FirstPrince Fic Recs!

In honour of our wonderful film coming out on the 11th of August (2 days can you believe!) I've compiled some of my favourite firstprince fanfics here. Happy reading!

As if there's anything romantic about it; as if it's not the most humiliating death Alex can imagine. This is why he doesn't do relationships. This is why he never will. The risk, as far as he fucking sees it, is too great.

Hanahaki Disease is a fictional disease where the victim of unrequited or one-sided love begins to vomit or cough up the petals and flowers of a flowering plant growing in their lungs, which will eventually grow large enough to render breathing impossible.

Alex is guilty of it too; often the first thing he thinks of after applying to be a counselor is seeing Henry, Henry and his stupid blond hair and stupid English accent and stupidly gorgeous face, and thinking about just how he could outdo him in pranks this year.

Alternatively, the camp counselor AU that nobody asked for.

And every time it happens, Henry expects him to laugh it off or give him a hard time, but instead he just encourages it with soft, pliant lips and greedy fingers until Henry gives in to himself and his desires. Alex has never made him feel bad, or odd, or disgusting, always treats him with the utmost patience and care.

Henry loves him so fucking much.

It's just past midnight on Alex's birthday and he's going to get what he wants. Which is, of course, to give Henry what he wants.

Alex grins and pulls something up on his phone; it looks like it takes him a few tries. "Wanna fucking bet?"

Or: Henry's life is a comedy of errors; a patchwork of oopsie-daisies; a quilt stitched together with hauntingly terrible mistakes. And at the centre of it all is his best friend, Alex Claremont-Diaz; director of said comedy, threading together his oopsie-daisies into a flower crown, rolling around in the quilt of his own making, and this analogy is going to shit because Henry's so in love with him he wants to die.

Alex is 90% sure those exact words are going in this mission report. Yeah, they’re supposed to be objective when writing this shit up, but that isn’t his opinion. It’s a fact.

1 Sad Fic and 10 Happy Ones

My latest fic, a new WIP called A Burst of Daylight, has Henry really going through it. (Please mind the tags, which include past-SA and past violence, both of which are not inflicted by any of the characters from RWRB.) You can read the first chapter here.

To heal your heart after reading the first chapter, I’ve compiled 10 of my favorite happy RWRB fics. My first rec list! Fic descriptions written by yours truly.

It’s a bit like his mind is buffering as he makes sense of it. It’s so little information, yet so much all at once. Like someone’s thrown an encyclopedia at his head and given him a cliff notes explanation expecting him to know it word for word. “That would mean—I’m dating James Bond?” He blinks, sitting up straight. “Oh my god,” he exclaims with sudden realization. “I’m a Bond Girl.”

It’s one of the things that make them Alex-and-Henry; the silent conversations and the contentment in each other’s company. Now, as Alex starts to flourish through his position on the lacrosse team, his slew of AP classes, and his role in student government, getting him to slow down at all is a feat. All trains had left the station. Or, Alex asks a stranger to crack his back like a glow stick. Or, an overnight train meet-cute.

Following the election, the boys are back on their relative continents and back to their lives. And it sucks. It may only be a month until New Year's but things are different now: they're out to the world, Alex is the official suitor of the Prince, and they're talking about New York and the Brownstone and Law School. Alex misses Henry. Out loud. He's allowed. "Sure you'll find something to keep you busy." Henry will regret saying that. Probably.

"The bird fucking bit me," Alex tells her before she can get a word out. June blinks. "What?" "And I'm bleeding." "What?" She repeats. Alex just holds up his hand, the bundle of tissues now somewhat sticking to his wound. "Alex," she starts, exasperated, "what the actual fuck?" On the evening of Wednesday, November 27th, 2019, the First Son of the United States, Alexander Claremont-Diaz, sustained minor injuries after contact with a wild turkey. Out of abundance of caution, Mr. Claremont-Diaz was transported to Walter Reed Medical Center for evaluation and treatment, as is protocol after contact with a wild animal. Or, Alex is dramatic, (definitely) antagonizes a turkey, and everyone thinks he's overreacting.

