actually, the devil judge would be a pretty cool rpg!! playing as gaon exploring the kang mansion would give such indie (horror) rpg vibes, going around doing little tasks to befriend ms. ji and elijah and the mansion getting brighter as you befriend them, and each case for the live court could be quests. play as different characters, like soohyun investigating yohan or k doing one of his missions, or even as sunah!! plus it could implement the whole "good, bad and real endings" some games have, the canon drama ending could be the "real" one since those are most likely to be bittersweet

little things I noticed in ep 1 & 2 while rewatching tdj

gaon has a large carton with "cucumber" written on it on his balcony. at first i thought it was where he was growing them (gaon growing vegetables himself ?) but then i realised it's just a box he probably re-used for storage

gaon also has the same stress medication on his desk that yohan had in the mansion's kitchen. was it gaon who bought more and put it there ? would be amusing if he did it as in "girl fuck you im getting grey hairs thanks to your nonsense". or maybe he thought yohan needed the pills :')

edit: no actually yohan also had them on his desk in his office in ep 2...he had TWO bottles 😭 also two hourglasses, one big and one small, they both get blown up with the desk etc when the bomb explodes

we see lee youngmin in ep 1 going down the stairs of what i assume is the venue for yohan's first speech. ig his parents dragged him there

jinjoo has a hair brush on her desk, some pink/blue/red pens, an hourglass too ? as well as a hairband with pearls, and a bunch of other objects i could not see clearly, while gaon, aside from classic desk stuff, has a large thermos, the stress meds and also an hourglass. is it common in korean offices or just a symbolic detail for the characters ?

btw that cardboard cutout of yohan jinjoo has on her desk means that it's canon that at some point in tdj universe, kang yohan had barcode bangs 👍🏼scan him at the self checkout

it's interesting that during the ep 2 restaurant dinner, gaon assumes yohan was /born/ in a rich family (at least that's what the subtitles say, idk about the actual word used in korean). the wording is important when you know the circumstances of yohan's birth

I wonder how Gaon and Yohan are going to explain the change in their interactions to Elijah, since it's going to be obvious to her that something has happened between them. Since Elijah knows that there's nothing between Gaon and Soo hyun, I wonder if she will play a role in clearing Yohan's misconception? Thanks for the update! That definitely depends on who's doing the explaining xD Yo Han would just brush it off and pretend that nothing is happening — which would just piss her off — while Ga On would make a stilted effort to explain without making it too obvious what it's actually about. Which would also annoy her.

That poor girl, seriously. She doesn't deserve to get caught between these two idiots.

I'm not sure I agree that Elijah "knows" that there was nothing between Ga On and Soo Hyun, though. I think she very much thinks there was something between them. I mean, sure, they denied it when she asked if they were dating, but THE WAY they did so was pretty telling (especially in Soo Hyun's case). Even more so since Elijah is a bit... well, innocent? I think most of her experience with love comes from media, books etc. and how Ga On and Soo Hyun behaved is, well, straight from a drama xD

And Elijah also had that talk with Soo Hyun when they were eating ice cream on Ga On's terrace, where it became pretty obvious that Soo Hyun is in love with Ga On and has already confessed to him several times.

So I think Elijah very much believes they were in love. Which means she won't really play a role in convincing Yo Han otherwise — if asked, she'd probably only make it worse, even. Because her understanding of love is a bit superficial and probably pretty geared towards straightness. That's not to say that she's not aware of gay people (I think she might actually know more about that than Ga On does xD) but from the evidence she's seen both Ga On and Yo Han seem straight to her (because I can't imagine that Yo Han has flaunted his dalliances with other men in front of her).

I know I'm very, very firm about this but Elijah doesn't know that Yo Han and Ga On have the hots for each other. And not because she's stupid, but because she's grown up in a country where straightness is the norm and Yo Han has done everything he can to hide the depth of his and Ga On's relationship from her. Also, she's a self-centred teenager x'D

Like, take me for an example. I was around 23-24 and very comfortable in my own pansexuality but was still IN NO WAY PREPARED when my mum basically went: "I may only have had sex with two women in my life but, let me tell you — 10/10, would recommend." Because I had only ever seen her date and talk about men before and therefore assumed she had no interest in anything else. That's how easy it is to miss that someone close to you isn't entirely straight — especially if it's a parent/guardian.

So I really don't think that Elijah would notice until it gets a lot more obvious than this xD

Which wasn't technically what your ask was about (sorry for the tangent xD), but still important to know because Elijah really won't be all that helpful when it comes to Yo Han and Ga On figuring out their feelings for each other. In fact, she might just end up making things harder for them without meaning to. But more about that in later chapters ;)

Okay, so I liked my overall time with Nijigasaki. It's a generally cute time. It looks quite good (even if the production seems to have been tight so the general animation is sometimes stiff when it doesn't need to be more), and the music video style for the solo performances is something I'll dearly miss if it doesn't carry over into future series.

