THE STORY OF CAREY'S COWS - CLAN CARRUTHERS CCIS
THE STORY OF CAREY’S COWS   Sir Richard Carey, the Warden of the English West March, after many abortive attempts to subdue the Armstrongs, decided on a determined plan to rid Liddesdale, once and for all, of the reiving activities of this tiresome clan. He entered Liddesdale with a strong force, and, as expected. the reivers withdrew, with their families and belongings into Tarras Moss, a vast,…

On April 17th 1341 William Douglas helped retake Edinburgh Castle from the English.
There are a few different versions of this story, all of them are linked with Sir William Douglas, Lord of Liddesdale, who was a second cousin of The Good Sir James, who the English knew as The Black Douglas.
Posing as a French ship's Captain, William Bullock, one of Douglas' band, gained admittance to the castle and offered the contents of "his ship" for sale to the English garrison. When the English agreed to buy the cargo of food and wine, Bullock arranged for it to be delivered the following morning.
As dawn broke the carts bearing the "cargo" arrived at the castle gate. The portcullis was lifted and the carts began entering the castle. As the first cart passed under the raised portcullis, the cart driver upset it so that the gate could not be lowered. The other cart drivers attacked the gate guards and gave a bugle call which signalled Douglas and his troops.
This was the last time the English held the castle in their own right.
The second pic shows how the city of Edinburgh would have looked about a century after this event.

