5 Short Fic Recs for Friday
going through some family medical nightmare so didn't really have time to check out a lot of new fic. also blog is on queue sorry if i missed any mentions and stuff. hope to be back when life gets better! anyway this week's recs! mostly old fic rereads.
The Concentration of Salt in Fresh Water (After the Deluge) by Jay Tryfanstone. Ginny/Giant Squid. 100 words. Drabble. The writing feels so atmospheric and evocative. I am really on a Tryfanstone binge at the moment and loving it. Especially love the prose and the storytelling creativity. Definitely on the LJ fandom prose style side.Which can be pretty different from modern styles. YMMV. Wishes unwritten rise like bubbles to the surface. Some – don’t burst.
2. October by ashesasheshackles. 3 Drabbles. 300 words. The first drabble is a super sharp character study of Barty Crouch Jr. Really precise and powerful. Even without the costume of another's flesh, even if it was his own bones that propped him up, his father would have failed to see him.
3. Devotion by Anonymous. 26000 words. Complete. Snarry a thon 2023 fest collection. Snarry fic. Intense/dirty bad/hot/wrong. Exactly what I want from my Snarry! Though the worst crime of all is Potter’s. "Did you want to die?" Also The boy knows — he knows — he can take anything he wants. That bitter surrender is surrender all the same. That the force of Severus’ loathing is fed by his longing.
4. Ouroboros by eldritcher. 26500 words. Complete. One of their older fics which got reposted on AO3. Omg. The level of whoa! in this fic. Dysfunctional John Wick Voldemort wins, gets his revenge and ofc victory is totally pointless. When he understands that he gets depressed. Like really depressed. Like Kafka levels of depressed. Voldemort seducing Narcissa ftw. Voldemort pimping out Narcissa to get Snape's loyalty even more ftw. Honestly this fic was a total feverdream. Its not really a pairing fic. More of a Voldemort character study. It was a gentle game from then. I saw to Narcissa every day, cocooned her in pleasure and safety, and softly snuffed out her devotion to her husband. Lucius, poor Lucius, was too proper to pleasure his wife as she desired. I, on the other hand, had spent my childhood in the alleys of London’s East End.
5. charitable explorations by oh_gilderory. This is a Wolfstar comic with Trans Sirius Black. Complete. From the HP Trans fest 2023 collection. Short and sweet. Modern AU. Streamer Sirius. Kind of blurry and i had to zoom a lot on my kindle. but idk maybe that's just my kindle. But definitely wanted to share it because I loved it.

We love you. Wash your hands.
Tumblr media
Artemis & Assassin #1 - Stephanie Phillips, Meghan Hetrick, & Francesca Fantini
What happens when a time-traveling assassin and a spy from 1944 try to kill each other? For a price, a top-secret assassination organization will travel through time and interfere with watershed moments. Trained as the agency's top assassin, Maya is sent to kill Virginia Hall, the deadliest spy of WWII. Charged with carrying important plans about the invasion of Normandy to the Allied troops, Virginia's death would have a cataclysmic effect on WWII as we know it.
Tumblr media
X-Ray Robot #1 (of 4) - Mike Allred, Laura Allred  and Nate Piekos
Max is a family man seeking a more interesting life. While conducting a new experiment at work, the fabric of his reality is torn before his eyes, and a robotic figure appears, claiming to be his 277-year-old self. The robot is able to "X-Ray" multiple dimensions and battles a nihilistic entity from another dimension who wants to take all life to its "Pre-Big Bang" status.  Max and the robot embark on an interdimensional roadtrip through past and future to take down the "Nihilist" and save the universe!
Tumblr media
Hexagon #1 (of 5) - Michael Moreci & Jheremy Raapack
It's the 1980s and all twelve-year-old Don wants to do is play video games at the local arcade. Don's father, however, refuses to let him play. Egged on by his friends and trying to impress a girl, Don sneaks out to join an all-night game-a-thon. Defying the odds (and on his first quarter ever!), Don beats Crucible, a game long considered unbeatable. In an instant, his world is turned upside down when his victory triggers an alien invasion and sucks him into an intergalactic battle that has been raging for years, a battle his father was desperately trying to protect him from!
