an old comic for an old au i will never write that i call my Akechi & Sophia Murder Buddies AU. basically, what if akechi infiltrated ichinose’s palace and found sophia inside. sophia is very similar to akechi in a lot of ways, and it got me thinking how her arc would look different if she met someone like akechi instead of the phantom thieves. also, their dynamic would be comedy gold. more details under the cut

bonus:

so, the catalyst for the au is shido learning about ichinose's research into cogpsi in late september (idk if this timeline matches up, it probably doesn't, but let's just say i'm moving what ichinose does up to earlier in the timeline for the sake of the au). he has goro infiltrate her palace to get information on this and determine if she's a threat. goro finds absolutely nothing in her palace, which is a near-empty dollhouse with only lifeless dolls and furniture inside. shadow ichinose herself is nowhere to be found. he's just about to call it a wash when he stumbles upon the cognition of sophia and accidentally awakens her.

sophia insists on being goro's companion, much to his chagrin, and follows him around the palace as he tries to leave. however, on the way out they run into ichinose's cognition of EMMA, which tries to eliminate both of them. sophia "awakens" to her "persona" and saves akechi's life. tired from the fight, akechi bails on ichinose's palace without bothering to find ichinose's shadow. when akechi leaves the palace, he mysteriously still finds sophia on his phone in the real world--and he decides, well if i'm stuck with her, she might as well help me out in the metaverse. (he is Not happy about any of this.)

akechi tells shido ichinose is a nobody. he doesn't know if this is true but neither does he care. akechi and sophia enter a deal--she will help him eliminate evil targets, being his helpful companion, if he helps her find her creator after his plan of revenge is over. akechi has no intentions of keeping his side of the deal (at first).

sophia becomes increasingly heartless and cruel under akechi's influence, to a point where it even starts to shock him. essentially, its the opposite of her arc in strikers--instead of her gaining a heart by making friends and learning what love, kindness, and justice are, she becomes more heartless and robotic without their guidance. meanwhile, akechi starts to actually care about sophia, and feels a deep seeded guilt about what he's done to her--while being very much in denial about all of this. in essence, they have opposite effects on one another.

but things get interesting when goro still ends up joining the phantom thieves, but this time with sophia in tow......

(maybe i'll draw a comic about that someday and share more of the au then hehe)

I don't care much for the persona protag name discourse because it's really just a matter of preference on which you like better but one of the funniest arguments I saw against using the name Akira Kurusu was that there was now a character named Akira Konoe after Strikers released so you shouldn't give the protagonist the name Akira anymore, and like it's so obvious that this person has not played Strikers at all.

I mean first of all, people can share names like have you not met multiple Johns or Marks or whatever the most common name is in your country? Akira is a pretty common name in Japan believe it or not so it's like arguing that you can't name another person Steve because that name's taken.

Second, having Joker share the name with one of the main villains of Strikers is so thematically good like he has to fight a guy who has the ability to change hearts and tries to run around and play hero because he believes that society is corrupt and he could be the only one to save it and they share the same name too???? Like???? The drama???????

Imagine that you're saving people by playing a cocky hero in the collective unconscious and then one of the big bads you've been trying to bring to justice for the entire month also share your name and the moment you step in the jail you hear applause for the hero name Akira, but they're not talking about you, they're talking about that bastard that framed you for murder, kidnap a young girl, and tried to kill your friends, while parading around that he's controlled the entire country.

He's also not doing this as just a personal power trip (although that's part of it quite a bit), but he truly believes that this is the best for society. He believes that to bring about justice, he has to change hearts just like you do, but unlike you, he's choosing to take away people's free will instead of giving them that freedom like you and your friends have been trying to do.

Almost as if he's some darker reflection on what you could've ended up as if you traveled your path to justice alone. Overtaking the free will of society in order to deliver them "justice" just as that false god had tempted you just eight months before all this. All the while you share the same first name to remind you of all this.

You walk through his false manifestation of justice as the crowd screams for "the great hero Akira" while calling for the extermination of your friends. It's almost a mockery.

This all, of course, aligns really well with the theme of Strikers where each monarch representing a somewhat parallel to the thieves and what they could have ended up with if they gave in to despair and isolation.

Konoe is a parallel to Joker. Them sharing their first name actually adds rather than detracts to the narrative. It reminds Joker of what he could become if he lets his ideals surpass his humanity.

Again, I don't really care about the name discourse and I'm not against the name Ren Amamiya (I actually quite like it too at times) but like, Akira Konoe existing is one of the weakest arguments against using Akira Kurusu as Joker's name in my opinion.

I'm still piecing together my own Strikers AU rewrite so here are the notes for Maruki, Sumi, and Akechi's roles:

Maruki

He quietly moved to Okinawa to work with Ubukata but then quit and became a recluse.

This was all due to his research getting found among Shido's stolen shit or something which led to him getting recruited as one of the scientists only to then bail when he saw what it all entailed and seeing it all firsthand. Basically the moment he entered the lab he immediately noped out, especially once he saw an experiment in action along with Ubukata's madness almost reflecting his own. He was also one of the scientists that tried to talk him out of it but was refused or even threatened. He ends up blocking out all memories of that lab due to trauma and hidden guilt for not freeing the desires there himself. Icarus, his new persona, would be calling out his cowardice and continuing the habit of running away from his problems along with his hubris. Also some (attempt at) slow burn HaseMaru. Joins after having a new awakening in the Okinawa Jail as both a fighter and an extra Navi.

Sumi

Sumi is visiting Tokyo for the summer at her Coach's suggestion albeit recovering but still dealing with things.

Still maintains her kind and empathetic attitude despite it and would be the first of the group to actively try to bond with Zenkichi, starting with helping him set up the calling cards in Sendai and then Sapporo. That bond later extends to Akane due to having traumas in common (this can also help her feel more closure for Kasumi's death since it would be a further indication that she's not alone). The initial concept was her struggling with Cendrillon before gaining Odile after a breaking point but I ultimately scrapped it. Potential AkeSumi too.

Akechi

Decided to let the others assume he's dead so that he can go take care of himself but then decides to investigate on his own initially.

I guess the best idea I could come up with regarding Akechi is that he's been slowly investigating the change of heart cases after seeing news reports and articles from rehab/shelter. He sets out after being deemed well enough to explore outside the facility as he tries to check out the locations. Not sure when he'd cross paths with the Thieves tho but I am thinking as early as Sendai or Sapporo. He would first appear watching Alice's calling card with a smirk before leaving, indicating slight nostalgia. He's also familiar with Zenkichi and his past due to previously working with Shido and would butt heads with him for his supposed cowardice ("Didn't think the big bad wolf would be tamed so easily"). I would probably attempt closure with him, Haru, and Futaba but how I'm not sure yet.
