ONE NAME IS ALL KIAWENTIIO NEEDS

The mononymic Mohawk actress stars in the highly anticipated new adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” one of Netflix’s most expensive series ever. It’s a role she’s been preparing for almost her entire life.

At first, it’s a ripple. Hovering drops rising from a puddle soon cluster into a faster-moving, levitating stream that swirls into an orb of water floating over a young woman. The focused motion of her hands control this aquatic flow. In the lore of the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, the ability to manipulate the elements is known as “bending” and wielding this power is Katara, a fan-favorite of the franchise’s core characters. In this instance, she’s no longer animated, but rather living and breathing in Netflix’s recent adaptation of the cult show, as played by Kiawentiio, the 17-year-old actress and singer-songwriter from the Mohawk Nation at Akwesasne. For young Indigenous audiences, it’s a powerful moment seeing what was always an Indigenous-coded character, dynamic and independent, brought to life by an Indigenous actor. Her interpretation of the heroine is both true to its source material and grounded in an undeniable sense of Indigeneity, notable in the scenes of Katara’s survival of the violence inflicted upon her tribe and their later resistance to its recurrence. Free from the confines of Western film tropes or the expected relegation to secondary and background roles, Kiawentiio’s Katara is unprecedented. She’s both of this world and beyond. A sign of things to come.

There’s a balletic velocity to Kiawentiio when she arrives at her photo shoot, a certain sense of purpose and the pull of a trajectory toward something just off of the horizon. She’s traveling with her mother Barbara, who works in their community’s cultural restoration efforts, and her father Corey, a volunteer firefighter and building inspector for their tribe. They beam with pride as they watch her and recount the recent stops she’s had on the show’s busy press tour. In the dressing room, she smiles while reviewing pieces she requested from Indigenous designers Josh Tafoya and Karen Francis. It’s like witnessing someone coming into alignment, a new possibility realized. She says, “It feels like it’s not real, to be honest. Sometimes it feels like I’m living this fantasy life or living someone else’s life, especially with where I come from.”

The evening prior, Kiawentiio walked the red carpet for Avatar’s Los Angeles premiere in a stunning ensemble, also fashioned by Indigenous designers: an ice-blue duo chrome taffeta skirt by Evan Ducharme, accented by a hand-beaded corset from Tasha Marie, and jewelry by BYCHARI and Dean Davidson. The look, both in color and from the corset’s beaded wave design, is a subtle nod to Katara’s Southern Water Tribe in the show. Kiawentiio grew up watching the original series, which makes this all the more surreal. “For filming, we were in British Columbia for almost a year and stepping out of that was really kind of like a culture shock,” she explains.

It’s not lost on her that this is her moment, one that she’s balanced with both grace and aplomb, but also a time to reflect on all that’s led her to this point. From her beginnings as a guest star a mere five years ago on the Canadian series Anne With an E, to playing the title character in Tracey Deer’s debut feature Beans in 2020, and more recently appearing in Peacock’s Rutherford Falls and Marvel’s What If…?, Kiawentiio’s career has been nothing short of meteoric. In many ways it mirrors the creative boom of Indigenous-led and centered television in the last half-decade. That a young, Indigenous actor is now one of the leads in a $120 million Netflix production—one of its most expensive to date—that also happens to be an adaptation of what is considered to be one of the best animated series of all time, is as much of a cultural tipping point as it is an expectation rewriting itself. And Kiawentiio is at its precipice.

Over the phone, Kiawentiio discussed this moment and what it means to her.

How did you connect with the Indigenous designers you’ve chosen to work with recently?

One of the looks was Josh Tafoya, a fashion designer out of New Mexico. I actually got to meet him, I think it was two years ago now. He also works closely with 4Kinship, which is also a really cool Indigenous vintage brand. For the red carpet, I got to work with two Indigenous designers to custom-make this very beautiful gown. Tasha Marie Designs was the designer that beaded my corset and Evan Ducharme made my skirt, and they both just came together so beautifully. I love how it turned out, truly.

Does anyone in your family do beadwork? Is it something that you grew up around?

Yeah, my mom beads. She doesn’t sell any of her work, which she should. My sister also beads. I grew up beading here and there, but it was never something that I continued. I think out of all my creative outlets, it got the short end.