But I have two main problems with Nijigasaki:

1) It's not goofy enough

2) Too many characters so we don't get sufficient character work

The first thing is more so just a personal preference. Yes, maybe Chika jumping into the ocean and Riko rushing after her because she thinks she's committing suicide, but then it turns out that she was just taking a dip to clear her head and then all the girls have a big gay moment in the water as Chika cries, is a *bit* much. (love that moment tho)

I think for the drama, the more subdued approach sometimes works. Yes, instead of the above moment, the characters in Nijigasaki just talk things out. I like that. Not necessarily at the expense of the other approach, but it's a nice change.

But, it doesn't led itself to the comedy well, and I mainly enjoy Love Live as a sitcom. The characters in Nijigasaki, because they take a more subdued approach, are also just too bland. They're too normal. What is the weirdest quirk in Nijigasaki? Well, Shizuku was scared that people wouldn't like her when she was young because she liked old movies (something that is NEVER brought up again btw. a consistent issue). Compared to Yohane, who falls out of trees and then calls herself a fallen angel, so there's a legitimate reason to be worried that people won't like her lol. Like, the Nijigasaki girls are all too saccharine, they're too smoothed over, they're too boring.

The second thing is that we just have too many characters. Most of season 1 is spent about introducing each girl, one episode each, that we don't get the chance to actually build a group dynamic and individual episodes. Granted, the second season does try to fix this by making units, and I overall think it does improve things, but not everything.

The new girls, for example, get their one episode but don't have much of a build-up. Even with Lanzhu and Mia having struggles that should work, it often just makes me go "i guess that makes sense" rather than actually make me feel something.

Maybe Lanzhu's whole deal of pushing people away would've hit if we actually got more than barely a few actually significant conversations between her and the cast, and some interesting dynamics. Maybe we should've gotten more from Shirioko than just her one episode.

Is it the gayest Love live so far? Eh... Like, sure, it definitely has the gayest MOMENTS, but because of the lack of character work, we don't actually have as gay RELATIONSHIPS compared to Sunshine.

Think about someone like Rina (who should have the face board on way more often, so much missed comedic potential). Who do we ship her with? Ai (who is so flat as a character btw)? We barely get screentime with the two and they don't have much of a dynamic at all. And now Rina is holding hands with Mia and everything?

Or one episode, we get ship bait for Kasumi and Kanata. Does Kanata have any sort of relationship with anyone in the cast really? We haven't developed it. And Kasumin could have more stuff with Shizuku but we barely get anything. There are too many characters. We don't have clearly defined ships.

Why don't we have clearly defined ships? Is that all I'm looking for in this show? Gay stuff? No, but it points to the larger issue. It's because the character work is too vague, too fluid, too underworked. To the point that we don't actually have strong enough bonds between the characters.

Anyway, it's still a fun series. It is by no means close to the best Love Live has to offer for me but it's still a good Love Live series and I enjoyed my time with it. Hope the music video style continues somehow in Superstar. And Kasumin is still best girl.

my first favorite was riko, i remember i got into love live in ~2016 (after sunshine season 1 but before season 2, before the first aqours duo-trio album as well) with my first actual taste of it being sif1 (rip....), i saw her at the screen to choose your starting idol(?) and i really liked her from that point. however, i think shes probably been overtaken by yohane for my favorite aqours member. recently yohane got an anime focused on her and ive been meaning to watch it but havent yet... i also need to finish sunshine season2 ive been procrasting SINCE IT CAME OUT!!! T-T

when nijigaku (at the time pdp) was revealed i clung to kanata, however my fave nijigaku member is now probably lanzhu (she might be one you remember me talking about? possibly yohane as well), the only sifas season i fully(?) read was season 2 bc of her, thats the season she was introduced/an antagonist in, i want to watch the nijigaku anime to see her but i heard they changed her personality a bit so im a bit anxious. everyone hated lanzhu when she was first revealed it seems except me. also shes the only member i actually tried to read all of the bond stories of in sifas (rip........)

for liella, i forget who i liked when they were first revealed pre-anime, but i do like keke. i also think margarete will become a fave as well when she joins liella in the upcoming third season i already like her a little :3

I am Thinking so hard about The Devil Judge, with all it's the Christian symbolism/themes/motifs. Thinking about Soohyun catching the knife in her right hand, and Yohan in his left. Thinking about how In parables/hymns/iconography the right side represent righteousness; salvation. The left represents corruption; damnation.

A thing the show does VERY well imo is show how – despite neither Yohan nor Gaon being portrayed as religious people — Christianity is engraved into their minds and that of other characters like the freaking ten commandments in Moses's Tablets and it is hurting them like an "étau" a kind of piece of steel they cannot get out of.

Yohan's father being a pastor, hating himself to the core for the "sin" Yohan reminds him of, and therefore passing onto that seld-hatred and Cycle of Violence to his son.

Who then grew to be some twisted Version of a Messiah for whom the only way to cleanse the world is to burn it.

Gaon is equally hurt by his beliefs, his blind trust in Juge Min and in the judiciary system enabling him to stand tall and tell Yohan "you're wrong" but also not seeing the true culprit behind it all.

