Information Theory & Random Number Generation

Information Theory

Claude Shannon is often regarded to be the “father of information theory” - he envisioned converting everything we know today such as messages, phone conversations, music and television into a series of 1s and 0s (binary). Previous systems had relied upon analogue signals along a wire - engineers relied upon amplifiers to boost signals along the way, however this presented an issue. All they did was make any errors that had occurred in the original transmission even larger - the further the distance, the worse the signal would get. Shannon’s idea to convert these analogue signals into binary led him to develop a series of error-correcting codes which could be applied when receiving or re- transmitting messages.

Random Number Generation

The majority of number generation we rely upon today are known as pseudorandom number generators - they are able to generate a series of numbers that appear random, however the sequence will eventually repeat. (usually limited by the amount of memory used) The linear congruential generator which relies upon a basic recurrence relation is one of the most commonly used. The Mersenne Twister is a slightly more complex one used in Python however still not suitable for cryptography - this requires a class known as CSPRNG (cryptographically secure pseudo-random number generators). In order to be classed as this it must satisfy two properties:

Pass the next-bit test - no O(x^n) algorithm for positive integer n exists which can predict the next bit in a sequence of k bits with a probability of success greater than 50%

Given a state reveal, the numbers prior to the revelation cannot be determined

Honestly, I think these criteria are so strict to the point that it is probably impossible to produce an algorithm which can provably satisfy both criteria forever.

Looking at the area of physical number generation, the majority of this area relies upon the chaos which exists at a subatomic level. If we really begin to think about this a lot more, we’ll realise that the things that we think are random or chaotic are basically the things we don’t fully understand. Taking images of the ‘unpredictable’ emissions from lava lamps is one means of producing a physical number generator.

I think it would still be naive to think eventually we won’t understand these processes and that the chaos or random behaviour we thought we saw doesn’t exist. I think our ability to generate ‘randomness’ boils down to a similar argument to our ability to protect information by means of possible combinations to search (in bruteforce) - we’re just utilising a pattern in nature which is significantly large enough that we won’t be able to feasibly determine it.
