Can the Redacted Characters Skateboard

Hi and welcome back to bullshit that I wrote while on a hiatus to avoid actually working on WIPs and then shoved into my scheduled posting so i didnt have to worry about it.

Also if this has already previously been done, can someone please tell me so I can delete it because i dont wanna be a content thief. That always fucking sucks. (I say as I make up things about characters that Erik made up.)

OKAY LETS GOOO

Starting off strong with the Shaw pack and their respective partners.

David: Man had zero interest in actually learning to skateboard. He preferred learning to drive or ride a bike if he needed transportation. But he learned it with Asher when they were kids. Since being able to drive though he stopped practicing and now he’s rusty. He can skate and do basic ollies but that’s it.

Angel: No. They are clumsy. They get on a skateboard and immediately fall over. Wrap them in bubble wrap because they will get hurt but they will continue trying because they’re stubborn as all hell.

Asher: Yes. I headcanon he’s a skater boy so fucking hard you don’t understand. Man got obsessed with skating when he was in fifth grade and begged David to learn how to skate with him. He got so many injuries, Marie told him that she wouldn’t heal him for his skating injuries anymore. But he kept at it and when David started driving, he would be skitching to David’ car/truck all the fucking time. He also knows how to make his own boards and do a bunch of cool tricks.

Baabe: Baabe started to learn skating in middle school but then stopped. Asher taught them when they got together and now they go to skate parks and go on skating dates every now and then. it’s very cute. Asher made them a matching board to his.

Milo: No. This man sits on a board and uses both his feet and hands to make it move. He can at least balance on it unlike Angel but don’t ask him to push. He will fail and he will fall into traffic.

Sweetheart: They were able to skate in middle school but then stopped because they kept going invisible while on the street and people would try to stop a runaway skateboard. It ended up getting them and others injured so then they stopped. Now they’re too busy to see if they still retain any of their basic street skills.

Darlin: Abso-fucking-lutely. This is their main mode of transportation when they aren’t running. They continuously try to skate through the woods and fail every time because it’s not a stable enough surface. However they are a longboard user since they view street boards as hella cliche and they refuse. Also they like asking Asher to make longboards since he dislikes making the fuckers.

Sam: Yes. Especially post-turning. Man has reflexes and can make the skateboard go zoom with his vamp speed. But he doesn’t do it anymore because skateboarding at night can be kinda dangerous due to low visibility and he doesn’t like drawing attention to himself.

Arden: yes. I just get skater girl vibes from her. I can’t explain why. But I could see Asher making her an eggboard cruiser.

Christian: No. He tried to learn so he could be better than Asher but he fails harder than Angel. Everyone thought it wasn’t possible, but he proved them wrong. Congrats Christian.

Amanda: No. She didn’t have any interest in learning.

Now onto the Solaire vamps!

William: I wanna say yes simply for the mental image of this fabulous man skating down the street while Vincent and Sam stare on in shocked horror, but Imma have to say no. He will finance skateboards, but he doesn’t know. Darlin did try to teach him how to skate with a longboard but he looked at the board then at them and politely declined.

Vincent: Are you kidding me? Of course this flamboyant fucker knows how to skate. He only got better when he was turned. He prefers driving cars, but he likes skitching to one of his cars while Lovely is driving. It’s very fun. But he continuously tries to do tricks with a longboard and fails every time since that’s not what they’re made for. He’s too stubborn to stop though. His streetboard is so scratched up please get it some TLC.

Lovely: They’re in the process of learning because Baabe and Asher told them about their skate dates and they think that’s cute. Vincent is a horrible teacher though so their learning is going very slowly.

Alexis: No. This is commoner activities and therefore below her.

Adam: No. He’s missing a head. Usually pretty important when one wishes to skate. Thoughts and prayers dude.

DAMN squad!

Huxley: FUCK YES! This dude is a skateboarding king. He has a cruiser though since he just likes the chill vibes of cruising everywhere. It’s especially helpful on campus.

Damien: No and it frustrates him to no end. Huxley has tried teaching him, but he’s not able to pick it up. And everytime he gets frustrated he ends up damaging the deck so he stopped trying.

Lasko: No. He’s way too anxious to be confident about his balance so he always falls whenever he tries to put his foot on the back deck. He’s content with just walking, thank you.

Lasko’s listener (Kinda excited to see what pet name they get.): Yes. The confidence that is dripping (heh get it?) from this being is tangible, even from just one video. They seem pretty confident in their abilities, so that would serve them well for skating. Whether I think they do skate or not is still kinda up in the air. I can kinda see them being like that on tiktok teacher who skates around in the building ona cruiser. They give off a really chill teacher vibes (They literally wanted to start up a workplace romance, that seems pretty chill to me) so I could see them cruising down the hall with a stack of graded papers in their bag. Also they would totally skate during a storm. They’re a water elemental so they can probably control the element enough to make sure their wheels don’t slip too much. Lasko did say they were pretty good at their magic, so I could see them having that level of control.

