"The Fortuneteller" is such an interesting episode to me because like? Aunt Wu is never wrong in the end, kinda like how in "Jet" Sokka's instincts are always right as well- the show tries to play it off in the end by saying "sometimes they're right and sometimes they're not", but throughout the whole episode his instincts led him to eventually save an entire town! If they never ran into Jet, he WOULD have destroyed that town, not to mention how Jet does eventually change through his experiences with the Gaang, but! This isn't about Jet rn

Aunt Wu not seeing anything about romance for Aang while she DOES see it for Katara is strange to me if we're to assume he's the man she's ought to marry, because like? Wouldnt their fates be intertwined? Which is why it's a good thing I fully don't believe she WAS talking about Aang, and this episode unintentionally serves the anti-Kataang narrative so well its not even funny (well, okay, it's a little funny, seeing Aang get subtly rejected over and over is very healing). Even if we take out the fact that I believe she was talking about Zuko because, c'mon, he's a fantastic bender who already loves Katara a bunch by the end of the show (platonic? romantic? nevertheless they share an incredible bond)... The Avatar isn't the only "great bender" in the world by a long shot, and I'd argue Aang doesn't even qualify because of his poor work ethic and lack of interest in bettering himself, like- Aang is acknowledged by more ATLA fans than just me to be the weakest bender in the group (until he enters the Avatar state, at which point, he's just the weakest Avatar because he has no control of it) and? Yeah being born with the Avatar Spirit is never gonna be enough to become a great bender by itself, which is something even all the other Avatars aside from Aang seem to recognize, y'know?

I forget who it was, but I saw a post saying that in a better written show, this episode that has such a big focus on unreciprocated feelings would be when Aang recognizes his situation for what it is, recognizes seeing his own lack of interest in Meng when looking at Katara and her lack of interest in him, and have him start to accept that and move on, but... Aang ALWAYS shows himself to either be incapable of understanding or just straight up ignoring Katara's nonverbal cues, not to mention how he goes on to ignore her express vocalization of her discomfort with him, so.

This episode also has Bryke use Sokka as a mouthpiece to give a very incel-y feeling pick up artist lesson and? Yeah, what could I have possibly expected? For Sokka to show some consistency? He fr never takes his own "advice" here, it's so weird! He's always been very forthright about his feelings, so him teach Aang to play coy is so ooc for him unless the point they want to end up making is "love makes fools of us all", which. Doubtful

It's yet another episode with a morality lesson about "Destiny", but fr this one feels so weak when compared to Zuko's whole thing later on about CHOOSING his destiny, where we actually see him do it when he defies and upends his harmful legacy in favor of peace, because here? Here everything plays out as foretold, with a "you control destiny" messaging tacked on at the end- the cloud bending was cool, but I hate the implication that Aang legit goes on to twist and bend Katara to a shape he sees fit, right by his side forevermore, but... Yeah, that's fully what he does, so? Thanks a lot, I guess, Aunt Wu! Look what you did! He was the closest he ever comes to giving up in this episode, some tough love would've done the trick!!! But noooo, god forbid Aang has to face and acknowledge any sort of REAL rejection, Katara simply... Doesn't yet understand that her ultimate role in life is to end up as his trophy wife, that's all! God, fuck comics and LOK Katara!!!

Advice for Writing Fanfic

Assume your readers know what’s up. People read fanfic because they are, well, fans. Write with the assumption that your readers know the basics of the source material.

Don’t rewrite canon scenes unless you’ve significantly changed them. Whether it’s and AU or canon divergence, reading a play-by-play of the exact same scene as in canon (or one nearly identical with few or cosmetic changes) gets really old really fast. If there’s an important minor change, reference it in an original scene. If nothing changed and it’s canon divergence, your readers will assume it’s the same as canon. Want to rewrite an iconic canon scene in some vastly different AU? Change it up. Identify what elements of the scene are the most important and make something new that keeps the essence of those things.

