The antitrust case against Apple
Tumblr media
I'm on tour with my new, nationally bestselling novel The Bezzle! Catch me TONIGHT (Mar 22) in TORONTO, then SUNDAY (Mar 24) with LAURA POITRAS in NYC, then Anaheim, and beyond!
Tumblr media
The foundational tenet of "the Cult of Mac" is that buying products from a $3t company makes you a member of an oppressed ethnic minority and therefore every criticism of that corporation is an ethnic slur:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/12/youre-holding-it-wrong/#if-dishwashers-were-iphones
Call it "Apple exceptionalism" – the idea that Apple, alone among the Big Tech firms, is virtuous, and therefore its conduct should be interpreted through that lens of virtue. The wellspring of this virtue is conveniently nebulous, which allows for endless goal-post shifting by members of the Cult of Mac when Apple's sins are made manifest.
Take the claim that Apple is "privacy respecting," which is attributed to Apple's business model of financing its services though cash transactions, rather than by selling it customers to advertisers. This is the (widely misunderstood) crux of the "surveillance capitalism" hypothesis: that capitalism is just fine, but once surveillance is in the mix, capitalism fails.
Apple, then, is said to be a virtuous company because its behavior is disciplined by market forces, unlike its spying rivals, whose ability to "hack our dopamine loops" immobilizes the market's invisible hand with "behavior-shaping" shackles:
http://pluralistic.net/HowToDestroySurveillanceCapitalism
Apple makes a big deal out of its privacy-respecting ethos, and not without some justification. After all, Apple went to the mattresses to fight the FBI when they tried to force Apple to introduced defects into its encryption systems:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2018/04/fbi-could-have-gotten-san-bernardino-shooters-iphone-leadership-didnt-say
And Apple gave Ios users the power to opt out of Facebook spying with a single click; 96% of its customers took them up on this offer, costing Facebook $10b (one fifth of the pricetag of the metaverse boondoggle!) in a single year (you love to see it):
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/02/facebook-makes-the-case-for-activity-tracking-to-ios-14-users-in-new-pop-ups/
Bruce Schneier has a name for this practice: "feudal security." That's when you cede control over your device to a Big Tech warlord whose "walled garden" becomes a fortress that defends you against external threats:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/06/08/leona-helmsley-was-a-pioneer/#manorialism
The keyword here is external threats. When Apple itself threatens your privacy, the fortress becomes a prison. The fact that you can't install unapproved apps on your Ios device means that when Apple decides to harm you, you have nowhere to turn. The first Apple customers to discover this were in China. When the Chinese government ordered Apple to remove all working privacy tools from its App Store, the company obliged, rather than risk losing access to its ultra-cheap manufacturing base (Tim Cook's signal accomplishment, the one that vaulted him into the CEO's seat, was figuring out how to offshore Apple manufacturing to China) and hundreds of millions of middle-class consumers:
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-apple-vpn/apple-says-it-is-removing-vpn-services-from-china-app-store-idUSKBN1AE0BQ
Killing VPNs and other privacy tools was just for openers. After Apple caved to Beijing, the demands kept coming. Next, Apple willingly backdoored all its Chinese cloud services, so that the Chinese state could plunder its customers' data at will:
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/17/technology/apple-china-censorship-data.html
This was the completely foreseeable consequence of Apple's "curated computing" model: once the company arrogated to itself the power to decide which software you could run on your own computer, it was inevitable that powerful actors – like the Chinese Communist Party – would lean on Apple to exercise that power in service to its goals.
Unsurprisingly, the Chinese state's appetite for deputizing Apple to help with its spying and oppression was not sated by backdooring iCloud and kicking VPNs out of the App Store. As recently as 2022, Apple continued to neuter its tools at the behest of the Chinese state, breaking Airdrop to make it useless for organizing protests in China:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/11/11/foreseeable-consequences/#airdropped
But the threat of Apple turning on its customers isn't limited to China. While the company has been unwilling to spy on its users on behalf of the US government, it's proven more than willing to compromise its worldwide users' privacy to pad its own profits. Remember when Apple let its users opt out of Facebook surveillance with one click? At the very same time, Apple was spinning up its own commercial surveillance program, spying on Ios customers, gathering the very same data as Facebook, and for the very same purpose: to target ads. When it came to its own surveillance, Apple completely ignored its customers' explicit refusal to consent to spying, spied on them anyway, and lied about it:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/11/14/luxury-surveillance/#liar-liar
Here's the thing: even if you believe that Apple has a "corporate personality" that makes it want to do the right thing, that desire to be virtuous is dependent on the constraints Apple faces. The fact that Apple has complete legal and technical control over the hardware it sells – the power to decide who can make software that runs on that hardware, the power to decide who can fix that hardware, the power to decide who can sell parts for that hardware – represents an irresistible temptation to enshittify Apple products.
