Tumblr media
i'll always prefer the og but this iteration is entertaining
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
The Old Codgers Greatest Hits Album (AggressiveWhenStartled, author; quietnight, narrator) - 57K series, canon-divergent stucky co-starring peter parker. Reread of this hilarious forever fave where first teenage peter is forced to deal with two body-swapped geriatric supersoldiers and then bucky is forced to deal with two teenage spidermen trying (and failing) to stealthily rescue their "dog". Great podfic by quietnight, absolute hilarity
History of American Capitalism (Zenaidamacrouras1) - 85K, shrinkyclinks college AU with superstar QB!Bucky & history nerd Steve - incredible found family dynamics, can't believe @zenaidamacrouras1 made me actually really get into an AU that involved both undergrads AND football. The nerve! The talent! (the fic is single POV but there's an amazing companion piece that's Bucky's convos with this sister that give a his POV on some of it and it's equally amazing)
💖💖 +347K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
Half sleep, half waking (softestpunk) - The Sandman & Rivers of London crossover: dreamling, 8K - amazing crossover! I wish there was 60K of this for me to read
Road to Joy (Oddree13) - Stranger Things: steddie, 25K - latest chapter in this omegaverse steddie series that I absolutely adore
Knit One, Purl Two (mollus) - MCU: stucky, 32K - reread; forever fave WS recovery fic with lots of softness in the form of: knitting, dancing, soap making and senior citizens
Red, White & Royal Goose (fairestfaerie) - RWRB: alex/henry, 7K - I just love a good Soulmate Goose of Enforcement fic
This Sunlit Land (eyres) - MCU: stucky, 38K - wonderful canon/timeline-divergent WS recovery AU

“Bliss!” you thought, taking in the unique smell of the bookstore. The last few weeks had been crazy, work keeping you on your toes even on the weekends. This was your first free day in over a month, and what was better than spending it at your favorite place in town.
You loved aimlessly browsing the dozens of shelves for something new to read, your favorite pastime since childhood. You were still contemplating about the kind of lecture you were looking for when a bright red book spine caught your attention. You had always been a person who could be easily attracted by a pretty, colorful cover, so your hand instinctively surged forward to grab the book out of the shelf. But before you could get a hold on it, another hand got in your way, blocking yours and snatching the volume right under your nose.
You were about to complain to whoever had the audacity to get between you and a book, when you looked up at the stranger.
“He’s so tall.” Was the first thing that came to your mind, followed almost instantly by “And hot.” You could feel yourself starting to get slightly flustered, your initial anger forgotten.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, I didn’t think anyone else besides me could be that interested in the medias influence on the US’s political relationship with China.” The stranger said. He had a smooth, deep voice, the kind of voice you could easily imagine yourself listing to for hours. You stared at him, your usually quick brain a bit overwhelmed with your body’s visceral reaction to the mans presence .
“Political relationship with China?” you repeated, confused and sounding like the biggest idiot ever to your own ears.
“Yes, because that’s what this is about.” The man turned the book around so you could look at the cover. “You’re aware that you’re in the politics section?” He added, slower, like he was talking to a child.
You tried to collect yourself, you usually prided yourself on your quick-wittedness and you didn’t like how nervous this stranger was making you at all. You didn’t know what it was about him, maybe his imposing figure or his intense gaze, but he was intimidating.
“Oh, yes, I was searching for a similar looking book.” You lied quickly. “My mistake.”
Turning around to another shelf with some new arrivals, you grabbed the first red-spined book that caught your eyes.
“Here. That’s the one I actually want.” You replied, showing the random book to the man. He mustered the cover and a small smirk settled over his face.
“The Hellfire Club, huh? You’re a fan of political thrillers?” he asked, a hint of amusement in his voice.
“Of course, huge fan. I’ve read all of the authors works, been really looking forward to this one. I heard it’s set in New York.” In reality, you didn’t have the slightest clue what this book was about, and even less why you were lying to this random guy about it. Did you just want him off your back, or did you want to impress him, engage him in conversation? He was fascinating and for some reason you felt like this conversation was spinning a bit out of your control.
The man raised his eyebrows at you, looking like he could sense your nervousness.
“It’s a decent book, I guess. But I heard the author is a real prick.” He gave you an almost conspiratorial wink. “I have to go now, but enjoy it. New York is definitely a fascinating city.” He turned around and left in the direction of the checkout.
You opened the book, looking inside to find out who this guy was having such a low opinion about. There was a small picture of the author in there, and as you studied it you felt like you might get sick.
It was the stranger from moments before. Jake Tapper. You had lied to Jake Tapper. You groaned internally, why the hell hadn’t you recognize him?
Yes, you didn’t watch his shows, too little time. But he was something like a celebrity, and you blatantly told him absolute bullshit about his own book in an attempt to appear cleverer than you were. How had this guy been able to unsettle you that way?
“The damn Capitol is literally on the cover, you idiot.” You whispered to yourself, absolutely mortified. You had to go after him and clear this up or you would never rest again.
But as your eyes scanned the bookstore, he was already making his way out, disappearing onto the crowded street.
+++
Two weeks later, you still couldn’t think about the encounter without being totally embarrassed. You had bought the book, and of course it wasn’t set in New York. But it was a fascinating read, you weren’t able to put it away for the whole weekend, finishing it only three days after you purchased it.
At the same time, you weren’t able to stop thinking about Jake Tapper either. Even in the brief moment you shared with him, he had managed to leave a lasting expression, and your thoughts were circling around his dark eyes and deep voice more often than you’d care to admit.
The sound of an incoming email disturbed your thoughts, and as you checked, it your heart did a little jump in your chest. It was the newsletter from your favorite bookstore, announcing an event with no one else than Jake Tapper himself, signing copies of his latest political thriller The Hellfire Club.
Without even thinking about it twice, you signed yourself up for the event. You had to see him again, try to explain yourself and get some closure about the situation, or those thoughts of him would probably haunt you forever.
+++
You’ve been anxiously waiting in line for thirty minutes now, and finally it was your turn. As soon as the man’s eyes landed on you, he raised his eyebrows and a smug smile settled over his face
“And so, we meet again. I sincerely hope the lack of New York content wasn’t too much of a disappointment.”
So he remembered you. Great.
“Ok, I deserve that.” You murmured, embarrassed by the whole situation. You started to regret even coming here, but now you had to get it over with.
“I just came to, well, apologize, I guess. And prove that I’m not an idiot.” Why were you blabbering like that? This man’s scrutiny made you so nervous, his attentive gaze was fixed on you while you were struggling to explain the situation.
“I loved the book, by the way, great style and the storyline was very captivating. Even without New York.” You added, a weak attempt at a joke. To your total surprise, he chuckled, a sound that made you even more agitated. By now, you were sure that your face was the color of a fire truck.
“I’m glad you enjoyed it.” Jake replied. “And no hard feelings about what happened. Maybe I should let my next novel play in New York in reference to our encounter. Also, I am at a bit of a disadvantage here, you know my name but haven’t told me yours.”
You quickly introduced yourself, and he reached over the desk to take the book you held in your hand. When you didn’t let go immediately, his hand stopped, and he looked at you with a puzzled expression. His fingers were brushing against yours, a fact that obviously overwhelmed your brain as you weren’t able to move a muscle to hand over the book.
Touching him made a spark went through you, and from the way Jakes eyes slightly darkened, you could tell that he had felt it as well. You stared into each other’s eyes for seconds until someone in line behind you coughed, and you snapped out of your frenzy.
“I assumed you want me to sign your copy.” Jake mumbled, still holding onto your book.
“Yes, of course. I’m sorry.” You replied hastily, handing him the volume and internally cursing your body for the nervous, awkward way it behaved in front of this man.
Jake grabbed a pen, signing the front page and scribbling a note into the bottom right corner. He handed it back to you, and you opened to read what he had written. It was a row of numbers, and before you could make sense of it, he spoke again.
“That’s my number. I would love to hear some more of your potential book ideas, if you’d be interested. Maybe over dinner, or some drinks?” His voice was smooth, but there was a hint of insecurity, like the smallest crack in his façade.
Was he asking you out? Quick, you told yourself, say something.
“Uhm, yeah, sounds good.” Wow, great response. Pulling yourself together, you added “I’d love to.”
“Great. I’m looking forward to hearing from you, Y/N. Now, I’m sorry, but I think there are some more readers who demand my attention.” Jake said, pointing to the waiting people behind you. “I’ll see you around?”
“Absolutely!” you burst out, your own voice sounding terribly loud to your own ears, and without saying goodbye, you turned around and fled the bookstore.
+++
Back at home, you tried to make sense of everything that had happened. First of all, you had, one more time, acted like a train wreck in front of Jake Tapper. And secondly, it obviously hadn’t bothered him too much, because he had really asked you out.
What brought the next problem, what was an appropriate time to call him? Your head went through every possible option, from phoning him right now to never contacting him again to save yourself from further embarrassment. After some back and forth, you decided to wait another day, that gave you enough time to think about what to say to him.
+++
“Hello, Jake Tapper speaking.”
Hearing his voice was enough to make your own go slightly shrill with nervousness.
“Uhm, hi, this is Y/N, from the bookstore yesterday, you remember?”
“Of course I remember.” Jake replied, “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“I was wondering, if the offer still stands, I’d love to have dinner with you somewhere.” You were proud that you managed to keep your voice steady despite your fluttering nerves.
“Absolutely, whenever your free. How does Saturday sound?”
+++
It was Saturday, and the restaurant you had agreed on was packed with people. The food was great, and the company even more so. After a glass of wine, your initial anxiety had eased down a bit, allowing you to engage in some actual conversation with Jake. He was as fascinating as you had expected, and you found yourself dreamily staring at his eyes and the way they lit up when he was talking about something he was especially passionate about.
You discovered your shared love for books, and the bookstore you had met in in particular, it was Jake’s favorite as well.
“How is it that I have never seen you there before?” you asked.
Jake shrugged, leaning back into his chair.
“Unfortunately, I don’t have much time to go there, and when I do its usually first thing in the morning when they open up. But I buy a book every time. And I’m glad we finally ran into each other.” He leaned towards you again, focusing his eyes on you in a way that made your body heat up.
“I’m glad you even wanted to see me again after that awful first impression.” You mumbled, it was still uncomfortable to talk about that. But Jake just chuckled softly, reaching out to grab your hand, intertwining his fingers with yours. For a moment, the soft stroking of his thumb against your skin was everything you could focus on.
“It definitely wasn’t awful, far from it actually. And please don’t assume I wasn’t nervous as well, you are gorgeous and were browsing the politics section of the bookstore. I just had to talk to you.”his voice was dropping a bit as he pressed his thumb down against a sensitive spot on your palm, making you gasp slightly.
Somehow, the knowledge that you had made the Jake Tapper nervous gave your ego a slight boost.
"Well, you didn’t show it, but I’m glad I’m not the only one who felt that way.” You said, squeezing Jakes hand and, in a moment of bravery, began to slide your bare foot slowly against his leg. His sharp intake of breath told you that it had the intended effect on him.
“So you buy a book every time you’re in the store.” You continued, trying to appear unfazed while still keeping contact under the table. “Your bookshelf must be impressive.”
“I have quite the collection.” Jake replied, his voice a low growl now. His pupils were blown, making his eyes appear dark and almost hungry.
With a quick move, he reached under the table to where your foot had almost reached the inside of his tight and grabed your ankle in a strong grip. A tingling sensation went from where was was touching you all the way up to your core and you clenched your legs together.
„Careful, Y/N. Don’t tease me.“ Jake pressed out in a slightly stained voice.
The tension between the two of you was almost palpable by now.
“I’d just love to see your bookshelf, Jake.” you whispered, biting your lip. You wanted this man, and from the way he was watching you, you could tell that the desire was definitely mutual.
+++
One hurried bill and speedy car ride later, you found yourself pressed against Jake Tappers bookshelf by the man himself. Your hands were tangled in his hair as he was kissing you, his own fingers nestling with the buttons of your jeans. Your shirt already lay discarded on the floor along with his own, and the bare skin of his chest felt amazing where it was pressed against yours.
You groaned when Jake moved his lips to your jaw, kissing down your neck and softly biting into the junction of your shoulder. He slid your jeans down your hips, and you hastily stepped out of them before doing the same to his trousers, leaving the both of you in only your underwear.
When you grinded your core against his boxer-clad erection, he roughly grabbed your ass and pulled you over to the sofa.
"Enough with the damn teasing.“ he growled into your ear, pushing you down onto the soft cushions.
“Jake, please.” You whimpered as he unclasped our bra with one hand and pinched one of your bared nipples with the other.
You could barely think straight anymore, aching for his touch, your panties already slick with need. He pulled them down your legs, his fingers leaving a burning trail where they were brushing over your skin.
“Fuck, you’re soaked.” He whispered when his fingers finally found their way between your tights. He circled your clit, but the soft pressure he applied wasn’t enough for you.
“Please.” You repeated, your voice only a breathy moan by now. “I need more.”
Jake softly swore under his breath, retreating his fingers before standing up and getting rid of his underwear. He took a moment to look down at you, taking in your naked body, splayed out on his couch, your legs spread.
The intensity of his gaze made you squirm and bite your lip in anticipation, he looked like he wanted to devour you.
“Look at you, all needy and ready for me. You are gorgeous, Y/N.” Jake said in a stained voice, before moving to lie on top of you, claiming your lips in a bruising kiss. His erecrion teased your entrance, his hands grabbing your thighs with a hard grip as he slowly entered you. You groaned into his mouth as he filled you until he bottomed out.
With a nudge of your pelvis, you encouraged him to start moving. His pace was slow at first, but he increased his speed as you raked your nails across his back and spurred him on with whispers of his name and pleads to go faster, harder.
“You feel so good, fucking amazing.” Jake growled, one of his hands grabbing a fist of your hair while the other one squeezed your ass, his nails digging into your skin, creating just the right amount of pain to drive you crazy.
You wrapped your legs around his hips and he groaned against your skin as he deepened his thrusts, driving you closer and closer to your climax.
His hard, relentless gaze never left yours as he was fucking you and being the focus of his unwavering attention gave you a heady feeling.
When he told you to come, it almost sounded like a command, and you clenched around him as you reached your peak. He followed you after a few more thrusts, holding you tightly as he came inside you.
“Wow.” You whispered, pressing your forehead against Jakes. He stroked your hair, eyes still settled on you, and it felt as if he could see your every thought.
“That was incredible.” you continued, and Jake hummed in agreement before pulling out and rolling off you. He still watched you with the same unreadable expression for a moment, before he spoke out.
“I want to be honest, Y/N. I hope tonight wasn’t a one-time thing for you.”
Your heartrate that had just slowed down a bit sped up again, a broad, happy smile settling over your face.
“That depends.” You replied.
Jake arched an eyebrow at you. “And on what exactly?”
“How impressive the content of your bookshelf really is.”

