A/N: I'M BACK!! And a day earlier than promised. I was going to stick to tomorrow, but I had time today and didn't want to study for psych (still don't, still gotta do it). At some point, my next update will be this week, probably Thursday or Friday. Hope you enjoy this chapter. It's good to be back.
Leo gave Adi very little information on the job he needed her help with as they trudged through the Ratway Vaults. She kept asking him questions about it, the Breton being as vague as he could. While Adi deserved answers, he was afraid she wouldn’t be as willing to go with him if she knew why he brought her along rather than Etienne. Curiosity was the best motivator, and from the time he got to know her, he could tell she was a naturally curious person.
Adi tried to get Leo to break, to tell her something, but he wouldn’t budge. It was remarkable how patient and secretive the thief was, not giving anything away. It wasn’t just increasing her curiosity, it was starting to irritate her. Shouldn’t she get some context? What if her walking in blind was going to put a hindrance on Leo’s mission? Did Brynjolf know something about it, considering his enthusiasm towards the idea of her going? She wasn’t sure, but something told her it would be worth it.
“Here we are,” Leo stopped in front of a rusted iron door and pushed on it. It creaked loudly as it opened, Adi wincing at the noise. The tunnel that met them on the other side sloped downwards, leading both thieves to cling to the wall as they found their footing. Adi cast the magelight spell as they continued downward, allowing their path to be seen more clearly.
At the end of the path was a stone door with Bretic lettering all around the perimeter. In the center was a seal with a crest engraved into it. From the magelight, Adi could make out a Breton soldier shooting an arrow. Above them was a dragon, flying above it as if fighting on the same side. “Care to give me some context now?”
“This door is a blood seal,” Leo explained to Adi, trying to push down a sudden bought of nerves. “I haven’t been able to open it, but I have reason to believe that you can.”
In all honesty, Leo had been able to open the door to the tomb multiple times. On the other side was their father’s final resting place, waiting for Adi to discover the truth about her family and what happened to him. Both the Rolaine’s were granted access through the bloodline, and it was time for Adi to find out who she was.
“What exactly is this reason?”
“The resting place of the man behind this door is your father.”
Adi froze in her place as she stared at her friend, everything coming together. Leo’s odd interest in her, how he started treating her like a little sister after she returned from a mission, and his sudden protectiveness when she and Brynjolf made things official. His avoidance of giving details on the mission was the icing on the sweet roll, the clarity hitting her all at once.
As the latest one faded, she cast another mage light spell and turned to the seal. Making a cut on her wrist with her unenchanted ebony dagger, Adi pressed it to the cold stone and watched as it gave off a light glow. Once her hand left the stone, the crest spun and split the door in two. It slid into the wall, revealing a well-lit tomb filled with urns and chests.
Right in the middle was a coffin, similar to the ones she had witnessed Draugr’s burst out of, and on top was a rusted ring and a worn letter. Adi entered the room cautiously, half-expecting to be attacked by Draugr at any second. Instead, it was quiet. A peaceful sense of quiet, too, which was unusual for Adi to find.
She picked up the ring, noting the same crest engraved into it, and pocketed it. What interested her more was the letter. It was old and weathered, and a thick layer of dust coated it. Blowing on the parchment, Adi coughed when a cloud rose up to her face, and she breathed it in. Once she got a clear look at the letter, Adi shook the rest of the dust off. Although weathered and faded, she could read the writing and take it to sit on top of the coffin as she discovered the truth.
***
My dear child,
By the time you read this, I will have been long gone.
I am writing to you because you deserve to know. If the rumours around Riften are true, my time on Nirn has ended.
High Rock was not good to me. My own parents - your Grandparents - cast my newborn son and me out after my wife died, and I found solace in Skooma. My addiction had taken over my life, and instead of their support, I got their judgement. Having nothing but the clothes on my back, I ran away to Skyrim and settled in Riften.
Things did not get any easier from there.
My addiction worsened, the production of Skooma booming beneath the rule of Jarl Law-Giver. I met a woman there and fell for her fast. She was charming and beautiful but quite manipulative at the same time.
We met when I got involved in Skooma production, becoming the most well-known dealer in all of Skyrim. People were clambering for the drug, practically shoving their septims at me. Soon enough, I was able to afford Honeyside. I lived like a King in Riften and got the attention of a very powerful figure.
Maven Black-Briar came to me with a devious plan. She held some power in the Hold, but not nearly enough. Mead seemed to be the easiest way to get through to the citizens of Skyrim, so she wanted to make a product that people would do anything to get their hands on. Hence, my involvement.
Black-Briar Meadery started out as a seedy company but a successful one. Maven paid me double to give her the Skooma that would be added to her drinks; soon enough, people were addicted. Business boomed at any Tavern that carried Black-Briar Mead, and the demand increased. As it did, so did the price.
I quickly fell in love with Maven and her ambition, and our relationship changed. For better or for worse, it was a whirlwind romance. The love lasted five years, and I’m afraid it has abruptly stopped.
Word spread that Lady Maven is pregnant with my child. My reputation is not that of a positive one, and if the rumour is proven to be accurate, Maven’s reputation will be at stake… and so will my life.
This is why I am writing to you now, hoping that she will allow you to live and you’ll grow up somewhere better. I was not a good person, and I was no better father.
I wanted to do better for you and for your brother.
Take care of Leotinus for me. He deserved better than what he had.
Love your father,
Degin Rolaine
***
Adi read the letter more times than she cared to admit, the tension in the room growing with each read. Leo fiddled with the signet ring on his finger, waiting for her reaction. She clearly needed the time to process, and he would give her as much time as she needed. It was a lot of information to take in, especially regarding Maven’s involvement. “Leo…”
“Yeah?” he looked up to see Adi looking at him, tears threatening to spill.
“You’re…”
“Your half-brother, yeah.”
“Tell me your side of the story.”
“I was ten when he died.” He began, leaning against the coffin. “Maven stabbed him for getting her pregnant with an… “impurity” as she called you. I was partially hidden when it happened and saw the whole thing. Blood was everywhere, and the image of Degin’s body covered in stab wounds is still vivid today. I ended up moving from Honeyside and joined the Thieves Guild. As for the ten years I had with our dad? He was neglectful. I didn’t have a good relationship with the guy.”
“So Maven sent me to Honorhall because she didn’t want me,” Adi stated out loud, the feeling in her stomach churning with disgust at hearing those words. “Why did she even go through with it?”
“Reputation, mostly,” Leo answered honestly. He knew Adi well enough that sugar-coating anything, even while she was in this state, would only worsen the situation. “She managed to play off that it was her real husband’s kid and then sent you to Grelod once you were born. Spread the rumour you were stillborn, so no one is aware of your relationship to the woman.”
“One last question.” Adi’s eyes darkened, and she looked into Leo’s electric blue eyes. His were filled with hate, hate towards Degin and Maven. Adi felt the same he did and had to do something about it.
“I’m listening.”
“Will you help me take Maven down for everything she’s done?”

A Princess’ Choice - Chapter 9
Game: Be My Princess Pairing: Oh who’s it gonna be? MC X a butler maybe, or a prince Genre: Comedy, fluff, drama MC Name: Kia Rating: I’m sure this will be ok as a 15 but it MAY change in the future, depends on where I want to take this fic…I really should plan better.
Summary: Kia Michael is Lord Nobel Michaels hidden granddaughter and she has a huge responsibility in being heir to the throne, finding a husband is one. She knows marrying a prince from another kingdom would be hugely beneficial to everyone…but what if it’s a butler who captures her heart instead?
Chapters: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
Tagging @hifftn
“And, of course, not forgetting the rule 487 that was established way back…” Prince Joshua continued talking as we took a walk outside together.
Two days. I had only been here two, whole, days, and he was still going on about the glorious rules of his kingdom. Was this even real anymore? Was I hallucinating at this point? He wasn’t even doing this in order either! How the actual fuck did he manage to go through all his rules without doing them in order?! Normally, I’d be impressed at the skill of it, but honestly? I was bored out of my mind. I couldn’t wait to get back to my room and discuss what Zain had found from the rumours. Roberto said he found something too. But no, I couldn’t learn about this yet, I had to spend time with Joshua. Official duties and all.
“Fascinating” I piped up since I hadn’t spoken for a while.
“Isn’t it? I heard Michel has less than half the rules we have here, so if we were to marry, I’m sure we could implement some” he suggested.
“Erm” I hesitated.
“Naturally for the benefit of the kingdoms…” Oh I’d had enough already, so I changed the subject.
“You like food right?” I said.
“I do” he looked confused.
“Then let’s go make something” I smiled, grabbing his hand and leading him to the kitchen. If I still had, what, an hour or so with him before I could go to Zain, I would at least have some fun.
“But, we can just get Jan to get us…” he said.
“NO! I want to make it, loosen up Joshua, besides Jan and Zain are busy” I smiled at him again, causing a small blush to form across his cheeks.
I pretty much dragged him to the kitchens, he wasn’t complaining, just hesitant to be the one who was going to be doing the cooking. I didn’t care. Me and Zain used the kitchen together all the time to bake. However, Joshua was brought up completely differently, he’d never set foot in a servants area unless it was to find Jan.