My mom does some beadwork too, so I know it’s super meticulous. How do you approach style outside of professional spaces, like the red carpet? What are you drawn to?

I feel like my style has been changing a little recently. I like really baggy pants. I haven’t really worn jeans in a while, but I wanted to up my whole closet recently. I’ve been wanting to get more color because I tend to lean on black a lot and earth tones in general. It also depends on what time of year, ’cause sometimes in the summer I like giving off that skateresque vibe.

I like a lot of men’s fashion too. I’ll have long shorts that are past my knees and huge T-shirts on and be like why do I look like a boy? Oh, I’m dressed like this. Doing a lot of this press and having this part of my life really lets me tap into my feminine side.

You grew up in Akwesasne?

Mm-hmm.

When you’re on set and you’re in front of the camera, how do you become this character that you grew up with?

It was honestly really crazy, like that first time we had that transition. Growing up, seeing this character all of the time and idolizing this character almost, and then to have that transformation and look in the mirror and see yourself as that person. It’s like whoa, whoa, whoa. But honestly, Katara and I have a lot of similarities in our personalities. And I feel like it’s kind of a double-edged sword in that it becomes easy to become them. But because there are some similarities, it’s hard to differentiate yourself from the character and keep those things separate.

Were you able to draw on or tie some of your own Mohawk roots? It was great talking to your parents too and hearing about the impact of their own work, your mom’s work in cultural restoration and your dad’s work with your tribe. I’m curious if any of that went into how you shaped this role, especially because Katara is a very Indigenous-coded character.

I think with my Mohawk roots and what my parents have done my whole life, I feel like it has shaped me as a person. With that, I can’t help but take that to every role that I play in the past and in the future, too. So, I feel like my Kanienʼkehá:ka roots will always be there with me in every character that I have the pleasure to portray. I haven’t said this before, but really, I truly do owe everything that I have to my mom and my dad.

What was some of your preparation for this role?

We binged the original show. I think I watched it twice and then went into specific scenes for Katara’s character and her mindset, and then also her bending. Every time we had a fight or we wanted to re-create something from the animated show, we were watching clips of Katara’s bending and that also was really helpful for me.

What’s it like being a young actor now in the age of TikTok and social media?

I think it’s a delicate balance. I feel like in this age, it’s really easy to get caught up in what people are saying, good or bad. Because it’s just so accessible. It’s really important to be able to protect yourself from that. With the show dropping, I will have to find ways to protect myself from the outside and what they are saying, even though I have this sense of wanting to look, wanting to know what the public thinks. That’s how I’ve been this whole time leading up to the show coming out. I want to be and I try to be an open-minded person. So, with what people are saying, I like to look at it just plainly, not trying to hurt my own feelings or anyone’s feelings. I like to have this information and [take] it as a learning type of thing.

With the show dropping and how massive the scale is, there is going to be so many opinions, so many thoughts. So, I feel like it’ll be OK if I just kind of let this one go for a while and revisit when I’m in a more stable place.

I think that’s healthy. On the flip side, for somebody coming up in your generation, specifically somebody Indigenous working in this industry, what’s it like to watch actors like Lily Gladstone or Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs lead the way?

It’s so beautiful. It’s beautiful to see all these amazing strong Indigenous actors. A lot of our stories have been trying to break through for a long time. To now be able to see it in multiple people that come to mind immediately with Reservation Dogs, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Echo, all of these things are so amazing to be able to see in the industry. It’s come so far even from when I was little.

I think one of the main reasons that I was drawn to Avatar: The Last Airbender growing up was being able to have a strong brown role model in Katara. She was one of not many. I think representation, even in that time, was so scarce and rare. So, to be able to carry the torch that’s been passed down for a long time now and be able to light multiple fires and lead the way for the generations coming is so important. I am truly blessed to be alongside all these incredible Indigenous actors leading the way.

Has there been a particular performance by another actor that’s had an effect on you like that? Somebody that you saw growing up, or are even watching right now that’s a model for your career?

