Buckle up, kiddos

Ship: Roman x Deceit x Emile x Remus x Thomas x Remy (yeah try and think of a ship name for that)

This chapter specifically is mostly Demile, Roceit, and whatever Emile x Remus’ ship name is, but is Deceit x Emile x Roman x Remus

Characters: The sides, Thomas, Emile, Remy, and Dice.

This chapter specifically has Deceit, Emile, Virgil, Roman, and Remus.

Plot: 6 dads and their 4 kids are cute and get into shenanigans. The 6 of them all meet and get into a poly relationship, and fun 👌 and drama ☕️ insue.

Virge Raspberry stumbled down the stairs of her home, eyes half shut. She wrapped her arms around herself as he reached the cool, wooden floor, following the smell of pancakes in the air.

Her fathers stood in the kitchen. Emile was the one cooking, standing in front of the stove and humming the “Bacon Pancakes” song from Adventure Time. Dee was pouring three mugs of coffee, and was the one to turn his head when Virge entered the room.

Dee leaned against the counter, reaching out and offering Virge her mug. She drifted over, shutting her eyes as she took a slow sip of her bean juice.

“Good morning, my little vampire queen!” Emile grinned, walking over to Virge and kissing her on the head.

Virge looked up at him as he grabbed a few plates from the cupboard, rubbing her eyes. “Hey, my, uh… yeah you’re better at the nicknames than I am.”

Emile laughed, putting everyone’s plates together. “Well, that’s okay, bubblegum.”

Virge smiled, taking her usually seat at the kitchen table. “Lemme guess, you rewatched Adventure Time recently?”

“Dee and I watched a few episodes last night! I have some patients I have to visit at the hospital that I think could really relate to… oh, well, never mind that! Breakfast is ready!” Emile chuckled, setting a plate of pancakes and fruit down in from of Virge.

The three of them sat down at the small wooden table, and all started eating. They both thanked Emile, and he just giggled and waved a hand.

Dee took a slow sip of his drink. “I start rehearsals today, so I probably won’t be home until tonight. You’ll be home before 3, Emile?”

Emile nodded a few times, pancake stuffed in his mouth. He gave a thumbs up.

Dee nodded, adjusting the collar on his button-up. He finished first, setting his dishes in the sink and glancing at the clock. He put his hand on Emile’s shoulders from behind, kissing the top of his head.

“I’ll see you both tonight. I love you.” He moved over to Virge, pecking her on the cheek quickly before heading out of the kitchen. They both called “I love you’s” back to their father/husband, and watched as he left the house.

Emile and Virge finished eating, grabbed their bags, and then headed out to Emile’s car. He glanced over at her as he drove.

“You have your school bag? And your lunch? And your phone?” Emile asked, reaching over and pushing the bangs out of Virge’s eyes.

“Yeah, dad.” She chuckled, looking down at her legs. “I’m good. It’s not like this is my first day.”

“I know that, silly.” Emile slowed down, stopping near the school. “Just making sure. Have a good day, love.”

“You too, dad.” Virgil nodded, getting out of the car.

Emile gave his daughter one last little wave before driving away.

Dee stood in the rather small theatre. He stared at the script in his hands, squinting as he read it over. Emile always told him he should get glasses, but they would just look ridiculous on him.

Dee has gotten one of the leading roles in this show, and he intended to do well. To do amazing, actually. He was a professional, and nothing could possibly distract him from his work.

Except for handsome theatre nerds, apparently.

Roman Mango, who was going to be playing his love interest, was a massive flirt. And he was gorgeous.

Dee hadn’t met him before, but had seen him around quite a bit. He had been to a few shows Roman had been in, even. He was a very good actor. But now, seeing him up close like this… wow.

Roman had approached Dee, a grin on his face. He seemed a bit tired, and his flowing hair was pinned back in a messy bun. Roman introduced himself, made a comment about them both having fruits as surnames, and then took Dee by the arms and lead him away to talk to the other members of the cast together.

The two of them got along fairly well, which was definitely a relief. They would be working together a lot for the next few months.

Dee and Roman stayed together for the day. They still did their jobs, and didn’t cause any trouble, they weren’t children. But the tension between them from the not-so-subtle flirting and touching was a little intense for the other cast members. Dee suggested that Roman should come over sometime soon to practice their lines together.

Emile had two appointments at the hospital; one at 10am, and the other at 12am. In the hour-ish between those two appointments, he decided to take a walk outside. To get some fresh air, and to get away from the icky hospital smell.

Emile hummed “Island Song” to himself, stepping into the grass at the side of the building, away from the parking lot. There wasn’t a lot over here; there was fence blocking him from a steep hill leaning down to the ocean on this side of the hospital, and the other two sides were blocked in by a cliff and the building itself. In this small area, there was grass, a picnic table, and a nice looking doctor sitting and smoking a cigarette.

Emile wasn’t sure that smoking that close to the building was allowed, but he decided that wasn’t a great conversation starter. He approached the man, waving a bit and adjusting his glasses.