God bless Jan. He was a little angel who took a lot from his master, and yet never stopped smiling. I’d discovered that he originally was a spy from Nervan for Prince Leo, but it all turned out ok in the end. And that was the short version I had gotten last year. Things were still a little tense between the two countries but, nothing to be too worried about. Jan was forgiven and they both went right back to their original relationship. It was almost like Jan enjoyed being scolded by the prince. Meh, each to their own. I was just happy Jan bailed me out a lot of the boring activities. This time? He had training with Zain.
The kitchen was huge, of course it was, and it didn’t help I had no idea what to make. We both stood in the entrance for a good few seconds before Joshua broke the silence.
“You don’t know what to make, do you?” he asked.
“I so do, erm…rice balls!” I laughed when I saw a bag of rice. Simple enough for him to pick up, but fun to do. I let go of his hand and began pulling out some pans to start cooking the rice. Ah but what to put in them? Hmm. The fridge would tell us!  I gazed inside to see what meats I could use. Salmon would work…chicken…ew not venison…yeah that would do.
I happily trotted around gathering everything whilst Joshua stood there.
“Ok, rice is cooking, so let’s prepare the filling together, yeah?” I suggested.
“Sure, erm ok” he finally said, coming to stand next to me instead of leaning against a counter.
“Do you prefer Salmon or chicken?” I asked.
“To eat or?” he asked.
“Oh, you’ve never cooked before, ok, sorry I mean to prepare…slice and dicing…you do the salmon as it’s easier” I said.
I happily showed him how to cut the salmon safely and got him working in the herbs and spices to the fish.
“Is this what you did before you became a princess?” he asked.
“Hmm? Oh, make rice balls?”
“Cook”
“Oh, yeah, me and my parents would bake a lot together, was our fun time” I smiled. Joshua, however, almost frowned.
“Wonder what that was like” he said out loud.
Oh fuck. He didn’t grow up around his parents. I just stepped my foot in it with him. Joshua wasn’t a bad guy, sure he had high standards, lots of rules, but to be honest, he didn’t know any different. I guess a lot of the princes didn’t. I suddenly felt pretty bad. He didn’t know how much fun you could have with your parents just messing around with flour. The laughs, the sheer joy that you all shared together. Shit. What do I do? Quick Kia, think! I smirked when an idea popped into my head and chucked a piece of garlic at him.
“…what the hell?” he asked.
I laughed, tossing more food at him. He flinched and dodged, but quickly realised what I was doing, beginning to throw food back at me. I laughed harder when he finally joined it. We both ran round the kitchen, using the cabinets and table tops for cover, and he quickly grabbed the squirty cream from the fridge when he reached it.
“No, Joshua…oh my gosh no!” I laughed backing away.
“Oh yes, you started this” he grinned. He actually looked quite…handsome smiling naturally like that. You know, enjoying himself for once.
He lunged at me but missed me. We dodged, played and I hid with my own weapon, ketchup! Thank you ketchup Gods.
“Princess? Come on, I won’t hurt you” he chuckled, looking around.
“Maybe not, but I have ketchup now, so put your weapon down” I smirked from my hiding spot.
“Ketchup? Oh, that almost rivals mine, so I won’t back down” he stalked towards my voice. I heard his footsteps draw closer and closer. I readied the lid, hands braced for squirting. When I heard him close enough, I yelled as I stood, squeezing the bottle as hard as I could. He shouted in objection, but returned the favour with his cream. Damn, we were both covered, but neither of us cared. He lunged at me again, grabbing me and pulling me close.
“Have a taste!” he laughed, squirting the cream directly onto my face.
“Ah no!” I laughed harder until he finally stopped. I glanced up at him. He was very handsome, even covered in ketchup. If only he wasn’t such a stickler for the rules, I could easily for this man.
“Kia…” he said “the rice”
“Ah fuck yes!” I said, jumping up and pulling the rice off the hob.
“Jan is going to be so confused as to what just happened” he admitted.
“I think he’ll laugh when you explain” I said.
“I think he’ll be more confused” he said in reply.
“OH, wanna bet?” I asked.
“What do we bet?” he asked.
“Well, as long as it isn’t against the rules for you to bet, if I win, we do what I want to do tomorrow” I suggested.
“And if I win, I get to show you the library that holds every single law every made” he said. Ugh. Tough bet.
“You’re on!”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naturally, I won. Of course Jan laughed at what we had done. So I happily excused myself to go and plan for us tomorrow. It was also to find out what Zain and Roberto had found out.
With Roberto on loud speaker, Zain sat next to me on my bed.
“Not going to lie Kia, this was hard” Roberto said “but Zain did so well!”
“Thank you, your highness” Zain smiled “As he has already said, it was difficult, rumours can be extremely hard to trace, but thanks to Prince Roberto’s influence, we managed to track the source”
“Was I right?” I asked.
Zain simply nodded.
“Damn” Was all I could say.
“Reckon we could get Edward involved at this point?” Roberto asked.
“If I may” Zain asked “I think I have a slightly better plan that would be more beneficial”
“OH do tell us Zain” Roberto asked. I gestured for him to go ahead.
“It may be risky, but I think in the end, it may genuinely help Prince Edward to gain back more power, maybe even be the fall of the people in government”
Now THAT I was interested in.

word count: 4, 487
a/n: okay, so i know that this was requested, but i wanted to combine this with an idea i had earlier bc i was watching 12 dates of christmas and i’m a sucker okay enjoy this thing pls. i wrote this late and i’m running late i’m not checking this for errors ALSO HAPPY 2,000 FOLLOWERS TO ME WHAT
“Okay, so I already told her that we're doing movie night just the three of us, which means that the hard part is done. You know what to do, right?”
“You leave early because you forgot about some homework, and that's when I make my move.”
“Exactly, Da- Steve. You've got this. You're gonna slay her dead.”
Steve bit back the grin that was just dying to make itself known. It had been happening a lot recently, Dustin almost calling him dad. Sure, he teased the kid about it, but deep down, it made his heart warm. The kid needed someone in his life like that. Steve might have not been the best choice for that role, but he’d do his damndest to fill it.
“Just like you at the dance, son.” Steve’s smile couldn’t be held back at that point, and the corners of his mouth stretched wide as he started to laugh.
“Don’t make fun of me. My hair was killing it that night.”
Thinking about Dustin and his little adventure into using Farah Fawcett spray was entertaining. And it was definitely a hell of a lot easier to think about than the fact that he was going to make a move on the little shit’s sister that night.
It was kind of sad, really. Steve might have been off of his game a little after the whole Nancy fiasco, but when it came to you, it was like his game had decided to just fuck off entirely. He’d been getting better, but in tiny little increments. At least now he could hold a decent conversation with you. Before, he’d just stare at you and stutter. But he was over that, thank God.
“Whoa, Y/N. You’re looking nice for movie night,” Dustin said, not so subtly nudging Steve’s arm. Steve turned towards the doorway, eyes widening when he saw you. He wasn’t sure if he’d ever seen you look so pretty, a thought that he would’ve scoffed at a year ago. Your hair was falling in just the right way, your makeup simple but perfect. And the dress you were wearing… All he could do was stare.
“You - uh - you look - good. Nice. Yeah, good,” Steve stuttered out, ignoring the way the little dick sitting beside him snorted. Even that didn’t diminish the hope that was rising in his chest, though. Because you’d dressed up for him - or Dustin, but odds were looking into the older boy’s favor.
“Oh, thanks guys. But what do you mean movie night?” It was written across your face, confusion in its purest form. For a second, Steve’s heart dropped.
“Movie night, Y/N. You, me, and Steve? I told you about it a week ago,” he pushed, giving you a frown. You shook your head, staring at him blankly. Steve looked from you to Dustin, trying his hardest to not glare at the younger Henderson. But the longer he watched, the more Dustin’s face fell into a sheepish grin. “Or I might’ve told Mom that a week ago, and forgot to tell you.”
“Yeah, that’s probably it,” Steve muttered, rolling his eyes. He glanced over to you, a new train of thought running through his mind. “So, uh, you got a date or something tonight, Henderson?”
“Uh, yeah, I do.” A grin appeared on your lips almost instantly. “You know Dylan Marrow? He’s in your Bio class, I think.”
“You mean the football player?” He realized after he’d said it, how he’d practically sneered as he’d talked.
“Yes, the football player. Not everyone can be a basketball god like you, Harrington.” Normally, a compliment like that from you would’ve made Steve blush in an instant. Instead, he just nodded his head, his heart sinking with every passing second.
“I thought you weren’t dating anyone, though,” Dustin piped up.
“Well, nothing is official yet. But I think he’s going to ask me tonight.” A light flush was coloring your cheeks, and Steve wasn’t sure if the knife could sink any deeper into his chest. “Maybe we could do movie night tomorrow night? The three of us?” You smiled faintly at Steve. The knife twisted.
He must’ve given some affirmation, because the next thing he knew, you were grinning and saying goodbye, and running out the door. The second it slammed shut, Dustin turned to Steve.
“What a fucking loser. Who the hell even plays football?” The younger Henderson asked, frowning at Steve.