People, I'd like you all to meet the most insane locomotive family i've ever come up with.
NBR H CLASS Atlantic's
Adam "Aberdonian", NBR 868, LNER 9868, 1906, 1933, Male, He/Him, Cisgender
The best way to describe Aberdonian himself would be the tired oldest sibling who has to deal with everyone else's crap. Has had bags under his eyes since 1909. As family Matriarch, Adam is basically in charge of his 21 siblings……..well, 21 children ranging from 4-18 would be a more accurate description.
To quote Aberdonian: “If sleeping was an Olympic sport, I wouldn't win it. Because my siblings won’t let me f**king sleep.”
Bonnie "Bonnie Dundee", NBR 869, LNER 9869, 1906, 1935, Male, He/Him, Cisgender
Bonnie, for the lack of a better word. Is Adam’s right hand (Buffer?) man, he isn’t the brightest bulb in the shed. But his heart is in the right place. He's also one of only, like, 3? siblings that Adam finds tolerable.
Accrid "Bon Accord", NBR 870, LNER 9870, 1906, 1937, Agender, Xe/Xem/Xyr
Accrid is the silent type. Xe doesn’t say much. But when Xe does, it’s usually short, sweet (Or blunt) & straight to the point. Xyr favourite thing to do is to watch Xyr siblings argue. Or hanging out with the local yard shunters.
Thane "Thane Of Fife", NBR 871, LNER 9871, 1906, 1935, Male, He/Him, Cisgender
Sometimes called “Thane Of Fire” due to his fiery temper. You really don’t wanna make Thane angry. Stories say that he can shoot fire out of his funnel when really annoyed! However he is a relatively chilled guy deep down.
Raymond "Auld Reekie", NBR 872, LNER 9872, 1906, 1935, Male, He/Him, Cisgender
This man, this man here. Raymond can be best described as an abusive & manipulative bully. He controls most of the engines around him (Including some of his siblings) with fear. He despises any engine from the Caledonian Railway or built by the LNER. He fell quickly from grace following the [REDACTED] incident. Has PTSD from the Burntisland Rail Crash of 1914, which has also led to many panic attacks & flashbacks. But he’s still a rude b**tard.
Mungo "St Mungo", NBR 873, LNER 9873, 1906, 1934, Female, She/Her, Cisgender
If Adam is the older brother of the H class. Mungo would be the kind older sister. She keeps most of them in order, self proclaimed guardian of Denny. And Adam “Rant Wall.”
Denny "Dunedin", NBR 874, LNER 9874, 1906, 1933, Agender, Fae/Faer/Faers
What happens when you give an engine too much sugar? You get Denny! Fae was always chatting & happy about something or another! Fae was also one of her class to represent the former NBR when the LNER was choosing loco liveries in 1923.
Sadly, fae was the first member of the class scrapped, in 1933.
Michael "Midlothian", NBR 875, LNER 9875, 1906, [CURRENT WHEREABOUTS UNKNOWN], Male, He/Him, Cisgender
The responsible older sibling, very popular with everyone, but he is very humble. Nicknamed “Pride Of Haymarket”, Michael was a joy to have around. He was scrapped in 1937, then put back together again for preservation in 1938, BUT he was scrapped AGAIN in 1939.
However, he-[THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION HAS BEEN REDACTED AT THE REQUEST OF THE NSW & AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENTS.]
Wendy "Waverley", NBR 876, LNER 9876, 1906, 1937, Female, She/Her, Cisgender
The hippy of the group. Wendy loves peace, calm, and happiness. Some of her siblings think she’s weird, but that doesn’t stop her, for she’s happy the way she is.
Lisa "Liddesdale", NBR 877, LNER 9877, 1906, 1936, Female, She/Her, Cisgender
A storyteller by heart. Lisa will tell anyone who or who doesn’t care to listen stories ranging from legends & ghosts. Original tales, pirates & so much more! Of course, she will embellish them a little bit.
Hazel "Hazeldean", NBR 878, LNER 9878, 1906, 1936, Female, She/Her, Cisgender
One of the “Cool Girls' ' group of Atlantics. Hazel can be described as a “Heather”. She’s unforgiving, demanding & ruthless. But, she does have a heart…….somewhere.
Abbot "Abbotsford", NBR 879, LNER 9879, 1906, 1936, Transmasc, He/Him
Abbotsford is the King of pranks. He’ll prank anyone & everyone no matter how important that person might be!
Tweedie "Tweeddale", NBR 880, LNER 9880, 1906, 1936, Female, She/Her, Cisgender
Second member of the “Cool Girls”. Tweedie isn't rude or unforgiving like Hazel, but she’s not the most kind engine. Give her a whiskey tanker however and she’ll lighten up in half a heartbeat.
Bobbie "Borderer", NBR 881, LNER 9881, 1906, 1936, Female, She/Her, Cisgender
The third & final member of the “Cool Girls”. Bobbie, like Bonnie, isn’t the best in the brain department. Arguably the nicest of the trio. The reason she’s even a part of the group is because Tweedie was her only friend and made her join it.
Sam "St Johnstoun", NBR 901, LNER 9901, 1911, 1929 (Sold), Male. He/Him, Cisgender
NWC Bio (Yeah, this guy has a lot - The Author)
Amy "Highland Chief", NBR 902, LNER 9902, 1911, 1936 (Sold), Female, She/Her, Cisgender
The only “normal” member of the class. Amy is one of the sweetest engines you can meet. Always having a smile on her face. Her favourite sibling is Sam, who was very protective of her back in NB & early LNER days.
Nock "Cock O' The North", NBR 903, LNER 9903, 1911, 1937, Male, He/Him, Cisgender
The most charismatic & charming of his classmates. If Nock was a human, he’d either be a professional con-man. Or a male model. Can use his charm & “Damn good luck” to get out of any situation.
Winner of “Scottish Railway Magazine” hottest express engine contest. 1922, 1923, 1929, 1932.
Holly "Holyrood", NBR 904, LNER 9904, 1911, 1936, Female, She/Her, Cisgender
Holly is the perfect blend of Amy & Denny. She got Amy sweetness & Denny’s Hyper activity.
Not much to say about her really, but she’s here, and she’s actually a decent engine!
Bucc "Buccleuch", NBR 905, LNER 9905, 1911, 1937, Bigender, He/Him/They/Them
Bucc is bland. Like really bland. In every sense of the word. They never had anything interesting going on.
Or does he?
Terri “Teribus", NBR 906, LNER 9906, 1911, 1937, bigender, She/Her/They/Them
Unlike her twin, Terri isn’t as bland. She’s shy, doesn’t like loud noises or crowded places. Everyone agrees that she’s most likely Autistic.
Duke/Ross "Duke Of Rothesay", NBR 509, LNER 9509, 1921, 1937, Male, He/Him, Cisgender
A gentleman & a madman. Ross likes to jump head first into a dangerous situation. Usually dragging his younger sibling Lordy into it! Seriously, tell him to put a stick of dynamite in his firebox. He’ll probably do it.
Lordy "The Lord Provost", NBR 510, LNER 9510, 1921, 1936, Agender, Them/They/It/It’s
Lordy is a sane engine stuck with an insane brother. As much as he loves his twin. They would sometimes just like to have some peace and quiet. Without something going insanely wrong.
9 times outta 10 it’ll lead to them having to go to Cowlairs for repairs!
More posts on these idiots such as Incorrect Quotes coming soon.
*Keep in mind, this is only a basic run throught of all 22 engines. So, more lore to follow.
Any questions please head to "Ask" or the "Author's Mailbox". - The Author