The man was cute, in a grungy, tired older guy kinda way. He leaned against the table, looking up at Emile when he approached. He gave a lopsided grin that made Emile’s heart flutter.

Emile was invited to sit down, and started chatting up this doctor. His name was Remus Halva, and he was a neurosurgeon. Remus liked to talk. A lot. He was rambling about… basically nothing, but Emile still listened. He asked if he had any cool surgery stories, and then immediately regretted it a little. Remus seemed pretty spacey, but could apparently remember some really disgusting stories in graphic detail. It didn’t bother Emile; just caught him off guard.

“And that’s why Ms. Moreno quit last month. I offered to help her wash it all out, but..” Remus cackled, shrugging. “Anyways, so… what’s your name?”

Emile grinned, giggling and shaking his head. “Emile Picani.”

Virge headed into the cafeteria, glancing around and heading towards her usual spot. Neither of her friends had shown up yet. She zipped open her bag, digging around for her lunch.

She frowned as she felt a presence over her shoulder, glancing up without moving her head.

“Hey Blake. What do you want?” She asked, pulling out a paper bag.

“Nothing, bro. I skipped Hawkin’s class, did I—”

“I asked you to stop calling me that.” Virge leaned forward, biting her lip. She unwrapped her sandwich, fiddling with the plastic.

Blake blinked. “What?”

“I just… I’m a girl, and I don’t really like it…” she said quietly, staring down at her sandwich.

Blake stepped back slightly. “Uh, okay, whatever you say, dude…” Virgil heard him laugh as he walked away, and felt like flipping him off. This was the fourth time today she had to correct someone on her name or her pronouns— was she really asking for so much?

Virge’s train of thought was interrupted as someone dropped a tray down on the table. Dice Vanilla flipped the seat backwards before sitting down in it, leaning forward.

Neither of them spoke, eating their food in silence. Dice had started hanging out with Virgil’s friend Talyn earlier this year, and they had kind of become friends through them. Though, Dice was kind of a dick. Talyn joined them at the table, sitting next to Dice with their partner Joan.

“You need to redye your hair, girl. It looks like crap.” Dice told her, after almost 15 minutes of silence.

Virge just snorted, tossing one of her baby carrots onto his tray. “Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind.”

He picked it up and took a bite of it, smiling.

Dee didn’t arrive back home until around 6pm. He had been having so much fun at the theatre with Roman, during and after rehearsal, that he hadn’t realized time had passed.

He entered the house with a grin on his face, looking around for his beautiful husband. “Emile?”

Emile looked up from where he was sitting on the couch as Dee flopped down next to him, resting his head in his lap. Emile grinned, taking Dee’s hand and kissing it. “Have a good day, love?”

Dee hummed, shutting his eyes and stretching out. “It was wonderful. I met someone. Emile, you have to meet this beautiful man.” He laughed, turning and snuggling into his husband’s stomach.

“Really? I was gonna say the same thing to you! There’s this doctor at the hospital. He’s so lovely, Dee. You’d adore him.”

Dee grinned, shifting so that he could sit up in Emile’s lap. He kissed him, chuckling and taking out his phone. “I guess we both had a very good day. Here, let me show you him…”

Roman had insisted that Dee and Roman took a picture together for Roman’s Instagram. Dee took a moment to find it, before showing it to Emile.

Emile took the phone, squinting and adjusting his glasses. “This is the guy you met today? That’s so weird, he looks just like that doctor..”

Dee chuckled, looking at the picture of himself and Roman again. “Ah, yeah, that’s weird…”

Emile rolled his eyes, playing with Dee’s hair. “Get your head out of the clouds, Romeo. You’ll see what I mean when you meet him. They could be twins! Except mine has a really cute moustache.”

Dee gasped dramatically, getting up out of his husband’s lap. “Mine’s way cuter! I’m going to invite him over soon. How does Saturday sound?”

“Sure, love. Virge’s gonna be staying at her friend’s house on Friday night. Maybe I can invite Remus over too..”

Frowning, Dee glanced towards the stairs. “How is Virge? Did she tell you about her day at school?”

“She said it was alright, but she seemed pretty tired. I told her to go lie down for a bit…” Emile stood up next to Dee, putting a hand on his back. “We should make pasta, it’s one of her favourites..”

Dee took Emile by the hands, leading him towards the kitchen. He spun him around, planting a kiss on his forehead. “That sounds lovely, gumball.”

Emile flushed and squeaked, resting his hands on Dee’s chest and giggling. “Stop being cute and boil some water, Deedee.”

That Saturday, Dee invited Roman over to “rehearse their lines”. They had seen each other a few more times that week, and Dee was really looking forward to this. Roman had texted Dee several times beforehand how excited he was to come over.

Roman approached the house, checking the address one last time on his phone. He had been lucky enough to get a babysitter for Patton, and didn’t want to ruin this date— he was just calling it a date, he wasn’t sure what it was— by getting himself lost.

He knocked on the door, and was relieved when it was Dee who pulled him inside, wrapping an arm around his waist. Dee shut the front door, grinning and looking down at him. Roman returned the expression, pulling away and taking a quick look around.

