

(at least. thats how i remember it. cries if im wrong)

i love how we got an update on him during lantern rite actually (i mean, lantern rite is always xiao time but yk), bc ive been dying to know how hes been since we last saw him in the chasm. and it looks like hes been doing the same old things he usually does- but hes making an active decision in getting better, and that makes me proud of him!!!

he interacts with baizhu and qiqi now (though he leaves right away lol, but from their interactions this isnt the first time theyve taken care of him. cute!!) and he even walks around liyue harbour instead of just leaving, even letting a little girl interact with him and letting her grandpa give him some rice wine (from venti noticing that he's already drank, by the time they see each other)

of course, it's hard- hes constantly haunted by his debt. by the demons he's slayed. by the evil he's purged. by himself. he has nightmares about himself- about his fear of one day becoming the very evil he swore to purge. that's why we get those nightmares of the two xiaos- in it, hes the one with the mask on. hes succumbed to the darkness, and he cant take it off- hes become the very thing he swore to destroy.

hes still haunted by his nightmares, his secret fears- but hes getting better now. though its slow, and he may not see it, his development is there and its incredibly meaningful. and i Cannot Wait to see more of him, and his journey in learning that: "It's good to take the mask off once in a while... even just for one night."

hihi hello!!!!!.. i love talking about hikakao so true

im arospec so i honestly don't like outright romance or shippy stuff that much. However i love love love qplatonic/super affectionate platonic relationships, just really close relationships that don't really have a label to them. i think thats why i always get hyperfixated on the close best friends/twin siblings dynamic, a pair who are really close without all the official romance stuff in there, while still having a super close bond that lets them do near romantic things with each other to show their love. best dynamic Tbh

so that's kinda my favorite way of seeing hikakao. like they know some of the things they do are not considered usually acceptable but they don't really think they're in love. they just love each other with the strength of a romantic relationship, and some of the things they do (like kisses and cuddling) they started so young that they find them to be too integral in their relationship to stop, even after they find out it's 'weird'. they just love each other and want to show it. they just want to snuggle god damn it...let them be !!

i think my way of seeing them is like,, a half step down from yours. as in, mine is just slightly more platonic. but i still appreciate hikakao in all its forms,, they are just so silly i love them

ALSO idk about haruhikakao, i haven't really thought about it, but tamahikakao is so cute to me,, especially set in middle school, when the twins first come to the host club and they fall in love with tamaki just because he's so outgoing and kind and trusting, and deep down they admire him for that because they're terrified to be any of those things. and he was that way with Them, the biggest edgelords ever. he is literally so cool for that in their eyes

so they're just infatuated with tamaki, and he kinda falls for them about halfway through the year because he finally got them to come out of their shells and they're super energetic and fun, like him. and he thinks they might like him too. but kyoya tells him they're only in love with him because he's the first person to really make an effort with them, and so to tamaki it would be kinda wrong to make a move with them when they're just in love because they're traumatized. (btw i don't think it would Actually be wrong/abusive at all if they did get together at that time, i just think tamaki would think its wrong) and also kyoya points out that they might take it the wrong way that he's in love with both of them because like. your whole premise was that they could be seen as separate people. and then you tell them that you would date Both of them,, just like those girls,, don't do that you idiot you'll risk driving them off

that was really ramble-y (rambly?) but i think that because of all that, no one makes a move for a long time, and it Could be they never do. but also i think the idea of them all admitting they're all in love with each other way later, like in late highschool, is really cute.

However just early host club tamahikakao where they all just crush on each other and deny their feelings is really sweet too,,. i just think that they wouldn't actually get into a relationship until later. AND their relationship era later on is adorable. polyamory chaos. love that for them.

OH I GET IT ANON DW. I'm not ace but I'm on the aro spectrum and I get what ur feeling. When I was younger I outright AVOIDED romance songs/movie/books bc they pissed me off so much bc I didn't understand what the big deal about romantic love was and it was stupid to me. And to an extent I have a slight aversion still. But for me hikakao (and a lot of other ships, especially queer ones) are very different than straight ships, esp bc with Hikakao there are a Lot of factors (like... the siblings thing, for example. Makes the potential stories more interesting/less cookie cutter). But I get it man and like I said, I prefer this weird grey area with hikakao where it basically is qpp and they're just each other's most important person forever and always

I adore qpp and tbh that's what I see hikaharukao as btw. basically qpps who are ""dating"" but not really they just hang out together. Haruhi is also (grey)aro in my head so she's not really romantically involved with them. They're just a big qpp polycule it's great. Side note this is how I choose to interpret Hikaru and Haruhi in the anime. Hikaru is just suuuuper close to Haruhi as a friend he has a squish on her basically and he gets jealous like "NO THAT'S MY FRIEND" like he did with Arai. I don't think he's in love, I think he just has somebody he really cares about and he has no clue how to deal with that bc Hikaru has never handled his emotions well.

