The Ballad of Laura and Lizzie: A Queer Reading of Rosetti's Goblin Market (post 3/5)

How "Come buy, come buy" became a symbol for lesbian love in the Victorian era.

This poem... what can I say about it more than it is VERY vivid, VERY capitalistic, and VERY (or... kind of) problematic. I first learned of it during my first semester at university, in a Victorian literature and culture class. I presented on it. It was kind of scary.

But first, a plot summary of this wacky poem:

The story begins with vivid imagery of goblins (i.e., short, fanged men) selling fruit within a glen, exclaiming "Come buy, come buy" throughout the days and nights. Rosetti gives us an extensive list of many fruits, most of which are exotic to the British homeland. Laura, the tempted one in the story, soon falls into temptation at the climax of the poem. She is enveloped by the goblin's fruit and soon begins to wither. Lizzie then buys the fruit for Laura and they embrace and continue on life as it was before, yet always tainted by the fruit of the goblins.

Now, some queer analysis!

In Queer Victorian Identities, author Johnathan Hay argues the following:

"In their relation toward each other, Laura and Lizzie appear to be extraordinarily intimate for sisters, 'Crouching close together' in 'Among the brookside rushes', and spending copious amounts of time together 'Evening by evening'"

To be abundantly fair, this poem reeks of lesbian love affairs, even if that does come at the cost of incestuous relationships between the sisters. In particular, I argue that the lines below are indicative of a lesbian allegory, even if that term was not in use at the time:

"Eat me, drink me, love me; / Laura, make much of me"

However, this really, really isn't the only place of... unbridled sexualization of this relationship? Consider the following lines:

"She kiss’d and kiss’d her with a hungry mouth. / Her lips began to scorch..."

Now, if you think this can be read in some other way, just let me know. But, as far as I'm concerned, this is absolutely a sapphic/lesbian allegory for a time where queer identity was notoriously masqueraded behind the Gothic. Further, I argue, like Hay argues, that the relationship between the sisters goes far beyond just familial ties, and that the quotes I've detailed are, by and large, significations of a queer aspect of the poem.

As with Jekyll and Hyde, this seems a peculiar way to express queer love, and I genuinely agree with this assumption. They both are weird. That's the purpose of the Gothic genre.

However, if you disagree with either of these readings, feel free to comment, like, share, etc. Next on the agenda will be a queer reading of the relationship between notoriously flamboyant and androgynous Ezra Jennings and the rugged, masculine Franklin Blake from Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone.

There’s no way that a will or a trust drafted 20 years ago (or even 5 years ago) is current with all those changes. So updating and maintenance of the plan are required in order for it to work. The other thing that is constantly changing (or should be) is the growth and education of the attorney and every advisor working with you on your plan. Over time, new planning strategies are developed, new tools are discovered, and there are better ways to accomplish a goal. Of course, you will continue growing as well, and your goals for the plan could change. The right estate planning attorney has systems in place to ensure he or she stays in touch with you, that the rest of the planning team knows of changes, and that there are methods to adjust the plan in light of those changes. As every member of the planning team focuses on the needs of the client, the process will run smoothly, and you will be more comfortable with the advice that is given and the decisions you make. The attorney will also be aware that for a plan to work well, the people who will help in the future need to know what’s going on. If the children will someday serve as trustees and personal representatives, the attorney might be involved in teaching those children what to do. Assure that your wisdom is passed along with your wealth. As you consider those you love, and those material things that you’ll someday leave behind, only a properly designed and implemented estate plan can ensure that your goals for those loved ones are accomplished. (And no, we’re not talking about the erasure of the Maidens and magic. We know that information was deliberately expunged from the annals of history. We’re focusing on the parts of Remnant’s history that deal with ancient cultures, defunct countries, and influential past events.)

The immediate solution that comes to mind is the Creatures of Grimm. As we’re told by numerous sources, the Grimm not only prioritize attacking humans and Faunus, but they discriminately destroy any of their creations. [1]

This leads to the conclusion that Remnant’s past was physically destroyed, and any traces of it were removed by the Grimm. This would include archeological records—artwork, architecture, books, clothing, jewelry, burial sites, tools, ecofacts, and so on.

The issue I have with this explanation is that it’s not consistent. Throughout the show we see ample evidence of immediate-past and distant-past societies. The remains of Mountain Glenn and Oniyuri still stand, despite the high presence of Grimm at the former (and the presumed presence of Grimm at the latter). Brunswick Farms is relatively intact and provisioned with food and fuel, even though the Apathy are quite literally hanging out under the floorboards. The Emerald Forest even has the derelict ruins of an ancient temple that Ozpin incorporated into the Beacon initiation.

If the Grimm are RWBY’s get-out-of-jail-free card, then they’re certainly not being used to their full effect. The examples I provided tell us in no uncertain terms that Remnant does have an accessible history in the form of archeological artifacts. For fuck’s sake, Oobleck is literally an anthropologist. He teaches history classes at Beacon Academy and has a PhD on the subject.

Similarly, if we assume the format of World of Remnant (a classroom lecture given by Qrow) to be applicable in-world, then that means the history of the last few centuries pertaining to the kingdoms is common knowledge. [2] The existence of this information tells us that Remnant has a flourishing history, and yet we see little of it represented in the show.