“Your house is so lovely, Dee. Do you live here alone..?” He asked, as he was led over to the couch.

Dee paused for a moment, then shook his head. “No, of course not. I told you about my kid, didn’t I? One moment love, I made some tea.” Dee winked, heading over to there kitchen.

Roman nodded at him, sitting down on the couch. “Yes, right! You did.” He spotted a framed photo on the coffee table, reaching over and picking it up. It was of Dee, what he assumed was his daughter, and another man he didn’t recognize. “Is this her? She’s very pretty..” he said softly, setting the photo back down.

Looking around the room, there were a lot of family photos. Dee, Virge, and this other man. Roman stopped to think for a moment. Did Dee wear a wedding ring? Maybe he should leave.

But Dee came back with their tea, sitting down next to Roman as they began chatting. Roman kept getting distracted. Dee was wearing what was certainly a wedding ring, and Roman knew that he should go, but didn’t.

Small talk and sipping tea very quickly turned into heavy making out, with Dee sitting on top of him. Did Roman feel guilty? A little, but he was starting to forget about that. At least, until he heard noises outside.

Roman put his hands on Dee’s chest, breaking their kiss. “Dee, I think someone’s…”

Dee turned to the window, where he could see a car in his driveway. “Oh. That’s just my husband.”

If Roman wasn’t currently pinned to the couch by Dee’s body, he would be scrambling out of the window right now. “Your what?—”

The front door opened, and two men stepped into the house. Roman couldn’t see them well, with Dee blocking most of the door, but the one he could see better was definitely Dee’s husband.

Emile and Remus entered the house after their date, Emile humming to himself and holding his date’s hand. They had gone out to eat and went for a walk together, but it was getting chilly, and Emile’s flirty length skirt was not enough to keep him warm. So, they decided to come back home.

Emile has completely forgotten that Dee and his friend would be here. When he entered the house and saw them, he started giggling, politely glancing away. “Oh, I’m sorry! Am I interrupting, love?

Dee started laughing, turning a bit to face Emile. “Of course not, darling. How was your date?”

“We had a lot of fun!” Emile glanced at Remus, who was staring at Dee and Roman with his eyebrows raised. “You wanna maybe take a break and come say hi? I’d love to meet Roman…” Emile smiled, tilting his head to get a better look at Roman.

Dee smirked at Roman, winking before climbing off of him. He offered the smaller man a hand, pulling him to his feet.

Roman and Remus locked eyes, Roman giving him a “what the fuck is going on” face. Remus just shrugged, then frowned, as he got a better look at this man.

“This is Remus, the surgeon I was telling you about, Dee! I told you he looked just like Roman.”

That was true. The two of them looked really similar. Besides from some facial differences, their difference in height, and their hairstyles— they could probably be twins.

Remus looked Roman up and down, a hand on his hip. “Oh, I’ve definitely fantasized about this.”

Roman’s eyes widened, and he felt his face heating up. He sputtered for a moment, taking a small step back. “Why— I— who are you?”

“Remus Halva. It’s nice to meet you, beautiful.” He winked, reaching out and taking Roman’s hand. He bowed dramatically and kissed the back of it.

Roman pulled his hand back, smiling and biting his lip.

Emile and Dee looked at each other, both smirking. Emile stepped forward, taking Roman by the arm and leading him back over to the couch. “Cmon, I’m super chilly! We should cuddle and watch Tangled!”

That got Roman’s attention. He grinned and allows himself to be dragged away by Emile. Dee and Remus looked each other over, decided that they would definitely like to cuddle, and followed them over to the couch.

It is inevitably Castiel that chose to tackle taming the back yard after they move into their new house. They are in a corner lot that borders onto the forest on two sides and hasn’t been fenced in yet. The previous owners had obviously left it completely untended for the summer while they were selling the house seeing as it is now overgrown with weeds.

After only about 10 minutes Castiel storms into the house, throws his gloves on the kitchen counter and turns on the sink, vigorously washing his arm.

Dean sets down the instruction manual for the desk from hell that he is attempting to build and moves to stand in the doorway of the kitchen. “Everything alright, babe?”

Castiel casts a scathing look at Dean then goes back to washing his arm. “Everything’s full of poison ivy. At this point I am considering just calling a landscaping company to deal with it.”

“Nah, just point me in the direction of the pesky plants and I’ll get it.”

After shutting off the water Castiel turns and frowns. “No, it’s alright, Dean. It’s a mess out there and I don’t want to risk you getting covered in hives as well.”

Grinning Dean moves to stand in front of Castiel and slides his hands to both of Castiel’s hips. “I’ll let you in on a little secret. I got this weird-ass gene that makes me immune to poison ivy but as a trade off I’m allergic to mangos. If I just touch the skin of a mango I break out like most people do when they touch poison ivy.”

Quirking his head to the side Castiel eyes Dean suspiciously. “That is perhaps the strangest thing anyone has ever told me.”

“Seriously, man, I could go roll around naked in a field of poison ivy and it would be like a normal person rolling around in the grass.”