are you working on anything right now?
Ha… Haha…. Ha….. I realize this has been in my inbox for I think…. a month……. In my own defense though, I got WiFi TODAY so.
Also, I am going to answer the question in most quintessentially ‘me’ way ever… By talking too much, if you’re not that interested, it’ll be under the cut.
But rest assured, it is a tale of woe and tragedy.
Some background:
“Alec Lightwood. A graduate of Yale undergrad, and then Harvard Law, Fulbright Scholar, on the fucking rowing team. Poster boy everywhere for “trust fund pretty boy from the Upper East Side.”
And a devastatingly effective political operative.
Pretty much no one thought that Garroway had a real shot. Too Black for white America. Alienated Black voters because he was a detective in New York during Stop- And- Frisk. Magnus had quietly, in the privacy of his own head, discounted him.
He was entirely convinced Imogen Herondale- Democratic Party royalty, married to a previous President, an old-fashioned moderate Democrat with socially liberal ideals, would sweep the party nomination no sweat. The perfectly electable candidate.
Everyone with a brain thought that until Alec Lightwood, his sister Isabelle, and the rest of their terrifyingly young motley crew joined in.
They call it the Garroway Coalition, and it sparked minorities and young people in a way that Magnus had never seen before on this level. ”
and
“Anyone who cares about politics knows about Magnus Bane. Poor family, worked every day to afford the first two years of community college. Transferred to Stanford University in his third year. Ended up going to Columbia University School of Journalism for grad school.
He’s written for everyone: The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, The Chicago Tribune. Then he moves to CNN and gets his own show, and all of a sudden all of his incisive questions, his dogged pursuit of the absolute truth, is visible to an average American on their TV set.
Alec remembers when Magnus came splashing on the scene seven years ago. In a piece that would eventually win him his first Pulitzer Prize at the tender age of twenty-seven, he almost single-handedly took down the Edom Gang and sent Asmodeus Kusuma to jail.
He can picture, with vivid clarity, the disclaimer printed in nondescript italics before nearly 100,000 words of painstakingly researched facts: In 1984 Asmodeus Kusama raped Anita Bane in Jakarta, Indonesia. Twelve years later, he killed her. She was my mother. ”
Basically, Magnus is a journalist in the style of like… a Ronan Farrow type mixed with a Jake Tapper vibe. Meanwhile, Alec is the Deputy-Chief of Staff for President Luke Garroway, with a sort of Josh Lyman vibe (if you don’t know who any of those people are it doesn’t matter).
But they like… keep hate fucking each other all the time.
So its sort of a fuckbuddies/enemies-friends-real relationship type story.
I wrote 22 fucking pages of it.
AND THEN I REALIZED…. THAT I’M SO FUCKING STUPID. If you see the problem already, congrats, you’re a billion times smarter than me.
There was no ethical way for me to write them in a relationship. I was like “hey, this will be fine… I mean Connie Shultz is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and she’s married to a Senator. Maybe?” Then I remember that she actually had to stop working at the paper she won her Pulitzer at because people kept being like ‘ethics!!”
So I was like, okay- maybe Alec can quit his job at the end? But Then I was like… Really, I’m going to write a story which can only work if one of them gives up their dreams?
I wrote twenty-two pages before i realized this. I officially can’t stand myself. It's also low key sad because I think it would have been a fun little fic if I was ever able to come to an ending that didn’t make me want to Die.
TL;DR: I was…. but now I have to scrap it :(