"Constraints" are the crux of the enshittification hypothesis. The contagion that spread enshittification to every corner of our technological world isn't a newfound sadism or indifference among tech bosses. Those bosses are the same people they've always been – the difference is that today, they are unconstrained.
Having bought, merged or formed a cartel with all their rivals, they don't fear competition (Apple buys 90+ companies per year, and Google pays it an annual $26.3b bribe for default search on its operating systems and programs).
Having captured their regulators, they don't fear fines or other penalties for cheating their customers, workers or suppliers (Apple led the coalition that defeated dozens of Right to Repair bills, year after year, in the late 2010s).
Having wrapped themselves in IP law, they don't fear rivals who make alternative clients, mods, privacy tools or other "adversarial interoperability" tools that disenshittify their products (Apple uses the DMCA, trademark, and other exotic rules to block third-party software, repair, and clients).
True virtue rests not merely in resisting temptation to be wicked, but in recognizing your own weakness and avoiding temptation. As I wrote when Apple embarked on its "curated computing" path, the company would eventually – inevitably – use its power to veto its customers' choices to harm those customers:
https://memex.craphound.com/2010/04/01/why-i-wont-buy-an-ipad-and-think-you-shouldnt-either/
Which is where we're at today. Apple – uniquely among electronics companies – shreds every device that is traded in by its customers, to block third parties from harvesting working components and using them for independent repair:
https://www.vice.com/en/article/yp73jw/apple-recycling-iphones-macbooks
Apple engraves microscopic Apple logos on those parts and uses these as the basis for trademark complaints to US customs, to block the re-importation of parts that escape its shredders:
https://repair.eu/news/apple-uses-trademark-law-to-strengthen-its-monopoly-on-repair/
Apple entered into an illegal price-fixing conspiracy with Amazon to prevent used and refurbished devices from being sold in the "world's biggest marketplace":
https://pluralistic.net/2022/11/10/you-had-one-job/#thats-just-the-as
Why is Apple so opposed to independent repair? Well, they say it's to keep users safe from unscrupulous or incompetent repair technicians (feudal security). But when Tim Cook speaks to his investors, he tells a different story, warning them that the company's profits are threatened by customers who choose to repair (rather than replace) their slippery, fragile glass $1,000 pocket computers (the fortress becomes a prison):
https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2019/01/letter-from-tim-cook-to-apple-investors/
All this adds up to a growing mountain of immortal e-waste, festooned with miniature Apple logos, that our descendants will be dealing with for the next 1,000 years. In the face of this unspeakable crime, Apple engaged in a string of dishonest maneuvers, claiming that it would support independent repair. In 2022, Apple announced a home repair program that turned out to be a laughably absurd con:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/05/22/apples-cement-overshoes/
Then in 2023, Apple announced a fresh "pro-repair" initiative that, once again, actually blocked repair:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/22/vin-locking/#thought-differently
Let's pause here a moment and remember that Apple once stood for independent repair, and celebrated the independent repair technicians that kept its customers' beloved Macs running:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/10/29/norwegian-potato-flour-enchiladas/#r2r
Whatever virtue lurks in Apple's corporate personhood, it is no match for the temptation that comes from running a locked-down platform designed to capture IP rights so that it can prevent normal competitive activities, like fixing phones, processing payments, or offering apps.