Freelancer: Yes. Huxley taught them, so they only know about cruisers, but they’re okay with this. They get to cruise around campus and everything and it makes them feel cool.

Gavin: He has no need for it, but Freelancer has been begging him so he relents. Huxley and Freelancer are teaching him right now. It’s slow going since he would much rather just tease them both though.

Caelum: No. He can’t. But he’s very energetic when following after Freelancer when he can. He’s happy they found another activity that helps loosen the knots inside them. He’s a hype-boyo.

Meridian and Sovereign storyliners!

Vega: No. It’s a human custom so therefore he has zero interest in it. Also it holds no purpose to further his goals so why would he bother learning?

Warden: No. They were too busy to learn how and they also didn’t really care. It’s just a skateboard, but there are people that need their help. Also they’re too busy trying to fight off the never ending hunger.

Avior: He’s wanted to learn but has been a bit busy the past several months/hour.

Starlight: They know the basic push and ollies so they can easily get around but that’s it. They’ve been a bit busy too. Plus they like walking. It’s good for them.

Cam: (he needs to be here for organization sake) He has a cruiser. It’s nice to be able to to take a small break and just go past some flowers or parks and soak up how everyone is having a pretty good day. He doesn’t get the chance very often though sadly.

Asset: Yes but only because they know everything and have the ability to go through with it. They have never stepped foot on a skateboard and don’t have any plans to.

Marcus: No he’s a whiny little baby bitch. He would fall into traffic.

James: No, he’s a runner not a skater. But we respect him for it.

James listener: Yes. They don’t wanna be a marathon runner like James, but they wanna be able to go with him during his runs so they have a cruiser and they know how to use it. That’s it though.

Anton: Yes. I can feel it in my bones, if the workplace was more chill he would have an eggboard and that would be how he’d get around within the facility.

Anton’s listener: No. I get a gentle plant parent vibe from them. But they like seeing how content Anton gets when he gets to skate.

Brian: (i think that’s his name) No. He just wants to go home to his family bro. Plus he plays tennis (hc). Being a tennis player makes him above skaters. (lovingly said.)

Blake: Yes and he’s annoyingly good at it. He impresses his listener every time he does because they always think he’s not gonna be any good and then he proves them otherwise. Whether they’re dreaming or not when they see this and are impressed is unimportant. What’s important is that he impresses them and has their attention. What, are you not feeling drowsy? Don’t worry about that, look at this cool flip he can do.

Blake’s Listener: They have a skateboard that they have not touched since 3rd grade. So no, they cannot. They don’t remember and they didn’t practice long enough as a kid for it to be in any kind of muscle memory.

Elliot: Absolutely. This is another born, raised, and bred skater boy. He loves putting stickers all over the underside of his deck. It looks like someone vomited the definition of multi-fandom all over it. He also needs to get a new board before his deck snaps in half, but he’s too attached to it to do so.

Sunshine: Yes. After their accident, they were a bit scared to drive again so they learned how to skate in an effort of alternate modes of transportation. It was a necessity. But they met Elliot at a skate park when they were practicing turning and he helped them out. They became friends and then you know how the story goes.

Brachium: No. He has no access but Sunshine has told him about skating and he’s happy for them.

Unempowered!

Aaron: He got interested when Elliot got obsessed and he tried it out but then decided against actually dedicating time to learn. But he gave Elliot stickers to put on the deck.

Smartass: Aaron mentioned that he gave up learning while Smartass was half-asleep. The next morning they went out and bought a board to prove that they were going to learn and be better than Aaron. So they’re in the process of learning and everytime they feel like giving up because it offers nothing for them besides bragging rights, spite makes them continue. We wish them luck on their spiteful journey.

Ollie: No he doesn’t. He was more into playing board games inside then going outside to learn how to skateboard or anything. He knows his name is related to a skating maneuver but that wasn’t enough to make him have any interest.

Baby (Ollie): No. They’re content with playing board games with Ollie. They like being indoors instead of outdoors anyways.

Ivan: He learned but never put his skills to use. So theoretically he knows how to skate but we aren’t sure.

Baby (Pre-Vega’s Ivan): Yes. They learned with Ivan, and actually put the skills to use. So they do know how to skate and it’s a fun hobby for them to learn new little tricks.