“Insult him all you want. You’re still not off the hook for that, dickhead.”
“Will I be off the hook if I use my allowance and buy you KFC?”
There was a pause.
“It’ll be a start.”
It wasn’t that Dylan Marrow was in the wrong. Like, yeah, you guys had gone out on a couple of dates and made out some and he’d meet you by your locker in between classes. But you hadn’t been official. He hadn’t come right out and asked you to be his girlfriend, so you couldn’t be that mad at him just because he’d shown up to the movies with another girl on his arm. And then proceeded to make out with that girl in front of you.
And then wink at you behind her back because he’s a fucking prick.
Okay, yeah, you definitely deserved to hate Dylan Marrow.
And Dylan Marrow deserved a swift kick to the groin.
You swung open the front door, letting out a frustrated sigh as a couple of tears slipped down your cheeks. You bit down on your lip, scowling. You weren’t going to cry over him. It was pathetic. You slammed the door behind you, staring at it for a moment before turning around.
Steve and Dustin stared at you, jaws open as their faces were illuminated by the blinking lights on the TV.
“What’re you guys watching?” Your voice came out scratchy, rough from yelling for about ten minutes, roughly the time it took you to drive from the movie theater to your house.
“Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back. You want to watch?” Dustin asked, his voice much more gentle than it usually was.
“Yeah, gimme a minute.” Dustin hopped up to the VHS player, jamming his finger onto the pause button as he glanced to Steve. You ignored the look and headed back to your room. Comfy pajamas and some hot chocolate wouldn’t automatically fix how you felt, but it was something. And by that point, something was better than nothing.
Within a couple of minutes, you were padding back into the living room, clad in your comfiest pajamas while the milk was heating up on the stove. Dustin patted the spot in the middle and you fell onto the couch easily.
“You alright?” Steve asked, his voice soft enough that Dustin wouldn’t overhear - too occupied with Luke’s Dagobah dream sequence happening.
“No.” You’d been expecting Steve to pester you about why your eyes were red or why you looked similar to when Mews had disappeared. But instead, he just reached over and tapped this thumb against your hand. It wasn’t much, but for whatever reason, it was comforting. Nice, even.
The three of you sat there for awhile, watching as the young Skywalker struggled with his choices. It was hard for you to focus on your favorite movie, and it seemed like Steve was having the same issues. You glanced down at Dustin, who was snoring softly on your shoulder. You glanced over to Steve, who was watching the two of you with a faint smile on his face.
“Thanks for looking out for him. He really looks up to you,” you said, mustering up a weak smile of your own.
“He’s a cool kid.” His smile continued on for a moment before he winced.
“You alright?”
“Yeah, just hit my head at practice.”
“How the hell do you still have practice? We’re on Christmas break.”
“Coach is a hard ass and Billy got the entire team in trouble because he wouldn’t stop running his mouth.”
“How does that translate to everyone getting in trouble? Aren’t you like the golden boy? You should be immune to Hargrove’s stupidity.” Steve laughed at that, and the sound made your chest lighten up a little. Not by much, but it was something.
“You’ve never played on a team sport, have you?” The way he said it was as though he knew something that you didn’t. His eyes were crinkling a little at the corners, his grin bright and happy.
“No, I never needed other people to do my work for me. I could make baskets on my own, thank you very much,” you chuckled, noting the way his lips stretched even wider (if that was possible). For a moment, you wondered what it would be like, for you and Steve to be more than friends. But Steve is Steve and you are you, which meant that the two of you were firmly stuck in wonderful, meaningful, platonic friendship.
That didn’t stop you from wondering about it, though.
As the night went on, you found yourself leaning a little more on Steve, relishing in the warmth and comfort. By the end of Return of the Jedi, the three of you were fast asleep on the couch in a giant huddle, safe and sound from the problems of the galaxy.
When Steve woke up, however, the problems of the galaxy were staring down at him.
“Get the fuck up, Harrington. I don’t wanna have to be here any longer,” Billy spat, scowling down at him. Steve’s eyes blinked languid, up and down, almost lazy as he tried to comprehend just what the fuck was going on.
They wouldn’t have had practice two days in a row on Christmas break. And he’d just had practice yesterday. And it was Christmas Eve, anyway. So there definitely wouldn’t have been practice. But Billy was staring down at him still, face twisted into a snarl as he waited for Steve to move.
Slowly, he got up, rubbing his hand over the spot on his head that was throbbing.
“What happened?” He mumbled, wincing at the pain. The guys crowded around him, all craning their heads to see if there was any blood.
“You didn’t plant your feet, dumbass,” Billy said. His voice was low enough so that their coach wouldn’t hear him, but something in his tone struck Steve as familiar. Almost too familiar, like he’d heard it before.
(His brain kept supplying the phrase yesterday, but he refused to accept it.)
The rest of the day didn’t get any better. The clothes he’d worn yesterday were the same. The time that he got out of practice was the exact same. Dustin answered the door in the same clothes as yesterday, babbling on about their plan. The. Same. As. Yesterday.
It was when you came out in the same clothes as yesterday that he finally snapped.
“Haven’t you worn that recently?” He asked, an edge to his voice. You stared at him, your jaw ticking just a little.
“What, are you suddenly the fashion police? I’m pretty sure that I’m allowed to wear the same dress within a month, Steve.”
“Yeah, well, where are you going?” His volume was getting a little louder, but he wasn’t paying too much attention. He wasn’t paying too much attention to Dustin either, who was gaping at him and jabbing his finger into the older teen’s side, or the way that you were glaring at him like you wanted to hit him.
“On a date. With Dylan Marrow.”
“Jesus, are you serious? Didn’t you come back last night from your date with him crying?”
“What the fuck are you talking about?”
“You! Last night was movie night here and you went out on a date with him dressed like that and then you come back crying, most likely because of him. You can’t be seriously going out with him again.” You just stared at him, tilting your head the same way a dog does when it can’t understand what it’s being told. But there was something else there too, something that was making your nostrils flare and your eyes narrow.
“Look, I don’t know what your problem is, but I have no idea what you’re talking about, okay, Steve? Maybe you hit your head too hard, hm?”
“Maybe I - or maybe you’re not thinking clearly, hm?” Deep down, Steve knew that it was really him that wasn’t thinking clearly. His heart was pounding and his brain was firing off too many thoughts for him to handle all at once. “We all know that Dylan Marrow is a fucker who can’t think beyond the end of his dick, and who it’s pointing at.”
“Just fuck off, Harrington.” With that, you slammed the door behind you, making the picture frames that were hanging on the wall shake.
“When did you hit your head?” Steve stared at him, not even comprehending what he was saying.
“What? Earlier, man. Just… At basketball practice. It doesn’t - fuck,” Steve eventually burst out, letting his head fall back against the couch. He let out a groan at the moment of impact, his head still sore from earlier. Or yesterday.
He really didn’t fucking know at that point.
“So are we going to talk about you losing your sanity, or should I pretend that it didn’t happen?”
“Just start the fucking movie, Dustin.”
You were crying when you got home, tears leaving wet tracks down your cheeks. Once you were inside, your gaze settled on Steve, something in your chest tightening up.
“Congratulations, Harrington. You were fucking right.” The words were brittle and hard, and only became harder when you slammed your bedroom door shut for the night.
Steve wished that things would get better from then on out.
They didn’t.
He lost track of how many times the day repeated itself. His headache was growing worse with each repetition, and no matter what he tried, nothing would get him out of the loop. One day, he punched Hargrove right in the mouth upon waking up. That had launched a series of events where he’d ended up stuck in Hopper’s office, handcuffed to the desk. Another time, he’d cancelled on Dustin and stayed home, hiding in his bedroom.
Most days, though, he’d end up at your house, sitting on your couch with your little brother. He’d tried talking you out of your date a hundred different times, but nothing seemed to work. You were always determined to go on that date of yours, despite Steve’s almost desperate attempts. He’d tried just about anything he could think of, but you still went on your date.
He and Dustin still watched Star Wars.
You came back crying.
And repeat.
Over and over again, Steve was stuck in the loop, always December 23, never Christmas fucking Eve. At around day fifty-seven (he’d still been counting then), he’d started to feel this overwhelming sense of loneliness. Everyone else believed that it was December 23, just a normal day in Hawkins. But he was stuck, alone even when surrounded by other people. His chest had started to hurt that day. Around day seventy-four, the pain in his chest faded into a numbness.
After day seventy-seven, he decided to stop counting. There wasn’t really a point when nothing was changing.
Until something did change.
Steve found himself once more stuck on the couch, head lolled against the back as he waited for the inevitable. Dustin was going on about the plan, the one that they’d been planning for over a week - to Dustin, anyway.
“Exactly, Da- Steve. You've got this. You're gonna slay her dead.”
Steve mustered up a small grin at that. That was his favorite part of the loop. For a moment, he could focus on Dustin and how he felt instead of the crushing loneliness that had made its home in his chest.
“Slay who dead?”
“No one!” Dustin said, tripping over the two words as he dug his elbow into Steve’s side. Steve reached over for the VHS box, gaze flipping over the text. He didn’t need to look over to you. He’d had your outfit memorized from day four.