I chalk up the lack of history to a nasty habit of the writers. You see, CRWBY has this infuriating tendency to treat RWBY like “it’s like our world but…” It’s like our world but with magic; it’s like our world but with Dust; it’s like our world but with bloodthirsty monsters. You get the idea. As I said back in the Worldbuilding: Overview, if you make your fictional world a one-to-one analog of your own, you end up either ignoring, underdeveloping, or erasing the history exclusive to that setting. And RWBY is largely bereft of any historical identity that it could call its own. Here, let me pitch a few examples of what I’m talking about:

If slavery was only outlawed less than eighty years ago, why don’t we see Mistral creating legal loopholes to retain the system, like through indentured servitude or penal labor? An empire built on human rights violations doesn’t lose that disregard overnight. While we see plenty of poverty-stricken neighborhoods in Mistral, [3] and we’re told about its infamous criminal underworld, [4] these aspects of Mistrali culture seem rather disconnected from the recent history of the country, and ultimately have no impact on the main characters or the plot.

The Faunus Rights Revolution was a three-year conflict that (presumably) took place across all four kingdoms, and involved countermanding the reparations made to the Faunus after the Great War. From a chronological perspective, this was extremely recent. I know Rooster Teeth has a track record of poorly handling systemic racism. Usually this manifests in characters doing tokenly racist things, like using slurs or refusing to serve Faunus customers. But here’s the thing: a discrimination-based conflict this recent should have more bearing on current events. We should see examples of things like police profiling, higher incarceration rates, a lack of representation in media, social pressure to conceal Faunus traits or assimilate into human culture, fetishization, inadequate healthcare, forced sterilization, a lack of clothing retailers which stock apparel that accommodates Faunus traits, and so on. To put it bluntly: Faunus are an underprivileged minority, and immediate history should be influencing how that plays out in the show.

To reiterate: the Great War was eighty years ago. Meaning that there are likely still people alive that fought during it. How have their attitudes and beliefs shaped the world in the last few decades? Did they pass on any lingering hostilities or biases to their family members or community? What about in the present-day? Do people from Vale that migrate to Mistral ever deal with bigotry? Do people in Atlas harbor any lingering ideologies from that time? Is authentic pre-war artwork from Mantle considered priceless because most artwork was destroyed during Mantle’s suppression of creative expression? Did immigrants from the other kingdoms help rebuild Atlas’ cultural identity by supplying it with the values that they brought with them? What about shifts in culture? Did kingdoms have to ration resources like sugar or cream? Did this result in cultural paradigms, where nowadays drinking black coffee is more prevalent as a result of adapting to scarcity?

Because Vacuo’s natural resources were heavily depleted by invading countries decades before the Great War, did this have a major bearing on technology? Does modern Vacuo have wind farms or solar arrays to compensate for a lack of Dust? How does this affect their relationship with other kingdoms? Mistral loves to pride itself on its respect for nature. [5] Does this attitude ever anger Vacuites from the perspective of, “Yeah, I can really see how much you ‘respect’ nature. You respected it so much that you invaded our country and destroyed our oases.”

As you can see, history can’t be idly ignored. It has long-lasting impacts on the people who lived through it, and it continues to inform the attitudes, beliefs, and actions of people to come. What we get instead are traditions that only exist within the relevance of the immediate past, like the color-naming trend that emerged in response to artistic censorship. Anything which predates it, though? Remnant might as well have sprung into existence a hundred years ago with how little its history exists beyond that context.

It’s frustrating and disheartening. We know precious little about Remnant because its history either exists separately from the story (and is delivered supplementarily through transmedia worldbuilding), or it wasn’t developed in the first place. This doesn’t even take into consideration how much the writers deliberately withhold for the sake of artificially creating suspense. (A suspense, I might add, that frequently lacks payoff, either because it gets forgotten by the writers, or the characters never bother to seek out knowledge from available sources, like Ozma. Seriously, why do these kids never ask any fucking questions? They did this throughout all of Volume 5—Ruby in particular, who I badly wanted to strangle when she said “I have no more questions” back in V5:E10: “True Colors.”)

RWBY didn’t even bother to give us a calendar era, like the BCE/CE one used today. Hell, if the writers wanted to buck the system, they could’ve gone with something similar to Steven Universe or The Elder Scrolls, where eras are divided by significant historical events.

Sorry. I swear, I’m done dredging up examples. I’ve already made my point. As we talk about the other topics in their respective posts, we’ll be able to analyze these problems in greater detail.

Trust me. We’ve only just scratched the surface.

On the Road

Summary: Ten years after the massacre at the border, Daniel’s life had changed a lot, the death of his father and brother, his escape to Puerto Lobos to start a new life, dragging a past that he could never leave behind. When Daniel decided that he would never see a familiar face again, the past and the present cross in his road.

I hope the information I gave to you will be very useful. I am really sorry I can't help you find them myself, as you well know, the police kept tracking my movements and I can't leave the United States... You don't know how painful it is for me not to be able to go looking for them personally...

Many years have passed since I last saw them, I still remember clearly when I had to heal Sean's wounds and the pain in my soul I felt when I saw him like that, every day I think of them, how they are, what they will be doing, how they will have done in Mexico...

A part of me hoped that they would try to contact me, but it didn't happen, I hope it's because they decided so and not because something happened...

I hope you get lucky on your trip and manage to find them, in the worst case they may not be in Puerto Lobos anymore, if so, the search will be more difficult.

12:00 pm.

A flight was going to take off at 1:00 pm, a young blond was dragging a huge suitcase through Seattle airport to go to the ticket office to check in and leave his luggage, the flight would be long so he had brought his small ammunition in his backpack

A woman with red hair smiled at her behind the counter when she saw the boy approach her.

“Good morning, can you give me your documents, please?”

The blond boy greeted her and handed the girl the documents she was asking for.

“Mr. Christopher Eriksen.” The receptionist read while checking his data on the computer. “Here is your boarding pass, I hope you have a happy trip.”

