An iconic fashion celebrity was unexpectedly spotlighted at the crestfallen rustic lifestyle environment in China where the vonality of the red economic runway to overlook the infrastructure development in the rustic region for decades without improvement. The impoverished living conditions should nevertheless be tackled by the economic funding of new monetary system for the premiere issuance of International Dollars amid the revolting monetary summit of the globe against the US Dollars this year. However the dilapidated rustic environment does not palliate the exotic charm of this iconic fashion celebrity in presenting the coat fashion of China which can be recruited by Michael Kors, Armani and Versace for the seasonal fashion runway shows and luxury handbags in 2023. The crucial turning point for this supernova of fashion should also be appointed as the ambassador for luxury timepiece and supercars such as Rolex and Ferrari or Bentley or Pagani in China. This should receive the unprecedented coordination of President Xi to nurture the supernova of fashion for the premiere issuance of International Dollars and the resurrection of the fashion economy in China. President Macron of France is suggested to offer an iconic appointment for this fashion celebrity as another gift of France to boost the trade relations with China. The extreme poor infrastructure development in the rustic region of China was totally embarrassed by the the living conditions in the rustic lifestyle of Russia which should be improved by the slumbering economic runway of red bureaucracy. This chinese version of Laura Bretam is deserved to be recruited by Nike and Adidas ,Yves Saint Laurent as the ambassador for promoting sport shoes and luxury heels. For the monumental task of rebuilding the image of America, the fashion icon of America Taylor Hill and the ambassador for Ferrari and Bentley Teytana Huylo should be appointed as the special envoys for the premiere issuance of International Dollars in 2023.

Historic Ferrari Sharknose
The story of the mid-engined Sharknose Ferraris is one of glory and drama. Outstanding victories, such as winning the Formula 1 Championship in 1961 with American driver Phil Hill, are inextricably linked with profound tragedies - for example, the death of Wolfgang von Trips and fifteen spectators at the 1961 Italian Grand Prix in Monza. Newcomer Giancarlo Baghetti, on the other hand, is immortalised in the record books with three wins in his first three Formula 1 appearances - including the World Championship race in Reims.
The team's sporting decline in 1962, after a glorious season the year before with seven Grand Prix victories, is pure drama. Constant intervention in team operations by Ferrari's wife, Laura, drove away the entire leadership cadre of the Scuderia around Carlo Chiti, leaving to 26-year-old Mauro Forghieri the daunting task of running the team's technical operations. Forghieri rose to the challenge and became one of the towering figures of motor sports.
While the monoposto 156, an icon in the world of Formula 1 and with irresistible styling by Fantuzzi, became a legend, the sports prototypes, also drawn by Fantuzzi, with their low weight and aerodynamically optimized shapes, had an enduring effect on the development of two-seater race cars in the years to follow. They celebrated wins in the Targa Florio, on the Nürburgring, and in the European Hill Climb Championship.

Glen Coco’s Top 10 films of 2019
Tumblr media
2019 was one of the better movie years I’ve experienced. It was no 2007 or 2013--we all know that--but it was pretty damn good. People who say ‘they just make crap nowadays’ probably aren’t really into movies and are definitely out to lunch. Dammit, now I want lunch. Anyway, here are my picks for the ten best films of 2019 which, as always, follow my runners-up and the traditional bonus track...There’s always a bonus track.
Runners-Up
-Bombshell
-Booksmart Full Review: https://thefilmsnob.tumblr.com/post/185427895290/booksmart-out-of-5
-Ford v Ferrari
-The Irishman
-Joker Full Review: https://thefilmsnob.tumblr.com/post/188571262775/joker-out-of-5
-Parasite
-The Peanut Butter Falcon
-The Two Popes
And here are my top 10!
#10b. (Bonus Track) Avengers: Endgame
Director: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, the rest of Hollywood
Tumblr media
Maybe, like some people in the industry, you don’t consider Marvel films to be ‘cinema’. Well, that’s a legitimate and long debate for another time. But, you can’t say that weaving a narrative through 22 related films isn’t an impressive feat. That’s what Marvel Studios did and with the help of the Russo Brothers, and despite the countless moving pieces, they ended this chapter of the franchise almost perfectly with just the right balance of action, human drama, twists, turns and some surprisingly poignant moments. If you didn’t get goosebumps--and maybe even pee your pants a bit--when those portals opened up at the end, bringing to mind Gandolf’s triumphant entrance into the Battle of Helm’s Deep, then maybe movies just aren’t for you, my friend.