2) to quote you "And yes OBVIOUSLY I would write a Poe/Luke fic about this. BUT WHICH ONE SHOULD BE SICK???" The answer; Luke, but I wouldn't sob if your muse went the other way. Disasterfic or American President!verse
“You’re the President of the United States, you can’t stay home because your boyfriend is sick,” Poe says.
Actually, he doesn’t say that. He says “Yewr duh Brezden ub duh Udeyeded Sdades, you cand sday hobe because yewr boyfred is sig.” But the meaning conveys.
“I’m not,” Luke says cheerfully. The past three months have been incredibly disorienting; President or not, Luke’s hardly in the prime of life, and looking at Poe almost hurts sometimes. The old adage of power and beauty certainly could apply, but a) with an opposition Congress he doesn’t feel all that powerful anyway and b) Poe’s goodness shines out of him with every breath he takes. This is real, whatever it is. But it still feels baffling.
But right now, Poe looks...well, downright ordinary, with a stupendously bad cold complete with stuffy nose, puffy eyes and chapped lips. He only looks twice as good as any other man Luke’s ever laid eyes on.
Poe, for his part, sneezes and says, “Ow. What do you mean you’re not?”
“Turn on the TV.”
Squinting suspiciously, Poe fumbles for the remote, buried in about three kleenex boxes worth of used tissues. Tsking slightly, Luke sets to work cleaning up. “You know, this is the presidential suite,” he points out. “You could at least aim for the—”
“Press Secretary Lando Calrissian issued a statement saying the President had in fact caught his daughter’s cold and would be staying in the East Wing for the rest of the day,” Jake Tapper says, “And that Vice President Nunb will be taking his place at the state dinner this evening. Calrissian added that the President expects to make a full recovery—”
“You had Lando lie to the pool?” Poe says, sounding torn between outrage and admiration.
“I hate to break it to you, Poe, but the Press Secretary lies a fair amount to the pool,” Luke says, finally de-tissuing the bed and setting the garbage can down. He scoots Poe over and climbs into bed, toeing his shoes off as he settles himself beside him. This feels... right. It feels good.
Poe, for his part, looks up at him balefully. “I would consider this a declaration of true love,” he muttered, “If I didn’t know for a fact you’ve been itching to skip that dinner for two weeks.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Luke says, wresting the remote control away from him and changing the channel. “Ohh, Muppet Christmas Carol is on!”

They all meet up in Abby’s apartment around midnight. They all have places to go, things to do, people to be, but still – they need this. This symbol of closure since they can’t get any closure. They were all pawns to someone else’s game – a game that seems to have no winners, only losers; no plot, only exposition; no substance, only stupidity. She and Glenn were played, Robert and Abby were played, Jim and Jake were played, Katie was played, and Sally Priebus was played. They were all played and for what? For nothing, that’s what. It’s barely been a day since she decided it, and already she regrets not publishing that article.

The first CNN Hanuqa ( CNNuqa? ) Harry Enten spent in his new job seemed, upon entering, to involve a significantly smaller amount of afterpartying than he’d expected.
It wasn't even- he checked his phone- midnight. The white numbers blaring 10:44 PM shone up at him.  Enten blinked. He turned off the phone, and looked back up, where somehow, only a few of the anchors were still here-- John, Dana, and Anderson sitting on the couch, Jake sitting by the table, and Wolf leaning against the doorway.
You'd think the bulk of the reporters here would last until at least 2:00 AM, Harry figured, but he supposed it was just his New York sensibilities talking. His fault for faulty assumptions, he supposed.
" Shalom." Harry waved. " Sorry, I seem to late."
" Shalom," John, Jake, and Wolf offered back. Anderson gave him a wave.
" No problem." Dana said.  She got up. " There's still some food that needs to be taken out- I think we still have latkes to-"
" No, it's fine-"
" Yeah, we still have latkes." Anderson confirmed, and Harry had not realized that he had already gotten out of his seat, took out a plate from the kitchen, and plopped it into Harry's hands.
Wow, they smelled good. And warm.
" Huh, thanks." Harry said. " These aren't storebought."
" I know, I was shocked that wolves could cook too." Dana agreed. " Do you want any more?"
Harry frowned, confused. Wolf waved.
" No, six is enough." Harry finalized. " Thanks."
He checked for something to say in the silence. At last, Harry placed down his plate, and pulled out a chair on the opposite side of Jake Tapper.
“ Can you imagine," Harry asked, for the sake of conversation, after he'd settled into the wooden seat,  "if Hanuqa ever fell during election season?"
The new CNN Senior Political Analyst ( no trademark, unfortunately ) wasn't sure what he was expecting when he offered up the question, but he did feel a moderate amount of surprise when all five of the anchors began to double over.
Wolf gave a stiff cough. Anderson furrowed his eyebrows, before a look of sudden horror seemed to sink itself into his expression. Dana chewed her lip, and then proceeded to press her hand against her eyes. From where John was, a latke was unceremoniously murdered by a fork.
Before Harry Enten could comprehend it, Jake Tapper bowled himself over, and slammed his head against the table.
" Please don't make me." he pleaded with abrupt demand. A phone was suddenly jabbed accusingly at Harry's face. Jake rubbed the space between his eyebrows in desperation, lines on his face sinking in with weariness. " Do you know, if that ever happened, my hand would be so fucked up with carpal tunnel-"
John gave a heavy nod at that.
" Everyone's hand would be messed from carpal tunnel--"
" --  I might as well just light all my fingers on fire minus one, and not only would that be less painful, I'd also be happier to do it."
Anderson and John echoed Jake's words alongside him, Tapper's forehead collapsing again with a thud.
Harry frowned. He stabbed his food, and promptly ate it.
" ...Would it be that bad?" Harry asked, his voice as light as possible. He chewed the chunk of the cheese latke that he'd just covered with ketchup, and gently placed the bottle next to Jake's seemingly comatose form. He glanced at the others.
" It wouldn't be the worst," Dana remarked, clear blue eyes looking at Harry.  " You could take comfort, it's not like election day is that different from the end result of that formed the Hasmoneans."
Wolf turned his neck to look at her as she got up to exit to the other room, returning moments later with just-made potato dumplings.
"...Did you mean to say there's a connection between the Maccabees' overthrowing of a Greek dynasty and a democratic transition of power from one office-holder to another?"  Wolf inquired as she walked back.
Dana looked at Wolf as she sat down, placing the basket onto the table.  " It's a metaphor." she said. " About the importance of advocating for rights and freedoms under a government that might not have your interests at heart.”
" Couldn’t it also be a moral lesson about stopping a revolt that threatens to topple democracy?”
Dana shrugged, the- not tater tots- were freshly made. Harry felt himself get hungry again from smelling the heavy aroma of the food. They were pale gold in the basket.
“ I’m sure there is one person in the White House who sees it like that.” Dana popped the food into her mouth, chewing. She looked at John. " Want one? Last batch."
“ There’s probably an op-ed for that already,” Harry pulled out his phone, swiping past to his notes. “ Any other parallels we’re drawing here?”
“ Something about unification, if you’re willing to do a parallel of two-parties, two-kingdoms."
" The implications of that statement..."
“Debate is a Hanuqa tradition."
" Only if every day was Hanuqa."
“ Interviews aren’t meant to be debates— do you mean panel discussions?” John offered. Jake's latkes had to be cold by now, but he was still eating them. A true sign of bravery.
“ You’re right, interviews dissolve into arguing, not constructive dialogue." Jake agreed through a mouthful. " Is there any way to get some good old fashioned civil conversation nowadays on the news?”
The man promptly removed the ketchup bottle that Harry had given him from the vicinity of the table.
" Do you mean moderating?" Anderson offered. He stared at the potato dumplings in a basket where Dana brought them in. Harry noticed that the basket had the CNN logo on it.
“ Or press conferences?” Dana offered. She gave the basket over to Anderson. Everything had the CNN logo on it in CNN.
" Or Town hall?" Harry offered, providing Jake with sour cream instead. He was starting to worry that even he was inevitably going to have that logo on him.
" Shlishkes,” Wolf took one. “ Jake, you host your own program, but we see your point."
" The point is,” Jake said, “Hanuqa is supposed to be enjoyable. No one can enjoy it if there's elections, democracy, and unreasonable conspiracies to be worried about."
Honestly, Harry figured that doing that would be pretty enjoyable for at least approximately one person, himself included. Anderson passed the basket over too Jake, who immediately shoved it aside for Harry to look at.
" I'm pretty sure Judah Maccabbee wasn't enjoying it either when he was bunkering down." Dana said. She grinned. " It's definitely a metaphor."
" About the never-ending struggle for truth and change in the world?" John asked.
Harry plucked one out, and split the dough in half. It melted warm in his mouth, saltish. Savory. Chewy, kind of a crunchy texture. He ate another.
" About how the struggle for change requires constant attentiveness to not give into pressure, as well as how miracles can come from the oddest places. " Dana agreed, solemn.
Harry raised an eyebrow as Jake pushed away his polite offer of cranberry. He continued to stuff his face the shlishkes. He offered the basket back to Jake with a want one? expression, but Jake looked focused on the other anchors.
" What would you choose to do if election day ever did coincide with Hanuqa?" the man asked.
" Probably stay and do my democratic duty." Dana acknowledged after a moment of contemplation. " Wolf, you would do that too, right?"
She looked at Wolf, who, to add another credit to his many already in place, agreed instantly.
" Of course-- I'd hate to leave Anderson the burden to be the sole reporter for everything. Besides, it would just be one election cycle."
Anderson hummed. " Thanks, Wolf. But what if it was every election cycle?"
Wolf looked pained.
 " John, how about you?"
John squinted his eyes.
" That might actually be the hardest question I've ever faced. Can I please come back to it in ten minutes?" he questioned.
" That would be acceptable." Wolf agreed.
" It'd depend on the situation."
" That was fast.”
" Well it's not like I can just leave if the election was like-- 2016." John argued, looking at Harry. " I'd be worried sick and guilty--  Harry, are you eating all that."
Harry popped one last nugget between his lips, and scooted himself out, slipping the basket to John from over the couch. The other reporters on the couches frowned, the glasses on Wolf's face lowering. Dana's eyebrows knitted together.
" I'd send you updates." Anderson and Wolf and Dana said in unison.
" Please don't-- thanks--"
" You're welcome."
"-- that'd just make me feel guiltier. Besides, I get locked in the map for the better half of the election season anyways."
Anderson cocked his head. " By the way, Dana, what recipe did you use for these?"
" Family recipe," Dana answered, pride tinting her voice. " Not too different from any other you'll find, there's just more salt, less oil- I actually forget the recipes of food the second after I make them, I'll send you a screenshot."
Harry turned back to Jake.
" How about you?" Harry asked, shaking the other from his thoughts. " On the hypothetical possibility that we won't ever, in God’s infinite kindness, face?"
" Oh,  fuck."
Jake heaved, giving  a heavy, heavy, sigh. His eyes looked up to the ceiling, before hitting back at Harry. " You know-- if I ate anything of substance after 96 hours of sleeplessness, Red Bull, and cocaine, my body would actually fucking kill me?"
" Cheers ," Wolf, Anderson, Dana, and John echoed in an instant. Jake shook his head, a loose smile breaking out over his face. Dark eyes shone.
“ The best comfort I can find is it’d be something we’d only suffer through once in our lifetimes, at least.” he said to Harry.
Enten pointed out. “ If the Maccabees launched their revolution earlier, we could easily be celebrating Hanukkah entirely inside early November. Maybe October."
“ No.”
He held up his hands in surrender, sitting himself back down into his seat.
Jake reached over to pick a bottle of applesauce from the collection of bottles.  Harry watched as he slathered it over his latkes.
" Something up?" Jake asked, his eyes bright as he looked over at Harry.  The golden-brown latkes, their end strands slightly burnt, drowned on Jake’s plate. Weren't they cold by now? Harry could understand applesauce, just a bit, but surely no one could like that enough to justify eating it on not-warm latkes.
" It's not really my place to judge.” Harry admitted, hopefully speaking not just as a colleague who was very respectful of Jake Tapper’s food preferences, but also as someone who routinely ate Popeyes takeout combined with diet cream soda and root beer. “ I’m sure it tastes great.”
Jake stared at him for a moment longer than needed, pouring way too much applesauce onto his latkes. A lopsided grin fixed itself into his features.
“ You know, you kind of look like Jim,” he said, complimentarily. Harry frowned.
" Who?"
" Mr. Acosta, you've seen him."
“ Hm, kind of." Harry agreed. " Eyebrows, I bet. Thank you.”