The only person that I could think of is Zendaya. I grew up watching her on K.C. Undercover and Shake It Up, when she was just a kid star on Disney. Another thing that is so inspiring to me is her fashion sense. I love how she doesn’t always step out to all these different events. But when she does, everyone knows it and she’s making a statement. It’s just really inspiring to me, her fashion sense and her choices. Also, to have a single name that’s different from what you always hear is also something that we relate to and is inspiring to me.

What is it like having this be something of a new normal for a Native actor where you’re not necessarily just relegated to these roles in westerns? That’s something that people have been dreaming of. It seems like it’s a totally open future now too. What does that feel like?

It feels so surreal. Honestly, sometimes I get the sense of guilt. There are so many people that fight for the same spot. Sometimes, I have to remind myself how hard I’ve worked for things because it sometimes can feel like maybe someone else deserved this. You know that type of feeling?

But I’m lucky enough to have an amazing support group. To be able to be in this position that I’m in now is so incredible. Something that my dad always told me that we’re always where we’re supposed to be. I think that’s something if I had the chance to tell other Indigenous people, or just people in general, especially with actors and acting—you’re always where you’re supposed to be. If you didn’t get this job, it was for this reason. If you feel like you really wanted this thing but it didn’t end up happening, it was because this thing was waiting for you. And I feel like a lot of times, fate works in really funny ways. Of course, I was auditioning for so many things before Avatarhappened. I just can’t imagine if I had landed a different role and then wasn’t able to go out for this. So, it’s so funny how the universe works in crazy ways to make things align perfectly.

Webb telescope detects universe’s most distant organic molecules An international team of astronomers has detected complex organic molecules in the most distant galaxy to date using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. The discovery of the molecules, which are familiar on Earth in smoke, soot and smog, demonstrates the power of Webb to help understand the complex chemistry that goes hand-in-hand with the birth of new stars even in the earliest periods of the universe’s history. At least for galaxies, the new findings cast doubt on the old adage that where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Using the Webb telescope, Texas A&M University astronomer Justin Spilker and collaborators found the organic molecules in a galaxy more than 12 billion light-years away. Because of its extreme distance, the light detected by the astronomers began its journey when the universe was less than 1.5 billion years old — about 10% of its current age. The galaxy was first discovered by the National Science Foundation’s South Pole Telescope in 2013 and has since been studied by many observatories, including the radio telescope ALMA and the Hubble Space Telescope. Spilker notes the discovery, reported this week in the journal Nature, was made possible through the combined powers of Webb and fate, with a little help from a phenomenon called gravitational lensing. Lensing, originally predicted by Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity, happens when two galaxies are almost perfectly aligned from our point of view on Earth. The light from the background galaxy is stretched and magnified by the foreground galaxy into a ring-like shape, known as an Einstein ring. “By combining Webb’s amazing capabilities with a natural ‘cosmic magnifying glass,’ we were able to see even more detail than we otherwise could,” said Spilker, an assistant professor in the Texas A&M Department of Physics and Astronomy and a member of the George P. and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Institute for Fundamental Physics and Astronomy. “That level of magnification is actually what made us interested in looking at this galaxy with Webb in the first place, because it really lets us see all the rich details of what makes up a galaxy in the early universe that we could never do otherwise.” The data from Webb found the telltale signature of large organic molecules akin to smog and smoke —building blocks of the same cancer-causing hydrocarbon emissions on Earth that are key contributors to atmospheric pollution. However, Spilker says the implications of galactic smoke signals are much less disastrous for their cosmic ecosystems. “These big molecules are actually pretty common in space,” Spilker explained. “Astronomers used to think they were a good sign that new stars were forming. Anywhere you saw these molecules, baby stars were also right there blazing away.” The new results from Webb show that this idea might not exactly ring true in the early universe, according to Spilker. “Thanks to the high-definition images from Webb, we found a lot of regions with smoke but no star formation, and others with new stars forming but no smoke,” Spilker added. University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign graduate student Kedar Phadke, who led the technical development of the team’s Webb observations, noted that astronomers are using Webb to make connections across the vastness of space with unprecedented potential. “Discoveries like this are precisely what Webb was built to do: understand the earliest stages of the universe in new and exciting ways,” Phadke said. “It’s amazing that we can identify molecules billions of light-years away that we’re familiar with here on Earth, even if they show up in ways we don’t like, like smog and smoke. It’s also a powerful statement about the amazing capabilities of Webb that we’ve never had before.” The team’s leadership also includes NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center astronomer Jane Rigby, University of Illinois professor Joaquin Vieira and dozens of astronomers around the world. The discovery is Webb’s first detection of complex molecules in the early universe — a milestone moment that Spilker sees as a beginning rather than an end. “These are early days for the Webb Telescope, so astronomers are excited to see all the new things it can do for us,” Spilker said. “Detecting smoke in a galaxy early in the history of the universe? Webb makes this look easy. Now that we’ve shown this is possible for the first time, we’re looking forward to trying to understand whether it’s really true that where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Maybe we’ll even be able to find galaxies that are so young that complex molecules like these haven’t had time to form in the vacuum of space yet, so galaxies are all fire and no smoke. The only way to know for sure is to look at more galaxies, hopefully even further away than this one.” The team’s paper, “Spatial variations in aromatic hydrocarbon emission in a dust-rich galaxy,” can be viewed online along with related figures and acknowledgements. JWST is operated by the Space Telescope Science Institute under the management of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy under NASA contract NAS 5-03127. The South Pole Telescope is supported by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy and the United States Antarctic Program. he stepped off of his ship straight into a brewing revolution, but he knew that they would never be able to overthrow the king without some sense of order. he became the revolution's fearless leader — with the dogged, imposing presence of a ship's captain, he organized the people of sicily from a rough-around-the-edges comeuppance in the streets, into a full-scale uprising.

