chapter III | admonitio
Tumblr media
summary: “Why would you be a suspect, Doctor Valencia?” Agent Prentiss closed the file she had been reading for the past ten minutes to intertwine her fingers on top of the manila folder. Her eyes scanned Iris with a neutral expression. It made Iris so frustrated that she never let any emotion show. She could see — practically feel — Spencer's concern but Agent Prentiss was a huge question mark for her.
“You don't have to call me that.” Iris looked away from her gaze. She hated it when people addressed her by her honorific. Yes, she was intimidated. How would she not be? “Iris is fine and I don't know, maybe because I've been stuck in here through the entire night and you don't tell me what's going on?”

❝Admonitio❞
[n.] A WARNING.
Tumblr media
The sounds in the interrogation room didn't reach her ears until a deep voice brought her back to reality. The first thing she was able to see clearly was a glass of water, small droplets traveled down the cup. The outline of her lips stained the glass and she could see it because of the reflection against the light.
She had a sip of water a minute ago. Maybe an hour. Iris wasn't quite aware of how much time she had spent in that grey soulless room with two people entering and leaving. First, a blonde woman, Jennifer, who asked if she was okay and brought her the glass of water. Her voice reminded her of a soft blanket on a cold night. Secondly, Hotchner, who carried a stern expression with his brows pulled slightly. Iris didn't mean to think he wasn't gentle too, but she had watched enough crime shows to know there was a dynamic of good cop and bad cop and it was clear which was who from the two.
The fluorescent lights made her head pang painfully. She had not slept or rested since the nightmare began. And she was thirsty, but she found herself unable to grab the glass of water right in front of her due to her shaky hands. She was sure that if she did, it would topple over the table and cause a mess. That was the last thing she needed to do in front of an FBI Agent.
Agent Hotchner called her name one more time.
"Sorry," Iris closed her hands into fists and slowly unclenched them. She felt less numb, but her brain wasn't cooperating as she would like. Focus, Iris. "Can you—can you repeat that? I wasn't... paying attention. I'm sorry."
━━━━━━━━━ ✉ ━━━━━━━━
"She's still in shock."
"Of course she is! There is nothing more terrifying than walking into your home to find a threatening message written in... ugh, blood. This is so 1996."
JJ frowned confused. "Why 1996?"
Penelope let out a heavy sigh through the line. "Because, my beautiful and shiny friend, it was the year for Slasher movies. Now, I'm sure boy genius there can tell you all about the horror sub-genre later on but I have some news regarding Dr. Valencia."
Rossi glanced at Spencer out of the corner of his eye, he still hadn't moved an inch from his position. He was too focused on the questioning to notice his name was being mentioned. The crossed arms and tensed shoulders weren't a strange body reaction during an investigation, but if there was one thing that Rossi could point out, it was that the kid's gaze kept glued to only one person ever since she arrived at the precinct. He wasn't sure why yet, but he would find out.
"Go ahead, Garcia. Fill us in." Rossi requested, turning back to the discussion.
“Yeah, so. Iris Adley Valencia. She has a BMed in Medical Studies and a PhD in Microbiology — giving you a run for your money, boy wonder — which is what she teaches at NSU. Oh, and look at that, she recently turned 31! Anyway—”
“Recently?” Spencer piped in for the first time in a while. The three other people in the room gave him odd looks. He cleared his throat, shrugging.
“... here's what's interesting. Mark Dawson is a hotshot lecturer. He travels all over the world to give lectures about genetics and stuff, besides working as a professor at NSU. Now, remember that I tell you that he's a hotshot, right? Well, I happen to have found out that his last name is actually very important. His mother is a retired successful lawyer and his dad, god bless him, worked in the same area. The whole family are huge investors in medical devices—”
“Garcia, does he have anything to do with Iris?”
“I'm getting there!” Penelope huffed about Rossi being impatient. “Okay, so as I was saying. His family is influential, he is influential... keep that in mind. Now, about Iris. She graduated early and kept studying all her life. She officially became a professor at NSU three years ago. But what I was getting at is that Iris and Mark were involved not very long ago. Engaged, actually. They actually became headlines on the news.” The incessant tapping of her keyboard echoed through the line.
“There is no ring on her finger,” JJ observed, confused.
“They broke it off, apparently. And Iris filed a report of domestic abuse against him a year ago, but she withdrew her charges. It never even became a case. But guys, she wasn't the only one. As of now, I have found four women who filed reports against Mark Dawson but it never moved forward.”
“You think his family did something to cover it up.” JJ looked up when Spencer made the comment.
“Most likely.” She sighed, mumbling something under her breath. “I've sent you the archived reports. I do not want to look at these pictures anymore. Aaaaand, one more thing. Fabian Helley. The kid went through hell ever since he entered NSU. There are pictures and videos in which he's being bullied by a group of guys. They are all over these kids' social media, it's like they don't even care!”
“Was Iris involved in any way?” JJ asked, trying to find a reason for the cryptic message written in blood left on Iris Valencia's apartment door last night.
“No, but she did appear in one of the videos asking the group to stop harassing Fabian. That's what I have for now, guys.”
“Thank you, Pen.”
“PG out.”
Rossi sighed. “It doesn't make any sense for Helley to be on the run and then come back to make a direct threat towards Valencia. Not if she wasn't involved.”
JJ nodded, “it doesn't seem like she turned a blind eye to it, either.”
“According to Dawson's statement, we should investigate Helley because he was attached to Iris,” Rossi pondered as Hotch entered the room.
Spencer watched as Iris nervously fidgeted on the other side of the two-way mirror. He couldn't imagine how uncomfortable she must have been feeling being interrogated through the entire night. She hadn't slept, or eaten anything.
“Morgan and Prentiss are following the last address where Fitz’s credit card was used.” Hotch alerted them while pushing his phone back on his suit. His permanent frown deepened as he glanced at a distressed Iris on the other side of the room. “The place is one hour away from Valencia's neighborhood and the credit card was used ten minutes before in a grocery store. Helley didn't write that message.”
“Someone left the flowers and the card to look like he did it,” Spencer concluded, folding his arms across his chest. His jaw clenched in anticipation.
Hotch nodded, “we profiled that they are a team.”
“They wouldn't split up right now,” Rossi added.
“Exactly.”
“You think someone is framing this kid?”
“Framing or no framing, he is not innocent, as much as she believes that,” his attention drifts back to his vibrating cell phone. Prentiss popping up on the screen. “But someone is taking advantage of his outburst to use it in their favor.”
━━━━━━━━━ ✉ ━━━━━━━━
“Sorry to keep you waiting.”
Iris blinked out of her daydream to watch two different people enter the interrogation room. A good-looking brunette dressed in a red tank top shirt and a dark blazer who was also at the university for the investigation a day prior, she couldn't remember her name. Honestly, Iris was too tired to be remembering people. And Spencer, who was wearing a light brown sweater vest on top of a white button-up. If Iris wasn't so exhausted she might have found that cute, especially because of the Converse as a choice for shoes. He's got a unique sense of style.
However, the only thing in her mind was that there was a huge possibility that the FBI thought she was a suspect and that was why they had not let her go yet. She was telling the truth, but that didn't matter if they didn't think so. Should she request a lawyer? Should she stop talking? But she's telling the truth! She doesn't need a lawyer if she's telling the truth, right? And why would she even be a suspect— what if they thought she had made up the blood message at her door? Is that what they were thinking—
“Do you need a minute?”
She inhaled sharply, retracting her hands from the table as quickly as her spine straightened. Her brain was almost shortcut when the slightest of warmth approached her skin to touch her.
Her therapist said that signs of trauma can manifest in different situations, even non-threatening ones. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental illness she has dealt with ever since the end of her last relationship. The symptoms she experiences may bring up a response in which she's not fully conscious of, like flinching.
The innocent of touches from a stranger can drive Iris to have flashbacks running through her mind. Even if, consciously, Iris knew the person in front of her wouldn't purposely harm her. Especially because of his heartbroken gaze upon seeing her flinch.
“I'm fine,” Iris replied to his question as the Agent beside him watched their exchange. “Sorry, I didn't get your name, Agent...”
“Prentiss,” The brunette said with a small smile. Right, this must be Emily Prentiss. “We'd like to ask you a few questions if you don't mind.”
“I've said everything I know about what happened, I'm sorry if it wasn't helpful—”
Emily shook her head, “no, no, it was very helpful, but what we want to know is regarding Mark and Meredith's relationship.”
Iris's dark brows pulled in confusion, “what do you mean? Meredith was part of his study group, that's all.” Relationship? What did that mean?
Spencer and Agent Prentiss shared a glance, which made Iris shift in her seat uncomfortably. What did they know that she didn't? Iris had to stop herself from thinking the wildest things.
“So they met each other in this study group? As well as Fabian Helley?”
“Yes.”
“Was he her professor in any other classes?”
“No. Only in the study group. What... What is this about?” Iris was antsy for being out of the loop. What were they insinuating? “Look, I know I'm a suspect and I understand that you're trying to investigate the people around me but—”
“Why would you be a suspect, Doctor Valencia?” Agent Prentiss closed the file she had been reading for the past ten minutes to intertwine her fingers on top of the manila folder.
“You haven't asked for a lawyer.”
Spencer gave his coworker a glare as his jaw clenched. This had been a bold comment. Emily likes playing games during questioning, he knows that, but he’d really rather she wouldn't be like that today.
Iris's lips parted. They stayed like that, staring at each other in stunned silence for quite some time until Spencer cleared his throat.
“I didn't think I needed one,” Iris confessed. “I'm— I'm telling you the truth.”
“Then how come you haven't mentioned anything about Mark's extracurricular activities?”
Two pictures were placed in front of her. Then two more.
Iris clenched her hands and unclenched them several times.
“Do you know what this is, Iris?”
“Emily,” Spencer said quietly, a warning, carefully watching Iris’ reaction. She didn't know. She didn't know any of this.
