Feeling It...
youtube
This show IMO isn't even like super old or "nostalgic" (it's from 2006) but this ending song FEELS so nostalgic and I have no idea why.

Happy 38th birthday KyoAni!
My favorite anime produced by this company are The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Lucky Star. The title character of the former show and Konata Izumi of the latter show even have the same VAs in both Languages (Aya Hirano and Wendee Lee).
Other shows produced from this company:
K-ON!
Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions
Nichijou
The Key adaptations (Clannad, Kanon and Air)
Free!
Beyond the Boundary
Sound! Euphonium
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid
Violet Evergarden
A Silent Voice

The Enjoyment of Rewatching Haruhi Suzumiya
Tumblr media
There are often debates on social media and internet forums about which version of a series is the best–the anime or the manga? No matter the series, there are those who’ll argue until they’re blue in the face about which version is better. It’s a conversation that is, unfortunately to those who spend an extensive time engaging in, ultimately subjective–unless if you’re talking about trainwrecks such as EX-ARM or Stella Jogakuin Koutou-ka C³-bu, but that’s at the extreme end of the spectrum.
This also applies to light novels. ‘Anime vs. Light Novel’ usually doesn’t get the traction ‘Anime vs. Manga’ does, but it would be silly to imply that the discussion isn’t had. Anime based on light novels typically give off a different vibe than anime based on manga. There are also key details that’ll tell what an anime is based on. An isekai anime is probably going to be based on a light novel. A sports anime is probably going to be based on a manga. Some genres work better in more visual mediums, while others work better in the written word. The point is that fans of a certain genre are going to be attracted to certain mediums.
In the case of the Haruhi Suzumiya series, there are light novels, manga, movies, and even video games to go along with the anime. The Haruhi anime is one of the most iconic anime this millennium. It was the anime for a while, which is really amazing considering it aired in the same year with other hits such as Death Note, Code Geass, and Black Lagoon. It hasn’t had the continued popularity of Death Note or Code Geass, but Haruhi is still a hallmark of a bygone era in anime fandom.
When you think of Haruhi, you probably think of the anime. The thing is that it’s an adaptation–an adaptation of the Haruhi light novel series. While the light novel has sold millions of copies in Japan, I’ve rarely heard any Western anime fan talk about it. The Haruhi manga started being officially localized in English a year before the light novel was, even though it was originally released two years later than the light novel in Japan. I have to chalk that up to light novels not really having a following like manga does here.
Reading The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, the first volume of the eleven-volume series, I couldn’t help to think that I had a better time watching the Haruhi anime. Don’t get me wrong, the novel was good. A fun read. But compared to the anime, it’s just average.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is the chronological beginning of the Haruhi series–when the Haruhi anime was first aired, the order it was aired in was “Kyon order”. I tried looking into why that was, but all I got back was that it was aired that way so the anime would end on a high note (the end of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya arc). “Kyon order” is irrelevant to the plot–the only reason you’d want to watch it in that order is to ‘experience the anime the way it came out’. It’s nothing new, with the Haruhi light novel series also being released in non-sequential order, but it’s not the ideal way to watch Haruhi in my opinion at least.
“Haruhi order”, or the chronological order, is the way you’d watch the anime if you wanted it to make sense to you. Rather than it being spread throughout the season like in “Kyon order”, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is wrapped up by episode six. While I enjoy Kyoto Animation’s willingness to think outside the box when it comes to Haruhi, this watch order is the way it’s meant to be viewed.
Indeed, watching the Haruhi anime, I really had a good time. Airing in 2006, Haruhi was the beginning of KyoAni’s golden era. You only have to watch one episode to see why. The animation quality, while not the main draw to Haruhi, is still superb. Everyone–especially Haruhi, but also everyone, moves with so much life. Thankfully it doesn’t have the same art style as other KyoAni anime from the era such as Air, Kanon, and Clannad. That Key visual novel style is such an eyesore. In addition to excellent animation, there’s also the unforgettable soundtrack. Hits like this and this amplify any scene, and totally match the vibe that Haruhi gives off. The ability to adapt faithfully and not have to abridge it is a huge help as well. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a fairly short novel, even by light novel standards. Six episodes are more than enough to adapt everything from the novel. KyoAni manages to fill that time and not make it feel like they’re stalling. It’s rare that a light novel volume gets six episodes to its name…most are lucky to get three!