Baby (post-Vega’s Ivan): No. They don’t. They didn’t have any interest and still don’t even after being freed and memory modified. Skateboarding isn’t for everyone and that’s fine.

Guy: yes and he’s horrible at it. He knows how but he likes messing up because then he can go to Honey about his “boo-boos”s and try to convince them to kiss the scrapes and bruises better. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

Honey: Yes and they’re good at it. Their favorite thing to do when just skating around is a Dragon flip (also known as the 360 dolphin flip) they think it’s fun and they would do it continuously if they could. But every chance they get, they’re at least doing a dozen of them.

Geordi: He’s too anxious to actually be confident (like Lasko) but he really wants to learn. It seems less exhausting than running. He also thinks it looks cool.

Cutie: No they can’t, and street boarders thoughts are a bit too intense for them to even want to learn or try. They know Geordi wants to try, but they aren’t going to mention skateboarding because then they would have to worry about Geordi’s thoughts getting like the street boarder’s.

Regulus: He’s invisible, we will never know if he’s a secret skater boy. He’s very good at doing flips inside your mind though.

Regulus Listener (Precious I think they’re called? Getting Gollum vibes ngl): Why do you need to go outside? Inside you can be with Regulus. That’s all you want, not to see if you can skate. Inside with Regulus, safe from those who want to take him away from you. To separate the two of you. Why are you crying? Oh, he understands. Those are tears of joy aren’t they? Don’t worry, he’ll wipe them from you as he makes you lay dormant to his every whim. Isn’t this the life you wanted?

As far as her major goes she’s definitely an art major, probably double majoring in Art History and Illustration/ Painting with a minor in business. That tattoo/ piercing shop can’t be staffed & eventually ran by just anybody!

Edit: Yes this means Matty would have to take Alcina’s class…sorry Alcina…

I haven’t thought too much about extracurriculars but Matty definitely, and somehow, finds time to party & go out with Angie (& sometimes Dani). If she was going to find time for any clubs it’d be the skateboarding club and/or costume. Matty owns quite a few different boards but prefers her trusted drop-down, drop-through longboard for riding & dancing. She has a passing interest with costuming for cosplay and would probably join the club just cause, only staying if it captures enough of her attention.

Here’s two pics of my personal longboard (which i haven’t had time to ride recently, oops) as an example. This is my only complete board at the moment. It is a drop-down drop-through which just means that not only does the board curve down right after my trucks (what the wheels are on), the trucks are mounted through the board instead of being under it like on a regular longboard/ skateboard :)

In the pro skater AU do you have plans for Plum and Grey? My brain went to Plum doing figure skating, something with similar mechanics but more “refined” but I know classic Peach does that. Grey I thought maybe does BMX, I don’t know just seems fun. Definitely is also constantly helping Peach repair her gear

We had a chat on the discord and the general vibe was that peach is the reckless idiot skateboarder, goes for massive air time, some sick flips, an adrenaline junkie. She’s found it impossible to get signed because she’s so difficult to work with, and gets in trouble with the cops for skating places she shouldn’t be at, petty crime, nothing crazy but enough to put sponsors off. Her skill however is very high, she lives for the sport. Grey is super chill, also a skateboarder like her but not as brave, better at street tricks, can do some crazy things on rails, off walls, cruises on a longboard on his days off, high speed down those hills with the gloves that have the metal plates on them. He’s however nervous and competitively he ranks way lower than his skill due to his own ability to self sabotage through fear and stage fright. Plums the agent, assigned two hopeless clients no one else wanted to work with, one too hot, one too cold. She can’t get anyone to take them on, has had to bail peach out of jail, coax grey from the locker rooms when spooked. She sees their skill.

Eventually she uses her own money to make sure they get into the competitive scene, becomes their boss, and finds ways to bolster them both. They teach her how to skate, she buys a little penny, all three coasting around town at sunset laughing, beers by an empty pool looking at the stars. They respect her, she put everything on the line, so they do the same. Grey grows confident and ranks higher than ever to prove he’s worth her payout, and peach throws herself into frankly dangerous tricks to win and make her boss look good, make sure all those bail outs from the cops aren’t for nothing. Does she break a few ribs and keep skating anyway? You bet.

Peach’s boards are constantly switching, she snaps them, breaks bearings, busts trucks, but favours the classic setup. Her old faithful cruiser looks like it belongs in a bin but she loves it.

Greys adaptive, likes to longboard a lot, cruise around freely when not doing tricks and perfecting routines with his regular board. For sure he’s the one ordering parts and helping with repairs.

Plum grew to love this little teal and red penny the duo bought her, it’s compact and nippy, suits her. She can nearly do a kick flip. Has yet to land if. The other two believe in her, coolest boss they’ve ever had.