“Were you aware that your fiancee was having an affair with one of your students?” Emily pointed at a picture of a red-haired girl and a dirty blonde guy too close to be friends. Those images weren't blurred, on the contrary, the resolution was so fucking good that Iris wanted to burn her eyes out. “Did those study group sessions last a whole night sometimes?”
Iris shook her head, standing up from the chair at once as she started pacing through the room.
“How many times has he lied to you, Iris?” Emily carried on, ignoring Spencer's nagging at her side. “How many times did he say he was somewhere when he actually wasn't?”
“You can stop.” Iris snapped, rubbing her eyes harshly as she tried to get a grip on herself. She couldn't. Not right now. She needed to get out. The room was too small and closed for her liking. “You think I'm trying to defend him?” She turned towards the BAU Agent with an edge to her tone. Iris didn't know whether she wanted to cry or scream. “I'm not. I have no reason to. This— What does this have anything to do with the blood on my fucking apartment door? You think my ex-fiance's infidelity is connected to someone who's threatening me? Or, better yet! To the mass poisoning that I thought is what you were here for. Why on earth are you asking me about Mark of all people?”
“We think he might have a connection to Fabian and Meredith.”
Both spun around to look at Spencer, who walked right into the line of fire. He was extremely uncomfortable with the tension rising each second, but he wasn't so sure it was wise to interrupt it. Emily was the one giving him a warning look now.
She's not responsible for any of this. He tried to tell her with his eyes. He knew it from the start. Call it a gut feeling, but his intuition was 95% of the time correct, he wouldn't stop trusting his judgment now.
Iris Valencia was innocent and he would make sure to dig out anything that proved that.
“Reid.”
“He may be targeting you and using the situation as a cover-up—”
“Reid,” Emily insisted in exasperation just as someone barged into the room.
A woman with long blonde hair held the door open, glaring at both of the Agents as Iris gave her a dumbstruck look. “Not another word, Iris.”
“And who are you?” Emily straightened herself, eyes narrowing at the intruder interrupting their questioning.
“Imogen Dawson.” The woman responded, crossing her arms. She was impatiently waiting for Iris to follow her, but she was stuck in the same corner of the room as if she had seen a ghost. “Iris's lawyer. She's coming with me."
Emily's brows shot up in recognition. She glanced at Spencer from the corner of her eye, mouthing "Dawson?"

Event: Edgar Birthday Countdown 2021
Pairing: Edgar x Iris
A/N: Keeping the oc train going and writing some of the first oc I made for Edgar. Just a lot of fluff. Today was Edgar’s birthday but I’m going to continue to roll out the remainder of the Edgar fics I planned.
Tumblr media
Morning had nearly passed. Sunlight peeked through the drawn curtains, attempting to wake the pair still tangled together beneath the sheets. They’d been greeted by the hue of orange and yellow as the sun first rose, exhausted, sweaty, and incredibly satisfied. It wasn’t until morning had come that sleep found them.
Iris gingerly brushed her fingers through his soft chestnut locks, careful not to wake him. His arm loosely thrown over her waist, cheek resting against her chest. Edgar appeared much more boyish when asleep, something that she very much liked about him. “We can’t sleep all day. You’re the one who has plans, ones you refuse to tell me about.”
He did love his secrets. This one made him incredibly giddy.
“But I’m so comfortable,” Edgar muttered, tightening his hold on her, smooshing his face between her breasts. He’d love nothing more than to stay here for the remainder of his birthday, but he had a gift to give her. He was much too impatient, anticipating how she’d react.
“I’ll make some tea.” Iris pushed her palm against his head to shove the Jack of Hearts off her. Slipping out of the warm sheets, she found the nearest item of clothing on the floor, his signature pale yellow button up. “Are you going to tell me what it is you’re hiding?”
Edgar propped himself up on his elbow, gaze focused on the hem of his shirt brushing against her soft thighs. He struggled to make a choice on which he preferred. She did look quite appetizing in his shirt. “Telling you would take all the fun out of the surprise. I can’t possibly ruin it.”
A typical answer.
A specialty tea made by the best tea shop in Cradle had been gifted to Edgar by one of his subordinates, anonymously, of course. He always got nameless gifts on holidays, including his birthday. Iris returned to the comfort of the bed, giving him a steaming cup. “It’s your birthday. You aren’t supposed to be giving me anything.”
“It’s for the both of us.”
Her subtle attempt to get any information failed. It irritated her as he hid his grin behind his teacup, having easily seen through her tactic. He was the master of keeping secrets. It would take much more coercing to get him to spill. Iris hardly wanted to put in that effort.
After all, he loved surprising her, and today of all days, she could let him have his fun without fighting him.
“I’m not opposed to you wearing only this.” Edgar traced his fingers up her exposed thigh, under the hem of the shirt, and down again. The thought of anyone else seeing her in this didn’t sit well with him, but he was sure that he could find a way to sneak her out.
Alone in the carriage.
It would be a long ride.
Iris promptly ended his little daydream when she smacked his hand. “Pervert. Get dressed so we can go.” She was intrigued to know what he’d been hiding. Edgar was impressively good at gifts and finding the perfect thing to make her happy.
But the longer they rode in the carriage, the more anxious she became. He’d drawn the little curtains over the windows, telling her that she wasn’t allowed to peek. Whatever it was, it must be significant. Flowers, a special date location, even an overnight trip to the hot springs, none of those things warranted such secrecy.
“What did you do?”
Edgar tilted his head, feigning innocence. He was absolutely loving watching her attempt to puzzle out what he’d been planning, but he was confident that the right answer would never come to her. “Why must you assume I’ve done something?”
“Because you have that look, the one that says you’ve done something that you probably shouldn’t have. Like a child.” Her words only fueled the grin on his lips to grow wider. She was well aware that he was having the time of his life.
He wiggled her index finger at her. “A child couldn’t have done this, only me.”
The carriage rolled to a stop, arriving at their destination at last. Edgar offered his hand to her, unable to stop smiling. This was a big gesture. He wanted to believe that she’d be overjoyed, but a very small part of him believed that he may have made a tiny little mistake.
He simply ignored that part of him.
Iris, on the other hand, was staring in absolute shock at the manor, completely restored, right before her. The last time she’d set foot in this place was over four years ago, and it should be covered in ivy and rotting from the inside out.
Her family home. The once esteemed Adley Household. Abandoned after their fall from grace. After her brother disappeared, forgoing his position as the Ten of Hearts, her parents scattered, and Iris couldn’t be alone in that big house after the staff left.
“I-” Iris was not often at a loss for words but describing the overflow of emotions welling up in her chest wasn’t possible. She loved this home; all the memories of her childhood were good and happy. Having to leave it was heartbreaking. “Why?”
Edgar hugged her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder. He’d concluded that it had been a good choice to invest in the home, spending an exorbitant amount of money and hiring a myriad of workers to make this possible in the short time frame. “One day, we’ll need a place to call our home. I don’t have any intention of returning to my own.”
Drenched in blood and secrets. Dark and gloomy. All the worst things wrapped up in a single mansion. If he never returned it, it would be too soon.
“I thought perhaps we’d take up residence here. I hired Rick to oversee all the renovations, but we can create an entire new place all our own. If you want that-”
Iris turned around, cutting off his speech with a kiss. She wasn’t the type of person to get overly emotional, only when it came to him. He found the parts of that she didn’t know existed anymore. “I love you.”
“Ah, that’s what I wanted to hear. Come on.” Edgar had lifted her up in his arms before she could escape his grasp. It was a tradition for newlyweds, but it felt like the appropriate thing to do. “We’ll have to take more days off to come here. It is our home now.”
“You just want an excuse to be away from the thin walls of headquarters,” Iris answered, shaking her head but a smile on her lips. He never ceased to make her happier than the day before.
The house was a promise.
The promise of forever.

This is a great read full of receipts and absolutely damning about not just Carina but how complicit others are in this situation. It is telling how little interest the two recappers have in watching S3.

Event: Edgar Birthday Countdown
Pairing: Iris x Edgar
A/N: plumpblueberry requested this from the Touches Event that is still open! I thought it worked well for a sweet fic for Edgar! Yes, I know his birthday has long passed but I’m finishing these fics dammit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Everyone, please keep moving inward! Down to the designated disaster rooms!”
Central Quarter had spiraled into chaos as the worst storm Cradle had witnessed in years barreled into the plaza. Both armies were surprised by the severity. The storm whisked in from the sea, giving little time for preparation to safely get citizens inside. Violent winds howled through the streets, its battle cry a prelude to its tantrum, thrashing all that was in its path.
Iris used her entire body to hold one door open against the brutal wind. “Edgar, that’s enough. Get inside, both of you!” Her call fell on deaf ears. The Jack struggled with the elderly vendor to secure his stall closed in hopes of protecting the precious contents. Blue irises surveyed the near empty plaza. Only a few soldiers remained, shuffling the last of the citizens indoors.
“Ma’am! There are some unsatisfied with our orders to remain inside instead of patrolling for stragglers.” One of her own approached, a little meek but his gaze shifted to the huddle of Black Army soldiers eyeing her with irritation. The same group she’d reprimanded not so long ago for questioning her orders.
“No. I’ve already dismissed that misguided action. What good will you be to Cradle if you end up injured along with them? Shelter in place until the storm has lessened, that way we can be of use to those who are injured or trapped.” Her words echoed across the lobby with force. The unforgiving storm would make a wannabe hero into a victim. “Instead of standing around like a bunch of gossiping socialites, get those people into the designated shelter rooms.”
With a disgusted expression, the young soldier said, “All due respect, Ten of Hearts,” her title dripping with derision from his tongue, “The personal with the spare keys for the second sub-floor rooms never arrived. They’re locked.” As if that fact made him the superior in the situation.
“Break the damn thing open? Or do you need me to teach you how to do that as well?”