When Apple rolled out the App Store, Steve Jobs promised that it would save journalism and other forms of "content creation" by finally giving users a way to pay rightsholders. A decade later, that promise has been shattered by the app tax – a 30% rake on every in-app transaction that can't be avoided because Apple will kick your app out of the App Store if you even mention that your customers can pay you via the web in order to avoid giving a third of their content dollars to a hardware manufacturer that contributed nothing to the production of that material:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/06/save-news-we-must-open-app-stores
Among the apps that Apple also refuses to allow on Ios is third-party browsers. Every Iphone browser is just a reskinned version of Apple's Safari, running on the same antiquated, insecure Webkit browser engine. The fact that Webkit is incomplete and outdated is a feature, not a bug, because it lets Apple block web apps – apps delivered via browsers, rather than app stores:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/12/13/kitbashed/#app-store-tax
Last month, the EU took aim at Apple's veto over its users' and software vendors' ability to transact with one another. The newly in-effect Digital Markets Act requires Apple to open up both third-party payment processing and third-party app stores. Apple's response to this is the very definition of malicious compliance, a snake's nest of junk-fees, onerous terms of service, and petty punitive measures that all add up to a great, big "Go fuck yourself":
https://pluralistic.net/2024/02/06/spoil-the-bunch/#dma
But Apple's bullying, privacy invasion, price-gouging and environmental crimes are global, and the EU isn't the only government seeking to end them. They're in the firing line in Japan:
https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Technology/Japan-to-crack-down-on-Apple-and-Google-app-store-monopolies
And in the UK:
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/cma-wins-appeal-in-apple-case
And now, famously, the US Department of Justice is coming for Apple, with a bold antitrust complaint that strikes at the heart of Apple exceptionalism, the idea that monopoly is safer for users than technological self-determination:
https://www.justice.gov/opa/media/1344546/dl?inline
There's passages in the complaint that read like I wrote them:
Apple wraps itself in a cloak of privacy, security, and consumer preferences to justify its anticompetitive conduct. Indeed, it spends billions on marketing and branding to promote the self-serving premise that only Apple can safeguard consumers’ privacy and security interests. Apple selectively compromises privacy and security interests when doing so is in Apple’s own financial interest—such as degrading the security of text messages, offering governments and certain companies the chance to access more private and secure versions of app stores, or accepting billions of dollars each year for choosing Google as its default search engine when more private options are available. In the end, Apple deploys privacy and security justifications as an elastic shield that can stretch or contract to serve Apple’s financial and business interests.
After all, Apple punishes its customers for communicating with Android users by forcing them to do so without any encryption. When Beeper Mini rolled out an Imessage-compatible Android app that fixed this, giving Iphone owners the privacy Apple says they deserve but denies to them, Apple destroyed Beeper Mini:
https://blog.beeper.com/p/beeper-moving-forward
Tim Cook is on record about this: if you want to securely communicate with an Android user, you must "buy them an Iphone":
https://www.theverge.com/2022/9/7/23342243/tim-cook-apple-rcs-imessage-android-iphone-compatibility
If your friend, family member or customer declines to change mobile operating systems, Tim Cook insists that you must communicate without any privacy or security.
Even where Apple tries for security, it sometimes fails ("security is a process, not a product" -B. Schneier). To be secure in a benevolent dictatorship, it must also be an infallible dictatorship. Apple's far from infallible: Eight generations of Iphones have unpatchable hardware defects:
https://checkm8.info/
And Apple's latest custom chips have secret-leaking, unpatchable vulnerabilities:
https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/03/hackers-can-extract-secret-encryption-keys-from-apples-mac-chips/
Apple's far from infallible – but they're also far from benevolent. Despite Apple's claims, its hardware, operating system and apps are riddled with deliberate privacy defects, introduce to protect Apple's shareholders at the expense of its customers:
https://proton.me/blog/iphone-privacy
Now, antitrust suits are notoriously hard to make, especially after 40 years of bad-precedent-setting, monopoly-friendly antitrust malpractice. Much of the time, these suits fail because they can't prove that tech bosses intentionally built their monopolies. However, tech is a written culture, one that leaves abundant, indelible records of corporate deliberations. What's more, tech bosses are notoriously prone to bragging about their nefarious intentions, committing them to writing:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/03/big-tech-cant-stop-telling-on-itself/
Apple is no exception – there's an abundance of written records that establish that Apple deliberately, illegally set out to create and maintain a monopoly:
https://www.wired.com/story/4-internal-apple-emails-helped-doj-build-antitrust-case/
Apple claims that its monopoly is beneficent, used to protect its users, making its products more "elegant" and safe. But when Apple's interests conflict with its customers' safety and privacy – and pocketbooks – Apple always puts itself first, just like every other corporation. In other words: Apple is unexceptional.
The Cult of Mac denies this. They say that no one wants to use a third-party app store, no one wants third-party payments, no one wants third-party repair. This is obviously wrong and trivially disproved: if no Apple customer wanted these things, Apple wouldn't have to go to enormous lengths to prevent them. The only phones that an independent Iphone repair shop fixes are Iphones: which means Iphone owners want independent repair.