The Final Year...

The Final Projects:

Keeper (working title) - Cinematography

TBC - Sound Design

3 years in and it's graduation film time. No more silliness - it's time to strap in. Yeah, I'm sad about it too.

Anyways, here's a little about where I'm at going into these two specialisms in my final year:

I'm wanting to do cinematography on a graduation project as I feel like my skills have improved a lot in the last year having shot The Play and Longboard Nights, the latter of which was one of the first films I've had screened at a festival. I think my main weaknesses are creating a consistent visual style and designing coverage. On the last short I shot, there was some kind of random lensing, sparse coverage and lighting mistakes. This year I want to sort out these problems while consolidating the things that did work, namely the dynamic camera-work, dirtying of the image and the collaboration with my groupmates. I'm working again with Ben McMorran (director of Longboard Nights) as we developed a really great working relationship on that film which I think helps me to do my best work. I'm already thinking of ways I can play with the image to muddy it up that works for this story and working out how I want the camera to feel (more on this later).

I also want to be doing sound design as this has been something I've really enjoyed since second year. I enjoy the endless, limitless creativity that you have in a sound design - if you can think it, you can do it. Last year, I did the sound design for About That One Time, an experimental documentary. While the film didn't totally work narratively, I think it still packs an emotional punch and this was the piece of sound work I've been most proud of to date. I'm now at the point where my recording skill is starting to get up to scratch and I know my way around ProTools enough to be able to achieve exactly what I set out to with that project. Aside from location recording, there's not much with sound design that worries me at all and while I don't have a project locked in yet, I'm very excited for developing my sound craft further.

Project 1 - Keeper (working title)

The project I'm doing cinematography for is trucking along very nicely, I think - we have all our Head of Department roles filled and the script has been through a couple of drafts. The team:

Writer/Director: Ben McMorran

Sound Design: Rosie Playford

Production Design: James Stevenson

Editing: Jake Sommerville

We also have Eilis Fraser (an old favourite) joining as a production assistant. Lucy's already got us into a rhythm where we understand how we are moving forward as individuals and as a group. We had our first production meeting last week where we each went through our individual roles and responsibilities and outlined how we would best want to work together (don't talk to Rosie when she's sound designing!). I'm really happy with the first draft of the script I saw - it's quite different from how it was first pitched to me, but all the changes are for the better. I can already feel all the beats and visualise the scenes and the characters really well.

The story follows a teenager (Will) as he tries out for a county football team. Specific moments in the script really stand out for their tension and humanity. One pivotal scene shows Will becoming stressed during a free-kick, unable to defend his goal properly - a cinematic and literal set-piece. Early ideas in my mind rely on lots of coverage to allow for quick intercutting, lots of camera movement and, to borrow an idea from my last film, a wide shutter angle. Longboard Nights was shot at a 270 degree shutter angle for accentuated motion blur to add to the panicked emotions of the characters. I think the approach worked well for that film and could also work really well for this story as well, however, I would only use it this time for this specific moment in the script.

I'm also thinking of being quite patient and restrained in shot sizes and framings, not pushing anything too much, allowing the audience to observe the story through Will's eyes, especially the quieter moments after the trial. I wrote in my research agenda and rational, about using some more oblique or unconventional framings to add subtext to the narrative, using examples from Tar (2022) and Widows (2018). One idea I talked to Ben about briefly was using the frame to represent convention or conformity. Because the film is dealing with someone struggling to live up to expectations, the camera could be used to frame where he's supposed to be, rather than where he is. Maybe he's small, so there's an awkward amount of head room. Maybe he's not on his mark in goal, so he's half out the frame. Maybe the coach calls him over and the camera doesn't follow him in, just waits for him.

But yeah, all of this is just ideas, nothing is locked in. We had our first pitch today, which went well? Ben and Lucy presented for the group and we got some good feedback and Ben has had some script feedback from his script tutor as well and so far it's all positive.

In terms of my progression in my role, I'm testing lenses and filters this week so I have something to reference when making decisions later on. I might also do another shutter angle test...