#10. Marriage Story
Director: Noah Baumbach
Starring: Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson
Tumblr media
Ironically, Marriage Story is actually about a divorce. But, writer/director Noah Baumbach imbues this civil-turned-nasty separation with all the complexity and aggravation that come with being married with child. He treats the divorce like the grueling process you’d expect it to be, one which involves real, flawed people whose needs and desires don’t align, making the situation increasingly distressing for all parties involved. In turn, Driver and Johansson make this distress increasingly palpable for the audience until it feels like we’re in the room with them during one of their several heated arguments. Both actors give some of the best work of their careers, yet it still may be overshadowed by Laura Dern and Ray Liotta who shine as the two ruthless lawyers representing them. Baumbach has been churning out these gems for years, but his latest, which may be his most accessible, may also be his best so far.
#9. Jojo Rabbit
Director: Taika Waititi
Starring: Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, Scarlett Johansson
Tumblr media
What do you get when you mix Nazi Germany, the ghost of Hitler and a poor Jewish girl trying to survive the second World War? You get one of the funniest and most touching movies of the year, of course. The surging writer/actor/director Taika Waititi, who specializes in quirky films filled with quirkier characters, hasn’t made the typically grim melodrama about Nazi Germany nor is he doing anything close to promoting Nazi culture. Instead, he uses the tale of a young boy who attends a Hitler Youth training camp to highlight the absurdity of this horrible movement while promoting tolerance. He delivers this powerful message by introducing a young Jewish girl who seeks refuge in the home of Jojo and his mother, played by Scarlett Johansson (who clearly had a good year). This leads to Jojo’s crisis of conscience which is complicated by his imaginary friend...who happens to be Adolf Hitler! Yes, the movie is different.
#8. Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie
Tumblr media
It’s no surprise that Quentin Tarantino would make a film about 1960s Hollywood starring one of the most prestigious celebrity trios in the business; the guy’s passion--obsession even--for film is unmatched. Here, he uses the medium to take a horrific moment in history like the murder of Sharon Tate at the hands of the Manson Family and gives it the stereotypical Hollywood happy ending. In doing so, he showcases the wish fulfillment of the movies and their power to comfort us with optimism while simultaneously warning of their ability to shelter us from our cruel reality. DiCaprio and Pitt give brilliant performances as characters who add to the perception-vs-reality theme, DiCaprio playing the huge movie star full of anxiety and doubt in real life who relies heavily on his stunt double, Pitt, who’s the actual confident hero. All this and much more takes place in a meticulously recreated Hollywood of the ‘60s that sweeps you up in nostalgia and immerses you in a world of make-believe.
#7. Knives Out
Director: Rian Johnson
Starring: Ana de Armas, Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer
Tumblr media
Yes, there have been many murder mysteries. No, Knives Out isn’t just like the rest of them. Writer/director Rian Johnson does a masterful job at crafting a labyrinthine story that’s just complex enough without overwhelming and strikes a perfect balance of suspense and comedy. Featuring one of the greatest casts assembled in 2019 playing a dysfunctional family of despicable yet intriguing individuals of means, the story is full of truly surprising twists and turns and, more crucially, some well-integrated and astute social commentary. This isn’t a two-hour lecture, though; the film is undeniably entertaining. The stand-out here is detective Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig with a delightful southern drawl and an attention to detail that rivals Sherlock Holmes. Craig transcends his James Bond persona while the film itself transcends a genre.
#6. 1917
Director: Sam Mendes
Starring: George MacKay, Dean-Charles Chapman
Tumblr media
If this were a few years ago 1917 would be, without question, my #1 pick. However, as the long, uncut tracking shot has become more common over the years, it’s also lost a bit of its luster; 2014′s Birdman, one of the best films of the decade, also had the appearance of a single take. Nonetheless, to make a war film, with all its tricky choreography and pyrotechnics, look like one long take is still a phenomenal achievement and an absolute marvel to behold. And, although it obviously couldn’t be filmed in one shot, Sam Mendes and master cinematographer Roger Deakins still had to shoot long takes and stitch them together digitally while stealthily hiding the seams. It all helps tell the story of two young soldiers tasked with traversing treacherous territory to warn a Battalion of British soldiers about an impending German ambush. We follow the pair in real time amidst a story of remarkable bravery, enhanced by the fact that we’re with them every step of the way, at once experiencing everything they do up close while being reminded of how removed we really are from the danger they face.
#5. Uncut Gems
Director: Benny Safdie, Josh Safdie
Starring: Adam Sandler, Kevin Garnett (hey, why not?), Julia Fox
Tumblr media
There are several talented actors in Hollywood who’ve gained a bad reputation for poor career choices. Ben Affleck and Will Smith come to mind. Perhaps the king of this group is Adam Sandler. He’s excelled sporadically in movies like Punch-Drunk Love and The Meyerowitz Stories, but he gives a truly Oscar-worthy performance in this--ahem--gem. As Howard Ratner, he’s a gambling addict who runs a jewelry store in New York’s Diamond district when he gets his hands on a rare Ethiopian black opal which he hopes will help pay off his many debts. In fact, he owes so much to so many people that he struggles to keep track of it all and we cringe every time he does. The tension builds to an almost unbearable level as a host of dangerous men seek payment. If that’s not enough, he’s on the verge of a divorce as he continues seeing a mistress who’s also his employee while owing $100 000 to his own criminal brother-in-law. If you were stressed just reading that, try watching the movie...or being Howard himself. The Safdie brothers don’t let up either, filming it like a documentary to add to its realism and immediacy...as if it needed that extra boost.
#4. The Lighthouse
Director: Robert Eggers
Starring: Robert Pattinson, Willem Dafoe
Tumblr media
The first thing you notice watching The Lighthouse is that half the screen is missing; Robert Eggers, who also wrote and directed The Witch, shot the film with a 1.19: 1 aspect ratio, making the picture square, like an old-timey photograph. It feels limiting at first until you fully appreciate the feelings of confinement and anxiety it evokes. That’s important in a film about two lighthouse keepers, or wickies, who are forced to live together in insanely grungy and cramped quarters of a lighthouse on a remote island off the coast of New England. Considering the harsh conditions and the fact it’s a horror film, they soon clash and seemingly lose their grip on reality which manifests in macabre images and supernatural occurrences. Or does it? Ha! This is one of the most unique and beautifully filmed movies of the year with the grainy black and white 35mm making it seem like it was made closer to the late 19th century, when the film takes place. Like many recent horror films, this one relies more on mood and imagery than jump scares and is buttressed by only two actors who give award-worthy performances. Alright? So, go to hell; Pattinson can act.
#3. Little Women
Director: Greta Gerwig
Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, Timothee Chalamet, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern
Tumblr media
You might assume that Little Women is a stuffy period piece and even unnecessary considering it’s the seventh adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s iconic 1868 novel, but the prodigious actor-turned-writer-turned-director Greta Gerwig is too adept in her craft to settle for conventional story-telling. She gives this classic story a fresh, modern take with a non-linear approach and a feminist angle that enhances without overwhelming. Like her work on Lady Bird, she keeps scenes brisk and to the point with decisive cuts. She also adds her unique wit and snappy dialogue. Every conversation, no matter how superficial, leaves you enraptured. So, too, do the characters; it’s a pleasure following these complex girls through the ups and downs of their lives as women of little means and even fewer rights. They’re portrayed by a stellar cast, particularly Jo March who’s played by Saoirse Ronan, perhaps our greatest sub-30 actress. This may be a little movie about little women, but the payoffs and sheer enjoyment are truly grand.
Full Review: https://thefilmsnob.tumblr.com/post/190231754125/little-women-12-out-of-5
#2. Us
Director: Jordan Peele
Starring: Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke
Tumblr media
I know it’s blasphemous, but I might be the only person on Earth who not only thought Get Out was a tad overrated, but that Jordan Peele’s second feature, Us, is the superior picture. It’s easy to look at this film as merely a unique take on the slasher genre, but it’s so much more than that. Like any good horror, it’s creepy as hell, but it’s also brimming with foreshadowing, symbolism and metaphor. There are three or four ideas that Peele sets up at the beginning that seem disconnected to the story, yet they each have a specific purpose and when that becomes evident, it’s incredibly satisfying. Even more impressive is how Peele turns a movie about a vacationing family encountering their doppelgangers into a brilliant commentary on the current state of America, specifically in regards to class division and its relation to the Nature vs Nurture debate. And the movie’s neat twist at the end isn’t just added for shock value; it’s actually the final puzzle piece and essential in conveying the film’s message. I struggled with ranking Us at #1 or #2, but its over-reliance on slasher film action around the mid-point (a minor flaw) was the deciding factor. It’s near-perfect, nonetheless.
Full Film Interpretation: https://thefilmsnob.tumblr.com/post/184073868405/interpreting-jordan-peeles-film-us
#1. Midsommar
Director: Ari Aster
Starring: Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, Will Poulter
Tumblr media
If there’s one thing for which the 2010s should be known, it’s great horror films, a refreshing development after decades of mediocrity. But, just like movies in general from the ‘New Hollywood’ ‘70s, horror films are more creative and ambitious than they’ve been in ages thanks to a handful of visionary filmmakers. Three out of the top five entries are horror movies and that’s saying something.
Midsommar is a mesmerizing horror film that hearkens back to the 1970s when the genre relied more heavily on atmosphere and pacing and sheer creepiness than on jump scares and gimmicks. It takes one hell of a talented writer/director to make a movie shot almost entirely in daylight feel so utterly sinister, but Ari Aster, who also made the acclaimed Hereditary, does just that with ease. What’s more, the film contains no monsters, nothing supernatural and an astonishingly minimal amount of violence, yet when we do see bits of blood and gore, it’s a complete shock to the system. What Aster does rely on is his mastery of lighting and framing to produce images that are unexpectedly eerie.
This is a movie that starts with a group of anthropology students looking to take part in a once-in-a-lifetime festival at a commune in the Swedish countryside and ends in an unspeakable nightmare. It’s a long and sometimes grueling experience that steadily snowballs into horror, but that slow burn is crucial for this delightfully nerve-wracking series of events. Oh, and it’s also a breakup story...possibly the scariest breakup story of all time. It’s certainly the best film of 2019.