The rejoinder from the Cult of Mac is that those Iphone owners shouldn't own Iphones: if they wanted to exercise property rights over their phones, they shouldn't have bought a phone from Apple. This is the "No True Scotsman" fallacy for distraction-rectangles, and moreover, it's impossible to square with Tim Cook's insistence that if you want private communications, you must buy an Iphone.
Apple is unexceptional. It's just another Big Tech monopolist. Rounded corners don't preserve virtue any better than square ones. Any company that is freed from constraints – of competition, regulation and interoperability – will always enshittify. Apple – being unexceptional – is no exception.

The Recovery Files: Rewind 2017
Tumblr media
intro
“Ask Lee Chan. He’s got one of those things, doesn’t he?”
At the sound of his name, Chan raises his head from where he was sifting through an old filing cabinet.
Two of the other boys in his group — which was tasked to clear out one of the many old storage rooms in the fine arts building — stand over an open cardboard box, one poking through the contents inside and one waving Chan over.
“Hey,” Jibeom says when Chan approaches the table. “You’ve got one of those Walkman things, don’t you?”
“Yeah, why?”
Donghyun pushes the box across the table so Chan can look inside. A bunch of cassette tapes are stacked haphazardly within, and tucked to the side are several bubblewrap-lined envelopes. “Looks like something you might be interested in.”
Chan reaches inside and pulls out one of the tapes. Its label is worn and yellowed, but he can clearly read the words written in black marker.
06 Lee Seokmin
Jibeom fishes one out as well. “They’re from 2017.”
“I’m pretty sure that’s when the iPhone 8 came out,” Donghyun says. “Who’s recording on cassette tapes in 2017?”
Chan flips the tape over, but there’s nothing on the back. “I don’t know…” He takes the lid of the cardboard box and traces his fingers over the name written on top, which has the same handwriting as the tapes. “Some guy named Woozi, I guess. Do you guys think anyone will care if I take these home to check them out?”
Jibeom and Donghyun look at each other, then to Chan. They both shrug.

[Tradução]BUZZ ROCK RADIO - RUKI x REITA (1 e 8 de Dez/2014)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
01/12/2014 (RUKI x REITA)
Reita: Sim, sim, sim.
Ruki: Eu trago... sim. Eu trouxe.
(3)  O que os outros membros costumam fazer?
Ruki: Jogar video game.
DJ: Os 3 jogam?
Ruki: Não, esse cara (Reita) também jogo.
Reita: Eu jogo, mas também leio histórias.
Reita: Mas geralmente eles estão na internet.
Ruki: Hum, sim.
Reita: Eu tenho me apegado ao Android!
COMPROU! I6!)
Ruki: Não é o 6. É o 6 plus.
Reita: Não é a mesma coisa?!
Ruki: Não é a mesma coisa!
Reita: É a mesma coisa sim!
Ruki: Eles são diferentes!
DJ: Não discuta!
Ruki: Um huhu....
DJ: Então todos os 5 membros do GazettE têm iPhones.
Reite: É verdade.
Ruki: Sim.
Ruki: Mas eu tenho o 6, e é o 6 plus.

Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
we love jim carrey!!!
.

How to create an NFT for free
Tumblr media
So, you want to know how to create an NFT for free? This tutorial will show you how. It’s way simpler to create, or ‘mint’ an NFT than you’d imagine — and doing it for free is just as easy. In this tutorial, I will create a single NFT artwork, and not delve into minting generative NFTs or an NFT collection.
But, what are NFTs? I hear you ask. Well, these non-fungible tokens are everywhere but they’re not actually as complex as they first seem. Basically, NFTs are a way of registering a digital file on a cryptocurrency blockchain, to make sure it’s a unique item and demonstrate ownership. Need more? See our guide to how to make and sell an NFT, but here I’ll show you how to specifically create an NFT for free.
You might assume you’ll need a computer or laptop to create an NFT. While that’s obviously possible, you can also do it on your mobile device. The best NFT apps for iPhone allow you to create an NFT on the go, and check out how your collection is doing. Plus, you can track NFTs on different blockchains. With that in mind, some of the steps below for creating an NFT for free are applicable, but I’m using a desktop browser and Wacom Studio tablet.
Once you have your NFT you’ll want to show it off in style, so consider buying one of the best NFT displays. For more on the top end of digital art frames read my feature ‘Why Tokenframe is one of the best NFT frames for digital art’.