Project 2 - TBC

We're having a little trouble with this one. I approached two people to ask about being their sound designer - both of them informed me that I was not, in fact, Rowen Henderson and therefore, not worth the time. It's fine, even if it takes me all year, I will vanquish that boy through the violent art of sound design. Despite a few of the projects that initially caught my eye already having sound-designers attached, the roster is stacked with great ideas this year. Right now, I'm juggling a couple options: Bethany and Sam's surfer romance, Jack's rat-inspired mother-munching psychological thriller and Samuel Duner's magical journey through grief. While I've worked with Sam before and really like the quiet, confident style he brings to his films, he does have an external sound designer attached currently. There's a chance I could get onto this project as sound designer, but we'll need to see. I think Bethany's romance sounds lovely with lots of opportunity for some subtle sub textual sound design and the crew is also one I can see myself working well with BUT Jack's story sounds like it would be lots of fun to sound design, going back to my sound roots in horror (Subject #36). I hope I don't miss my chance by hanging around for too long without committing, but either way, I think I'll have a lot of fun sound designing this year.

In the mean time, I'm studying for my ProTools exam next week, which I think is going well. But yeah, it's all going well so far.

I'm going to uplaod my research agenda and rational here as well, but aside from that, my next post will be after my first tests.

most prized possession(s): ok so i have this one limited edition set it off bucket hat (number 83 of 100) i also have the hourglass mascot pin, those are pretty neat. but i think id have to say my *most* prized possession is my skateboard. (technically a longboard) but man shes a beauty. nice thick wheels for a smooth ride, kick ass design, 40(ish) cm bamboo body for a flexible board. CLEAR GRIP TAPE. the trucks are real sturdy and easy to adjust for better turning or more stability. its also lower to the ground than most longboards for better control and a smoother ride. (its a sector 9 btw, love their boards, i have 2 n so does my brother)

desert island item: really thick rope; its so versatile like, use it to climb up thick trees, lasso wild animals, depending on the material you could use some for fire. so yeah that or a bic lighter bc its a lighter man, even if it runs out of fuel it can still produce sparks. (is it evident ive lived near the woods my entire life lol)

I had a good day today!

My work had a barbacue because we met our quota 3 days early this month! I had some nice chicken and potato salad. Not really much of a party person, so I just took my food and hid.

I also went to a indoor skate park to buy some wheels, bearings, and trucks for my new skateboard, since my longboard isn't exactly useful anymore. Too many cars on the road, and the backroads are largely unpaved. Also wanted to learn how to skate properly (like kickflips and stuff).

College classes will start in late August, so I'm excited about that, finallly having the energy to get certified and educated for my life-long passion.

all day I've been thinking of you. How I'd just text to see if it was ok to stop by, and then just talk about all the new stuff going on, and maybe I can show you my skateboard, and ramble about that while I assemble it, and if you want I could give you the stickers that come with the parts, but after all that hard work I may need to turn my brain off for a while~

started drafting this last week but now im gonna talk about everyone's preferred manner of transportation in GX College AU. because i can.

Ive brought it up before but Syrus drives his brother's hand-me-down silver Prius, lovingly called the Cyber Dragon or just The Cydra. Sy put an Autobots sticker on it. He takes meticulous care of it half because He Wants To and half because "oh god if i fuck up zane's old car hes going to want to eject me into the sun" <- *anxiety spiralling*

Jaden bikes everywhere. Or walks everywhere because his bike got stolen. Or syrus drives him around ("i'll pay ya back soon I prommy!!")

Jesse drives a beat up truck older than he is and it only has a cassette player and he is driving around town getting so lost and just blasting old country tapes and you KNOW Crystal Beast Topaz Tiger is chilling out in the truck bed.

Do yall have those rentable Bird scooters??? These things?

I decided Alexis has a jailbroken one that shes uses to get to work. Zane hacked it himself for her for her birthday :^)

As mentioned above Zane used to have the silver Prius, but post-graduation drives a used hulking mass of a black 2017 Hummer because C’mon, Hell Kaiser Car Ever. He Looks Like One. mostly he just avoids social obligations by sitting in it for extended stretches of time eating grocery store baguettes.

Atticus has a red PT Cruiser with the stupid wood stripe. It's absolutely covered in bumper stickers, shit like Jimmy Buffett's head and a rainbow pot leaf and a pan flag "surf's up!" and "why not hugs AND drugs" and "i brake for all that is beautiful in this world." he has a custom license plate that says LUVMSTR, also.

He also longboards this is important. Has longboarded into traffic more than once.

ive never seen anyone give aster a motorcycle before but i think he should have one. Little white yamaha-type bike, zips around and goes to biker meetups with sartorius (they really straight up gave him a motorcycle in s4 and honestly?? it fucking rules.) Aster i think also has some ludicrously expensive sports car gathering dust in his apartment complex parking garage. Little rich boy BASTARD.

Skateboard wheels and straps: Electric skateboard and longboard wheels aren’t any different than the usual kind. Most wheels and straps are made of polyurethane material.

Bearings: Bearings generally have two types of metal bearings and ceramic bearings. At present, most electric skateboards use metal bearings.