30 Big (Huge!) Secrets About Pretty Woman Revealed
“She rescues him right back.”
On March 23, 1990, Disney released a little rom-com starring an up-and-coming actress about a businessman and a prostitute who fall in love after he pays her thousands of dollars to spend the week with him. Not the usual stuff fairy tales are made of…but Pretty Woman wasn’t your average romantic comedy.
Directed by Garry Marshall, the legendary director who passed away in 2016, and starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, no one expected Pretty Woman to become a hit, let alone become one of 1990’s most successful films and one of movie history’s most enduring love stories.
Made for just $17 million, the story of Edward Lewis (Gere) and Vivian Ward (Roberts) went on to gross over $460 million worldwide, earn four Golden Globe nominations and made Roberts one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
But did you know Roberts almost wasn’t cast in the iconic roles and several other A-list actresses almost stepped into Vivian’s thigh-high boots? How about that the original script was much darker and would’ve made Walt Disney blush?
Check out 30 fun facts you might not know about Pretty Woman, including the scene that made a then 23-year-old Roberts break out in hives and the unusual pact the director and stars made after production wrapped…
Moviestore Collection/Shutterstock
1. The original script by J.F. Lawton was called $3,000, a reference to the amount Edward pays Vivian.
2. Initially much grittier and less of a fairy tale story, Edward and Vivian do not end up together in the original script. Per Vanity Fair, the original ending was a drug-addicted Vivian and Kit (Laura San Giacomo) on a bus to Disneyland, a trip financed by her week spent with Edward (after he kicks her out of his car), as Vivian “stares out emptily ahead.”
3. Other actors who were initially considered for the role of Edward before Gere signed on were reportedly John Travolta, Christopher Reeve, Kevin Kline, Denzel Washington and Sylvester Stallone.