Tumblr media
Wicked Things #1 - John Allison & Max Sarin
Nineteen year old Charlotte Grote has her whole life ahead of her; headed straight to Oxford and a future as a real detective-until she's framed for murder! Given the choice between going to jail basically forever or joining the police, Lottie decides to hit the beat, all while trying to find the real murderer. Lottie may have been running rings about the police since her 9th birthday, but she's never been on this side of the security tape. Could the future of law enforcement be 5'2" with an extremely strong bangs game? Yes. Very yes.
Tumblr media
Hotell #1 (of 4) - John Lees & Dalibor Talajic
You won't find it on any map, but if you happen to be driving down Route 66 late at night and  you're truly desperate for shelter, sanctuary or secrecy, you might see a battered sign on the side of the road: The Pierrot Courts Hotel. - where many check in but few check out.
Tumblr media
Starship Down #1 (of 4) - Justin Giampaoli & Andrea Mutti
A cultural anthropologist consults with US Naval Intelligence to investigate the discovery of an extraterrestrial ship buried under the ice for thousands of years in Siberia. Tumblr media
Outlawed #1 - Eve Ewing & Kim Jacinto

Tumblr media
Spider-Woman #1 - Karla Pacheco & Pere Perez
Jessica Drew hasn't been feeling like herself lately (she's not a Skrull, we promise). When the angry, irritable, and unwell Spider-Woman takes a simple security gig to help get back on her feet, she finds herself besieged by unknown forces out to destroy everything around her. What's wrong with Jessica? Just how DID she get this job? And who are these violent lunatics who keep trying to blow her up? WHO CARES? Does Spider-Woman have someone to punch? THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS.
Tumblr media
Red Border #1 (of 4) - Jason Starr, Will Conrad, and Ivan Nunes
A young Mexican couple narrowly escapes the Juarez Cartel by fleeing across the border into Texas, only to be run down in the desert by the Cartel's most brutal thugs. Trapped in a house of horrors beyond their wildest imagination, the army of assassins on their trail might be the least of their problems.
Tumblr media
Robin 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular - Marv Wolfman, Tom Grummett & Various
DC Comics celebrates Robin the Boy Wonder's 80th anniversary in style with an all-star creative team representing each iteration of the iconic character across eight decades of history! From the high-flying adventures of Dick Grayson to the tragedy of Jason Todd, the enthusiasm of Tim Drake and the arrogance of Damian Wayne, the persistence of Stephanie Brown and the rebelliousness of Carrie Kelley-the mantle of Robin has been worn by many, but always represents one thing: a hero.
Tumblr media
Resistance #1 (of 6) - J. Michael Straczynski & Mike Deodato
J. Michael Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5 and writer of beloved runs on The Amazing Spider-Man, Thor, and Superman: Earth One, returns to comics teaming with Mike Deodato Jr., the blockbuster artist of The Amazing Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Infinity Wars. Together they plant the flag for a new universe of heroes and villains. A global disaster leaves hundreds of millions dead in its wake. Shortly after, a few thousand suddenly manifest superhuman powers. Are they harbingers of more perils to come...or Earth's last hope?
Whatcha grabbing this week, Fantomites?

Ship-a-thon
Tagged by @cullenlovesmen, thank you!
Tagging @hollyand-writes @barbex @natsora @sulevinblade and anyone else who wants to do the thing!
1. First ship you ever wrote fic for: Sulahn/Blackwall (If we’re going farther back, Sherlock/John)
2. Ship you write the most now: Padi Hawke/Sebastian, with Bellial/Blackwall being a close second.
3. Ship you read the most now: Carver/Merrill, technically, because I’m currently reading 2 longfics where they’re together or going to get there, and then also Cullen/Sebastian for the same reason.
4. Newest ship: Cassandra/Carver is a thing that I am looking at and wondering about and considering how it would work, and it’s all @barbex‘s fault for writing their banter so well even if they aren’t together in the fic. They could be though, if he’s a Templar and he follows Cullen from Kirkwall to Haven. It could happen.