Unfortunately for him, the only things more beautiful than Alex himself are Alex’s cakes. He’s the most in-demand cake artist in the city, and as such he books a lot of weddings. Many of the very same weddings that simply must also have Fox Florals arrangements for their centrepieces. Weddings like, apparently, this one. (Or, Henry the florist and Alex the cake artist are forced to collaborate last minute at a wedding job, make a mess, and learn some things about each other in the process.)

“He looks kind of like a cross between a sickly Victorian orphan and the personification of the bubonic plague. I feel like I should be walking in with a Medico Della Peste plague mask and a stick,” Alex says into the phone while wearing his version of a hazmat suit (last week's sweats that need to be laundered expeditiously). He looks out into the carnage of his sleeping bedridden roommate in dismay. So maybe he doesn't need to rob a bank, but robbing a Starbucks for Henry’s happiness might be in order. He rips off the rubber gloves and grabs his shoes. “Fuck it, we ball.” Or Alex is willing to go to great lengths in order to make Henry happy, great lengths indeed.

He leans down to press a kiss on Alex’s forehead. “I’ll be right back.” — Alex is on his period. Henry takes care of him.

He pulls out his phone for a moment. Google’s “voice fine but can’t make myself talk” and then adds ‘ADHD’ on the end for good measure. He scrolls and few moments later he finds it. Going nonverbal is like walking barefoot on pins and needles when everyone else but me came prepared with steel-toed boots. Alex clicks off his phone and tosses it on the bedside table. Maybe, he thinks, he should’ve got that autism assessment. (or, sometime between christmas and new year, alex goes nonverbal during a party.)

Room For Rent (Sex Dungeon Not Included) by everwitch

When Alex comes, he only knows two things: that he’s good, and that he’s Henry’s. And that’s all he needs to know. Alex’s housemate has a sex dungeon. It’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect; whips and bondage gear and a chair that looks like something a gynecologist would have use for. Alex, being the chill, sex-positive guy he is, is of course extremely cool with this. Totally normal about it. Enthusiastically supportive, even. But as Alex watches Henry invite a steady stream of men into his dungeon, he develops one tiny little issue with the arrangement: he desperately wants to take their place.

“Fuck, marry, kill?” Alex suggests, mostly joking. Nora kicks gently at his thigh. “That could be fun.” “Wait, I was ki-” “Celebrities only or are we allowing real people?” Probably-Samantha poses. “Celebrities are real people, Samantha,” Pez says. Alex pushes down the rush of satisfaction that he had remembered her name correctly. “Non-celebrities should be fair game,” Alex insists, and Henry’s gaze meets his before quickly darting away. There’s a slight flush to his cheeks, like maybe the drink in his hand isn’t his first. Or second, even. Jesus, his face is pink. --- aka, FMK as a plot device

With a smirk, Alex holds out his other hand, palm up. “I’m not giving you twenty dollars,” Henry says with a laugh. “We had a bet, sweetheart.” Henry grabs Alex’s outstretched hand and pulls him in for a quick kiss. “You had a bet. I ignored you.” “I really thought we were gonna get all the way through this one without her saying ‘palatial’ but she pulled it out right at the last minute.” He slides a finger into the belt loop of Henry’s jeans and yanks him close. “You know, I really do forget, every once in a while, that you’re a prince. Good thing I have the New York real estate market to remind me.”

'Tell him, you idiot,' Nora mouths at him, and Alex grimaces. He’s been over it with Nora so often and somehow, she is convinced that there’s a 99% chance that Henry would react positively. Alex can’t see it. He can’t even see 1%. Ever since they’ve started college together, Henry’s not dated at all. He has talked about the women his family has tried to push on him as “reasonable matches” though. Alex, on the other hand, has tried distributing his attention equally throughout the dating pool and failed miserably. How can he focus on anyone else when Henry – the sole object of his heart’s desire – is right there? If Liam could see him now, he’d probably laugh his head off.