Serendipity

note: this story is inspired by how I, when I traveled to DC, picked up the wrong suitcase at the airport. I obviously didn’t meet Jake in the process, but it was still pretty memorable. (actually it was a fckn nightmare, but I can laugh about it now) anyway, here’s some nerdy Jake for you, enjoy :)
pairing: Jake Tapper x female Reader
words: 4.8 k
warnings: swearing, mild smut, questionable star wars references (blame my bf, those are his takes)

serendipity
/ˌsɛr(ə)nˈdɪpɪti/
noun
1. the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way

“Cmon, open, you stupid thing.” You muttered, fumbling with the lock of your suitcase. You were supposed to be at the job interview in only three hours and you needed to get ready and change into professional attire soon. But said outfit was in your suitcase and the lock was obviously jammed.
Against your better judgement, you started rummaging through your small hotel room in search of something to break the lock with. The rational part of your brain knew that this wasn’t necessarily a good idea, but you were desperate. This job was the opportunity of a lifetime and you’d be damned if you turned up there looking anything but your best.
You finally found a small knife hidden in a drawer of the wardrobe. You didn’t even want to think about how it got there, but you couldn’t afford to be picky now. You tried sticking the blade between the two pieces of the lock, when you suddenly realized something. The luggage tag was dark green. This wasn’t your suitcase. Fuck.
You were on your feet in a second, taking your phone and calling the airport hotline. You needed this handled, fast. You described the situation in all its direness to a pretty unimpressed lady from the service hotline. She told you that there hasn’t been any luggage left behind that fit the description, which could only mean that whoever the owner of the suitcase in your hotel room was, they likely made the same mistake and took yours home with them. You mentally slapped yourself for buying that unremarkable black suitcase, thinking that should’ve gone for red or another flashy color instead.
“You still have to come back to the service terminal and hand over the luggage item you falsely took with you, ma’am.” The woman told you, still sounding terribly bored. Her job probably wasn’t the most exciting one.
“I’ll be there as soon as I can.”
You quickly hung up, grabbing the suitcase in question as well as your purse before sprinting out of the door.  You hailed the first cab you saw in front of your downtown DC hotel.
“To the airport and make it fast please.” You told the driver the second you got into the backseat, dumping the suitcase between your legs.
Lucky for you, traffic was flowing and the trip to the airport didn’t take too long, but you still checked the time every two seconds, your fingers thrumming nervously against the cab window.
Finally at the airport, you threw the money at the cab driver before jumping out of the car and running into the terminal, your eyes scanning the giant hall for the luggage service desk. The second you spotted it; you made your way over. Getting closer, you couldn’t ignore a deep, aggressive voice sounding over the usual buzz of the arrival hall.
“No, ma’am, no you listen to me now. This suitcase is of tremendous importance, the documents in there are incredibly valuable. I want it to be taken care of right now.”
The voice belonged to a man standing in front of the service counter, and judging by the way he was gesticulating, he was pretty angry. But what really drew your attention to the guy was what was next to him. Your suitcase. You ran towards it, dragging its identical twin behind you.
“Sir, excuse me, I think we both have something the other person could be interested in.” you panted, slightly breathless from running.
The man whirled around to face you, and for a moment you were totally struck by how handsome he was. He appeared to be several years older than you, but his grey hair, tall stature and commanding presence made for a really attractive appearance. Also, you couldn’t shake off the feeling that you had seen him before, but you couldn’t place him for the life of you. He looked at you for a brief moment before his eyes shot to the piece of luggage next to you.
“Oh, thank god.” He exclaimed, and almost yanked the suitcase out of your hands. "Next time, watch out whose luggage you’re taking.” He snapped. That’s rich, you thought, as if he hadn’t picked up the wrong one as well.
"Hey, no need to be rude.” You muttered, but he didn’t hear you, he was already back to talking the woman behind the service counter, hopefully explaining that everything was solved now and saving you some time. Your own suitcase was still standing next to the stranger, so you decided to just take it.
“You both still need to fill out this form, Ma’am, Sir.” The woman said, and both of you groaned but complied. After hastily scribbling down your details, you bid the lady goodbye and ran back to the cab rank.
The clock was ticking, you still had to get back to the city to make it to your interview in time. A quick look onto your watch confirmed your fears, it already was too late to go back to the hotel, you had to change in a restroom somewhere. You contemplated and decided to take a ride back into the city first and find an opportunity to change there before the commuters would block the freeway.
A cab was pulling up and you already made your way over when suddenly, the man who took your suitcase cut you in line and opened the door of the car. You were not having that, raising your voice to call him out.
“Hey, Mister, that was my cab. You better get in line.”
“I’m in a hurry, I have to be on air in an hour.” He snapped back, but you were unimpressed.
“You could be needed in the damn White House in an hour for all I care, I have a job interview, and this is my cab, so step back.” You were usually a patient person, but this guy has been testing you too much already. He raised his hands in a mock defensive gesture before speaking up again.
“Maybe we could split the cab. Where do you need to go?”
“CNN headquarters.” You replied reluctantly, it wasn’t like where you were headed was any of this mans concern.
“Interesting, that just happens to be my destination as well.” The stranger mused, now grinning at you. “So, how does splitting the cab sound?”
You begrudgingly agreed and sat down next to him in the backseat. As the engine started going, so did the wheels in your head. He had said that he had to be on air, and he needed to get to CNN as well. Oh…
“What did you say your name was again?” you asked, nervousness now fairly evident in your voice.
“It’s Jake. Tapper.” He said, mockingly extending his hand.
Well Shit. That’s why his face has been so oddly familiar.
You quickly introduced yourself as well, awkwardly shaking the offered hand.
“Sorry, I didn’t recognize you with those glasses.” You added meekly, feeling like dying of mortification. As it happened to be, the position you were aiming for was with the politics department of CNN, and while Tapper wasn’t your potential boss, he definitely was a big shot, being the lead Washington Anchor and everything. Great first impression.
“So, you said you have a job interview at CNN?” he asked, a hint of smugness in his voice. He could clearly sense your embarrassment. “Which department?”
You were definitely blushing now. “Politics.”
"Oh, well best of luck then, hopefully we’ll be colleagues soon.” He said, and you couldn’t make out if he was being serious or just messing with you.
The rest of the ride was spent in silence, you checked the notes you prepared for the interview one last time and if the man next to you was aware of what you were doing, he didn’t care, eyes glued to the screen of his phone. His presence did nothing to calm your fluttering nerves, your leg was twitching like crazy, and he noticed.
“Settle down.” He said quietly without looking up from his phone. His deep voice had a soothing effect, calming you for a brief moment.
When the cab pulled up in front of the CNN building, Jake got out first and held the door for you. Your nervousness came rushing back with a vengeance as you laid eyes on the big red sign over the entrance.
“When you get in, it’s the first elevator on the right, 5th floor.” Jake said, giving you a sharp nod before disappearing into the crowd filtering in and out of the huge glass doors. He could’ve at least said goodbye, you thought.
You quickly made your way inside, there was only half an hour remaining and you still had to find a spot to change, preferably one with a mirror because you certainly looked wild after all that running around. Luckily, there was a spacious restroom right next to the elevator and after you put on your work attire and a bit of makeup, you felt slightly better equipped for the task ahead of you.
+++
The interview went incredibly well, so well that you did a little happy dance on your way back to the elevator, the relief and hope for getting the job putting a pep in your step.
You rode back down to the lobby, where you decided to treat yourself with a nice caramel Frappuccino from the coffee cart. You were just about to get your purse out to pay when a familiar voice called out from behind you.
“Here, let me get this. And a black coffee please.”
Jake Tapper stepped up beside you and put the required money on the counter. He looked like he had just come off air, there was still a smudge of studio makeup on the collar of his dress shirt, and his hair was meticulously styled.
Again, his presence was slightly unsettling to you, even more so with him being in his anchor attire. Before you could reply anything, he grabbed your cup, which was almost overflowing with whipped cream and syrup, from the barista and handed it to you with a slightly disgusted expression on his face. “I wanted to pay for this atrocity of a beverage to make up for my rude behavior earlier, but now I’m doubtful if I’m really doing you a favor.”
“To be quite honest, I pity you for drinking black coffee while I can enjoy this.” You replied, taking a deep sip of the drink, sighting as its delicious sweetness covered your tongue. “But thank you.” You added. “Everything is forgiven, you were just as stressed out as I was.”
Jake watched you with an unreadable expression for a moment before he opened his mouth again. “Still, my apologies. The documents in the suitcase were of a very delicate nature, a source gave them to me, they could’ve caused quite some trouble in the wrong hands.” He paused for a moment, as if he was thinking of how to continue.
“Anyway, how did the interview go?” he asked, his voice bare of any teasing now.
“It went pretty well, I’d say. They told me I’m going to hear from them in about a week, which is good, that way I’d still have another three weeks to pack up my life in Phoenix and move here should they offer me the position.”
“Phoenix, huh.” Jake remarked, taking a sip from his own coffee. “That’s a long way. What made you decide to apply for a job that would require you to move all across the country?”