“Well, I would not recommend rolling around in the foliage out there as I also spotted some wild roses.”

“Got it, keep my pants on and wear the gloves.” Dean winks at Castiel before giving him a quick peck on the lips. He grabs the gloves off the table and heads out the back door. Less than a minute later he comes back in and grins sheepishly at Castiel. “Uhh maybe you should show me what the weeds are otherwise I’ll just wind up pulling everything.”

“Sure thing, just let me change out of these clothes since they’re probably covered in poison ivy.”

Castiel is lounging in one of the rickety deck chairs sipping a beer when Jimmy finally gets home. He gives Castiel a quick peck on the lips before flopping into the other deck chair. “Nice view.” He points to Dean who is bent over the flower bed, hem of his pink panties poking out the top of his jeans.

“The best” Castiel offers Jimmy his beer which he happily accepts.

“So what’s up with the supervisor position? I thought you’d be the one out there on your knees.”

“Poison ivy.” Castiel holds up his arm, an angry red rash now running down it.

“Jesus,” Jimmy leans forward to inspect the damage. “Need me to kiss it better?”

“Please don’t touch it, I already want to cut off my arm.”

Rolling his eyes Jimmy gently takes Castile’s hand and pulls his arm over so he can lay a gentle kiss on Castiel’s wrist. “Of course I’m going to be careful, I’m not a total dumbass.”

The smile that blooms on Castiel’s face is soft and brilliant. “Thanks, Jimmy”

“Anything for you, bro.” He gives Castiel’s wrist another gentle kiss before he releases his hand. “He gestures to Dean “I’m gonna go say hi to the stud muffin over there.” He saunters over to Dean and gives him a firm slap on the ass.

Dean jumps up, flinging his trowel into the brush. “Son of a bitch!”

Jimmy can’t help the loud laugh, “Sorry, just couldn’t resist. You know how much I love your ass.”

“Yeah, I know.” With a sigh Dean bends down to retrieve his trowel. Just as he is about to grab it Jimmy notices the poison ivy near his arm, “Hey, watch out!” he yells as he bats Dean’s arm out of the way.

“Dude what the fuck?” Dean shoots him a bitch face.

“There was poison ivy!”

Dean looks at the poison ivy that is now resting against Jimmy’s arm. “So’s that, dumbass.”

Jimmy’s eyes widen. “Fuck tits.” He says as he gingerly extracts his arm from the brush and eyes it in bewilderment.

Dean gestures towards the house, “Let’s go get you washed up. And order some supper because you and Cas are honestly walking disasters.” The two of them start heading towards the house.

“At least I saved you from suffering.”

Dean stops and turns to Jimmy ‘Dude, I’m immune to poison ivy.”

Jimmy’s mouth drops open, “So I did that for nothing.”

“Fraid so,” Dean shrugs and starts heading towards the house.

The three gathered around the kitchen table looking through various takeout menus. Jimmy holds up one for an Indian place that he’s never heard of. “I could go for some curry.”

Castiel wrinkles his nose at the suggestion. “I hate curry.”

“Dude, we have the same genes, I don’t know how you can hate curry. Curry is like one of my favourite things” Jimmy pouts at Castiel.

Putting down the pizza menu he’d been glancing over Castiel frowns at Jimmy. “Just because we’re twins doesn’t mean we have to like all the same things.  It’s not my fault that I have better taste than you.”

“You do not have better taste.”

“You like Vegimite and you’re not even Australian.” He levels Jimmy with a blank stare. “And dubstep.”

“He’s got you there.” Dean shrugs.

Jimmy pouts at his boyfriends. “You two are asses.”

“No, we just have better taste.” Castiel winks at Jimmy. “Despite your shortcomings I do still love you.”

“Aww, just lay the romance on me, Cassie.” Grinning Jimmy leans and gives Castiel a quick kiss. “So, what do you want then?”

Castiel tilts his head to the side as he thinks for a few seconds. “I could go for some butter chicken.”

Jimmy makes a big show of rolling his eyes and looking at Castiel in exasperation. “Really?” Castiel just shrugs at him in response. Jimmy turns to Dean who is still intently studying a Chinese menu. “How about you, hot stuff?”

“Man I’m just starving; I don’t care what we eat. Just nothing with mangos.” Dean levels Jimmy with a stern look “I’m serious Jimmy. No fucking mangos.”

Rolling his eyes Jimmy walks into the living room with the Indian places’ menu so he can have some quiet as he makes the order. “No fucking mangos, Jimmy” he mutters mockingly as he waits for the dial tone.

For once the three of them are gathered around the kitchen table to eat. Usually they just grab their plates and park themselves on the couch to watch TV. Since they were sharing dishes they decided it was best to eat at the table.  

“What even is that?” Castiel frowns as he pokes at one of the dishes.

Jimmy shrugs and scoops some of it onto his plate. “I don’t even remember what I ordered. Just try it, I’m sure it’s good.”

Castiel wrinkles his nose at the dish and instead just grabs the whole container of butter chicken. Yah they’re supposed to be sharing but there’s no way he’s putting curry anywhere near his mouth.