Buena Vista Pictures
4. “Every actress in town” wanted the role of Vivian, according to Diane Lane, who revealed she had to pass on the role due to “conflicting schedules” during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live.
5. Actresses that read for the role included Daryl Hannah, Winona Ryder, Jennifer Connelly, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mary Steenburgen and Meg Ryan, with Ryan being the studio and Marshall’s early top pick.
6. Per Lane, the script was initially much grittier, but “got Disney-fied and it turned out to be a feel good movie. Originally, this crazy [woman] was kicked out of a rolling limo in the end because she was delusional that she thought this guy was in love with her. She was only hired for the weekend. And we had such compassion for her.”

7. Marshall initially pictured Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer in the lead roles, but told Vanity Fair his vision for the film completely changed once he cast Gere and Roberts. (Pacino did read opposite Roberts before turning down the role.)
“It would definitely have been a different movie if had it been Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer. It might have been closer to the original script and maybe not have had a happy ending,” he explained. “But the chemistry between Julia and Richard, it is palpable on the screen, it was palpable in auditions. You can’t really see how it could end any other way, because they just light up with each other.”
8. The opera Vivian and Edward attend together is La Traviata, which is about a man falling in love with a prostitute. Subtle!

9. Roberts had to audition twice. After first landing the role when it was still $3,000, the mostly unknown 21-year-old (at the time of auditions) had to read again when Disney took over the project.
10. After turning down the role of Edward several times, Roberts was the one to convince Gere to do the movie, per their 2015 appearance on Today. When Roberts was flown to New York to try and persuade him, Marshall called Gere to check in. While he was on the phone, Roberts wrote “Please say yes” on a Post-it note. Gere then told Marshall over the phone, “I just said yes.”
11. That iconic movie poster? It’s not actually Roberts’ body! Her head was super-imposed onto body double Shelley Michelle.
Tumblr media
12. While it became one of the most iconic scenes in the movie, the bubble batch scene wreaked havoc for Roberts’ hair as spending so much time in the water ended up stripping all of the red dye out of her hair.
“By the end of the day, the detergent had taken off all of my hair color,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “We had emergency hair color at 10 o’clock at night because of the bathtub.”
13. When Roberts was having difficulty laughing in the scene where Vivian is watching re-runs of I Love Lucy, Marshall ended up off-camera tickling her feet to get a genuine laugh from his star.
14. In the piano scene, Gere is actually playing the instrument. And the piece he is playing was an original composition that ended up on the film’s soundtrack.

15. Ferrari and Porsche both declined requests for their cars to be featured in the film, as they didn’t want their brands associated with soliciting prostitutes. Edward ended up driving a sportscar from Lotus Cars.
16. The homeless man that Edward asks for directions? It’s a quick cameo from Marshall.
17. Roberts, a relative newcomer, was so nervous to film the sex scene that she broke out in hives. “I had never done this kind of stuff before, and I was really nervous,” Roberts told ABC News. “I’d get hives. They’d say, ‘kiss,’ and I’d get a hive.”

18. The person who shouts “What’s your dream? Everybody’s got a dream!” It was the film’s costume designer, Marilyn Vance.
19. Aside from a pair of Chanel heels, Vance and her team created every one of Vivian’s looks in the movie, including the polka dot polo dress and her infamous cut-out dress.
20. All of Edward’s suits were custom-made for Gere, with Vance going all the way to Italy to find the right fabric.
Tumblr media

21. One of the film’s most memorable looks was originally going to be completely different, as the studio wanted Vivian to wear a black gown to the opera, not red, Vance revealed to Elle, going on to say they tested out three looks before she convinced them the gown needed to be red.
22. The ruby and diamond necklace Edward presented to Vivian in the scene cost $250,000 and was so valuable that a security team was on set the entire time.
23. The most famous scene wasn’t actually meant to make it in the movie. Wanting to pull a gag on Roberts, Marshall told Gere to snap the box shut during one take of the necklace scene, which resulted in that genuine reaction from the star. It wasn’t until the final edit that Marshall added it in.

24. Roberts’ reported payday for Pretty Woman was $300,000.
25. Pretty Woman was the second movie that Meg Ryan passed on that would end up landing Roberts an Oscar nomination. Before passing on Pretty Woman, Ryan turned down the role in Steel Magnolias to star in When Harry Met Sally, with Roberts going on to earn a Best Supporting Actress nod for the tearjerker.
26. Despite its surprise success, going on to become one of the top-grossing movies of the year, the director and his stars vowed to never do a sequel.
“We made a pact a long time [ago] —when we did it,” Marshall revealed to Today. “We said, we’re not doing Pretty Woman 2 unless we all do it together.”
Tumblr media

27. The trio did reunite for another rom-com in 1999: Runaway Bride, with Roberts earning $17 million and Gere pocketing $12 million for the highly anticipated reunion, which Gere engineered, according to The Los Angeles Times. While he loved the script, Gere had one condition the studio had to meet before he signed on to play Ike: “If you can get Julia, I’m in.” The stars then convinced Marshall to come on to direct.
28. 30 years later, Pretty Woman remains Disney’s highest-grossing R-rated release.

29. In August 2018, Pretty Woman: The Musical made its debut on Broadway after four years of development. Steve Kazee, Jenna Dewan‘s fiancé, played Edward during the show’s initial run in Chicago before it closed one year later, and Samantha Barks of Les Miserables fame played Vivian.
30. The film’s title comes from Roy Orbison‘s song “Oh, Pretty Woman,” which is featured on the soundtrack.