How to create an NFT for free: the steps
01. Creating a crypto wallet account
You’re going to need a cryptocurrency wallet to set up an account on any NFT marketplace in order to create your NFT. We’re choosing Metamask as it’s one of the most widely used and accessible. There are alternatives, such as Coinbase wallet.
When you create your wallet account you’ll be given a 12 word ‘seed phrase’, this is your unique password. Keep it safe and don’t share it anywhere, the seed phrase acts as your security code (handy if you forget your password).
02. Making an account on an NFT marketplace
For this tutorial I’m creating an account on Rarible, but the same approach applies to any NFT marketplace. Read my guide to the best NFT marketplaces to find the right one for you.
Once you set up our account (adding a user name, photo, bio, etc.) link your Metamask account to your Rarible account by following the instructions. Linking your two accounts ensures your NFTs will appear in your wallet and all transactions can be easily completed (you’ll need to go into Metamask’s settings to automatically bring in your NFTs). My Metamask account also acts as my Rarible login.
Spend some time personalising your NFT marketplace account, adding a banner image, and linking in your social media accounts. The more time spent ensuring your socials are connected the better; you’ll find your art is more visible the more time you take to add detail into your page.
03. Painting some art
For this guide to how to create an NFT for free I quickly create a new piece of art. I google some random photo references and create a sketch using the painting app Rebelle 5; it’s quick and I’m not focusing on detail but a general sense of the face and proportions. (Read my Rebelle 5 review to find out more about this excellent digital art software.)
An NFT can be any digital file so create the art you enjoy making, but here I’m choosing a digital painting. I save the new painting as a jpeg and prepare to upload it to my new NFT marketplace account and mint it as an NFT.
04. Uploading your art
It’s time to upload my art and begin creating an NFT for free. These NFT marketplace sites like Rarible have very user-friendly guides to uploading your art and the process is generally the same (some select NFT marketplaces may want verify you, and this can take a few days). Click the Create tab in the top right of your account and continue.
You’ll now need to choose a blockchain. On Rarible there are four choices, including the new low-carbon cryptos Flow, Tezos and Polygon. (We have a must-read guide to the most popular NFT crypto to decide which is best for you.) To create an NFT for free I choose Ethereum.
05. Choosing free minting
The next options help your decide the value and type of NFT you’re creating, for example choose Single to create a one-off unique NFT or Multiple to mint a series of NFTs to create a collection. (Take a look at my NFT trends feature for inspiration.) Set the price, add a name and description, and make sure you switch Free Minting to ‘On’.
Free minting, or lazy minting, enables you to put the fees for minting onto the buyer so you won’t be charged. Usually you’re charged ‘gas fees’ — the cost of transacting on the blockchain — to mint an NFT. The unit of gas is called a ‘Gwei’. Depending on the traffic on the blockchain as you’re minting the fee can increase or decrease; the greater the traffic the higher the cost. Often it can be cheaper in the late evening or early morning.
But… I’m not being charged if I choose Free Minting. The downside to pushing the gas fees onto the buyer is you may need to lower your asking price to anticipate the later cost, or mint your NFT as an auction and let the buyer decide.
06. The NFT is minted
On Rarible, when the NFT is minted you get a lovely explosion of digital confetti. Now the real work begins. It’s best to social and post about your new NFT as soon as possible. You can link the new NFT directly to Twitter, Facebook, and other social media channels from within the NFT marketplace.
You see, minting an NFT for free is easy but there are some things you need to know; the advantage of free minting enables you to quickly create an NFT for free but it can have some drawbacks as NFT marketplaces tend to make ‘normal’ NFTs more visible. Because of this you’ll need to make more of your own social channels for promotion. You can find this NFT on Rarible(opens in new tab) to see how it looks in the wild.
How to create an NFT for free: frequent questions
What’s a blockchain?
This is a database that is shared amongst the nodes of a computer network. Each block in the chain contains data and constantly check and update the data. This makes any assets on the blockchain immutable, which ensures the data is extremely hard to change or delete. These are decentralised networks, meaning there is no third-party involved and all data is freely available for view and tracking.
What gives an NFT value?