the king at the time was a textbook tyrant, taxing the already-poor citizens into poverty and hoarding food, water, money, and resources all for himself and his family. the de luca family. they had ruled over sicily for generations upon generations, becoming more and more greedy as the centuries passed, but despite their long-standing monarchy, they didn't even look like they hailed from the same country. the people of sicily were tan-skinned from hours spent working and playing in the sun — the de lucas were sickly pale from spending all day and night in their egriegously ornate palace, the floors, walls, and ceilings made entirely of gold.

it took eight months of planning, but on a hot, august day, when he was sure the royal family would be caught entirely off guard, your father led the people of sicily in storming the palace. he was the one to personally drag the king off of his throne and throw him outside, into the sun. the sunburn that he procured as your father read off the people's miles-long list of grievances was wicked.

the de luca clan was exiled from sicily that same day, and the sicilian people turned to your father to lead them. he'd been the captain of a ship for so long that it was natural for him to become a leader — but he vowed, as the crown was placed atop his head, that he would never be like the previous king. he would lead them generously, beginning with a redistribution of wealth.

it began with the stripping of the palace. all of the gold used to gild the floors, walls, and ceilings was meticulously removed, your father working amongst the people to pry up the tiles. every single person was given enough gold to support them and their families for five lifetimes over. he worked tirelessly to establish a thriving mining industry, having discovered a string of ore and gemstone mines in the sicilian cliffsides. sicily had already been known for its luxury items — precious inks, textiles, fabrics, and the most delicious of food — but your father sent the economy skyrocketing. after years of abject poverty, the average sicilian was living the life of other countries' rich and noble.

and then there was you. your father married a local woman he'd met during the revolution planning — his right-hand woman. they had you just a year after he took the throne. but your father was not a typical king, so you did not live the life of a typical heir. you were raised alongside the children of commoners, but more importantly, you were raised to love the sea.

your father had been a pirate, but he'd relinquished his illicit ways in favor of leading your nation — but that did not mean he had given up his love of the sea. so, he instilled it in you. you learned to fish before you could fully walk. your earliest memory is of your own tiny hands, catching a fish in a small makeshift net, your parents scooping you into their arms with congratulatory cheers and fond laughter.

you were sailing by the time you were ten. you could pilot your own boat on your own by thirteen, manning the sails and stays with the expertise of your ancestors. you had probably clocked more hours at sea than on dry land — sometimes spending up to an entire week out on your sailboat with your siblings, who came not long after you, placing bets for how long you could stay out on the water, depending on your water supply and by fishing and diving for food.