My 2020 Oscar Predictions
Last year was quite a downer when it comes to the Academy Awards. Controversy surrounding Kevin Hart meant no host (which in some instances worked and in some bombed completely). The overall field of films was very weak, which was clear on the night as mediocre films such as Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book dominated ahead of the few very good films present (e.g. Roma and The Favourite). Personally, it was also disappointing as I only managed to see 35 of the 53 nominated films.
But now, we are back! The final year of the decade gave us some truly brilliant films and I actually will say, that I think 2019 (and thus, the 2020 Oscars) to be the strongest year of the recently finished decade. Personally, it is also much better as I will have reached 49 of 53 nominated films when the show starts in the Dolby Theatre. I am quite satisfied with that count and it truly does make the show a lot more fun to see. There’s still no host, but a stellar list of presenters and performers might end up being enough to secure a great show. We’ll see, but let’s get to it: my predictions for all 24 categories. As always, the films I have seen will be marked with a * - films I will see on Oscar Day are marked with **. Here we go!
Best Picture
Tumblr media
Ford v Ferrari *
The Irishman *
Jojo Rabbit *
Joker *
Little Women **
Marriage Story *
1917 *
Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood *
Parasite *
For the first time in recent years, the best picture race only features brilliant films. And I will say that many of these films, that do not have a chance of winning, could have been clear favourites in more recent years. Ford v Ferrari, Marriage Story and Little Women are the three film I think have the smallest chances of winning. Joker, Jojo Rabbit and The Irishman are long shots, but they could all cause an upset, but their divisive nature makes it difficult considering the Academy’s preferential voting system in this category. I think this will kick out Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood, too, leaving us with Sam Mendes’ one-shot war drama, 1917, and Bong Joon Ho’s critics and audience darling, Parasite. 1917 have swept the awards season so far, and I think that it will receive the biggest of them all too. However, should Parasite, Hollywood or Joker pick up some pace with writing or technical awards, look out for a late shock of Moonlight proportions!
It’s an incredibly strong line-up, but it truly is a shame that there was not room for bittersweet The Farewell or well-crafted Knives Out.
Who will win: 1917
Potential spoiler: Parasite
Personal Favourite: Parasite
I would have liked to see: The Farewell
Actor in a Leading Role
Tumblr media
Antonio Banderas in Pain and Glory *
Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood *
Adam Driver in Marriage Story *
Joaquin Phoenix in Joker*
Jonathan Pryce in The Two Popes *
Five stunning performances from five brilliant actors and yet there is no question here. I simply cannot see, who can prevent Phoenix from picking up the award and delivering yet another memorable acceptance speech. Driver is heartbreakingly good and DiCaprio is more charming than for a long time; had their performances been delivered almost any other year they would have been clear favourites. But this will be a HUGE upset if Phoenix doesn’t win for his simply astounding turn as Arthur Fleck in Joker, which would have been a completely different film without his nuanced performance.
Christian Bale, Taron Egerton, George MacKay, Adam Sandler and Roman Griffin Davis could easily have made up a second group of nominees for their performances in Ford v Ferrari, Rocketman (way better performance than Rami Malek’s winning turn last year!), 1917, Uncut Gems and Jojo Rabbit.
Who will win: Joaquin Phoenix
Potential spoiler: Adam Driver
Personal Favourite: Joaquin Phoenix
I would have liked to see: Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems
Actress in a Leading Role
Tumblr media
Cynthia Erivo in Harriet *
Scarlett Johansson in Marriage Story *
Saoirse Ronan in Little Women **
Charlize Theron in Bombshell
Renée Zellweger in Judy *
This category that has out beaten its male counterpart in recent years, is perhaps one of the weaker categories of the evening - among other things due to some brilliant performances that have been left out. Zellweger is the huge favourite here, and just as Phoenix she has swept the awards so far this season. She is brilliant in otherwise mediocre Judy, but I have to admit that - to me - Johansson is significantly better in Marriage Story. She might be able to cause a surprise, because people want to give her one of the two awards she’s up for, but there is also a risk that this will split her votes between the two roles/categories paving the way for Zellweger to complete her Hollywood comeback for her portrayal of Hollywood legend, Judy Garland.
But, Academy, where is Awkwafina? Where is Lupita?
Who will win: Renée Zellweger
Potential spoiler: Scarlett Johansson
Personal Favourite: Scarlett Johansson
I would have liked to see: Awkwafina in The Farewell
Actor in a Supporting Role
Tumblr media
Tom Hanks in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood *
Anthony Hopkins in The Two Popes *
Al Pacino in The Irishman *
Joe Pesci in The Irishman *
Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood *
I will say that this (along with Cinematography) might the most safe bet of the evening! Brad Pitt has deservedly won every single award of the season so far for his already iconic performance as Cliff Booth in Tarantino’s love letter to Hollywood. It can be argued that he is a leading role, actually, but if we look at it that way, then it is actually only Hanks and Pesci who are truly supporting roles here. Song Kang Ho, Willem Dafoe and Sam Rockwell could have sneaked in here without anyone noticing for Parasite, The Lighthouse and Jojo Rabbit. To be honest, though, I don’t know who I would take out of the category.
Who will win: Brad Pitt
Potential spoiler: Joe Pesci
Personal Favourite: Brad Pitt
I would have liked to see: Song Kang Ho in Parasite
Actress in a Supporting Role
Tumblr media
Kathy Bates in Richard Jewell
Laura Dern in Marriage Story *
Scarlett Johansson in Jojo Rabbit *
Florence Pugh in Little Women **
Margot Robbie in Bombshell
It’s close to being a disastrous snub that Shao Shuzhen is not here for ‘The Farewell’ and without having seen Hustlers the omission of Jennifer Lopez caused many raised eyebrows on nomination morning. Laura Dern has - just like the three other acting categories - swept awards season and the only thing that might prevent the hugely popular actress from picking up a golden statue on Sunday is if people fell Johansson deserves one of the two awards she’s up for. I don’t see an upset here either and we will end up with the usual suspects of Dern, Pitt, Zellweger and Phoenix come the end of the night.
Who will win: Laura Dern
Potential spoiler: Scarlett Johansson
Personal Favourite: Scarlett Johansson
I would have liked to see: Shao Shuzhen in The Farewell
Animated Feature Film
Tumblr media
How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World *
I Lost My Body *
Klaus *
Missing Link *
Toy Story 4 *
The final chapter of How To Train Your Dragon is the only of the nominees to not really win anything big in the lead in to the Oscars. Missing Link has more or less only won the Golden Globes and I Lost My Body might just be too small for the general audience here… It seems to be a two horse race between Netflix’ first big original animated feature, the charming Santa Claus origin story, Klaus, and the big players from Disney/Pixar with Toy Story 4, which never really managed to show that it was necessary to revive this franchise after one of the most satisfying endings to any trilogy in film history. To leave Frozen II out is quite a choice!
Who will win: Klaus
Potential spoiler: Toy Story 4
Personal Favourite: I Lost My Body
Cinematography
Tumblr media
The Irishman *
Joker *
The Lighthouse *
1917 *
Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood *
Rodrigo Prieto’s classic cinematography in The Irishman, Lawrence Sher’s beautifully gritty take on Joker’s Gotham, Jarin Blaschke’s playful 4:3 black-and-white visuals for The Lighthouse and Robert Richardson’s mix of formats and colour palettes in Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood all have one thing in common. They will lose to Roger Deakins, who’s masterful and intricately planned work on 1917 is the main star of its very succesful one-take-construction. It is as simple as that.
Who will win: 1917
Potential spoiler: Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood
Personal Favourite: 1917
I would have liked to see: Ford v Ferrari
Costume Design
Tumblr media
The Irishman *
Jojo Rabbit *
Joker *
Little Women **
Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood *
It’s rare that all five nominees in this category are also up for Best Picture. This is, however, the case as obvious films such as Rocketman, Downton Abbey and Dolemite Is My Name (Critics Choice winner!) are left out of the race. Jojo Rabbit and Little Women has shared the awards between them so far, and I think that Little Women will win thanks to its more classic and obvious costume work. It is the most classic period piece. What The Irishman is doing here, I simply do not know...
Who will win: Little Women
Potential spoiler: Jojo Rabbit
Personal Favourite: Jojo Rabbit
