Hi everyone! Welcome to my blog!

I decided to make a new pinned post with all the information that is available on my desktop site but that will be more accessible for mobile users. Plus a few extras 😉

So an introduction.

I'm Ace. I started this blog back in February 2018 after seeing a post that referenced the whump community. I had no idea there was such a large community here on tumblr! As soon as I saw that making a whump blog was an option I immediately made one. And I haven't regretted it since. I love this blog, I love this community, and I'm thrilled to be here three years later! 

Here on this blog you'll see lots of gifsets both reblogged from wonderful creators and gifs made by yours truly. I also write fanfics on occasion. You can check out my work on AO3 under the name "aceofwhump" or you can look under my tag "ace writes stuff". That tag will have some stuff not on AO3 too. I also do whump lists for certain characters, trope lists, video clips of good whump, and fanfic recs.

My favorite tropes are:

Emotional: panic attacks, nightmares, insecurities, feeling inadequate, fear, grief, flashbacks, flinching, emotional breakdowns full of sobbing, emotional outbursts, scar reveals, anxiety, self hatred

Environmental: accidents, natural disasters like earthquakes or storms, hit by a car, collapsed building, falling through ice, heat exhaustion, hypothermia, falls, burns, infected wounds from lack of medical equipment, sickness, being unable to breathe, drowning

Small moments: limping, feeling weak and seeking support, breathing through the pain, moving wrong in a way that aggravates the pain, and the sudden seizing of his body, shaking hands, pressing the heel of his hand against his temple because of a headache, taking a moment to close his eyes because he’s light headed/exhausted/has such a bad headache

Sci-fi: space illness, oxygen deprivation, isolation, being locked in the brig, hull of the ship getting damaged, alien attacks

Injuries: broken bones, gunshot wounds, hidden injuries, bruises, beaten, concussions, collapsed lung, slings, casts, crutches, knocked unconscious, blood loss

Torture/Captivity: Being strung up by their wrists from the ceiling, drugged, chained up, caged, tied to a chair, handcuffed to a pole, interrogated

Comfort/Caretaking: hugging, “Are you okay?”, “You’re safe now”, “I’ve got you”, hand holding, helping to walk, ice packs, covering someone with a blanket, a cool cloth on their forehead to help with a fever, a fever check, touching their face to offer comfort

Magic: magical healing that causes pain, draining of powers, powers that are painful to use, curses

Introducing…

ACEOFWHUMP’S FANFIC MASTERLIST!!

This has been a massive, ongoing project of mine for a while now in which I am endeavoring to catalog and categorize every fanfiction I’ve ever bookmarked. I fear this project will never be complete as I'm always reading and bookmarking new fics but I’m going to share it anyway.

Inside, you will find links and summaries to the fanfictions I’ve read over the years on both AO3 and FF.net. Each fic is sorted by the specific whumpee that they center on. So there’s a page for Danny Williams, for Mike Warren, for Lucifer Morningstar, and many many more. The fics are 90% whump with a touch of fluffy ones thrown in too. This list is based on the fics I’ve read and bookmarked so it leans heavily on my favorite whumpees and my favorite tropes. 

I’ve been working on categorizing every fic by its tropes (so theoretically you could search for say seizure fics or sick fics) but that’s taking me a loooong time because I have to reread every fic in order to determine what kind of categories to make and to look for the specific tropes. So for now you’ll have to make do with the fic summaries and using the search function. When it’s done, each whumpee will have their specific trope categories so you won’t necessarily find the same tropes in each category but it should help narrow down the fics better once I’m done. This is an ongoing project for me.

The list gets updated all the time so check back in every now and then. There might be something new.

I do take suggestions of fics to add to this masterlist but please keep in mind that it may not end up on the list. It's nothing personal I promise. I just can't add every single fic in the world.

