The Aang/Katara/Zuko AO3 Tag: A Decade in Brief Review (2010 - 2020)

Overview: First work 4th February 2010, most recent (within the remit of the review!) is 31st December 2020. As of 2020 there are 117 fanworks (113 fic, 4 art), consisting of 761,806 words by 58 authors.

Number of posted fanworks: The graph indicates in 2010 there were 3 works posted that year and 3 in the tag in total; by 2020, there were 77 works posted that year and 117 works in the tag in total. There is a steady increase until 2019 when there is a very sharp increase, carrying on into 2020.

F: Share a snippet from one of your favorite dialogue scenes you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

Might sound somewhat pretentious, but I’ve always prided myself on writing the most boring, but more or less realistic dialogues; so there’s none in particular that I’m especially proud of! ...Although I’ve been told that the dialogues in Apricity chapter 1 were nice :D Here’s a snippet:

“I guess that old guy was talking shit. In any case, you looked like you wanted to stab him.” She scoffed, secretly glad that she did not have to explain herself after all. “The night is still young. I might get another opportunity yet.” “I hope not,” Zuko said, but she could hear the mischief in his voice. “Too many witnesses in there.”

O: How do you begin a story–with the plot, or the characters?

Tricky question, actually! When, really, does a story begin? If it’s the idea—then characters. In my head, I’m always starting with a piece of dialogue, but the finished product always turns out to set the tone first, I guess. :D

U: Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much.

First of all, the Zutara fandom has literally zero chill when it comes to highly talented writers, so idk how to set criteria for favourite writers??? ((tbh; I also suck big time with pen names and I’m even worse at bookmarking stories I liked, so this is VERY hard for me to answer.))

After some consideration though:

@colourwhirled-writes / ao3: because take a moment and imagine you could write like that?? Holy crap, I almost threw my brand new phone across my room at 4am because of Ozai and his cunt ass shenanigans in Southern Lights, which is a masterpiece. Period. Big time fan of her writing and her story!

MyrsineMezzo: because her story Savior Complex is the only thing that makes me feel like time is real these days. She writes so well, is funny af and has such an amazing grasp on the characters. This story is utterly underrated, though, so please do check it out! ((also, the way she writes Toph? *chef’s kiss’))

Lliyk: because I’m such a sucker for her Zutara ArrangedMarriageAU and her writing is literal poetry; I’m still gaping like an idiot at her story Take Care. Y’all should make money out of your writing.

The assignment? 25 Reasons To Visit Your Local Sex Dungeon. This was a long way away from her normal wardrobe 'how to's. So, research is mandatory. Which means visiting her local sex dungeon: The Blue Spirit.

Zuko, the best rigger The Blue Spirit has, is entrusted with the newbie. He was looking forward to taking down all of this pristine writer's walls.

“Of course you want it my way.” Zuko is saying, eyes closed and taking deep breaths through the part of his reddened lips. His thumb graces the line of her neck. “I knew...” He mutters, then, with topaz eyes locking with hers: “Do you trust me?”

Title: watch the ripples change their size Author: SafelyCapricious Rated: G Summary: Zuko should’ve drowned when he was three. It’s not something he remembers — his mother, called away, had been forced to leave the children with a nanny, despite her feelings of dread that something terrible was going to happen. She’d been much relieved when she’d returned to her darling boy, sleeping peacefully, little hand curled around a stone from the turtleduck pond, and her sweet girl burbling away angrily in her crib.

For Katara there are many close calls, where she thinks the fire should have hit her but it miraculously doesn’t — but it’s when Aang is practicing and she sees the flame coat her skin for an instant that she knows.