Chris thanked the woman but before leaving he remembered something.

“Excuse me I have a doubt... The General Ignacio Pesqueira García airport... That is the airport where I will arrive.”

“Right.”

“It's not in Puerto Lobos...”

“It's in Hermosillo.”

“Do you know where I should go to take a bus that leaves me in Puerto Lobos?”

The woman was thoughtful with Chris's question.

“Give me a few minutes” She said before typing on her computer.

“Papá, papá! Estoy loco por llegar a México!” Said the boy next to him. “Extraño comer tacos.”

The man next to him let out a laugh and took his 7-year-old son in his arms and hugged him.

“No te preocupes mijo, cuando lleguemos a México es lo primero que vamos a comer.”

Chris looked longingly at the interaction between the father and his son, it had been 3 months since he last spoke with his father on the phone...

“Take it.” The girl offered him a paper with a name and written address. “I hope it helps, when you arrive in the city of Hermosillo take a taxi to this terminal, then you must buy a ticket from a bus that goes to Puerto Lobos.”

Chris took the sheet in his hands.

It will be a great surprise to see them again after 10 years.

“Thanks a lot.” Chris said with a smile on his lips.

The sun's rays filtered through the window, the sky was dyed orange while a silence flooded the place, Chris could only hear the sound of the plane. The people around him were concentrated watching a movie, reading a book or sleeping.

Chris had a comic in his hands that he had stopped reading an hour ago, he had fallen asleep after Captain Alfred had entered Supervillain's Sam's lair.

He took his backpack and took out some cereal bars, probably they were going to have dinner soon, but Chris was very hungry.

As he checked what else was in his backpack, he found the old drawing he and Daniel had made.

In the drawing you could see careless strokes of a blond boy with a mask, cape and armor, and next to him another dark boy wearing a hooded cape and a mask.

Chris smiled sadly and pulled a sketchbook into his backpack and opened it until he came to a drawing that had the same concept of children's drawing but much more professional.

He sighed as he remembered everything that happened in Beaver Creek, seeing Daniel and Sean fleeing through the forest, his farewell when Daniel last saw him when he climbed into the treehouse.

Chris had hoped to see them again, that things would be fixed and that all the misunderstandings would be resolved, to have the Diaz brothers again as neighbors and to be able to stay together.

But none of that happened.

Daniel and Sean didn’t come back and when Chris asked Mr. Reynolds about them Mrs. Reynold broke into tears.

Since that day Chris didn’t talk about them with Mr. Reynolds.

All he knew is that Daniel and Sean had fled the border after a massacre that no one could explain since the Diaz brothers did not carry any weapons.

The mysterious deaths of that incident had Chris in suspense, but he was sure of something and that Daniel had nothing to do with what had happened.

Daniel, his childhood friend, couldn’t have killed those people.

Chris's theory is that maybe someone there had super powers too.

From that day on many things changed, from the impact of the news, to things after what happened.

His father had decided to leave Chris with his grandparents living in Seattle for a time, while he resolved his own alcoholism issues.

But Charles never came back, and the times Charles talked to him he always replied that he was not yet ready to return.

Chris was patient.

But things never happened as he expected.

When Chris graduated from high school, his father called him to congratulate him and sent him a letter of apology for not attending his graduation with money inside.

Every time Chris asked Charles where he was and when he was going back, he always replied that he was still fixing his affairs and that he needed to do it alone.

Chris stopped asking the same thing 3 years ago.

Every time Chris talked to his father, it was always about how he was doing and how he was doing with his studies at the university, they didn't talk beyond that, and every time Chris asked his father how he was doing, his answers were very short. .

Chris had started his BA in Interdisciplinary Arts 2 years ago at the University of Seattle, his grandparents were very proud of him.

But 1 year ago a great doubt invaded Chris.

It all started when during one morning at the university, Chris was having breakfast in the cafeteria along with other classmates.

On the television they had to watch the news from their seats, journalists made a reminder of the border massacre.

10 years after the border massacre and even the police cannot explain what happened.

The Díaz brothers fled to Mexico, the United States government requested their extradition, but according to the Mexican government the police have not been able to find them.

Please, a minute of silence to the dead at the border.

“You don't think it's strange that they haven't been able to solve how the massacre took place” asked a boy named Nick who was sitting next to Chris.

“One  of the several theories said one of the boys who fled had telekinesis powers” Answered a girl of dark skin.

“Do you really think that?” Another boy scoffed. “Surely the boys had some hidden bomb they threw and that would explain why the cars flew.”

“But according to the investigations, no weapon was found at the scene of the crime.” answered a girl named Tess. “how could it be a bomb if none of that was found?”

At that time the boys began to debate the theories they had found on the Internet.

A week after Chris investigated online and read all the news portals that talked about the massacre, he began investigating all social networks to contact Daniel and Sean.

But none of that worked.

He could only find Sean's Facebook that had not posted anything since 2016.

He had left multiple messages but none of them were answered. So Chris started doing his little private investigation.

That same year, during his summer vacation he decided to visit Beaver Creek. His main reason was to speak personally with Mr. Reynolds and to be able to get information from the whereabouts of Daniel and Sean.

When he arrived he hoped to find his father in his old house, but when he reached the front of the house it was super careless, his old playground was full of a long lawn that had not been trimmed for years, and his old Tree house was very neglected, it looked as if at any moment it could fall.

His house looked like a place that had not been inhabited for a long time.

Similarly, Chris reached the porch and rang the bell, nobody opened the door.

Then he looked out the windows, but they all had low curtains.