Rarity and / or status help an NFT achieve value. So, for example, an NFT created by established artists such as Beeple, Damien Hirst, and Takashi Murakami will be worth a lot. But NFTs are breaking the rules. New artists are finding new ways to ensure NFTs differ from traditional art valuations. Community and utility is a major factor. Think of an NFT such as a Bored Ape Yacht Club as a ticket to a club, and that club will have exclusive events, chat groups and projects to be involved with; these community driven NFTs have great value.
Why is an NFT jpeg worth so much?
An NFT jpeg is worth so much because it’s not the jpeg that is being bought, but the hash token on the blockchain. The Crypto Punk art is the visual ‘thing’ we can find easy to understand, but the true value of the NFT is its token and the benefits it can bring by being on a blockchain. This can include being invited to exclusive in real life events.
How much does it cost to make an NFT?
It can be free, if you use lazy minting. Standard NFTs can vary wildly in the cost of gas fees to generate and register on a blockchain, and the costs rises and falls as the blockchain is being used. A typical NFT can cost anywhere from $10 / £7 to ¢$200 / £170. We have known of fees to reach $2,000 / £1,700.
What kinds of NFTs sell the best?
NFTs that have utility will always sell well as they embrace the full functionality of the blockchain. This is why you will find the below NFTs are some of the most popular.
1. Bored Ape Yacht Club 2. CryptoPunks 3. The Sandbox 4. Art Blocks 5. Doodles 6. Cool Cats 7. Decentraland 8. World of Women
Can I avoid gas fees without using lazy minting?
Yes, to a degree. Newer NFT crypto blockchains such as Wax enable you to set the gas fee limit you’re will to pay to mint an NFT. It will be processed and minted at a time when the gas fee matches your set level. Also, consider avoiding minting an NFT on Tuesdays and Thursdays as these are historically the busiest days and so the costliest.

The jury gave him a lighter punishment than the life sentence he could have received.

Ex-police officer Aaron Dean has been sentenced to over 11 years in prison for the fatal shooting of Atatiana Jefferson, according to an ABC News report. The sentencing comes four years after the incident and a series of delays to the trial. Dean could’ve gotten more time is convicted of a harsher murder charge.

Dean will spend the next 11 years, 10 months and 12 days in prison. The report says because his sentence extends beyond 10 years, he’s not eligible for probation.
A number of witnesses brought the jury to their decision including a psychologist who said Dean was mentally unfit for police work, a woman who accused Dean of sexual assault in 2004 and Dean’s colleague who confirmed Dean did not mention sight of a gun the night of the incident. The defense countered that with the testimonies of a few of Dean’s churchgoers to convince the jury he was “upright” and “noble.”

Dean took the stand himself insisting he was staring down the barrel of Jefferson’s gun, scared for his life. Turns out that wasn’t enough to justify the shooting and killing of an innocent woman.

The jury deliberated for 13 hours to come up with the manslaughter verdict. A felony murder charge, which he faced initially, would have sent Dean to prison for life with a $10,000 fine on top of that, per NBC News.
This victory is reassuring that some cops could face real accountability for their actions. Look at George Floyd’s killers. But, it’s also bittersweet given there are so many more victims of police brutality whose killers still walk free.

Review of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max: Excellent phones, but the Pro Max falls short
Tumblr media
The iPhone 13 Pro in Sierra Blue and the iPhone 13 Pro Max in Graphite are both in stock. The iPhone 13 Pro, which consumers use on a daily basis, is a 512GB model. For the first time this year, Apple updated its storage capabilities to offer a new 1TB option.
A well-known design
The layout has remained unchanged. It largely adopts its physical look from the iPhone 12 as it generally does the year after an iPhone enclosure overhaul.
The stainless steel body of the 2021 iPhone range is placed between ultra-strong glasses on all models. The rear glass is frosted, as opposed to the glossy back of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 minis.
As Apple tinkered with the internal arrangement, several buttons on the sides have changed. Both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro include larger batteries and a redesigned True Depth module. The side button, volume buttons, and mute toggle have all been pushed down significantly as a result of this many business listings.
They're also a tad thicker, with a difference of.01 inch. Weight has increased from 189g to 204g on the iPhone 13 Pro and 228g to 240g on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, owing to the larger battery.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max was already a hefty phone, which made it nearly impossible for people to operate. Although the increased weight isn't significant, we'd prefer to see the weight go in the opposite direction for a phone as large as this. It's simply too huge and hefty for most individuals.
