The scene of the phone call with Masa-san after the match had ended felt like youth to me. Although Japanese archery is a sport in which peace of mind is important, I think human beings will end up concerned no matter what if something happens to someone precious to them. I wonder if that scene wasn’t precisely the moment when the sense of nervousness from the match dissipated at once and they were back to being just high school students.

The course of events until Minato, who had realized that he was “scared” during the second round, arrives to the answer as to “why he had been chosen as the ochi”, which had until then been obscure to him, is a major turning point in this series, as well as an important foothold for him to get better from his target panic. How to animate that was my number one real thrill as this episode’s director. Additionally, since how deep this scene can go causes the things and feelings directly linked to the depth of the series called “Tsurune” to take off, I was selected for the job of director with a sense of anxiety.

A Scene You Obsessed With

The starting scene where they hear about Masa-san’s accident. Rather than obsessing over it, it was the type of scene to be considerate of, where the facial expressions were hard to control. Their reactions at hearing the unexpected, sudden bad news. Nakazaki-san’s apologetic aspect upon bringing those news. Emotions such as being sad, terrified, worried, uneasy, restless and not knowing what to do. In this scene, you feel that you would be quite pained if you happened to be the one in their shoes.

It was a difficult part to depict through drawings, but I believe that the way the photography was done during the staging and the expressions inserted in the animation were great and integrated skillfully in good spots.