A sigh of sadness came from Chris's lips, this house was full of memories, both good and sad. After all, it was the place where he grew up with his mother when she was alive.

After giving up he decided to walk to the house of Mr. Reynolds. The last time Chris saw them they didn't look as old as now, but they were still there, together, supporting each other.

They were very surprised to see Chris on his porch, Mrs. Reynold hugged him and told him that he had grown a lot and that he was very handsome.

Chris told them a little about his life, that he was studying now at the university and that he had rented a small flat apartment to avoid being a burden for his grandparents while with his part-time work he paid his expenses.

After having a small chat with Mr. Reynolds, Chris asked if they had news of the Díaz brothers.

The face of both changed completely, Mrs. Reynold shook her head.

“Is there no way to know anything about them?” asked a hopeful Chris.

Mrs. Reynold sighed.

“My daughter, Karen, she could inform you better of them, she saw them for the last time before crossing the border.” Mr Reynold replied before taking a small paper and writing his daughter's address.

"Look for her, she could inform you better of my grandchildren," he replied sadly.

After the dinner with the Reynolds, Chris decided it was time to return to Seattle and plan his next trip to Arizona.

Before leaving, Mrs. Reynold hugged him tightly.

“Thank you very much for coming Chris, I love you as if you were another grandson.”

His heart stirred, it had been a long time since he had last had contact with Mrs. Reynold, he felt bad for not having visited them before to find out how they were.

He promised himself to visit them again soon.

After returning to Seattle he left days later to Arizona where he would later meet with Karen.

At first Chris thought that Mr. Reynold had been wrong to give the address since he only saw desert when he arrived.

But after advancing in his car with the GPS activated, he found a small town near the Grand Canyon.

Chris was surprised to learn that there was a small town in a place like this, where you could see mobile homes and houses made of wood around.

It was not very difficult to find Karen since she was very well known in the place.

When Chris knocked on the door, a blond lady leaned out the window and was a little confused to see him.

However, she opened the door to the unknown boy and told him to come inside.

He looks exactly the age of Daniel she thought.

Upon entering Chris introduced himself and went straight to the point.

Karen was surprised that someone else was investigating the whereabouts of her children.

"Count on me in anything that can help you find Sean and Daniel," Karen said as she took Chris's hands.

That same night Chris had fallen asleep at Karen's house, they had talked both of their lifes, Chris told her his story, how he had met Daniel and everything that had happened.

After Karen told him about her life, she told him that she had never stopped thinking about them and that like him, she has been investigating the whereabouts of her children without much success.

All she knew was that they had fled to Puerto Lobos and there was no way she could go there.

And that's how Chris was now on a plane that went straight to Mexico, just 3 hours more traveling, and he would arrive in the Mexican city of Hermosillo.

Chris just hoped to find the Diaz brothers safe.

The Artist’s Reality - Philosophies of Art

The Artist’s Reality - Philosophies of Art by Mark Rothko (2004). Is an in-depth study of contemporary art, Rothko has always been an important and respected figure in the art world with his debates and opinions being highly regarded because of his critical response towards contemporary art. I have been reading Rothko’s book on the Philosophies of Art which contains essays and critical reviews written over his life time. This is relevant to my project as I am looking at the inter-disciplinary within art and how artists transition from one discipline to another which requires me to analyse how artists think about art. Rothko’s original manuscripts for the Philosophies of art were said to be written around 1940-1941 however I think that Rothko’s ideas of the modern art world are just as relevant today because although art has changed and become more  versatile since the 1940′s I think that as a society we still have similar views on contemporary art. For example when you talk about art to the public they usually just think that you paint pictures “What is popular conception of an artist? Gather a thousand descriptions, and the resulting composite is the portrait of a moron: He is held to be childish, irresponsible and ignorant or stupid in everyday affairs”. (Page 1). The for-mentioned quote perfectly sums up what society thinks about artists, there is a lack of respect for artists outside the creative community, the public doesn’t have good understanding of how practitioners carefully consider each decision in a critical fashion. As an artist you must think about philosophical issues, debates, develop skills and knowledge to a high level which are important qualities that often go unnoticed when thinking about artists in society. I think with art becoming ever more accessible it is hard to distinguish what is art and what isn’t “The confusion between art and that which merely resembles it is as eternal as the effort to distinguish between the two”. (Page 19). The word artist is such a vague concept “This element is such an ambiguous character of the word art itself, which is legitimately applied to any kind of skill” (page 19). Today it is so easy to develop different skills with the use of modern technology which allows us to present ourselves as anything we like. If we choose to become a rocket scientist but have no prior knowledge of that subject with the use of the internet we can make it happen.This is similar for the artist because it is such a versatile pursuit nobody is ever just an artist “Therefore we have the Art of Love, the Art of War, as well as the Art of Cooking.” (page 19). Rothko’s quote cements the fact that art is such an ambiguous concept because artists operate across many different disciplines ‘the interdisciplinary’. Rothko also Talks about artists of the renaissance and how they also worked in a similar fashion whereby they encompassed so many disciplines into their work that their ideas and branding of themselves became obscured “He dreamed that, like the Greek, he too could be all in one: Priest, scientist, and artist. He did not realise that he was embarking on a course that would inevitably lead him to specialisation and, subsequently, to the separation of functions, wherein the essential relationship between the developments of these functions would become obscured.” (page 30). or to put it even simpler “the painter of Florence was also her scientist” whereby Rothko is discussing the fact that many scientific discoveries have been discovered by artists of the renaissance. Overall Rothko’s Philosophical debates about art have been very useful in helping me to distinguish how the artist / society think about art and what the notion of the word ‘artist’ means and why its obscure ambiguous nature makes it so difficult to define as a singular construct.