As for tamahikakao YOU GET IT!!! I love love love the idea that the twins had a huge crush on Tamaki in middle school bc he was their first real friend who didn't get sick of them/leave them when they were mean to him. He still stuck around and tried to put in the effort to tell them apart and that got to them. Esp bc their world was still so small so to them this was a HUGE deal. And Tamaki IS pretty and all.... so yeah I think they get a big ol crush on him but they have no clue what this feeling is all they know is that they're trailing after him all the time in the club room like ducklings to their mom. Tamaki at first thinks it's cute & funny and is all like "they just want to learn how to be a host from the best!" and ofc the twins' first reaction is to be edgy about it like "NO WE HATE YOU THAT'S NOT IT" but this doesn't really hurt Tamaki he just thinks it's silly mostly.

But man, if Tamaki developed feelings back, bc he really does care about these 2 and he WANTS to get to know them better so he can tell them apart etc... and then he ends up falling too. And I never considered that part you said but IT'S REALLY GOOD bc yeah confessing to them both would be a bad idea, Kyoya would def say as much. Tamaki doesn't want to hurt their feelings on accident even if he truly likes them both, so he doesn't say anything...

But as they go through the years, he does begin to tell them apart from their little quirks. The way Kaoru talks and acts is different from his brother, Hikaru is more loud and outgoing, Kaoru is more thoughtful and slow; other things he picks up on like how Kaoru will always fidget with a pencil/pen if one is in his hand while Hikaru doesn't, or how Hikaru's smile is just a tiny bit wider than Kaoru's, Kaoru's laugh is more wheezy, Hikaru's yelling is more boisterous, and it seems Hikaru's nails are cut a slight bit shorter than Kaoru's (yes he noticed this, no it's not because he tries to find an excuse to hold their hands at every conceivable moment, whatever could you be talking about)

But the thing is, Tamaki STILL loves them BOTH for their own unique traits. He likes how thoughtful and relaxed Kaoru is, he likes how stubborn and energized Hikaru is, and he doesn't want to choose one over the other. But he's scared, because he doesn't know if he'll mess up and say the wrong thing. he doesn't want to create a rift between the brothers, get into their private world, and he doesn't want them to suddenly hate Tamaki and everyone else. He doesn't know if it's safe, but he almost doesn't care, because he just wants to be with them.

I think for them it'd be one of those things that happen slowly over time. It wouldn't be a sudden deceleration of love, but a slow over-time thing of them spending more and more time together, Tamaki clearly demonstrating he knows the twins individually by personality, literally sharing a hotel room at some point during some big Club vacation and it's then Hikaru (always Hikaru, the hasty, mouth-works-faster-than-brain mf) who asks, "So, are we like, a thing now?" And well... Well, they probably are. And they're cool with that <3

Side note, I have a hanahaki hikakao au which ?? i'll never write (too lazy) but also i have no clue why I thought of it bc like I said I'm not HUGE on purely romantic hikakao + i'm not even a hanahaki enjoyer typically (dont hate it, far from it, just not my go-to) but like... i've been rotating and developing this idea in my head so if you wanna hear about it. lmk. Maybe I'll reply in the form of like. A short story. Just to get it out there.

ALSO I USED TO LIKE SONIC.EXE JKSBNBHJ I mean it used to freak me out as a kid but also I liked it.... it's a shitty story (this reading I LOVED as a kid and i still find it hilarious) but man I have so much nostalgia for it. Altho considering the like, everything in Sonic CD I wonder if sonic.exe was even necessary lol

im judging 1-a's hero costumes and want to share them with you :) just as a general base for this assume im judging everyone for not having the appropiate amount of padding on their costume

aoyama: sir, this isnt a modern fashion show this is crime fighting.

ashido: look, i know her whole schtick is like, 80s (90s??) era, but i am on my knees begging her to at least choose prints that go with each other.