“Please,” Alex begs, on fire with a clawing desperate need. “Fuck, please, I’ll do anything. Henry.” Henry, entire body rigid with tension, slowly shakes his head. Alex sees his mouth – red from where Alex has been kissing him, biting him, well on his way to eating Henry alive – form the word no, even though he can’t hear it past the blood rushing in his ears. Then Henry turns and leaves, and Alex digs his fingers into the cheap plywood of his own desk as he tries desperately not to fall to the floor. Which is not, as it turns out, where this story starts.

Sweet Dreams of Holly and Ribbon by villageidiot

He falls asleep on the loveseat, Nora and June curled up on the couch across from him, as a terrible Hallmark Christmas film plays in the background. It’s the fourth night of sleeping alone—Henry taking care of some business back in the palace—and he’d rather wake up cold and cramped across from the two of them than alone in his own bed. That’s how Alex falls asleep. That is not how he wakes up.

“This is kinda boring, ma.” She pats him on the cheek, leans in a little closer, and says, “Find something to do, darlin’. You live here. You can’t leave.” She’s not exactly right, but he isn’t going to argue. Plus, her main advisor, Zahra, comes over. Alex is already a little afraid of her, so he doesn’t feel the need to draw attention to himself by smarting off at the mouth. She’s still talking to him when he spots this really beautiful guy about his age, and fuck, wow. Okay. “Not him,” his mom says into his ear, and he doesn’t even… Look, if she knows about the few guys he made out with at parties in Madrid last year when the opportunity arose, this is the first he’s hearing of it. “His dad is the British ambassador. I can’t have you breaking hearts and causing an international incident.” OR: Ellen Claremont is the US ambassador to Canada. Arthur Fox is the British Ambassador to Canada.

“That floor doesn’t look like it’s very comfortable on your knees, is all.” Henry leans forward, scooping out a piece of brownie that got under the counter, somehow. “I wouldn’t worry about that—my knees are quite used to it, I assure you.” A ringing silence follows this pronouncement, during which Henry focuses very hard on opening a trap door directly into hell with the power of his mind. Or, five times Henry puts his foot in his mouth in front of his customer crush, and one time he puts his dick in his customer crush's mouth instead doesn't.

Alex can’t remember his first words. He can’t recall the melody to the lullaby his parents often sang at his bedside to get him to sleep, nor the name of his sister’s imaginary friend that they had tea parties with on the floor of her bedroom. But he knows they existed. That it all happened and that each of those little, seemingly insignificant moments had built him up and formed him into the person he is today, even if he can’t recall every one of them perfectly. But he can remember, as clear as if it’d been only moments ago, the day that he found out what the red band around his wrist meant, imprinted underneath his skin with a small gap right over his pulsepoint, waiting for the day the ends would meet.

But you’re not scared of that, right?” -- Henry decides to get a tattoo. It comes with more than one kind of aftercare. (Finale to the only thing on my mind series)

“You should ask her to dance.” She nudges Alex, and Alex pretends there isn’t a flush rushing up to his face. He opens his mouth to mention every single fucking reason dancing with the blonde is a bad idea—she looks about a foot taller than Alex, objectively uncomfortable for some fucking reason, and Alex is against royalty on, like, principle—but then June nudges him again with widened eyes. “Come on. You know you want to, and I’m sure she’d appreciate it. None of the other fuckers are asking her because of how tall she is.” For a moment, Alex glares at her. Then, he downs his champagne, shoves it in June’s face and tries to smooth his jacket. “You fucking owe me, June,” he says and ignores the brilliant smile that appears on her face. “Don’t act so fucking upset about it.” Or, 5 times Henry is too scared to come out to Alex and 1 time Alex gives him the courage. Or, 6 times Alex slowly falls in love with Henry Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor, for exactly who he is.