Making noise, redefining language, wielding raucous imagery—these things serve an important role in our collective quest to decolonize relationships to our oppressors, our lovers, ourselves. Sometimes, you have to destroy and rebuild from the essentials.

indige•zine caught up with three Indigenous creatives who use their art to disrupt the boxes   that dictate the way Natives love.

Tatiana Benally

Age: 24

What she does: Hailing from the Diné Nation in Shiprock, New Mexico, Tatiana lives in New York City as a working-class student of anti-colonialist practice, resiliency, and movement. When she’s not freelancing as a media artist or barista-ing in Flatbush, she’s helping to organize events like the Indigenous Creatives Festival with Manhattan’s American Indian Community House, making interdisciplinary art and music, curating the meme page Asdzaaproletariat, frequenting a Diné communist reading group, and much more.

How do you define love?

Love is an organic and necessary connection between human beings. Love is also complex, powerful and is certainly not perfect. There are many notions of love, but the most important love is one that is conscious and respectful of the conditions we are living in.

A noteworthy quote by [political theorist and philosopher] Hannah Arendt addresses the power of an anti-colonial love as:

“Love, by reason of its passion, destroys the in-between which relates us to and separates us from others … Love, by its very nature, is unworldly, and it is for this reason rather than its rarity that it is not only apolitical but anti-political, perhaps the most powerful of all anti-political human forces.”

I find this quote so beautiful in recognizing the power of love in building solidarity and its nature to be anti-colonial. The only thing I would argue is that love is absolutely political in our time. Destroying the “in-between” that [Arendt] writes about, things like individualism and social constructs, could be read as bi-products of capitalism and colonialism. Love is anti-colonial strength in our times.  

In which ways do your concepts of love and creativity meet in your life?

For me, this is mostly observed in the healing process of expression. I often turn to creativity as a way to grapple with feelings of ennui or as a tool to explore the roots of my feelings in times of confusion. Other times, I am just plain happy and the art that I make is then a document of a time that I felt full and warm. The healing power of creation is medicine for the maker and hopefully for people who connect with the art. That’s love.

What’s one toxic thing about romance and relationship you’ve had to unlearn?

The idea that it is cute or normal to be owned by someone (i.e. “She’s mine,” “You belong to me,” etc.) Language and behavior with possessive logic are only another vehicle to integrate colonial notions of property and other outward rippling capitalist-centric lifestyles into practice. From the many recognized and unrecognized Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) cases, to everyday practices of consensual intimacy being breached in relationships.

Love should be founded on mutual respect and compromise, and exist without power dynamics. The purpose of love is not to be used to cushion one’s oppression, nor as a tool of coercion into capitalism. We need to do better.

What is your most potent practice of self love as an indigenous woman?

Existing unapologetically. There is so much joy in embracing who I am and what I do without fear. It is wholesome and pure and everyone needs to do so much more of it.

Dio Ganhdih

Age: 31

What they do: Dio is an Akwesane hip-hop artist with brash, bold flows packed with humor and wit. Born and raised on Haudenosaunee Territory in Upstate New York, they’re also an educator and speaker whose work centers their experience as a queer, gender non-conforming Indigenous artist seeking community amongst their intersections. They’ve made music with Anishinaabe electronic artist Ziibiwan, Peguis First Nation producer Exquisite Ghost, mestiza hip-hop artist Chhoti Maa, and many others.  

How do you decolonize your love?

With reflection and accountability of my own toxic behaviors. I take my own internal spiritual temperature and sit with self to process past traumas and explore new paths of healing. The impacts of colonization are thick and dense. Without question, colonization confuses the love that I want and contradicts my intrinsic ability to love. I work to unpack and unfold the whitewashing and heteronormative culture I was surrounded with and inevitably influenced by growing up in a small town and Native community.

As a queer indigenous musician, how do you protect your spirit?

I protect my spirit by trusting my intuition and using my powers for good. I use smoke, sweetgrass, tobacco and prayer. I attend ceremonies and carry with me traditional medicines from my people. I work with teas, herbs and plants which offer external protection and vitality as well.

If you could tell your teenage self one thing about self-love, what would it be?

Teenage me: Believe it or not, you have everything within you to provide yourself with the love, attention, and the validation you are seeking. You will never actually fill that void until you learn how to embrace yourself fully. Dig deeper and push past that binary—you got this! Konarronkwa!

What she does: Gwen Benaway is a trans girl of Anishinaabe and Métis descent. She has published three collections of poetry, Ceremonies for the Dead, Passage, and Holy Wild. Her fourth collection of poetry, Aperture, is forthcoming from Book*hug in Spring 2020. Her writing has been published in many national publications, including CBC Arts, Maclean’s Magazine, and the Globe and Mail. She’s currently editing an anthology of fantasy short stories by trans girl writers and working on a book of creative non-fiction. She lives in Toronto, Ontario and is a Ph.D student at the Women and Gender Studies Institute at the University of Toronto.

How have you used language and poetry to decolonize the institution of love?

I don’t know that language or poetry really can decolonize love. For me, poetry and language are an embodied reflection of a living, not an artifact nor a tool as commonly used by Western mentalities. Language and poetry arises from the love and the living, but can’t liberate us in and of itself. I use poetry and language to explore and narrate my embodiment and intimacies, but decolonization happens through what you do, not what you say. I think people get tripped up on that point, thinking that their language will be their liberation, when it’s their relationally and doing/living that is the revolution.

What is one misconception about desire and relationships you wish you’d known when you were younger?