tsuyu: honestly? its good. i think she should maybe add some blues and browns into it if shes going to be fighting in water so she can blend in a bit more, but its very nice already.

iida: sir, sir, why are you wearing the equivalent of a medieval suit of armor. he can run fast, yeah, but that wont do much if they can hear him coming a mile away.

uraraka: another one i really like. the color scheme is cute, you cant tell what her quirk is just by looking at it, and she has a face protector!! you go you funky little hero.

ojiro: i mean, it fits his personality? i look at his character and go ehhh. and then i see his hero costume and go ehhh. very on brand.

kaminari: the jacket is a grabby hazard. maybe he could fix the ends to the rest of his costume so they arent flapping around? other than that its good.

kirishima: look, i love him as much as the next person but god please put on a shirt. take a leaf out of mirio's book and make a suit out of your hair, that way it hardens with you and adds an extra layer of protection. also the skirt thingy is a grabby hazard.

koda: gonna be honest, i had to look it up because i could not remember what it looked like BUT when i saw it it was a little confusing? the mouth. why. he couldve put anthing else on his shirt in relation to his quirk but goes with a set of teeth. get it ig?

sato: its solid. a little boring to look it which must be a pain to market off but its reliable? i mean it compliments him well so. king.

shoji: so theres nothing really wrong with it, but i just dont like it. i mean he doesnt have much to work with to be fair and it feels a little plain. not like i could do any better though.

jiro: her costume looks like street clothes. the jacket, again, should be fixed to the rest of her costume so you cant grab it. her boots might weigh her down? idk maybe theyre made of lightweight material who knows.

sero: another one i dont necessarily have a strong opinion about. it works well with his quirk, he sticks to a few main colors, and his helmet thing looks like a tape dispenser. hes easily marketable and its efficient.

tokoyami: haha edgelord. but its useful. his cloak helps dark shadow if theres too much light and it just fits his aesthetic. another easy market (esp towards teens)

todoroki: why.

hagakure: see above, but more stressed. please, just copy mirio and make a suit out of your hair. we are all begging you.

bakugou: oh boy uh. green and orange are So Ugly together. they just dont work and the black background theyre on only accentuates this. another note: his gauntlets are too big for him to open a door. this man would never be able to do stealth missions unless he lost the gauntlets.

midoriya: i like his, honestly. he adapted it to work well with his quirks and he also reinforced the places and he needex extra support (wrists/hands). stuck to a color scheme.

mineta: i genuinely do not understand what the thing around his waist is for?? what is it. also cape: garbby hazard. id tone down the yellow a bit, just so it doesnt scream out his position because its eye catching.

yaoyorozu: you are a child. i cant believe i am reiterating this point so much but make a suit out of your hair. your hair is a surface on your body ergo, you should be able to produce your creations through it without exposing yourself.

+aizawa: i mean, it works for an underground hero. he doesnt have to worry about his appearance, just practicality. he has his goggles, his scarf. the only thing bad is the bagginess. some villain is going to grab the extra fabric and yeet him into a brick wall.

I’ll be honest. Whenever costumes are involved I always get a little scared. But you anon? You’ve managed to be OSHA and the fashion police all at once. I literally can’t add anything to this you are objectively correct

And THANK YOU for bringing up the ‘make costumes out of your hair’. Sure it might not work 100% of the time. But at LEAST Hagakure could! I would like to see it for all the ones you’ve mentioned tho, it’s incredibly practical and also way more protective for these children

Hey!! The X-men are literally my favorite thing and I was wondering if you could elaborate on how Scott is a knight of doom

YES OF COURSE!!!! i'll put it under a cut since i tend to ramble a bit & i'm pulling a bunch of explanations from people smarter than i am

the knight weaponizes their aspect; they have an inherent understanding of their aspect that allows them to exploit it completely. doom is the aspect of systems, restrictions/limitations, sacrifices, and endings.

one of scott's core themes is reclaiming his restrictions in order to serve others/the greater good! he takes the possible liability that are his faulty powers and shifts them to become an advantage, largely through the strength of his restraint and discipline. his role as a tactician and the way he sees sacrifices (more on that later) also mesh EXTREMELY well with the knight of doom.

i feel like the Wh*don run (specifically astonishing x-men #22-23) really highlights how scott can turn a situation on its head through exploiting his disadvantages to the point where they become tactically advantageous!! like, let's count the ways:

the ship the x-men stole from kruun is obviously bugged, so his team won't be able to communicate without being overheard. he realizes this, and uses that restriction (being overheard) as an advantage, by falsifying their course of action.