“Right, okay,” you paused for a moment. “So what movies are we watching?”
The six words made Steve’s entire being stop. His breath caught in his throat as his heart began to pound hard and fast. He looked over to you, slow and almost scared at what awaited him. But there you stood, clad in a pair of jeans and a sweater, your lips pressed together into a grin as you watched him.
“Uh, Star Wars marathon. I got all the tapes as an early Christmas gift from my parents,” Steve said. His voice sounded far away, but that was most likely due to the way his pulse was roaring in his ears.
“Oh, nice. Are we starting with A New Hope?”
“Is there any other way?” Dustin asked, rolling his eyes at the obviously stupid question. You motioned for Steve to scoot over so there was room. His heart was still pounding in his chest, amplifying when you sat down next to him.
“You alright there, Harrington?” You asked. There was something to your voice, something a little off that pricked at the back of his mind.
“Uh, yeah. I’m dandy, Y/N.”
Steve remained dandy all throughout the first movie. His composure cracked, however, the second it ended.
“Y/N, you wanna make some hot chocolate with me?” His voice was shaking just a little as he asked, hands doing the same. You looked between him and Dustin before nodding.
“Sure, Steve.” You glanced over to Dustin, quirking a brow at him, but he just shrugged his shoulders and grinned. Steve watched as you headed out into the kitchen, looking to Dustin only when he grabbed onto his arm.
“Dude! You were supposed to wait until I went to bed!”
“Then go to bed, man. I’ve got to ask her something - not like that, you little shit. Stop looking at me like that.”
“You treat her right, Harrington. I’m not fucking around. Just because you’re my dad, that doesn’t mean I won’t kill you if you hurt her.”
“Dustin, I promise you, as a symbolic father to my symbolic son, I am not going to hurt her. I swear it to you, okay?”
“Geas.”
“What?”
“Geas. DnD, what we were talking about last week? Where you get damage every day that you don’t follow whatever quest you’re supposed to be on? You hurt her, and I will damage you every day.” Steve just stared at him. A part of him was enjoying this side of Dustin, one that was stepping up and protecting his sister. Another part of him wanted the kid to stop so he could talk to you.
“Fine, Geas, I agree. Now go to bed.” Without waiting another minute, Steve strode into the kitchen, stopping at the sight of you making hot chocolate. “Uh, so, uh…”
“How many days?” Your words came out quiet and wobbly. It reminded Steve of when he’d had to tell you that Mews had disappeared. Dustin had been adamant about protecting you from the truth, but apparently couldn’t have been the one to lie straight to your face.
“What?”
“Just answer the question.” You weren’t looking at him then, instead focused on the milk that was starting to bubble.
“I don’t know. I stopped after seventy-seven.” He watched as your shoulders relaxed, although he would have described them as deflating.
“One hundred and thirty-three days.” Your words were wobbly and choked off. It caused something in Steve to break, and he made it across the kitchen in three steps, resting a hand on your shoulder. “I didn’t - I didn’t know what was going on. Every single time I came out into that living room, you were just there.”
“I said different stuff, though.”
“Yeah, but I’d do one thing different in the morning, and it’d have a giant ripple effect for the rest of the day. I just… I assumed that you were apart of that.”
“So what changed?” His hand felt warm against your shoulder, and his breath caught again that night as you leaned into his touch.
“When you looked at me. You looked surprised that I wasn’t dressed up.” Steve let out a low laugh, shaking his head as he watched you.
“You mind me asking why you kept going?”
“At first, I thought that I was supposed to change it somehow, that I was supposed to stop him and win him back or whatever bullshit. And then, when that never changed, I tried calling him out on it. And that didn’t change, so I started just going out by myself, like maybe I was supposed to learn how to be by myself. But tonight, I honestly just wanted to hang out with you guys,” you said, shrugging.
“Then let’s hang out. You wanna start Empire?”
You’d honestly thought that things would change after that, that the two of you would wake up the next morning, cuddled on the couch and it would all be over. But it wasn’t. Instead, it just kept going and going and going.
This time around, though, you had each other.
You learned some things, too. That you woke up in your bed, but Steve woke up at basketball practice, which was five hours after you woke up. No matter how hard you tried, you could never find Steve before then.
You also learned that Steve was a cuddler. With every day that passed, the more comfortable the two of you got. He’d lean against your shoulder, rest a hand on the small of your back, tug on your hair until you’d lean into his side. He’d tell you stupid jokes, repeating the punchline over and over and over again until you’d break down and laugh. When you’d fall asleep against his shoulder - which had turned into an every night kind of thing - he’d press kisses against your hair when he thought you were sleeping.
You’d learned that your heart beat a little faster every time you saw him. That you couldn’t help but grin when he did, and that his laugh was one of your new favorite things. You learned that your fingers itched to hold his hand or to rake through his hair. You learned that home was quickly becoming anywhere that he was. You learned that you liked him.
You’d learned a lot over the past thirty-two days. You’d started a new count, as well.
“Exactly, Da- Steve. You've got this. You're gonna slay her dead.”
“Slay who dead?” Your voice brought a grin to Steve’s lips, and the sight of it made your heart swell.
“No one!” Dustin yelped, eyes wide as he dug his elbow into Steve’s side. You couldn’t help but smile.
The night passed as it usually did, with Dustin making his exit after Episode V. You and Steve settled against each other after he put in a new movie, something other than Star Wars. You watched it in silence for awhile, letting Indiana Jones and Short Round distract you for a bit. It was difficult, though, when Steve kept rubbing random shapes onto your palm.
“So when are you going to kiss me?”
The words came out, casual and slow. You turned your head to Steve, swallowing as you watched him. He was still facing the TV, but you could see him looking at you out of the corner of his eye. A smirk had perched itself on his lips, making itself right at home.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“I - You - We - What?” You just gaped at him like a fish out of water.
“If you kiss me and it sucks, it’ll be fine. Everything resets, anyway.”
“You and I don’t, though.” His smirk slid away as he turned to face you properly. A serious look settled onto his features, one that made your heart stop.
“Yeah, you and I don’t.” He repeated your words, watching you for what felt like an eternity before moving forward. It was odd. In the brief moment before his lips were on yours, it was simultaneously a millenia and a millisecond. But those thoughts slid away once he was actually kissing you.
His hands were cupping your cheeks, careful, as though you were made of glass. You inched closer to him, knees bumping against his as you let a hand rest against his chest. It felt like he was breathing the life back into you. With every move of his lips, every breath and every pant, he was awakening the parts of you that had been asleep, that had fallen asleep long before you’d realized that you weren’t alone in whatever this was.
Before long, the both of you had maneuvered to a more horizontal position on the couch. You were taking your time with these kisses, soft and lazy and tired. You pressed a kiss against his jaw, sighing as you tucked your head beneath his chin.
“What are we going to do? If we’re stuck like this?” Your words rang out in the quiet of the room. Indiana Jones was still going through the motions of being the hero, but neither of you were paying that much attention.
“I don’t know.” Steve paused for a moment. “I mean, I guess there are worse people to be stuck with for eternity, you know?” You let out a soft laugh, nuzzling your face into his neck. “Whatever happens, though, we’ll face it together.”
You were colder than you usually were whenever you were waking up. In your sleep addled mind, you chalked it up to kicking your blanket off of you at sometime during the night. But whenever you reached for it, your hand immediately hit something hard, eyes opening in a flash.
“Watch it, babe,” Steve mumbled, pressing his face deeper into the couch cushion. You froze at the sound, your fingers gripping his arm tight. It took him a couple of seconds longer, but his eyes flung open.
Neither of you could breathe, it was so hard to wrap your minds around it.
“Jesus, are you two… doing things on the couch? I’m going to have to bleach those cushions for hours! Or powerwash them! Or both!” Dustin said, grabbing a pillow off of the recliner and tossing it at the two of you.
“Dustin, knock it off!” You said, but the annoyance that would’ve painted your tone was gone. Instead, it was all you could do from sounding downright giddy. You tilted your head up to get a better look at Steve. He grinned down at you, his whole expression radiating joy. “We made it. We did it.”
“We did it,” he echoed, pressing a kiss to your forehead. “We really did it.”

Chapter Two: "Unexpected Seriousness" [link to FF]
Penelope stared at the laptop screen in front of her. It has been exactly two hours since she arrived to work and she has done nothing by run copies for people around the floor. Checking the time on her watch, there's another forty minutes until Derek arrives for work. Only a week has gone by since she started working in Delicate and the one thing she is mostly curious about is why Derek Morgan always starts work two and a half hours later than everybody else in the company. Penelope hasn't exactly made friends to ask questions. What she has collected so far about the people on this floor is the fact that there isn't no funny business. Most of the employees are either running their own meetings about certain projects and the others are rushing to the bakery side of the building to run some ideas with bakers. One of the most frustrating part of this secretary job is the fact that she has yet to set foot inside the bakery side of the building. For just a second, she would love to see the behind the scenes action of the huge bakery. It would be such a big learning experience for her. Her eyes glanced away from the laptop screen once she heard the echoing sound of Lynda's high heels on the floorboard.