I wish I had known that it was possible to live inside multiple intimacies and not focus so much on monogamous intimacy as the ultimate relational bond. What I’ve learned is that non-sexual intimacies are very powerful and important, as are polyamorous intimacies. I have several intimacies that I’m present in which are love affairs, but none of them supersede each other. That feels really comforting to me.

I also have several deep intimacies which are non-sexual and fill a lot of spaces for me in terms of kinship and care. I think when I grew up, I just saw abusive monogamous relationships and internalized that as normal. Now, I look at extended networks of kinship, care, and multiple intimacies as my safe normal. I also wish I had embraced my bisexuality sooner but I guess some things take time to grow.

What advice do you have for fellow Indigenous trans people trying to tell their story?

My advice to other trans Indigenous folks is to stand in your language, traditions, and kinships, but also embrace your own sense of selfness.

Transness is complex. It doesn’t have to be one thing. It can look and feel like many different paths or ways of being in the world. I think it’s important to see your ancestors in your transness, but to know that you can innovate around yourself as well.

There is still a lot of transphobia around us, but we are going to find a way through it towards a different future. Never be afraid to be traditional, but never be afraid to not be traditional (or adapt traditions).

Sometimes, I think Indigenous trans people get pressured to take up a certain space in the world. But like all Indigenous peoples, we’re diverse and not all of us need to be activists, writers, healers, leaders, etc. Some of us can just chill and support other folks who want to take on those roles. I want to see more trans NDN voices and bodies in the world doing a bunch of things, from every nation, and in their own ways. That’s my dream for us: a future where we are vibrant, visible, and varied.

Ivan Allen College Professors Discuss 'Game of Thrones'

The Game of Thrones may be nearing an end for viewers of the hit HBO series, but it is sure to live on in the classrooms of Janet Murray and Richard Utz, Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts professors who find the show an ideal platform to help students learn to untangle a complicated world.

Murray, Ivan Allen College Dean’s Professor and director of the Prototyping eNarrative Lab, sees evidence in the series' sprawling plots of the very changes in narrative structure she predicted more than 20 years ago in her seminal book, Hamlet on the Holodeck.

“The confusion we feel in viewing programs like Game of Thrones, and the immersion that draws us to them, are signals to me that these stories are outgrowing the classic television format,” Murray said.

Utz, professor and chair in the School of Literature, Media, and Communications, sees in the show "rich opportunities to examine our current interplay of cultures, politics, and social mores," and plans to use it as part of an upcoming class in the new Global Media and Cultures program.

Merging Media: Breaker of (Narrative) Chains

More than 20 years ago, in her seminal book Hamlet on the Holodeck, Janet Murray, the Ivan Allen College Dean’s Professor, predicted the rise of a new genre of deeply complex narrative driven by the marriage of television and computer.

It would be what she called the “hyperserial.” Plot, backstory, and detail too fine to showcase in an hour-long drama would pass back and forth between television screen and computer screen, high-speed digital transmission of content would enable new ways of accessing stories, and narrative would, as a consequence, grow richer and more complex.

Nowhere has the promise of complex narrative storytelling been so fully realized as HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels. So it is no surprise that Murray and her students in the college’s Digital Media program have used those stories to test her hypothesis.

“The confusion we feel in viewing programs like Game of Thrones, and the immersion that draws us to them, are signals to me that these stories are outgrowing the classic television format,” Murray said.

In recent years, Murray’s students in the Prototyping eNarrative Lab (PeN Lab) have prototyped a companion app meant to help fans keep track of the dozens of characters, backstories, alliances, and antipathies that make up the dizzyingly complex world of Westeros. Working with Murray, they also have built an application to help viewers track the many plots of Game of Thrones, and the fates of its characters.

The companion tablet app provides a moment-by-moment window into a Game of Thrones episode, automatically serving information about onscreen characters and their relationships without user intervention.

The Digital Story Structure Project graphed the fall and rise of characters, showing, for instance, the opposite fates of Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow early in the series, followed by the merger of their fates in season 7.

“I am interested in prototyping the future of narrative,” Murray said. “Computers give us a new vocabulary of representation, and I believe this will lead to ever more complex storytelling. We need more complex storytelling to understand the world and share our understanding of complex systems and multiple chains of causation, multiple points of view, and multiple possible outcomes.”

To a medievalist like Richard Utz, professor and chair in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication, Game of Thrones is engrossing, if unsettling, fantasy, one of the most complex narrative structures ever attempted, and a “highly valuable admission ticket to the study of contemporary media.”

One thing it is not, he said, is “medieval.”

“None of the reasons for Game of Thrones’ popularity — attractive world building, thriller-fiction pacing, complex characters, sexposition, bait-and-switch plot, escapist fantasy, intricate power play, clever play with archetypes, diverse female characters, guilt-free barbarism and violence, Sopranos-like family drams — is intrinsically ‘medieval,’” Utz said.

While the global fascination with Game of Thrones is sometimes seen as a recruitment opportunity by scholars of the Middle Ages, focusing on the books and HBO show from a traditional medievalist’s perspective is too limiting and self-serving.

“It is a global phenomenon. It is the most widely watched television show in the world ever,” he said. “While it is set in a fictional past, it raises a host of issues about our past, present, and future, and provides rich opportunities to examine our current interplay of cultures, politics, and social mores.”

Utz has written about his aversion to the use of novelist Martin’s world as way to lure students into studying the Middle Ages.

“Classes on the Middle Ages rarely need advertising because of the general cultural love affair students have with medievalist topics,” he said. “Game of Thrones needs to be studied as a contemporary media phenomenon that uses a vague ‘medieval feel’ as one of its attractions.”