I would have liked to see: Rocketman
Directing
Tumblr media
Martin Scorsese for The Irishman *
Todd Phillips for Joker *
Sam Mendes for 1917 *
Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood *
Bong Joon Ho for Parasite *
One of the most controversial line ups of the evening as yet again we see NO female director nominated in a year that has featured strong films by female directors (Little Women and The Farewell to name just two that could easily have been featured here). It is not to take anything away from the five nominees (or Taika Waititi and Noah Baumbach, who could also have deserved a nod, for that matter), but it is problematic that such films are not acknowledged more and greater by the Academy. The race seems to be between Sam Mendes and Bong Joon Ho, but apart from their tie at Critics Choice, Mendes has taken all the awards, and he will do it again here. Bong’s chance is that the Academy might want to spread the fortunes as in recent years (La La Land/Moonlight and Roma/Green Book).
Who will win: Sam Mendes
Potential spoiler: Bong Joon Ho
Personal Favourite: Bong Joon Ho
I would have liked to see: Lulu Wang for The Farewell
Documentary (Feature)
Tumblr media
American Factory *
The Cave *
The Edge of Democracy *
For Sama *
Honeyland *
Once again, the Academy refused to nominate the biggest favourite, Apollo 11, leaving us with a category much harder to predict. In Denmark everyone is raving about The Cave, but I don’t think that is anywhere near the same picture outside of Denmark (the film is produced by Danish Documentary). And to be honest, For Sama is arguably a much better documentary compared to the more cinematic (and manipulative) The Cave. However, I think these two similar stories (because here the Academy typically votes story over film) will split too many votes between them for either of them to win. This will leave place for American Factory to swoop in and secure another documentary win for Netflix after Icarus.
Who will win: American Factory
Potential spoiler: For Sama
Personal Favourite: For Sama
Documentary (Short Subject)
Tumblr media
In the Absence *
Learning to Skateboard in a War Zone (If You’re a Girl)
Life Overtakes Me *
St. Louis Superman
Walk Run Cha-Cha *
I haven’t seen what seems to be the two strongest contenders and from I have heard about them, I cannot see any of the three others go near a victory. The one with the biggest chance must be In the Absence that might be able to profit from a general focus on South Korea thanks to Parasite.
Who will win: Learning to Skateboard in a War Zone (If You’re a Girl)
Potential spoiler: St. Louis Superman
Personal Favourite: In the Absence
Film Editing
Tumblr media
Ford v Ferrari *
The Irishman *
Jojo Rabbit *
Joker *
Parasite *
Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood suffered a huge blow to its Best Picture chances on nomination morning when they - surprisingly - missed this typically important nod. It’s a bigger blow for Once than 1917, since the one-shot-construction of the latter made an editing nod hugely unlikely. The five remaining films are very strong and different in their editing feats and it is an interesting category for sure. Ford v Ferrari is the high octane, fast paced film that features the most cuts - something that have secured wins to Whiplash, Hacksaw Ridge and Bohemian Rhapsody in recent years. The Irishman is a completely different achievement; constructing a tight and focused story spanning way past 3 hours run time. Jojo Rabbit is a masterclass in comedic editing and Joker is the result of a huge amount of material thanks to Phoenix’ improvisational style in the main part. Finally, Parasite is the slick and cool option here combing both fast paced comedic, slow/dramatic and nerve-inducing, suspenseful editing.
Who will win: Ford v Ferrari
Potential spoiler: Parasite
Personal Favourite: Parasite
I would have liked to see: Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood.
International Feature Film
Tumblr media
Corpus Christi *
Honeyland *
Les Misérables *
Pain and Glory *
Parasite *
This category is - as always - insanely strong! Corpus Christi and Les Misérables are hard-hitting dramas that deals with redemption, violence, what happens in the shadows of society and they both center on fundamentally human relations. Honeyland is historic by being the first film ever to be nominated for both Best Documentary (Feature) and International Feature Film - quite a feat for the almost meditative story about beekeepers in Marcedonia; a story that has a certain biblical sense to it. Pain and Glory is Pedro Almodovar’s take on a life in film and as such is a both hilarious, touching and overwhelming love letter to his field of work helmed by a brilliant Banderas. Sadly for these great films the fifth film is not only South Korea’s first nomination ever (insane!) but also nothing short of a phenomenon. If Parasite doesn’t win this one, it will be the biggest surprise of the evening. The only chance (risk!) of this happening is voters who want to acknowledge some of the other films considering Parasite already “has won it” with its Best Picture nod. But this will NOT happen.
Who will win: Parasite
Potential spoiler: Pain and Glory
Personal Favourite: Parasite
Makeup and Hairstyling
Tumblr media
Bombshell
Joker *
Judy *
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil *
1917*
Hyper-realistic recreations of real life people, villainous clown makeup, a transformation into a Hollywood legend, fairytale creatures and blood dripping war injuries. The winner will be Bombshell’s seemingly very impressive work with especially Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman and John Lithgow.
Who will win: Bombshell
Potential spoiler: Joker
Personal Favourite: Bombshell
I would have liked to see: Rocketman
Music (Original Score)
Tumblr media
Hildur Guðnadóttir for Joker *
Alexandre Desplat for Little Women **
Randy Newman for Marriage Story *
Thomas Newman for 1917 *
John Williams for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker *
This is between first time nominee (and sole, female composer in the group), Hildur Guðnadóttir, and fifteen time nominee, Thomas Newman. None of them has won before and there is a feeling that it is Newman’s turn. However, Hildur has won everything up until now and I think her haunting score for Joker will secure Iceland an Oscar here. Desplat and Randy Newman have also composed beautiful scores, while I have to admit that the only compositions I remember from Rise of Skywalker are the old ones. But, alas, John Williams apparently has to be nominated if he has made a new score…
Who will win: Hildur Guðnadóttir for Joker
Potential spoiler: Thomas Newman for 1917
Personal Favourite: Hildur Guðnadóttir for Joker
I would have liked to see: Jung Jae II and Choi Woo Shik for Parasite
Music (Original Song)
Tumblr media
“I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” from Toy Story 4 *
“(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman *
“I’m Standing With You” from Breakthrough *
“Into The Unknown” from Frozen II *
“Stand Up” from Harriet *
Classic Oscar bait from Beyonce (Lion King) and Tailor Swift (Cats) were unsuccessful this year. Elton John gave the perfect reason for him and Bernie Taupin to win when they accepted the Golden Globs, which was their first ever (!) award together. Can the Academy resist giving them one more? Or do they want to apologise to Frozen II by giving it an Oscar for what is arguably NOT the strongest of its songs? In the background Cynthia Erivo is lurking with powerful, “Stand Up”.
Who will win: “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman
Potential spoiler: “Into The Unknown” from Frozen II
Personal Favourite: “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman
I would have liked to see: “Show Yourself” from Frozen II
Production Design
Tumblr media
The Irishman *
Jojo Rabbit *
1917 *
Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood *
Parasite *
The Irishman is the odd one out here as its production design is not something that I think stood out in the film - much like its costumes. That leaves us with four great examples of production design that aids its film, though! Jojo Rabbits german town is ironically charming in the shadow of war, 1917’s production design team has created an intricate labyrinth of sets and in Parasite two homes have been built from scratch and, yet, they still feel alive and breathing. However, I doubt that the Academy will not recognise the beautiful, detailed work that has gone into the production design of Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood, which clearly is a work of love emerging from Tarantino’s heartfelt memories.
Who will win: Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood
Potential spoiler: Parasite
Personal Favourite: Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood
I would have liked to see: Joker
Short Film (Animation)
Tumblr media
Dcera (Daughter) *
Hair Love *
Kitbull *
Memorable *
Sister*
Two classic animated shorts and three more artistic takes on the medium. While Memorable and Sister might very well be the two strongest contributions if you look at the complete package, I think that Hair Love’s universal story of family love and the bond between parents and children will grant it a victory. That it has been available for free on YouTube will certainly help its case, too.
Who will win: Hair Love
Potential spoiler: Kitbull
Personal Favourite: Sister
Short Film (Live Action)