Rewatching Haruhi, I have gained a newfound respect for it. Watching it the first time around, I liked the show, but I never got attached to it as so many others did. To be fair, I watched it originally in 2013, years after it was released, and years after it was ‘the big thing’ in the Western anime scene. The only thing different now, other than being ten years older and way more of an ‘anime veteran’ now, is that I have read the first Haruhi light novel. While the anime adapts pretty much everything from the light novel, reading the light novel first made the experience of watching the anime all that much better. It’s rare for me to improve my opinion of an anime by watching it the second time around–as time goes on and I get older (and presumingly more ‘mature’), my criteria for what I want to watch shifts. The dogshit harem anime I watched when I was a teenager and gave a 50/100 to would probably be a 20/100 today if I, for some reason, wanted to rewatch it. In the case of Haruhi, I gave it a 70/100 the first time around, but I can envision myself giving it a higher rating once the time comes.
For all intents and purposes, the anime adaptation of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya might be one of the best light novel adaptations I’ve ever seen. To be frank with you, as of writing this, I’m still only six episodes into my Haruhi rewatch–I’ll continue it after I’m done typing this, but six episodes in, I can already see KyoAni’s brilliance at work. Does that make Haruhi one of the best anime ever? Definitely not. Not yet at least (as I’m still only six episodes into my rewatch!).
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is only an average light novel, not due to any fault of its own. It’s the nature of light novels; the first volume is used to introduce characters and setting. It’s only the first chapter of what theoretically could be an endless saga. In the case of Haruhi, there have been ten volumes written after The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, meaning we’re not even really into the meat and potatoes of it plotwise. The rather short length, even by light novel standards, doesn’t help either. But what The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya lacks in length, it makes up in substance. A reason why the Haruhi anime adaptation is so good is that it had such inspired source material. KyoAni does have a history of making anime that’s better than the source material–the Haruhi anime doesn’t embellish its source material. So far, I’m enjoying my Haruhi rewatch. Hell, maybe this time I’ll watch all of Endless Eight.

CATCHING UP ON ASK GAMES on this fine 1:18 am >:3
2, if you gave an in depth description of your story to someone who was not all the way paying attention, what would their takeaway be?
the takeaway is that i'd stop talking the second it seems sb is not paying attention lmao but i guess the cliffnotes is [standing in front of conspiracy board] hot evil girls (unkillable) also moons something is up with them moons
4, what would you say is the message, if there is one.
alright finally deigning this with a serious answer. there is no big msg no grand takeaway, just the mess of the struggle & trying to make it thru when life is cruel and unjust and sometimes there's light at the end of the tunnel and other times the despair wins. sometimes the despair is chosen and it's a self-righteous thing and at the end of the day it's about knowing what's best for yourself and the life you want to live, despite (all the despites) and sometimes it is about the catharsis of giving up when it's all too much ;-;
6, speaking of tv adaptations, why would yours get cancelled? (other than capitalism)
ive seen the twinks people wanna cast for holland shadesofmagic i am not letting irl casting be done so this never gets made because animation is too expensive (shoutout to hair, my ocs have a lot of it) w otherwise for all the same reasons down in #18
8, what inspired your world building, if anything?
moon emphasis is definitely a sailor moon worm + a lot of contamination from waverunners [german pirate series] eldritch ocean mare tenebrosum merged with some old recurring fever dream imagery for the invisible moon. also EXTREMELY early kyoani/key shows (air+kanon) for sponsoring how my visual imagination works & the tragedy/wings/dream thematics <3
10, if your story is titled, why did you choose that title?