In fact, he finds it notable that one of the main characters, Sansa Stark, began the series seeking the trappings of the romantic ideal of the Middle Ages — princesses, knights, and all — only to see that fairy tale viciously taken from her at every turn.

“Watch out for Sansa Stark in season 8,” he predicted. “She will play a major role in how the story unfolds, as will some of the other women whose paths have been transformed throughout the series. Like in classical drama, it’s the survivors who, having learned many difficult lessons, are the real heroines of this story.”

But he does see Martin’s stories and especially the HBO adaptation as an excellent place to meet students where they already are — invested in stories that are indelibly shaped by our current experiences, while retaining the enduring fascination with all things premodern.

“The premodern is an eternal mirror. On the one hand, we like to shudder at the otherness of it to reassure ourselves that we have long overcome its negative features,” he said. “On the other hand, we get to go back, fictionally, to a life that seems so much easier and unburdened by the complicated rules of contemporary civilization. Both responses are illusions, but that doesn’t mean we won’t entertain them.”

Utz plans to use the series as a case study in an upcoming class in comparative media cultures, as part of the new Master of Science in Global Media and Cultures program in LMC and the School of Modern Languages. The program is designed to prepare students to pursue professional careers that require advanced training in communication, media, language, and intercultural competency.

Utz believes that the narrative complexity of Game of Thrones is exactly the right realm within which to model the kinds of practices his students need to succeed and find fulfillment in their future jobs.

“The global city of Atlanta is in dire need of a workforce educated to be skilled communicators across cultural and linguistic divides,” he said. “I am planning on an approach that will confront my students with a wickedly complex scenario that allows for a deep understanding of multiple governmental structures, leadership styles, gender and race relations, linguistic and cultural traditions, and human behavior, a scenario just as complex as the ones increasingly common in future work environments.”

Dancing with Dragons

It isn’t a particularly bold supposition that dragons are a formidable weapon. Still, we wondered: exactly how much of an impact would a dragon have on a battlefield? Chandler Thornhill, a graduate student in economics, and Matthew Redington, a graduate student in computer science, offered to devise a few simulations.

Both are currently enrolled in the course Modeling, Simulation, and Military Gaming, an interdisciplinary, project-based class requiring collaboration across a range of backgrounds and skills. Groups of students spend a semester researching and dissecting historical battles, using this deep understanding to adjust variables and outcomes through computational modeling.

Introducing fantastical elements may seem an inconsequential exercise, but to one of its instructors, School of International Affairs Assistant Professor Mariel Borowtiz, introducing pop culture elements allows students to connect with modeling simulations in a different way.

“One of the things I like about bringing dragons into a simulation is that you really have to go through the same research process,” she said. “You have to be rigorous in how you find data and how you make assumptions. Obviously, there’s not a lot of data available on a dragon’s efficiency but you can look at the information sources available as a basis to formulate and justify assumptions. It shows the process can be applied in all sorts of areas.”

So how much of a difference did the dragon have? By their calculations, roughly 70 percent of opposing forces were turned to ash.

Meet Colleen Marciel Rosales, atmospheric and indoor chemist

1) What do you do?

I work with lasers! I study the "Pac-man" of the atmosphere - the hydroxyl (OH) radical, the most important oxidant in the troposphere. I also study other radicals closely related to OH, called the hydroperoxy and peroxy radicals. 

I use laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy to detect these short-lived and very elusive radicals. Not a lot of instruments in the world can detect these radicals-- thus it is very challenging and exciting! With a baseline knowledge of what amounts of these radicals are present, plus some modeling, we wish to understand how OH affects the behavior of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the presence of other significant compounds such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ozone. I am particularly interested in the concentration and behavior of OH in the indoor environment, since we spend ~90% of our time indoors!

While I'm currently doing atmospheric and indoor air chemistry research, I've also maximized the opportunity to enhance my interest in environmental policy, since my university is one of the top schools in the US for environmental policy and management.  

2) Where do you work?

I am currently a Ph.D. student and Research Assistant at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, USA.

3) Tell us about the photos!

[Left:] I work with lasers, and prior to doing my Ph.D. I have never encountered lasers, apart from laser pointers! There is a lot of physics, optics, electronics, and instrumentation involved in my work, which makes it daunting but very enriching!

[Right:] Coming from the sunny and tropical Philippines, moving to the American Midwest is no joke! This particular winter, we've experienced winter temperatures ranging from -18 to -15 deg C. But I love the pristine white snow and seeing it makes me feel like a kid and I just really want to play in it!

4) Tell us about your academic career path so far.

I graduated high school from Morning Dew Montessori in 2007, went to college at the University of the Philippines in Diliman for my Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and graduated in 2011. I continued on to do my Master's degree in Chemistry in UP Diliman until 2016, until I decided to leave for the US to pursue a Ph.D. in Environmental Science (Minor in Environmental Management) at Indiana University. 5) Anything else you’d like to share?

Sometimes, the path to knowing your passion isn't straightforward. Don't be afraid to try new things, but still keep your core values and skills intact. Personally, I have learned through years of exposing myself to different work environments that my goal in life is to bridge the gap between science and policy, serving as the nexus between scientists and policymakers. As an undergraduate, I always thought that a science career would always stay a science career. As I exposed myself to different environments, I have learned that people with interdisciplinary skills are greatly valued everywhere, and that knowing the fundamentals of science will equip us with the valuable tools that will help us understand the world in a more logical way.

The Deep Map

Maps can be useful, interesting, often beautiful. But any map can only ever portray a particular aspect of a place – and because they are always partial, maps are inherently biased and therefore political.