Graphite, silver, and gold all stayed unchanged from the previous year; however Pacific Blue has been replaced by a new, lighter Sierra Blue. For this new colour, Apple is employing a new technique that combines "many layers of nanometer-scale metallic ceramics coated across the surface for a striking and lasting finish"
It's definitely not as dark as the Pacific Blue. Users said they wanted greater contrast in hues, not simply more pastels, according to user feedback, yet we like it. However, a complete matte black version from Apple in 2022 would be fantastic.
The new display
The display is the only physical difference between the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The iPhone range has been brightened, the notch has been decreased, and Promotion has been added.
The brightness has been boosted from the standard 800 nits to 1000 nits. This isn't significant for indoor use.
However, if you spend a lot of time outside and the sun makes it difficult to view your phone screen, this will assist. Just don't anticipate a huge change.
The notch is smaller on one side but "deeper" on the other. This is good, but Apple has done nothing with the extra space in the operating system, including failing to display the battery % on the screen. The largest advantage is that you receive a smidgeon extra photo or video space when you consume media, albeit this is dependent on the aspect ratio you're seeing.
ProMotion is a valuable addition that must be experienced in order to fully appreciate it. As we put down the iPhone 13 Pro Max and picked up the older iPhone 12 Pro Max, it was comparable to viewing HD and then going back to SD business listings.
This technology, which was initially introduced on the iPad, allows the screen refresh rate to dynamically ramp up to 120Hz when motion is required and then drop down when not in use to conserve battery life. ProMotion is on the iPad Pros and can go up to 120Hz, but it can't go as low as it can on the iPhone.
When greater refresh rates aren't required, the new iPhone 13 Pros can go as low as 10Hz, resulting in even more energy savings.
It's mainly evident right now in Safari and while sliding between Home Screens. Currently, there aren't a lot of third-party applications that support the functionality. Apple claims that it will come in more games and that it will be easy to integrate in the near future.
The higher the refresh rate, the more sensitive your phone is to your touch and the more you feel like you're engaging with it. The extent to which something matters or is apparent to a particular user varies.
We predict phablet aficionados to acquire a disproportionate quantity of iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max units in the first month. However, as has usually been the case, the iPhone 13 Pro will become the far more popular option over time. Both the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the iPhone 12 Pro Max have been used as daily vehicles by this reviewer.
With the iPhone 13 family, that's all there is to it. Apple has yet to fully exploit the bigger screen's potential.
Minimal use, maximum size
With its "plus" or "max" phones, Apple has had several opportunities to impress, but the variations have been minor.
Aside from battery life, Apple has failed to provide any practical benefit with the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Apple has a lot more potential.
Apple's rationale of not being able to fit more on the screen is flawed. Despite the fact that users hold the bigger tablet farther away from their faces, the widgets on the all-new iPad mini are smaller than those on the iPhone 13 Pro Max free business listings.
We want an option for that on the iPhone when we see the tiny icons on the iPad mini dock and the smaller widgets that users can pack in.
Split-screen apps, additional rows of icons on the Home Screen, larger widgets, a bidirectional charger for longer battery life, and an extra row on the keyboard are all gone. Apple has a lot of options here, but all it does is scale everything up from the iPhone 13 Pro.
Now that the cameras are comparable, we've opted to forego the largest iPhone and instead go for the iPhone 13 pro, saving money in the process.
We'll happily return once Apple begins to appreciate the larger display and larger dimensions.
Cameras
This time around, both the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max have the same trio of cameras, erasing the one characteristic that set the iPhone 13 Pro Max apart.
A 1X wide angle lens, a.5X ultra-wide lens with a 120-degree field of vision, and a 3X optical telephoto lens are all included in each phone. They both have the LiDAR Scanner, which helps with low-light focus as well as a variety of AR techniques.
Exceptional quality
At this level, not all changes are obvious, and they aren't very showy. They do, however, make a huge impact.
The camera bump got a little bigger. It is noticeably bigger than the iPhone 12 Pro, especially for the iPhone 13 Pro.
Apple has expanded the sensor size on the iPhone's most-used camera, the wide-angle lens, as well as added a new wider aperture. This was already a fantastic camera, but the enhancements have made it much better.
The hardware stack of the camera is responsible for any grain or noise in a picture. While a number of interconnected variables can create aberrations, the most common reason is a reduction in the quantity of light reaching the sensor.
A smaller sensor with the same resolution has fewer detectors per pixel, thus it sees less light. A narrower aperture allows less light to reach the sensor. Because there is less light streaming in, the camera must convert to Night Mode or leave the shutter open longer, which might result in blur, grain, and other irregularities.