I know you from your Tarlos fics and love every single one of them. So thank you in advance for making the indomitable trial known as "waiting" so much more tolerable 💜💜💜!! oh nonnie, this is so sweet of you! I'm so glad you like my Tarlos fics and am so very excited to hear that you've also fallen in love with RWRB!

honestly, there is SO MUCH good RWRB fic out there, I'd be here all day if I listed all of the fic authors/fics I recommend, but my tag with RWRB fic recs is here and I'm going to point you in the direction of the excellent @rwrbficrecs blog for curated lists of fic recs as well.

Some of my personal favourite RWRB fic authors are (and this is a very biased list, they are my friends, I've beta read for them all but for the most part I loved their writing before I "met" them so there is some level of objectivity here):

@indomitable-love (indomitablelove) and in particular, her post-canon universe - no one makes me sob (in a good way) like she does

@clottedcreamfudge (clottedcreamfudge) for her very specific brand of humor, feelings and sex

@everwitch-magiks (everwitch) and her incredible AUs

@three-drink-amy (allmylovesatonce) for Feelings TM of the angst flavour but always with the pay off of a very happy ending (she also writes Tarlos fic, so you may have read some of hers?)

@athousandrooms (athousandrooms) for fluffy feelings and so much love

Hi I’m the characterization anon and I was thinking fics that stay true to their personalities.

Hi Anon! I’ll be honest – this was a really hard ask for us to respond to, just because there are so many fics that we think have great characterization. In general, I (personally) think that all of the fics that I’ve included in the “main” lists more or less stay true to their personalities. (I don’t want to make that statement about all the fics recommended in the asks just because I haven’t read them all myself!). You can find all the main lists in the Tag Catalogue ❤️ It’s also quite subjective – and without getting too into it, I think we do all perceive characters differently so what feels “in character” to me might actually feel out of character to others.

Sorry I know that’s not exactly helpful but here’s a few authors who I think write their personalities really well, and also just have really amazing fics in general. Just a disclaimer that this is not a definitive list. There are so many authors out there who have done an amazing job with Alex & Henry’s characterization but this is just a quick list off the top of my head. If anyone would like to add other authors that they feel have great characterization, please feel free to add in the comments because I have definitely missed a lot!! ❤️

(Some of) My fave fics of 2022

So, I only joined ao3 in June/22, but I've loved it so much, both reading and writing for it. It truly gave me life. So I thought I'd do a little rec post with my favourite things I read on ao3 last year.

They are mainly RWRB with one outlier for Heartstopper, the fandom that brought me to ao3 in the first place.

I'm sticking with things that were published in 2022, just to have some sort of system. And I'm limiting myself to 5 or I'd be here forever! There's just so much good stuff out there, what a privilege to be able to read people's work like that, for free, at the tips of my fingers.

Here we go, in no particular order:

Yellow Curtains, by iphigenias (Heartstopper, T) - a canon divergence, where Nick and Charlie don't kiss at Harry's party. Nick takes his time to figure himself out, there's poetry, and it's lyrical and beautiful. The last couple of lines (before the texts) give me goosebumps every time I read them.

Never Did Run Smooth by the queen CCF (RWRB, E) - an AU, which is my favourite kind of fic, where Alex and Henry are best friends and end up in a reality show together and fall in love (well, Alex does). Pining is my Achilles heel and Henry pines SO HARD in this, it's amazing.

Route 11 by LolaLand (RWRB, E) - It's a public transport AU! There's lots of banter and chatting, and a slow build up of their feelings, which I love. It's also set in London (hooray!), and I once saw a bus catch fire just like the one in this story, and I love it when a story feels so close to life. Which brings me to the next fic...

Green Means Go by indomitablelove (RWRB, E) - Alex is an exchange student in the UK, he meets Henry at a traffic light party, and, well... I love this for lots of reasons, but having Alex experience Freshers week really resonates! It has a great dancing sequence, which is one of my favourite things in a fic.

to the victor, the spoils and the prequel/sequel What, like it's hard? by railmedaddy (RWRB, E) - Alex and Henry as lawyers AU! It has everything: a great twist, excellent smut, and a universe that just keeps on giving.

Well, it’s Saturday. But have some recs!