The soldier beside her snickered at the Black Army’s soldiers' crumpled expressions. “I’ll see it done, ma’am.” He saluted, lips still pulling into an amused grin. He’d been assigned to her unit not long ago but had found it to be to his liking.
Her attention returned to her superior. The wind whipped through his brown locks. Edgar tugged the rope hard, fighting the flapping doors closed and securing them with expertise. Only a few drops hit the pavement before sheets of rain poured from the dark clouds. It’s roar joining that of the wind. But she caught a broken cry.
Iris thought she may have imagined it, but she couldn’t go in without a quick survey of the area.
Vision was incredibly low as she ignored her own orders in search of what she thought to be a lost child. They must be close if she could hear it over the storm. Her surroundings lit up with a streak of crystal lightning, and the thunder that followed shook the ground beneath her feet. The storm showed its strength, challenging the earth to stand against it.
Iris rounded the corner of the civic center, uniform utterly soaked. Blue irises squinted, lashes dripping with the water, hazing her vision. “Is anyone-”
Another rattling boom brought a shriek with it. The woman crouched down, peering into a patch of bushes by the side of the building. Deep within, she found a boy no older than five cowering within, clutching a plush toy as his lifeline. “You can come out now. I’ll get you inside.” She offered her hand, chilled rain pelting against her skin.
Pop. Pop.
“Mama says I’m not supposed to go with strangers.”
“That’s very good advice, but I’m sure your mama also told you that you can trust army soldiers, isn’t that right?” She tugged at her soaked white uniform. “I’m Iris, the Ten of Hearts. So come on out-”
His little head shook, nose crinkling. “The Red Army doesn’t allow women to join them. You’re a liar.”
Iris began to remember why she had a dislike for children. They were mouthy, and fickle. They didn’t listen, even when in imminent danger. Her knees sank into the muddy grass as she leaned forward to attempt to grab him. “That’s an old rule. King Lancelot made some recent changes. We have to get inside, come out from there!”
Her fingers grazed his tiny arm, almost reaching him.
“Iris!”
CRACK.
A body tackled against hers with enough force to knock the wind out of her. It was a blur. The world disappeared for a moment, leaving her disoriented. Blinking slowly, she found herself pressed against the ground, leaves of the now uprooted tree tickling against her cheek. The large branch that the smaller one nearly broke off rested against the back of her superior, who’d shielded her from being hit.
“Edgar?” She struggled to move any part of her body, pinned beneath his body. Even though the brunt had been borne by the Jack of Hearts, she could feel herself aching already.
Edgar groaned, shifting his weight to allow her space to slip out. “Thank goodness I made it.” He coughed, blood droplets splattering onto the muddy ground. He peeled himself up, staggering but able to stand. He tested his limbs, nothing seemed to be broken. They were lucky to have only been impacted by that one branch.
She resisted every urge within to check his wounds. Turning back to the bushes, also missed by the uprooted tree, Iris sighed with relief. “Will you come inside with us now?”
The boy had no issue trusting her after the fright he’d been given. The two returned the boy to his grateful mother before going to the infirmary on the main floor at Iris’s request. A locked door gave them absolute privacy. Nothing quite so nefarious or naughty as Edgar might have usually teased. Their uniforms unwearable, lest they wish to catch a cold.
“Sit down, and stop staring at me,” Iris chastised, clad in only her wet undergarments. She scanned the shelves for what she'd need to treat him. Perhaps it would be advantageous to learn a little more first aid.
"I'm positive I can wait until the storm passes." Edgar leaned against the arm of the couch.
Iris signed, hearing what he was insinuating. Of her many areas of expertise, first aid was not one of them. "Do you not trust me?" The question not a serious one. She conceded and abandoned the shelf to return to the warm fire.
Edgar winced, but reached out to grab her, tugging her into his arms. "It's cute when you pout.” His signature grin only graced his lips for a fleeting moment, crumbling into a frown. His cold fingers brushed her warm cheek, careful not to touch the wound lest he hurt her. "You've been hurt."
"It's a scratch. You're the one who got crushed by a tree branch. Probably a broken rib or two." The bruises already forming on his muscular abdomen. She should wrap them but lacked the knowledge to do so. “You’re an idiot.”
“I love you too, Iris.” His features still expressed concern. If he’d been a little faster, if he’d done more to protect her, then she wouldn’t be injured at all. Jade irises focused on the cut, as if he could will the wound to close.
Despite his grunt of pain, he was delighted the moment her lips met his. He pulled her in closer with a gentle jerk, catching her off guard. The two fell back onto the soft cushions of the couch. It was so adorable how hard she tried to hide her feelings.
“Are you trying to hurt yourself further?” Iris couldn’t break free of his hold. Her body weight had to be hurting him. It was irritating that he tended to do as he pleased at all times, but it always made her heart flip in her chest. Besides, who could resist that sweet smile?
“No, I do believe I’m distracting myself from the pain. The only real medicine is touching you.”
Silver tongue.
As if to prove his point, Edgar gingerly traced his fingers up and down her spine, humming to himself. He never tired of feeling her soft skin beneath the pads of his fingertips. She had incredible fighting skill, amazing strength, and yet, she remained oh so soft.
“You’re so unreasonable. We’re on duty.”
“Ah, but I’m not the one thinking naughty thoughts.”
Iris shook her head, smacking her hand against his shoulder as punishment, receiving a grunt from him. “I’ll go check on the soldiers upstairs then-” He was always thinking indecent things.
But Edgar tutted at her, managing to catch her again before she’d completely escaped. It didn’t feel so great moving so quickly, but it was nothing compared to what he’d feel if she left him right now. “Who said you could leave me? I’m injured, remember?”
He sounded much like a wounded puppy begging for its owner to pay attention to it.
“I guess I can stay a little longer.” Iris caved, her back flush against his chest. The fire did warm her cold body, and she did have a weak spot for this puppy side of him, especially with the way he snuggled against her, resting his chin on her shoulder.
Edgar gave her a little squeeze, absently tracing patterns over her stomach. He’d love nothing more than to wind her up, excite her, but the pain did inhibit his ability to do so. Instead, the Jack of Hearts was content simply holding her in his arms while they waited out the storm.

Ch. 6
Characters: Edgar Bright, Iris Adley, Sean
Pairing: Edgar x Iris
Tagging: @plumpblueberry
Tumblr media
“You can’t blame them for being curious. No one knows what Sir Edgar is having you do as his second,” Sean said, lounging back on the perfectly made bed. He and all the others that were under the Jack of Hearts were hovering around me, asking an infinite amount of questions about the allusive and mysterious Edgar Bright…ever since he appointed me as his second.
I buttoned up my uniform shirt with visible annoyance. “I’m basically a glorified secretary, organizing documents, keeping notes about important dates and meetings, and pretending to be him when penning letters that he finds too boring while he sits on the sofa sipping tea.”
It wasn’t that he didn’t work. Soldiers came and went all day long with reports and documents. When he wasn’t in his quarters, he was in meetings with Jonah and Lancelot or officials in Central Quarter, on top of training his own troop of soldiers with a warm smile and steel fist. And yet, when we were alone, he turned into a candy gobbling child that enjoyed causing me a headache.
“Aren’t you tired? You don’t return from your duties until the early morning hours and then turn around and be up at first call at 7 like the rest of us.” He was just as intrigued by my new position as the others, but for more reasons. Every day he asked if we’d spoken about my predicament and the answer remained a stern no.
“Tired of his ridiculously idiot game? Yes.”
“Aw, that’s no way to speak about your adoring superior.”
The only slightly peaceful part of my day came crashing down at the presence of the Jack of Hearts. He’d let himself into the room without any warning, apparently a recurring trait of his. I can’t exactly complain, outwardly at least.
I rested against the bed to slip on my boots, tugging the laces extra tight while imaging the thin string to be around his neck. The whispers from the hallway not so quiet, nearly bringing a large commotion to the barrack hallway. “I’ll assume you’re here for business, sir.”
“Sean, you will be in Central Quarter today.” Edgar gave the order with a hint of edge to his voice. He received a salute and Sean scuttled off to leave us. One quick glance over his shoulder and the rest of the soldiers scattered before those mischievous jade irises were turned on me. “You will be accompanying to patrol the forest. Won’t that be fun, Iris?”
“Are you going to insist on calling me that when we’re alone?”
“It is your name. Besides, the expressions you make are worth any risk.”
I swiped my hat from the rack, settling it on my blonde locks, adjusting it with stiff movements. I made a silent vow to work on how I outwardly reacted to his taunts, if only to irritate him a fraction of how he irritated him.
Outside of his personal unit, the soldiers continued to treat me like an outsider. They glared when they thought none of the ranking officers were watching. They whispered in ear shot of me, insisting on being petty about my sudden rise in position. Only the ones within Edgar’s unit had begun to accept me, at least enough to not avoid me during meals and free time.
The leaves crunched beneath his boots, the Jack of Hearts strolling with a spring his step. His good mood almost contagious. It was strange, simultaneously keeping up my guard while also lowering it at times around him. He hadn’t broken his word and exposed my secret. “Iris, lost in thought, are we? I do hope it’s me on your mind.”
Jade irises mischievously reflecting my own clear, blue ones. Edgar’s face mere inches.
I took a step back only to hit a tree. The pain dull but grounded me back in reality.
Quick to close the distance, like a wild cat slinking up to its cornered prey, Edgar’s grin grew wider. “You make a pretty boy, but I prefer the real Iris.” Gloved fingers expertly removing the earring and pocketing it in seconds. “I’ll hold onto this until it’s time to return.”
Without the magic, nothing hid the fact that I was a woman. It would be unlikely for the army to send multiple soldiers on this patrol, but not unheard of. And yet, winning an argument with a rock was more attainable than reasoning with the gentle demon.
The forest was peaceful. Although not many ventured in due to the rumors surrounding it, bandits tended to gather on occasion. The town was abuzz with talk of some unsavory types moving between Central Quarter and the Forbidden Forest. Edgar had been tasked with uncovering and eliminating them.