ok fun anecdote time again in lieu of going thru all 2389 stories individually so. shadow revenge is the book i started out with and always had that title, and when conceptualizing the other two books for the trilogy i wanted to keep a similar naming scheme (starting with s + double noun) so originally they were
schattenrache (shadow revenge)
seelentraum (soul delusion, to grade 8 me, but lit. 'soul dream')
sanduhrmelodie (sandglass melody)
the last one is esp fun bc i was just groping in the dark for a title to fit the scheme & only from there worked out it was abt linn's melody nd all that biz lmao but u can see the influence that later made soul plot big before i switched to 'dream game' for the middle one bc i always LOATHED 'soul delusion' as a title f. (the german one fucks quite well tbh) so much of my finickiness is needing to make things work in 2 languages OTL
12, okay be honest. pick a favorite oc from this ocverse.
there is no competition like, at all. 🐇
14, whats your favorite part of this story/project?
interconnected story hell !!!!!!! i don't think i'll ever write anything else i'll never have a story that does not plug into the larger verse somehow (valiant attempts by my short story profs but vertebrae inventory / touching fire / let sleeping gods die all got folded back into side content ww) nothing gets my brain going like the layers upon layers of history and thrulines and transposing it into different settings or formats. i will never get tired of it. i was put on this earth to do exactly this and i hope i will get to do it for a long time still <(/)3
16, imagine the entire story takes place but in the meantime the characters all also have tumblr. what kind of (terrible) tumblr posts would happen?
answered! but as a bonus i am entirely sure that eliada would get the most mileage out of that setup until he gets doxxed by alissa. send tweet
18, what aspect of the story would get you #canceled on twitter?
glorifying self harm and suicide, teenagers fucking raw onscreen, every #linneacore moment. also cancelling myself over the existence of amasa i deserve it what the fuck
20, your ocverse just got a movie trilogy a la hunger games style. how have they horribly mangled your message/theme so that the movies are now a showcase of what the original was condemning?
OH FOR SURE none of the ugly parts or disk horse worthy content (see above) stay intact, sj is a romance now, gr*y actually dies and probably feels a little bad about what he has done, every suicide gets some noble circumstances attached to it esp faye who gets shafted into the typical time traveling savior role instead of coldhearted pragmatism for her own end. i am mad just thinking abt it thanks <3
22, you have been given unlimited funds to make two adaptations of some sort, however you cannot make any other adaptations of any other sort. which two formats do you choose?
(i am not handing any point of production over to anyone else but i am using the unlimited funds to devote myself to realizing these full-time) comics and animation! i am not interested in anything else
24, best scene you've written?
my writing is no doubt at its best when i'm writing soulless torture / rabbit hell but that is. premium tier locked patreon content; as far as fav scenes go my top three are probably
qs life pledges [THEY WIN !]
the original black swan masked ball piece. changed the course of history & my entire writing career
jumie/sky conversation after [redacted]s death. we cannot elaborate it's too much for my heart, agh!
[lies down both metaphorically and irl] goodnight thanks for playing!!

Kyoto Animation’s Two-Year Memorial Service
Tumblr media
As promised, here’s a translation of the video that KyoAni uploaded to its official YouTube channel – a memorial service two years after the arson attack at the first studio. The original video was only streamed on the day of the attack and then marked as private, hence why I made a text post instead of just subbing the video itself.
The video starts with a screen announcing that the service would commence at 10:34 AM. The background music is a sad piano tune. After 1:30 minutes pass, the service begins.
Tumblr media
Two years have passed since the incident that occurred on July 18, 2019.
We had been preparing a place for everyone to gather and share their feelings, but taking the whole situation with the new type of infectious disease into consideration, we ask you all to please use this video as the place for this memorial instead.
Tumblr media
Starting from now, we would like to ask for a minute of silence.
Tumblr media
Silence.
Tumblr media
Please do heal.
Thank you very much.
Tumblr media
Two years ago on this day, our friends who had been creating animations together with us lost their lives much too abruptly.
This sadness never diminishing, we feel that our friends’ presence was extremely significant to us as the months go by.
We have treaded these two years carrying the precious memory of our friends in our hearts, not forgetting it for a second.
Tumblr media
We would like to respectfully express our deepest condolences.
Tumblr media
Regarding the two-year memorial service, we have been receiving messages from people who have been producing animation together with our company and from the families.