This week’s theme: Rec a “gateway” fic - a fic that you read and it was so good it lead you to read multiple works by the same writer.

The rules: Tag a fic and explain why it was a gateway fic / what you liked about it. Then tag some people to see what everyone else is reading. Spread the love! (A couple things, just in general: first, I am still very new to reading in this fandom, so I’m still standing in many of these gateways. Second, I am a kudos-and-comment reader, so if you don’t see my name in your serotonin section, please assume that I haven’t yet read your fic / update (but will soon, because I am slowly but surely consuming all the things).)

We've been blessed with so many post-finale/honeymoon takes, but this is one of the two that haunts me. It's quiet and moody and beautifully introspective, as Carlos comes to grips with the end of escapism and reality starts creeping in again. There's this distinct sense of before and after, especially as he reflects on the things he would've brought back to the real world with him, if his life still made sense, and there's so much insight here, in the objects he chooses for his parents, in the way he thinks of his father, in the way he sees TK. And I felt so at home reading this, not just because it's such a well-drawn story (though it is), but because of the way, every few paragraphs, there'd be a line phrased precisely the way I would have, and I'd get the strangest sense I was reading the best work I'd ever done that I'd somehow forgotten I'd written. I can't wait to read everything Maddie's done, including the handful of fics in another fandom we share.

And here's the other! I am utterly infatuated with this fic — the way it's written, the way it's paced, and the way Lola lets Carlos plain not be okay. It's such a starkly beautiful story about grief and the way it ebbs and flows like the tide, the way it can pull you under or see you safely back to shore and you never know which wave you're riding. Lovelier still, somehow, is her TK, and all the things he does to help Carlos stay afloat. This one is still in progress (and I have a date this weekend with the last couple chapters), but it's the reason why Lola's Seven Ways (Back to You) series is next up on my Marked for Later list.

Fire Island by @carlos-in-glasses

I was remiss in not reccing this last week, for the "fics that start with the first letter of your username" theme — it certainly deserved a spot. This was not only the first fic I read of theirs, it's one of the first fics I read in the fandom. And it's such a rich, bittersweet story, one of those quietly beautiful pieces that lovingly punches you in the gut. The OCs are so well-realized, and the boys' love is so warm and lived-in that it feels like a lifeline, like a thread of hope to hold on to as we hear these tragically beautiful stories of boys past. This is the whole reason I got so excited for the swimfic, which is posting now.

You Keep Coming Back With A Bird In Your Teeth by vaguenotion

I can't even. I got so wrapped up in reading this that I started work two hours late. Writing a rec for this apparently isn't going to be any better than my feeble attempt at feedback, so I'll just say this: the prose is gorgeous, the character voices are unreal (fueled by a truly next-level TK POV), and it surprises me with every word. It's not even finished and it's already one of my very favorite things in this fandom, and everyone should read it. It's the author's first Tarlos fic, but they've got a fan in me for life.

Something about who should fill the dishwasher, or maybe it was whose turn it was to empty it? TK couldn’t fully remember what they had argued about, he just knew that they'd both left the condo angry with each other and hadn’t said their usual goodbyes or ‘I love you’s before separating at the door, Carlos into his car and TK into a waiting Uber. TK’d taken an Uber to work so that he didn’t have to share an angry car ride with Carlos, not wanting to stew any longer in such a tense silence.

TK wished with everything that he’d swallowed his pride and taken Carlos’ offer of a ride one last time. Perhaps then, the feelings of guilt wouldn’t be as strong as they were right now.

And Carlos didn't know how long it took for the ring in his ears to deafen until the point he could hear the dispatcher he had on the line, but he was almost sure she had said something about help being outside the house already.

"I need you to stay awake," she said, and Carlos turned his head to the side just to see the flames closer than it should be, the vivid orange being reflected by the dark walls and mixing with the red and blue lights coming somewhere from the outside. "Sir, are you listening?"

Or, TK and Carlos have a fight over Owen and his stupid actions, and Carlos is alone when the fire starts ― and even more when, for him it ends.