14: cheer girl loml <33 not my best art technically by far but i went way out of my comfort zone for the background and the art style (for no good reason really) (i just wanted to do a comic book thing bc superhero vibes or whatever) (it did not come out the way i was hoping it would bc i think i got too frustrated) and we simply must acknowledge that. atog did things to me that i cannot explain

13: barbie meme brittana! not my best britt but truly sooo fun to work on. there's nothing quite like finding a fun rendering process and then never using it again (i don't even remember how i coloured this but i like it)

12: cowboy barbie brittana <3 they look good, they're about to kiss, cute outfits, pretty sunset, probably went overboard with the rim lighting, what's not to love? a banger, i think

11: i say a little prayer! i think the background is. questionable at best. but this is still really fun! i think i got possessed when i got to the uniforms bc goddamn they look good

10: klaine?? on this blog???? almost unheard of lmao i truly did not think i would like this one as much as i did. i'd consider ranking it higher if i wasn't constantly Unwell over brittana but again, i'm biased, and no one here should be surprised about that

9: pre-wedding kiss my beloved! with how insane i've been over this kiss it could perhaps be higher. i am gnawing on my desk as we speak i'm not even sitting at a desk rn

8: rutherchang x black swan!! ohhh u guys i don't talk about this one enough i think it's so pretty i don't even remember how i did the colours for it but rhgfdkngd?? love her, love pushing the glee x bts agenda, if any of u gifmakers are interested in making a mike chang x black swan lyric gifset i will love u forever

7: colour wheel challenge! busted my whole tiddies and ass for this one fellas. labour of love etc etc i think staring at the bright colours for so long made my eyesight worse and i'm ok with that

6: mistletoe brittana <33 easily the best instalment of this series by a long shot! recency bias (and also just. regular bias) made me rank her much higher originally but technically she is not the most intricate piece so she must sit down here

5: prom queen kurt! dare i say a girlslay on my behalf? i think i dare. every time i see it i think i should do more glosters (glee posters) and then i don't. i could tho they would be really cool (source: dude trust me)

4: churro kiss redraw!!! genuinely Not Sane over this! never have been, never will be! redraws are like crack to me and so is this kiss

3: furtana!! i neglected them for far too long this year but if neglecting them results in art like this i may have to do it again

2: heart kiss <3 if we're being really honest and vulnerable in the chat tonight i think this is technically my best of the brittana kiss screencap redraw things i've done this year? which i did not see coming but i guess practice means refining the process etc etc so. it makes sense ig. mwah to them <3

1: black or white gcv animation <3 it's not what i would call my best drawing (bc it's, yknow, not just one drawing) but it is what i would call the product of a very obsessive thought and some frantic art sessions. objectively it's the coolest thing i've done this year so it deserves the top spot. i'm proud of it i hope to glanimate more next year. also this isn't art but it's a relevant post that i still stand by months later

I want to talk about tumblr's demise as a gifmaker, because it is truly depressing. Nowhere else on the internet supports gifs like this site.

Tumblr's gif/photo size limit is 10mb. If other sites allow gifs at all, their file sizes are extremely limited. No more nice, crisp, big HQ gifs. That'll just be gone.

We all make jokes about how a good gifset can do a lot for encouraging people to watch shows. For me as a gifmaker, gifsets are a way to express my absolute love for media, showcasing it in a creative way and basically saying to everyone, "look at this!". That...doesn't feel possible for me on any other site.

Because tumblr has such an amazing gifmaking community. There is years of talent here, of passion and people honing their skills. Photoshop isn't easy! Gifmaking isn't easy! I am always in awe of the gifsets I see on here, and watching how the styles and trends change over the years is always so fun.

It really does feel like if tumblr continues to explode itself as it is currently doing, we're going to lose so much. There is nowhere for us to go right now. We will lose so much talent and passion. Twitter is notorious for stolen gifs and doesn't allow long formatted gifsets, bluesky doesn't even have gifs (for now?) and I have no hopes for it being much better than twitter when/if it does, and I am not sure about cohost; it does allow gifs but again, none of the community is there and you can only get a 10mb upload size with a subscription from what I can tell.