he has been left "without his powers"—he presents a restriction that lowers the guard of his adversary and grants him entry to their home base. he then subverts this by exploding the shit out of everything when an opportune moment arrives

HE LITERALLY EXPLOITS DEATH...... HE EXPLOITS HIS OWN DEATH...................FOR THE GREATER GOOD..........DUDE???? someone get this man an advil

some more thoughts, followed by some examples by people smarter than me:

he exhibits a similar pattern of idolization/realization with xavier irt karkat/HICand dave/bro.... not sure if this by itself is a knight-y thing but i think the consistent disillusionment with their role in defending their aspect is interesting (aka knight burnout, more on that later)

he is def willing to sacrifice shit for the greater good of mutantkind. the shit in question sometimes being his closest friends and allies. the examples that stick out to me are how he allowed beast to get tortured (utopia era) while executing his plan to solve All His Problems At Once & also when he sent x-force to the future to defend hope knowing it was going to be a one-way trip

that entire issue revolving around just how GOOD scott is at self-repression😭😭😭 i'm pretty sure it's post-schism utopia era i don't remember the exact issue WAIT NVM i'm pretty sure it's uncanny #518

seeing phoenix!scott as an inversion to (rogue of) life is also an interesting concept (unchecked growth!)

the amount of responsibility he feels he has to take on (partially due to his idolization cycle w xavier/xavier's dream) is also both knight-y and doom-y

and of course the instinct to protect the people around him --> being expanded into the whole of mutantkind (which, in turn, expands his sense of obligation)

everything leading up to revolutionary cyclops is also very interesting through this framework because its reminiscent of the knights & doom players in hs! the "taking on an insane burden" (phoenix force, whatever whammied mituna) -> the "resignation to the fate handed to him by his aspect" (his stint in prison, dead daves, sollux in general) -> the "refusal to accept that fate" (prison break, dave not wanting to use time travel, sollux fucking off into the dreambubbles, karkat coming to terms w his relationship w leadership) --> experiencing knight burnout at the end of revolutionary era going into death of x

im not sure exactly how to put it into words but everything about his childhood/teenhood... like being surrounded by forces seeking to control him and use him for their own ends..... idk

Then there are the ones who may accept [the fact of inevitable human suffering], and so choose to live in high alert of any danger - any threats - as well as living in fear of what harm may befall them and/or their loved ones. It is this third and final group of people that so deeply marks that of the Knight of Doom.

Now, this might cause a few eyebrows to become quirked. After all, a Knight? Being fearful of something - nevertheless that thing being related to their Aspect? Knights do often present themselves as ruthless and fearless warriors, yes, but that is only because their Aspects and the world around them raised and called them to act as such.

... A key factor in the Knight’s life, specifically before their journey truly begins, is that they are already well equipped with their Aspect.

... The Knight of Doom is one where their Aspect being all around them is far more bittersweet than anything else.

... What is important to acknowledge is that the facade the Knight of Doom puts up is not only to hide the fear they have for their Aspect, but it is most definitely there to hide the grief and pain they have not yet completely finished going through. Whether it’s been weeks or years, the Knight of Doom is someone who would rather hide themself away from these feelings than find a way to truly mend and heal them ... they have built a false wall between them and their suffering strong and thick enough to partially block it from their memory.

... Knights are known to become extremely stubborn whenever people try to order them around and pressure them into doing something, and the Knight of Doom is no different - especially if they believe what they are doing is for the greater good.

But, it is also the idea that you can pull backwards and cautiously and wisely withdraw into your own self. Knight of Doom: One who Exploits with Doom or Exploits Doom

Knights hide a fear of a perceived fundamental failure with their Aspect behind a shield of confidence and obsessive effort. Their challenge is to learn to take it down a notch and to understand that they are skilled enough

A Knight is very skilled with using the rules and limitations of any game or session to their advantage. They skillfully fulfill any responsibility or obligation required of them with ease. They might use their natural caution and pessimism to make realistic choices and endeavors. They use and exploit any rule or limit that they can to their advantage. They might also be very good at exploiting any sacrifices made or any obligation or responsibility that they are held to. They might be very good at avoiding any unnecessary thing or person and are very good at recognizing when something is too futile to even bother with.