From what she understood from the guidebook that was given to her, Delicate Bakery & Co has exactly twenty-two floors. Each floor has one main assistant and a team leader for each department. Located in the first floor is the reception area. The second to third floor belongs solely to the bakery. The fourth to sixth floor is the Marketing Department with Team Leader Tara Lewis and her own assistant. The seventh to ninth floor is the Human Resources Department with team Leader Stephen Walker and his own assistant. It goes on and on with the same kind of pattern with the exception for the 20th floor to the 22nd floor. For those three floors, it belongs to three different team leaders that take charge of the bakery decision for the company. Spencer Reid's office is located on the 20th, Jennifer Jareau's office is located on the 21st and the 22nd's floor which is considered as the top floor - belongs to Derek Morgan and the CEO, Luke Alvez. With what she can gather from her short time here so far, the 22nd floor is the floor employees avoid the most. Unless it's really needed, no one dares to push the button for this floor in the elevator. Penelope blinked her eyes as soon as she heard the elevators open. Thinking that it was Derek, Penelope stood up to greet him but she paused once she saw Luke Alvez exiting out of the elevator. He slightly paused his steps as soon as he noticed Penelope but quickly ignored her as he walked toward his office. And the sole reason behind the fear and avoidance by people for this exact floor is due to Luke Alvez. Surprisingly, not much people like him and it's as if he knows it too and just doesn't care.
"Penelope," Jennifer Jareau walked over with a folder in her hand as she looked at her. "When Team Leader Derek Morgan comes in for work, hand this folder for him. Tell him it's the new updated details I have for our spring season project."
Penelope nodded her head. "Yes, Ma'am."
Jennifer arched an eyebrow at her. "Don't call me that. Jennifer is fine." Without another word, she turned around and headed toward the stairs. After staring at Jennifer for a week, Penelope has learned that she doesn't like using the elevator. Besides being a world champion baker with tons of gold medal, she is also a fitness maniac. If there is a way for her to input some fitness into her work hours, she'll take it.
The elevator doors opened just in time with Derek Morgan exiting with sunglasses still on. "Uh, this is from Team Leader Jennifer Jareau. She said it's about the spring season project."
Derek took the folder out of her hands and briefly smiled. "I'll be in my office. If I need anything, I'll just call you up."
"So," Penelope knit her eyebrows. "There's nothing for me to do? Again?" She doesn't get it. Does he doesn't trust her with some of his work? All she has been doing is running copies or read through the pages for the guidebook. Anything involving the actual person that she has to help, there is nothing.
Noticing the kind of tone she was using, Derek chuckled as he crossed his arms and leaned against his office door. "You're upset."
"What?" Penelope cleared her throat. "Why would I be upset toward a team leader?"
Derek lets out a small laugh before he opened the door and indicated his hand for Penelope to follow him inside. As soon as he was settled in his seat, he pointed toward the chair across from him for her to sit. "Here's the thing about me that you have to understand, Penelope. Unless there is something that I truly need help on, I don't call anyone for guidance. In the kind of situation and project I have going on that's under the watchful eyes of CEO Alvez, I am under a lot of pressure. With the kind of pressure I am facing, I like to be alone and diligent in my own work."
"You're working with Team Leader Jennifer." Penelope pointed out.
He arched an eyebrow. "She has been my partner for the last two years in this company. I feel comfortable around her when I work on things." He folded his hands onto the desk and smiled. "It has nothing to do with you or the mere fact that I don't trust you. The position you work as for this company as we speak is secretary. You're not my assistant. I know you've noticed that every team leader has one with the exception of me. The reasoning behind that is due to the fact again, I like being alone." He turned to his laptop screen, quickly typing in the password. "I read your resume."
Penelope blinked in surprise. "You did?"
"For a twenty-seven year old, your resume seems a bit lacking." Derek straightforwardly said.
"Ah," Penelope shut her eyes for a brief second. She knew it would come back and bit her in the butt for being so lacking. "The situation is that - "
Derek chuckled. "I don't need you to share your life story with me, Penelope." Opening the second drawer to his left, he took out her resume. "The one information I noticed here is that you actually attended and graduated Seamless Bakery School with high honors." She briefly smiled and nodded her head as a response. "And if I am reading this correctly, the position you actually applied for here is an intern. I'm sure Lynda already explained how the internship works in this company but why is a twenty-seven year old working as an intern when she graduated six years ago?"
"I had a late start on things after I graduated." Penelope explained. She clenched her hands together, practically feeling her nails digging into her skin. "It's better late than never, right?"
He nodded his head as he placed the resume back inside the drawer. "I was going to ignore what happened last week on your first day of work because it may be extremely uncomfortable for you. But if I want a better understand with my secretary, I have to at least know a bit." From his office windows, he watched as Lynda and Luke walked past and entering the elevators. "Luke Alvez also graduated from the same school in the same year."
"Oh." Penelope simply said.
"I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the both of you know each other," Derek stated. "And I'm going to test my luck again and say that the history that you both have aren't exactly considered as memorable or good." Penelope didn't know what to say. She doesn't want the fact that she had a relationship with the CEO of the company to affect how people look at her.
"Team Leader, if I can overstep - "
Derek smiled. "Look, like I said, it's not that I don't trust you or anything. I just really don't have work right now that could have your help. The only thing I can say is if I have clients calling me or people looking for me, I only ask for you to inform them that I am busy working on the spring season project." He shrugged his shoulders as he opened the folder that Jennifer gave him. "I can understand where you're coming from. Working in a position that you don't know about when your talent belongs elsewhere is hard. The baker inside of you is screaming out, demanding to actually work with your hands and create things that can bring joy to someone else's life. Trust me when I say, I've been there." Derek skimmed through the pages as he spoke to her. "Just have patience and your day will come." He looked at her one last time before going back to the folder. "Sometimes in a company like this, doing nothing is definitely better."
Penelope nodded her head. "Thanks."
. . .
Luke crossed his arms as he watched the bakers discuss over the specials for the new week. He extremely hate Mondays for purely this reason. It's as if no one has their mind ready for this day. Adverting his attention over to the display cases, he scanned through all the bakery goods that were there. "Where are the cream puffs?"
Jennifer tied her hair into a ponytail as she answered. "We didn't have time this morning to make them."
"I'm sorry," Luke said. "You didn't have time to make them?"
"The thing is," Grant Anderson, one of the bakers for Delicate, cleared his throat as he stepped forward. "We were busy taking in orders for one of our regular customers. They have placed an order for over 450 macaroons by tomorrow afternoon. We were busy making the batter for the order and lost track of time."
Luke looked at all of the bakers. "So basically, none of you assigned the cream puffs to one person? You just thought that maybe today we can go forward without the cream puffs on display?" He adverted his attention over to Jennifer. "I expected something as forgetful as this from basic people but you? Team Leader Jennifer, I expect more from you."
Jennifer had to keep herself from rolling her eyes as she put on her baker uniform on. "I was a bit busy focusing on the spring season project this morning. I didn't know about the cream puffs until briefly." She glanced over at the other bakers, who had sullen expressions on their faces. "I don't think keeping themselves in order to make a customer's orders that wrong. Would you rather go on a day without cream puffs or lose a valuable customers that gives us bigger profits?"
Lynda, who always stands in the back, widened her eyes by the sudden remark by Jennifer. Besides Derek, no one else in this company ever dares to speak back to Luke. Is Jennifer on drugs this morning or what? "Sir, we have a conference call with London in five minutes."
"What about the macaroons? Have you finished making them?" Luke questioned.
"No," Grant replied. "We put it on hold since today is going to be busy with the event that we're being assigned with Team Leader Jennifer."
Jennifer checked the time on the clock. "As you know, there is a wedding event that the bakers and I have to attend to." She stared at Luke and briefly smiled. "Mayor Strauss's wedding, your good friend."
Luke sighed. "Go on." Without another word, he walked out of the kitchen and halted his steps at the bakery, staring at all the customers who were waiting in line for their orders. "Tell Team Leader Tara Lewis that I want the monthly rate for this month."
Writing it on her notes, Lynda nodded her head. "Yes, Sir." She followed Luke into the elevators and leaned against the wall as the elevator continues to go up. Deciding to test his patience, she leaned over and looked at him. "The cream puffs, what do you want me to do about it?"
"What do you mean?" He furrowed his eyebrows together as he narrowed his eyes at her. "Do you bake?"
"No..."
"Then what the heck are you able to do about the cream puffs?" Luke turned his attention back toward the elevator doors as it opened. Stepping out, he lets out a scoff. "Don't ask such a useless question like that ever again."
Lynda halted her steps and let him walk into his office on his own. As soon as the coast was clear, she kicked her legs up in the air as she imagined kicking his butt in her mind. "You don't have to be a jerk about it!" Turning around, she looked at Penelope. "I hate my job."
Penelope could only show a small smile. "What was that about?"
"Let's just say that Mondays aren't exactly CEO Alvez's favorite kind of day." Lynda sighed. "You know what's funny? For the four years since the grand opening of Delicate, I haven't seen him lay a single hand in the kitchen. He keeps complaining about the bakers downstairs when they don't do their job properly but what about him? Does he even know how to bake? How is he even the CEO when I haven't seen him do anything besides scold employees for three years."