We have also received messages from the staff of our own company.
We shall anonymously display here the words of everyone who sent us messages.
Tumblr media
[From related personnel:]
While doing our daily work, your names automatically come up in our conversations.
We are creating content together with you even now.
We cannot talk to you in person, but we speak to you through our hearts.
What should we do in times like these?
How should we face these kinds of troubles?
We naturally talk about it.
Your feelings are still alive in us.
Your presence. The ambitions you left behind.
Even now, they push us forward.
Please watch over us from now on too.
We shall create content that you can be proud of. We will do our best.
Tumblr media
[From a family member:]
It’s been two years since that day, when the daily life that I believed was going to last forever, your future so full of dreams and everything else was gone.
There hasn’t been a single day where I haven’t thought of you.
When your smile crosses my mind, a feeling of loss wells up.
I’m so sad.
So lonely...
No matter how much time passes, I’m unable to stop my tears.
My affection for you only ever increases.
Since that day, whenever the rain suddenly stops, whenever the light comes out from between the clouds, whenever a refreshing wind blows, I find myself wondering if that isn’t you making a miracle happen.
Even so, I want to see you.
I simply, merely, want to see you.
I want to see you.
Despite knowing that this will not come true, I have been wishing for this all the time since that day.
I am grateful from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has listened to my feelings.
Tumblr media
[From staff 1:]
You guys exist in the yearly seasons, in the street corners and all sorts of places in our lives, encouraging and supporting us.
When we run into difficulties, we look back on you when you were doing your best, which cheers us up; on beautiful sunny days, we feel like you would be happy, which warms our hearts; and whenever we are in memorable places, the days we spent together with you rush forth.
Your feelings will certainly continue to embark on our works and reach many people around the work from now on too.
No matter how much time passes, our bonds with you won’t change, and our feelings will keep connecting and weaving with one another.
Please watch over us.
Tumblr media
[From staff 2:]
Two years have gone by since then.
The loneliness and sadness never heal.
Even now, we are spending our daily lives reminiscing to everyone’s faces and voices from past days.
Days in which we diligently studied in order to improve our skills, in which we discussed about our works.
What’s more painful than anything is that our precious friends, whom we believed that we would keep creating content with in order to deeply move people from all over the world, are no longer here, and that makes me feel as if my chest is bursting open.
Please let me shout out what’s in my heart.
I want to see you all! I wanted to talk to you guys more!
It’s not possible for us to hear your voices in person, but your “feelings” will be with us forever.
While talking to you through our hearts, we’ll continue creating works together with you.
Until now and from now on, please let us stay friends with you forever.
Tumblr media
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who has been supporting us on a regular basis.
We will continue to create works and deliver emotion and hope towards the future to everyone through our titles.
By all means, please continue supporting us from this point on as well.

September Art Book Haul
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, a veritable mountain of art books in this haul. It's part of why it's taken me so long to make a post for it, because where do I really begin? Well, the best that I could come up with was to just sorta dive into a few of the "most interesting" entries specifically, while still detailing just what it is that I've got here. So, I'll try me best to grab the most interesting stuff and explain that with this post.
Well, in image number one we've got some cool stuff, two pairs of key animation books for their respective series. Shockingly, the Haruhi set was cheaper than the Yuru Camp, though the latter was also still sealed/brand new and is marginally thicker than the Haruhi ones. I wouldn't say there's anything really "special" with them so I'll skip towards the next image.