Likewise they might only focus on the necessary things in their game or session so they are likely to not do much unless it’s absolutely necessary. They would very likely be very meticulous with themselves about following the rules properly and constantly restrict themselves, maybe thinking they aren’t following the rules properly enough or not following the right ones. They might sacrifice anything they consider unnecessary about themselves or the way they live, sometimes even going too far with it, in order to be considered or thought of as less useless. They’re always trying harder and holding themselves to extreme self-imposed standards.

They would likely wait for the opportune moment to strike, though they are slow to move or act, they always will when something necessary needs to happen. Out of all the Doom players, a Knight of Doom seems like the one most likely to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. A Knight of Doom can also expertly use and exploit fire, bombs and explosions to their advantage, maybe they create flashy distractions during fights. They might even use decaying or dying things to their advantage.

Role in the Session: Rather like the Prince of Doom, this role’s title kinda has “edgelord” written all over it, but that’s not a set-in-stone character trait. The first thing that comes to mind re: what the Knight Class and the Aspect of Doom have in common is a strong sense of obligation. The Knight of Doom is bound to take their duties and responsibilities Extremely Seriously, perhaps rather too seriously at first ... Knights also tend to be very protective of both their Aspect as a concept, and of themselves and those close to them; while the Knight of Doom isn’t likely to be outwardly aggressive, given Doom’s reserved, slow-burn tendencies, woe betide those who try to deceive or confound the Knight or their allies. One of Doom’s internal contradictions (which I find personally fascinating) is that the aspect is associated both with cynical resignation and with a profound albeit restrained sense of passion and persistence. Doom is what’s left after everything else gets burnt away.

The Knight of Doom will likely be a very skilled combatant, as the Knight is a class strongly associated with Strife / battle, and Doom is one of the more overtly destructive Aspects. I’d put them in the Top 5 Roles to use a cool flamin sword, at least. They’re not going to be eager to fight, per se, but they’re not going to have much trouble scaling the echeladder when it comes to that either. Internally, they’re likely to struggle with a perceived (but largely imagined) inability to fulfill their duties, and they could well stumble once or twice in their quest to be perceived as reliable and stoic, or as someone who their friends can lean on. They’re probably doing more than enough already, but if they’re not careful they might overexert themselves and take on too heavy a burden, and they’re liable to be crushed by their own expectation that they face their challenges alone. This is going to factor into their capital-Q Quest and the environment of their planet, and will be the biggest obstacle in their path to Ascension. A Knight’s duty is to protect their co-players, but their co-players also have to support them.

imo idgaf anymore what the twitch frogs think about the minecrafters, it's always wannabe edgelords who just like to gatekeep and hate women...I used to be annoyed with the amount of shitty chatters in dsmp streams, but they're just kids and they likely don't even know twitch culture so I think it's fair to just let them live and have fun...dteam and the rest of the dsmp completely ushered in a new era on twitch and I can't bring myself to hate them for creating a more inclusive space in the gaming community no matter how many shitty cosplays I see 🤷

you shouldn’t! i get the disdain a lot of twitch streamers and viewers have for the fanbase and their chatters but tbh compared to some genuinely incel-ridden, racist and misogynistic chats and communities, i’d say it’s not that bad

yooo this is me from the future checking my drafts and realizing i never responded to this IM SORRY. my previous point still stands and i also wanted to add that these crafter chatter kids are also just a form of cringe that isn’t “acceptable” to these normal twitch frogs bc the cringy humour isn’t derived from humour they understand i feel (quote unquote girly humour), does that make sense? girls are also just easier to shit on lol. however i do think that as much as you should let them have fun, they need to learn to be respectful because even more than “cringy”, they have awful twitch etiquette and a lot of times make chat unreadable and uncomfortable for both the viewers and streamers. twitch culture is also important and chats a forefront of that. but i agree it’s great that the crafters opened twitch to a bigger and definitely more diverse audience! both chatters and streamers :)

but I used to adore goosebumps and warrior cats and animorphs and books like that! i was the kids library fiend. cartoons like Ben 10 and freakazoid and the pbs shows like wordgirl and wild kratts were big for me... plus I got rly into manga and, never finished them, but used to be a bleach and naruto and one piece kid. still kinda wanna finish some of those... I'm p sure i used to have otaku pins lmao. and!! i got obsessed w webcomics when i was 12, lots of "gamer comics" and furry stuff (I still read a good chunk of the stuff I found back then tbh)

my real "cringey" years were 11-14 when i was a HUGE edgelord (still am a little but im a bit less dire abt it lmao) and wanted to be emo/goth and listened to a lot of linkin park... I also wrote my first fanfic when i was 13! :D a goosebumps crossover fic X3 plus that's when i started getting rly into anime and rewatching stuff from when i was younger and trying new ones... and when i was 14 i got rly into danny phantom!! plus that was also my era of hours of minecraft and undertale...