your father was a lively man despite getting on in age. but he could not leave his post at the throne — managing an egalitarian nation such as sicily was not something he could do remotely. so he sent you, his heir, on philanthropy and political missions, sailing all around the mediterranean and europe, even down to africa. you learned how to function in the political gamut this way — you were an atypical prince, never dressed in formal clothes, skin & hair always damp & salty from the sea even as you sat in marbled rooms and negotiated with rulers much more powerful than you. but you learned how to play the game, just as you learned to sail — quickly, doggedly, and with the ancestral knowledge of dozens of ship captains before you.

you followed these responsibilities into adulthood, sailing from nation to nation, island to island. eventually, you found yourself bringing home strays — children from orphanages in the places you'd visit, children who needed to get out of whatever situation they were in. you had been raised to never let another person suffer if you could help it. and if you could help them ... well, why wouldn't you?

you find yourself with three children, now, two of which you adopted in this way, but the youngest — the youngest you had with your beloved. your spouse, who has stood by you for over two decades, now. they were there with you when you'd be at sea for months at a time, sometimes by your side, sometimes waiting ever-patiently for you to come home. they were they with you when your father passed, a life long-lived finally taking its toll.

his funeral was attended by almost the entire nation of sicily. they mourned him almost as deeply as you did — their fearless leader who had hauled them out of sickness, poverty, and despotism into a collective existence of both luxury and equity. he was buried at sea, like he'd wished. you were a mess for months; the man who raised you to be greater than him was now gone. you were still grieving him when you were coronated to take his place at the ship's helm.

you do your best to take after him, and your people seem to find you agreeable enough, if not a bit wily. you've learned the ways in which being an heir is different from being a king. potential is not enough — action is necessary, as is decorum and to some extent, a level of hubris amidst your determination to remain humble. the last ten years of your life have tethered you to the sicilian shore, the responsibilities of a king making it difficult for you to escape to the sea despite how much you long for it. but no matter — you accept your duties with the grace and willingness of a true leader, and you tackle any and all challenges head-on.

the legacy that precedes you — generations of robin hoods before you who took from the tyrannical and gave to the needy, using methods both illicit and just — is the reputation you carry with you to france. people may see you as they saw your forefathers: a conniving, greedy pirate who wants nothing more than to pillage, steal, and sow discord into the lives of the orderly and unassuming. but this is not so. you've found that you rule the same way you sail. navigating the tides with expertise — finding the give-and-take, the push-and-pull, and using it to your advantage; no destination in sight other than braving the next wave.

diego is the king of sicily ! a tl;dr of everything ^ up there is that his father overthrew a tyrannical king, and then had diego a year later. diego spent most of his adolescence & adulthood at sea, doing political work for his father as the heir to the throne. he adopted two kids while at sea from orphanages in the nations he visited, and then had one more with his spouse.

diego comes from a long line of pirates ! his father was an infamous pirate that would pillage & steal from the rich in other nations, but would then distribute that wealth to the poor ( although that part usually gets left out of his story ). diego idolized his father and saw him as a good man despite his reputation ( and the reputation he's now left with ).

diego is an egalitarian ruler, meaning that he cares a lot about his people being treated fairly. he does not like the idea of conquest or war, but will lend military aid to any country that is trying to fight off a more powerful one.

sicily is a seafaring nation. most people spend much of their childhood learning how to fish & sail. sicily is made up of the southernmost tip of what is now italy ( and is itself a large island ), as well as hundreds of islands in the mediterranean such as malta, capri, ischia, etc.

sicily is known mostly for its fishing & mining industries as well as high-quality textiles and fabrics, and also amazing seafood !

diego definitely taught his kids how to fish & sail a boat before they could fully walk, i mean lbr.

he's a family man, and adores his spouse & children more than anything in the world.

he's a very atypical king and doesn't like to do the whole pomp & circumstance thing. he is very good at it, though — he just doesn't love the formality of it all.

overall, he's a pretty friendly guy, and very vivacious if not a little brash. he came to france to make alliances, but is keeping his eye out for countries who might be getting a little too big for their breeches. he's got robin hood, pirate blood in him, and isn't above playing dirty if it means restoring order to waht he deems as chaos.

his kids, siblings & spouse : please god ,,,, bring this man his family. he adores them sm and would do anything for any of them.

other rulers : listen .. this can go a few different ways. if they're a fair ruler and aren't trying to actively wage war against anyone, he's down for an alliance. but something he is absolutely NOT down for is greed. he doesn't make alliances for the purposes of growing wealth — only out of solidarity in times of distress. it's probably not the best way to go about things, and he'll probably need to be convinced eventually that financial agreements are a good thing. he's just very, very righteous in his morals.