#cohost does look better than I thought but again my gifs are all *barely* under 10mb I'd have to change my style completely

I'm a gifmaker as well, and lately I've been dedicated myself to making stimboards with proper crediting. The link leads to a dead blog titled "charmyspad", reverse image search leads to nowhere, and looking for any other instance of that blog has proven unsuccessful! If you could at all help me out sourcing the gif, or even the source video itself, I would be immensely grateful.

I could not find the source gif, nor the gif maker, it seems it may have been made in 2017 as far as I can see, and gifs made that far back in time tend to get lost incredibly easily. However, I did find the original video source. Here it is.

i have been trying to come up with something to say other than thank you <3 because while the show may have ended there is something nice that we get to do and that's created. i hope you keep writing for soc (and im biased, so for kanej). i know right now is hard but your fics are so amazing.

At a family-adjacent event, someone from the other side of the family (who I know fairly well at this point) asked me "Have you ever read Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall?" She knows that I love reading and like talking about books, so it wasn't completely out of left field, but given how much I adore Wolf Hall, it caught me off guard for a moment. Yes, I replied, it's actually genuinely one of my favorite books.

She then started talking about the reasons she mostly hated it. And it wasn't from a perspective of dismissing my love or tearing it down. She talked about how much she admired the writing and about how much she disliked the characters. "He's such a difficult main character," she mused. Yes! I cried, he is!

The whole time, we had this conversation while explicitly coming from different places in terms of engaging with this piece of art, coming from different generations (classic Boomer versus Millennial), and seeking different satisfaction from the art itself. She had just finished the book and I read it years ago, when it came out. But even though we had fundamentally different experiences reading the book, we forged a fascinating conversation. We argued over the literary merits of having such a flawed, difficult protagonist, about what it means to like that (as I do), and more.

And it's these sorts of conversations that I think are sorely missing from fandom. This debate wasn't an argument and it wasn't passive acceptance of someone else's other opinion with no pushback. There were aspects that were obviously just down to taste, but other things were interpretative or contextual. When I compared Wolf Hall as a contrast to the film "A Man For All Seasons", she brought up "Anne of the Thousand Days". Our interpretations were different. Our experiences were different. But that didn't prevent us from finding the contact points.

I love being able to engage with art (as should be pretty obvious by this entire blog). I love watching or reading something and going "ah yes, here is something I liked" and then discussing it. I also often like saying "ah yes, here is something I deeply disliked". My dislike usually doesn't negate my like (if I have it) or even someone else's like (if I don't). Today, gifmakers will often bristle at the idea of tags that don't fully embrace the characters or scenes depicted in the gifs. But for me, part of sharing something is having that discussion. If I'm sharing a gifset, it's because I like it and I want to be able to address something particular in that gifset. Sometimes, I find a relationship compelling without necessarily shipping them; does that mean I can't/shouldn't share something that comes from a place of viewing them romantically, while elaborating on that thought? Maybe, maybe not.

"Make your own post" is the common refrain, but that's exactly what I find missing. Smaller fandoms sometimes manage to have these conversations, but there's a sense that it's always the exception. Fandom revolves around the love of a thing, often leaving little room for truly nuanced discussions of what does or doesn't work for others. Ultimately, I'm surprised and gratified to have found exactly what I was looking for at a child's birthday party, discussing a book I really loved between the salad and the cake. I just wish I could have it within my other fandom communities as well.