anyway. I used to adore ya dystopia like that too and inhaled it like i couldnt get enough but never got to divergent... but idealized fictional characters are fun to play with, yknow? esp when you're just a learning kid and are processing and consuming information at such a crazy rate while ur developing... and sometimes you look back and think "oh man i sucked" but again!! kids are constantly learning and that's part of the process, being "cringe" and making mistakes. I hope ppl learn to chill out and let them enjoy things, and not be mean or bullies abt it

Heyo! I've always wondered how you came up with your usernames. They're very unique!

edge-expert and ambrosiadreamer?

“edge-expert” was born out of the 2015-2016 “cringe culture” filthy frank-esque era of social media and youtube. It was partially satirical and basically 13-14 year old me being like “hurhur im such an edgelord haha im gonna go have a rat poison sandwich now tunglr has so many special snowflakes hurhurhur.” Hence why I finally decided to change it recently.

As for my current one, “ambrosiadreamer,” that’s a bit tougher. This one has been around a while and has been a constant one. I think it was partially based of the Percy Jackson series/my general love of greek mythology with ambrosia, or food of the gods, used in those. I think the dreamer part partially came from just me being a big day dreamer? I don’t believe it was inspired by the “Dreamurr” family from Undertale, but memory does often fail me. At one point I wanted to change my name to “Ambrose” lmao. At one point I was given the nickname of “Bambi” from Ambrosia and I still go by that on discord and some other select things. To this day, almost all of my social handles will have some variation of “ambrosia” or “dreamer” in them.

What's a good place to start reading daredevil?

okay so here’s what i did to get into (modern) daredevil. i’m still not super familiar with pre-2000s daredevil like i’ve read a few arcs and thats it so i’m just gonna tell you what i know

daredevil v2 #26-81: yeah this is where i started it’s bendis and alex maleev’s art and i dislike bendis as much as the next person with more than 3 brain cells but unfortunately sometimes he really, REALLY can write well. and this is one of those. you can start at the beginning of v1 if you want but you dont have to. there will be some confusing things at first but just google it or ask someone

daredevil v2 #82-87: after bendis left ed brubaker took over and then civil war happened but right at the beginning of brubakers run is this really really good arc. this is def optional cause theres some civil war stuff but i think its worth it

a LOT of really edgelord stuff happened between v2 #87 and v3 (civil war then a bunch of brubaker issues and then the shadowland event which was like where matt becomes a crime guy i guess. its not great but all the ny vigilantes are there), but i think you can skip it. if you want you can look up a more detailed reading order

daredevil v3 #1-38 is the waid/samnee run and if you don’t want to read bendis dd just start here. this is in my top 5 comics of all time id recommend it to basically anyone actually im just gonna uh

if you’re a comic fan of any kind stop scrolling. read daredevil 2011 by mark waid. okay thats it you can keep going

daredevil v4 #1-18 follows directly from v4 and it’s still waid and samnee so its still good but its not like. like i love v4 but its not on the level of iconic of v3 for me. skippable if youre trying to get caught up

daredevil v5 #1-28, #595-612 (renumbered to v1 numbering): this is the charles soule run that just ended and really the only reason to read it is sam chung aka blindspot and also the arc where matt becomes mayor is funny as hell im really really not a fan of soule’s writing. if you’re just trying to get caught up i’d say skip this :/ BUT DONT SKIP #606-612 “THE DEATH OF DAREDEVIL” because it leads directly into the next run

man without fear (2019) #1-5: this literally just ended and i read it like 2 days ago and i honestly went ape shit it is so so so good. definitely a top fav miniseries (not just for dd but in general)

daredevil v6 (2019) #1-ongoing: man only the first issue is out rn but im going absolutely insane already... chip zdarsky is finally freeing us from soule hell

if you want classic stuff you’re gonna have to find someone who knows more than me about classic dd the only stuff ive read is

daredevil: man without fear by frank miller like... i guess you should read this at some point (dont start with this PLEASE dont) if you want to really get the full daredevil experience. i hate frank miller more than anything but anyways this is like a retelling of his origin. theres also daredevil: born again which is what you get if you google “where to start reading daredevil” or if you ask a cis man how to get into daredevil. its about when kingpin figured out matts secret identity

if you’re looking to read some classic daredevil that wont fill you with an incalculable rage read ann nocenti’s run on daredevil v1 #238-245, #247-257, #259-291 (i’ve only read like half of this but its good)

theres also daredevil yellow which is about the early days but published in the modern era. its pretty good idk

Is there an FMA equivalent of My Immortal? Any fic that's infamously bad in this fandom?