"I wouldn't know those answers since it's only been a week since I started working here." Penelope answered. "I don't even know him."
Lynda sighed. "You're lucky."
Penelope watched in silence as Lynda headed toward the break room to probably make Luke's coffee. The question from earlier is now constantly ringing in her head. Does he even know how to bake? She stared blankly at the laptop screen as a memory came rushing back.
Luke's Apartment, 8 and a half years ago.
"Add in the two eggs to the mixture and stir," Penelope instructed him. "Make sure you don't get any egg shells in it."
Luke looked at her. "You act as if I don't know how to crack an egg." He wiggled his eyebrows as he took out an egg from the fridge but halted his steps when one of the eggs dropped onto the floor. "Alright, that's my bad."
Penelope laughed. "You have to focus when you bake, Luke."
"I am!" Luke said. "Your beauty is just too dazzling that I am getting clumsy. You made me drop an egg!"
She made a disgusted face at the flattery before she slapped his arm playfully. "Stop it. How are you going to pass the baking exam if you can't bake a simple white cake." She walked over to the fridge to grab another egg. "Come on, you have to focus in order for this cake to be perfected." Penelope glared at him.
"We're not going to sleep until you make the perfect white cake."
Luke arched an eyebrow. "So, you're staying for the night?"
Penelope slapped him on the arm again. "No." She cracked one of the eggs and added it into the mixture. "I have my own exam to worry about. Unlike you, I have two written exams and an actual baking exam to do. You only have to bake a white cake and you'll pass third year in baking school. I have to bake macaroons and - "
He sighed. "You're right," Unlike his other peers, the fact that he only has to bake a white cake to pass third year is a bit weird. Maybe it's due to the fact that he was supposed to have that done by second year. Or is it a trick? What if as soon as he passes this baking exam, every single thing that he missed about other baking techniques and bakery goods will bombard him next year? Does that mean he has to work extra hard since he has more things to study up and test on? "Staying back another year really is doing damages to me."
Penelope smiled. "At least you're learning and improving now."
Luke cracked the other egg and started mixing it when he noticed an small piece of egg shell in the bowl. "Damn it."
"Here, use a spoon and - " Penelope's eyes widened when Luke started searching for the egg shell with his hand. "Luke!" She was too shock to even speak. Instead, she started laughing hysterically at how cute Luke was being. The focus and attention in his eyes that he has for the egg shell is something she has never seen from him. "Why are you being so serious about the egg shell?!"
Blinking his eyes as he successfully took out the egg shell, he turned and looked at Penelope. "You said that I won't be able to sleep until I get it perfectly done!"
"Yeah but," Penelope clenched onto her stomach once it started hurting because she is laughing too hard. "I've never seen you so serious in my life!"
“You've only known me for two months." Luke corrected her as he concentrated on mixing the bowl. "And I can be serious and mean when I want to be, Penelope"
Penelope stopped laughing and silently rolled her eyes. "Luke Alvez, you're the most happiest and positive person I know." She leaned against the kitchen counter. "As behind as you are in baking, I think everybody in the school can agree that you're the one that makes them laugh the most. You have this aura around you, Luke. People can't help but love having you around them."
Luke stopped mixing and stared at her. "What about you?"
"What about me?"
"Do you love having me around?" Luke carefully repeated himself. Since the day they met each other in the hallways, they were inseparable. For two months, Penelope has been teaching him everything that he missed, letting him gain confidence in his own baking. There wasn't a single day where they were apart for some reason. "Never mind, don't answer that." Luke adverted his attention over to the mixture and cleared his throat. "So, what do I do now?"
Penelope scratched the back of her neck out of awkwardness. "Uh, take out the tins and pour the mixture inside. The oven has already been preheated so once you finished pouring, just put it in the oven."
After doing what Penelope instructed, Luke backed away from the oven and leaned against the wall. "So," checking the time on his watch, he exhaled deeply. "You can leave since you have a long night ahead for you. I mean, if the cake doesn't end up being edible, I'll just redo everything until I do it right."
"Are you sure?" Luke nodded his head and handed her the car keys and her jacket. "Alright. I'll see you tomorrow then."
Luke smiled. "Of course. Let me walk you out the door."
Penelope followed behind him. As the front door opened, she stepped out and turned around. "Have confidence in yourself. I know I laughed about it but it's not a bad thing to be serious sometimes. As happy as you are, I know you'll be happier once you graduate from baking school with the rest of us. You taught me to be happy and pause to have a laugh, I'm just returning the favor with this advance."
He chuckled as he held onto the doorknob. "You're right."
"Alright," she slowly puts on her jacket and waved goodbye. "Bye."
Luke watched as she started walking away. He clenched onto the doorknob even tighter as she becomes further away from him. Taking a deep breath, he is just going to go for it. "Penelope!"
She turned around and looked at him. "Yeah?"
"I have something to say," walking out of his apartment, he slowly paced himself towards her. "There's something that I've been meaning to tell you. I've been on the edge lately because of it." Luke looked into her eyes, it was one of the first things he noticed about her from that day in the hallways - they're so beautiful. "Penelope, I - " his eyes widened from surprise when Penelope leaned forward and softly kissed him.
Present Time
"Penelope," Derek leaned against the doorway from his office as he held out the folder in his hand. "Jennifer is leaving in ten minutes. I need you to show her the new updated information I have before she goes. I need to know what she thinks so I can get started on the project."
"Okay, do you know where she is?" Penelope asked as she stood up. Derek checked the time on his watch. "Now? She should be in the kitchen downstairs where the bakery is." As soon as Penelope took the folder, he smiled. "Don't say that I never gave you work."
Penelope softly smiled at his comment. "I'll be back." Walking toward the elevator, she quickly got in and pressed the first floor button. That's when the realization hit her. She's about to actually enter the kitchen of the bakery. An even bigger smile plastered on her face as she did a little dance in the elevator. She has always imagined at how big the kitchen would be for a huge company like Delicate. Are there over 20-30 bakers in one kitchen? If the bakery is really connected to three floors, does that mean there's a kitchen on each floor? Once the elevator opened, she rushed out because the curiosity is seriously killing her. Pacing herself so she doesn't look like a crazy woman, she walked into the bakery and straight toward the kitchen. "Ma'am - " she paused and remembered what Jennifer had said earlier. "Jennifer..."
Jennifer carefully took off her baker uniform and stared at Penelope. "What are you doing in here?"
"Derek wanted you to take a look at the updated information before he starts on the project." Penelope handed over the folder and quickly scanned the kitchen. She's in complete awe. This kitchen is as huge as a garden. It's almost too ridiculous to be true. The utensils, the tables, the ingredients - they're all so clean and shiny. She was about to touch the closest thing near her when Jennifer handed back the folder. "You're done looking over it?"
"Tell him that he needs to make that cake before Luke starts asking about it." Jennifer quickly puts on her jacket. "I have a wedding to take care of. See you around, Penelope."
Penelope watched as Jennifer and two other bakers walk out of the kitchen. She counted to one minute in her head before she start running around the kitchen. "Oh my God," she couldn't believe that she's actually inside a Delicate kitchen. "State of the art oven." She muttered to herself happily. Noticing a piece of paper on the middle of the gigantic table, she knows that she shouldn't look at it but one peek wouldn't hurt.
450 macaroons orders for Lillian's Bridal Shower. Batter is all set but will start making them tonight when we come back.
"450?!" Penelope gasped in shock. "How are they only going to start tonight? An order like this takes half a day."
"What are you doing in here?" Penelope jumped in surprise as she made eye contact with Luke. "I said, what are you doing in here?"
Penelope cleared her throat. "Derek wanted Jennifer to check on some information for the spring season project and I was here because she needed to check it off before he starts - "
"I don't see team leader Jennifer Jareau in here." Luke pointed out.
"That's because she just left and - "
Luke opened the kitchen door and sighed. "If she isn't here anymore, you shouldn't either."
Penelope doesn't even want to talk to him any longer. As she walked out of the kitchen, the door swiftly closed behind her. Leaving her speechless at how rude he has become, she rolled her eyes. "Six years does change people." Taking a look at her watch, she halted her steps and glanced back toward the kitchen. "It's only the afternoon, why would he be in the kitchen?"
. . .
Derek smirked at the little note that Jennifer had written for him inside the folder. "Thanks, Penelope."
Penelope nodded her head and watched as he started walking out of his office. Taking it as he is going to go off and do the project, she settled in her seat and sighed. "Wow, Penelope. You've been here for four hours now and you managed to complete two errands." She groaned to herself as she tapped her fingers on the desk. "Only five more hours to go."
. . .
"I told you that it would work," Derek said through the phone as he cleaned up the mess he made in the break room. "Jennifer, I just spent six hours in a break room, testing out flavors. It's going to work, trust me."
Jennifer yawned as she put the keys through the hole. "It better work. Hey, the wedding was pretty cute."
"A wedding is a wedding." Derek said as he cleaned his hands in the sink. Jennifer rolled her eyes. "Why do men think like that?"
"Why do women always want to spend tons of money toward one event?"
"A life changing event," Jennifer corrected him. Collapsing onto her couch, she yawned again. "It's late. Why are you still there anyways?"