“I did some digging, but there’s no record of where your brother disappeared to. Not even your parents have any inkling. I suspect that you have some idea.” He broke the silence as he adjusted his gait to fall in step with me.
“I don’t. He never told me where he was going. Only that the girl he’d fallen obsessively in love with was the reason he wouldn’t take his position in the army.” The night he’d left still seared freshly in my mind. It made little sense. He had been handed the fourth highest rank in the Red Army and he abandoned it for a woman.
Edgar hummed in response, gaze lifting to the treetops above us. “Peculiar, but I hear that love makes one do crazy things.”
“He’s an absolute fool. Love is an abstract idea that is fleeting. He barely knew her, and yet he threw away his whole life, making a traitor of himself, of our family. For what?” He’d said that he might be gone for a while, years. At that time, it would be much too late. Our family would be ostracized, the position given by birthright erased and passed on to some distant blood relative.
“You’ve never been in love, have you, Iris?”
I gave him a disgusted glare before replying, “No. I’ll wager you haven’t either.”
He snickered from behind his palm, not making any attempts to avoid my slap to his arm. “You’re right. I’ve little time for dalliances with women. I have been approached, but taking a wife is not of importance to me.” For a second, the facade slipped, and I saw the flash of melancholy cross his features. Then it was gone, replaced with that empty smile. “I imagine you’ve had plenty of men throwing themselves at you.”
“You mean at my father.” I shivered in absolute revulsion. None of them had approached me directly. Whispers of how I could be harsh and hard to please were always circling me like rampant sharks. Negotiations went through my father, and I never accepted a single one. “I have no desire to be someone’s wife.”
“You’d rather be a solider?”
There was no judgement or ridicule in his question, as it had been with all the men previous in my life. Any time I trained with a sword or learned hand to hand combat, they all had a similar tone. It’s not for a woman. I would prove them all wrong. “Yes. Only the Red Army has rules against women joining. It seems obvious that after 500 years, perhaps a different perspective might be advantageous.”
“War is not made for the weak.”
“Weak and female are not synonymous.”
Jade eyes crinkled as he smiled at me. “Oh, I’m well aware of your strengths, Iris. And I, for one, have no qualms with you being in the army. It’s not simply a matter of changing laws.”
The politics. It’s always about the politics among the Red elites.
The scent of smoke drifted through the trees, silencing our discussion. The rumors were proving to be true. We both became silent, like ghosts leaving no trace of their existence as we neared the campsite. Only one man guarded the camp.
“We’ll wait until nightfall, and all of them are to be captured.” His whisper carried the weight of his position. The teasing superior vanished without a trace, replaced with the Jack of Hearts giving his soldier an unbreakable order. His gaze only flickered to me long enough to see my nod before returning to our targets.
They came and went, five of them in total. As the sun began to slide beyond the horizon. Once the light faded, the group all gathered around the fire, clinking dirty glasses of stolen booze, and rifling through their treasures. Edgar gave a signal, directing me to circle to the other side.
Blending in with the darkness was easy. The moon cast slivers of silver light between the leaves rustling in the wind. I crouched by a thick bush, waiting patiently for our moment to attack. I hadn’t, however, expected him to announce himself.
“Good evening, gentlemen.” Edgar startled the whole lot of them, hand lightly gripping the hilt of his sword. The fire crackled as one choked on his drink at the sudden appearance of the officer. “You’ve caused quite the ruckus in town. It’s time to answer for your crimes.”
Swords and knives were drawn, all eyes focused solely on the single man in the crisp white uniform. Their bravery coupled with cowardice as they collectively moved the opposite direction with slow steps, save for their so-called leader. He alone faced the gentle demon with a scowl.
He gave a howl and lunged at Edgar, only to grab air and lose his breath as his torso connected with the Jack of Heart’s knee.
Tension rose through the campsite. Some were frozen in their spot, watching the imminent defeat of their boss. But one... there’s always one, who decides to save themselves and run.
Unlucky for him.
The wheeze that passed his lips when I wrenched my elbow back into his throat divided the attention. He collapsed to the dirt, body curling up as he clutched his neck and struggled to catch his breath. “How pathetic,” I said, drawing my own sword from its sheath.
There’s two of them?
Who cares! Just take them out and let’s get out of here!
They were barely worth any effort. Their form sloppy and no coordination between them. Although it hadn’t been too long since being under Edgar’s guidance, I had picked up on some quirks of his. In the beginning, the soldiers in the unit avoided me, leaving Edgar to spar with me most of the time. I’d learned his movements quite well.
“I’m impressed. You’ve done so well,” Edgar praised with a pat on my shoulder. He chuckled as I brushed it off.
I finished the knot on the last rope, creating a line of prisoners so they couldn’t try to escape. “I didn’t ask for your evaluation.”
“But that’s my job. Your hand to hand could use a little work. I’d be happy to teach you.” His eager grin disappeared at the voice of the leader of the bandits. I hadn’t witnessed the demon side of him until now.
Since when did the Red Army employ women?
I turned away, remembering that he still had my earring and no magic had shielded my features. Edgar slipped it into my palm without a word before slinking up to the angered prisoner.
“He is quite pretty for a boy, I’ll admit. You’d do well to keep your mouth shut.” The malice laced in his words paired perfectly with the dagger pressed a little too hard against his prey’s throat. His threat received with a silent nod.
I trailed behind, lost deeply in thought. It hadn’t been necessary. There was no reason for him to say anything. No one would have believed the word of a criminal over the Jack. There’s no logical reasoning behind why Edgar had protected me, nor why I can’t simply say thank you and move on.
My cheeks were unbearably hot.
Why did he confuse me so much?

Ch. 5
Pairing: Iris x Edgar
A/N: This was supposed to come out in December but I failed miserably. Iris is one of my favorites to write. She was my first Ikerev OC and I cannot believe it took me so long to update this XD Enjoy some Iris and Edgar!
Tumblr media
Time passed quickly. Sweltering heat cooling off into chilly temperatures. Leaves turning from lush green to brilliant shades of red and orange. As the season changed, the animosity towards me began to fade away. I was just another soldier.
Training became second nature, but I consistently found myself growing bored with it. Unlike the others under the Jack of hearts command, I had a higher goal than simply being in the army, and that was to take my rightful place as the ten of Hearts, regardless of their rules on women.
Until then, the only place I could truly relax was my quarters. Even here in the barracks bathroom, taking a bath brought stress to me. The doors don’t lock. The men crass enough to walk in on each other and laugh. When the hour grew late and Sean stood guard outside, I had to rush to stay unnoticed by the other soldiers.
It had been some time since I’d actually soaked in a bath. Perhaps once I had my quarters in the main building...
Swiping my hand across the mirror to catch a glimpse of my reflection, one of the only times I got to see my real face without magic, I gave a long sigh. What I wouldn’t give for better soap and some moisturizer. “It’ll be worth it.”
“What will be worth it?”
Through the mirror, I could clearly see those jade green eyes gleaming with exhilaration at the discovery he’d made. Blaming Sean would be ridiculous. He couldn’t turn away the third highest ranking officer. It wouldn’t have ended well for him. “Haven’t you ever heard of knocking?”
“Consider this a surprise inspection,” Edgar replied, gaze falling down to my body clad only in a towel. His lips tugged up into an amused smirk. “This is quite the curious situation, isn’t it?”
No more a secret that I’m a woman, not man. Without the crystals to hide my feminine features or the wrapping around my torso, that much was clear. “What are you even doing in here?” Something had brought him here, and it wouldn’t hurt to ask. I’d soon be thrown out or arrested. Impersonating a soldier would yield a harsh punishment.
Edgar leaned back against the wall, humming softly to himself. “It’s my duty to inquire about strange occurrences and you, dear Iris, have been a strange occurrence since the moment you arrived. Am I correct to assume you’re Iris Adley, Ian’s sister?” The question rhetorical. He’d likely done research on my family.
“Don’t ask questions you already know the answer to. Your games don’t amuse me, Edgar,” I replied with a frown. What’s he waiting for? He could drag me to Lancelot’s office and turn me in. He could arrest me himself, lock me in the dungeon. So why is he just standing there?
Silence lingered between us, waiting for the other to make the first move. Drops from my wet hair fell down onto my bare skin, rolling down between the swell of my chest and disappearing beneath the towel. The steam from the hot bath beginning to settle in his brown locks as well.
Edgar lifted his hand to brush it back, leaving it messier than usual. “This is quite the predicament. Allow me a chat over tea in my chambers.” An invitation posed as a command, as my superior officer. His gaze pierced into me, like he could read my hesitation. “I promise to be nice.”
That is not my main problem, but he knew that. He’s messing with me. I narrowed my eyes. It would be a pain to resist and have him use force that would result in a fight and ultimately end up with me arrested for either murder or my original crime of impersonating my brother. That doesn’t mean I want to. “I don’t know if you have a nice bone in your body, Edgar.”
“Ah, you wound me, Iris. I’m not going to spill your secret,” he replied, flashing a charming smile. One that said, not yet, at least. Of what use it would be to him...
Darkness fell over us, signaling lights out as the crystals in their fixtures went out. The small window fixed up high in the bathroom left a strip of moonlight illuminating the Jack of Hearts with an otherworldly glow. Perhaps he was a demon after all, I had yet to determine that. “I don’t have much of a choice, as you’re blackmailing me.”
Edgar chuckled, jade eyes glinting in the light. “Blackmail? I have no need to blackmail you. You see, I admire your resolve. You may have failed in the eyes of all the other officers in your fight with my dear protege, but I was undoubtedly impressed. Why would I have taken you on in my unit if I hadn’t found you most intriguing?”
Looking back now, it must be even more admirable that I made a draw of the spar with Zero. “You were ridiculously bored and wanted a new puzzle to solve.” Rumors of him circulated through the barracks often, especially through his unit. Highly respected for his skills but known to be eccentric and unusual.