Dean however has no qualms about eating mystery food so he enthusiastically heaps some of everything on his plate. He takes his first bite of what he assumes is curry and freezes after chewing once. His eyes gradually widen until after several seconds he spits the rice onto his plate.

“wow, gross.” Jimmy says.

“Dude, did you fucking order something with mangos?” Dean is now getting up from the table and heading out of the room.

“I Don’t know, maybe? What’s the big deal?” He yells after Dean who is making a hasty retreat.

“The deal,” Dean pauses in the doorway and scowls at Jimmy, “Is I am allergic to one fucking thing on this planet. Mangos.” He spins on his heal and storms off to the bedroom.

Jimmy gets up and follows Dean. “Shit, I didn’t know! Where are you going?”

“To fucking take some Benadryl and see if I even still have an epi pen.”

“I didn’t even know you had an epi pen!” Jimmy is now hot on Dean’s heels.

“Yah,” Dean spins around and jabs Jimmy in the chest with his index finger. “It’s for when my asshole boyfriend feeds me the one thing I am fucking deathly allergic to.” That being said he spins, stalks into the bedroom and slams the door in Jimmy’s face. After a moment the sound of Cream starts wafting through the house.

“I’m sorry!” Jimmy yells at the closed door. “I just thought you were being weird about mangoes. Like with the asparagus!” He stares forlornly at the door for a couple minutes before shuffling back into the kitchen. “You could have stepped in any time there, Cas.”

Castiel pauses, fork resting in his butter chicken, “No, I think you were doing a good enough job being an ass all on your own.”

Jimmy sighs and slumps further into his chair. “Did you even know he was allergic to mangoes?”

Castiel sets down his fork and then crosses his arms in front of himself on the table. “Yes. When we started dating he told us and has reminded us of this numerous times over the years. Most recently at the grocery store last week when you were holding up a bottle of mango juice and asking him if we should try something new.”

And yah, Jimmy sort of remembers that. Well he remembers Dean saying not to get the juice but he’d honestly forgotten what kind of juice he was even holding up in the first place. He picks up his fork and idly pushes the food around on his plate while he thinks back. Ok yah, maybe the whole mango thing had come up a lot. “I’m kind of an ass, aren’t I?” Castiel snorts and nods his head in the affirmative. Shoulders drooping Jimmy starts eating his dinner.

Dean eventually comes out of the bedroom a couple hours later. His face is puffy and he’s talking with a bit of a lisp. He talks quietly to Cas for a couple minutes before grabbing a tub of lime yogurt from the fridge and retreating to the bedroom.

“Is he still pissed?” Jimmy asks. He’s sitting on the couch wringing his hands slightly and not paying attention to the movie playing on the TV.

“A little but mostly he’s just tired. I’m going to head out to the store to get a couple things, you need anything?”

“Nah,” Jimmy shakes his head. He tilts his head up so that Castiel can give him a quick kiss on the lips. Castiel has his shoes on and is reaching for the front door when Jimmy has the idea. “Cas!” He jumps up and rushes to the door. “Um, maybe you could get Dean that ice cream he likes. With the peanut butter cups and some Dr. Pepper. And maybe a pie. Oh and maybe I should just-”

“Jimmy,” At the sound of his name Jimmy jumps slightly. However, Castiel is grinning at him. “Don’t worry. Just let Dean sleep it off and you can dote on him and apologise 500 times tomorrow.”

“Yah, ok.” Jimmy deflates slightly.

Castiel lays a hand gently on Jimmy’s cheek. “He’s not going to hate you forever, even though you did try to kill him. Remember the first time he let you drive Baby and you backed up into that shopping cart? That was far worse and he forgave you for that.”

Jimmy groans and puts a hand over his face. “Jesus, Cas, I had blocked that from my memory.”

Chuckling Castiel pulls the hand away from Jimmy’s face and leans in to kiss him softly. They kiss gently for a couple moments, Jimmy wrapping his arms around Castiel’s waist and Castiel sliding his hands back to tangle in Jimmy’s hair.

Castiel eventually pulls away and sighs softly into Jimmy’s shoulder. “I need to get going before the grocery store closes and then I’d be forced to go to Walmart.”

Nodding Jimmy steps back and shoves his hands into the pockets of his jeans. “Yah, and, um, thanks for making sure he’s ok.”

“I’d do anything for you two. Which apparently means playing mediator from time to time when you two can’t control your mouths.”

Jimmy shrugs grinning sheepishly at Castiel. “What can I say, I gotta keep you on your toes.”

Jimmy wakes to the sounds and smells of someone cooking in the kitchen. Considering the smoke alarm isn’t going off he’s going to bet that it’s Dean in the kitchen. Jimmy felt so guilty last night that he wound up sleeping on the couch. He gets up slowly, stretching his limbs and cringing at the pop his back makes. He slowly shuffles into the kitchen while trying to rub the last bits of sleep from his eyes.

“Mornin’ sunshine. Was just gonna go wake you.” Dean greets.

“So you’re not mad at me?”

