Reposted @raileybaceprints Keeping the unusual style train rolling - here’s the poster for @joerussosalmostdead ‘s shows in Atlanta this weekend, rescheduled from the same days last month, which is why we’ve still got some February action going on! I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and make a little homage to the posters of yesteryear, especially the wonderful rock and soul/r&b posters that lined the halls and walls of Atlanta venues back a few decades back. I’ve always had a huge soft spot for letterpress posters with HUGE type hits, so getting to play with those and still put my spin on a photopolymer plate print breaking the border and reality of the poster was super duper fun. Always thankful to @joeyjoeyrusso for letting me run free with everything I make for this wildly fun bunch. Big thank you to @firecrestpress for crushing the printing on these, he rules. @arghrist is also a very wonderful illustrator for those who don’t know, so you absolutely should check out his work if you haven’t yet!! These are at the shows with the OG dates printed on, in both reg and foil, and I’ll have these/the 10th anniversary prints with me at SXSW, and I’m the new shop after. This 48x48 inch acrylic painting is available through @2gallerypec in beautiful #princeedwardcounty. So I made a huge boo-boo. I ran out of a product that I need so that I can make new paintings. I normally purchase all my art supplies from @deserres but I was desperate to have it NOW so I ordered 4 gallons from Amazon and when they arrived the next day, I realized I ordered the WRONG stuff arrrrrgh. Well I contacted my rep from Deserres and low and behold they just received stock and will be sending it to me in the next two weeks. I have a few canvases here that I can work on but it’s distracting to know I have to wait until it arrives to start new ones. When the Dave team asked me to come back for another print I was stoked, when they asked me to drum something up for the city that I’ve lived in for the last two years? Resounding yes. Funny enough, this is only the second gig I had for Mpls, and the only one that I tried to incorporate local elements in. I wanted to work in the loon and blue heron somehow, and then I had the idea of an 80s/90s adventure novel/movie, and bam - I had a poster in which I had a blast creating every detail of. 'TOVA LOBATZ' Micron 08 Pen on Bristol Paper 19x24in. 2022 It's pretty hard to believe that I've known @tovabatzz for 13 years now. I remember first meeting her as a lively young whippersnapper, wet behind the ears and desperate to sink her teeth into some SF low brow/street art while interning at White Walls Gallery in 2010. I don't even know if she was old enough to get into bars she was frequenting at that time to be honest. Prior to me meeting her, she had already completed an internship in 2009 with Annodominal Gallery in San Jose where she worked with David Choe and Sheperd Fairey. She was awarded this internship due to a paper she wrote while getting her sociology degree at UC Santa Cruz based on the social implications of Graffiti throughout human existence, from the cave-man era to present day. In the year prior to this internship she was studying abroad in Barcelona reading up on art through @juxtapozmag and @fecalface.gallery. This formative time in her life would plant the seeds for many of her future endeavors in the arts. Tova officially moved to SF in July of 2010 after interning at White Walls Gallery while commuting from Santa Cruz. She quickly moved up the ranks to become White Walls' Gallery director in 2011 to 2013. After White Walls, she spent the next two years curating various public art projects before becoming gallery director of @heronarts in 2015. One of these projects is Art City (helloartcity.com) where she co-curated (with Jenny Scharif), project managed and fundraised a city wide project to replace advertisements with art in SF. This was followed by her involvement in the 2013 and 2014 Nashville Walls Project (@nashvillewallsproject) where she curated exhibitions that coincided with murals being painted by local and international artists in Nashville, TN. Tova's joy comes from seeing an artist's vision come into fruition through providing them with the proper tools, money, resource and space to achieve that vision. Public art is what originally drove Tova to pursue the arts because she believe that public art is for everyone.