“I haven’t solved you yet, have I?” Edgar tilted his head, sliding his tongue over his lips in anticipation of unlocking more secrets from me. He had been incredibly bored until this.
I slid my pants on under the towel, letting them hang loosely around my hips. “Maybe you never will.” The shirt stuck to my skin as I slipped my arms in and began to button the first few. Once decently covered, the towel pulled away and crumpled on the floor. The last few buttons easily done.
“I do so enjoy a challenge.”
Throwing an irritated glare at him, I swiped my earrings and wrap from the counter. The halls were empty, all in their rooms like good little soldiers. Sean had even disappeared, dismissed by Edgar. Should anyone else see us, it would be over.
Our steps silent, moving nearly in sync down the carpeted hallway of the main building. Passing the ten of hearts personal chambers, empty of its rightful occupant, I took a quiet breath. If he didn’t tell my secret, then it’s still in the cards for me.
The door closed with a resounding thud, followed by the click of the heavy lock turning. None could disturb without prior warning. Edgar motioned to the sitting area, moving to the cabinet to retrieve a tea set. With the use of magic crystals, heating the water an easy task. “Pumpkin tea is very popular in Central Quarter right now. I’m delighted to have someone to share it with.”
I sat in the chair to keep the distance between us. No matter where he chose to sit, it would be a good length away. “What is it that you want from me?” His motive unclear, and I would get a real answer out of him before I left.
“You excel at every turn. Tactical, strategy, swordplay, hand to hand. More so than any I’ve had the pleasure of training. It’s almost as if you don’t even need me.” Edgar elegantly poured the steaming tea into a delicate cup, not a single drop spilling, as if showing off his own skills.
“That’s not true. I haven’t beaten you in a sword fight yet,” I answered with a shrug. His skill shined through with how he wielded a sword. Since watching him, I’d adjusted how I held my sword, finding the perfect balance to have as graceful and clean a swing as him.
Edgar sat on the couch nearest me, holding his teacup up but never taking a sip from it. “I’ll wager you’d put up a better fight as Iris rather than Ian. You hold back. At first, I imagined it was due to fear of failing, but the more I watched you, the more purposeful I found your movements. Precision to keep from winning against your opponent.”
He’d been watching me that closely?
“Ian has never been good at swordplay. He sucks at literally everything, even the poetry he desperately tried to win that idiot girl’s heart with.” If he’d had even an ounce of skill, I could have already worked my way up to being at least half as good as I am. The sweet steam of the tea wafted up from the cup. “Sean knew my brother well enough to tell a difference, so I had to be extra careful. Apparently, not careful enough.” A frustrating thought. My brows pulled together in anger.
Edgar took a long sip of the tea, happily satisfied with sweetness. “You’ve got the entire army fooled. I’ve even heard Jonah speaking a little praise of how well you adjusted and your skill.”
I studied his features, not a hint of his true intentions showing. That rumor stood true. None could fool the Jack of Hearts but gleaning his real self a near impossible feat. “If you aren’t going to expose me, then what is it that you want? People don’t keep secrets without a reason.”
“It’s simple. I want to see how long you can keep up this charade and what will happen once you’re found out. I can make predictions, but nothing will be as satisfying as observing it unfold.” No lies were laced in those words. Edgar found this a game, one that he could cure his own boredom.
The teacup hit the saucer with a loud clink. I stood from the chair, brushing my damp hair back. “It’s late. Unless you have any more questions, I’m returning to the barracks.” Not waiting for a response, I crossed the room to the door. Casting a glance over my shoulder, I narrowed my eyes. “I don’t trust you.”
Edgar laughed, rising gracefully from his seat. Pulling the key from his pocket, he unlocked the door for me to leave. “One last thing, you’ll be starting as my apprentice effective immediately. Outside of unit training, you’ll spend all your time at my side.” He was enjoying this a little too much, knowing that I couldn’t say no.
“Better watch out, or I’ll end up punching you one day.” The perks of being an apprentice were incredibly clear. It would jump start my knowledge on how the inner workings of the Chosen Thirteen operated. It seemed as though he was helping me. For what it gained him, I couldn’t puzzle out yet.
“I’d love for you to try, Iris.”
With the door opened, I slipped out into the hallway after checking for any guards. Returning to the barracks uncaught would prove easy. Even as I walked away, his gaze never left me. Sleep would be near impossible. The thoughts swirling around in my head.
What could Edgar Bright really gain from having me as his apprentice? Was it a spur of the moment decision to keep me close? Being that close to him would put me under the scrutiny of King Lancelot and Queen Jonah. If either discovered my secret, it would be game over. That was not an option. Whatever game Edgar desired to play; I would be the victor.

Spooktober Day 13: Hunted in the Woods
You can find my masterlist in my bio!
More Ikerev Spooky fun with my first ever Ikerev OC Iris! Tagging @plumpblueberry
Tumblr media
The season only amplified the ominous air sweeping through the country. A thick fog rolling in along with the full moon shining down into its depths making one’s sight less reliable. Shadows distorted and bringing illusions to the forest around, leaving most soldiers uncomfortable and on edge.
Iris could feel her heart pounding, adrenaline high with the unfavorable weather for a late patrol in the forest in Red Territory. She thrived at night, as did the rest of her personal squad. When her eyes could not be trusted, she focused fully on her other senses.
The crunching of leaves and twigs, a deer stalking through the trees with caution. The wind caressing the bare branches to create an eerie melody to accompany the soldier.
It was the sound that she didn’t hear. Steps as silent as the fog that swirled around her form.
Two days had passed since her superior had left headquarters, carrying out orders that were more secret than she’d been allowed to know. Her head tilted to the side, blue eyes following the figure moving through the forest as a ghost.
Her tongue slid across her lips, hungering for a decent chase.
Abandoned was her patrol, swiftly changing the course to follow after him. Both their presences masked by their learned ability to take steps that were unheard. No animals would scatter. No nefarious or suspicious persons about would be aware of either.
The distance between them closed with each purposeful step she took. Pure delight tingled through her body when his head turned, jade eyes sweeping across his surroundings, sensing but not able to locate her.
A matching smirk tugged at his lips. "Well, it seems I've become a little lamb." Edgar spoke without a hint of worry. Though unclear on the who, he'd discovered someone wanted to play a game with him.
Iris bit back a laugh. How dramatic her superior could be. Yet, the invitation to play on equal footing only fueled the flames.
The fog hid their figures, whisking around after one had passed leaving only the remnants to follow. Trees large enough to hide safely behind their trunks. Deeper into the depths of the forests grasp they went, one missing the other, like a silent hand reaching out and grasping air.
The tingle of exhilaration. Breaths bated, visible in the chilled air.
The edge of the forest came into view, opening into a large field bathed in the moonlight. An excellent opportunity for the chaser to make her move. Body bent at her waist, raised on the balls of her feet, Iris rushed forward.
Edgar turned in perfect time, easily bracing for the impact of her against him. Smooth gloved hands caught her wrists. “I believe we can call this a tie, although, I’ve caught you-”
Without much thought, Iris hooked her heel against his. In a quick motion, she’d successfully knocked him off balance and flat on his back against the grass. Her head fell to the side with a wicked grin. “Now I’ve won.”
For a moment, the wind whistled around uninterrupted. The Jack of Hearts let out a breath laugh, hand brushing through his messy brown locks. “I concede, Iris. You caught me.” No hint of annoyance in his tone, only pride at having such a capable partner.
Edgar started to sit upright, only to be stopped. Iris sunk down to her knees, straddling over his hips. Her fingers wrapped around his wrists, pressing them down into the soft grass to keep him there. Blue eyes gazed down into jade ones as her lips brushed against his. “I get to collect my prize.”
“And what prize would that be?”
Iris traced her tongue over her lips. “Isn’t it obvious?” Her fingers traced down his arms, over his shoulders and down to his chest, popping the buttons of his uniform jacket. “It’s you. So be good for me.”
Their game not yet coming to a close. Heated kisses turning into honey moans paired with teasing words from both. The pair spending an intimate night under the sparkling stars.

You thought I was done? Ha! I'm only getting started! ♡( ̄З ̄) Iris x Edgar "I'm not arguing, I'm simply explaining why I'm right" (>ω^)
So much for a drabble. This turned into a full fic. I apologize for nothing. Enjoy some badass Iris
Tumblr media
The pair were locked in a stare, an unrelenting battle between the two officers in the Red Army. The lower ranked one stood behind the prisoner tied to the chair, leaning her arms against the top rail of it. “You just love to play devil’s advocate, don’t you?”
Jade eyes sparkled as brightly as the smile on his lips. “That isn’t my intention at all.”
Iris resisted the matching smirk begging to meet the Jack of Heart’s. The two had been down in the dungeon of the headquarters for over three hours, Edgar there to observe the newest member of the Chosen 13 interrogate a potential serial killer.
He admired the way she handled herself, but her methods differed from those used by the officers, as typically he handled this job. “Sophisticated killers like this aren’t going to yield to such a mild tactic, Iris. You should really listen to me.” Psychological warfare would not get them far.
“Men always think that violence is the answer.” Her hand patted the top of the man before her, and the woman leaned around to catch his attention. Her eyes flickered to Edgar before she spoke to their suspect. “If it were up to him, you’d be in a world of pain.”
He attempted to pull away, refusing to meet her gaze. His entire body tensed.
There it was. Her theory proven in one single moment.
“Iris-” Her superior called.
She lifted her gaze, annoyance passing over her features. “I don’t want to argue with you, Edgar, so stay out of this.” From the corner of her eyes, she continued to observe. Reactions were everything in this case.
Edgar leaned back against the bars of the cell, his signature smile never leaving his face. “I’m not arguing. I’m simply explaining why I’m right.” He truly wanted to figure out exactly what was going through her head. She’d been aiming for him to fight her every decision, though the reason still lost in the haze. “I’ll give you three more minutes to give real results before I remove you for failing.”