This was a guidance group, and this technology was long, LONG before GPS. It has used uploaded star chart software to look at stars viewed through an upward-looking telescopic device. This accurately determined where both it and the airplane were. This device as a package was called ANS. NASA maintainers nicknamed it R2D2 because of a vague resemblance. Here, it is shown on its support cart; it was installed and removed from a cavity in the airplane using a crane and was considerably heavy. Built by Northrop. ( Davenport Kirk James)

The astro-inertial navigation system (ANS) of the SR-71 Blackbird was a remarkable feat of engineering that allowed the aircraft to navigate with unprecedented precision and accuracy, even over long distances and in challenging conditions. The system's ability to track stars through a quartz glass window, even in daylight, was a critical factor in its success. The quarts glass was fused to the hule which was a breakthrough technology.

4. Navigation Guidance: The ANS could provide the pilot with navigation guidance, including the aircraft's current position, heading, and course. This information was crucial for maintaining accurate flight paths and reaching designated targets.

5. Daytime Star Tracking: The ANS's "blue light" source star tracker was a unique feature that allowed the system to track stars even in daylight. This was achieved by using a special filter that selectively passed only blue light, which is scattered less by the atmosphere than other wavelengths.

6 Redundancy: The ANS was designed with redundancy in mind, incorporating multiple gyroscopes and star trackers to ensure continuous operation even if one component failed.

ALMA observation of young star reveals details of dust grains

One of the primary goals of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is to study the formation and evolution of planetary systems. Young stars are often surrounded by a disk of gas and dust, out of which planets can form.

One of the first high resolution images that ALMA captured was of HL Tauri, a young star just 480 light-years away surrounded by a protoplanetary disk. The disk has visible gaps which could be where young protoplanets are forming. Planetary formation is a complex process that we still don't fully understand. During this process, dust grains in the disk are growing in size as they collide and stick to each other, causing them to slowly grow to potentially become objects similar to those within our solar system.

One of the ways to study dust grains in these complex structures is to look at the orientation of the light waves they emit, which is known as polarization. Earlier studies of HL Tauri have mapped this polarization, but a new study from Ian Stephens and colleagues has captured a polarization image of HL Tauri in unprecedented detail.

The resulting image is based on 10x more polarization measurements than of any other disk, and 100x more measurements than most disks. It is by far the deepest polarization image of any disk captured thus far, according to research published Nov. 15 in Nature.

The image was captured at a resolution of 5 AU, which is about the distance from the sun to Jupiter. Previous polarization observations were at a much lower resolution and didn't reveal the subtle patterns of polarization within the disk. For example, the team found the amount of polarized light to be greater on one side of the disk than the other, which is likely due to asymmetries in the distribution in the dust grains or their properties across the disk.

Dust grains aren't often spherical. They can be oblate like a thick pancake, or prolate like a grain of rice. When light is emitted by or scatters off these dust grains, it can become polarized, meaning that the waves of light are oriented in a particular direction rather than just randomly. These new results suggest that grains behave more like prolate grains, and they put strong constraints on the shape and size of dust grains within the disk.

A surprising result of the study is that there is more polarization within the gaps of the disk than the rings, even though there is more dust in the rings. The polarization within the gaps is more azimuthal, which suggests the polarization comes from aligned dust grains within the gaps. The polarization of the rings is more uniform, suggesting the polarization largely comes from scattering.

In general, the polarization comes from a mix of scattering and dust alignment. Based on the data, it is unclear what is causing the dust grains to align, but they are likely not aligned along the magnetic field of the disk, which is the case for most dust outside of protoplanetary disks. Currently, it is thought that the grains are aligned mechanically, perhaps by their own aerodynamics, as they revolve around the central young star.

What will studies of HL Tau reveal next? This new publication makes clear that high resolution is needed for polarization observations to learn the details about the dust grains. As the world's most powerful millimeter/ submillimeter telescope, ALMA will be a fundamental instrument for continuing this research.