5. Rare ship you wanna read more of: Bethany/Alistair is the first that comes to mind, but really I’d like to read more rarepairs just as it is, I don’t read enough, I don’t think. Also anything with Krem, I love that man.
6. Your taboo ship: I have read and enjoyed a G-rated, no-one-takes-clothes-off Warden/Architect fic, and I liked it. I am a sucker for kind monsters that look like they’re seeking redemption and/or want to help the heroes.
7. They never met in canon ship: Bethany/Alistair. I mean depending on your world state they might for a minute in DA2, but I dunno that that’s the same thing. I like the idea of Warden!Bethany and Alistair.
8. Your unexpected ship: Cullen/Sebastian. I have to admit I wasn’t at all sure what I thought of it at first, but I have been converted by how @cullenlovesmen writes them together.
9. The ship you always forget to give love to: Eorryn Cousland/Alistair Theirin. They’re just happily following their canon timeline, separated but destined to get back together and cure the Blight and live to a ripe old age, and you can’t convince me otherwise. Second runner up here is Padi/Anders, because they really were happy for a while and I want to prove it.
10. Ship your OC with a canon character (if applicable): That’s what I do. c:
11. Ship you’re embarrassed to ship: None, really. Architect/Warden is probably the closest I get, if only because it is so predictable that I would look at the kind(ish) monster who seems to want to help and be like: That One Is The One I Want
12. Your most romantic ship: Bellial/Blackwall. Kelly/Josephine is gonna be right up there once I get to them, too.
13. Your sexiest ship: Bellial/Blackwall. They have... so much sex, and she is so unapologetic in her sensuality that her just existing within 3 feet of him is a turn-on, and she knows it, and it’s wicked but they both like it.
14. Your most tragic ship: Padi/Anders. My playlist for them is just called The Bad End.
15. A ship you want more content for: Ghilanel Lavellan/Happiness @sulevinblade

Thranduilsperkybutt 8000 follower prompt-a-thon @thranduilsperkybutt
Prompt: 26

Fandom: John Wick
Pairing: Aurelio/reader
Warnings: language

You were in trouble. BIG trouble. And the longer you stalled trying to figure out how you were going to break the news to him, the more pissed off he was going to be.
Fuck.
Best to just bite the bullet and take the car to him. It still ran, you could drive it there. Not having to call Aurelio to pick you and the car up with the flatbed would be the best idea right now.
Sighing you climbed into the driver's seat and turned the key. Once, twice, third times the charm, you hear the engine roar to life. Ok, not roar, more like sputter softly. But it's running, and you just need to get it to Aurelio.
Putting the '63 Stingray in gear you slowly make your way to his shop. He's really going to have your head for this.
Work in the shop ceased as you pulled in, all eyes turning towards you. With a grimace you try to hide lower in the seat. At this rate, someone would blab to Aurelio before you had a chance to even get out of the car. You meant to prepare him, not blindside him.
Finding the spot where it went, you quickly put it in park and cut the engine. Jumping out you ran towards his office, only to be met by him and one of his guys half way there.
"What did you do?" He asks, voice tight but not angry. Yet.
"uhhm, it's probably best if you just come and look at it," you sigh, biting your lip.
Closing his eyes, as if to calm himself, he nods and waves his guy off before walking towards the car.
Following behind him, you wish you were able to hide, as if you could. Your breath catches as you realize the exact second he sees it. He doesn’t stop walking, but you can see his shoulders tense up, and he turns his head slightly to the left, looking for you. You can almost visually see the daggers coming from his eyes.
Stopping at the front bumper he takes in his car. His baby. His pride and fucking joy. You were dead. Or at the very least, had months and months of making up to do.
The front bumper had hit a tree, after you swerved to avoid hitting a couple that had bolted out between two parked cars. You hadn't hit it that hard, but hard enough to dent it, those bumpers were not plastic like the ones on your car. The spider web crack starting on the left side of the windshield was from the woman's purse that she had let go of as her partner pulled her back, safely away from your car.