“Not gonna lie, I’m a little pissed still but it was an accident. I’m sure you can find some way to make it up to me.” He sets a plate in front of Jimmy and winks at him.

Relief flooding through him Jimmy picks up his fork and looks over what Dean cooked for him. A huge smile spreads across his face as he realises it’s an omelette with cheese, green onions and sausage. “Anything for you, babe.” He stuffs a giant piece of omelette into his mouth and starts chewing blissfully. It’s about three seconds later when he stops mid chew his eyes going wide. For a moment he ponders the merits of finishing chewing what’s in his mouth or spitting it out.

“Something wrong, darlin’?” Dean grins and watches Jimmy struggle with the mouthful of food.

After a few more seconds he grimaces and valiantly chokes down the omelette. “Uhh, is there cilantro in this?”

“Oh, is there a problem with cilantro? I’m sorry I didn’t know.” Dean tries his best to make an innocent face but every second it morphs more and more into a grin.

“Umm yah. You know that Cas and me got that gene that makes cilantro taste like dirty ass soap.”

“Really now!” Dean tries to feign surprise. “I guess I just forgot or something.”

That’s when the realisation hits Jimmy. He totally deserved this. Yah his mouth tastes like someone took a bar of soap, rolled it around in the mud then shoved it in his mouth but damn did Dean play this well. It starts with his shoulders shaking slightly and slowly grows into his whole body trembling before the laugh bubbles out. He reaches up and grabs Dean by the collar of the shirt. “I love you, asshole.” He pulls Dean down and smashes their lips together. The kiss is awkward and sloppy but the two of them break apart grinning.

“Here, let me get you the omelette that isn’t full of cilantro.” Dean reaches for the plate but Jimmy bats his hand away.

“Nah, I gotta reap what I sew. I think I can manage to eat cilantro this once.” To his credit, Jimmy tries really hard. The first few bites he manages to swallow mostly out of determination. However by the time he gets to the fifth he’s starting to rethink his life. Yah he wants to prove to Dean he can do this but on the other hand he fucking wants to rip out his tongue. Who the fuck even likes cilantro?

After the sixth bite Dean reaches out and takes Jimmy’s plate. His smile is broad and his eyes twinkle with amusement. “Seriously, dude.” He places a fresh omelette in front of Jimmy. “I appreciate your effort but I think you’ve suffered enough.”

“Oh thank god,” Jimmy sighs and grins at Dean. “I love you.”

Dean rolls his eyes, “Yah, I know. Now eat your damn breakfast.”

Your heart started to beat rapidly and your cheeks turned to a tinted pink. You were definitely sure he could kill you with his smile one day. “I’m fine!” You answered a little too quickly. Leaving the class shifted your mood to a whole new level, you were so excited to just eat your food. “Hurry hurry hurry!” You bounced around as you not-so-patiently waited for doyoung to pack his school equipment away. “What’s the rush for , y/n?” “One word. Food!” You said happily , he just smiled at you and shook his head. After he zipped his bag up you grabbed his hand and speed walked all the way to the rooftop. “Welcome to the rooftop!” You exclaimed with a big grin. You pushed open the door and ran to one of the benches to sit on. As you sat down you let out a yelp “what’s wrong?” Doyoung looked at you with worry and you shivered “it’s so cold,” you whisper yelled. Doyoung rolled his eyes , he sat down and he too , let out a gasp “bahahaha, I told you it was cold!” You pointed at him and laughed “I didn’t think it would be this freezing!” He mumbled. “Well it’s metal so it can get really cold...whatever I’m sitting on the ground,” you chuck your bag on the floor and just as you sit down doyoung grand your hand. “Hold on,” he says , he sat down against the wall and looked up at you “come here,” he opened his arms for you and you blushed. You sat down between his legs and leaned on him , he wrapped his arms around you , you soon were warm from the help of his jacket.

“I like this...” you mumbled “me too,” he said. You looked up at him and smiled. He leaned down and connected your lips , it was soft and sweet just like always. “Let’s eat,” you grab your bag and take out the two lunch boxes. “Feed me?” He asked , arms still wrapped around your waist. “Here , my mum made cream cheese bread and since I know you like it a lot I brought some for you,” you lifted the little roll up and put it in front of his mouth. “Open your mouth will you? My arm hurts,” you complained.

He shook his head “feed it to me cutely~” “I hate doing cute stuff though...but fine I’ll try,” you sighed and mentally prepared yourself before starting “open up doyoungie oppa~” you said in a slightly high pitched voice. It was quiet for the next few seconds before he burst out into laughter “do you wanna die!” You shouted as you elbowed him with an annoyed face. He coughed a couple of times before giggling “I’m sorry but please never do that again I think I might pass out!” He didn’t stop laughing and you hit his thigh “I told you I wasn’t good , whatever shut up!” You whined in embarrassment. “Aw is y/n all shy and embarrassed?” He poked your cheek and you could feel yourself going red , so to chuck your feelings out the window you chowed down on the food , ignoring doyoung in the back who was making fun of you.