this is not directed at gifmakers in any way bc you are the lifeblood of this website and you are so talented and i Love You but the fact that tumblr has now completely gotten rid of the old post editor so that all gifsets on desktop themes look like pictures/gifs posted in a textpost rather than a photoset Truly may be the thing that breaks me when it comes to this website askjdfh and you might be like hey! ciara what do you care! you don’t make gifs! but what u need to understand is i am one of the 2% of people on this website that exclusively blogs on desktop and as such, i permanently have my blog open in a separate tab and have done every single day for the last 10 years and now whenever i go to that tab the gifsets that i know these creators have spent hours making look all messed up and don’t sit the way they should and when i tell you it literally makes me want to itch my brain every time i see it because it looks wRONG and i get this is a niche thing and it doesn’t affect these posts on the dashboard or the app or whatever but like i genuinely, genuinely cannot convey to you how much it bothers me out of every single change tumblr has made that people complain about this IS the hill i’m going to die on xo

Truly it all comes down to the quality of the footage you’re working with. Try to find the best quality footage available. The better the quality, the better the gif will look

Looking for footage can be challenging. There’s some places you can try, but sometimes you have to t/orrent. If you do, get yourself a good vpn and antivirus. I use W/indscibe

Not all 1080p look the same. It depends on the size of the footage

YouTube 1080p is not true 1080p. The quality will still look sort of weird. One thing I like to do when working with YouTube videos is add noise, as that will make the gif look better and get rid of some of the blur and weird looking lines. Here’s how I add it. But be careful, noise makes the gif size bigger (tumblr gif size can’t be bigger than 10mb)

Sharpening settings are super important! I add two layers of smart sharpening with these settings:

Familiarize yourself with photoshop. Look through all the adjustment layers, settings, etc. I’ve found new things the more I look through

Curves are your best friend. Always start with it. It will set precedence for how your gif will turn out. I like bringing out the darkest points of the gif so I do a normal curves layer with the black point and white point, and a second one with only a black point

Channel mixer is your second best friend. It can help get rid of any weird coloring and tint that the footage comes with (especially helpful when you’re working with yellow tints). Here’s a tutorial on how it works. It may look complicated but once you get a hang of it it’s pretty easy

To color I use selective coloring. Sometimes I add as many selective coloring layers until I get the result I want

Not every single idea will turn out exactly how you picture it. That’s just something that happens. Maybe the coloring isn’t perfect. Maybe the blending is hard. That’s okay. Try your best, or you can find other ways to do it. For example, I originally wanted to blend these gifs together, but some of them looked weird imo, so I went with the ripped paper effect instead

Don’t be afraid to ask people for help, or search for tutorials

If you can, join creator servers. Those are very helpful. You can find footage, get ideas for gifsets, ask for help and collaborate with others

Experiment!!! Sometimes the best ideas come out of experimenting for hours, but also don’t get stuck on something. If it’s not working and you’ve tried, move on

Are you a graphic designer for a career?

Like do you use all of these skills in real life or did you just randomly learn one day.

Oh no, I'm no graphic designer. I've recently begun working with more designers though and not only do they tend to be lovely people but it's a very cool profession. I think I'd never stop feeling like an impostor if I were to switch careers but it's not tooooo far from what I'm doing anyway so hey, you never know.

To answer the second half, any general graphic design skills I have I mostly use for giffing and very rarely - though not never! - do I make use of them in real life. I've always looked at this kind of stuff as something I play around with in fandom but I can't exactly add gifsets to a professional portfolio haha. I mean, I could, I'm just too cowardly to. And like I said it's not my profession so these, well we'll generously call them "skills" begin and end with fandom for me.

I wouldn't say I randomly learned "one" day haha it's been ~14 years but essentially it did just randomly start out as what it still is today. Fan sites were big back in the day in lieu of social media and when I started in earnest as a fan of something (ATLA) I used to run one and ~design~ headers and icons and stuff for it. "Design" in the very loosest sense of the word, as an 11-year-old who's seeing Photoshop for the first time. I mostly learned from my sister who learned from online tutorials. Everything I did in Photoshop had the end goal of being on that website. And then on Tumblr I didn't do any sort of editing for the longest time, then dabbled in gifmaking a bit around 2015, my Carmilla era and post-LoK. I only truly picked up giffing about a year ago though as I started engaging with the Glee fandom here on Tumblr.

