The Note

This is the epilogue to Isn’t She Beautiful? (it is set right after the last chapter). After having spent the last two days editing ISB I have been in a Sherlolly mood and I couldn’t stop thinking about writing this scene.

Hope you enjoy!!

Sherlock stood staring at the bookshelf, an annoyed expression on his face.

“I know you’re here somewhere.” He stepped closer and started shuffling the books as he read off the titles. “Grr!” He grunted as he came to the last one. “Molly!” He shouted and started pulling book after book off the shelf.

“Yes?” She called back as she hurried down the stairs. She rounded the corner and stopped when she saw the mess he was making. “Sherlock Holmes!”

“I had a better filing system at 221B than you have here!” He shook a book at her and then tossed it on the floor. “How do you even have these arranged?”

“Well, to start with, if you are looking for anything medical, research based, or science related at all” – she stepped over the pile of books and squatted down to open the two cabinets below the shelf – “they are down here.” She looked up at him and smiled. “Now, the rest of these,” she said as she stood, “They are organized by genre and then alphabetized from there.”

He frowned at her and knelt down to search in the cabinet. He shuffled a few things around but found the one he was searching for in seconds.

“Thank you.” He nodded towards Molly and started to walk away with his book.

“Oh no!” She reached out and grabbed the back of his shirt. “If we make Mina clean up her messes, then you have to clean up yours too.” He hung his head and turned on his heal.

“I’m in the middle of a case?” he asked, hands in the air. Molly shook her head no and had to bite her lip to keep from smiling at the ridiculous man. “Fine!” he sighed in mock exasperation.

“Thank you.” She bent down and started helping him put the books back on the shelf. She explained that her favorite genre, mystery, was first, and then romcoms and thrillers, and so on. Sherlock, still not understanding the importance of romcoms, just nodded his head and put the books back on the shelf as she instructed. “See? Perfect!” Molly ran her hand over a section of books.

“Do you need this?” He bent down and picked up a folded piece of paper. It looked warn, as if it had been read many times. He unfolded it and flattened the paper against the book in his other hand. Molly, Thank you. Sherlock

“Oh.” She smiled when she saw what it was.

“You kept this?” he asked.

“Of course.” She took it from him and traced the letters.

“But why?” He furrowed his brow in confusion. She looked up at him in surprise.

“What do you mean why?” She looked back down at the note. “I wanted to remember.”

“That I faked my death and slept with you right afterwards?”

“No!” She laughed and gently shoved his shoulder. “No, I wanted to remember you.” She looked back at the note and smiled before closing her eyes. “I wanted…I wanted to remember how it felt to be with you...how it felt when you said you were going to miss me.”

She finally opened her eyes when he didn’t say anything – confusion was still written all over his face.

“It’s called be sentimental, Sherlock.” She rolled her eyes and folded the note before slipping it back into the mystery section on the shelf.

“You’re still going to keep it?” He asked. “Even though you have me?” Molly thought for a moment, trying to think of a way he would understand.

“You know how you gave me the buttons when you first moved in?” He nodded his head. “The note is like that.”

“But those are reminders of good things.” He tossed his book to the couch, all but forgotten why he needed it in the first place.

“So is that.” She pointed to the note’s hiding place on the shelf.

“No.” She frowned at him. “Not for me.”

“What do you mean?” Molly stepped closer and took his hand in hers.

“Writing that note, leaving you…that was the hardest thing I had ever had to do.” He hugged her tight and placed a kissed on her shoulder. “I don’t say that lightly.”

“I know you don’t.” She slipped her arms under his and hugged him back.

“I was an idiot for waiting so long.”

“Yes you were.” Molly nodded in agreement. “But you found your way back to me.”

“It was bumpy road.” He said, smiling at her.

“Yes it was.” She pushed herself up on her toes and kissed him.