He rubbed his temple with a sigh and started to walk around to see what other damage you had wrecked on his baby. Scratches down the driver's side rear fender, though to be honest, you're not sure if you remember exactly HOW those had happened.
He stopped dead in his tracks when he reached the back end of the car.
"Y/N, where's the muffler?" He asks, voice weary in anticipation of what your answer would be.
Biting your lip, you walk over to the passenger side and open the door. Pointing inside you step back as he approaches and looks down into the seat. Sitting on your favourite cashmere sweater was the muffler.
"Y/n, why is the muffler sitting on your sweater in the front seat with the seatbelt wrapped around it?" He asks, a new edge to his voice that you couldn't quite name. Horror? Amusement?
Swallowing the tears that are threatening, you will not let the other mechanics working see you cry, you take a quick look at him before looking down.
"With everything that had happened to the outside of the car, I didn't want the muffler to ruin the leather seats," you explain, voice barely above a whisper.
Silence meets your answer, and it goes on so long that you chance a peak up at him. As you do he lets out a bark of laughter, causing the tears in your eyes to fall.
Rubbing his temple, he laughs until he realizes you're crying.
"Hey, Y/n, what's wrong?" He asks turning towards you, taking your hand in his.
"That was not the reaction I was expecting," you answer honestly, your free hand wiping away the tears.
He pulls you in close to him, his hand reaching up to cup your face, and his thumb catches the last stray tears.
"Y/N, are you hurt?" He asks softly.
You shake your head and he pulls you in close for a hug.
"Then that's all that matters here. It's just a car, I can fix it," he explains rubbing your back.
Pulling away slightly he tilts your chin up so you can see his eyes.
"You, I can't fix. As long as you're ok, nothing else matters."
You smile at him, eyes still watery, as he leans down to press his lips to yours in a soft kiss. Pulling you tight against him, you rest your head on his chest, his comfort releasing the weight that was on your chest.
Pulling away he turns and closes the passenger side door and holds out his hands for the keys. Digging into your pocket you hand them over, very relieved to have given them back. Aurelio walks over to the driver's side, opens the door and puts the keys under the visor before closing it. Turning towards you he motions for you to come with him.
"Are you seriously not pissed?" You venture to ask as you walk with him towards his office.
"Pissed? No, like I said, it can be fixed. It's what I do. And I know you'll make it up to me," he says, voice full of suggestion.
"Besides if there’s one thing I learned from tonight, it’s to never trust you with the keys to my car again," he finishes with a grin.

Celestial Bodies and Ours (Alexander Hamilton x John Laurens)
Summary: AU where John and Alex are two star-crossed lovers (not really but I couldn’t pass up on the space pun) who are chosen to be the first people to visit Trappist-1e. For the @hamwriters write-a-thon, although I’m not sure if that’s supposed to be only imagines.
Genre: uh, fluff, I guess? Some angst?
Warnings: some mentions of bullying
Word count: 437
Notes: My first Lams fic (I think)! The way I write here is more like my free-writing style and not so much fanfic-ish, but it is what it is. I can’t believe I saw Hamilton AU and the first thing I thought of was “Let’s send them to that new solar system NASA found!” Anyway, lots of space references. Bonus points to anyone who can spot my super-subtle reference to Wicked and paraphrased Daveed Diggs quote and my Florence + the Machine quote. Wow. Considering how short this was, I put in quite a few references.
The Sun.
Every kid wanted, at some point, to be an astronaut. It’s why we draw ourselves in rocket ships in kindergarten; why we all make solar systems out of foam balls and marker ink when we’re nine. Eventually we grow up and discard our fantastical dreams in favour of something more manageable, like a nice, steady job at the bank that’ll keep the kids fed and the missus happy.
But the lucky few of us who aren’t tethered continue dreaming. We float, our heads in the clouds, sunlight in our eyes, hoping in vain to meet someone up there.
This was Alex.
The Earth.