Brotherhood **
Nefta Football Club **
The Neighbors’ Window **
Saria **
A Sister **
As per tradition, I will watch all five films on Oscar night, so I have not seen any of them yet. It seems like the winner needs to be found between the first three films, judged from buzz, though.
Sound Editing

Ford v Ferrari *
Joker *
1917 *
Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood *
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker *
This category that is about the creation of the sounds that’s featured in the films, is always quite difficult to predict. Both categories seem like a two horse race, though, between 1917’s explosions and gun shots and Ford v Ferrari’s adrenaline pumping race scenes. I think it might be a split between the two films!
Who will win: 1917
Potential spoiler: Ford v Ferrari
Personal Favourite: Ford v Ferrari
I would have liked to see: The Lighthouse
Sound Mixing
Tumblr media
Ad Astra *
Ford v Ferrari *
Joker *
1917 *
Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood *
When it comes to the sound mixing, we typically see action films, war films or especially musicals. With Rocketman surprisingly left out (for a suprise, yet well-deserved nod for otherwise underwhelming Ad Astra), it seems to be a race between Ford v Ferrari and 1917 here as well. The stressing sound mixing of Uncut Gems might a bit too extreme for the Academy, but it would have been a well-deserved nomination for an important aspect of that film’s language.
Who will win: Ford v Ferrari
Potential spoiler: 1917
Personal Favourite: Ford v Ferrari
I would have liked to see: Uncut Gems / Rocketman
Visual Effects
Tumblr media
Avengers: Endgame *
The Irishman *
The Lion King *
1917 *
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker *
Three films in which the visual effects are huge and central to the film’s story, and two films where they play a more subtle, supporting role. The Academy have been going for the more subtle choices in recent years (think of First Man’s win last year). Thus, I think this will be between Irishman’s de-ageing technology and 1917’s one-take-vision that has only succeeded thanks to brilliant, but subtle visual effects. I might change my mind right up until the show for this one. If one of the three “loud” films were to surprise, I reckon it’d be Endgame.
Who will win: 1917
Potential spoiler: The Irishman
Personal Favourite: 1917
I would have liked to see: Ad Astra
Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
Tumblr media
Steve Zailian for The Irishman *
Taika Waititi for Jojo Rabbit *
Todd Phillips and Scott Silver for Joker *
Greta Gerwig for Little Women **
Anthony McCarten for The Two Popes *
This is yet another two horse race between Jojo Rabbit and Little Women, who have shared the awards between each other so far this season. Jojo seems strongest right now having won both the WGA and Bafta. However, this is the option for the Academy to remedy the omission of Gerwig in the Best Director race. That might give her a slight advantage. It is very difficult to call, but ultimately I think the buzz from WGA/Bafta wins outweighs the other aspects.
Who will win: Taika Waititi for Jojo Rabbit
Potential spoiler: Greta Gerwig for Little Women
Personal Favourite: Taika Waititi for Jojo Rabbit
Writing (Original Screenplay)
Tumblr media
Rian Johnson for Knives Out *
Noah Baumbach for Marriage Story *
Sam Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns for 1917 *
Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood *
Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won for Parasite *
An incredibly strong category in which both Rian Johnson for his greatly constructed homage to Agatha Christie whodunnits and Noah Baumbach for his touching and very real divorce drama could deserve the award. However, it seems to be a two man race here, too, between Tarantino (a previous winner in the category) and Bong Joon Ho. Just as with Jojo Rabbit, Parasite comes with recent wins at the WGA and Baftas, and I think this gives it the necessary edge as well (although Once was ineligible at the WGA’s). 1917 would be a huge upset here as the screenplay might be one of its weaker spots.
Who will win: Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won for Parasite
Potential spoiler: Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time …in Hollywood
Personal Favourite: Noah Baumbach for Marriage Story
I wish everyone the best of Oscar nights! May the best films win!