“Phoenix is great, but its Phoenix, you know. Things are different down there, slow-paced, you always feel like you’ll never be on the frontline, especially when it comes to covering politics. And DC is where the magic happens, so it was the only logical choice for me.” You replied.
“Well, I can’t argue with that. But make sure you’ll bring a coat with you should you get the job, compared to Phoenix, DC is artic.” Jake noted, the glint of humor making his eyes appear warm and open. He really looked handsome when he smiled, you noticed, there were little wrinkles around his eyes and his teeth were perfectly straight and white.
“I’ll keep that in mind, but I’m sure I’ll find something to keep myself warm once I’m here.” You said, looking directly at him. Somehow, this man brought out your flirtatious side.
He chuckled again, a low and pleasant sound. It sounded downright sexy, and you could feel a small shiver going down your spine. He and reached into the pocket of his suit jacket, retrieving a pen. He scribbled something onto one of the paper napkins that had come with your coffee order and handed it to you.
“If you get the job, just contact me and I’ll make sure you have every amenity you need to properly settle in.” he said, and by now he was blatantly flirting with you, something you did not mind at all.
“I’ll be sure to stay in touch, Mr. Tapper.” You spoke. “But I have to run now. Thanks for the drink.”
“Goodbye, Ms. Y/L/N. I’m looking forward to giving you the grand tour on your first day here. And it’s Jake, please.”
 +++
You got the job. The next weeks were a blur of goodbyes, moving boxes and apartment hunting. You barely had a moment to breathe, and it was only when you packed your final stuff into your black suitcase that you remembered Jake Tapper, and that you were supposed to contact him. You had kept the napkin with his number in your purse, and when you fished it out and dialed, your heart sped up, fluttering like a bird inside your chest.
You hung up before even hearing the first ring. What you were trying to achieve with this call? He had been clearly flirting with you back in DC, and now you were about to start working for the network he basically was the face of. And yes, he was funny and attractive, but getting tangled up with the big star before you even got a foot in the door there didn’t sound like the best idea.
You decided to let it slide. Your career came first now, you had worked too hard to let a fling get in the way of that.
 +++
The first day was a crazy whirlwind of impressions and faces, and when you finally settled into your little secluded work booth, you felt a tad overwhelmed by all the input. You were about to set up a little framed picture of your parents, when you felt someone approaching your desk. Before you could turn around, a coffee cup was placed in front of you, filled to the brim with whipped cream and all kinds of toppings and syrup.
“I didn’t remember your exact order, so I just requested the one that looked the most repugnant.” A deep voice said from behind you, and your heart started beating faster. It was Jake Tapper. “You didn’t call.” He stated. “I had to find out through the grapevine that you got the position.”
“Thank you for the coffee, this actually looks perfect. And I’m really sorry for not calling, the last weeks have been crazy, I just forgot.” You lied, trying to look as apologetic as possible.
He leaned onto the edge of your desk, his arm crossed in front of his chest. He looked really good, still in his casual clothes, his hair falling into his face. His dark eyes were fixed on you, and the look he was giving you was so intense that you felt your palms starting to get sweaty. You felt your resolve not to get involved with him crumble more with every minute in his presence.
“No offense taken.” He said, and the timbre of his voice made goosebumps break out on your arms. “Unfortunately, it’s already too late for me to give you the office tour. But let me make it up to you. Drinks, tonight after work?”
You decided to have some of fun with him, he was acting a bit too self-assured for your liking. You stretched your arms out above your head and let out a yawn. “Today was so busy, I just need to go home and get some sleep. But how about you ask me later again that week, maybe I’ll be free then.”
For a brief moment, Jakes eyes were transfixed on your thin blouse stretching over your chest, just like you intended. There was a voice in the back of your head, screaming at you to stop acting stupid and turn the man down. But you ignored it, he was too intriguing, too alluring to just send him away.
Jakes eyes snapped back to your face.
“I’m sure we can find another day. I’ll just visit you again.” He said, giving you another intense look.
“Sounds good for me. I have to finish unpacking everything now, but thanks again for the coffee.” You smiled cheekily, scooping up a dollop of whipped cream with your finger and sticking it into your mouth.
There was just the smallest hitch in Jakes breath, but you noticed. Strike, you thought gleefully. “I’ll see you around then.” He said, his voice slightly stained, before he disappeared in a hurry.
You leaned back into your chair with a smug grin, taking a deep sip of your hot beverage. That went surprisingly well. You pushed the nagging thought that getting into something with him was not a good idea aside. A couple of drinks wouldn’t hurt.
 +++
You felt a small sense of triumph when Jake already returned the next day.
“For a man who claimed to be so busy back at the airport, you certainly have a lot of free time to visit me.” You greeted him with a cheeky grin.
“I was on this floor, so I thought I’d stop by to say Hi.” Jake said. He was wearing his glasses today and it was doing crazy things to your body. You weren’t sure if you could reject another invitation, but still decided to play it cool.
“Well, lucky me, I guess. Hi. No coffee today?” you asked, giving him a little fake pout.
“I see, I already spoiled you.” Jake chuckled, but his eyes were affectionate.
“You could make it up to me, though, maybe by buying me a drink tonight after work?” The smile that flashed over Jakes face made you forget any regret you might have felt about giving in so soon. Being the reason he smiled like that felt really good.
“It would be my pleasure. I’ll be on air until five, so I pick you up here at six?”
“So you’re just assuming that I’m going to work overtime?“
“It’s your first week on the job, of course you work overtime.” Jake shot back, grinning.
He was right, of course, you still had to learn your way around the department, so you decided to stay an hour longer each day to get the hang on everything.
“Just be here at six, smart arse.” You joked, and instantly regretted it, afraid you were being overly comfortable with Jake. But he just winked at you and walked away, a slight spring in his step.
 +++
Jake was punctual, picking you up from your booth at six sharps. He was acting like a real gentleman, holding the door to the office, the cab and the bar he picked out, a cozy place in downtown DC, away from Capitol Hill and the possibility of running into someone familiar.
The black suit he was wearing and the martini he had ordered gave Jake a very James-Bond-like look that you enjoyed immensely. You made a terrible “shaken, not stirred” joke that, miraculously, still made him laugh. Conversation was surprisingly easy, Jake could contribute something to basically any topic you broached. His vast knowledge of…well, everything was simultaneously sexy and intimidating, something that could be applied to his whole persona.
It wasn’t like he was a completely different person than on his show, his sharp observations and cutting sarcasm were still very much there, making you a bit hesitant to voice all your opinions freely. But there also was a lighter side to him that didn’t appear on television. For example, he was a huge nerd. You just uttered “Star Wars” a single time and spent the next twenty minutes listening to his detailed ranking of the entire movie franchise. At first, you were just feigning interest, but he was so passionate about the topic that you couldn’t help but get interested. When you confessed that you had never seen a Star Wars movie before, Jake wasn’t having it.
“Ok, this can’t stand. Friday, my place, were watching Star Wars. I can’t let you run around that uneducated.” He replied, and your heart took up pace like a racehorse. Going to his place was a huge step after just one date and really knowing each other for only three days. But as much as you wanted to decline, you wanted nothing more than to spend some more time with this man, against all reservations you had.
“I have a master’s degree from Brown, don’t call me uneducated.” you said, reaching out to playfully slap his arm. But he caught your wrist mid-air, making blood rush to your face because of the grip of his fingers against your skin.
“Careful, Y/N.” he murmured. Why was his voice suddenly so deep and sensual? Your eyes met, and for a second, the air was buzzing between the two of you. Then Jake let go of your hand, and the moment was over. But you could still feel a lingering prickle at where his skin had touched yours.
“So, what do you say?” He asked, his voice back to its normal tone. You had to decide quickly, not about watching Star Wars but about what kind of message to send to Jake. Coming over to his place was a risk, were you ready to take it?
He looked at you, waiting for you to say something, and his eyes were so damn hopeful.
“Sure, why not. But there better be snacks.” You replied. Here goes nothing.
  +++
It was Friday, and you stood in front of Jake Tappers apartment door, a bottle of wine clutched in your sweaty hand. You weren’t sure what one was supposed to bring for a Star Wars movie night, so you decided on a white wine you liked to buy for yourself.
A moment after you rung the doorbell, Jake was already there, almost as if he had been waiting behind the door. You smiled at him, presenting the bottle.
“I hope you like white wine.” you said. Wow, what a lamer starter, you thought. But Jake graciously took the bottle and stepped aside to let you enter the apartment.
“I love white wine, thank you very much.” He said, sounding genuine.
His flat was nice, clean and surprisingly void of clutter. You had never been to his office but back at the bar he had talked about collecting a lot of historical stuff back, he obviously kept all of that at work. There was a nice, comfortable looking sofa, but it was the table in front of you that made your eyes light up.
“Oh my god, Jake, this is snack heaven! You really outdid yourself.” You exclaimed, beaming at him. There were chips, dips, popcorn, chocolate covered pretzels and even jellybeans.
“You said you wanted snacks.” Jake said, matter-of-factly and you took a moment to really look at him. He was dressed casually today, wearing a grey jumper that looked incredibly soft, and jeans. Overall, he looked fantastic, and you could feel your heart starting to beat faster when you were thinking about sitting close to him on the sofa.
“How about you make yourself comfortable, I’m going to pour us some wine and then we can get started.” Jake said, disappearing into the kitchen. You sat down on the sofa, it was really cozy. You had to keep yourself from snuggling back into the cushions, reminding yourself that you were not at home here and this was still very much Jake Tappers apartment. A moment later, the man himself came back, carrying two glasses of wine that he put down in front of you on a small spot of the table that wasn’t occupied by snacks.
He sat down next to you, keeping a respectful distance.
“So, we are going to start with the fourth movie, which is actually the first movie that was filmed back in 1978, they made three prequels later but nobody that considers themself a true Star Wars fan would introduce someone to the franchise by watching part one.” Jake explained. Seeing him so passionate about this was really endearing, even if you weren’t a hundred percent sure what he was talking about.
“You have my complete and total trust in this matter, I am here to learn.” You joked, and Jakes responding chuckle made warmth bloom in your belly.
The movie was really good, you were intrigued by the characters and the storyline, but what was even better was watching the film with Jake. Some people were annoyed by others talking during a movie, but you enjoyed the occasional fun fact immensely, and Jake was a walking encyclopedia of Star Wars trivia.
“Did you know that the guy who did Darth Vader’s voice and the actor who played him never actually met?”
“During the trash compactor scene, Mark Hamill held his breath for so long that a blood vessel in his face popped, that’s why they only took shots from one side, pay attention to it and you will notice.”
You quietly munched your popcorn while he was talking, watching him with keen interest bothering on fascination. Star Wars fan Jake was glorious in his nerdiness. How was this the same man that was ripping apart politicians every day on television and had snapped at you at the airport?
“I’m sure someone told you this before, but you a such a nerd.” You grinned, playfully throwing a piece of popcorn at him.
“I consider myself the nerd king.” He declared, voice so deadly serious that you couldn’t stop yourself from bursting out laughing. Jake turned around to look at you. Why was his face so mesmerizing? And why was he suddenly sitting so close to you?
“Your laugh is beautiful.” He said quietly. And then he was kissing you. Your brain tried to catch up and make sense of the sudden new development, but Jakes lips were too soft and his hand on your tight to warm and heavy for you to focus on anything else. You responded enthusiastically, tilting your head to deepen the kiss and wrapping your arms around his neck. His tongue slid across your bottom lip, teasing you until you opened your mouth.
His hands were on your hips now, pulling you closer until you were sitting on his lap. He leaned into the back of the sofa and slid his palms down your sides until they settled on your ass. You started to softly grind your hips into his and your body went into overdrive as you felt the evidence of how much he was enjoying the kiss pressed against your core through your jeans.
“Jake.” You moaned against his mouth. “What about the movie?”
“Fuck the movie.” He whispered, attacking your lips again, his hands squeezing your ass.
Breaking the kiss, you brought some distance between your faces to look at him with mock indignation.
“Don’t let your nerd friends hear that.”
“My nerd friends would tell me to shut up about Star Wars when a woman like you is sitting on my lap.” Jake responded with a smirk, and you couldn’t argue with that.
He kissed you again, and needless to say, you didn’t finish the movie.
Jake took you to his bed instead, slowly undressing you, kissing and touching every inch of your skin he could reach in the process. He slid between your legs, entering you in one fluid motion and your hands stayed tangled in his hair as you moved against each other. His eyes never left yours, and from the way he looked at you, you knew that this was something real. When you hit your peak, your guttural cry of Jakes name was all it took for him to follow you over the edge.
Afterwards, you snuggled up against him and silently thanked the fates that you had picked up that wrong suitcase.
(about 6 months later)