This man had killed eight women, that they knew of. Not a shred of real evidence left at any of the crime scenes. Eye witness reports were unreliable but had led them to this man. Should they fail to get a confession, he would walk out of here and likely commit another crime.
“That’s not your call. King Lancelot asked me to do this.” She stepped back, out of the line of sight of their prisoner. Her blue eyes alight with excitement. This had been the most fun she’d had since returning to the army. Be rough, she mouthed with a wink.
Edgar received the message, the pieces of the puzzle falling into place with that request. Her baiting wasn’t for him at all, but for the man tied to the chair. The one who’d only been watching how he’d reacted to Iris’s taunts. “You should really watch how you address your superior officer.” The smile faded away.
“Is that an order? As the Jack?” Her ridiculing words didn’t match the playful grin on her lips.
“Iris.”
The 10 of Hearts strode closer, hands by her side in fists. “What are you going to do?” She poked her finger against his chest, standing up on the balls of her feet to be eye level. “I’m not some regular soldier that you can pick on anymore. One rank doesn’t make you better than me--“
Edgar seized her arms. In three swift steps, he had slammed her against the wall, caging her in with his body. “One rank is enough. Shall I give you a lesson in respect?”
Iris could hear the heavy breathing, the excitement rushing through the man. She feigned weakness, struggling against Edgar who held her wrists pinned to the rough stone wall. “Sorry about this.”
Her whisper didn’t register to him before she’d effectively kneed him in the stomach. Edgar held back the laugh that nearly escaped. He had surely missed having her around.
Iris patted his shoulder, as if thanking him for being a good sport. Her attention fell fully on the man strapped to the chair. “Oh, I like that expression. Did I ruin your last little fantasy?”
The man had sweat beading on his forehead, his lips pulled down into a frown. In the time that Edgar had her caged against the wall, showing domination over her, the man had been enthralled. Mouth parted, heavy breaths, salivating at the mouth. Living the scene through Edgar. Now, his expression had fallen, like Iris had kicked him in the balls.
“You were a little off, Edgar. You called him sophisticated.” Iris slammed her hands down onto his tied wrists, leaning down to be level with him. He shrunk back, feet digging into the ground as if that would assist in getting away from her. “He’s a coward. I’m not even fully convinced that he committed the crimes. Look at him. He’s terrified of me.”
The chair creaked under his pressure against its back. Eyes downcast, entire body trembling.
“He can’t even look me in the eyes. A sad excuse of a man that is afraid of woman with any kind of power. There’s no way that he killed those seven women. He doesn’t possess the strength, clearly. And god forbid if the woman decided to fight back, even a little, she’d be able get this weakling away without any problems--”
She’d left the Jack of Hearts thoroughly impressed. Not a single injury had been given to the man, yet he broke within seconds.
“Eight!” He whipped his head up, rage glinting behind his eyes. He jerked his arms, attempting to get Iris to let go of him. “Eight! I killed eight women! Get it right!”
“Is that right?”
Her confusion only fueled him, uncontrollably filled with a fire within. He wanted to hurt her, to make her be his next victim. “You’re all pretentious, all you women who think you can take the position that is rightly a male’s!”
“So, you killed them for being better than you?” Iris asked, raising an eyebrow. How easily he had played right into her hand, only proving her statement about him being a coward.
“I killed all of them! Mary Cutshall. Julie Harrison.” He listed the names of all eight women, a snickering laugh after each name. The realization that he’d confessed to it never even crossed his mind.
Iris stood up straight, turning her gaze back on Edgar. “That should suffice as a confession, should it not?”
“I do believe so.”
The two officers left him in that cell, screaming profanities at Iris.
Iris stretched her arms over her head, reveling in the feeling of the sunshine spilling in through the large windows of the hallway. A mission well done, despite the lingering headache from hitting the wall. She’d need to consult the resident doctor for a little pain killer.
“Iris,” Edgar caught her arm before they were to part ways. He should write up a report, and she would be reporting to King Lancelot. His gloved hand rested against her cheek. “Check in with Kyle after you’re done.” At her behest, he’d been rough with her, but the bruises that would surely show on her back would be on his mind for a while.
She cast him a wry smile. “Maybe you should too, tough guy.” Jabbing her fingers against his bruised ribs, she laughed when a hint of wince passed over his features. “I would apologize but I got the confession so I’m not really sorry.”
The Jack of Hearts shook his head, jade eyes trained on her as the woman walked away. “That you did,” he called after her. “You’ll have to explain to me why exactly that worked so well.” The mechanics were easy to understand, she had riled him up in order to get answers. How the man had broken so easily still evaded him.
Iris stopped short of the office, rapping her knuckles against the door. She brushed her hand through her short blonde locks, blue irises turning to him one last time. Her shoulders rose upward.
“Nothing is easier to bruise than a man’s ego.”

Ch. 4
Pairing: Edgar x Iris
Finally updated Iris! My Mulan adaptation for Cradle. Tagging @plumpblueberry even though she’s already read it!
Tumblr media
The whispers about being under the watchful eye of the man they called The Gentle Demon had seemed much more like rumors than truth. Edgar had a presence about him. He gave advice when it was needed, carefully demonstrating the proper techniques with his sword. Nothing that I had experienced beforehand, at the hands of my instructor, a retired Red Army soldier.
All my muscles ached from the full day of training. Though the drills were easy to follow, the repetitive movements had given my entire body a workout. I’d managed to make it the rest of the day without any other incidents. Digging my fingers into my sore shoulder, rolling the tender spot to ease the pain, I sat on the edge of my bed, legs stretched out as far as they could.
The rooms were comfortable, small but spacious enough to fit two beds directly across from each other on the far wall, a coffee table with a small sofa and chair to lounge in when there was time, and a bathroom off the side. It was immaculately clean and sparkling, nothing less than exceptional from the Red Army.
“Excuse me, Ian?” A hesitant voice asked, shutting the door when he entered. He nearly shrank back when my gaze fell on him. A heavier build but lean enough to have made the cut to be in the army. Short, blonde curls atop his head. Pale hazel eyes. My silence drove him to continue. “That was amazing… I mean job with… fighting our ace. My name is Sean McMillan. I’m your roommate.”
Not worth my time. “If you know what’s good for you, you’ll stay away from me.” The other soldiers had shunned me. I’d found a quiet table away from them at the designated dinner time, but their whispers and stares were hard to fully ignore. Imagine how they’d react to know that Ian was actually his little sister Iris.
Sean shook his head, daring to walk closer. “No, I like that about you. Your sword skills are quite impressive. But, I’ve got to ask, Ian. When did you learn?” He posed the question carefully, sinking down onto the bed across from mine. His hands twisted around, a nervous tick.
“What?”
“The Ian I knew, hated swords.”
He knew my brother? Unlikely, as Ian had only a handful of friends. He could be lying but can I really chance that. “And?”
Sean cast a glance at the door, hands wringing together once again. “I’d like an explanation. You’re not Ian, so why are you impersonating him?” He couldn’t meet my gaze, too afraid of the deadly look that he knew would be glaring at him.
“If that’s even true, why would I tell you?”
“I could… just tell our superior officer… I’m sure that Sir Edgar would appreciate my honesty or something-”
My head tilted a few degrees, and I leaned forward. “Are you threatening me?” Who is this spineless boy? The family name McMillan didn’t ring any bells. They must not be too high society. Then again, I am stuck with the foot soldiers instead of having the rightful Adley title of the 10 of Hearts.
“No, I mean… yes, maybe.” His timid voice scratched at my patience.
“Grow a backbone. Either threaten me, or don’t. Raise your head up and demand answers,” I said, snapping my fingers at him. He reminded me of Ian. The type that didn’t fit the military doctrine. They would rather help than harm.
Sean’s hazel eyes drew up to meet my blue ones. “Who are you? I want to know who you are.” His words were still shaky but much more confident than before.
I rose to my feet, stretching my arms over my head. “Make some tea. It’s a long story.” Prying ears would do little to help. Triple checking the locked door, I settled into the lounge chair, pulling my legs up to sit cross-legged.
Herbal tea, with a hint of mint. Sean poured us both a cup, carefully placing it on the edge of the table nearest me. He sipped silently, awaiting the tale.
Easily unclipping the earrings, the magic faded away from my body. With wide eyes, Sean nearly dropped the delicate tea cup. “You’re his sister! Iris, right? What are you doing in the army? Where is Ian? There were rumors that he had turned down the King of Hearts himself and that’s why the 10 of Hearts seat remained unfilled.” His excitement from the reveal weighed heavily on me.
Holding up my hand, I got him to close his mouth to allow me to speak. “That is true. And I came to the army to appeal for the seat myself.”
“The Red Army doesn’t allow women to join,” Sean said, then gasped. The pieces of the puzzle fitting together snuggly for him. He clutched his cup in both hands. “That’s why you’re impersonating Ian! To prove that you can be just as good a soldier as a man! This is… crazy!”
My family depends on this. Ian caused a rift between our parents, casting father out into Black Territory, leaving me without a home or a penny to my name. Gaining back the title that had been stripped from us would make everything better. I’ll be damned if this boy ruined it.
My harsh gaze fell on him once again, and he shrunk back. “If you spill this information to anyone, I will kill you,” I whispered, climbing out of my chair and leaning down into his face. Gripping the material of his shirt, I jerked Sean forward, our noses touching. “Do you understand? I will end your life in a painful and bloody way and your body will never be found.”
His head bobbed, eyes filled with fright. “I promise. Your secret is safe with me, Ian.” He said my brother’s name easily, a start at proving his loyalty to me.
We shared an entire pot of tea together. Sean asked a million questions, wanting to know all the details of my infiltration into the army. He admitted his fear of the King of Hearts, telling me that I must have been terrified to face him, especially demanding century old rules to be broken.