A bit more going on here, as each book is from a different series. The Uchouten Kazoku setting material book is massive, filled to the brim with all sorts of stuff. Definitely makes me want to get the key animation collections and other art books. Also, finally got the first season board/keyframe collection for UBW (and at a good price!). Been searching for a set for absolutely forever, and only in July of this year was a friend of mine able to find the second season one for me for cheap (they were in Japan on vacation). Then there's the little Love Lab board collection, nothing special. I think the most interesting is the Ground Control To Psychoelectric Girl art book. When I first got it I was worried I'd somehow accidentally purchased a Blu-Ray for the series, but it's just the packaging. The disc shaped thing is pretty cool though, it unfolds to show a bunch of different keyframes/Layouts, a nice touch for sure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways, moving on we've got another hodgepodge of stuff. We've got another Love Lab art book, an Umaru art book (a shame they only did one for the second season), a Lycoris Recoil setting material collection (despite my issues with the story, the visual work done is solid), and a Kanon art book. No, it's not for the anime, I couldn't find one, but I did find one for the visual novel. It exists on the rarer side of KyoAni's works that are adapted, and one of the three visual novels that they've adapted (all of which were very early on in KyoAni's life). Anyways, I suppose you could say it's... rather different, which is interesting. I always find it intriguing how visual novel adaptations go, in terms of timelines, choosing routes, removing and adding content, and stripping the mature scenes. For that last reason, I'm not going to show any of the art here.
Onto the next batch! This one is very cool, lots of interesting stuff in here. The Madogatari 40th anniversary exhibition art book might just be my favorite in all of the haul. So much art and content from the history of Shaft that you won't find anywhere else. Finally getting to see production material for And Yet The Town Moves is lovely. Similarly, Kaneko Yuuji's art book is incredibly interesting because it shows their process for some of the super awesome concept art for Godzilla Singular Point. While I don't believe the remaining two to be super important in regards to pictures, they're both still very impressive art books. It's been a while since I last watched Log Horizon, but the environment art displayed in its collection is incredibly beautiful, and I mean Fate/Zero, need I say more?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, even more Fate! I've got a lot of art books for the anime, so when I saw a good deal on the box set for the VN art, I knew I had to grab it. It's a shame the box set was only vols 1-3 (plus the character art book), so vols 4 and 5 are sold separately. An incredible treasure trove of content in regards to the series in all kinds of instances and approaches (and of course a fair share of horny). Alongside it, I'm finally making a dent in my Garden of Sinners keyframe collections again. I've know got 3 out of the 8 or 9 volumes available, so at best I'm only a third of the way there. Such a pain to find, but they're surprisingly reasonable in terms of pricing when you do find them.
And last but not least, Shirobako. Even though I got 4 volumes, and even though it was dirt cheap (something like 35CAD for all of them), it's still a drop in the bucket to the amount remaining out there. Anyways, in the image there's the: setting material collection (bottom right), the two keyframe collections for the first season (top and bottom left), and the second mini fan book (top right). A load of content for sure, and lots of great details and whatnot.
Tumblr media
All in all, it's an art book haul that fills a lot of gaps in my collection, in more than a few ways. Getting sets for series that I'm a fan of, rounding out collections for certain studios or series. It gets a lot done, and without entirely breaking the bank (I chose seamail to save a solid chunk on shipping). In the coming days/weeks I'd really like to take a deeper dive into some of the more interesting art books to show what they're all about (for example, Kaneko Yuuji did environment art for Eve Music Videos!), so I'll try to keep my promise on that and show some more interesting stuff.

I cant even express how upset I am that this happened. KyoAni was the first studio; and part of the reason why I fell in love with anime.
My thoughts are with everyone who has been involved in this tragedy.

Today, the world lost a number of talented people at Kyoto Animation, an anime studio responsible for a number of great and well-known works of Japanese animation, such as Full Metal Panic!, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Clannad, and many, many others. Keep the survivors and the studio in your thoughts and prayers, and also take this time to appreciate the hard work they did for all of their fans, hard work they were in the middle of doing when tragedy struck...because at this point, I don’t know if we’ll see more of it in the foreseeable future.
Tumblr media
This is truly a loss...
EDIT #1: And to think this atrocity happened to THE studio famous for treating its employees right and therefore producing more higher-quality content, an antithesis to the notorious standards of the overall anime industry... I’m not saying any anime studio deserved this, but...why?
EDIT #2: Please don’t believe the headline of the above news article. I’m sorry to say this but that headline’s outdated. The incident is now a whole lot worse than you’d think.

Fandom’s 5 Favorite KyoAni Anime
I wanted to take a moment to talk about my favorite Kyoto Animation titles. From the magnificent artwork to the fantastic stories, this anime studio has been at the forefront of the industry for the last two decades for their amazing quality of work and their treatment of their employees. This studio means a lot to me and many other fans of anime.