“I can’t believe ours really are the last ones.” You groaned, leaning onto Jake while stifling a yawn. “I just want to go home.”
“You slept the whole flight, Y/N, and I’m sure the luggage will be here any moment. Patience, love.” Jake replied, sounding rather tired himself.
You had just arrived from Barbados, your first holiday together. It had been amazing, nothing but eating, swimming and relaxing for two weeks. But it was the middle of the night now, and you had already been waiting at the baggage claim for thirty minutes.
“Just stay here and let me lean on you and I’ll be fine. You have to watch me anyway, not that some grumpy, hot stranger mistakes my luggage for his and I meet him at the service desk and fall irrevocably in love with him because of that.” You said, letting out a soft chuckle.
Jake just wrapped his arm around you, pulling you tightly against his chest.
“That’s why I got you that nice red suitcase for your birthday, can’t let that happen again.”

“You look horrible. “Abby stated matter-of-factly as she sat down in the restaurant chair across from you.
“I missed you too, great to see you, thanks. “you responded, not even bothering to argue with her.
Abby was your best friend since college, if she said you looked horrible it was either a joke or a fact. Considering the way she was looking at you, probably the latter.
“Hard week at work?”
You let out a tired huff.
“You have no idea. We got this new client who booked us for a nation-wide tv ad, and they’re so incredibly demanding. I’ve been working overtime for three weeks straight, it’s a miracle they didn’t call me in today.”
Your monthly Saturday brunch with Abby was sacred, work be damned.
Your friend was giving you a worried look across the table. “Well, I’m glad they didn’t, you deserve a day off.”
“Enough of my sad life, how is it going over at Fake News?” you joked.
“Amazing actually. You won’t believe it, but I’ve heard through the grapevine that they’re thinking about offering me John’s Sunday spot on Inside Politics. Can you imagine, my own hour, as an actual anchor. It’s nothing official yet, but I’m so excited.”
“Oh my god, Abby, that’s awesome. I’m so proud of you. We should celebrate.” you exclaimed, beckoning a waiter to order two glasses of champagne.
Abby gave you a warm smile.
“Thank you, babe. But let me be honest, I’m worried about you. You look exhausted, even your voice sounds tired. When was the last time you did something actually relaxing?”
“I’ve watched a movie, like, a week ago. And I do yoga, at least sometimes.” You tried to argue, not entirely sure if you wanted to convince Abby or yourself.
A smirk settled over your friend’s face, and she looked at you like she just had the most brilliant idea ever. You did not like that look at all, it usually meant trouble.
“Well todays your lucky day, because I know just what you need to de-stress a bit.”
You just raised an eyebrow at her.
“Care to elaborate, genius?”
“You, my friend, need to get laid.”

