dazai isn’t in love with chuuya guys, just because he gave him a reason to live and he said he wanted to see what chuuya’s insides look like and he waxes poetic about him when he’s fighting and he’s constantly thinking of new ways to annoy him and they share a soul does NOT mean they’re in love. idiots.

i don’t think chuuya’s complexity as a character is spoken about enough honestly. one of the recurring themes in bsd is that good people do bad things, and bad people do good things, and morality is complicated and never perfect in any person because it is literally a concept of humanity.
to me, chuuya embodies this the most because while he has taken countless lives and doesn’t hesitate to do so, his most prominent lore centers around him protecting the people he cares about (the sheep in fifteen, his colleagues in storm bringer, the mafia in the cannibalism arc, he even shows concern for Dazai despite their complications).
there is no debate that he has killed and caused devastation with his ability, but he was also a child when he was burdened with the responsibility of protecting the entirety of the sheep, and was still a child when he was recruited into the mafia which would cause anyone’s moral compass to become questionable.
chuuya is loyal to and protective of the people he cares about, and his biggest moral complication is that he will do anything for them.

there are probably many logical theories as to why dazai is no longer covered in blood when he reveals himself to fyodor as not actually being dead but in my head chuuya patched him up and wiped away the blood i’m happy living with my delusions (:

imagine your boss is a retired assassin and your partner is an ex mafia executive and even the kids you work with have faced unfathomable adversities and meanwhile you’re just some guy who taught math

I often think about how, between Dazai and Chuuya, Chuuya initially seemed more likely to abandon the mafia to pursue a life in ‘the light’.
Right from the start, Dazai is shown to care very little for others and blatantly expresses his lack of regard for the loss of lives, showing no remorse for his fallen colleagues and even sees their deaths as a stepping stone at some point.
Interestingly, from the very beginning Chuuya is the opposite, showing extreme regard and compassion for others (of course he also has no quarrels with killing people who harm those he cares for, though I think this furthers my point)
Chuuya is described as being extremely loyal to the people he cares about, and expresses great grief when he loses any of his colleagues or friends, while Dazai was the exact opposite. Because of this, it’s interesting to me how circumstances led to Dazai leaving to pursue of a life of good and not Chuuya.

hc that chuuya’s power made him a source of comfort for many of the kids in the sheep so he inadvertently adopted a caretaker role and is used to taking care of other people and has experience with patching wounds and lulling kids to sleep after they have nightmares
hc that he couldn’t quite shake this nature of his when he joins the mafia and often ends up taking care of dazai by changing his bandages, protecting him during fights, and overall using his presence to ward off anyone who might want to do dazai harm
hc that he can’t quite shake his protective nature and dazai isn’t used to having someone care about him like that so he just short circuits every time and it’s ultimately what makes him fall twice as hard for chuuya
hc that dazai sometimes deliberately puts himself in situations just so that chuuya will have to patch him up or rescue him cough cough dead apple

the way dazai is on a constant mission to tease and harass chuuya is very reminiscent of an emotionally repressed 5-year-old tugging their crush’s pigtails on the playground

sometimes i just think about that scene in storm bringer where chuuya holds a younger version of himself in his arms while it dies graphically and horrifically because it can’t survive outside of its test tube and i just think about it but in a healthy way though i’m fine

sometimes I think about how Chuuya and Dazai's abilities are literal reflections of each other's lives because Chuuya's ability makes him "no longer human" and Dazai's life is "the tainted sorrow" and then I think about how without Dazai's ability Chuuya would literally be dead by now because Dazai's ability is the only thing that can pull Chuuya from Corruption and Dazai initially had a deal with Mori to finally end his life but that deal is conveniently forgotten about once Chuuya joined the mafia

sorry what was that im busy thinking about how chuuya nearly died under someone else’s control meaning he almost died while actively being used like a puppet which is a fate that has always been a possibility for him since his ability’s full potential is the price of his autonomy and i’m thinking about the cruel irony of that and i’m so okay about it i’m fine i’m not upset