Do not change your tags after the fact. To elaborate: this *specifically* means that you shouldn’t tag your fic with something only to go “ah-ha! It was a red herring!” and delete the tag later. Don’t do that. (A very dramatic example is tagging the fic as Everyone Lives/No One Dies and then deleting that later so you can have a surprise character death). Yeah, you might change your mind. In that case, let your readers know in the Author’s notes. But don’t do this on purpose.

Don’t worry about spoiling your plot. Have the greatest plot ever? Awesome! But people aren’t reading fanfic for new and original ideas (it’s transformative work for a reason). It’s great to write a complex and compelling story, but remember that first and foremost, people read fanfic to have a comfortable and familiar experience. It really really sucks to read 50k of something only to have a new tag/element thrown in as a surprise twist, when you intentionally try to filter that stuff out.

Write your summary to reflect what tropes/ships/setting your fic will have. This is part of not worrying about spoilers. Again, you may have a fantastic idea, but if you’re too afraid of spoiling it you may leave out too many details in the summary and people won’t be interested. Let your readers know what this story is about! Don’t be afraid to spoil some of the plot—I guarantee you it will make some people excited to “get to that point” in the fic. (For example, if character A secretly being a werewolf is an early plot twist, maybe don’t worry so much about revealing that in the summary?)

Don’t say you suck at summaries in the summary. Just trust me on this one. Write a summary like you’re convincing yourself to read the fic. Slap it on and go.

Stop using greenette, [color]-ette etc. That’s not done in published fiction.

Read published fiction. I don’t care what you read but read some of it occasionally. Otherwise you get used to the way that other fanfic writers write and ily all and am blown away by the creativity people put out into the world but many writers are new and learning and you’ll pick up bad habits. I personally recommend reading literary classics because 8 times out of 10 the writing is legit good. Not always, but it’s easier to guarantee good quality then just picking a random book.

Write for yourself. Yeah, whatever, this is lame advice. But it’s also true. Write what you want to read, otherwise you probably won’t have any fun. Eventually you’ll get to a point where you’re confident in your writing and you can go back and read your stuff and go “I am the funniest motherfucker in the room” and you’ll be right. (Replace “funniest” with whatever genre term applies to you. Like “angstiest”. Ignore that that isn’t a word.)

Comment on other people’s fics with questions. So technically this goes with the read published works one but it applies to both. The point is to develop literary analysis skills. When you read anything, think about it. Vague and unhelpful advice? Hell yeah that is. So if you want some concrete starting places: when you’re reading fic, ask yourself if you agree with how the author characterized your fav. Why did they act that way? Would you have written it that way? And engage with the author! This doesn’t mean point-blank saying “well I would’ve written it like this…” but if you notice a character decision you agree/disagree on or is interesting, simply ask “hey [xyz] scene/moment was interesting, why did you decide [blorbo] would do that?” Understand why authors made the choices they did in their writing. Learn. Grow. Flourish. Take over the world.

Occasionally revisit the source material. Reread or watch it or whatever applies. Dump fanon out of your head and think about the source. Please. I love you all, but please. Thank you.

hello! i just love your outfit from the festival i saw earlier! the one with the shawl! do you think it’s possible to live everyday life in historical clothing like that? it’s something that’s been on my mind lately but i’m a bit worried about it not being practical or not good with extreme temps or getting the weird looks from people around me. it definitely looks more comfortable and stylish than jeans do tho! and much easier to wear, too!

Hey! So first of, it would absolutely be possible, and I even have a friend working on doing that right now. It would take a bit of time to collect all the pieces needed, as they are either very expensive to buy, or you’ll need to put time and energy into making them. There’s a vastly different feel to a proper recreation of a historical garment, and a costume piece.

I find historical clothing, especially early medieval stuff like the outfit you refer to, extremely comfortable and practical. Working class clothing has always needed to allow the wearer to do a range of activities, meaning it tends to be well suited to everyday wear. Where medieval clothing gets impractical is the late-period high class clothing that was specifically designed to say “look how much I Don’t Have To Do”.