You snorted. “Fun times, Abbs, you almost got me,”

“I’m serious, Y/N, when was the last time you had sex?”
“Okay, it’s been a while, but I’m fine. I don’t need a man to interfere with the little free time I have. And it’s not like the streets are full of men chasing me. I don’t have time to date, and, like I said, I’m totally fine with the way things are at the moment.” You tried your very best not to sound defensive.
The expression on Abby’s face told you everything you needed to know. She didn’t buy a single word coming out of your mouth.
“Y/N, trust me when I tell you, blowing off a little steam would do wonders for your stress level. And maybe you’d even meet someone nice. And, lucky for you, I know just the guy. He’s someone I work with, and I think you’d get along perfectly.”
“You’re not actually suggesting setting me up on a blind date.” You couldn’t believe your friend. The last thing you needed was an evening full of awkward small talk with some boring, sleek CNN guy.
“Come on, Y/N, take a leap of faith. What’s the worst thing that could happen?”
+++
 (One week later)
“I can’t believe I actually agreed.” You murmured to yourself as you rummaged through your closet, looking for an outfit to wear on that damned date Abby bullied you into.
You thought about the peaceful evening you could have had, curled up on the sofa with a glass of wine, maybe getting some work done.
But it was too late to back down now.
“Let’s just get this over with” you told yourself, applying some lipstick as if it was war paint. “Let’s hope that the guy is at least good-looking.”
The restaurant Abby sent you to was nice enough, a small and intimate place, perfect for a date. You couldn’t wait to have your first glass of wine, because you could feel your nervousness increasing with each passing minute.
You entered the restaurant, looking for the third table on the window side that Abby had described to you…and directly turned around, practically fleeing through the door again as soon as you set eyes on the man sitting there.
Back outside, you took your phone out of your bag and furiously dialed Abby’s number. She picked up right away, but you were shouting at her before she could even say a word.
“You better tell me that you did not set me up with Jake fucking Tapper.”
Was she out of her mind? This was the Jake Tapper, the face of CNN, hell, the face of the media in this country. What the fuck were you supposed to talk to him about.
But your friend just chuckled at you through the phone.
“When you saw him on TV some months ago, you said he was your type. Plus, he’s intelligent, funny, and single. Perfect for you. And now stop making a fool out of yourself and go in there. You got this, girl. Love you, bye.”
And with that, she hung up.
You took a deep breath and tried to calm your nerves. You could not just leave now, and stand up Mr. Breaking News himself. So you pocketed your phone again, squared your shoulders and went back into the restaurant.
You made your way over to the table, coming to a stop in front of it. The man sitting there looked up to you and smiled. And wow, what a beautiful smile it was, sincere, warm and inviting, taking over his entire face.
“Hi.” You said, trying to sound confident.
“I’m Y/N, Abby’s friend.”

“It’s so nice to meet you, I’m Jake. I’m working with Abby, but she probably already told you that much.”

“She did, but I’ll be honest, I know you, of course. Big fan of your show.”
God, why did you just say that. He was probably going to think you were some kind of crazy fangirl now.
But he just continued to smile his open, friendly smile at you.
“Always happy to hear that.” He chuckled, pointing to the opposite chair. “Do you want to sit down?”
“Yes, of course, sorry.” You said, feeling silly because you totally forgot that you were still standing. You quickly sat down and tried your best to appear calm and collected, even if your insides were in turmoil.
“Would you care for some wine? They have a pretty impressive list, I could pick one for us if you don’t mind.” Jake asked.
“Wine sounds fantastic. I love it, but I’m not really an expert, so go ahead.”
Jake took some reading glasses out of the pocket of his suit jacket and put them on his nose.
While he was studying the wine list, you took your time to study him instead. He appeared to be in his late forties, so there was an age difference of probably 15 to 20 years. You didn’t mind that at all, older men had always been more your type.
He had a really handsome face, kind eyes that looked even better when he had those glasses on, and you loved his salt-and-pepper hair. He was wearing a light blue dress shirt with a dark grey suit jacket. You caught your mind wandering to how he might look underneath his clothes and gave yourself a mental slap on the wrist. This was your first date, no need to get ahead of yourself.
“Everything alright over there?”
Shit, he had caught you staring.
“Yes, sorry, I zoned off for a moment. I had a stressful week at work.”

“Oh, yes, Abby told me you’re working in advertising. Any interesting projects at the moment?”
You went on and chatted about work a bit. You were fascinated by what he was doing, and taken aback by the confident, yet humble way he was talking about it. This was absolutely not the behavior you were expecting from the leading anchorman of the nations most renowned network. He wasn’t arrogant or self-centered at all and you were definitely charmed.
The wine Jake ordered arrived with your starters, and soon after you had your first few sips you felt some of the initial nervousness fading away.
Soon, the conversation was flowing freely, and you discovered that Abby was right, you really did get along perfectly. Jake was incredibly funny in a dry and witty way and his sarcastic remarks made you laugh more than once. You also discovered your shared interest in graphic novels and argued a while about weather DC or Marvel was the superior comic universe.
Jake showed you one of his own cartoons on his phone, and with each moment you found yourself more drawn to the man in front of you.
At some point his hand started to lightly brush against yours on the table, and each touch sent a warm feeling through your chest.
You talked some more over dessert, had some more wine and overall, a really good time.
The alcohol gave you a pleasant, fuzzy feeling, and the desire to just get up and crawl on Jakes lap grew with each look he gave you.
“Excuse me, Ma’am, Sir, were closing up now.” A passing waiter told you and put the check on the table.
“Let me take care of that, please.” Jake said, taking out his wallet. You just thanked him and enjoyed the view of him putting on his glasses again to read the check.
He really was a perfect gentleman, you thought to yourself, as he got up to hold your coat and then the door for you on your way out.

“I really had a wonderful evening.” you said softly, as the both of you were standing on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant. Jake shot you another one of his brilliant smiles, and you could feel your heart beating faster.
“Me too.” He replied. “I really enjoyed spending time with you, and I’d like to see you again.”
Now your heart was almost jumping out of your chest, and you could feel your own smile taking over your face.
“I’d love that.”
Jake took one step closer, now standing so close you could almost feel the warmth radiating off his body. One of his hands came up to tuck a lock of hair behind your ear, his thumb slowly stroking over your jaw. His touch sent goosebumps all over your skin, and you slightly parted your lips, looking him directly in the eyes. They were warm, and dark, and you felt like you could get lost in them. And then he leaned down and pressed a kiss to your mouth.
It felt incredible, a kind of warmth that was totally unrelated to the wine spreading through your body, your skin prickling where his hand was still on your face.
You put your hands on his arms and kissed him back, enjoying the feeling of his soft lips against yours. He still tasted slightly like red wine, and you wanted nothing more than to explore the rest of his body with your mouth just as thoroughly.
First date, you reminded yourself, and broke free from the kiss before your lust-clouded brain could make you do something you might regret later. You glanced up at Jake, who looked at you with an unreadable expression. Then, after what felt like forever, he finally spoke.
“Could I maybe have your number?”

“Of course.” You said, with maybe a bit much enthusiasm, but Jake didn’t seem to mind. You quickly typed your number into his phone, and just as you were finished, the cab you had called earlier was arriving.
Jake held the door open for you, and shot you one last, beautiful smile. “Good night, Y/N, get home safe.”
“Thank you for the wonderful evening, Jake. Good night.”
You closed the door and the taxi drove off. You already missed his face as soon as he was out of sight, and you turned around to watch his receding figure through the rear window of the taxi.
Great, you were already down bad after one date. The man really got to you, and you desperately hoped that you would hear from him soon.
As soon as you were home, you really felt the effects of the wine, so you quickly went to bed to get some sleep. Just before you were nodding off, you sent Abby a quick message.

You were right, he is perfect. THANKS xxxx

When Abby answered five minutes later, you were already asleep.
 Told you so ;) xxxx
+++
When you woke up the next morning, there was a new message from an unknown number on your phone. Your heart made a flip in your chest, and you opened it as fast as you could.

Hi, this is Jake. It’s probably way too soon to text you, but I just wanted to let you know, again, what a great time I had yesterday. If you’d be up to it, I’d really like to see you again soon. Let me know if that would be alright with you. And have a nice Saturday :)

He had already texted you. That meant he didn’t think that you were crazy, or awkward, and that he wasn’t just acting nice, he genuinely wanted to see you again. You were filled with a giddy sort of happiness, and decided to answer him right away, there was no need to play any games here. Leap of faith, just like Abby said.

Good Morning Jake, I really enjoyed yesterday as well. I’d love to spend some more time together; would tomorrow evening be too spontaneous? I could make dinner, to return the favor since you paid yesterday ;) my place at eight?

As soon as you hit the send button you started getting anxious again. What if tomorrow was too soon? What if he thought you were being too eager?
“Stop it, Y/N!” you said out loud to interrupt your mental spiral. You wouldn’t make a fool out of yourself for this man, even if he was handsome, and intelligent, and funny. No way.
But as you were standing in the kitchen five minutes later and heard your phone chiming from the other room, you were there in the matter of seconds to read the new message.

Tomorrow sounds perfect, just text me the address. I’ll bring the wine. xx Jake

You clutched your phone to your chest, the biggest, goofy smile on your face.
You spent the remaining day extensively cleaning your flat, stressing out, going grocery shopping and stressing out some more. You face-timed Abby and bullied her into helping you pick out an outfit, since she technically was the one who got you into this mess in the first place.
Jake was occupying your mind whatever you did, and when you finally got into your bed that night, all you could think about was how his lips had felt against yours. Those thoughts sent a hot, burning feeling down between your legs and when you finally touched your pussy, you were already so wet and aroused that it only took you minutes until you reached your peak, Jakes name falling from your lips.
+++
To say you were a nervous wreck the next day would be an understatement. When you woke up, you decided to watch some TV to get yourself a bit of distraction. An ad was currently playing, and so you decided to check your mails first.

“Good Morning from Washington, where the State of our Union is in turmoil over the latest…”

Your head snapped up at the sound of the familiar voice coming from your TV, the voice that occupied your mind ever since your blind date on Friday. You had totally forgotten that Sunday morning meant Jake Tapper time on CNN, because usually you were either asleep or at work at 9 am. But now you took your time to really appreciate the man on your TV.
He looked way more serious than the Jake you got to know, no smile, just a stern expression and a dark suit and tie. Which didn’t mean that he wasn’t looking totally hot, and his intelligent and sharp remarks did nothing to calm your fluttering heart or the heat in your lower abdomen. You definitely wanted him, bad.