laura I saw you talk about rolipe and omg you really need to watch their instagram live. you're missing out on a lot because they talked about all the time they worked together (except for the felipe baby radio like wtf guys why would you ignore that), and there's just so much Ferrari Lore™ in it. I also agree with "felipe baby" being THE start of team radio fun, it really carries a legacy and cultural impact only comparable to "fernando is faster than you" (rob why are u so iconic)
omg YES I keep forgetting to actually watch it but 😭 I love them and I love Ferrari lore. They never talk about felipe baby which is like. That’s the moment I have the most questions about you ferrari bastards ok I have to hear the ferrari lore the rolipe + fernando and andrea era of ferrari is my second favourite after michael.
I genuinely can’t believe we haven’t been passing down the sacred rolipe texts to new fans. There has never been an F1 dynamic with their impact. Them both dipping on Ferrari at the same time was unprecedented and iconic. The emphasis everybody places on the driver/engineer bond? That’s bc of them. The team radio fun IS because Rob called Felipe baby live on the radio and everyone went “Well what ELSE are we missing out on?” (and then like you said sgjsdghsd rob cemented the new attention the radio was getting with Fernando Is Faster Than You) Clipped radios before felipe baby are like non-existent. That is THE first ever iconic radio and now we get radio highlights every race you are SO right about its cultural impact. A Defining Moment In Formula 1.
(Also Rob Smedley IS a cultural icon can we plz talk about the canada 2011 radios where he’s making fun of everybody else parking badly on the grid and pointedly says “WE’RE alright”. The pit wall has never been the same he was the funniest race engineer bar none.)