So that's the long story of it, started with ATLA headers and now making Glee gifs. I've used my Photoshop skills once or twice while at university and interning and very rarely I will make use of it at work. But it's kinda nice to have something as just a hobby I enjoy doing and sharing with people instead of this marketable skill, you know.

hmmm there's actually not a particular trend that i absolutely cant stand floating around at the moment!

i will truly never be able to pick between curves & selective colors, they both do 99% of the heavy lifting for me!

find a tutorial that works for you (my personal fave) and then experiment with coloring! look at other creators PSD's to get some ideas about how different adjustments work together and really truly just mess around with it 💜

6. this aragorn set first of all YES you get it aragorn is the best character. and this is such a cool set i absolutely love it!! the colors are all so gorgeous and go together very nicely. the small quotes are such a nice touch too! just an amazing set <3

5. this return of the jedi set HOOOW? how do you do it. i know the original trilogy isn’t exactly easy to color so wow this is so impressive!! i really like all the shots you chose, especially the vader one. i just love the contrast the black brings to the set, SO gorgeous!!

3. this nina zenik set ahh it’s so soft and pretty, i’m in love!! i just love pink and yellow together but this set is truly on another level with the pastels. the blending and typography are super lovely as well, love love love!!

2. this din & grogu set the way my jaw dropped when i saw this!! this has to be one of my favorite color combos ever and you do it SO. DAMN. WELL. and the blending?? SO SEAMLESS AND PERFECT. the quote is so good too like ooff!!  talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular.

changes*tumblr*com/post/692141171135447040/ -- so apparently, even after all of the negative feedback, tumblr will still be going through with the mp4 change. they really don't care about gifmakers or our feedback, i'm pretty sure they've never even bothered to acknowledge our complaints in the first place.

yup i'm honestly not surprised, just pissed off. it's very typical of st*ff to ignore any valid concerns that its userbase has and go forward with implementing changes that are unnecessary and wildly harmful to a large percentage of said userbase. like... the quality of the conversions don't matter to us - the fact that our gifs are being converted at all is what we're upset about. the decision on st*ff's part to be so obtuse about that is just frustrating. we've repeatedly outlined the specifics of why this whole idea is bullshit and they still don't seem to be willing to listen.

st*ff basically saying "look see the mp4 quality is minimally better now so stfu" is so condescending and emphasizes to me that they truly don't give a shit about their users, and that they are deliberately ignoring the fact that this change will fundamentally alter the gifmaking process.

the fucking quality doesn't matter if the gifs aren't gifs anymore. there's no point in using ps to make a gif and export it as such when the entire gif is rendered into a 2 second video that alters the medium of the image, and i'm sure that there will be plenty of bugs and glitches and other additional issues that content creators will have to deal with once the change is fully implemented, because it's tumblr dot com. we can barely put up with the various issues we have to deal with as is - no one is going to stay on this site if we have to navigate this on top of everything else. and i'm sure that any workarounds that exist to avoid the mp4 conversion will have their own glitches, or tumblr will crack down on them over time until it can't be avoided. it's truly so fucking dumb and quite honestly i don't have the capacity to deal with it.

i love gifmaking and creating but i've never felt as discouraged and honestly disinterested in gifmaking as i do right now. i've been giffing on here for about 4-5 years and i've put up with a lot of bullshit, but this may be enough to make me quit, if not for a little bit than possibly for good. and i hate that, but i have enough going on in my personal life as is and i don't think i have the energy or mental capacity to create with so many obstacles. gifmaking should be fun and a way to communicate with others, but when all i see is a lack of interaction, people stealing/reposting my content, persistent negativity, and additional problems forced on me by the website i create for, there's little to no enjoyment remaining for me.