Suddenly you felt his hand under your chin and he forced you to look at him “I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings babe , I love you and I just wanted to see if you could extend that cuteness of yours,” he looked at you with the most loving eyes and you sighed , mouth still full you muttered out a small ‘I forgive you’ you leaned your cheek against his hand and he kissed your forehead.

The school day ended and you guys were now pushing through the hallway to leave the campus. “Let’s go to the arcade,” you suggested , he nodded “when does your mother finish work?” “Around seven to eight it depends on how busy she is and dad doesn’t come back until next weekend,” “So we can play for about three hours...” “shouldn’t it be four?” “We’ll see,” he smiled at you. Hand in hand you walked to the mall which had the arcade located in it.

Three hours were spent on nothing but game time and competitiveness. He had decided to take it ‘easy’ on you but that didn’t really change anything because he won all the games you played. “Gee doyoung even guys in movies know when to stop and let their girlfriend win because she’s so talented at losing,” you scratched your head and looked up at the dart board. “Let’s go with an easy one....like Pac-Man,” “I’m offended.” You cross your arms and shake your head. “Ohhh I know! Let’s do that gun game that I never knew the name of,” “sure?” “Yeah!” You exclaimed with a happy face.

Once again he won. As expected. But you shrugged it off as you didn’t want to seem like a party pooper. “Alright what now?-actually what’s the time?” “It’s five fifty seven...let’s go for ice cream?” You looked at doyoung before nodding “sure , I could go for that creamy goodness.”

“One mango and vanilla?” The ice cream man called out , doyoung went to go grab the ice creams and you both walked to a nearby park.

It was especially interesting being in Taiwan given that it has been in the US news recently. Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China, considers itself to be an independent country. However, China views it as part of China that will one day be reunified. If a country wants to have diplomatic relations with China, it needs to accept China’s position on this and not have official ties with Taiwan. Trump caused some controversy a couple of months ago when he was the first US leader to take a call from a Taiwanese president since 1979. However, while we were in Taipei, we learned that Trump had spoken to the leader of China and agreed to abide by the “One China” policy. 

Highlights

-Huaxi Night Market- This small market was a combination of some really tasty food and really weird booths and shops. For example, there was one booth where the guy was just selling calculators. There were also an inordinate amount of porn DVD shops. 

-Meander hostel- We loved our hostel. They had several different activities, like a free walking tour through the Ximending neighborhood and a movie night (we watched Pulp Fiction).

-Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall changing of the guard- A huge national monument that is in memory of the former president of the Republic of China. Every hour, there is a changing of the guard ceremony for the guards who are watching his statue. It was quite the show!

-View of the city and Taipei 101 from Elephant Mountain- This was a relatively short hike up (under half an hour), but it was all stairs. I was panting by the time we got to the top, but the view was worth it. We went at sunset so we were able to see the sun going down over the city. 

-Addiction Aquatic- This is a gourmet seafood market. For all you Chicago people, imagine a smaller Mariano’s with just seafood. When you first walk in, there are lots of tanks with crabs. Some of them are HUGE and look like sea monsters.

-Pingxi Lantern festival- As Dan posted before, this is one of the coolest things we’ve done on the trip. The Discovery Channel called this the second biggest NYE celebration in the world. Everyone buys lanterns and writes their hopes and wishes for the year on them and then sends them up in to the sky. There were 8 official launches, where groups send them up together. We bought one earlier in the day with Leslie. There were four different colors on it, representing luck, health, success, and safety. We wrote our wishes for each of these things on the four panels (looking at you, Notre Dame championship). Then the lantern got lit and we sent it up into the heavens! 

-Our market/karaoke evening- We met up with a friend of a friend at Shilin Market (see people section). He brought along two of his friends, and we had some drinks at the Shilin night market. They then took us to the Green Door, a dive bar where their friend’s band was playing. We watched the band, had a bunch of beer, and Leslie and I karaoked to Call Me Maybe. Dan met another new friend and played pool, and we went home at the end of the night tired and smelling like smoke but happy to have made new friends! This was such a random, fun evening, and we are so glad that it happened. 

-Renting bikes- Dan and I rented bikes through the city’s bike system (similar to Divvy in Chicago) and biked around for a couple of hours, mostly by the river. It was a fun way to see more of the city than we would have been able to on foot. 

-Going to Tamsui with Dana, Mark, and Craig- We went to Tamsui, a seaside district, for the afternoon. We grabbed drinks with Craig, Dana, Mark, and their dogs and wandered along the boardwalk. 

-National Palace Museum- This museum has ~700,000 artifacts and art from ancient China. 

Bummers

-It was unseasonably chilly while we were in Taiwan- in the 50′s most of the time. However, it was still warmer than Chicago so can’t complain too much!

-There were a couple of creepy dudes the first night who very intensely stared at us for longer than was comfortable. Fortunately, we didn’t get any of this the rest of the time. I think it’s partly cultural though- it’s not as rude to stare at people in other places the way it is in the US. 

-Leslie leaving- :( :( :( We knew the time had to come but wish it hadn’t come upon us so fast! Leslie headed back to Chicago on the 13th. 