Historical people experienced extreme temperatures as well! In medieval Europe the main overgarment material was wool, which is fantastic for warmth. Still too cold? Put another wool garment on! Turn yourself into a wool burrito!! (Like legit I’m probably gonna be wearing my wool a lot this winter in preference over my normal clothes). On the other end of the scale, linen was commonly used for undergarments, and in hotter climates (eg in Australia, where I live), reenactors often use it for overgarments as well, as linen is light and breathable.

Out of all of these, weird looks is the hardest to answer. When I first started wearing more unconventional outfits into my normal life, I was convinced that everyone was staring at me and judging me. To my continued experience though, this isn’t true at all - most people don’t actually care, and those that do often complement the clothing. A couple of times people have mistaken me for Amish, which I personally think is hilarious. YMMV on this though, and there are ways you can avoid those impressions (I’ve usually been wearing my 14th century female garb, including full veil. The covered head tends to make people think it’s more a religious thing, whereas when I wear male garb like in that picture, people assume it’s cosplay or LARP). Having no idea where you come from, I cannot give you any more specific advice than this, but hopefully it’s helpful.

Anyway, if dressing in historical clothing will bring you joy, then I wholeheartedly support you in it!! I recommend looking at a few different periods/cultures to see what you like (technically if you’re just doing it for fun, there’s no reason you can’t mix and match even!), and then starting to find resources on how that clothing was constructed. It could also be worth checking out if there are any reenactment groups around you, as they can have good resources and advice for newbies.

WHAT DRUGS WERE THE CAST ON TONIGHT AND WHERE DO I GET SOME?!

I mean, on the one hand, I feel kinda bad for Matt, who designs this absolutely GORGEOUS city (and so help me GODS, Critter fan artists, crank that shit out, I want to see fanart of this place like tomorrow!) with style and flair and beauty (I mean, FFS, Liam was just sitting there entranced listening to Matt describe Yios)... and then his players go on a total bender to be those asshole guests at a casino and are WILDLY irreverent.

On the other hand... I was laughing my ASS off at these beautiful idiots for most of the episode, and FUCK, that Fork of the Storm dice game looked like fun!

(FYI, unlike some, I do actually like Vegas, but it helps that I also know which hotels I like to stay at and how to go without breaking my bank... also side note, I got married in Las Vegas. No, I did not do a drive-thru or Elvis wedding, I had a legit wedding there, and it’s awesome for getting married on a budget - hit me up if you want advice. Also ALSO side note - twentieth wedding anniversary was this past September. Go me.)

Anyway, back to the episode - HOLY CRAP, what is that sword Liam got?! And it is PERFECT for Orym! That little halfling cinnamon roll was already hell on wheels in combat and he just cranked it up to eleven! (And I legit got misty-eyed at what he finally named it. It’s perfect, and I love Liam, even when he insists on breaking my heart repeatedly. The man’s cruelty is as boundless as his talent and good looks.)

Also, FYI, Liam, look at your character sheet again - you have carpentry tools, doofus.

Fearne teaching Laudna to throw fire around was fantastic (anyone else thinking that the purple-black flames are a pretty clear sign that Delilah is still around?), and THEN there was that Ashton moment with Pate! Holy fuck, I knew Taliesin was a great actor, but to turn on a dime from cheerfully confiding drunk to STONE COLD THREATS... gods, he’s so good to watch.

I also am really liking how Taliesin just leaned into that 6 Charisma when sparring with Annaline... and then putting his criminal background to good use with knowing how to spot a grifter at fifty paces.