The King of Hearts.
I would prove to him that I was more than worthy to hold the position of the 10 of Hearts. My skills with a sword, my level head when it came to making split second decisions, even how much I knew about war strategy and the likes. He had dismissed me for my gender, never caring to hear about anything else I could have offered.
His place as the 10 of Hearts will not be reconsidered until he proves himself.
Those words rattled around my head.
One day, I will make him regret turning me away.

Ch. 3
Pairing: Edgar x Iris
Tumblr media
Making this a spectacle put a lot of pressure on me, and that meant that the other recruits will distance themselves from me. They wouldn’t want to garner unnecessary attention from any of the high-ranking officers, especially when Lancelot was clearly picking me out. I took the sword that another officer offered to me, since this uniform hadn’t been supplied with one today. The saber felt heavy in my hand. It’s not exactly what I’m used to, but it’ll do.
Standing in the middle of a wide circle of red army soldiers with the Ace of Hearts, Zero, only a few feet away, my eyes swept across the crowd. The recruits were eager to see the fight, eager to see me lose. Too bad for them. I have too much riding on this to fail now. Twisting my wrist around to get more used to the weight and how it would swing, I tensed when Lancelot gave the order to begin.
Neither of us moved, assessing the other. He can’t be the Ace for nothing. I knew little to nothing about him, since his family name hadn’t been mentioned. Erring on the side of caution, I waited. I needed to see how he moved before I could create some kind of attack plan.
Zero’s first strike was fast, accurate. His saber narrowly missed my ribs as I raised my own to block the blow. The ‘shink’ of the blades sliding apart only lasted for a split second before his second strike, and third, all precise and clean. Before I knew it, I’d been put completely on defense. Ian wouldn’t have had great form anyways, so this worked in my favor.
Each time I blocked, Zero would pull away and strike again, instead of trying to overpower me. He’s clearly holding back. A wave of irritation went through me. Twisting around this time, I made my first offense move. Landing a solid elbow to his jaw, I’d caught him by surprise, as well as everyone else.
“Didn’t they teach you that sword fighting is actually supposed to be with the sword?” Someone called from the group. The others around him seemed to agree.
I wanted to retort, but Zero had to be my priority. He wasn’t going to allow me any moment of rest with his relentless swipes at me. Whoever taught him had done well. It reminded me of the same style I had learned. That’s why neither of us had claimed a clear advantage. We blocked and parried evenly.
“Zero, stop holding back on him,” Lancelot ordered from the side.
As requested, the next swing came much harder. He pushed with his sword, making my balance faulter for just a moment. He swiped his foot, making me smack against the ground on my back with enough force to knock my breath out of me. Sticking out of the dirt a few feet away was my sword. I hadn’t been able to hold on.
The tip of his blade pointed at my face, it seemed like I’d lost. The others around were whispering. Some of the officers were muttering about how sloppy the fight had been, but they were a little impressed that I’d last so long against the Ace. This had to be the end of the fight. Ian surely would have given up.
No one had called the match. Lancelot remained quiet.
And I can’t afford to give up.
The moment would come where I could do something to turn this around. Zero and I were locked in a stare, like he was daring me to get back up. It went on for longer than it should have. Finally, my opportunity presented itself. His gaze moved from me to Lancelot, and for a split second, his grip loosened on the saber, assuming this to be over. Striking out my leg, I hit his knee hard. Gripping the blade with my left hand, I yanked it hard enough to get it free. The steel sliced through my palm, but I’d managed to toss it behind me.
Absolute silence came from around me.
“I guess we’re both disarmed now,” I said, rising to my feet. My hand stung in pain and blood dripped into the dry soil.
The sound of a single person clapping broke the quiet. Behind Zero, the Jack of Hearts, Edgar, had a warm smile on his face as he walked up beside Zero. “That was quite impressive,” he said, something behind those green eyes glittered with excitement. He continued to stare at me, but he spoke to the king. “If it’s alright with you, King Lancelot, I’ll take responsibility for this one.”
Lancelot’s harsh gaze fell on me for a moment before he gave a curt nod and dismissed the rest of the recruits to their respective superiors. Each of the thirteen, save for the King and the doctor, had their own little band of recruits to train. By the end of the month, there would be a test to see who still qualifies to be an official Red Army solider.
The soldiers that had also been chosen by Edgar had gathered around us, still silent.
“Kyle, can you treat his hand and then send him back,” Edgar asked to the Seven of Hearts. Rumor has it, he’s the best doctor in Cradle.
I sighed and stared at the small slice. “I’m fine. It’s just a scrape.” Having been stabbed in the shoulder once, this pain was dull in comparison. A simple wrapping would suffice until after a bit of practice.
Edgar’s green eyes were filled with amusement and he still smiled. “I didn’t ask,” he said, gesturing towards Kyle. He unsettled me with the hint of threat behind his friendly demeanor.
Kyle yawned, stretching his arms over his head. “Come on, newbie. It won’t take but a minute. I promise you won’t miss that much,” he said, stuffing his hands back in the pockets of his lab coat.
I shouldn’t push my luck. Trailing after him, I glanced back over my shoulder to watch the training that had started. In the time it had taken us to cross the grounds, the other recruits in my group had already broken up into pairs to spar. Edgar kept to the outside, calling out different soldiers to correct their stances and movements.
“Sit down,” Kyle instructed, motioning to the empty bed nearest the desk. He went to gather the materials. Pulling his chair up to the bed, he held out his hand. “You did pretty well lasting so long against Zero.”
I hissed when the antiseptic stung the open wound. “More like I did a good job defending myself from his sword.” I wished that I had been able to go all out and use all my skills. Ian isn’t that good. It would blow my cover, and that’s something that can’t happen.
“He’ll have a bruise from that elbow to his jaw. You took everyone by surprise with that,” Kyle replied, wrapping my hand tightly. He tied a knot on the back of my hand to hold it together. “There, you’re all set. Try not to move too much.”
Hopping off the bed, I wiggled my stiff fingers. “Sure, I’ll try.”
With my freedom to return to the training grounds, I made it in time for the very end. As it turns out, this was just a small session to see where everyone’s skills were. They were dismissed for lunch and then would return for real training after that. Annoyed, I sighed but stayed in the open field as the others walked away.
“Wounding yourself in a mock fight is a little reckless, don’t you agree?” Edgar asked, bringing me out of my daze. He was close… A curious gaze in his eyes. Something about him makes me nervous.
I had to lean away, afraid that he might see through the magic crystal that altered my facial features. “If I hadn’t, then I would have been accepting defeat,” I replied.
              “Zero still beat you.”
“Of course, he did. He’s not the Ace for nothing. I just don’t believe in giving up when there are still ways to even the playing field.” It would have become a fist fight. He had brute force, but I had my share of training that would put most of these recruits to shame. If I could have fought him as Iris, and not Ian, then things may have gone differently.
Edgar laughed, still studying me. “You are an interesting one, Ian Adley. Run along, or you’ll miss lunch. Believe me, you’ll need the energy for this afternoon,” he said, turning to walk toward the main building. He never cast another glance.
I, however, stood there until he was out of sight. He makes me uncomfortable, like he could see right through me. My guard will have to much higher with him around. As long as I blend in with the rest of the recruits, maybe this will go smoothly. I just need long enough to prove myself as a good soldier in the Red Army before I tell everyone the truth. That’s what I tried to keep reminding myself.

  Ch. 1
Pairing: Edgar x Iris

“The Red Army doesn’t bend rules.” The king of hearts icy eyes showed no remorse for his words. Since recently visiting my home, he would know that my brother had shirked his duty to join and still refused even with Lancelot Kingsley at our dinner table. That encounter had made our family lose its status. Our house, our land, our dignity. Ripped away by the selfishness of my brother.
Without a horse, I had walked for two days to even get to the Red Army Headquarters. The soldiers at the front gate had tried to turn me away but the Ace of Hearts allowed my entry. Even he said that it would be a futile attempt to speak to Lancelot now. “I see no where in the rules where women aren’t allowed.”
Lancelot didn’t budge on his stance. “Ian has refused his duty, and henceforth, that has taken away any status that the Adley family has. They have no place among the army. Zero will take you home, Iris.” His gaze dropped back down to the papers on his desk.
“I don’t have a home, anymore. You took that from us,” I said, turning on my heel. My family had split apart mere days after having our status demoted to civilians. My mother’s family had taken her in under the stipulation that she remove any contact with the rest of us. My father moved to black territory, hoping to find work. Ian had disappeared the very night he refused to join. My place had yet to be found. Using money that I stole from the house before I left, I’ve been moving around from town to town, finding no welcome as a stripped aristocrat.
Zero held the door open for me, not having said a word the entire time.
“If Ian finds himself ready to serve his country, I might be willing to allow him in as an ordinary soldier. His place as the Ten of Hearts will not be reconsidered until he proves himself,” Lancelot spoke, still not taking his attention off his work.
If I can even find him. His quest to find his true love had drove him away from his family, making him turn his back on us. If that’s what love is, I will never succumb to it. We were opposites. He enjoyed cooking, housework, and writing poems. I had been the one who mastered swordplay and learned to strategize for war. For fun, father would say. It would be to encourage my brother not to be outdone by me.
Following behind me like shadow, Zero finally spoke. “The Red Army has never had a woman as soldier, let alone as one of the Chosen Thirteen. I’m sorry that he denied your request, but it’s probably for the best. War isn’t a—”
“Don’t finish that sentence,” I snapped. Men. Always so sure that women are weak and frail. If he’d only given me a chance to show how well I can handle a sword… I was sure he would change his mind. Instead, all the King of Hearts did was hide behind their misogynistic view.
“The stables are this way, I can take you wherever you’d like,” he offered, gesturing away from the main gate. He didn’t seem like a bad person, but with my blood boiling, there was no kind words that would make me calm.