This is getting ridiculous, you thought to yourself, and turned the TV off to take a very long shower.
Afterwards, you spent the whole day pacing around your flat and annoying Abby with numerous text messages and another two face time calls. She assured you multiple times that everything would be just fine and by the time it was 7:45 p.m. the food was in the oven and you sat on your couch, waiting for the doorbell to ring.
When it finally did, you all but ran to the door only to stop and force yourself to take a couple of calming breaths before opening it. Jake stood outside, a bottle of red wine in his hand. He looked amazing with his white dress shirt and dark grey slacks, but again it was his smile that got your attention, he looked just as happy to see you as you were feeling.
Out of a sudden impulse, you surged forward and threw your arms around the man, hugging him and burying your head in his chest. He seemed surprised, but still put his free arm around you, embracing you.
“Hi.” You whispered, suddenly shy, but as you looked up to meet Jakes eyes you could see nothing but warmth in them. “Hi.” He replied, pressing a kiss to your hair. “It’s good to see you.”
You slowly let go of him so he could actually enter your apartment. He followed you inside and you fetched some glasses for the wine. You talked about everything and anything over dinner, family, football, the book Jake was working on. You listened closely, and so did he as you told him about your passion for art and music. He even asked you to put some of your favorite records on as you moved over to the couch after dinner.
You were still talking animatedly but having Jake in closer physical proximity made it increasingly hard to focus on what he was saying.
Instead, your eyes and mind wandered to his hands. Without thinking, you reached out and put one of your hands into his, He stopped speaking, and looked at you. You could see the kind look in his eyes being replaced by something darker, more passionate.
He spoke again, voice lower this time. “I’ve been thinking about you and our kiss without a break since yesterday. And just as long I’ve wanted to kiss you again, touch you again.”
He reached out, cupped your jaw with one of his hands and slowly ran his thumb over your bottom lip. It took every willpower you had not to suck his thumb into your mouth. This man had you hot and aching for him with just a single touch and a couple of words.
“Is that something you want me to do, Y/L?” his voice was only a low rumble now.

“Oh my god yes. Yes please.” You whispered, not really trusting your own voice to come out steady enough.
The hand on your face slid to the back of your head and you uttered a surprised gasp as Jake just grabbed a fist of your hair and pulled you close, until your faces were only inches apart.
“You are beautiful.” He said, looking you deep in the eyes.
And then he kissed you again. And as soon as his mouth connected with yours, you realized just how much you had missed the feeling of his lips, the warmth of his body. But that was where the resemblance to the kiss you shared last night ended. Because this one was more.
More passion, more lust. Jake softly bit your bottom lip and used your surprised gasp as an opportunity to slide his tongue into your mouth. The kiss deepened and you could feel small sparks of arousal all over your body with every touch of tongue and every time he lightly tugged on the hair in the nape of your neck.
Your hands found their way around Jakes shoulders, roaming up and down his back. You were really glad he was not wearing his full State Of The Union Outfit, even if it had looked extremely hot, because as soon as you could feel the solid muscle through his thin dress shirt, you knew that those clothes had to come off at some point.
You lightly tugged on the hem of his shirt to pull it out of his pants and spread your hands over the warm skin underneath. Jake broke the kiss as soon as he could feel what you did, just to tilt back your head and kiss your exposed neck.
You couldn’t stifle a moan as he lightly sucked on your pulse point.
The feeling of his mouth on your skin made heat coil between your legs, and you tried to shift even closer to him, until you were almost sitting on his lap.
Jake continued to kiss your neck, while his other hand crept under your shirt to palm your breast through your bra. He lightly squeezed it and you moaned again, you nails raking softly over his back, making him groan against your skin.
“You like that?” he asked, and pinched one of your nipples through the thin fabric of your bra, and you could feel your panties getting soaked with arousal.
You decided that it was time to get rid of some clothing and started to quickly unbutton Jakes dress shirt, revealing more and more skin with each button undone. As soon as you were finished, he pulled the shirt of his shoulders and the view of his body made your mouth water. You ran your hands over his muscled chest, and you could see the way his eyes darkened again.
“I can’t wait to touch you everywhere.” He said in a husky voice and pulled your shirt over your head in a swift motion, and instantly his lips were on yours again, his hands roaming over your back, unclasping your bra. When your nipples came in contact with the skin of his chest, you couldn’t contain yourself anymore.
“Jake, please. Touch me, kiss me, anything. I need to feel you.” You pleaded, your voice slightly breathless.

“Take the rest of your clothes off, now.” Jake said, his commanding tone sending another surge of wetness between your legs.
You got up from the sofa and stood in front of Jake. Slowly, you opened the zipper of your jeans and pulled them down, leaving you only in your black lace panties.
Jake was watching you, his intense stare burning on your skin.
“Everything. Off.” He said, never breaking eye contact.
Having the undivided attention of this man was so hot, you almost got lightheaded.
You slowly dragged your underwear down your legs, and as you were looking up again, you saw that Jake was palming the bulge that had begun to form in his pants. You wanted to touch him so bad.
“You are gorgeous. Amazing. Beautiful. Stunning.” Jake said, taking in the sight of your naked body. His voice was strained, this was clearly affecting him.
A light flush was beginning to form on your skin, you weren’t sure if it was because of arousal or embarrassment, but you definitely knew that you needed Jake to get his hands on your body, now.
You made your way over to him again and leaned down to open the fly of his trousers. His briefs were already tented by his erection, and you palmed him through his underwear, making him groan.
“Those need to come off.” You whispered, smiling at Jake, who just nodded and lifted his pelvis so you could pull down his trousers along with his underwear.
Finally, he was naked in front of you. He grabbed you by your waist and pulled you down on the sofa, lying on top of you. The feeling of his warm skin against yours was thrilling, you tried to get your hands on every part of his body you could reach, stroking his back, pulling his hair. Finally, you wrapped your hand around the base of his hard cock, giving it some light strokes.
“You feel so good, Y/N, I’ve been thinking about doing this since I first laid my eyes on you. I’ve been in a state since we kissed, and now” he whispered against your neck „I can’t wait to finally have that sweet pussy of yours.”
You couldn’t believe the words coming out of Jakes mouth, hearing him say filthy things like that was turning you on more than you could’ve ever imagined. Obviously, your thoughts were written all over your face.
“You like it when I talk like that, don’t you, sweetheart.” He said, pinching one of your nipples as he did.
“I…Oh shit, yes, yes I do. Please.” You whimpered, almost going you crazy with the need to finally feel him.
He had mercy on you, reaching out between your legs. When he touched your pussy for the first time, you felt like the pent-up tension could make you faint any moment.
“God, you’re so wet, Y/N.” He thrust two of his long fingers into you without warning, and you almost screamed.
“And so tight.”
“I need you, please Jake, fuck me.” You were begging now, way beyond caring about any sort of decorum as his digits touched that sweet spot inside of you again and again.
He withdrew his fingers and shifted on top of you before he put his hands on your tights, spreading your legs. You couldn’t even begin to complain about the loss of his fingers, he was already lining up his cock with your entrance, and pushed in, slowly, filling you inch by inch until he bottomed out with a deep groan. His length stretched you in the most delicious way, and you cried out as he was starting to thrust in and out of you, leaving you almost no time to adjust to his size.
You couldn’t talk coherently anymore, you were just chanting his name over and over as he was fucking you into the sofa. Your nails clawed into his back as he was leaning over you, his hair falling into his face. Just as you thought you couldn’t feel any more pleasure, he grabbed one of your legs and probed it onto his shoulder, the new angle making you see stars with every move of his hips.
“You feel incredible, so tight and warm around me, you are amazing.” He looked down on you, taking in your face, squinted with pleasure, his name falling from your lips over and over again.
He reached between your legs and started rubbing your clit, never slowing down his relentless, hard thrusts. The combined stimulation was almost too much for you and your orgasm was approaching fast.
“Don’t stop, please, just don’t stop.” You cried out, the pleasure running through your body like a wildfire.
“Look at me when you come, I want to see you. Look at me!” Jake growled, breathing hard as he sped up even more.
You hit your peak with a cry, sparks dancing over your skin as your walls clenched around Jakes cock. Your eyes were fixed on his, and he looked at you like you were the only person on the entire planet.
Seeing you come undone beneath him, Jake only lasted for another few deep thrusts before he came, shouting your name and spilling his hot release inside of you.
He laid on top of you afterwards, his face on your shoulder, breathing deeply. You pressed a soft kiss to his cheek, and he turned his head to look at you.
“Hi” you said.
“Hi” he replied, your favorite smile spreading across his face again.
“I liked that very much.” You said, pressing another kiss to his lips. He chuckled and propped himself up onto his arms with a small sight, rolling off you. Luckily, your sofa was large enough so you could comfortably lie next to each other.
“Me too, that was fantastic.” He replied and pulled you closer, putting his arm around you. You buried your face into his chest, soaking up the heat of his body and his wonderful smell.
“Maybe you should come over more often.” You suggested, sounding a bit nervous again. You didn’t want to appear clingy. But this man had just rocked your world, and you couldn’t just act like nothing happened.
“I’ll come over whenever you want me to, sweetheart. Consider me at your beck and call.”
“Stay the night?” you asked in a hopeful voice. You had work in the morning, but you just couldn’t imagine letting him go anywhere now.
He just nodded, smiled, and kissed you again. That soft, tingly feeling in your chest increased even more, and you just happily snuggled up to him.
Later, as Jake was already asleep next to you, you took up your phone and sent a quick text message to Abby.
Next brunch is my treat! I owe you xxxx