Derek walked out of the break room and looked around through the darkness of the floor. "Do you honestly believe I want to be here this late? I lost track of time." He started walking past the secretary desk when he noticed Penelope there, asleep. "JJ, I'll call you back." Hanging up the phone, he furrowed his eyebrows together in confusion as he leaned forward to get a closer look of her. With his arm propped on the desk, he carefully look at her face. A smile spread across his face when he noticed the little post it note near her hand. Taking it off, he silently chuckled at what it said.
Sleep for only thirty minutes. Wake up and ask around if anyone needs copies. And ease on the staring at Derek, you wouldn't want him to think you're crazy. Also, try and sneak back into the kitchen and gather some baking inspiration from the aura inside there.
"You're one interesting woman, Penelope Garcia." Derek said softly before placing the post it note back where it originally was. Walking into his office, he grabbed his jacket and car keys before walking back over to the secretary desk. "Penelope."
Opening her eyes to the sound of her name, Penelope sat up in her seat and blinked her eyes in confusion to find herself surrounded in darkness. "Why is it so dark?"
Derek laughed. "Maybe it's because it's past nine."
"What?!" Penelope checked her phone to see a missing call from Jensen's daycare. "Oh God!"
"Do you have to rush somewhere?"
Penelope quickly grabbed her own jacket and car keys. "I have to pick up my - " she paused and looked at him. What's the point? Someone's bound to find out sooner enough. "My son. The good thing is that I already worked out the hours with the daycare and I'm not going to be too late to pick him up."
"Son?" Derek didn't expect that. "How old is he?"
"Six." Penelope smiled as they both entered the elevator. "Does everybody usually leave work at nine?" She stared at the buttons from 1-22. "Like the whole building?"
Derek nodded his head. "Yeah. I usually leave at eight but I lost track of time."
He glanced at her and chuckled. "You obviously also lost track of time."
Penelope cleared her throat. "Sorry. My son had a nightmare last night so I barely got any sleep. I won't do it again, I promise."
"Don't worry about it. I'm not the one that signs your paycheck, I could careless."
Derek laughed as he walked out the elevator. "Unless it's when you're doing something for me like a project," he halted his steps and looked at her. "Such as the current spring season project."
She smiled. "You're saying as if you're letting me," Penelope gasped and covered her mouth in shock. "Really?! You're going to let me work on the project with you?!"
"Well, as long as you don't let Luke find out, you can work on it with me and Jennifer." Luke adverted his attention over to the bakery in confusion. There were lights coming from the kitchen but the door was closed. "That's odd. Jennifer said that her and the other bakers were too tired to come back here and work on this order they got this morning."
"The order for 450 macaroons, right?" Penelope asked.
Derek nodded his head. "I was going to come in early tomorrow to help them out since it's a big order." He smirked as he zipped up his jacket and yawned. "Well, as long as I don't have to come in for work early, I don't care." Dangling his car keys from his hands, he smiled. "I'm going to head out first. See you tomorrow."
Penelope waved goodbye. She should leave too but again, this damn curiosity. Biting her lower lip, she carefully walked through the bakery and squinted her eyes though the door window to see who is inside. "What..." She knit her eyebrows and watch as Luke, who has flour all over him, was walking back and forth between the oven and the table. From what she can see with very little light that is inside, there were rows and rows of the macaroons over at the kitchen counters. Quietly, she continued watching as Luke balanced two new huge trays of fresh macaroons with his hands and onto the counters. As soon as he puts two different trays into the oven, he walked over to the sink to wash his hands. In one swift move, he took out little cute bags with ribbons attached to them out. Luke twirled his neck around for a few seconds, he must have a strain on his neck from all the constant baking. Penelope couldn't stop her mouth from opening, what is all of this? Has he been baking the macaroons since the moment she left the kitchen earlier in the afternoon? Just by staring at the batches of the macaroons that are done, there's at least only about 200 of them. He still has so much to do in such a short time span. She took one last peek just in time to see Luke adding a couple of macaroons into the cute little bags carefully.
Stepping away from the door and the bakery, Penelope stared aimlessly at the floor. "He end up learning and improving..." A small faint smile appeared on her face, something she didn't even notice as she walked out of the building.
. . .
"Good morning," Penelope greeted Jennifer by the door of the building. "You're here early."
Jennifer smiled. "I can say the same for you," she took a sip of her coffee. "You do realize that you don't have to come in as early like us. You're technically under the same hours as Derek since he comes into work two hours and a half later than the rest of us."
"I still think it's best if - " Penelope stopped talking when one of the bakers, she recognized to be Grant Anderson charges forward toward them.
"Grant, there's no need to run." Jennifer said. "We'll get the macaroons done in time. The people aren't picking it up until 2 and it's only," checking the time on her watch. "It's only 8."
Penelope arched an eyebrow at the timing that Jennifer thinks she has for the macaroons. Does she honestly think she would've gotten the order for 450 done in six hours?
"No." Grant said. "The macaroons are done!"
Jennifer looked at him as if he was crazy. "What are you talking about?" She started rushing over to the kitchen with Grant and Penelope following behind. "What the - " In front of them were rows of baskets with bagged macaroons inside. "Who did this?" She immediately looked at her junior baker. "Grant Anderson..."
Grant shook his head. "I wish I could say I did it." He picked up one of the bags and pointed at them. "Look at how perfect they are! You know that I still lack in that area of perfecting it."
She glanced over at the other bakers, who also were shaking their heads. "Well, whoever did it. Thank goodness."
Penelope heard the familiar sounds of Lynda's high heels again. She turned her head over to the doorway just in time to see Luke and Lynda walk in. "It's nice to see my employees come into work early."
"Did you give someone else permission to do the order of macaroons?" Jennifer asked him.
Luke glanced at the macaroons and the bakers. "No but I can see that they're all finished." He crossed his arms and looked at them. "Seeing as how it's done and the four of you did work hard for last night's wedding." He paused and shrugged his shoulders. "Take four hours off and come back to work afterwards. I want cream puffs to be out on display today."
"Wait, you're giving us a half day off?" Grant questioned to make sure.
“I can take it back if you want." Luke blankly said.
"No! We'll take it!" The other bakers screamed in happiness.
Jennifer narrowed her eyes at him. "Are you sure you don't know who did this? Did you assign this order for someone?"
"No," Luke repeated. "I don't know who did this order but as long as it's done and you get a break that you haven't gotten in a while, should we really be complaining here?"
Penelope has been standing in silence, listening to their conversation, waiting for the moment that Luke would say that he was actually the one that did the whole order by himself. The fact that he didn't admit to anything has her really confused.
"I expect to see two rows of cream puffs on display by the afternoon." Luke glanced at the bakers and stared around the kitchen. He didn't say anything else before he turned around with Lynda following and walked out of the door.
Grant scoffed. "The break's not even a break. It takes an hour to make the mixture and cream for the puff and another hour for when it's in the oven." He rolled his eyes. "The one moment we expect him to be caring, it's a joke."
One of the bakers sighed as he took out a huge bowl out to start the cream for the cream puffs. "That man is nothing but someone who complains. He does nothing for this company either. The one who did this order for us should be head of the company."
Penelope almost opened her mouth to correct the baker's words but she closed it. What's even the point? She doesn't feel it's necessary to share something good of what Luke did nor does she see a point in correcting somebody else's opinion. She quietly dismissed herself from the kitchen and head toward the elevators. She came just in time to share the same one with Luke and Lynda, sadly. Clearing her throat, she leaned against the back of the wall and watched as the numbers for the floors slowly go up.
"Sir, are you tired?" Lynda asked. Penelope glanced over to see Luke is leaning his head against the wall with his eyes closed and arms crossed. "Did you stay up to look over the new upcoming projects again?"
"You can say that," Luke silently said. "What time is our phone conference with Italy?"
Lynda checked her tablet. "In an hour."
"Bring me all the detailed documents we have on their company and a cup of coffee into my office. I want to study on their foundation before the meeting starts." The sound of the elevators arriving to the 22nd floor immediately made him to stand up straight before walking out.
Penelope stepped out and silently watched as Luke entered his office. "So, that's how you look like when you're being serious...." Taking a deep breath, she settled into her seat and folded her arms as she stared at the time. Another beginning to what seems like another repetitive day for her.
. . .
Luke loudly yawned as soon as he was alone in the office. Collapsing in his seat, he placed his head onto the desk for a brief nap. This is the single moment that he wants Lynda to be late on the coffee and document. Finishing the order of macaroons around one in the morning and driving back home takes close to 45 minutes, he barely got any sleep in. This is the moment that needs, just peace and - he abruptly sat up as soon as he heard knocking on his door. "Come in."
Lynda showed up with his coffee in one hand and the stack of documents on the other. "Here is what you told me get." She stepped back and watched as he sipped the coffee and started getting into business as he opened the documents.
"You can leave now." From the corner of his eyes, he could see her nodding her head before walking out of the office. Luke stretched his arms and legs out for a few minutes and quickly returned back to work.

Healthcare and the F-Word: Health Politics Rank High on November 6, 2018
“Let’s get this thing f-ing done,” Martha McSally passionately asserted on May 4, 2017.