Because of the iPhone 13 Pro's bigger sensor and increased aperture from f/1.6 to f/1.5, the camera will have Apple switch to Night Mode less frequently, resulting in less noise overall. This is exactly what we observed when we tested the two cameras. When the iPhone 12 Pro tried to activate Night Mode, the iPhone 13 handled it admirably.
Both gadgets will feature the same lens and sensor camera configuration in 2021. Although the tele lenses on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have differing focal lengths, they were both updated to 3X optical zoom this year.
As a result, digital zoom has been raised to 15 times. You can zoom in even more than before, but it's still not worth it. We saw significant noise in these photographs at 15X digital zoom, and it became more difficult to hold the camera stable.
It's still feasible to do, and you can still take good shots in well-lit areas, but as Apple has stated, most people don't require a lot of magnification. If you do, invest in a digital SLR and a suitable lens, or choose one of the several tele Snap-On lenses that will soon be available for the iPhone 13 Pro.
For Portrait Mode photographs, the tele lens zooms in closer than it has in the past. We had to rethink whether to use the wide or tele cameras on some photographs since the tele lens was now a little too much. At the same time, it enabled us to get some beautiful Portrait Mode images from a distance.
All of this leads us to the vastly improved ultra-wide lens. Apple has increased the aperture from f/2.4 to f/1.8, which is substantially quicker.
The super wide screen was Apple's flaw in the iPhone 12 range. Because of the tight entrance, too much noise came in, resulting in some curiously styled photos. Because of the lack of light, the shutter was somewhat slower, resulting in fuzzy photos if the subject or our hand moved at all.
It also reverted to Night Mode more frequently than we preferred. Night Mode is amazing, but you'll need a steady hand and a still subject to get the most out of it. It's never worth it if you can obtain a similar photo without it.
Mode Macro
That new ultra-wide lens also has a surprise up its sleeve. As you go closer to your subject, it may intelligently transition to the new Macro Mode. In Macro Mode, you can reach within two centimetres of your subject, and the results are stunning.
Photographic Techniques
Photographic Styles is another function that is available throughout Apple's whole iPhone 13 series this year. This is similar to a professional photographer developing a distinct "style" for their photographs to make them stand out.
Photographic Styles are applied at the moment of capture, rather than applying a LUT or filter afterward. Photographic Styles employ complex techniques to apply varying levels of correction to other regions of your shot, whereas a basic filter provides a general appearance over the top of the image as a whole.
Standard — this is the Camera app's default style, which strives to be as true to life as possible without being excessively saturated — rich contrast, bright, cool, and warm are the options.
Within the Settings app, Apple has created an excellent explanation of these many designs. You may observe how each style alters the appearance of an example image.
After you've decided on a style, you may fine-tune it to your taste. Between -100 and 100, tone and warmth can be adjusted to create a stronger or weaker impression.
With existing filter procedures, the iPhone 13's capability will most likely be unnoticed. Because the iPhone 13 Pro was chosen by the market, photography is likely to receive more attention and upgrades as time goes on.
Gains in performance are not overlooked
Apple's newest square of silicon powers the new iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The A15 Bionic CPU outperforms its predecessor in terms of speed, battery efficiency, and graphics capability. It's still a six-core processor with two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores, but it's more powerful today.
Everything, from the camera's ISP to the Promotion display to the highly efficient battery, is powered by the A15 Bionic. Even if Apple isn't shouting from the rafters about how quick the iPhone 13 Pro is, it should be. This item outperforms the competition and will undoubtedly supply the required bandwidth for many years.
The key new feature is the battery
With the outward change, there will be an inside overhaul as well. And, as a result of the inside overhaul, there is more capacity for a larger battery.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max lasted over 10 hours in a battery test that included keeping the screen on all the time, playing back films, and browsing Safari. This was around an hour and a half longer than the iPhone 13 Pro and about two hours longer than the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
User to user, use cases differ greatly. The length of time a battery lasts in use is determined by a number of factors. Even though it isn't reflective of your everyday chores, it illustrates how much longer the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max can endure in similar conditions.
Let's take a step back for a second. We've been tough on some of the iPhone 13 Pro Max's flaws and the seemingly endless list of difficulties, but it doesn't negate the fact that they are outstanding phones. They are beyond a doubt.