We all like to consider ourselves different. Everyone will do anything to seem less like everyone else. It’s only when things get rough, and we realise that being different is not all it’s cracked up to be, that we revert back to the mainstream like we always do.
But it’s painful when you’re different by nature, not by choice. There’s nothing to do when they call you names. There’s no way to avoid the days they push you onto the ground so hard you taste earth in your mouth. There’s no escape route.
This was John.
The moon and stars.
It was only years later, in university, that the two passing comets were knocked out of orbit by the same sun–the pull of their mutual dream, to be an astronaut. In space it was calm. You were free to think and free to exist. There was no gravitational pull keeping you down; it was just you.
Glances in the halls evolved into long nights studying together, every meeting adding another layer of meaning onto their relationship. All those nights of coffee and the gentle glow of computer screens til six a.m. finally paid off, as the Caribbean immigrant and South Carolina native graduated top of their class in Engineering and Biology, respectively. It was the night after graduation that the two of them kissed for the first time, under a bath of silver moonlight and twinkling stars.
This was Alex and John.
Trappist-1e.
Three. John struggled to keep his breathing regular.
Two. Above a background of rumbles, Alex slowly reached across the console and held John’s gloved hand.
One. Together into the unknown, prepared for a world of variables and adventure. Two dreamers, free from judgement, free from tethers.
Lift off. They broke through the atmosphere, both of them looking out the window to see how big, how blue, and how beautiful the world beneath them was. Somewhere, there were two little boys, still wandering, still searching. For planets. For ideas. For hope, life, love. For each other.

You have seen and laughed your way through Chotisi Baat, Chasme Buddoor, Golmaal, Hera Pheri and Judwaa. But the directors of all 5 made other if not betters though less successful comedies during their ‘laugh’ time. Here is my list of less well-known comedies by the five mirth masters that can’t be missed.
1. Katha (1983): Sai Paranjpye is rightly celebrated for Chashme Buddoorwhich set a new benchmark for burlesque and banter, and also gave Farouq Sheikh and Deepti Naval an opportunity to display their comic timing. But I feel Sai was far more confident with her laugh lines in Katha, a risible re-telling of the tortoise & hare fable with Farouq and Naseer playing against each other with remarkable ease and fluency. Deepti Naval was the chawl chick with a big flower in her oiled hair whom both actors wanted to win. What a pleasure to see Farouq cast as the wicked wheeler-dealer. Sai named him Basu Bhatt after filmmaker Basu Bhattacharya who didn’t allow one of her best film Sparshto release.
2. Naram Garam (1981): So okay, you love Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Chupke Chupke and Golmaal. So do I. Both have their quota of cute amusement. And they both have a massive ‘fun’ following. You can go back to these two Ha-ha-thons from Hrishida innumerable times. But when you’ve had your fill, try Naram Garamwhich according to me, is a peppier, perkier, more tightly structured and warmly humorous follow-up to Golmaalwith an outstanding comedy act by Shatrughan Sinha as a goon with a heart of gold that melts when he sees Swaroop Sampat. And by the way a totally neglected music score by R D Burman here including Shatrughan Sinha’s self-sung Ek Baat suni hai.
3. Garam Masala (2005): The super-prolific Priyadarshan’s most well-known comedy is Hera Pheriwhere the chemistry among Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal and Suneil Shetty was a light-hearted highlight. But for me Garam Masala is the more tangy Priyan comedy. Akshay and John Abraham play two photographers who are incorrigible skirt chasers. And Paresh Rawal as their resident man-Friday is a laugh riot. Clearly this film sought its witty chops from Kundan Shah’s classic comedy Jaane Bhi Do Yaaronwhich I find to be grossly overrated. Garam Masala is as garam today as it was 15 years ago when it first came out.