Hermitage Castle
Hermitage Castle has been guarding Liddesdale for centuries.
In October 1566, Mary Queen of Scots embarked on a dramatic ride here from Jedburgh.
On the gruelling journey back to Jedburgh, Mary’s horse stumbled, throwing her into a bog, from which she contracted a fever.
She was confined to bed in Jedburgh for a week, and it was said she was fortunate to recover from her ordeal.

Shellycoat | Scottish Folklore
Tumblr media
I always have a soft-spot for trickster types in mythology and folklore, so it might be of no surprise at all to hear that the Shellycoat is one of my favorite creatures from Scottish mythology. He is described as a huge monster who wears a coat of shells.
“He wore a strange garment covered in shells, the fearsome rattle of which appalled the stoutest heart. It was his custom; when he accomplished any task of difficulty, to doff this coat, and place it under a rock. Without this supernatural garb, he was rendered as helpless as those swan-maidens of ancient Teutonic myth, whose robes of swannsdown were easily filched from them when they were sleeping, and who might not then escape from mortal clutches.” “A Water-Demon from Leith” from the  The Scottish Review by Lewis Spence (1914)
Primarily from the lowlands of Scotland, he is often described as pulling harmless pranks.
"Like the Picktree brag and the HEDLEY row, Shellycoat delights in teasing, tricking and bewildering human beings, without doing them actual harm; and like robin GOODFELLOW, he applauds his success with loud laughter." A Encyclopedia of Fairies by Katharine Briggs (1976)
My favorite story of a Shellycoat involves one who supposedly lived in an old house of Gorinberry, situated on the river Hermitage, in Liddesdale. This Shellycoat pretended to be a drowning person.
"Two men, on a very dark night, approaching the banks of the Ettrick, heard a doleful voice from its waves repeatedly exclaim, “Lost! Lost!” They followed the sound, which seemed to be the voice of a drowning person, and, to their infinite astonishment, they found that it ascended the river. Still they continued, during a long and tempestuous night, to follow the cry of the malicious sprite; and arriving, before morning’s dawn, at the very sources of the river, the voice was now heard descending the opposite side of the mountain in which they arise. The fatigued and deluded travelers now relinquished the pursuit, and had no sooner done so than they heard Shellycoat applauding, in loud bursts of laughter, his successful roguery." “Scottish Fairy and Folk Tales” by Sir Walter Scott (1893)
In Lieth, Edinburgh, there was a notorious Shellycoat that was said to never turn down a challenge, and was playfully bothered by children. According to local legend, he lived in a large rock (The Penny Bap), and children would dare each other to run around it three times while saying:
“Shelly-coat, Shelly-coat gang awa hame, I cry nar yer mercy, I fear na yer name.”
Tumblr media
The rock from that story was destroyed for construction of a dock.
.”..in the new dock operations his half-submerged rock was blown up or otherwise removed.” “Cassell’s Old and new Edinburgh : its history, its people, and its places” by James Grant (1881)
After it’s destruction, the stories of the Shellycoat ended. What remains of it is now outside a sewage treatment plant.