Paul Ryan said, on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives without cursing, “A lot of us have waited seven years to cast this vote.”
McSally, who represents Tucson, Arizona, in the U.S. Congress, is running to replace retiring Senator Jeff Flake. McSally was one of the 217 Republicans in the House who voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, subsequently celebrating a victory in the Rose Garden of the White House with jubilant peers. The final vote was 217-213. Here’s the final roll call from the Clerk of the House.
And here’s the notorious tweet about her use of the f-word, and the link to the article in the Tucson Weekly which reported on the day talked about McSally’s enthusiasm for cutting down the Affordable Care Act with her Republican colleagues in the House.
In my 11 years of writing every one of over 2,000 Health Populi posts on this blog, I have never, ever mentioned the “f-word” here.
In this case, I feel it’s important to capture the Zeitgeist of the Republican Party’s commitment to cutting down the ACA since President Trump took office in January 2017. Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan, helming their leadership posts in the Senate and the House, respectively, had the President’s back on this from the start. They fought to erode key elements embedded in the law meant to protect health consumers’ rights: among them, health promotion, disease prevention, and public health; and the assurance that sick people would be covered by health insurance plans without prejudice. That, in two words, is the protection of people in America with pre-existing conditions.
Truth is, the phrase “pre-existing conditions” wasn’t discussed much among mainstream folks in the U.S. It’s been a concept that, largely, only health policy wonks (like me) talked much about.
What a difference a year makes. Today, most Americans seem to understand what the concept means, and especially how the reality of it translates to them, personally, as patients or people who love sick and diagnosed people.
Each of us has someone who has dealt with cancer or heart disease in our families, or close-in social networks, neighborhoods, and workplaces. Perhaps you or your sibling has been diagnosed with depression or anxiety. Or, had a pregnancy complication or are dealing with diabetes.
The fact is that most U.S. adults believe that health insurance plans should cover people with pre-existing conditions. This is true for majorities of people across political party, the Kaiser Family Foundation found in its August 2018 Health Tracking Poll. The bar chart shows, clearly, that the vast majority of Democrats and Independents, and most Republicans, say it’s “very important” to them that health insurance can’t deny a person in America coverage because of their medical history, or charge sick people more for health insurance premiums.
Back to McSally: Sean Hannity interviewed her on his radio show on 22nd October. McSally said, “Well, Sean, I did vote to repeal and replace Obamacare on that House bill — I’m getting my ass kicked for it right now because it’s being misconstrued by the Democrats,” she said. “They’re trying to, you know, invoke fear in people who have family members or loved ones with pre-existing conditions.” You can listen to that full podcast on the 2018 mid-term elections here.
[As a sidebar, if you’re concerned about the state of civil verbal discourse in America, you may be comforted to know that an Arizona State Legislator Lori Klein (R-Anthem) introduced a law into the State House to prevent teachers from cussing in Arizona classrooms, as this article from back in 2012 discusses. If passed, the bill would punish public school teachers if they use words that violate the obscenity and profanity guidelines set forth by the Federal Communications Commission, the AP articled explained.]
Health Populi’s Hot Points:  Bob Blendon and colleagues from the Harvard Chan School of Public Health wrote about Health Care in the 2018 Election in last week’s New England Journal of Medicine. In their poll of 487 likely U.S. voters, conducted in September 2018, making sure insurance companies still have to provide health insurance for people with preexisting conditions ranks top of mind for likely voters in this year’s elections. The third chart illustrates the healthcare priorities among people likely to vote this yea
Lowering the costs of care, ensuring the integrity of Medicare benefits, ensuring that low-income people don’t lose Medicaid coverage, and lowering prescription drug prices gain majority support across all health care voters who say health care is extremely important in the choice for members of Congress this year.
Professor Blendon pointed out in a webinar last week that covering pre-existing conditions for health insurance coverage is now a “moral and emotional issue.” Ten years ago, he explained, it was only on the business pages as a technical term.
While so much attention is on the House and Senate races in the 2018 mid-terms, we should closely watch the State Gubernatorial elections, too. There will be major health care access implications based on who is voted into their State leadership positions specifically on whether Governors will expand Medicaid to health citizens.
The context for this begins in 1965 when Medicaid was enacted, Blendon said. “Watch the [political] ads,” Blendon recommended. There are “subtle differences to watch,” he observed, stating that, candidates are not running on the Affordable Care Act, but reminding, say, Nebraskans that we’ve had Medicaid for 40 years. Democrats are attacked if they are helping the ACA, Blendon believes, but referendums to take Federal money and expand Medicaid — without uttering the word, “Obamacare” — could be a pragmatic political strategy.
John McDonough, a fellow professor of Blendon’s at the Chan School, was also on the webinar, pointing out the importance of Governors in this year’s election.
“It’s been a long cold lonely winter in terms of Medicaid expansion,” McDonough sighed, “But we might be seeing a sunrise in the near future,” expecting that, “we’ll know more next week.” (That is, tomorrow, as I draft this post).
Virginia will expand Medicaid on January 1, 2019, McDonough asserted, noting that they’ll be state #32 in Medicaid expansion. Then if Maine’s Attorney General, who is a Democrat, wins that state’s Governorship, they would be state #33. Other states, like Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, and Utah, could add up to 37 expansions. “If Kansas goes to the Democrat running, they could expand…Wisconsin, Florida, North Carolina, and others where a change in Democrat control” could move those states to expand Medicaid, as well.
It won’t be in Congress or the White House, but, “democracy in the states and those who have blocked expansion,” McDonough argued, where we could see, “voters coming forward grabbing policy into [our] own hands….amazing to watch,” he said.
At Health Populi and THINK-Health, we’re closely watching tomorrow’s elections for healthcare implications — for national health care reform, action at the state levels, and ultimately, the impacts for patients, consumers and caregivers in the U.S. for the coming 12 to 24 months as we approach the 2020 Presidential election.
To conclude for this moment, looking toward tomorrow’s mid-term election, we end with the historic record. Here is C-SPAN’s video covering the 2017 House vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act. This video is nearly six hours long, so broadcasts the entire event for which the GOP, as Congressman Ryan noted, was seven-years-in-the-making.

Regarding to Motorcycle insurance?
Hi, I'm 24, male. I plan on getting the Yamaha R6-I'll be financing the bike. I have some questions regarding to insurance of the bike. My friend owns a 06 Suzuki GSXR750, it was his first bike, and he is a fresh bike rider also. But his full coverage is only $120/month. While searching online (geico, Progressive, allstate), I find out that the full coverage for the bike itself is $487/month-which I found strange. Because I'm older than my friend, he's 22. I understand that you need full coverage(collision, comprehensive coverage) when you're financing a bike. My friend is also financing the bike. But how come his full coverage is way cheaper than what I've searched for? I also picked the $500 deductible on Comprehensive and Collision too. But the lowest I got was $487/month-if not $880/month. When I decline the Comp and Coll, my coverage is only $84/month. Why is there a big gap for my full coverage comparing to my younger friend with a bigger cc bike? 600 vs. 750.""

Car Insurance Liability who should pay?
My friend was driving my car. We were going to a marketing research session where we were both to make 125.00. I figured my car is nicer, I like a/c and she doesn't like to turn a/c on to save gas so she drove my car. Afterwards, we stopped at Taco Bell and in leaving the parking lot she hit a STATIONARY pole outside of the entrance way which was put there so the box trucks don't hit the overhang of the building. The pole was on the left hand side which means she should have been further over in the lot coming around the corner cause its a 2 way in/out and she hit it on the driver's side which means she was on the wrong side of the road. My car had 6000 of damage. MY insurance is covering everything except my 500 deductible. She wants to pay 250 instead of the 500 and have me go after taco bell for having the pole there. There is no law saying they can't have the pole there and I do not need the grief. Is she responsible for the 500?""

Gap insurance and warranty on car that was totaled?
I am not sure who is right on this one.... We bought a car in 12/11. We purchased gap insurance and an extended warranty at that time through the dealer. We decided to refinance the car through the credit union were we are members. The gap insurance was 1/2 the price we purchased at the dealer. The dealer and bank said that we should receive a refund. In the process of all of this the car was totaled by my 18 year old daughter in March. 1. We recieved a check made out to us from the dealer for the gap insurance.(pro-rated 4 months) 2. The dealer turned in the paperwork for us for the refund on the warranty and the warranty company sent it to the previous lein holder that we left. The initial bank in turn said it was our money and reissued a check made out to us. Any thoughts appreciated. Is it really our money?

Best Averaged sized car for a teenager?
So I'm going for my license soon and we're starting to look at cars to get me around. I've been thinking about the Prius because I hear it's got some leg room and is easy on gas, but people say that batteries are more harmful than regular ones and all this jazz. Then I thought about the Honda Insight but I heard that the headroom in the back is not comfortable. I was thinking the Hyundai Sonata, but the only model I really like is the 2011 and I don't think the insurance company takes kindly to teenagers driving new cars. I would prefer not too big or long a car like the Toyota Avalon, but it's manageable. Any suggestions?""
Assurant Health Insurance?