Eats

-Street eats- There was so much good street food in Taipei and it was all so cheap! We stuffed ourselves with the following:

Churro like things- fried dough goodness

Mochi balls with peanuts

Braised pork rice with egg on top (only $1USD)

Pepper bun- cooks by sticking to the inside of this oven, filled with meat and green onions

Popcorn chicken

Small fried crabs that tasted like wheat thins- I enjoyed these (probably wouldn’t have tried them if I hadn’t already had a couple drinks), and Leslie LOVED them

Fried salt and pepper squid- They sell this along the boardwalk in Tamsui. This was another seafood snack that I found myself enjoying, much to my surprise. It’s chopped into small bits and fried so more appetizing than the entire fried squids on sticks. 

Scallion pancakes- I had this three times while in Taipei; it was that good. They fry up a pancake like thing and crack and fry an egg underneath it. You can add stuff to it, so I added cheese and bacon. YUM!

-Shaved ice- a go-to dessert in Taipei. We had mango shaved ice and banana chocolate shaved ice. Such a nice treat and big enough for two people to share. Despite the chilly weather, we had this a couple times during our stay. 

-Breakfast at Fuhang Soy Milk- We read about this place in a food blog so braved the line for Chinese breakfast on our first morning in Taipei. We got so much food for only ~$4USD per person!

-Dumplings at Hangzhou Xiaolong Bao- Because what would another stop in Asia be without dumplings? 

-Addiction Aquatic- I opted out but Dan and Leslie had cheesy oysters, grilled shrimp, and sashimi bento. They seemed quite pleased with themselves.

-Kooks- Restaurant on the mountain that Dana, Mark and Craig took us too. We got our Western food fix (macaroni, pesto chicken burger, and french fries). The owner is married to a Canadian expat and her little kids were running around by us; it was a cool spot!

Drinks

-Bubble tea- At Leslie’s encouragement, I tried tea with boba (the bubble like things) for the first time. It was good and filling! The bubbles are fun to chew on but disconcerting when they shoot up your straw while you’re drinking. 

-Taiwan beer- available in lots of different flavors (mango, grape, honey, etc)

-Ginger tea- available at markets and street food carts. Exactly what it sounds like & good for a cold day.

-Coffee at Wilbeck- This place has fancy brewed coffee and lattes. I got banana hot chocolate. 

-Funky Fresh bar at the Shilin night market- They had a lot of good craft beers and several fruity beers (kept me happy). Also, some guy thought Dan looked like a celebrity and was delighted when Dan let him take his picture with him. 

-Beer and Cheese- This place hit the spot. We had tasty beer and cider and grilled cheese sandwiches. Dan had a Reuben sandwich, and I had a pesto cheddar one.

-Green Door- Craig, Dana, and Mark took us to this local dive bar, complete with cheap beer, locals doing karaoke, and a pool table. It was a good time. 

People

-Leslie- Leslie was our partner in crime once more for our time in Taipei. 

-We met some cool people on our walking tour through the hostel- we later met up with one of them, Philip, and his friend Nacho at the lantern festival. It’s always fun to meet up with fellow travelers. 

-Craig- Our friend Chris connected us with his buddy from his time in Shanghai. Craig took us out to a bar in the Shilin night market and also joined up with us a couple days later. He has been living in Taipei for ~20 years teaching English, so we enjoyed hearing about his experiences. 

-Dana and Mark- We met Dana and Mark through Craig. We hung out with them at the Shilin Market and the dive bar, and then they generously took us out with them to Tamsui a couple days later! It was great getting to know them (and meeting their cute dogs!)

-Aaron- We met Aaron at Green Door. He and Dan instantly bonded, and it was really hard to tear Dan away from their pool game at the end of the night. 

Observations and Insights

-Most likely to die by: gluttony. So much good street food. 

-Taiwan is the most gay friendly Asian country other than Thailand. It could be the first Asian country to legalize gay marriage this year.

-There are lots of stray dogs. Groups of them like to hang out in the grass by the river. We saw a super adorable group of 7 puppies. Dan wouldn’t let me touch them, much to my dismay (although I see the wisdom in that).

-Lots of people are scratching off lottery tickets at little storefronts throughout the city.

-While biking, we saw a lady biking along while listening to opera music. She had two parrots sitting on her handlebars. I aspire to someday be like her.

-We learned that onion is considered a meat for Buddhists.

-The MRT stations have soundtracks for when the train is arriving and departing. When it is pulling into the station, there is either soothing or triumphant music (one that sounds like an exuberant “Here comes the bride” song). When it is about to leave, the train starts making noises designed to stress you out. 

-It is illegal to teach English to children of kindergarten age or younger. However, all of the middle class people want their kids to learn English earlier, so it still happens. In schools where English teachers are teaching the young kids, they have places for the teachers to hide if the school gets raided by the government so that they don’t get deported. 

Tips

-Get an Easycard. You can use these for public transit and also to buy stuff at places like 7-11.

-Cash is more accepted than credit card. Using small change also seems to be appreciated.
