every day i see people very adamantly like "the dub RUINED [x yugioh element/scene/whatever]" and, well, im going to be completely real with you chief: i do honestly think one of my biggest and boldest ygo 'hot takes' is "dude, what? the dubs dont Ruin anything, at least not to the scale people act like they do; they just take a different approach to the story/characters, and sometimes that doesn't always work the best or a way you personally would like."

There are PLENTY of issues with the dubs to discuss but acting like they came in and purposefully ruined everything and completely eclipse the original version is just. so bizarre to me. idk. i really dont think that's what the yugioh dubs were setting out to do lol. the sub still exists, untouched, you can go watch it at any time. honestly how is it not an amazing world we get to live in, effectively getting TWO yugiohs telling the story in two different ways, and getting to see and compare the two? even when the dub Does in fact take an arguably shittier direction with a character (chumley did get completely hosed by 4kids like. oh my god.) i do think there's still value in critically analyzing those choices and trying to wrap your head around Why they did that (mid 2000s fatphobia in western media, in this case, is definitely at play on this one. 😐😑) rather than immediately throwing down a scorched earth "they ruined it!"... and then dragging that into the living room of whatever person is having a good faith discussion about the yugioh dubs. 🤷‍♀️

the only genderbending ill really interact with is works with sqx, he xuan*, and hua cheng like since theyre the ones that are shown to or mentioned to change gender in canon. (ling wen too, tho tbh i dont rly care about male!ling wen lmfao, just for the sole reason that, well. i am a lesbian. tho i do have to say the lore behind her male form is actually rather compelling and i think if mxtx were more skilled and open to writing analysis about gender, it could lead to a very thoughtful and nuanced discussion of how ling wen views herself, rather than just if she looks like a cis woman shes a woman if she looks like a cis man shes a man. because iirc she only shapeshifted to get the extra power she had in her male form? that doesnt mean that she is now a man, but in those scenes the book automatically refers to her as such. would love an extra about ling wen's self image and gender. but no, we had to get the statue sex and weird underage amnesia stuff 🙄)

BUT ANYWAY like idk if it really counts as genderbending in tgcf's case? but either way i know mxtx made that ~gods and ghosts can change gender at will~ thing just as a haha comedic relief thing like i think them having the power to do that is totally cool but i do not think it was done respectfully at all, especially with sqx, since mxtx kind of either intentionally or not sends the message (at least to me) that you can only be trans if you pass as cis. ive said it a million times before and ill say it again but the way sqx is never referred to as a woman (by the characters, the narrative, and even THEMSELF) after they lose the ability to LOOK like a cis woman is so so infuriating to me. like theyre not going to just STOP being genderfluid/trans just bc they cant change their appearance. and also not to mention throughout the book they were just kinda treated as being silly and immature for wanting to change their gender in the first place, so, another win for transphobia i guess. though i can appreciate having a canon trans/genderfluid character, they definitely could have been written better in that regard

It’s so weird to see old episodes when the guys said and did a lot of cringey things for seemingly shock value. Like they had a stripper in a cage in one episode. Jay said f*g. Mike saying wild stuff to be shocking or something. Just a lot of early 20teens edgelord family guy behavior and language that ALOT of people thought was being edgy and funny. thinking about the french spoken in all for the game makes me lose my mind sometimes like as far as I remember neil learned/spoke french mostly in quebec (although they might have spent time in france as well?) and kevin learned it from jean who is from MARSEILLE like the accents happening are truly bizarre …. jean moreau speaks french in a singsong lilting accent and neil does too but nasal as hell. they’re all walking around sounding like they’re reciting nursery rhymes. and kevin realistically is an american who learned japanese as his second language and then french for utility (presumably under rikos nose ? again can’t recall canon but if so then not a ton of time to practice/work on fluency) so that’s gotta be the flattest least charming accent in the world. I could think about this forever