4. Baaton Baaton Mein (1979): Basu Chatterjee may be synonymous with the laughter he created in Chotisi Baat. But that whole concept of Ashok Kumar as Amol Palekar’s love guru strikes me as embarrassingly ill-natured and sexist and not the least amusing. Chatterjee has made far better comedies. Even his lesser-known works like Safed Jhooth, Pasand Apni Apni (the first 30 mins of Aamir Khan’s Ghajiniseemed stolen from Basu’s film), Hamari Bahu Alka, Lakhon Mein Ekand Chameli Ki Shaadi were far funnier than Chotisi Baat. But my pick from Basuda’s dazzling oeuvre of droll fests is Baaton Baaton Mein. Set in the Catholic community of amchi-dumpty Mumbai it has delightful supporting performances by Pearl Padamsee and David. As two star-crossed love birds I’ve never seem a more mismatched pair than the lovely Tina Munim and Amol Palekar. Palekar looked as Catholic as Nasir Hussain (playing the Church priest) in Amar Akbar Anthony. The laughs come not only from the romance , some of which is beautifully shot in the local trains of Mumbai, but also from Chatterjee casting his favourite actor in one of worst cases of miscasting in Indian cinema.
5. Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004): David Dhawan did his most popular comedies with Govinda. But my favourite Dhawan comedy had no Govinda. Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan play hilariously against their public image—Salman is a god-fearing teetotaller, Akshay is the drinking fornicating hoodwinking rogue—to woo Amrish Puri’s daughter Priyanka Chopra. Kader Khan as Salman and Akshay’s blind landlord is uproariously funny. This is David’s most balanced comedy with a script that respects restrain more than anarchy.

This Week in the BUF
It’s my favorite time of year in Buffalo.
The weather is just about perfect: warm, sunny days and gentle breezes off the lake make kayaking and biking the ideal autumn pastimes. The curtain has gone up on a new season of concerts and theatrical performances. The Bills are back at New Era Field (wait till next year!). And the turning leaves make walking Olmsted’s parks and parkways one of Buffalo’s much anticipated pleasures. In fact, there’s so much going on and the weather’s so pleasant, this may be one of the very best times to make a trip to the City of Good Neighbors. So here in no particular order are a few of the things at the top of my “What are you waiting for? Take a trip to Buffalo” list.
1. The Producers at Kavinoky Theater  Mel Brooks’ legendary film-turned-musical-turned-movie is being given new life on stage by one of Buffalo’s most reliably inventive theater companies. I once saw a production of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” here that would have gotten raves in any city in the world. It was flat out brilliant. So, my expectations are high for an evening of great musical theater once again at the Kavinoky. Through Oct. 1. Kavinokytheater.com
2. Celebrating Trane, Burchfield Penney Art Center  The life and music of the late jazz giant John Coltrane will be celebrated at the Burchfield Penney over the course of three days and nights this week. Concerts, lectures and a screening of the “Chasing Trane” documentary will make this a must-see event for jazz lovers. Sept. 21-23. Burchfieldpenney.org
3. Green-and-Wicks-a-thon, Open-Air Autobus Tours Buffalo has been described as a museum of classic American architecture. And with good reason. The masters who built in Buffalo could fill entire chapters of an architecture textbook. Sprinkled among the voluminous list of starchitects who practiced their craft in Buffalo is a pair of homegrown master builders – E.B. Green and William Sydney Wicks. Together, as the firm of Green and Wicks, they designed some of Buffalo’s greatest structures, including the 1905 building of the Albright-Knox. And tour guide Tim Tielman is one of Buffalo’s most authoritative historians and gifted storytellers. Sept. 24. Openairbuffalo.org
4. Kayaking the Buffalo River September may be my favorite time to get out on the water in Buffalo. Buffalo’s towering grain elevators never look better than when they’re bathed in the soft orange light of an autumn afternoon. Buffalo Harbor Kayak, Elevator Alley Kayak, Silo City Paddling and Riverworks are still renting boats and offering tours. Get out there while the getting is good.
5. Electric Circus Tesla Fest Buffalo was the first city to receive a long-distance transmission of Nikola Tesla’s AC power in 1896 so we have a special relationship with the renowned inventor. That relationship and Tesla’s role in harnessing the power of electricity is being celebrated this weekend at the Barrel Factory in the city’s Old First Ward. Sept. 22. Teslafest.org
