Heard the word "interstice" (pronouced as in-ter-stIce, with a long i as in "ice") in a Warhammer audiobook and thought, that can't be right, but I couldn't remember for the life of me what the singular of "interstices" actually was.

I've only heard "interstices" in the plural before, pronouced in-ter-sti-seez as though it's a Latin plural adapted into English, like "matrices" or "indices," which would suggest the singular is is "interstex" or "interstix".

But no, apparently "interstice" is the correct spelling of the singular form, although the internet dictionaries I've found say it should be "in-ter-stiss", with a short i. And it comes through old French "interstice" from Latin "interstitium", which would have a plural "interstitia," so the plural has NO BUSINESS being pronounced like in-ter-sti-seez in English. But it is, because English I guess.

Oh man Interstice, I feel like that is a deep cut as far as my goofy little Halo fanfictions go.

@godmybackhurts replied to a call for requests. If I recall correctly the prompt was something to the effect of "the galaxy isn't in danger and the chief gets to take a nap" (I can't find the original note, F).

That combined with how I'd been thinking about the events in First Strike on account of the Locklear fic, and some feelings I had about Cortana and the Chief's friendship merged in there.

....It counts as everyone lives and nothing hurts because nobody dies in the fic.