AND THEN CLOSING OUT THAT EPISODE WITH SHITHEAD’S ARRIVAL! Chef’s kiss, Matt... just chef’s kiss.

secondly, it sounds to me like you've got a good case of imposter syndrome going on here, which is a very common issue. i suggest you look up "how to cope with imposter syndrome" and you'll find a ton of advice.

as for my own advice, i could 100% give you a speech about how no one needs to "earn" good things and suffering is just suffering, it doesn't actually make you a better person, etc etc, but odds are you've heard that before and you KNOW those things, you just can't make yourself FEEL them.

instead, i'm going to give you something that's a lot easier to feel than your own self-worth, and that's rage and spite.

think about all the fucking cunts out there who've never done a damn thing to earn their indescribable opportunities. think about elon musk. donald trump. every other child of a rich parent who bought their way to a fancy degree and failed upwards into the most powerful positions on the planet. think about the unflagging confidence of a mediocre white man and think about all the damage they've done.

now that you're good and angry, don't you think you can do so much fucking better than them?

i think that you can do some good with this opportunity. you can use this opportunity to improve your own life and to help others. maybe not save the world, but you don't have to do that. if you can help just one other person by taking advantage of this opportunity, don't you think you owe it to them, and to yourself, to take it? hell, don't you want to spite all the stupid assholes out there and succeed?

earn this opportunity by doing good with what it gives you. if you use your success to bring even a little bit of goodness into the world, that is all you need to do to justify it.

I wanted to take my time diving into this fic and really digest and understand it as much as I can on my first read because I know it’ll be amazing so I saved it for last.

Love the setting up. The description is fantastic. Ohhhh there’s an older sister huh? I wonder if that relationship will come into play later 👀👀. PSHHHHHHHH THEIR FIRST INTERACTION IS LITERALLY COMPARABLE TO TWO JUDGY BRATS PLS ADJMHGGJNNH. This is amazing I already love where this is going Belle. Oh and they tolerate each other now? Hmmmm very much the potential for ignored feelings. “You can pay me back when you become a football star” oh ho ho making promises for the future already are we now? Loving how y/n is a tsundere but still shows that she cares. It’s really cute and adorable. ASHKKGFKKJHGGGG WHY IS IT ALWAYS 16 💀💀??? I freaking adore how she also wrote her current feelings down as a part of the first letter. And how she just. Didn’t hesitate. And moved on. We’ve got a flight to catch. Oh my God that fic was amazing. Seriously. You outdid yourself. The pacing was fast enough that it didn’t feel dragged out. The characterization was absolutely on point. The oc characters had their own personalities no matter how few lines they had. The dialogue was emotional and to the point. And it was just overall really realistic in the sense of being human, loving, hurting, and moving on. It made me cry so many times. I had to take so many breaks Belle. It was seriously amazing and I loved it so much. I cant wait for the second chapter whenever it comes out!!! - ✨ anon

(i did cry btw. I ate the jar of nutella in such short time for a reason) The sex was such a drag to write honestly 💀 cause i was just not feeling it. Like really not feeling it; and i wanted to get to the conclusion and the angst (cause the potential for dialogue and feelings is high in those areas) but in the end, it ended up being satisfactory when i read it. Apparently I had some musings sitting around my drafts this entire time. I’m unsure what the context I started writing this in was but enjoy I guess?

Probably a lot of us follow various writing blogs or at least have taken writing advice or influence from such blogs or from books we’ve read in an attempt to become better roleplayers. Which is legit, to write better you wanna look at examples of... well, how to write better. But watching a vid on how to write fightscene really drove home to me how different the medium of the novel and the roleplay really is.

One of the main things she warns against in her video is breaking down your fight into every little action and detail happening. It makes for a boring read, and instead you want to focus on using a dynamic language to get across the intensity of the scene.

And she is absolutely correct. For a novel.

However, we here are not writing novels. We are writing roleplays.

In a novel, the relationship is between a writer and their reader. They want to impart what is happening, yes, but equally so would they want to suit their overall narrative, and sometimes that involves hiding information from the reader.

Leaving out descriptions can let you hide secrets for twists, such as in the shortstory Sentry where the lack of physical description allows for the twist ending that the main character was not human: the enemy were. It can also allow you to relate more easily to the protagonist, by allowing you to fill in the blanks in the descriptions to create the visual that you yourself would find appropriate for the characters. Or at least significant parts of it.