KNOCKING STONE OF DAWSTON - BATTLE OF DEGSASTAN - CLAN CARRUTHERS CCIS
KNOCKING STONE OF DAWSTON – BATTLE OF DEGSASTAN – CLAN CARRUTHERS CCIS
KNOCKING STONE OF DAWSTON Whilst the knocking stone at Annatshiel might have initially been part of the  pasturings and the possession of the Border people, I think it must have eventually become a permanent residence .  The outline of the buildings there, though only now seen as the most meagre of foundations, indicate a sizeable place; a permanent place of residence. How good then to find the…

Tantallon Castle.
Was a perfect day today for taking photos, and doesn't Tantallon look great, it's just a pity that visitors can't get in at the moment until essential maintenance work is carried out.
I like to describe Tantallon as a formidable castle, but prefer the French pronunciation, I think it just sounds better! The importance and the history stretches from the mid 14th century, right through to the mid 20th century!
The castle was built in the mid-14th century by William Douglas, who became 1st Earl of Douglas in 1358 (after murdering his godfather, Sir William Douglas of Liddesdale).
The house of Douglas later split into two branches in the 1380s: the ‘Black’ and the ‘Red’. Tantallon passed to the junior line – the earls of Angus also known as the ‘Red Douglases’, inherited by George Douglas, illegitimate son of the Earl of Douglas. This branch of the family owned the castle for the next 300 years, updating it as warfare developed, and often clashing with the Crown.
Tantallon Castle survived numerous sieges, including by James IV in 1491, James V in 1528 and Oliver Cromwell in 1651, though after Cromwell’s siege the castle was utterly devastated and left in ruins: it was never repaired or inhabited afterwards. The Castle was later sold by the Marquis of Douglas in 1699 to Hew Dalrymple, Lord North Berwick.
In 1944, the Castle played a role in preparations for the Normandy invasion. A few weeks before D-Day, captured German radars (used by the Germans defending the French coast), were moved to the Castle and used in the training of RAF bomber crews (including 617 Squadron, the famous “Dambusters”). These bomber crews were part of a large effort to deceive the Germans about the actual location of the Allied invasion.
Today, the castle is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland. The dramatic cliff-top ruins of Tantallon Castle are quite a sight, particularly its remaining curtain wall – the best example of castle architecture from the 1300s anywhere in Scotland.
Normally visitors can climb up to the castle’s battlements and enjoy views over the North Sea to the Bass Rock and its large seabird colonies, as well as discover more about archaeological digs at the castle and view replica guns used to defend the castle against James IV and James V.
Tantallon Castle is also a popular filming location, and appears in the film Under the Skin, starring Scarlett Johansson.
If visiting try and pick a day like today, the last time I visited you couldn't see very far because of a thick haar surrounding the cliff. If driving it is less than an hour from Edinburgh. By public transport there are regular trains to North Berwick, Eve coaches run the number 120 to the castle, it's about a ten minute walk from there. The buses from Edinburgh to North Berwick are the 124 and X5, then the aforementioned 120.
About a 30 minute walk from the castle is Seacliffe Beach, pics of that to come.

R. Tomlin is the first book in the series about Archibald Douglas, the bastard son of James Douglas, during the reign of King David II in 14th Century Scotland. It is a coming-of-age story about Archibald, orphaned as a nine-year-old boy and exiled to France with the young king. Archibald is placed under the care of Sir William Douglas, with whom he returns to Scotland to take back castles and lands from the English, setting the stage for King David's return. Archibald rises in rank from squire to knight and ultimately fights in the disastrous Battle of Neville's Cross, where the king is wounded and captured. Author Tomlin has created an intriguing tale told from the first-person perspective of Archibald as he matures from an idealistic boy to a battle-hardened young man who becomes disheartened by the political machinations of noblemen pledged to fight for the king. Though conditioned to obey his superiors, Archibald sometimes disregards commands and openly questions Sir Williams' brutal act of capturing and murdering a rival, whom the king had appointed as constable of Roxburgh and Sheriff of Teviotdale. Vibrant descriptions of historical events ring true, such as a tournament hosted by the English during a temporary truce. The final chapters vividly describe the gut-wrenching horror of battle at Neville's Cross. Archibald fiercely fights to protect his king, but he soon recognizes the hopeless situation when disloyal commanders and their men retreat and abandon them. For those unfamiliar with the history of Scotland, it may be difficult to grasp how some of the characters are related to each other. The dialogue uses the Scottish dialect, but a glossary that defines the distinct terms is helpful. Those who enjoy reading medieval Scottish fiction should find The Douglas Bastard an intriguing start to the epic saga of the historical figure known as Archibald the Grim.   Instagram Handle: @thecoffeepotbookclub Read the full article