I’ll try to keep this one brief because there’s really no words I can say that’d do any sort of justice. Also, every single one of these titles comes highly recommended from me, though I do ask you mind the content warnings, as some of these series deal with incredibly sensitive topics.
And with that, let’s begin.
#1) Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid
Tumblr media
Miss Kobayashi is programmer and office worker . After a drunk night out on the mountain, she’s greeted by a dragon named Tohru, who turns into a human girl in a maid outfit and proclaims she has come to work for her, as the night before Miss Kobayashi had made the offer to let Tohru stay with her on the condition she be her house maid. Tohru’s presence attracts many other dragons and mystic beings, causing mayhem for Kobayashi.
This show was a delight to watch, and despite never expecting it to work, I recommended it to my older brother, who actually found it to be an enjoyable watch despite being nowhere near his taste in anime. The art is cute, the characters are fantastic, and the music is a delight. A definite good one to watch if you’re in the need for something more lighthearted.
#2) Kanon (2006)
Tumblr media
Yuichi Aizawa is a cynical teen who has recently moved in with his aunt and cousin in order to finish high school. After being away from this town for seven years, Yuichi starts interacting with various girls from his past and present, each very unique and with their own problems they’re working through. He tries his best to help them, while also trying to figure out why he can’t remember details of his last time in that small town.
This was my very first KyoAni anime and one of my first Funimation dubs. This show holds a special place in my heart, and I find myself coming back to its beautiful artwork and amazing soundtrack very often. Definitely one of the darker titles on this list, but it ends on an incredibly hopeful and joyful note.
#3) Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions
Tumblr media
Yūta Togashi is a former chunibyo, who transferred to a high school where none of his former school mates attend in order to start over and leave his middle school imaginations behind. However, that becomes increasingly difficult when he meets Rikka Takanashi, a person who has yet to grow out of her chunibyo phase, and somehow knows all about Yūta’s past as “The Dark Flame Master”. She tries to enlist his help to find the Invisible Boundary Lines, along with fellow chunibyo Sanae Dekomori, former chunibyo and resident popular girl Shinka Nibutani, and nap enthusiast upper-classman Kumin Tsuyuri.
When I first started this anime several years back, I had no idea where it was going to go, but I am so glad that I stuck with it to the end. What starts out as a silly shenanigans show evolves into an emotional rollercoaster of growth and understanding.
#4) Violet Evergarden

Auto Memory Dolls are ghost writers, who use their skills to help those who cannot write, those who need help to express their feelings, and to send important messages to others. Violet, a former soldier who lost her hands in the war, becomes employed at the CH Postal Company as an Auto Memory Doll, in order to find her life’s purpose and to understand the meaning of the last words her major, Gilbert, ever said to her; “I love you.”
Nothing I say can express the feelings this anime gave me. I would say that the word “beautiful” is the only way I can describe this anime, but I honestly don’t think even that word has the power to express the masterpiece that is Violet Evergarden. Please check this one out. You’ll cry, but it’ll be so worth it.
#5) A Silent Voice

Shoya Ishida is a boy who, after the bullying of his deaf classmate Shoko Nishimiya goes too far, becomes a social outcast in elementary school. Now in high school and reflecting back on his life, he learns sign language and tries his best to make amends with Shoko and become her friend. Along the way he befriends a fellow outcast, makes new friends, and reunites with some of his former friends from elementary school, for better or worse.
This, by far, is probably my absolute favorite anime film of all time. A prime example of a good redemption and forgiveness story done well, with beautiful artwork and one of the most heartfelt soundtracks I have ever heard in an anime. Probably the heaviest title on this list, but by god does it handle the heavy topics well. My only regret regarding this film was not being able to see it in theaters during its limited run in the US.
And those are my favorite KyoAni titles. I know there’s a few I probably missed, and I’m still working on watching all of them. Let me know what your favorite KyoAni project is. What ones do you recommend?
Thank you for reading and have a wonderful day everyone.