And it's something that I love thoughout the show, how Gaon and Yohan's colors bleed into one another. Yohan is able to appreciate the beauty in people at the end more than in the beginning. Gaon is aware of the filth of the world in the end more than in the beginning.

And you can just see how in the beginning Gaon's values align with Soohyeon and how they more and more align with Yohans' as it goes on?

And then effectively being it. "Betraying Jesus with a Kiss" like HNGHF.

It reminded me of this discussion I had with a Tumblr person, and they were telling me that one interpretation of Judas's betrayal was to see it as a necessity, for Jesus to have been able to be resurrected and cleanse the world from its sins. And that Jesus would only burden his most trusted person (Judas), with the task of betraying Jesus despite loving him.

Anyway, people have analyzed this better than I have but Tumblr's mobile search algorithm being... Yeah I can't find any of them.

^^ this banger plays during intimate family scenes in the show, so when yohan comes home to eat for the first time and when gaon traces soohyun's footsteps from the days before she died while missing her. naturally then, i thought the song was about love and family and finding someone. many months later i googled the lyrics and found this:

I’m tuning my ears on this dark street, listening to you You’re not coming yet but I’m waiting for you again

which, just broke me clean in half. the song feels like being in limbo for me, something magical and something full of longing, akin to walking beside a canal at night in the summer. it's a generative headspace to be in because of the range of emotions there, so i turn to this song a lot.

30. Have you ever written something that was out of your comfort zone? If so, what was it, and how did it affect your approach to writing fic thereafter?   

it's 'everything everywhere all at once', my money lender au. it's different because it's a multi-chapter story, so i am forced to abide by its timeline when my modus operandi for my other stories is to jump between scenes/time periods based on what i feel like writing at that moment. writing according to the parameters i set has been a great exercise in learning self-discipline, and in not overcomplicating things! what's important is the function of the scene and not small details of the setting, for example.

31. What’s your ideal fic length to write?

2-3k words long, and usually a single scene. think gahan on the train in 'final coda' or in the kitchen in 'i hope you are lonely'. something highly emotional and compact.

I have many thoughts about episode 4 of The Devil Judge.

Shallow one first: this was kinda hot. Scary, and also wow. Gaon is not a small guy, and Yohan just...throws him around. This particular act of violence is one that in most contexts deeply upsets me, but then there are other contexts where it's the complete opposite.

Along those lines, I bet this is absolutely going to turn ugly(er) for Yohan at some point. That mob is going to turn on him. I predict this partly because it makes sense drama-wise, but also because the show is being all "look how horrible people can be" and one of the horrible things people do is turn on each other on a dime like a pack of rabid wolves.

Less shallow: the show is trying to show a near future dystopian society with wealthy people being disgusting about their power and crazy blood-thirsty mobs springing up in support of the crazy violent television personality and everyone else just trying to get by as the wealth gap yawns ever wider, and I'm like...future dystopia haha some days that's the modern world. 😄 😭

(This show is doing a great job of tapping into my cynicism btw.)

That last scene - was Yohan LYING about what happened at the church???? I can't figure out if I'm supposed to hate this guy or root for him.

Gaon, on the other hand, seems like a good-guy train wreck in progress. Or like a naive, earnest, kinda bitchy tiny bird trying to fly through shrapnel and not smart enough to get out of the way. Babie. I feel like things are going to get worse before they get better for him.

He is far from perfect; he's judgemental and hot-headed (and how can he stay in someone's house and then go snooping around like that, wtf, rude; and then while staying in said house accuse the owner to his face of killing his brother? *facepalm* I completely understand Yohan's reaction to that. He should have maybe just kicked Gaon out or decked him at worst, but even someone who is NOT unstable would react badly to that). But! I like him and I'm a little worried about him.

💎 I don't totally remember, but it was back in 2016ish! I started with llsif before any of the anime, and picked hanayo as my starter R because she looked relatable.

🍭 I have a few bodytype headcanons because staff are cowards, but that's a lot to list. most of them are panromantic in my head, except for a handful of lesbians, biros, and aros. I've got mental illness, neurodiversity, and physical disability headcanons that extend into my "future life" headcanons and theories. my most standout headcanon's gotta be the "seiran has a joined middle school that shizuku attended before transferring to nijigaku" one!

- because of her bad luck, she tends to get a ton of ouchies, so its no rare sight to see her tearing up, asking for kisses to make it better

- very mischievous !! she loves getting into everything and doing things behind her carers back, only to get caught and have to be scolded

- she loves dress up and pretend. she gets very into it and can get quite loud; she has to be reminded to use her inside voice quite often

- so, she loves the outdoors cause she can be as loud as she wants !! its the best place for her to get all of that energy out

- its pretty easy to get her to do things like her morning routine or take a bath, but she tends to get distracted, so guidance is her friend

- most of her plushies are bats and monsters or darkly themed teddies

- loves to take her little one out on walks around awashima or to the park to help get all that energy out ! if not that, then shes probably teaching them how to swim