Warning, I’m not going to be able to talk about this topic without talking about obscure, out-there kinks. If you are a minor, you have been warned. Please turn back now. Side note: a lot of what i’m gonna say is about how personally I feel about the content, not the people and for some of it, im just gonna speak in an unbiased way. for a lot of this stuff I’m remaining unbiased cause a lot of this stuff was products of young teens exploring fandom and anime communities for the first time, not necessarily thinking too much about implications of what they were writing, and this stuff is very very very old. Like possibly older than some of you if there’s a minor that is still hanging around reading what i’m writing right now. (You really should stop) Anyways, my point is, I’m not here to pass judgement character wise on the creators of this stuff cause I don’t know them now and didn’t then.

Hmmmm….Ok so this is a tough one.

1.My taste in fanfiction is usually mostly crossovers and really niche aus. Even for my otps I rarely go looking for fanfiction because I know I won’t often find something that interests me. 2. Because the FMA fandom is INCREDIBLY old fandom-wise and has gone through several huge shifts in fan content and perspectives on certain matters, and in some cases, sections of this fandom’s history are just gone. 3. I have not been in the fandom for most of its life time. I started getting into it in highschool, which was after brotherhood first aired, so my knowledge on stuff happening before I got in, is gonna be limited, which is bad cause honestly, 2003-2010 was when the FMA fandom was at its height, from what I’ve been told.

And the thing about fandoms during that time, particularly anime fandoms, is that they were CRAZY man. That was the age of the weeb and where most of the crazy fandom con stories you hear about from old fandoms come from. And the fanfiction community was not much different. This was the time when we had real crack fiction. Not just out of the ordinary stuff, but stories about two guys getting high on helium, riding on a rainbow and marrying an apple together crack fics. There were all sorts of just out there trends, like the “how to care for your so-and-so” which read like instruction manuals if you received a life sized robot of your favs, which looking back at the content of these instruction manuals, some would seem really fucked up given the fandom perception today vs then (some of them have most likely unintended rape jokes, lots of casual mentions of ships that were hella popular then but are considered extremely problematic now, ect), the Kink Memes which would range from vanilla rarepair stuff to “what has been seen can’t be unseen”, Edgelord and poorly written first time fics that inspired troll fics, lots of very poorly written m!preg, vore, and ABO(if you don’t know what that stuff is just use urban dictionary but don’t look up pictures) stuff with extreme oocness to fill the Seme/Uke yaoi tropes; and a..hm…very interesting trend called “zoofic” that did not involve actual animals in any way. Or furries for that matter….but it was definitely…..ya know what, for those who don’t know what it is I think this gif is a good summary of how I feel:

Anyways my point is, there is a lot of stuff within the fanfic sphere of FMA that was crazy and out-there that was just accepted for what it was during its time, that there really wasn’t any way for things to rise above the rest as so infamous that it would be remember forever. It doesn’t help that a lot of the archive of fma fiction was completely lost due to nsfw bans on fanfiction and strikethrough on livejournal. And even though fma was a big fandom, it wasn’t one of the big three shonens nor was it sailor moon, so crazy stuff from it didn’t get nearly as much exposure. If there was one at one point, its either been forgotten during the dips and then buried by other content during the revivals or lost all together.

My friend remembers a bad one from the fma 2003 era about a girl dating wrath who becomes a homunculus and god like but she can’t remember the title and given the fact it was on livejournal, it’s probably gone.

As for me the one really bad one I remember reading part was one that was supposed to be parental royed,….but for some inexplicable reason ed was pregnant (m!preg pregnant) and everyone but roy thought he was cursed for it and beat the crap out of him…it was. Something. I can’t remember what its called nor did I get very far into it before noping out, but I remember it was on fanfiction.net if you feel the need to go looking for it.