This is an experiment. An attempt to make a ‘deep map’ of Dumfries - an interdisciplinary, multi-layered, multimedia portrait of the town, from a ‘centre’ that is Oxfam Books and Music Dumfries, where I’m based as writer in residence. The eventual product will depend on how much and what kind of response I get from others. I will work on the deep map using as many other perspectives as I can and the more other voices I’m able to include, the richer the map could be – so how the map ends up shaped depends partly on you!

Are you someone who has known Dumfries your whole life? Or someone who moved here recently? Do you, like me, live outside Dumfries, but know it as the main town? Maybe you’ve only ever visited but have some particular important memory associated with it. Or do you have some expert knowledge – perhaps historical, archaeological, botanical, zoological, even mythological? Each will have quite a different perspective of the same particular places. If we could gather many of these, what could we build?

Throughout the project, I’ll be providing prompts – perhaps photos of particular places, or interesting facts about them or poems on particular themes, hoping to get people’s memories and connections to particular places reawakened. I’ll also be running some place writing workshops to help get folks’ writerly juices flowing! And I’ll be attempting a ‘Poetry Map of Dumfries’, similar to the Stanza ‘Poetry Map of Scotland.’

Why Dumfries?

I studied in Dumfries as a mature student, at the University of Glasgow’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies. I graduated in 2017 with an MLitt in Environment, Culture and Communication. On this taught degree, amongst other things, I learned much about how previous writers have written about place, about being in particular place and what that means for being a human and trying to live well. I also began developing a creative practice which attempts to incorporate my skills as a writer, artist and researcher, to portray particular place in a profoundly layered and multiple way - just as our experience of the world is always profoundly layered and multiple.

At the same time, I had begun to work on my own issues with anxiety and poor self-confidence by learning and practicing mindfulness meditation. This mainly consists of learning to notice – to notice what your mind is thinking and what your body is feeling, learning how to try to be really present in the world, rather than always absorbed in thoughts about the past or worries about the future, fears about how others see you. These things never fully go away, but almost like magic, the practice of noticing them (or trying to notice them as often as possible) without judgement takes away massive amounts of how damaging they are and helps you make a start at feeling at home in yourself. I didn’t believe it could happen until it did.

This practice of noticing, or remembering to keep trying to notice, also helped me to see how much our experience of the world is always filtered by what we know, or think we know. Our experience of place can be hugely affected by what we know about it and by what emotions and memories we connect with it.

My family moved to Dumfries and Galloway when I was 4. When I was a wee girl, Dumfries was the big town we’d get the bus to once a week, where my mum would get her fruit and veg at the market, where the swimming pool was and all the shops and shoppers in the High Street, the vennel – and where the fair would land twice a year, the wonderful, terrifying, sickening, money-draining fair. As a teenager Dumfries was a Saturday hang out, later a pub venue (though the lack of night buses meant this was a rare affair). It was where I went to college, later university, where I had both babies, where hospital visits good and bad take place. Now, it’s where I volunteer at Oxfam Books and Music, trying to be of some use to the world, finding I maybe can be. So even just to me, Dumfries is not a single place; it’s all of this and much more. Add in the memories and experiences of all the others connected to Dumfries and what a rich and complex picture you’d have.

But Dumfries is also all the things that ever happened to make it what it is now – how the rocks were formed that it’s built on and of, how the soil was formed, how the river flows and why, how the climate is and has been. What plants grow here, and what other creatures we share it with. Which powerful and legendary people made which things happen. And all of this is interconnected.

In recent years, all the towns I know have changed; shops have closed and charity shops, e-cig outlets and bookies are dotted about between boarded up premises. Many of us still want to visit towns but it feels as though we don’t quite know what they’re for any more. Dumfries is in the midst of finding out who it wants to be, what it can be. Many incredibly positive, innovative and community-based placemaking projects are ongoing – including, but not limited to: The Stove Network, the Midsteeple Quarter), Incredible Edible, MOOL (Massive Outpouring of Love) and of course Oxfam Books and Music Dumfries’s various projects, including the current ‘Art Beats Poverty’ summer programme. In order to add to this, I’m going to do what I can to try to build up a portrait of who Dumfries is and has been. I hope that this can be ongoing and include the voices and perspectives of as many folk as possible.

First. Deep maps will be big – the issue of resolution and detail is addressed by size.

Second. Deep maps will be slow – they will naturally move at a speed of landform or weather.

Third. Deep maps will be sumptuous – they will embrace a range of different media or registers in a sophisticated and multilayered orchestration.

Fourth. Deep maps will only be achieved by the articulation of a variety of media – they will be genuinely multimedia, not as an aesthetic gesture or affectation, but as a practical necessity.

Fifth. Deep maps will have at least three basic elements – a graphic work (large, horizontal or vertical), a time-based media component (film, video, performance), and a database or archival system that remains open and unfinished.

Sixth. Deep maps will require the engagement of both the insider and outsider.

Seventh. Deep maps will bring together the amateur and the professional, the artist and the scientist, the official and the unofficial, the national and the local.

Eighth. Deep maps might only be possible and perhaps imaginable now – the digital processes at the heart of most modern media practices are allowing, for the first time, the easy combination of different orders of material – a new creative space.

Ninth. Deep maps will not seek the authority and objectivity of conventional cartography. They will be politicized, passionate, and partisan. They will involve negotiation and contestation over who and what is represented and how. They will give rise to debate about the documentation and portrayal of people and places.

Tenth. Deep maps will be unstable, fragile and temporary. They will be a conversation and not a statement."