With a shake of my head, I couldn’t help the anger in my tone. “I’ll be fine on my own. The Central Quarter isn’t that far.” Without looking back, I forced my body to move. If Lancelot thinks that his harsh words and assessments are going to keep me from getting back what he stole from my family, he is sorely mistaken.
The soldiers stationed by the entrance were snickering to each other and staring blatantly as I passed by. They instantly straightened up as two others approached on horseback. Both of them were high ranking officers. Their crests were the Jack of Hearts and the Queen of Hearts. Rumor has it that the Queen of Hearts is has no heart when it comes to training new recruits. The Jack, however, had a family name that I recognized, the Bright’s. While my family never had any direct contact, I’m sure the two of us have met at least once when we were young and at some social party.
The walk back to the Central Quarter took half an hour and my feet ached from all the traveling I’d done in the last few days. The prestigious inn near the very center cost more than I could afford for a few nights, so I simply planned to stay one. Where to go next alluded me. In my frustrated state, my mind wandered to the Black Army. They were said to take anyone in who had skills.
Groaning, I flopped on the comfy bed, something that the other inns in smaller towns lacked. Joining the Black Army would do me no good. It won’t get my status back in the Red Territory. It won’t bring my family back together. Mother would rather live dirt poor than move to Black Territory. The money in my satchel clinked together, reminding me off their worth.
If Ian finds himself ready to serve his country.
Ian would die in the first day of training.
Sitting up, the wheels in my head began to turn. Lancelot only met Ian once, for a brief moment. That’s not long enough to have accessed his character in battle or his skills with sword. Grabbing my dagger from my satchel, I couldn’t get to the bathroom quick enough. My image in the mirror stared back at me. Ian and I were three years apart, and while no one had said we could be twins, we did look much alike. Same thin blonde hair that frizzed in the summer heat. Same strikingly bright blue eyes. His jawline was more defined than mine, which was softer and rounder.
If Lancelot Kingsley won’t accept anyone but Ian…
I’ll have to become him.
Raising the blade to my gorgeously long blonde hair, I sliced the strands bit by bit. The pile on the floor growing thicker by the second. I couldn’t bare for it to be so short like most men were. Instead, making it still long enough to pull it back. After all his soul searching for the past six months, he’s bound to of let himself go a little. My other features still proved my gender, as I had a decent amount of breast to cover up.
The only favor I could pull to help was a seamstress in town who favored me since I was a child. Rosanne Collings. Her business is going strong, and she makes very beautiful clothes for both men and women. If anyone could help me, it was her. But, at this hour, she might already have left.
Tomorrow is the first day of training, and if Ian fails to show up, I wonder if Lancelot would ever consider letting him in again.
Thank the heavens that Rosanne still worked late. She smiled at me, “Hello, Iris. It’s lovely for you to have to dropped by. I heard what happened with your family, and dear if you need anything, please don’t hesitate to ask.” This woman is the most wonderful woman who ever lived. She had never married, nor had a child of her own. To her, I was her daughter.
“Rosanne, I do need something,” I said, shifting my weight from one foot to the other. If she turns me away, I’m not sure that there’s any way I can get what I need. This is all Ian’s fault. The first thing I do when I see him again some day is punch him.
Rosanne pulled the door open further. “Please do come in! What is it?” She closed the door, flipping the lock. She had always been so careful when living alone.
“I need you to help me look like a man.”

Ch. 2
Pairing: Edgar x Iris

Rosanne did not disappoint. While her disapproval of my actions clearly present, she had called in the cavalry. Two other middle-aged women were gathered around me, deliberating on how to proceed. The first thing that they decided had to be addressed was my breasts. A lot of pain came with how tightly Edna was wrapping them. She had experience in helping royals into ballgowns and that required some strength. Corsets were hard to lace up. She blew a strand of hair out of face. “What do you think, Meredith? Will that be tight enough to use with the crystals.”
Meredith worked as a fairy godmother of sorts. It was a hush hush kind of thing, but for the right price, she could give you crystals that could alter some features slightly. Kind of like draping a mirage over your own body. Completely changing a person’s face or body was impossible, but she promised that it would be enough. “We just have to give you a rougher edge to your jawline, and keep those lady parts nice and hidden, and overall make you give off a presence of manly.”
Rosanne had been busy making me pants and shirts to wear for any casual occasion. The Red Army uniform that regular soldiers wore would be issued upon arrival. I needed something to wear tomorrow, and Rosanne knew Ian well enough that she could make an outfit that would be most like him. Something casual, a little baggy, but still put together, as I, disguised as Ian, would be begging for a chance to prove myself.
“Here, dear,” Meredith patted an empty chair. “You’re going to have to sit down for this.” She had a large needle in her hand. It took a moment for me to realize. Ian has his right ear pierced at the top. Thankfully, I had never wanted to do that. Regretfully, that means my first piercing is going to be done by someone other than a professional. “Now, the crystal is easy to pop out so long as you take the back of the earring off. You’ll have to replace it every four days. Since it’s so small, you’ll get more of them from the crystals you’ve bought.”
The tip of needle poked into the soft cartilage of my ear. I sucked in a breath. The stinging pain that shot through my body as she stabbed me, made me cry out in pain. “Oww. Owww! That hurts!” I complained, gripping the edge of the seat to keep from moving away.
Meredith laughed lightly. “Iris, you’re going to be training with men much stronger than you. You’ll have to learn to take pain without screaming like a girl. While my crystals can change your appearance, they cannot change your voice. You’ll have to keep your octave a little lower.” Sticking in the earring, she wiped away the little trickle of blood.
Going over to the mirror, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was me, but it was Ian. “This is crazy,” I said, touching my chin to see if it was still the same. It felt like my chin and jaw… Running my fingers over my breasts, they were still there but, in the mirror, I couldn’t tell. Magic is awesome.
Rosanne brought me some black slacks and a tan baggy long sleeved shirt. “Iris, I wish you would reconsider, but I know your pride won’t let you,” Rosanne said, watching me slid the pants on and the sliding a belt through the loops to keep it on my bony hips.
I smiled at her, giving her a kiss on the cheek. “Thank you for worrying about me, but this is what I was meant to do. Fighting was always my strong suit,” I replied. Ian wouldn’t survive the first week of army training.
Meredith handed me my satchel and slid the bag of crystal pieces into it. “You need to hurry. The Red Army loves rules, and all recruits must be present by 9AM, right?” She pointed to the clock that read 8:30. We’d been at this all night, and at this rate, I might be late.
Edna wrapped her arms around my neck. “This material is water resistant, so taking a bath should be alright. Just come see me on your off day and I’ll redo it for you,” she said, patting my back.
Rosanne and Meredith both hugged me tightly as well, giving more wishes of good luck.
Setting out to return to the Red Army Headquarters, I had to run through the Central Quarter to make it there on time. Catching my breath just outside of the main gates, a familiar voice came from beside me. It was the Queen of Hearts, Jonah. “You there. You should have already arrived to change into your uniform. What’s your name?”
Damn. I didn’t even think about that. “Ian Adley,” I replied, getting an immediate frown out of him. With my showing up yesterday, Lancelot probably told him about me and Ian.
“You finally decided to serve like your uncle before you?” He asked, not believing it. After a moment of uncomfortable silence, he turned on his heel. “This way. King Lancelot will decide whether or not you will be accepted into the Red Army.” He had an arrogant air about him, and he clearly did not like me.
Moving down the familiar hallways, we passed two others of the chosen thirteen, Zero and Kyle. Zero stopped mid-sentence, staring at me. He stepped into my path, and asked, “Are you Ian Adley?” He squinted at me, like he could see through my disguise.
“My sister insisted that I at least try,” I replied, keeping my voice even and low. Being Ian isn’t so hard. He’s just a pushover who doesn’t care about the military at all. At least this way I can make myself, well Iris, look good.
Jonah cleared his throat, standing at the door of Lancelot’s office. “King Lancelot is very busy, soldier.”
Slipping past Zero, I took a deep breath and entered his office. It’s kind of nerve racking to be back here. The last time he had rejected me so blatantly. Ian wouldn’t be impressive after he insulted the King of Hearts at the dinner. The silence was only broken when I said, “Iris told me what she tried to do, and then smacked me for running away.”
Those clear blue eyes narrowed at me, and he folded his hands on the desk in front of him. “Yes, I do admire her resolve to take your place.” He stood, walking around the desk and up to me. “It’s because of her that I have made decision to allow you to join the Red Army as a regular soldier. Should you prove yourself to be worth of the title, in a year or two, the position of the Ten of Hearts will be taken into consideration.”
That means I’m in, right? Schooling my features to keep from smiling at my small victory, I nodded my head. “I understand, King Lancelot.”
Lancelot moved past me, toward the door. “Jonah will take you to the barracks where you will change and come to first exam. Should any of the officers want to take you under their command, then, and only then, will you be permitted into the Army.” He left with a flutter of his cape and left no room for argument.
“It’s unlikely due to your inexperience and the knowledge that you ran away from your duty,” Jonah said before leaving me in a plain barrack room. He’d walked down in front of me, not bothering so much as to look at me. He wouldn’t be on my side.
The uniform lying on the bed took longer to put on than I imagined, but I appreciated the privacy at the moment. There were actually two beds, making this a shared living space. Difficult to be a girl with a male roommate, but I’ll make due. If everyone knows about Ian, then they’ll have found out that he’s quite strange and oddly girly. It wasn’t a bad quality, and in fact, worked in my favor.
The clock struck nine just as I slid into the last spot at the very back of the rows of soldiers, all here to join the Red Army. Lancelot stood at the head, speaking about their duty and the training that we would all undergo as new recruits. The chosen thirteen were around him, surveying the men around me. My name being brought up caught my attention. Lancelot’s harsh gaze was back on me, and the group of men moved out from around me. “Ian, since you didn’t find it in your soul to fulfill your duty until just this morning, you will have to defeat our Ace of Hearts in a duel before you are permitted.”
              Great.
